Experience from 10 months of University Linked Data at the Open University:
1. The Open University exposed its public data as linked open data to make the data more discoverable, reusable, and integrated with other datasets.
2. Exposing data as linked data provides benefits like increased transparency, data reuse internally and externally, and reduced costs of managing the university's public data.
3. Other UK universities have since followed the Open University's example in exposing their data as linked data.

In the media industry there is a great emphasis on providing descriptive metadata as part of the media assets to the consumers. Information extraction (IE) is considered an important tool for metadata generation process and its performance largely depend on the knowledge base it utilizes. The advances in the “Linked Data Cloud” research provide a great opportunity for generating such knowledge base that benefit from the participation of wider community. In this talk, I will discuss our experiences of utilizing Linked Data Cloud in conjunction with a GATE-based IE system.

Open Data and Higher Education: future gains and current practiceSu White
The arguments which promote the use and potential of open data in education can trace their roots back to scholarly communication communities.
The close symbiosis between the Web as we know it and the values and working practices of scholars in higher educational institutions has been acknowledged.
The work of HEIs is complex and extends well beyond research and education. Education is a costly and increasingly competitive business. Costs are associated not only with research and education but with a vast array of back office administrative functions and demands to publish performance indicators to the public domain.
This presentation will argue that HEIs are in a powerful position to couple the insights which accrue thanks to their roles as creators and early adopters of open data. Open data practices afford gains which complement the exchange of new knowledge, and the sharing of knowledge and information for public good - especially if it has been funded by the public purse.
Internally, insightful use of private open data had the potential to streamline administrative and educational processes. Evolving understandings of the potential and power of data driven approaches may enable institutions to gain economic and reputational advantage potentially driving down internal costs, streamlining aspects of the research process, making positive contributions to teaching and the support of teaching and learning, along with enhancing services which promote educational choice and student recruitment."
In 2012, the University of Idaho Library began implementing VIVO, an open-source Semantic Web application, both as a discovery layer for its fledgling institutional repository and as a database to describe, visualize, and report university research activity. The presenters will detail some of the challenges they encountered developing this resource, while discussing the tools and techniques they used for obtaining, editing, and uploading institutional data into the RDF-based VIVO system.

Virtual Research Networks: towards Research 2.0
In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks – with its extensive collaborative possibilities – will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services.
Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools.
Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments.
Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment.
Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

Organizational Implications of Data Science Environments in Education, Resear...Victoria Steeves
Data science (DS) poses key organizational challenges for academic institutions. DS is a multidisciplinary field that includes a range of research methodologies and fields of inquiry. DS as a domain is interested in many of the same issues as libraries: data access and curation, reproducibility, the value of ontologies, and open scholarship. At the same time, identifying opportunities to collaborate and deploy unified services can be challenging. The Data Science Environment (DSE) program, co-funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore and Alfred P. Sloan foundations, provides resources to help universities develop collaborations between researchers, develop tools in DS, and create new career paths for data scientists. Working groups within the DSE focus on reproducibility, career paths, education/training, research methods, space issues, and software/tools. This program has introduced new opportunities for libraries to explore how to engage with this community and consider how to bring the expertise in the DS community to bear on library missions and goals. In this panel, program members from each of the three partner universities, the University of Washington, New York University and the University of California, Berkeley, consider the research questions of the DSE and the organizational impact of these groups in the University as a whole and for the libraries specifically. The panel will employ a case-study presentation model framed through three lenses: the role of data sciences in information science, the
potential career paths for data scientists in libraries, and the potential
amplification of information services (e.g. data curation, institutional repositories, scholarly publishing).

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Experience from 10 months of University Linked Data
1. Experience from 10 months of University Linked Data Mathieu d’Aquin - @mdaquin Knowledge Media Institute, the Open University LUCERO project lucero-project.info – data.open.ac.uk
2. Linked Data As set of principles and technologies for a Web of Data Putting the “raw” data online in a standard, web enabled representation (RDF) Make the data Web addressable (URIs) Link with other data
4. The Open University The biggest university in the UK (200,000 students) One of the youngest (40 years) Most teaching done at a distance 1 campus, 13 regional centers Committed to “Open”: Open educational material available as podcasts (iTunes U), units of course material (OpenLearn), etc. Tradition of investing in new technology for teaching, learning, knowledge sharing, etc. Role of the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi)
5. So Linked Data for the OU? A/V Material Podcasts iTunesU BBC DBLP
6. Why is it important? The OU has been the first University to expose its data as linked data: http://data.open.ac.uk Now widely recognized as a critical step forward for the HE sector in the UK (and worldwide) Favor transparency and reuse of data, both externally and internally Reduces cost of dealing with our own public data: integration and reuse by design Enable both new kinds of applications, and to make the ones that are already feasible more cost effective At least 3 other UK universities have now followed our example: http://data.online.lincoln.ac.uk/, http://data.ox.ac.uk/, http://data.southampton.ac.uk/ And others in other countries are setting up similar initiatives

24. Example application: Expert Search using publication information and connecting to contact information within the OU
25. Example application: Explore Information about a person in the “Reading Experience Database” based on data provided by DBPedia (Linked Data version of Wikipedia) New ways to look at humanities research data
26. Lessons Learnt The major part of the work is not technical Linked data is simple! Identifying available data, obtaining access to them, re-modeling them is hard Making people understand that it is worth doing is critical Especially when dealing with challenges such as data licenses, private data, etc. Get people involved (it is not about you, or the technology) A lot of people’s job (administrators, managers, researchers) is all about collecting and managing data A lot of this effort is lost because of closed systems, lack of integration and exposure of the data Our job is to demonstrate to these people how the principles of linked data can be used to leverage this effort Without being disruptive (e.g., the URI of a course in a browser redirects to the course webpage on the OU website
27. Lessons Learnt There is no killer app The direct benefit of linked data is not in a great big smart application, it is in the many small things that are made easier Need to make it easy for developers to get into it, play with it, see the potential by themselves Integrating the benefits of linked data in the university’s practices/workflows takes time. It is not a threatening big change, but a slow, incremental adoption Plan for long term = need for endorsement We work with the assumption that, soon, it will be as common and necessary for a University to have a linked data platform as it is to have a website So a linked data initiative at a university cannot be a one time thing. Courses evolve, new material appear, new datasets are made available. (e.g., data.open.ac.uk is updated every day) It needs to become part of the University’s role and be endorsed by the departments involved (IT, communication, education, research, business) It does not always work Some applications might be incompatible with the University’s policies (e.g., Google rich snippet showing the price of a course) Support might only get up to a certain point
28. The future From nice demonstrators to real semantic web applications Use of reasoning and data mining for data consolidation and analysis Need proper frameworks for application developers! Linked data and the Semantic Web to support research Not only research communities Identifying new research questions and collecting evidence through connected datasets It is not about individual Universities! Universities sharing data to benefit students and researchers: the higher education’s web of linked data Needs collective vocabularies, recipes, approaches, classifications… the GoodRelations of higher education?

Editor's Notes
Usual pitch: - data on the web = every piece of data is web addressable, so data across different places/stores/systems become linkable: the Web = 1 data space
