The Ethics Of Cigarette Smoking In The United States
The United States of America is a country who wants the best for its people. For centuries we
have been a melting pot of immigrants and people have come here to pursue a better life.
America cares for its citizens and looks out for their best interests. One of the many ways this is
done is by the banning of harmful substances. When something is deemed overly harmful we ban
it to stop our citizens from using it and therefore protect them. This is done when drugs such as
LSD are banned or firearms without a proper permit are not permitted. One substance this is not
done with is tobacco. Tobacco is harmful and causes death. Cigarettesmoking is responsible for
over 400,000 deaths a year in the United States. There are no benefits to smoking tobacco,... Show

First of all, then and now many people are addicted to cigarettes and dismantling the industry
would not have completely ended the sale of cigarettes in the United States. Surely, some sort of
bootleg cigarette industry would have taken off. Nonetheless, with the dismantling of the
industry cigarette advertising would no longer be a thing. Without advertising, less and less
people would have taken up the habit, therefore saving lives. Also, due to the illegality of
cigarettes sales prices would have skyrocketed in the black market for them. Due to the
increased costs and difficulty of getting cigarettes, again, more people would have quit the habit.
As far as the economy is concerned, ending cigarette sales would have had negative effects.
However, we would have bounced back. New innovations would have taken off and all would
have eventually been fine. Saving the lives of millions of people would have been worth a
couple of years of economic trouble. Also, speaking of the economy, it would have been easier to
be done in 1964 because it was in later years that cigarette companies diversified and had their
hands in many aspects of everyday American

Imagery In The Stranger
In The Stranger the journal topic I will be using is imagery. On page 55 the sentence that is a
key example of imagery in the book says We walked on the beach for a long time. By now the
sun was overpowering. It shattered into little pieces on the sand and water. Meursault is using a
good way of imagery because he is making a visually descriptive language, which is imagery. He is
making the sunhave actual human features by saying the sun shattered into little pieces. As we all
know the sun does not actually shatter he was just saying that because it was so bright out. He
used this imagery when he was walking on the beach with Raymond, when they saw a couple of
Arabs on the beach. Meursault never really had a friend like Raymond so he never

Family Therapy
Introduction
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy employed to assist members of a family in improving
communication systems, conflict resolution, and to help the family to deal with certain problems
that manifest in the behavior of members. In most cases, deviance in a family member is an
indication of underlying family dysfunctions. This paper looks the counselling procedure that can
be applied to help the Kline family solve their problems. It answers certain questions including
those of the expected challenges during therapy and ways of dealing with the challenges.

The counselor will ask questions to clarify and summarize the family s concerns. I will answer any
questions and address any concerns raised by the family about the therapy process. I will also assist
in laying down parental authority and a sense of impartiality among the children. This will reinstate
equilibrium in the family and motivate all members to participate in the therapy.
Each family member will be taught on the importance of listening to the issues raised other
members of the family. This will lay down the foundation for the future sessions. I will also coach
the members of the Kline household on how to provide suitable feedback on issues raised by other
family members. The session shall also entail a discussion of the expectations of each family
member. It is a good point to begin instructing the family on the necessary required in order for
those changes to be achieved.

Resistance of certain clients to group therapy is among the many challenges that therapists
commonly face. George seeks to detach himself from the problem and sees his role in the family as

