Miles Davis Kind Of Blue Essay
Miles Davis Kind of Blue is the single biggest selling jazz album ever made, selling over 5 million
copies, and was my favorite to learn about. It is known to be one of albums that convert people to
liking jazz styled music, even though it was created over fifty years ago. The most significant part of
the album to me was that it made such an impact on the jazz community and it was only made in
seven hours and all but only one of the tracks were first takes. What has stuck with me in the
documentary was the saying, The first thought is the best thought. I really appreciated this because the
artist stuck with their initial first gut feeling. The music was really innovative and most specifically,
the opening of So What , was completely improvised and then the riff takes off, allowing to be one of
the most iconic songs in jazz (in my opinion). The magic of music was truly created in this album
creation and led a different direction of jazz creation.

Similarities Between Australia And East Asia
Australian and East Asia government were some interesting countries to research government history.
Australia with the historical background of the Aborigine s and East Asia s numerous countries with
bumpy but steady move toward democracy. In this paper, I will compare the Aboriginal and the
countries that have democracies in East Asia .
The history of East Asia goes back as far as 7500 BC in the prehistoric Neolithic period, includes the
days of the empire of China, and disseminates into the present day. East Asia at one time was
considered the nucleus of Authoritarian rule. Recently there have been milestones towards developing
a properly functioning democracy. Japan at one time was considered the only democracy, but in recent
years, South Korea and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A number of other countries in East Asia are showing signs of progressing from dictatorship to form
of democracy, which include Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Additionally the country Burma, is
heading toward democracy for the first time in over twenty years. However, only Japan, Taiwan and
South Korea are seen as stable democracy, with Japan being the lone Asian country that has been
technically liberal and democratic for six decades without disturbance. Citizens do express concerns
about authoritarian rule and most favor the liberal form of democracy with rule of law, freedom of
expression, and judicial independence.
The Aboriginal democracy traces back to the right to vote in Australia, which occurred in the 1800s. In
the beginning, Aborigines were governed by laws from the creative ancestral beings, coming from

Challenger Disaster-Pathos And Logos Healed A Nation
Pathos and Logos Healed a Nation
The Challenger Disaster happened January 28th, 1986. Ronald Reagan delivered a speech
emphasizing the nation s strength and to honor the 7 crew members who died. President Ronald
Reagan s Challenger Disaster speech shows a confident and somber state of the nation regarding the
Challenger that went down. In his speech he justifies that everything is okay and to honor those who
died. The Challenger Disaster effectively repairs the nation with it s tone, rhetorical appeals, and
rhetorical tools.
Ronald Reagan s tone is somber but he confidently explains the impact to the nation with the ability to
recover and become stronger. A quote from the speech that displays the somber tone is, Today is a day

One rhetorical tool he used in his speech was negative connotation. We lost three astronauts in a
terrible accident on the ground (paragraph 2) , this was a negative event that happened but it didn t
stop us. As a nation we weren t easily fazed and that can be cruel because then we think nothing can
go wrong for us, It s hard to dazzle us (paragraph 4) . The negative connotation in this speech brings
out the somber tone. He confidently speaks about each of these things even though they are sad. He
doesn t let the negative connotation take away from the confident tone of his speech. A second
rhetorical tool he used was the use of pronouns to include the audience. He is always using pronouns
to make the audience feel like they are a part of it, we ve grown to used to wonders in this century
(paragraph 4) . We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them (paragraph 8) , he could have
said he will never forget them but instead he said we and that one word changes the whole idea of the
statement. The second quote really expresses the purpose of honoring the crewmembers. He uses a lot
of pronouns in the speech to include the audience, which brings together the tone of confidence and
the purpose letting everyone know it will be okay and that we will get through it together as a nation.
Reagan s speech has a strong message he achieved that through the use of rhetorical

