Presentation Outline
● The Dynamic Model of Language, introduced by Schneider (2007), is an
influential theory that explains the postcolonial phenomenon. It categorizes English
users, contexts, and varieties based on the nation-state as its primary conceptual base.
The model takes into account ideas of identity, linguistic interaction, and
accommodation, and offers a comprehensive framework for researching the
development of postcolonial Englishes across the globe.
● The majority of the model have been synchronic categorizations of users, contexts,
and varieties, in most cases employing the nation-state as their principal conceptual
base. These include Strevens’ (1980) map-and-branch family tree of English,
McArthur’s (1987) wheel of world English as well as the most familiar framework,
the classification of states and students into English as a native language (ENL),
second language (ESL) and foreign language (EFL).
Theoretical Underpinnings of the
Dynamic Model
● Dynamic models are a powerful tool that experts can use to assess and predict how
complex systems will behave over time.
● The structural changes at the levels of lexis, grammar, and pronunciation are key
factors in the study of language in society.
● The movement of one group into another group’s territory can be categorized under a
small number of headings, and the competing yet complementary perspectives of
indigenes and settlers are vital to understanding the evolutionary phases of a system.
● Dynamic models establish intellectual spaces for people to speak for themselves, in
their voices, and thus produce cultural discourses of philosophy, language, society,
and economy.
● The most fundamental flaws of postcolonial theory, such as ideological bias, may
affect the application and evaluation of the Dynamic Model in particular societal
contexts.
Main Ideas of Dynamic Model
● Dynamic models can predict system behavior over time, identify the best course of
action for achieving objectives, and investigate the effects of different variables on
system behavior.
● Dynamic models can simulate numerous scenarios and evaluate the efficacy of
various treatments before putting them into practice in actual applications.
Strengths of Dynamic Model
● Developing dynamic models can be difficult and complex, particularly when working
with stochastic or nonlinear systems.
● A substantial quantity of data must be collected in order to ensure correct modeling of
system behavior, which can be time-consuming and expensive.
● The accuracy of predictions made using dynamic models depends on the assumptions
and information utilized to create them.
● The Dynamic Model’s principal innovative features are that it is holistic in imposing
an overarching and unifying perspective, which may be a limitation when studying
certain systems.
Weakness of Dynamic Model
1. Language evolution as a competition-and-selection process_
● The Dynamic Model recognizes that language evolution is a competition-and-
selection process, where linguistic variants emerge through competition among
speakers.
● This is a crucial concept in understanding the development of postcolonial Englishes
and the linguistic traits that emerge in new Englishes and Creoles.
2. Sociolinguistic histories of postcolonial Englishes__
●
● Understanding the sociolinguistic histories of postcolonial Englishes requires using
the Dynamic Model as a conceptual framework.
● The model takes into account historical, social, and cultural factors, such as slavery,
migration, suppression, resistance, and inequalities in race and gender, that have a
substantial impact on the evolution of linguistic variants.
Importance of Dynamic Model
● 3. Linguistic features of mixed varieties__
● The Dynamic Model provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing the
linguistic features of mixed varieties that result from the complex interplay of
historical, social, and cultural factors.
● The model demonstrates how specific linguistic traits develop through the
competition-and-selection process.
● 4. Universality of the competition-and-selection process
●
● The Dynamic Model recognizes that mixed variations are fundamentally the same
competition-and-selection process that most languages experience over their
historical evolution.
● This makes the model a valuable tool for investigating the development of language
in general, not just postcolonial Englishes.
Importance of Dynamic Model
Contd.
● The Dynamic Model of Postcolonial English Evolution is a complex linguistic convergence
process driven by identity re-writings and concomitant language modifications. There are five
main stages in the process, and each is distinguished by a particular set of characteristics. The
reconstruction of group identities in a colonial-contact environment led to the development of
Postcolonial Englishes.
● The five stages are:
1. Foundation
2. Exonormative Stabilization
3. Nativization
4. Endonormative Stabilization
5. Differentiation
The Dynamic Model of the
Evolution of Postcolonial
Englishes
● Bangladesh is currently in the Exonormative Stabilization Phase, which is the second
phase in the dynamic model in terms of the English language, according to the
Dynamic Model of Language. This stage demonstrates the swift expansion of English
across a number of industries, including business, government, media, and education.
English Expansion in Bangladesh
and a Case Study
● In order to refer to a case study at this point, I have chosen an article. Because of Bangladesh’s
colonial history and the language’s importance in international communication, Bangladeshi
English is widely spoken as a second language and has unique characteristics. This study
identifies the distinctive accent, intonation, and vocabulary of Bangladeshi English and
demonstrates how Bengali, the nation’s official language, has an impact on these features. Despite
such objections, it is possible to view Bangladeshi English as a crucial instrument for cross-
cultural communication in both business and education.