Essay on The Sonnet Genre Combining with Figurative Language
The Sonnet Genre Combining with Figurative Language
Compare how the conventions of the sonnet genre combine with figurative language to create
meaning in at least two texts.
Originating in Italy, the sonnet was established by Petrarch in the 14th century as a major form of
love poetry, and came to be adopted in
England in the 16th century (Oxford Literary terms). Overtime there have been different types of
sonnets written, for example the Italian
(Petrarchan) sonnet, the English (Shakespearean) sonnet and the
Spenserian sonnet. Each of these sonnets have there own conventions and use different types of
poetic language to help create meaning for the reader. For the purpose of this essay we will look at
how the conventions of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A typical rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet would be that of
ABABCDCDEFEFGG. Spenserian sonnets combine both the Shakespearean and
Italian forms. Just like the Shakespearean form it uses 3 quatrains followed by a couplet. However
the rhyme scheme is like the Italian, linking all stanzas together ABABBCBCCDCDEE. An
essential element of all three types of sonnets is that of the volta which is used to signify a change
in subject matter, for example in the Italian form the volta normally occurs at the ninth line. The
two sonnets I will be examining within this essay predominantly use the conventions of a
Shakespearean sonnet.
When exploring the conventions of Sonnet 18 we can see it has the typical conventions of a
Shakespearean sonnet using three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. The first quatrain establishes
the theme of comparing the speaker s beloved with a summer s day, and why it is difficult to do
so. The whole of sonnet 18 is used as an extended metaphor, and this is seen from the very
beginning:
Shall I compare thee to a summers day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate (1 2)
The sonnet begins with a metaphoric question, asking if the speaker should compare this person
with summer. The speaker then answers by saying she is more lovely and more temperate this
combines with the meaning created by the first quatrain immediately giving the reader an idea that
the speaker feels his beloved

Essay about Mexico City
Mexico City
Like an enormous living museum, Mexico City provides an extraordinary showplace for the
thousands of years of human cultural achievement that Mexico has attained. It ranks as one of the
world s great capitals and is a must for anyone craving to understand Mexico s complex past, its fast
paced present, and its ever challenging future. The size and grandeur of the city are staggering. It is
not only the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere, but, by some accounts,
has also become the largest city in the world. Before we look at present day Mexico City, let us look
into it deep and storied past.

Many buildings and streets were constructed, and it served as cultural and social center of North
and South America. When 1810 came, however, a Mexican Independence movement, started by
Miguel Hidalgo, caused Mexican peasants to fight against the Spanish government. After 11 years,
the fight was successful, and Mexico declared its independence.
Mexico City was the center of many more conflicts in Mexican history. In 1847, the city was
captured by U.S. forces under Winfield Scott to end the Mexican American War. The price for
Mexico was the loss of the land that is now most of the southern U.S. In 1863, the city was
captured again, but this time by French forces, upset that Mexico refused to pay its debt to France
on time. The French controlled the city for a year until Mexican forces retook it in 1864.
Over the next 30 years, Mexico City really began to thrive. Under Porfirio Diaz, more roads and
telegraph lines were constructed. Rail lines into the U.S. and other provinces of Mexico were built,
and foreign investment greatly increased, as well. In 1910, Mexico City had grown to a population
of 471,000. The following 10 years saw all of Mexico in a state of disarray as a revolution was
taking place.
During the 1920 s, many young artists, suck as Diego Rivera, David Alfonso Siqueiros, and Jose

Advertising Effect Of A Firm On The Sales Of Brand
Clarke (1973) defined advertising competition as follows: Brand A will be said to compete with
Brand B through advertising if a change in the advertising of Brand A is associated with a change
in the sales of Brand B (p. 251). Since competition among firms is a frequent scenario in most
markets, discovering how firms react when their counterparts attack with promotions and
advertising has been an issue extensively studied. Furthermore, Little (1979) recognized competitive
advertising as an element to consider when building dynamic market response models.
This section reviews studies that addressed the problem of determining the advertising effect of a
firm on the sales of its competitors, based on the model used to describe the dynamics of the
advertising sales relationship.
By coalescing differential games and econometric analyses, Chintagunta and Vilcassim (1992)
determined open loop and closed loop advertising strategies in a duopoly where the dynamics of
the advertising sales relationship followed the Lanchester model. The authors illustrated their
approach with market share and advertising spending data for Coke and Pepsi between 1968 and
1981 when the Cola War took place.
After estimating the Lanchester model, the authors found that, in the case of Coke, closed loop
Nash equilibrium for paid for advertising efforts were closer to actual advertising than open loop
Nash equilibrium due to the former took market share dynamics into account, whereas open loop

