Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults aged 65 and over. About 20-30% of older adults who fall suffer injuries that reduce mobility and independence. Falls can be caused by both internal factors related to an individual like medical conditions or gait impairments as well as external environmental hazards. Key risk factors for falls include a history of previous falls, certain medical conditions, polypharmacy, environmental hazards, and the use of restraints which can actually increase fall risk.
