 Friends will also be able to view your profile information
and share things on your Timeline.
Definition
Like
 Whenever your friends share something on Facebook,
you can choose to like the post. This is just a simple way
of showing your friends that you enjoyed what they
shared.
 You can also like the Facebook Page for certain
businesses and organizations to receive updates about
them in your News Feed.
Status updates
 One of the most common things people share on
Facebook are status updates---short, text-based posts
that your friends can see and comment on.
 You can also post other things, like photos, videos, links,
and more. Your friends will be able to see your post on
their News feeds and the things you share will also be
posted to your Timeline.
 Status:
 1. a : position or rank in relation to others <the status of a
father>
b : relative rank in a hierarchy of prestige; especially : high prestige

webster.com/dictionary.
Definition of status
Notification
 You’ll receive a notification in an email message and on
your Home page whenever someone interacts with you
on Facebook.
 For example: you’ll be notified when someone adds you
as a friend, likes or comments on something you’ve
shared, or sends you a private message.
Timeline
 Also known as your profile page, the Timeline is where
you’ll share information about yourself on Facebook.
For example, it’s where you’ll post your profile picture,
share basic information about yourself, and more.
 Whenever you share something on Facebook, it will
appear on your Timeline, as well as your friends’ News
Feeds.
News feed
 The News feed is a stream of updates from your friends
and any Facebook Pages you follow. This is where you’ll
probably spend most of your time on Facebook, since
it’s where you can view and comment on what’s
happening with all of your friends.
Tag
 Friends can tag you in photos and posts they share on
Facebook. Posts you’re tagged in will appear on your
Timeline.
Comment
 Whenever your friends share on Facebook, you can
leave a comment about their posts.
Understanding Facebook
Privacy
Facebook Privacy Settings
• Only me
• Anything shared with this option will only be visible to you.
• Lists
• You can share with lists of friend to help keep sensitive
information from some people.
• Friends
• The most common option sharing with everyone you’ve added as
friend.
• Public
• The least secure privacy setting. It shares information with
everyone on Facebook.
 Why is Facebook privacy important?
 If you choose to share things publicly on Facebook, anyone
with an account will be able to find and view your Facebook
information, posts, and activity. This could impact your
privacy in a variety of ways. For example:
• You could be sharing personal information you’d rather keep
private, such as your birth date and address.
• Anything you post, such as photos, comments, and status
updates, will be visible to people you don’t know.
• Embarrassing or unflattering posts could negatively affect
your personal and professional reputation.
• Third-party websites and applications can access and share
information from your Facebook account.
 Even if you customize your privacy settings, it's important
to understand that the things you share on Facebook are
visible to a lot of other people. This is because Facebook is
designed to be more open and social than traditional
communication tools.
 For example: let's suppose you post a photo on a friend's
Timeline. By default, that photo will be visible to all of your
friends on Facebook, not just the person you shared it with.
The photo will also be visible to anyone who is friends with
your friend. This is one reason people enjoy using
Facebook—it's easy to share with lots of people at the same
time.
Sharing and privacy
Apps and games privacy
When you use an app or game, you're giving it
permission to do certain things with your
Facebook account. This might include accessing
your profile data, posting on your Timeline, and
viewing information about your friends.
You may not realize that your Facebook account extends
across the Web. The Facebook Platform is a tool that lets
other websites connect with your Facebook account and
view your public information. If you've ever seen an
option to Sign in With Facebook on another website,
you've seen the Facebook Platform in action.
Facebook privacy across the Web
Platform apps let you link your Facebook account to an
external site. When you add a platform app, you'll be able
to use your Facebook user name and password to sign in
to that site. Your activity on that site may also appear on
your Timeline. For instance, a music-sharing site might
post information about the music you've listened to
recently, while a news site could share the articles you've
read.
Platform apps
Facebook has several policies in place to help protect
minors. For example, children under the age of 13 are
not allowed to use Facebook. Facebook also offers
extra privacy protections for users under the age of
18. However, these protections aren't very strong. For
example, minors do show up in public search results,
and anyone can view their most basic information,
like their names and profile pictures.
Facebook privacy for minors

Editor's Notes

  1. that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. Originally designed for college students, Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world's largest social network, with more than 1 billion users worldwide. Have you ever wondered why people like using Facebook? After all, there are already lots of other ways to communicate online, such as email, instant messaging, and so on. What makes Facebook unique is the ability to connect and share with the people you care about at the same time. For many, having a Facebook account is now an expected part of being online, much like having your own email address. And since Facebook is so popular, other websites have worked to integrate Facebook. This means you can use a single Facebook account to sign in to different services across the Web.