The Howard government s difficulty in rebuilding the relationship with Indonesia was partly due to
their megaphone diplomacy (Capling 2008: 613). Howard s rhetoric after election in 1997, moved
away from Labour s enthusiastic engagement with Asia, and towards a perception of an Australia
less interdependent with Asia, emphasizing Western liberal democratic ties (Jones and Benvenuti

Australia and Indonesia increased their joint military exercises to ten in 1998 1999, beofre they
were cancelled following the East Timor crisis (Singh 2002: 126). Also, clearly linked to the
crisis, was the 16th September 1999 abrogation by the Indonesian government of the AMS
(Commonwealth of Australia 2000: 195). The October 2002 terrorist bombing attack in Bali,
killing 202 people including 88 Australians was a turning point. Based on pragmatism and shared
interest in combatting terrorism the relationship reemerged when the Australian Federal Police and
the Indonesian authorities cooperated in investigation the incident (Day 2015: 676) Building close
security relations became a priority in light of the new terrorism threat, creating the successful
Bali Process (Day 2015: 676). 2013 finally saw the return of military engagement to pre East Timor
crisis heights (Robert and Hadir 2015: 198).
However, the domestic sphere is vital to Australian policy and must be engaged to improve
relations with Indonesia. A 2013 survey of the Australian public commissioned by DFAT in 2013
found that 53% of Australian believe Indonesia is not a democracy and 54% believe Australia is
right to worry about Indonesia as a military threat (Roberts and Habir 2015: 205). This is worrying
as domestic support does effect on Australian foreign policy (Stephens and Gruber 2010: 38)
Australian generosity, diplomacy and funding have been the most successful method of deepening

The Effect Of Ocean Acidification On The Rates Of Calcium...
INTRODUCTION/ABSTRACT For the past 200 years, the rapid increase in atmospheric CO2
continues to be produced by, the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrialization, cement
production, and other land use changes. The ocean absorbs much of this excess CO2 through air
sea gas exchange, resulting in changes in seawater chemistry. Due to human made emissions, the
CO2 content of the oceans has dramatically increased and is gradually acidifying the surface
waters. As a result of human made emissions, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and oceans
has increased dramatically during recent decades. In the ocean, the accumulating CO2 is
gradually acidifying the surface waters, making it difficult for shelled organisms such as corals
and certain open sea plankton to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. Since this process affects
the functioning of several marine ecosystems, it has been massively studied in recent years.
However, getting an accurate measure is complicated because the effect of ocean acidification on
the rates of calcium produced by marine organisms is extremely variable and its species specific.
Since scientists incline to use local and site specific field measurements, treating reef environments
and open sea environments separately, their measurements reflect the local response of individual
organisms to elevated CO2 levels, leaving out the overall picture. RESEARCH Increasing
concentrations of CO2 in the world s oceans has resulted with serious

unavoidable, and happened to everyone. Once again Siddhartha asked his charioteer to take him

Brown Patch In Turfgrass Essay
Brown Patch in Turfgrass
Introduction
Brown patch, Rhizoctonia solani, is a plant disease that can have a major affect on both golf
courses and home turfgrass alike (Brown Patch, 2014). This fungal disease is most prevalent
during the height of the summer months, when heat and humidity levels are at their highest. The
grass species that are most susceptible make up the majority of cool season grasses, to include
perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and the bentgrasses (Tredway et al, 2011). Occasionally, brown
patch becomes a problem on Kentucky bluegrasses in mid to late summer (Tredway et al, 2011).
The Pathogen The pathogen that causes the Brown patch disease is among the Rhizoctonia species,
more specifically Rhizoctonia solani, according to the American Phytopathological Society

