 She is an FDT, EDDL, and FDI expert with 9+ years of experience in managing

WHY IS FDT NEEDED?
 As the number of intelligent devices increase, the more
complicated settings and adjustments needed.
 All the devices have to be configured and operated with
specific software tools.
 All the devices have to be integrated into many different
systems.
 The automation system devices are installed from different
vendors with different functions.
 Though this Asset Management host system uses the EDDL
technology, the vendor-supplied plug-in software must be
used to make complicated settings or adjustments in the
plant.

FDT – OPENNESS
 FDT supports 16+ industrial standard communication protocols such as
HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, ISA100, Ethernet
IP, CAN Open, OPC, IO Link, etc.
 FDT Technology is an IEC international standard (IEC 62453), ISA Standard
(ISA 103) and China (GB/T 29618) standard, which enables a standard
means to access the smart device information independent of the field
communication protocol.

WHAT IS FDT?
 FDT (Field Device Type) is the enabling technology that
standardizes the communication and configuration interface
between all field devices and host systems.
 Any device can be configured, operated, and maintained through
the standardized user interface – regardless of supplier, type or
communication protocol.
 FDT was built to support a comprehensive, open architecture for
the connected world of industrial automation.

FDT FRAME APPLICATION
 The Frame Application offers the common runtime environment for DTMs.
 The Frame Application is a software application that initializes the DTM
instance and provide option to configure, maintain, and communicate the
devices with appropriate communication interface.
 FDT frame application is characterized by a common, unified environment
for heterogeneous systems in automation.
 A single FDT Frame Application supports more than 15 of the world’s most
popular field communication protocols.

FDT/DTM (FIELD DEVICE TOOL/DEVICE TYPE MANAGER)
 The FDT DTM is a device specific software component specific to a device,
which contains the application software that defines all of the parameters and
logical capabilities in the device (similar like a device driver for a printer).
 The DTM provides a rich graphical user interface which is used to configure
any simple or even complex devices.
 The DTM can be hosted in any FDT standard Frame Applications.
 The DTM’s business logic is developed using the FDT standard interface that
are defined by FDT Group.
 The DTM includes the interactive user interface to make the device
configuration, maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting easy and fast.
 The DTM is supplied along with the device by device manufacturers.
 The DTM can support more than one device types.

DTM (DEVICE TYPE MANAGER) TYPES
Device DTM
A Device DTM contains the application software for a standard field device, e.g. a pressure
transmitter, a valve, or a drive.
Communication DTM
A Communication DTM is a special category of the DTM, containing the application
software for the specific communication hardware.
Gateway DTM
A Gateway DTM is a special category of DTM representing a device that connects different
fieldbus segments, for example PROFIBUS DP with HART.

FDT 1.2X ARCHITECTURE
 FDT 1.2.x is a client/server architecture based on Microsoft Windows® COM.
 FDT 1.2.x is using standard COM interfaces for persistenace.
 XML is used to exchange Data between different Components.
 In FDT 1.2x DTM User Interface (ActiveX control) gets pointer to DTM Business
Logic and interacts with it over private interfaces.
 In FDT 1.2x DTM Business Logic gets pointer to Communication Channel and
interacts with it over the Fdt Communication interface.
 FDT 1.2x thread synchronization relies on COM Apartment state.

FDT 2 SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE
 Uses .NET framework, which is latest technology supports for lifetime.
 No direct access between DTM BL and DTM UI & DTM and
Communication Channel.
 Frame Application manages interaction between DTM UI, DTM BL, & DTM
and Communication Channel.
 UI shall be implemented using WPF or Winform controls.
 Standard threading rules for Frame Applications and DTMs
 Simplified architecture which is easy for interoperability.
 More Security, as the DTM binaries shall be signed using code-signing
certificate.

FDT 2 – CLIENT/SERVER
 New FDT 2 designed as a Client/Server architecture, i.e., Frame
Application can execute the DTM Business Logic and DTM User
Interface in different PCs.
 FDT 2 provides such features to support distributed scenarios like
multi-user locking access and server based DTM repositories.
 The flexible architecture allows end users to deploy DTM in Mobile
solutions.

FDT 2 – OPC UA SERVER
 The OPC UA Server has a double role: the server act as Frame
Application according to FDT 2.0 and it act as OPC UA Server.
 OPC UA Server contains the Frame Application, which execute the DTM
representing the physical device.
 The information provided by DTMs is used to create an OPC UA
Information Model.
 FDT Group and OPC Foundation work jointly on a specification defining
an information model for mapping DTM information.