The Importance Of An Exemplary Person In Confucius
The exemplary person (junzi) is someone who is worthy of leadership and respect. To do one s utmost
(zhong), observing ritual propriety (li), practicing filial piety (xiao), knowing what is appropriate (yi)
and having a deep love of learning (haoxne) are crucial aspect to becoming such a commanding and
versatile individual. These qualities, however, do not come easily as the way (dao) requires the types
of habits and commitments that the average person would normally find excessive. Nevertheless, for
those did who managed to persevere they found themselves walking the path towards harmony.
Although some may have achieved harmony, the questions must be asked: how and why did these
seemingly arbitrary ideas work? How does loving to learn and doing ones duty make a person
exemplary? For Confucius this was no easy task to explain. Compounding the issue further is that
many may find contradictions within the Analects itself. Despite this, these qualities do promote the
type of virtues that, in mind of Confucius at least, can create what some many consider to be an
exemplary person.
Doing one s utmost is something many may think comes naturally. This direct approach may seem
easy on the surface, nonetheless, for Confucius doing ones utmost requires a much more nuanced
approach. It is not enough for the exemplary person to do their best, but they must also aim to help
their peers, community and superiors. When ritual propriety is observed and the exemplary person is

Victorian Ghost Stories Nearly Always Encompass Family
Victorian Ghost Stories nearly always encompass family life in some way or another. One reason for
this may be to emphasize how abnormal a ghostly figure or hauntings really are within the story and
get readers thinking, what would happen if that was happening to them? Making the stories feel more
realistic to a Victorian readership. Family life within the era was held as one of the most important
aspects of their day to day lives, therefore it is only natural for the theme of family to be present
throughout many of the periods ghost stories and other genres. The Victorians also created the modern
Christmas, where families come together on Christmas Eve to read or re tell popular Ghost stories of
the time, many magazines which were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Newton also states that
The familiar unveils its association with the unfamiliar. M.R. James argues that the rooting of a story
in the common world of habits and timetables would aid the process of sympathetic identification
between the reader and the haunted one. This rapport was one more of the genre s correlations, and the
key to its power to frighten. The Old Nurse s Story does very well to stick to the genre s structure, and
is written to a high standard, that makes the readers feel fear, suspense and hope, which are all key to
grasping the reader s attention immersing them into the story and gaining the most out of it. Gaskell
does this by building the plot up to an ultimate climax, where the characters fully interact with the
supernatural beings, this build up is created by using the character s new heightened relationship and a
new unfamiliar setting, leaving the reader unnerved and waiting for something to happen. Charles
Dickens s also stated that The Old Nurse s Story was a very fine ghost story indeed. Nobly told, and
wonderfully managed. Dickens was a highly popular Victorian author during his own time and within
the modern literary world, his opinion on Gaskell s first ghost story shows just how much of a success
it was. The themes of the short story allow for all of the right elements to come through, the strongest
of these themes is the relationship Hester and Miss Rosamond share, although she is left

Characteristics Of Tropical Forest
Tropical Forest: Tropical forest s major features are equatorial and subequatorial regions. The climate
revolves around typically high temperatures. Tropical rain forests tend to receive large amounts of
rainfall ranging between 200 400cm. On the other hand, tropical dry forests receive 150 200cm of
precipitation and has 6 to 7 months of no precipitation, also known as the dry season. (Urry, Pearson,
2017) Tropical forests are covered by large amounts of plant life that overlap each other, which tends
to cause competition for light. For example, broadleaf evergreen trees are dominant in the forest.
When the dry season occurs their leaves drop to the ground floor and become homes to many species.
Some of these species include insects, spiders, and arthropods. The animal diversity ranks the highest
in tropical forest than the other terrestrial biome. Humans have impacted the tropical forest by creating
communities and expanding population growth within the forest. Now the agriculture and
development the humans are creating are destroying the tropical forests.
Savanna:
Similar to the tropical forests, the savanna also has equatorial and subequatorial regions. The average
rainfall it receives ranges between 30 50cm. Also, it has a dry season that occurs that can last up to
almost nine months. (Urry, Pearson, 2017) Unlike tropical forests, the temperatures in a savanna
biome stays in low ranges and they can vary by seasons. It is populated with trees that have thorns and
small leaves, this helps them survive in the environment. Most of the plants are adapted to droughts
and fire, which is very common factor in the dry seasons. Forb plants and grasses cover the ground.
Most of the animals the savanna inhibits are wildebeests, zebras, hyenas, and lions. Overall, there are
more insects, including termites. Humans have impacted the savanna by starting fires that have
minimized the tree population by destroying seedlings and saplings. Lastly, hunters have reduced the
large animal population.
Desert:
Deserts are mainly found at latitudes near the interior of continents. They hardly receive any rainfall
each year. Temperatures can vary by seasons and daily, depending on whether its considered a hot or
cold dessert.