Turfgrass diseases are no different. One of the major cultural practices that can be modified to
effectively reduce disease severity is a balanced fertilization program. It has long been stated in
literature and professional circles that excessive N fertilization on turfgrass can dramatically
increase R. solani susceptibility. The reasoning behind this is due to the fact that N, applied at
high rates and/or at a less than optimum time of season can cause succulent turf growth. This can
increase disease incidence because turf is vigorously growing, and with higher N levels, stomata
will be slower to close (Carrow et al, 2001). Then, as conditions become favorable the fungus
hyphae infiltrate the grass plant via the stomata in the leaf blades, and because they are slower to
close, the disease has a great chance to infect the plant (Rhizoctonia Diseases of Turfgrass,

Smallpox is one of the most lethal virus known to man. It is devastating to individual systems, and
it s high level of contagion makes it a major threat to populations, as seen historically, before mass
vaccination was available. For many years before an understanding about the virus was developed,
thousands suffered and died from it, with no relief except perhaps that of a comforting nurse. As
scientific inquiry advanced, so did the approach to dealing with the virus, beginning with its
primitive inoculation, to it s eradication from the natural environment. In recent years, the study of
the virus has lead to harnessing it in the laboratory with the constant threat of biological warfare.

Differences Between King Camarus And Merlin
I wonder what the scene between the King, Camarus, and Merlin is insinuating. I am very
confused as to why the King would call his grandson to his quarters only to banish him as soon as
he saw his face. I have been pondering the reason behind this and have come up with a few
possibilities.
The first possibility I have come up with is that he could have wanted to introduce the foreign King
to Merlin. Rumors were spreading that Niniane was betrothed to the foreign king, so it is very
possible that he wanted to see what she would be bringing into the marriage.
The King may have simply wanted to know what Merlin was up to, seeing as he sits on the wall
everyday watching visitors arrive. The foreign King could ve reported seeing the boy on the wall,

technology, architecture, medicine and travel were among these changes as well as the growing

haunted , spectral and subterranean are piled on the reader to create a sense of fear, vulnerability
and death.
Next is The Signalman by Charles Dickens, which is about a visit from a ghost. The setting for this
story is very old, depressing, dingy and gloomy but the scenery around the signalman isn t
reflected in his personality. His box is located underground next to the railway line. Straight
away the setting seems to be weird as it s descending down, as if almost entering hell, zigzag
path descending down . I think this because most nice stairways are straight and go up, not
uneven. The writer also describes the place as a great dungeon ; this says to me that it s a place
of death and torture because those are the words I would think of when dungeon is mentioned.
Also it says there was a gloomy red light, and the gloomier entrance to a black, in whose massive

The Prince And Discourse On Livy
In his famous works, The Prince and Discourse on Livy, Machiavelli meticulously discusses the
importance of religion in the formation and maintaining a political order. Machiavelli regards
religion as a political tool used by political elites for political purposes. He argues that the
appearance of religionis good while the practice of it is harmful. One of the memorable passage
from the Prince that supports Machiavelli s claim is when he advices the prince to not to be
good, and the prince should cultivate the appearance of the religion if he wants to maintain his
state. The prince, he writes, should appear all mercy, all faith, all honesty, all human, all religion
he adds and nothing is more necessary to have than this last quality (The Prince, 70). Here,
Machiavelli argues, in order for the prince to maintain his state, it is necessary for the prince to go
to the source of morality and by this he means religion. Thus, Machiavelli view on religion is
nothing but a necessary tool for maintaining a political authority.
Furthermore, Machiavelli stresses the importance of the religion as a political mean to control
and govern the masses. In the Discourse on Livy, Machiavelli uses the example of how Numa the
founder of Roman religion, manipulates the Roman people by using religion to maintain order and
peace. Machiavelli praises the wisdom of Numa for inventing a religion to control a very ferocious

Essay about Improving Israel-Palestinian Communication
The Israel Palestinian conflict is a part of the greater Arab Israeli long running conflict in the
Middle East. The main point of this conflict is the existence of the state of Israel and its relations
with
Arab states and with the Palestinian population in the area. Since the establishment of Israel, the
Palestinians and the Jews have been fighting over the land for several years. Both believe that they
have greater claim than the other. Even though, these two races share a variety of customs, beliefs
and practices, there are enough differences that make these two clash. Even the similarities between
these two have been the source of conflict for thousands of years.

