This document provides an overview of scientific databases and resources for research. It begins by defining various publication and document types. It then discusses the current journal publishing business models of subscription-based versus open access. Several recommended e-databases are introduced, including Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, SciFinder, EBSCO Host, PubMed, Springer, and Wiley. Online tutorials and the library website are provided as resources for accessing and searching these databases.

Scholarly video journals to increase productivity in research and educationNASIG
The biological and medical research chronically suffers from the low reproducibility of experimental studies since the traditional text format of science journals cannot provide an adequate description of details and nuances of complex experimental procedures. This creates a critical “bottleneck” problem of knowledge transfer for research and education. Addressing this challenge, a new generation of science journals employs video online to provide a systematic visualized publication of experimental studies. Visualization through video greatly facilitates the understanding and learning of experimental procedures enhancing knowledge transfer and productivity in research and education. The video-based publication in the rigorous academic format requires a new set of concepts and technical approaches to production, publication and dissemination processes. As the publisher of Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), the first video journal for biological sciences indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed, I would like to provide an overview of the growing field of video publication and discuss its technical challenges, implications for scholarly communication and acceptance in the academic and library community.
Presenters: Moshe Pritsker, JoVE
There are currently approximately 28,000 journals publishing 1.5 million papers annually. Although the majority of new journals are legitimate, the credentials of some are questionable. Such journals and publishers are referred to as 'predatory'. They commonly send spam emails to potential authors, solicit submissions and request payment of article processing charges, but lack academic rigour or credibility. This presentation will look at examples of publishers, publications and provide practical tips to identify and avoid predatory publishers.
This presentation gives a quick insight into how Scopus can benefit the scientific community and which value it adds to research institutions.
Increasing the speed to discovery and making resources more visible are just a few key drivers for the world wide success of www.scopus.com.

Journal editors and peer reviewers represent the ultimate gatekeepers in the publication of high-quality scholarly works. Yet, for authors with English as a second language who are trying to get their research published in SCI-indexed, high-impact, English-language journals, there are many hurdles related to the basic structure of the manuscript that confront them. Journal editors are becoming burdened with an ever-increasing number of manuscript submissions from non-English speaking authors, worldwide. Reviewers do not wish to be burdened with papers that are poorly crafted. A good author’s editor, while working on behalf of the author, really manages the best interests of all stakeholders in balance (author, editor, peer reviewer). This presentation will explore these dynamics and highlight the value of various forms of editorial review prior to manuscript submission.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