Calypso is one of the most significant traditions in the Caribbean Music Industry. Come, Mister tally
man, tally me banana, daylight come and me wan go home, are the words to a famous calypso song
recorded by Harry Belafonte in 1956. The Free Dictionary defines calypso music as a type of music
that originated in the West Indies, notably in Trinidad, and is characterized by improvised lyrics on
topical or broadly humorous subjects . It can also be said that calypso is a certain style of music which
incorporates rhythms that are typical of African music. This type of music is seen played during

Lucho Gatica s El Reloj . It can be said that The Mighty Sparrow continued to climb the ladder of
success in his life, while becoming the most popular caypsonian of all time by the people. According
to Manuel (2006), Sparrow demonstrated year after year, with his social commentaries that the
calypsonian is really the eyes and ears of the people. Aldwyn Roberts, better known as Lord Kitchener
, shares with Mighty sparrow the title of the world s best known Calypso singer (Manuel, 2006).
Aldwyn Roberts was the son of a blacksmith, Stephen, and homemaker Albertha. Kitchener s success
began after he moved to England in 1948. His fame continued throughout the 1950s, when calypso
achieved international success (wikipedia.org). He began his career in Trinidad and won his first Road
March award for singing in 1946. He and the Mighty Sparrow proceeded to dominate the calypso
competitions of the sixties and seventies. It has been stated that Lord Kitchener won the road march
competition ten times between 1965 and 1976, more times than any other calypsonian. In the 1950s,
he explored West Africa and enjoyed a big hit there with his single, Nora . Farlex mentioned that for
30 years, Lord Kitchener ran his own calypso tent, Calypso Revue, by which he nurtured the talent of
many calypsonians, who are: Calypso Rose, David Rudder, Black Stalin and Denyse

Flat Stanley Character Analysis
Flat Stanley
 Have you ever wished that you could wake up one day and have a completely different look? If so,
you may wish you were Stanley Lambchop, an ordinary boy who wakes up one morning looking very
different he is only half an inch thick! Because of a falling bulletin board (which made Stanley flat),
Stanley gets to experience all sorts of fun adventures. Does living a flat life suit Stanley, though? You
will have to read this classic, funny book to find out!
 Flat Stanley would be targeted to my lowest readers. It is quite a preposterous notion to wake up

cannot wait until I do. However, I have no doubt that it is an incredible novel to use in the classroom
to help students learn about people who are different.

Statement of Teaching Philosophy
A teacher can never truly teach unless he is still learning himself. A lamp can never light another lamp
unless it continues to burn its own flame. The teacher who has come to the end of his subject, who has
no living traffic with his knowledge but merely repeats his lesson to his students, can only load their
minds, he cannot quicken them. ... Rabindranath Tagore (Nobel prize in literature in 1913)

If a teacher makes the material covered in a course interesting, the students are more likely to learn
and keep the information presented. Besides helping students learn course content, I think its teachers
role to help students develop broader skills that are important in all field and future careers. These
skills include verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and consideration of issues from
multiple viewpoints. As an assistant professor, I would use several methods to convey clearly
principles relevant to the chemistry class I would teach:
Demonstration supplemented lectures.
In class participation
Development of Internet Resources
Research papers.
Motivation
One of most challenging task in teaching is the motivation of students. However, students can be
motivated to work hard if they see that professor cares about their success and if they see that he/she
sets high standards for him/herself as well as for the students. Poor lecturing, unavailability during
office hours, unfulfilled promises of checking the answer to a question, and general sloppiness set the
students wondering, not in a good way. Furthermore, motivation is one key factor which brings
students in the classroom. This can also be achieved logically by letting them to know the significance
of science, how it changes world, how can we have a better future, how can we control fuel crisis, how

Women s Role In Christianity
Women have played a major part in Christianity and are an example of the unevenness of women s
commitments to history. Women like Mary Magdalene were at the cross and the first at the vacant
tomb. Conventional Christianity trusted that the announcements credited to St. Paul in I Timothy 2
that women were made second, sinned first, and ought to keep quiet. Women traditionalists accepted
and acknowledged these lessons as genuine. Jesus activities as indicated by the Bible reliably resonate
his confidence in the fairness of women, and that woman could study, educate and lecture.
Paul forced a patriarchal elucidation of Christianity that showed that women are substandard,