between these two sides. There was also numerous Israeli Palestinian dialogue events conducted
each year targeting at grassroots population from both sides. These transformative dialogues was
aimed at creating cultural harmony and mutual understanding between these two reducing prejudice
and hostility. According to Ellias, the reason behind continuous failure of the dialogues between
Israeli Jewish and Palestinian could be the differences in their cultural norms and values and their
speech codes emerged from their history. An Arab speaker who is engaging in his speech code
called musayara is polite, indirect, courteous, and nonconfrontive to the other member of a
conversation, whereas the speech code of Jewish is found sharp contrasting to that of Arabs. The
communication code of Jewish is termed as dugri which means straight talk. Jews who is engaging

culturally distinctive and the meaning and significance of messages lies on codes, it is very
important for those who engaged in the dialogues to understand and predict each other during any
intercultural communication or dialogue. Otherwise, it may lead to misunderstanding and

1. Is this a good property for Laflin to acquire?
NPV
From Exhibit 4 the NPV is about $1.5 million. There initial investment is $400,000. Without
included debt payments this appears attractive. However, the NPV should include the debt
payments for a useful NPV. This reduces the NPV significantly. The investors double their money
and the investment appears viable.

At a price of $18.80 per square foot ($1,500,000/80,000 square feet), the deal seems in line with

However this should be compared to other investments.
3. What price should Laflin offer? What conditions should be attached to his offer? How might
Lonestar try to justify a higher price? What might Southpark IV be worth in five years?
Laflin should offer a price less than the $1,500,000. With existing market conditions it does not
offer a great enough return. Using my recalculated numbers, a $1,000,000 asking price would
offer $600k of NPV. A $1.5 million asking price leaves only $100k.
Lonestar could justify a higher price by indicating the glut of new supply in the Houston market.
Vacancy rates are falling and there appears to be no additions of new supply, therefore occupancy
rates should raise and rents as well.
According to the calculation of Laflin in year five, NOI is $216,784. At a 10% cap rate the
property is worth $2,167,840. My adjusted calculation yields a valuation

Introduction When returning back to teaching I think it s important for me to understand the major
factors that affect reading vocabulary levels. Researching this topic will prepare me in becoming a
better English teacher. Exploring these various affects will allow me to become more conscious
and prepared when it comes to helping my students with vocabulary and reading comprehension
skills. When entering the classroom every child is different so it s important to understand
diversity in the classroom. Wright states, Right from the beginning of schooling, there are profound
differences in vocabulary knowledge among young learners from different socioeconomic groups.
Just consider the following statistics: by age 4, a child interaction with his or family has already
produced significant vocabulary differences across socioeconomic lines, differences so dramatic
that they represent a 30 million word catastrophe Furthermore, this paper will explore three major
factors that affects reading vocabulary levels, home environment, school experiences, and child s
ability to make connection during reading. Literature Review When researching effects of reading

Communism was one of the political theories founded by Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx in the

Why Cats Are Better Pets Than Dogs
Whether it is an inside cuddle buddy, or an outside mice killer, cats make wonderful pets. While
dogs stay dirty, drool, and bark, cats clean themselves, are clean animals, and meow quietly. Cats
are warm and fuzzy and love to cuddle while they take naps. Dogs are too rambunctious and
energetic. Cats make better pets than dogs.
Dogs can be good for people who are adventurous and outgoing. On the other hand, they are not
good for busy people, or people with jobs. Dogs have to get their energy out for them to be calm
and collected if they are inside dogs. If the dog is not an outside dog, then they have to run outside
and get exercise everyday. If a dog does not get their energy out they will most likely tear things up
in the house or run around

The Consequences Of Soil Diversity
The human population is projected to reach 10 billion by 2050. This growth will demand almost
twice of currently globally produced agricultural products. However, long periods of intensive
agriculture have resulted in soil nutrient depletion, salinity accumulation, and acidification of
agricultural soils, resulting in an overall reduction of the soils ability to support a growing
population (Godfray et al., 2010; Smith et al., 2013, Tillman et al 2011, Ray et al 2013). Despite
the fact that soil is one of the mankind s most essential and threatened resources, supporting food

