This document discusses Facebook privacy and settings. It provides tips for keeping a private profile, including checking privacy settings before posting, using the Privacy Checkup tool, and keeping settings updated as they change. However, it notes that Facebook collects various user data through user activity and interactions, as well as from other sources like friends and advertising partners. Some public profile information like name, profile pictures, gender and username cannot be fully hidden. The document advises being conscious of all online activity and data shared since Facebook uses this for advertising and has broad legal rights to collect and use personal information.

Facebook is an online social networking service. Its name comes from a colloquialism for the directory given to students at some American universities.[5] Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.[6] The founders had initially limited the website's membership to Harvard students, but later expanded it to colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before it opened to high-school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. Facebook now allows anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website

CIS 2015-Rationing Identity in the Internet of Things- Steve WilsonCloudIDSummit
The usual response to identity problems like fraud has been to pile on more identity. On the Internet now we have too much identity! Too much identifiable data seeps out of everything we do online. But in the Internet of Things, Personal Information may pour from everything we do, period. Do we need every new appliance to have its own privacy policy? It depends on whether networked devices are working for their buyers or their vendors. Here we’ll look at how smart devices are smart enough to control data flows and protect their users’ identity and privacy.

Many people do not use Facebook for several reasons. Many are extremely concerned about their privacy and fearful of sharing information with the wrong people. Most of these people are not aware of how they can enjoy Facebook and limit their vulnerabilities and exposure. Hewie Poplock will present a program “Facebook, How to Get Started Safely” to CFCS on March 16.
He will show the many favorable uses of Facebook, and how you can connect easily to many old & new friends and places. He will also show how to use Facebook’s settings to protect your information, while enjoying the service. He will show you how you can be a “lurker” or be active and yet be safe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2. What is Facebook?
Facebook is defined as a place to connect with
friends, upload photos and videos, exchange
messages and update statuses.
It connects people in all corners of the world, and
people can choose to be defined as a “Student at
Harvard University” or as “Currently living in
Toronto” to help people find you more easily.
In general, it is a great tool to let your friends see
what you’re up to – as long as that’s what your
intention is.
3. Recently there has been added attention
brought to the forefront when it comes to
Facebook privacy, thanks to their newly
instated messenger app. Now, if you’re using
Facebook mobile and someone sends you a
private message, you can’t read it unless you
download the app or log on to the desktop
site.
4. So, what?
Why does it matter that we have to download
and access an app to gain information that was
intended for us in the first place?
Several issues and concerns have been brought
up about the new app:
• Why does it need access to my microphone? Will it record
my conversations/messages?
• Why does it require access to my contacts, and why does it
want to edit, read and send SMS messages on my behalf?
All pretty legitimate concerns, if you ask me.
5. Facebook claims that...
• It only requires access to your
microphone in order to allow you to
make voice calls and add sound to
videos sent through the app
• It only requires access to SMS
messages so that it can send
confirmation texts to the number
you have added to your profile
...So why are we still asking these
questions?
6. BECAUSE FACEBOOK
MAKES PRIVACY
SETTINGS DIFFICULT TO
UNDERSTAND
Like most legal documents, Facebook’s
privacy settings can be complicated. They
have improved, but they still have a long way
to go.
7. So, how do I know if I’m making the
right decisions?
Here are some tips if you’re
looking to keep your profile
as private as possible:
1. Always check the privacy
setting before posting a
status update or
changing your profile
picture. This has been
made simpler on the
mobile app, as you can
see in this screenshot:
8. 2. Use the new “Privacy Checkup” tool to make
sure you’re showing what you intend to
show, and hiding what you don’t. (This is
located in the top right corner on the desktop
site)
9. 3. Play with your settings and use the “View As”
tool to see how your information is being
displayed.
10. 4. This one should be easiest to follow. Be conscious of your online
activity. Everything you “like”, share and post on your page is
affiliated with your Facebook. By having a Facebook page, you
hand over the right to have your personal information collected by
Facebook as data.
Also, understand that your person may be used to advertise for
companies throughout Facebook (think of seeing those
advertisements saying “Jessica Scott and 6 other friends like
Michael Kors”) Here is the clause from the Privacy Policy that
notifies you of this:
“You give us permission to use your name, profile picture,
content, and information in connection with commercial,
sponsored, or related content (such as a brand you like) served or
enhanced by us. This means, for example, that you permit a
business or other entity to pay us to display your name and/or
profile picture with your content or information, without any
compensation to you. If you have selected a specific audience for
your content or information, we will respect your choice when we
use it.”
11. 5. Keep up-to-date on Privacy settings. Like
social media, they are constantly changing,
so make sure you don’t fall behind. Unless of
course, you like the whole world-wide web
having access to your information.
12. Here are some important excerpts
from Facebook’s Legal Info.
• We receive information about you from your friends and
others, such as when they upload your contact information,
post a photo of you, tag you in a photo or status update, or
at a location, or add you to a group.
• We receive data about you whenever you use or are
running Facebook, such as when you look at another
person's timeline, send or receive a message, search for a
friend or a Page, click on, view or otherwise interact with
things, use a Facebook mobile app, or make purchases
through Facebook.
• When you post things like photos or videos on Facebook,
we may receive additional related data (or metadata), such
as the time, date, and place you took the photo or video.
13. Interesting Facts Part 2
• Sometimes we get data from our affiliates or
our advertising partners, customers and other
third parties that helps us (or them) deliver
ads, understand online activity, and generally
make Facebook better. For example, an
advertiser may tell us information about you
(like how you responded to an ad on Facebook
or on another site) in order to measure the
effectiveness of - and improve the quality of -
ads.
14. Information that is ALWAYS public
• The types of information listed below are always publicly available, and
they are treated just like information you decided to make public:
• Name: This helps your friends and family find you. If you are
uncomfortable sharing your real name, you can always delete your
account.
• Profile Pictures and Cover Photos: These help your friends and family
recognize you. If you are uncomfortable making any of these photos
public, you can always delete them. Unless you delete them, when you
add a new profile picture or cover photo, the previous photo will remain
public in your profile picture or cover photo album.
• Networks: This helps you see who you will be sharing information with
before you choose "Friends and Networks" as a custom audience. If you
are uncomfortable making your network public, you can leave the
network.
• Gender: This allows us to refer to you properly.
• Username and User ID: These allow you to give out a custom link to your
timeline or Page, receive email at your Facebook email address, and help
make Facebook Platform possible.
