Inside the
manic race
to replace
Duterte as
the Philippines’
leader
A diverse field of candidates have put up their
hands to succeed Philippines President Rodrigo
Duterte, who is stepping down after a single
six-year term in line with the Philippines
constitution.
Although the 2022 presidential election
campaign is yet to begin, the machinations and
drama are well underway.
Richard Heydarian, professor of history and
political science at the Philippines' Polytechnic
University, says there is no clear frontrunner.
"It is going to be highly, highly competitive," he
added. In a tight race, the prize could go to
anyone. And the stakes are high.
At home, Duterte has cracked down on civil society and
sparked a bloody war on drugs that has claimed the lives of
more than 6,000 people, according to police. And there are
signs he may not be willing to let his influence go so easily.
Whoever ends up taking power in the Philippines, Ressa
said they will inherit a country "in a far worse place" than
Duterte did. "The legacy of Duterte is the breakdown of the
different branches of government and the corruption of the
different weak institutions," she said.
"We were just at the point where our institutions
were starting to solidify ... the last five years have
really taken those dreams and dashed them."

Are you aware of the Presidential elections on the
year 2022?
What did Heydarian say about Duterte?
How about Resa’s opinion?
Examples:
Duterte is better than Pnoy.
Vanilla ice cream is the best!
is a point of view or judgement formed about something that is not
necessarily founded on facts or knowledge. Opinions cannot be proven
as true or false.
 somehow similar to an opinion
is made when a person’s strong belief is
invested in making a statement.
Regardless if it is true or not, an assertion leads
to the feeling that people should not go against
what they read or hear, but rather accept that
the idea or notion is an “inarguable fact”.
TYPES
OF
Straight forward and clear statements for expressing
feelings, opinions, and beliefs.
Example: In the midst of an argument with her friend,
Shiela blurted out “I am so mad at you right now!”
Express sympathy to someone and usually consist of
two parts: the first is a statement that acknowledges
the other person’s feelings or situations, and the
second is a statement that expresses support for the
other person’s viewpoint, feelings, or rights.
Example: He experienced bullying throughout his high
school life yet he turned to be kind and helpful
towards others.
happens when someone is unable to respond to a
person’s basic assertions, as a result, the person
becomes adamant about their resolve/demand.
Example: I you don’t complete your projects this
Friday, I will be forced to give you a lower grade.
use the first noun “I” and are good for expressing
negative emotions. Nonetheless, it emphasizes a
person’s anger in a constructive way.
Example: I feel that you are not being fair to me.
Writers use any assertion in
expressing their personal feelings,
beliefs, and ideas directly. This
technique will enable them to defend
what others feel, especially if their
rights are being violated.
Sample Assertion in Literature:
You’re as good as anybody else
You’ve got a place here too
What is the
importance of
an opinion in
our lives?
How about the

an assertion in
our lives?
Can you still
remember
what Heydarian
and Ressa said?

sometimes helps us
give a firm answer to
people. It will also
make people see our
point of view.