Grant undoubtedly fears having to take the entire scope of racism on his shoulders alone, knowing
that a fatal collapse would be the result. Grant fiercely displays his anguish in a conversation with
his Aunt:
Everything you sent me to school for, you re stripping me of it, I told my aunt. They were looking
at the fire, and I stood behind them with the bag of food. The humiliation I had to go through, going
in that man s kitchen. The hours I had to wait while they ate and drank and socialized before they
would even see me. Now going up to that jail. To watch them put their dirty hands on that food. To
search my body each time as if I m some kind of common criminal. Maybe today they ll want to
look into my mouth, or my nostrils, or make me strip. Anything to humiliate me. All the things you
wanted me to escape by going to school. (79)
During his emotional spill, Grant resorts to the maniacal thought that his aunt has something to do
with the racism he experiences. Ironically, it is the seemingly racist words of Jefferson s defense
attorney that fuels the spectrum of the novel, and the eventual salvation of both Jefferson and Grant.
A chief theme of the novel is commented upon by Grant himself. During a memorable speech given
to Vivian, he adamantly explains that a vicious cycle of male abandonment has taken place in

reserves and under the VEP would return as much as $10 billion of this cash to shareholders. In
exchange for each share currently held, the plan would give stockholders one new share plus the
choice of receiving $20 in either cash or additional new Ford common shares. Shareholders electing

for different kinds of Shareholders:

Value Enhancement Plan has tax consequences. Those shareholders electing to receive the new
shares of Ford instead of the 20 buck bonus will not be directly affected by the tax. The new

Those shareholders choosing to collect the $20 cash per share will have to pay capital gains tax

The Transit Agreement Between Bangladesh And India Essay
Transit is generally the making of mutually beneficial arrangements for the use of waterways, roads
and railways for bilateral trade and passage of goods between two countries or two places in one

in the world give transit to others for economic and political development and some countries like

Mood Of The Tell Tale Heart

Illegal Off Label Promotion Is Personal Choice Of Actions

alcohol. The movement was mostly women whose husbands had uncontrolled drinking habits.
Alcohol was also being blamed for health issues like anemia, cancer, high blood pressure and

abnormally low count of red blood cells. This can trigger tiredness and cause someone to become

converts alcohol into acetaldehyde (a potent carcinogen). Having high blood pressure can lead to
kidney and heart disease. Alcoholic neuropathy is the form of nerve damage alcohol

The Republic of Kenya, an East African country that lies on the equator within the Indian Ocean

(2002)). While these conversations are meaningful, the setting might shy away some fans and can
definitely lead to an awkward situation if guests show up at the wrong moment. Language is
restrained, and while the entire show is certainly not a kids film, the adult themes present well
throughout the show.

Some of the banter from the two of them is pretty humorous on the subject, but rest assured every
episode includes some sort of delusional rant by the Lecherous man.
Maki Knights, a loveable Alchemist, and the Slow Cooking Presentation As it happens, the Maki
Knights serve a loveless entity and are forebidden from hurting humans in their quest to slay the
horrors. The Witch hunt mentioned at the beginning of the show stems from a former Maki
Knight who plotted to use his position to rule over the normal people; pretty standard evil
nemesis. This Maki Knight recruits another Maki Knight, who happens to be [Fathers] friend, and
I felt his arc was a tab bit underdeveloped, particularly since his backstory required so many
flashbacks. Thankfully, there is enough awesomeness in his short arc when he hunts down Leon
and nearly slays him, if not for a beautiful Alchemists named {Alchemist], who affectionately calls
him Boy. I loved the suspensful way she escapes the dreaded black knight and helps the thankless

Allies To Blame For The Injustices In Ww2 Essay
To what extent should the allies share the guilt for the injustices perpetrated during the 1930s and
World War II?
This symposium gave delegates the opportunity to hear and speak on different perspectives of the
influential nations or powers that were major aspects of the World War II. Almost all allied force
delegates denied accusations to take any part of the blame for the injustices perpetrated during this
atrocious time and the events preceding. The Axis forced admitted to their faults, but provided
strong reasoning of why the Allies should share the blame. Allied forces denied accusations to take
full blame or partial blame for the brutality perpetrated throughout this atrocious time and the events
preceding. The Axis seeked the share of oppression and maltreatment of citizens amid the war,
while Allies demanded for the full burden to impose on the Axis, rather than distribution of blame.

