What did you
observe in the
video?
As a student, have you
ever been in a situation
where you are asked to
give an answer to a
question?
Have you ever been in a
situation where you
couldn't answer a
question or stuttered
while giving your
answer?
As a student, Why do
you think is it
important to develop
self-confidence?
Do you have to keep
being shy and holding
back when your
teachers ask you
questions?
MELC 3: Give expanded definitions
of words. (EN10V-IIIi13.9:)
 Identify expanded definition
techniques used.
 Use expanded definition
techniques in paragraphs.
Objectives:
 Recognize the significance of
techniques for expanding definitions
of words by incorporating them into
community-based settings.
The class will be grouped into
three.
Three paragraphs are posted on
the board. Each group will also
receive a copy of the paragraph
with the processing questions
indicated. Each group must read,
understand, and analyze the
paragraph assigned to them.
Then, for each, give your
observations. Each group will only
be given three minutes to discuss.
Expanding
Definition by
Giving an Example
It helps you illustrate and
describe by providing clear,
specific, extra facts or
information to the word and
clarify an abstract and formless
concept.
You can use these signals for
concrete examples: for example,
for instance, such as, similar to,
specifically, to illustrate, much
like, in the same way as.
Which of the three
paragraphs is expanding
definition by giving an
example?
What can you say about the
paragraph?
What examples were
mentioned?
Can you name other hotels in
our city?
What word signal did the
paragraph use to give
examples?
Expanding
Definition by
Describing a
Process
It gives a series of instructions to
make or produce something. It
joins with the use of linking verbs
and common signals such as and,
then, and then, before, during,
finally, first, lastly, today, since,
and immediately.
Which of the three describes
a process?
What does it talk about?
How many instructions or
processes did the paragraph
mention?
Can you name those
instructions or processes in
order to reach the beautiful
Tarangban Falls?
What word signal did the
paragraph use to show
process?
Expanding
Definition by
Comparing and
Contrasting
It shows how the subject is like
/unlike or how the topic differs or
is similar from others in the same
class. They are used to explain
two subjects and help you decide
between two options.
With the signal words: also,
although and, as well as, better,
bigger than, but, compared with,
different from, either however,
on the other hand, similar to,
while, and yet.
What does the paragraph tell
us?
What do you think are the
similarities and differences
between the two festivals?
What word signal did the
paragraph use to compare
and contrast?
Calbayog City is composed of
three districts. One of them is
Oquendo district. There are
barangays under Oquendo district
such as…
As a student, I can help my
school and my community care
for the environment by dong the
following: first, …
Brgy. Mawacat and Brgy.
Cagbilwang similarly belong to
Oquendo district. The former is
celebrating its fiesta every… in
honor of....
It’s different from Brgy.
Cagbilwang because…
ACTIVITY TIME!
You’re lucky to
have chosen.
In a definition essay about
“kindness”, for example, you could
write about an act of kindness you
recently witnessed.
Someone who mows the lawn of an
elderly neighbor is a valid example,
just as someone who gave you an
encouraging word when you were
feeling down.
Expanding Definition by
Giving an Example
Many people have never heard of
the term “confrere,” for instance.
One basic definition is “a fellow
member of a profession, fraternity,
etc.” As such, you could compare
“confrere” with “colleague,” which is
a similar yet more familiar concept.
Expanding Definition by
Comparing and Contrasting
You have to beat first the eggs
then pour them into the pan. Turn
the heat down and use your fork
to mix slowly. And then just put
a knife underneath and flip
the omelet over.
Expanding Definition by
Describing a Process
The class will be divided into three
groups. First group will be named
as “The Givers”, the second “The
Describers”, and the third “The
Compare-and-Contrast
Explainers”.
You will be asked to give an
expanded definition of the word/s
by using the technique of
expanding definition assigned to
you. You have the freedom to
choose which group you want to
be a part of.
You will only have 5 minutes to
brainstorm and prepare your
answer. You can use your
cellphone in searching through
Google or any other reliable search
engine. Each team will then be
given 2 minutes to present.
The Givers: You have to work on
providing an expanded definition
of “Bullying inside the School” by
giving an example through
presenting a tableau in class and
having someone explain it.
The Describers: You have to
work on giving an expanded
definition of "Fighting Fake News”
by describing a process through
presenting a 2-minute talk show.
The Compare-and-Contrast
Explainers: You have to work on
giving an expanded definition of
"Good Friend vs. Fake Friend" by
comparing and contrasting through
acting it out as if you were
answering a question in a pageant.

What techniques
for expanding
definitions of
words did we
discuss earlier?
Why is it important
to know these
techniques?
DIRECTIONS: Identify whether
the definition is an expanded
definition by giving an example,
comparing and contrasting, and
describing a process.
Write GE for Giving an Example,
CC for Comparing and Contrasting,
and DP for Describing a Process.
Write your answer for each item
on the space provided.
1. Generation Z people can be
the young TikTok users, young
vloggers, and young social media
influencers.
GE
2. Whales differ from fish in a
variety of ways. Whales have hair,
give birth to live young, and
breathe air. Fish, on the other
hand, lay eggs, have scales, and
breathe in water. However, they
both live in water, have fins, and
can swim.
CC
3. Flowers are something I
adore. The color of a rose makes
me feel loved. The beauty of an
orchid makes me feel lovely. The
carnation flower brings me closer
to God.
GE
4. Spring weather in Vancouver
is similar to spring weather in
Halifax; however, winter in Halifax
is much colder.
CC
5. Leaders must take on
important roles to play. First, set
the goals. Second, get organized.
Third, take the lead. Fourth, work
together with other members.
Fifth, motivate and direct. Sixth,
develop policies to ensure the
organization's smooth functioning.
DP
Assignment
DIRECTIONS: Recall the three
techniques to expand definition of
words then supply the needed
ideas to complete the prompt.
Write your answer for each item
on a 1 whole sheet of paper. Each
item is equivalent to five points.
I realized that in life, successful
learners…
1. Definition by Example
2. Definition by Comparison and
Contrast
3. Definition by Process