FDT 3.0 - FDT IIoT SERVER (FITS™)
 To advance the support of IIoT and industrie 4.0 in FDT, the FDT group has
developed a solution known as FITS™.
 It enables mobility, cloud, and fog enterprise applications, as well as sensor-to-
cloud and enterprise-wide connectivity employing FRAME™ and DTM™ business
logic at the heart of its client-server architecture.

FDT/DTM CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE
 Applicant to supply the DTM, the device and other accessories to
the test site
 Applicant to share the declaration form having the details of the
DTM to under certification
 Test site to follow the procedure prescribed by FDT group to
conduct conformity testing
 Test site to share the conformity test report to the FDT group
 FDT Group to issue the DTM certification

WHAT IF THE CONFORMITY TEST FAILS?
WHAT IF THERE IS A GENUINE ISSUE ?
 At times conformity test fails and the issue is genuine for example
 There is no issue with the DTM and it behaves as expected
 The issue is with the testing tool.
 In such cases the applicant with the help of test site can raise the Test Exception Request (TER)
 The FDT Test and Certification Work Group members review the TER and jointly decide
whether to accept or reject the TER
 If the TER is accepted, the FDT group issues the certificate to the applicant

FDT DTM CERTIFICATION CRITERIA
 Conformity testing is performed by an independent test sites accredited by the FDT group
 Conformity testing is performed by using the official testing tool, dtmINSPECTOR only
 Conformity tests are run against specification FDT 1.2.x or FDT 2.0
 For FDT 1.2.x certification
 dtmINSPECTOR 3.1 is used for performing conformity testing
 The style guide test is optional
 For FDT 2.0 certification
 dtmINSPECTOR 4.0 is used for performing conformity testing
 The style guide test is mandatory
 When performing conformity test for a device DTM, certified COMM DTM need to be used and vice versa
 The test procedure is same for all types of certifications such as certification of device DTM, COMM DTM, Gateway DTM

FDT/DTM CERTIFICATION PROGRAM – TIMELINE AND COST
 The DTM certification requires collaboration between, the applicant, the test site and the FDT group. The major activities which are dependent on each
other are
 The shipment of device, hardware accessories and the DTM to the test site
 The conformity testing by the test site
 Certificate generation by the FDT group
 All together it takes about 4 weeks to 6 weeks to complete the certification process
 The cost of the certification testing depends on various criteria.

Ltd. 2020 WHY IS FDT NEEDED?  As the number of intelligent devices increase, the more complicated settings and adjustments needed.  All the devices have to be configured and operated with specific software tools.  All the devices have to be integrated into many different systems.  The automation system devices are installed from different vendors with different functions.  Though this Asset Management host system uses the EDDL technology, the vendor-supplied plug-in software must be used to make complicated settings or adjustments in the plant. Ltd. 2020 FDT – OPENNESS  FDT supports 16+ industrial standard communication protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, ISA100, Ethernet IP, CAN Open, OPC, IO Link, etc.  FDT Technology is an IEC international standard (IEC 62453), ISA Standard (ISA 103) and China (GB/T 29618) standard, which enables a standard means to access the smart device information independent of the field communication protocol.

Ltd. 2020 FDT FRAME APPLICATION  The Frame Application offers the common runtime environment for DTMs.  The Frame Application is a software application that initializes the DTM instance and provide option to configure, maintain, and communicate the devices with appropriate communication interface.  FDT frame application is characterized by a common, unified environment for heterogeneous systems in automation.  A single FDT Frame Application supports more than 15 of the world’s most popular field communication protocols.

Ltd. 2020 FDT/DTM (FIELD DEVICE TOOL/DEVICE TYPE MANAGER)  The FDT DTM is a device specific software component specific to a device, which contains the application software that defines all of the parameters and logical capabilities in the device (similar like a device driver for a printer).  The DTM provides a rich graphical user interface which is used to configure any simple or even complex devices.  The DTM can be hosted in any FDT standard Frame Applications.  The DTM’s business logic is developed using the FDT standard interface that are defined by FDT Group.  The DTM includes the interactive user interface to make the device configuration, maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting easy and fast.  The DTM is supplied along with the device by device manufacturers.  The DTM can support more than one device types.

Ltd. 2020 DTM (DEVICE TYPE MANAGER) TYPES Device DTM A Device DTM contains the application software for a standard field device, e.g. a pressure transmitter, a valve, or a drive. Communication DTM A Communication DTM is a special category of the DTM, containing the application software for the specific communication hardware. Gateway DTM A Gateway DTM is a special category of DTM representing a device that connects different fieldbus segments, for example PROFIBUS DP with HART.