Carine Wilson articulated the ideal by utilising the wording of horrible on both sides through the

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR)
Introduction
Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental conditions
through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues. Social responsibility
policy focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve lives and sustain our planet
through contributions to local communities and society at large. In other words, a business should
fully realize it s potential as an organization to make a better world through corporate self regulation
assimilated into a business module.
CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with due admiration
for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social expectations in areas in
which they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous international standards such as the
United Nations Global Compact, companies will reinforce their commitment to human rights. In
1998 the Secretary General of the UN, declared that he was building a more solid relationship with
the business community. Thriving markets and human security goes hand in hand: without one we
will not have the other (Annan,
1998, p. 1820). Afterwards, a World Economic Forum was held in 1999. At the forum,
Kofi Annan introduced what is known the Global Compact . This is the ten principles agreement

  • 2. The Ethics Of Cigarette Smoking In The United States The United States of America is a country who wants the best for its people. For centuries we have been a melting pot of immigrants and people have come here to pursue a better life. America cares for its citizens and looks out for their best interests. One of the many ways this is done is by the banning of harmful substances. When something is deemed overly harmful we ban it to stop our citizens from using it and therefore protect them. This is done when drugs such as LSD are banned or firearms without a proper permit are not permitted. One substance this is not done with is tobacco. Tobacco is harmful and causes death. Cigarettesmoking is responsible for over 400,000 deaths a year in the United States. There are no benefits to smoking tobacco,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, then and now many people are addicted to cigarettes and dismantling the industry would not have completely ended the sale of cigarettes in the United States. Surely, some sort of bootleg cigarette industry would have taken off. Nonetheless, with the dismantling of the industry cigarette advertising would no longer be a thing. Without advertising, less and less people would have taken up the habit, therefore saving lives. Also, due to the illegality of cigarettes sales prices would have skyrocketed in the black market for them. Essay on The Sonnet Genre Combining with Figurative Language The Sonnet Genre Combining with Figurative Language Compare how the conventions of the sonnet genre combine with figurative language to create meaning in at least two texts. Originating in Italy, the sonnet was established by Petrarch in the 14th century as a major form of love poetry, and came to be adopted in England in the 16th century (Oxford Literary terms). Overtime there have been different types of sonnets written, for example the Italian (Petrarchan) sonnet, the English (Shakespearean) sonnet and the Spenserian sonnet. Each of these sonnets have there own conventions and use different types of poetic language to help create meaning for the reader. Spenserian sonnets combine both the Shakespearean and Italian forms. Just like the Shakespearean form it uses 3 quatrains followed by a couplet. However the rhyme scheme is like the Italian, linking all stanzas together ABABBCBCCDCDEE. An essential element of all three types of sonnets is that of the volta which is used to signify a change in subject matter, for example in the Italian form the volta normally occurs at the ninth line. The two sonnets I will be examining within this essay predominantly use the conventions of a Shakespearean sonnet. When exploring the conventions of Sonnet 18 we can see it has the typical conventions of a Shakespearean sonnet using three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. The first quatrain establishes the theme of comparing the speaker s beloved with a summer s day, and why it is difficult to do so. The whole of sonnet 18 is used as an extended metaphor, and this is seen from the very beginning: Shall I compare thee to a summers day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate (1 2) The sonnet begins with a metaphoric question, asking if the speaker should compare this person with summer. The speaker then answers by saying she is more lovely and more temperate this combines with the meaning created by the first quatrain immediately giving the reader an idea that the speaker feels his beloved ... Advertising Effect Of A Firm On The Sales Of Brand Clarke (1973) defined advertising competition as follows: Brand A will be