● This case study promotes the necessity for more research on the many English dialects around the
world in order to promote diversity and inclusivity in international communication, emphasizing
the significance of understanding Bangladeshi English characteristics in order to ensure good
communication. This further affirms and supports the notion that Bangladeshi English is a product
of the dynamic model’s second phase.
English Expansion in Bangladesh
and a Case Study
● As a non-native English speaker from Bangladesh, I understand the importance of
learning English as an international language to function in contemporary society.
Similarly, in research and decision-making, the use of dynamic models provides a
theoretical foundation for understanding complex systems and identifying crucial
variables.
● Dynamic models offer a formidable method for comprehending intricate systems and
patterns of behavior over time.
● By maintaining linguistic variants, correctness, and reliability, dynamic models can
provide insightful information on the mechanisms that underlie change.
● The use of dynamic models has important potential advantages for both research and
decision-making, ultimately assisting us in making better decisions.

  • 6. ● Developing dynamic models can be difficult and complex, particularly when working with stochastic or nonlinear systems. ● A substantial quantity of data must be collected in order to ensure correct modeling of system behavior, which can be time-consuming and expensive. ● The accuracy of predictions made using dynamic models depends on the assumptions and information utilized to create them. ● The Dynamic Model’s principal innovative features are that it is holistic in imposing an overarching and unifying perspective, which may be a limitation when studying certain systems. Weakness of Dynamic Model
  • 7. 1. Language evolution as a competition-and-selection process_ ● The Dynamic Model recognizes that language evolution is a competition-and- selection process, where linguistic variants emerge through competition among speakers. ● This is a crucial concept in understanding the development of postcolonial Englishes and the linguistic traits that emerge in new Englishes and Creoles. 2. Sociolinguistic histories of postcolonial Englishes__ ● ● Understanding the sociolinguistic histories of postcolonial Englishes requires using the Dynamic Model as a conceptual framework. ● The model takes into account historical, social, and cultural factors, such as slavery, migration, suppression, resistance, and inequalities in race and gender, that have a substantial impact on the evolution of linguistic variants. Importance of Dynamic Model
  • 8. ● 3. Linguistic features of mixed varieties__ ● The Dynamic Model provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing the linguistic features of mixed varieties that result from the complex interplay of historical, social, and cultural factors. ● The model demonstrates how specific linguistic traits develop through the competition-and-selection process. ● 4. Universality of the competition-and-selection process ● ● The Dynamic Model recognizes that mixed variations are fundamentally the same competition-and-selection process that most languages experience over their historical evolution. ● This makes the model a valuable tool for investigating the development of language in general, not just postcolonial Englishes. Importance of Dynamic Model Contd.
  • 9. ● The Dynamic Model of Postcolonial English Evolution is a complex linguistic convergence process driven by identity re-writings and concomitant language modifications. There are five main stages in the process, and each is distinguished by a particular set of characteristics. The reconstruction of group identities in a colonial-contact environment led to the development of Postcolonial Englishes. ● The five stages are: 1. Foundation 2. Exonormative Stabilization 3. Nativization 4. Endonormative Stabilization 5. Differentiation The Dynamic Model of the Evolution of Postcolonial Englishes

  • 11. ● Bangladesh is currently in the Exonormative Stabilization Phase, which is the second phase in the dynamic model in terms of the English language, according to the Dynamic Model of Language. This stage demonstrates the swift expansion of English across a number of industries, including business, government, media, and education. English Expansion in Bangladesh and a Case Study
  • 12. ● In order to refer to a case study at this point, I have chosen an article. Because of Bangladesh’s colonial history and the language’s importance in international communication, Bangladeshi English is widely spoken as a second language and has unique characteristics. This study identifies the distinctive accent, intonation, and vocabulary of Bangladeshi English and demonstrates how Bengali, the nation’s official language, has an impact on these features. Despite such objections, it is possible to view Bangladeshi English as a crucial instrument for cross- cultural communication in both business and education. ● This case study promotes the necessity for more research on the many English dialects around the world in order to promote diversity and inclusivity in international communication, emphasizing the significance of understanding Bangladeshi English characteristics in order to ensure good communication. This further affirms and supports the notion that Bangladeshi English is a product of the dynamic model’s second phase. English Expansion in Bangladesh and a Case Study
  • 13. ● As a non-native English speaker from Bangladesh, I understand the importance of learning English as an international language to function in contemporary society. Similarly, in research and decision-making, the use of dynamic models provides a theoretical foundation for understanding complex systems and identifying crucial variables. ● Dynamic models offer a formidable method for comprehending intricate systems and patterns of behavior over time. ● By maintaining linguistic variants, correctness, and reliability, dynamic models can provide insightful information on the mechanisms that underlie change. ● The use of dynamic models has important potential advantages for both research and decision-making, ultimately assisting us in making better decisions.