  8. Let's take a look at these settings in action. For example, let's suppose you set all of the information on your Timeline to be visible only to friends. In this case, this is how your Timeline would appear to your friends.
  9. By contrast, this is how it would appear to someone who isn't your friend on Facebook. Notice how most of the information is hidden, but the name, profile photo, and cover photo are still visible.
  10. As long as you're somewhat careful about the things you share, Facebook doesn't pose a serious risk to your privacy. Before you share anything on Facebook, such as a comment or a status update, you'll need to consider how comfortable you are with many people seeing that information. If you wouldn't feel comfortable sharing something in a public place, you may not want to share it on Facebook either.
  11. ****At some point, you may receive invitations from your friends to use Facebook apps and games. These are applications that let you interact with Facebook and your friends in different ways. A majority of these applications are created by third-party developers, not by Facebook itself. Although you can't use apps or games without allowing the requested permissions, most apps let you customize these settings after you've started using them. We'll explain how to do this in our lesson on Adjusting Your Privacy Settings.
  12. You can control how other sites work with your Facebook account by changing your app settings. We'll explain how to do this in our lesson on Adjusting Your Privacy Settings.
  13. ****Even if you're an experienced Facebook user, modifying your privacy settings for the first time can be a little confusing. And because Facebook can change these options without much notice, it's important to review your privacy settings periodically. ***Privacy Shortcuts is the fastest way to change your privacy settings.
  14. ***In addition to your overall privacy settings, you can control who sees every thing you share with the audience selector. This allows you to change your default privacy settings and make things more private or less private. If you change your mind later, you can go back and change the privacy level for that post at any time.
  15. ***Keep in mind that modifying the audience selector will change the default audience setting for future posts. You should always double-check the audience selector before sharing anything on Facebook.
  16. ****A tag is a way to identify people on Facebook by posting their names and a link to their individual Timelines. Your friends can tag you in photos, as well as in other posts, including status updates. Anyone who can see these posts will be able to click the tag and view your Timeline. The tagged post will also be visible on your Timeline, your News Feed, and your friends' feeds. ***While tags make it easy to connect with your friends on Facebook, your friends may occasionally tag you in posts you don't want to share. One way to prevent yourself from being tagged in potentially embarrassing photos and posts is to manage your tagging settings.
  17. ***If you ever need to review or modify what you've posted in the past, you can use the Activity Log.
  18. ***You can also hide and delete posts directly from your Timeline.
  19. *** I will show you the next slide.
  20. ***If you want to stop certain people from bothering you on Facebook, you can block them. When you block someone, that person can no longer communicate with you or send friend requests.  ***From here, you can block users from contacting you on Facebook. Just enter the name of the person you want to block, then click Block. You can also block entire applications if you wish to stop receive invitations to certain apps and games.
  21. ***Facebook is all about sharing with your friends. You can share lots of things, such as status updates, photos, links, and even your location. You can also share something directly with your friends by posting on their Timelines.
  22. ***One of the most common things people share on Facebook is a status update—a short text-based post your friends can read and comment on. When you post a status update, it will appear on your Timeline, as well as your friends' News Feeds.
  23. ***In this example, we only want to share with our friends on Facebook, so we'll leave this unchanged.
  24. ***Facebook allows you to share much more than just status updates. For example, you can share:
  25. ***You'll probably find social plug-ins for Facebook across the Web on other websites. Social plug-ins will usually be represented by a small Facebook icon or Like button, which allow you to share something from the site on Facebook without leaving that page.
  26. ***Facebook chat and messages allow you to communicate privately with your friends on Facebook. Unlike the other things you share on Facebook, such as status updates or photos, chats and messages will not be shared with all of your friends or posted on your Timeline. But it can be shared… ***Messages work just like chats, except they allow you to send private messages to friends who are offline—that is, friends who aren't currently signed in to Facebook. In that sense, messages are similar to a traditional email service.
  27. ***Once you start using Facebook, you may need to modify your Account settings. These settings control things like your password, notifications, and more. Changing these settings is optional, and you can modify them at any time.
