This was a collaborative project to design a research guide for undergraduate students researching the 1960's Civil Rights Movement. The guide itself lives here: http://sferrari.org/si647rg/websites/ But this is a poster that I developed to showcase our work for an exposition showcasing projects by students at the University of Michigan's School of Information. In a field of apps and wearable prototypes I wanted to demonstrate that library science is still doing good work and utilizes many of the same principles of UX work.

The KZSU Project South Interviews
This collection H transcripts and audio recordings of meetings and interviews with Civil Rights workers in the South. They were recorded by several students from Stanford who are affiliated with the campus radio station KZSU. It was during the summer of 1965 when the project was sponsored by the Institute of American History at Stanford. The collection has a lot of information that are related black history. They include; interviews of members of the Congress of Racial Equality, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. We also have the transcripts of formal and informal remarks of persons working with smaller blacks associated with the civil rights movement and transcribed action tapes of civil rights workers canvassing voters, conducting freedom schools.

The Trouble with Gay Rights: Race
and the Politics of Sexual Orientation
in Philadelphia, 1969-1982

In 1985 the veteran civil rights activist Bayard Rustin joined a gay and lesbian coalition in New
York City that was about to make a final push for passage of an amendment to the city's
administrative code to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Rustin wrote
to the city council and to Mayor Edward I. Koch, vowed to lobby the four opposing African
American councilmen, and called for "the extension of freedom and justice for all Americans."'
Unusual for Rustin, in this instance his activism ceremoniously concluded rather than pio-
neered a social movement for change when the city council passed the bill the next year.
More than fifteen years before, the first gay liberationists had introduced such a bill
that was defeated by stiff opposition from conservative politicians and religious leaders.
That mobilization helped spark organizing and demonstrating for similar laws in cities
and towns during the 1970s and 1980s—a local political movement and discourse that
remains largely unexamined. In recent writing on sexual politics, however, Matthew D.
Lassiter, Robert O . Self, Whitney Strub, and others have analyzed controversies over
gay visibility in the media, conflicts over the regulation of urban vice, and the political
cooptation of pornography to understand shifts in American liberalism, and they suggest
that the rise of gay liberation served as a foil against which liberals reconfigured the
public/private divide and conservatives mobilized a rightward political turn. From
another perspective, despite the rise of the New Right, the cause of gays and lesbians did
advance during the 1970s, with the proliferation of community pride, new national organi-
zations, and the passage of protective ordinances. Utilizing a case study of Philadelphia, this
essay examines how the pursuit of equal protection led gays and lesbians to clash with reli-
gious and racial conservatives who challenged not only their rights but also their legitimacy

TOPIC CENTER: CIVIL RIGHTS REIGNITES, 1965-1968
During the civil rights movement of the mid-20th century, African Americans took up many different strategies in their struggle for political and social equality. Beginning in the 1950s, many activists turned to leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., who advocated nonviolent protest and civil resistance as the primary means to secure equal rights. However, by 1965, many African Americans were frustrated by the racism and discrimination that continued in their daily lives. By this time, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had been passed, which banned discrimination based on race and ended racial segregation in schools and the workplace. This legislation, while a major victory for civil rights leaders, did not necessarily trickle down immediately to become reality for most African Americans. For them, everyday life was still characterized by poor socioeconomic conditions and discrimination. As such, other movements that advocated for black civil rights began to develop along the mainstream civil rights movement, the most prominent of which was the black power movement. Epitomized by the Black Panther Party, this movement advocated self-defense and black nationalism in opposition to the nonviolence of such leaders as King.
Urban Riots and Violent Protest
By the time the Civil Rights Act was finally passed, African Americans had spent decades fighting for equality in a society that had viewed them as second-class citizens. Even though slavery had been abolished and African Americans had won the right to vote, deep-seated racism persisted. Accepted social practices like segregation in housing and education kept blacks relegated to the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, with little opportunity to climb up.
In response to these injustices, civil rights leaders like King advocated for nonviolent protest, insisting that reacting in violence would only feed into the negative stereotypes of African Americans that formed the basis for racism. However, by the mid-1960s, frustrations exploded. Urban unrest such as the 1965 Watts riot in Los Angeles and the 1967 Detroit riot drew media attention to the realities of black life in, making the situation something that white Americans could no longer ignore.

