This documentary analyzes the film "Executed" which examines capital punishment. It uses a mix of documentary techniques including a voiceover, interviews, and archive footage. The themes it explores are death, crime, justice, injustice, and capital punishment. The interviews are shot in a conventional style and the settings are relevant to the interview subjects. Gloomy lighting and somber music fit the dark themes. Graphics and archive footage are also used to inform the audience about the people and events discussed.
2. Type of documentary
This documentary contains a voiceover throughout,
it contains several interviews and it also shows
archive footage at several points.
Therefore Executed is a MIXED documentary.
It is a single stranded documentary as all of the
themes link and relate to each other. As well as this
Executed is a closed documentary as all topics have
been discussed and shown fully by the end.
3. Themes
Executed contains several themes that all link
together these being:
○ Death
○ Crime
○ Justice
○ Injustice
○ Capital Punishment
4. Camerawork
The interviews shown in the documentary are
conventional as they are inline with the rule of
thirds. This means that direct mode of address is
not present as the interviewee is not looking
directly at the camera.
They are also shot in close
up or medium close up
camera shots.
5. Mise-en-Scene
Setting- The settings and backgrounds used for
the interviews are relevant and appropriate to
the interviewee.
For example the houses of the families of those
executed.
6. Mise-en-Scene
Lighting- The lighting during a lot of the
documentary was fitting with the themes as it
was gloomy.
7. Sound
There is non-diegetic sound throughout the
documentary in the form of music.
The music played is fitting with the themes and
topics as it is slow, dark and gloomy, all of which fit
with the scenes being shown.
Editing
There are simple cuts used within the documentary
to transition between shots.
8. Graphics
Graphics are used quite
a bit throughout
Executed, however they
are used in the same
format and for the same purpose.
The first way they are used is for the title screen,
which is shown at the start of the documentary and
then again at the beginning and end of each advert
break.
9. Graphics
Another way graphics are used is to show the
names against the images of those who were
executed, this helps inform the audience.
The final way graphics are
used in Executed is by
showing text explaining the
names and relevance of the
interviewees, again this
helps to inform the
audience.
10. Archive Footage
There is quite a lot of archive footage used within
the documentary Executed. Old photographs of
those that were executed or involved are shown,
footage from protests against capital punishment is
shown and video footage of police officers receiving
awards to do with those being executed is also
shown.
