Teaser trailers are short previews released months before a film to generate anticipation, revealing brief snippets without much plot. Theatrical trailers are full-length previews released closer to the film, running 2-5 minutes and providing more details about the story and exact release date. Teaser trailers are under 2 minutes and focus on exploiting famous actors/directors to attract interest without fully explaining the narrative, whereas theatrical trailers are longer and more heavily edited to convey the plot.
1. What is the difference between a teaser trailer and a theatrical trailer?
2. A teaser trailer is a short trailer that is often used to help to advertise an upcoming film or other media form. It can be released months before the due date of the official film to help create anticipation and interest from the target audience. A theatrical trailer is a much more in depth well revised longer trailer which tells us more about the plot of the film and gives us exact dates when it will be out.
3. A teaser trailer is a lot shorter compared to a theatrical trailer. The teaser trailer’s main purpose is to “tease” the audience with short snippets from the movie and by not revealing too much of the plot. A teaser trailer is normally under two minutes whereas a theatrical trailer is usually much more than this; sometimes up to four or five minutes.
4. Distinctive features of a teaser trailer are: The length of the trailer which is usually under two minutes. In teaser trailers the producer and actors/actresses are exploited to create interest from the audience. E.g. A famous actor such as Johnny Depp would instantly get audience interest due to his wide variety of films. When the film is going to be out e.g. “ This spring” whereas in a theatrical trailer we usually get told it will be out in a month such as “August”.
5. Example of teaser trailers and theatrical trailers “ 127 hours” teaser trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba1IhHAqLgw&feature=fvsr “127 hours” theatrical trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlhLOWTnVoQ The length of the teaser trailer is a lot shorter than the official trailer; the teaser being 1 minute 47 seconds whereas the theatrical trailer is 2 minutes 41. At the beginning of the teaser trailer we are instantly being exploited the directors name and what his previous works include whereas by the time we see the official trailer we already know so they have not included this at the beginning. The theatrical trailer is much more heavily edited with voice over’s and inter titles whereas the teaser trailer does not contain all these things. We can relate to the main protagonist in this film by watching the theatrical trailer as it reveals more of the plot than the teaser trailer.