America has come a long way regarding the acceptance of African Americans as true members of society. Though there is still a long way to go before complete social equality is achieved, the implementation of groundbreaking pro-integration legislation has created a much more tolerant environment for modern African Americans. Despite the suppression of African American freedoms via brutal acts of terrorism by the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Migration, the Brown v. Board of Education verdict, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 have proved substantial in creating a more balanced society for African Americans.
Originally formed in 1866- just one year after the abolition of slavery- the Ku Klux Klan’s primary goal as a terrorist organization was to deter African Americans from exercising their newly acquired rights as free people (especially voting rights). In order to achieve this, Klan members routinely terrorized African Americans as well as black sympathizers with various acts of violence- most notably lynching. Although lynching is among the most famous of their vile methods, they employed a variety of tactics ranging from “threats and intimidations to… killing” (Constructing the American Past 13) in an effort to preserve white supremacy. Perhaps the most striking truth about the Klan is that its members were really everyday citizens. As explained by Pierce Harper in an 1871 testimony of Ku Klux Klan victims, “you deal wit’ ‘em in de stores in de day time” (Constructing the American Past 7). Though the organization was banned in the late 1870s, it was later re-established in 1915, in part as a response to the Great Migration.
Lasting from 1900 to 1970, the Great Migration was a period of African American migration to the Northern US that was primarily inspired by the desire for industrial work, especially “steel mills, mines, construction, and meat-packing” (US History 549). During this period, approximately 6 million African Americans moved to the largely unfamiliar North, lowering the percentage of blacks in the South by around 37%. This rapid increase in the population of this somewhat foreign demographic did not bode well with the Northern whites. Aside from racially-motivated acts of violence and the re-emergence of the Ku Klux Klan, blacks were systematically sectioned off via a process known as redlining. In this process, certain areas were marked on the map as bad investments, and this was used as an excuse to “deny home loans to qualified buyers” (US History 550). The effects of this can still be felt today, as many cities in the North and Midwest are extremely segregated by race. However, despite the initial backlash from whites, the sudden convergence of different regional groups resulted in vast exchanges in culture throughout the African American community.

After a major overhaul three years ago, the University of Michigan Medical School’s flagship website for prospective students was getting glowing feedback. Great news, right? But … now what? What comes after “good”?
This talk presents a case study of how we dug in to a new round of user research to deepen our understanding of the application journey of prospective medical students and present the next iteration of an already successful site.
With the journalist’s question of “what did you know, when?” we mapped the information-seeking behavior of prospective students, and learned how the lens of time could give us new insights into how to organize and present information to users.

Creating a One-handed User Interface for Drones
This document describes a student team's project to design a one-handed user interface for controlling drones to make drone flight more accessible. The team consists of four masters students with relevant experience and skills. Currently, drone apps are not accessible, do not allow for multitasking, and have unhelpful feedback. The team proposes a single-handed interface using different finger gestures to control direction, altitude, and rotation. They believe this will have wide impact as drone use increases and argue for inclusive design. Next steps are to develop a prototype, add more controls, and refine the design to pitch to manufacturers.

This was a group presentation to discuss the contextual inquiry work we did for our client the Jackson District LIbrary, and how that work informed our information flow as a diversity multi-disciplinary group.
Usability Testing: Interviews
This was a group presentation for the course SI 622:Needs Assessment and Usability Testing, at the University of Michigan School of Information during the Winter of 2014. We conducted these interviews as part of our usability study for our client. We briefed the class on our client, methods, findings, recommendations, and takeaways from that portion of the project. .
QuasiCon 2014, "The Embedded Librarian: Reference Services in the Trenches"
This was a presentation as part of the UMSI student ALA QuasiCon 2014. QuasiCon is an un-conference conference which consists of a mixture of presentation, lightning talks, and discussion sections. I presented research I had done on embedded librarians for my class on "Information Resources and Services". The keynote speaker actually addressed the same topic, so we complimented each other quite well.
The research I did on embedded librarianship actually fed into my passion for fieldwork in UX, especially fieldwork where the researcher works side by side with the user.
Exposure Series: Trans-Siberian Train Adventures
I gave this PechaKucha like presentation on my experience traveling the Trans-Siverian railroad during the summer of 2013, as part of the North Quad Exposure Series. The series is intended for members of the University, Ann Arbor, and Detroit community to present and discuss on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics. What was intended to be a 6 minute 40 second presentation turned into a 35 minute talk due to technical complications. However, even after 35 minutes I still had stories to tell relating back to our rules of travel.
Shure Design Jam: Collaborative Spaces
A 6 hour design jam to come up with ideas for how to create more flexible and collaborative spaces at Shure. This was an example of sometimes high tech solutions not being the right ones.
Information Architecture: Building Story- The de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA
I presented this for the course SI658: Information Architecture, Winter 2014. The purpose of this assignment was to pick a building we had experienced and discuss whether we considered it a good building or bad building and defend it based on the IA principles discussed in class.
I decided to challenge myself by choosing a building that I did not consider to be beautiful, and defend whether or not it was good based on Vitruvius' principles of architecture.

- 2. This guide is intended to provide a starting point for University of Michigan undergraduates in their research. Although this guide focuses on civil rights in the 1960s, this decade is by no means either the start or end point for civil rights efforts, which extend back to the Reconstruction Period in the South following the Civil War and continue to this day, albeit in a variety of forms. While numerous efforts for equality occurred since the mid-nineteenth century, it was the events of the 1950s, such as Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and the refusal of Rosa Parks to give up her seat on a city bus (also 1954), that precipitated the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