said to compete with Brand B through advertising if a change in the advertising of Brand A is associated with a change in the sales of Brand B (p. 251). Since competition among firms is a frequent scenario in most markets, discovering how firms react when their counterparts attack with promotions and advertising has been an issue extensively studied. Furthermore, Little (1979) recognized competitive advertising as an element to consider when building dynamic market response models. This section reviews studies that addressed the problem of determining the advertising effect of a firm on the sales of its competitors, based on the model used to describe the dynamics of the advertising sales relationship. By coalescing differential games and econometric analyses, Chintagunta and Vilcassim (1992) determined open loop and closed loop advertising strategies in a duopoly where the dynamics of the advertising sales relationship followed the Lanchester model. The authors illustrated their approach with market share and advertising spending data for Coke and Pepsi between 1968 and 1981 when the Cola War took place. • 10. The Effect Of Ocean Acidification On The Rates Of Calcium... INTRODUCTION/ABSTRACT For the past 200 years, the rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 continues to be produced by, the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrialization, cement production, and other land use changes. The ocean absorbs much of this excess CO2 through air sea gas exchange, resulting in changes in seawater chemistry. Due to human made emissions, the CO2 content of the oceans has dramatically increased and is gradually acidifying the surface waters. As a result of human made emissions, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and oceans has increased dramatically during recent decades. In the ocean, the accumulating CO2 is gradually acidifying the surface waters, making it difficult for shelled organisms such as corals and certain open sea plankton to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. Since this process affects the functioning of several marine ecosystems, it has been massively studied in recent years. However, getting an accurate measure is complicated because the effect of ocean acidification on the rates of calcium produced by marine organisms is extremely variable and its species specific. Since scientists incline to use local and site specific field measurements, treating reef environments and open sea environments separately, their measurements reflect the local response of individual organisms to elevated CO2 levels, leaving out the overall picture. Brown Patch In Turfgrass Essay Brown Patch in Turfgrass Introduction Brown patch, Rhizoctonia solani, is a plant disease that can have a major affect on both golf courses and home turfgrass alike (Brown Patch, 2014). The grass species that are most susceptible make up the majority of cool season grasses, to include perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and the bentgrasses (Tredway et al, 2011). One of the major cultural practices that can be modified to effectively reduce disease severity is a balanced fertilization program. It has long been stated in literature and professional circles that excessive N fertilization on turfgrass can dramatically increase R. solani susceptibility. The reasoning behind this is due to the fact that N, applied at high rates and/or at a less than optimum time of season can cause succulent turf growth. This can increase disease incidence because turf is vigorously growing, and with higher N levels, stomata will be slower to close (Carrow et al, 2001). Then, as conditions become favorable the fungus hyphae infiltrate the grass plant via the stomata in the leaf blades, and because they are slower to close, the disease has a great chance to infect the plant (Rhizoctonia Diseases of Turfgrass, ... The Prince And Discourse On Livy In his famous works, The Prince and Discourse on Livy, Machiavelli meticulously discusses the importance of religion in the formation and maintaining a political order. Machiavelli regards religion as a political tool used by political elites for political purposes. He argues that the appearance of religionis good while the practice of it is harmful. One of the memorable passage from the Prince that supports Machiavelli s claim is when he advices the prince to not to be good, and the prince should cultivate the appearance of the religion if he wants to maintain his state. What might Southpark IV be worth in five years? Laflin should offer a price less than the $1,500,000. With existing market conditions it does not offer a great enough return. Using my recalculated numbers, a $1,000,000 asking price would offer $600k of NPV. A $1.5 million asking price leaves only $100k. Lonestar could justify a higher price by indicating the glut of new supply in the Houston market. Vacancy rates are falling and there appears to be no additions of new supply, therefore occupancy rates should raise and rents as well.
