Hepatitis E virus is a 27nm, non-enveloped, icosahedral virus with positive-sense single-stranded RNA that can be transmitted between animals and humans through zoonotic, blood-borne, or food-borne routes. It causes jaundice with symptoms like enlarged liver, nausea, vomiting and fever. Prevention efforts include screening blood and organ donors, proper sanitation practices, and a vaccine. While there is no treatment, Hepatitis E is usually self-limiting and does not require hospitalization.