Ltd. 2020 FDT 1.2X ARCHITECTURE  FDT 1.2.x is a client/server architecture based on Microsoft Windows® COM.  FDT 1.2.x is using standard COM interfaces for persistenace.  XML is used to exchange Data between different Components.  In FDT 1.2x DTM User Interface (ActiveX control) gets pointer to DTM Business Logic and interacts with it over private interfaces.  In FDT 1.2x DTM Business Logic gets pointer to Communication Channel and interacts with it over the Fdt Communication interface.  FDT 1.2x thread synchronization relies on COM Apartment state. Ltd. 2020 FDT 2 SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE  Uses .NET framework, which is latest technology supports for lifetime.  No direct access between DTM BL and DTM UI & DTM and Communication Channel.  Frame Application manages interaction between DTM UI, DTM BL, & DTM and Communication Channel.  UI shall be implemented using WPF or Winform controls.  Standard threading rules for Frame Applications and DTMs  Simplified architecture which is easy for interoperability.  More Security, as the DTM binaries shall be signed using code-signing certificate. Ltd. 2020 FDT 2 – CLIENT/SERVER  New FDT 2 designed as a Client/Server architecture, i.e., Frame Application can execute the DTM Business Logic and DTM User Interface in different PCs.  FDT 2 provides such features to support distributed scenarios like multi-user locking access and server based DTM repositories.  The flexible architecture allows end users to deploy DTM in Mobile solutions. Ltd. 2020 FDT 2 – OPC UA SERVER  The OPC UA Server has a double role: the server act as Frame Application according to FDT 2.0 and it act as OPC UA Server.  OPC UA Server contains the Frame Application, which execute the DTM representing the physical device.  The information provided by DTMs is used to create an OPC UA Information Model.  FDT Group and OPC Foundation work jointly on a specification defining an information model for mapping DTM information. Ltd. 2020 FDT 1.2 Vs FDT 2.0 COMPARISON CONCEPTS FDT 1.2x FDT 2.0 Interface Definitions FDT 1.2x interfaces are defined as COM interfaces and distributed as COM DLL FDT2.0 interfaces are defined as .NET interfaces distributed in a primary assembly DTM Business Logic implementation DTM Business Logic is implemented as COM Object, which is distributed as a COM Server DLL or EXE. DTM Business Logic is implemented as simple .NET class, which is distributed in a .NET Assembly. DTM User Interface implementation DTM User Interface is implemented as ActiveX control DTM User Interface is implemented as WPF control. Data Exchange FDT1.2.x uses XML for data exchange over the interfaces. FDT2.0 uses data types which are passed by value over the interfaces. OPC UA support has been done for FDT 2.0.

Ltd. 2020 FDT DTM CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE  Test site to share the conformity test report to the applicant for further investigation.  The applicant to fix the issue and share the updated DTM to the test site.  The test center to repeat the test procedure and complete the documentation formalities WHAT IF THE CONFORMITY TEST FAILS? WHAT IF THERE IS A GENUINE ISSUE ?  At times conformity test fails and the issue is genuine for example  There is no issue with the DTM and it behaves as expected  The issue is with the testing tool.  In such cases the applicant with the help of test site can raise the Test Exception Request (TER)  The FDT Test and Certification Work Group members review the TER and jointly decide whether to accept or reject the TER  If the TER is accepted, the FDT group issues the certificate to the applicant Exception is genuine and can’t be fixed Applicant to raise TER with the support from the test site FDT WG T&C Group to review the TER WG T&C group accept TER FDT group to issue the certificate A Yes Yes No FDT Group to Reject certification FDT Group to Reject certification No

Ltd. 2020 FDT DTM CERTIFICATION CRITERIA  Conformity testing is performed by an independent test sites accredited by the FDT group  Conformity testing is performed by using the official testing tool, dtmINSPECTOR only  Conformity tests are run against specification FDT 1.2.x or FDT 2.0  For FDT 1.2.x certification  dtmINSPECTOR 3.1 is used for performing conformity testing  The style guide test is optional  For FDT 2.0 certification  dtmINSPECTOR 4.0 is used for performing conformity testing  The style guide test is mandatory  When performing conformity test for a device DTM, certified COMM DTM need to be used and vice versa  The test procedure is same for all types of certifications such as certification of device DTM, COMM DTM, Gateway DTM

Ltd. 2020 FDT/DTM CERTIFICATION PROGRAM – TIMELINE AND COST  The DTM certification requires collaboration between, the applicant, the test site and the FDT group. The major activities which are dependent on each other are  The shipment of device, hardware accessories and the DTM to the test site  The conformity testing by the test site  Certificate generation by the FDT group  All together it takes about 4 weeks to 6 weeks to complete the certification process  The cost of the certification testing depends on various criteria.
