LETS
BEGIN
EXTERIOR LIGHTING SYSTEM
 Exterior lighting or outdoor lighting is defined as the fixed artificial lighting to illuminate the areas,
where there are no roofs, i.e. outdoor areas.
 Exterior lighting defines space, enhances colour and reveals the intricacies of texture and forms in
night.
 The aim of the exterior lighting is to illuminate the outside area, to maintain or to improve visual
performance of the persons conducting human activities.
 Landscape lighting or garden lighting refers to the use of outdoor illumination of private gardens and
public landscapes; for the enhancement and purposes of safety, night-time aesthetics, accessibility,
security, recreation and sports, and social and event uses.
2.
PURPOSE OF EXTERIOR LIGHTING?
 Provides a safe and secure environment at night.
 Exterior lighting enhances visibility and utility of your
property, outer space after sun goes down.
 Extend the use of parks and walkways in the night.
 To enhance notable/recognisable features.
 To enhance travel on the roads and at the intersections.
 Beauty, hospitality and drama are enhanced by the proper
selection and placement of exteriors lights.
3.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
STREET LIGHTS
 A street light, light pole, lamppost, street lamp or lamp standard is a
raised source of light on the edge of a road or path.
 They are used to light roadways and walkways at night.
 Many lamps have light-sensitive photocells that activate the lamp
automatically when needed, at times when there is little to no
ambient light, such as at dusk, dawn, or at the onset of dark weather
conditions.
 This function in older lighting systems could be performed with the
aid of a solar dial. Many street light systems are being connected
underground instead of wiring from one utility post to another.
4.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
FLOOD LIGHTS
 A floodlight is a broad-beamed, high-intensity artificial light. They
are often used to illuminate outdoor playing fields while an
outdoor sports event is being held during low-light conditions.
 More focused kinds are often used as a stage lighting
instrument in live performances such as concerts and plays.
 Flood lighting can be used to illuminate work zones or outdoor
playing fields during night-time hours.
 The most common type of floodlights are metal halide and high
pressure sodium lights.
5.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
LANDSCAPE LIGHTS
 Landscape lighting is a wide-encompassing type of outdoor lights, as
it is used for both private and public spaces.
 Parks, office building terraces and public verandas depend on
landscape lighting —such as globes, spotlights and LED light
fixtures—for security and public enjoyment.
 Landscape lighting includes core elements of organic design, LED
use, light pollution, scale and controls.
 Landscape lights such as lanterns and sconces are used to highlight
floral and greenery, as well as outdoor industrial spaces, emphasizing
architectural features like columns. Like flood lights, landscape lights
bring utility to outdoor spaces at night and can aid in crime prevention.
6.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
SECURITY LIGHTS
 In the field of physical security, security lighting is lighting that
intended to deter or detect intrusions or other criminal activity on a
piece of real property. It can also be used to increase a feeling of
safety.
 These are extremely bright lights used to deter crime. Security
lights may include floodlights and be activated with PIR switches
that detect moving heat sources in darkness.
 Example – Motion Sensor Lights
7.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
SPOT LIGHTS
 Spot Light is a lamp projecting a narrow, intense beam of light
directly on to a place or person, especially a performer on stage.
 It’s a general term because spotlights become a certain type of
light when used in a certain way. For example, if you point a
spotlight upwards at a wall, it becomes an up light that creates a
wall grazing effect.
 Spotlights can range in brightness and amount of area they
cover. They often illuminate statues, plants, walls, patios, and
anything you can point it at.
8.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
BOLLARD LIGHTS
 Bollards lights are a part of exterior lighting systems designated to
light up walkways or pathways. They are simply lights on posts
meant to form a boundary, like those permanently blocking off a
streets from cars.
 They are commonly used to keep traffic away from people, parks,
and buildings.
 Bollards with lights can become a featured addition to illuminate and
accent landscaping, walkways, buildings and parking areas.
9.
TYPES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTS
STRING LIGHTS
 A rope light is primarily used as a decorative lighting fixture,
featuring small light bulbs linked together and encased in a
PVC jacket to create a string of lights.
 Perfect for hanging through trees and over hardscapes so you
can truly enjoy them. They provide a more subtle light for a
picturesque scene.
 These are also called Christmas lights.
10.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR
EXTERIORS
 PATH LIGHTING – This technique is used primarily for safety
to highlight sidewalks drives or any path to ensure safety
passage at night.
 Choose pathway lights offering down lighting with emphasis
placed on fixtures that incorporates diffused or shielded lamps
 Avoid lighting that shines in the eyes. Since path light fixtures
become an integral part of the landscape during the day,
attention should be paid to placement and daytime
appearance.
 Typical Examples – Tulip light, Lanterns, Specialty lights
11.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR
EXTERIORS
 STEP/DECK LIGHTING – Step lighting brings deck to
life in night and help us to navigate stairs safely during
night.
 Its fixtures can be installed beneath benches, as
recessed light in the risers of step and as a surface
lights on vertical posts.
 Typical fixtures – Spot/accent light, specialty lights
12.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR
EXTERIORS
 UNDERWATER LIGHTING –Underwater lighting
highlights underwater plant materials and captures
light to show off depth or imaginative design.
 Fixtures submersed in water features create an extra
special effect at night
 Illuminating water-bodies not only increase their
attractiveness but also ensures safety in dark.
 Cascading fountains and falls reflect light in their
movement adding a visual perspective to the sound
of ripping or spraying water.
13.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR
EXTERIORS
 UPLIGHTING – Uplighting refers to lights that are
mounted to shine their light upward and are installed
at low or ground level.
 DOWNLIGHTING – Down-lighting refers to lights
that shine their light downward; so they would be
installed at higher to point to create downward light
effect.
 MOON LIGHTING - This technique is achieved by
placing light fixtures within branches of a mature tree
or by attaching a fixture to a nearby wall that shines
through the branches. This effect will cast unique
shadows in your landscape.
14.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR
EXTERIORS
 SILHOUETTING - Silhouetting is created when the image of a
distinctive plant tree statue or other landscape object is reflected
against a wall or other vertical surface.
 Lights are placed behind the object to direct the light upward onto the
backdrop to create this dramatic effect.
 SHADOWING - This involves washing a feature such as a tree or
statue so that it casts a shadow on a wall or fence. The play of light
and darkness can be quite intriguing, especially if the object is
affected by the breeze.
 Lighting the object from low down and angling upward can provide a
larger than life dramatic effect
15.
These techniques are often used to create an aesthetics and visual
impact.
Choosing The Right Type Of Exterior
Lighting
 When it comes to selecting the right type of outdoor
lighting fixtures, utility and need should be
important decision factors.
 Fixtures for security differ from those for large
areas or decorative landscape lighting.
 Check out this chart to determine the best type of
outdoor lighting and outdoor fixture for your needs.