U.s. Military Bases Economic Benefits Essay
Despite the numerous amounts of struggles Okinawa has to face with the presence of U.S. military
bases, there are some benefits for Okinawa. First of all, the U.S. military bases bring economic
benefits to Okinawa. After large portions of Okinawa s land was taken by the U.S. military, the
agricultural industry in Okinawa, which was the main industry in Okinawa, suffered catastrophically.
In response, the U.S. military increased the pay for the local workers they hire and urged the
Okinawans in the agricultural industries to come work for the U.S. military. Approximately 70,000
local workers were hired by the U.S. military at most in the 1960s. In 2014, the U.S. military base
employs about 8,600 people from Okinawa and is considered as the second largest employer in
Okinawa, which is right below the Okinawan Prefectural government. (The United States Marine
Corps) The population of Okinawa in 2014 was approximately 1,400,000, excluding the U.S. service
men and their family members. (Okinawa Prefecture Planning Department Statistics Division) Though
the number of Okinawan workers hired to work in the military has decreased to less than one percent
of the population, there are several benefits for the workers. For example, the economic fluctuation
does not have a large impact on their job because as long as the military bases are present, the demand
for workers will not disappear. Some of the work contents for Okinawans hired to work on base are

Cultural Aspects Of Female Empowerment In The Disney Movie...
In the Disney movie, Moana, the main character demonstrates her personal strength as a woman
capable of determining her own future. Moana breaks the typical Disney mold of a princess being
associated with a prince as the main character. Moana realizes she has the sole power within herself to
take the lead role to save her village by returning the Heart of Te Fiti. The Heart of Te Fiti is what
gives the world and most importantly her people s island life. When the Heart of Te Fiti was stolen by
demi god Maui the world fell to darkness and the island began to deteriorate. The pop culture aspect
of female empowerment is exemplified in the scene where Moana is visited by her deceased
grandmother, Gramma Tala, after a moment of self doubt about being able to return the Heart of Te
Fiti in order to save her people and island. In the scene Gramma Tala is deceased but visits Moana in
the form of a vision. Moana envisions her people sailing the sea and her father upon one of the ships.
Moana was struggling with finding her inner self and utilizes her visit from Gramma Tala, to
acknowledge her self power. In the movie Moana, the I am Moana scene exemplifies the current
cultural theme of female empowerment being actualized when the main character, Moana realizes her
own inner strength after understanding her cultural heritage, receiving inspiration from her
grandmother, and embracing her role in building her future.
To begin, a key aspect of female empowerment visible in the

We all love dining out for good food and laughter with our family, friends or significant other.
Whether it s a birthday, an anniversary or a casual night on the town, eating at the right restaurant, that

That s what made Red lobster my favorite. it is not just a night of eating out, it is an experience. Not

Our monitoring solution of choice, PRTG, has widely available and granular plugins available to
monitor the system. This is due in part to Active Directory being such a commonly implemented
system. At the most basic level we ll want to make sure that the requisite Active Directory services are
running and functioning correctly. Deeper than that we ll have to go to purposeful plugins that can
monitor things like LDAP bind time, number of users, and performance metrics. DNS and DHCP
monitoring is very simple on Windows. Unlike its Unix like counterparts, the core network services on

The industrial robots are applied in all branches of the industry. The highest level of application is in
the automobile industry, but the number of installed robots is increasing in other industries as well
(Karabegovic, Dolecec, Husak, 2011). As the information technology is constantly developing and
there are permanent changes in industrial robotics, new functional solutions and higher possibilities of
the industrial robots applications are expected in the foreseeable future (Karabegovic, 2013). The
extended rivalry model, developed by Porter, will be applied to the robotics industry to determine how
attractive this industry is. By evaluating the strength of individual forces (potential entrants, rivals,
substitutes, buyers, and suppliers), it is possible to determine the degree to which forces of
globalization influence the structure of the robotic industry. Existing Competitors. Rivalry among
competitors within an industry use price discounting, new products, marketing, and other techniques
to be competitive. Profitability of an industry suffers from high rivalry. The intensity with which
companies compete and the basis on which they compete determine to which degree rivalry brings
down an industry s profitability (Porter, 2008). Pure competition is considered by economists as a

The Snake Charmer, By Jean Leon Gerome And Large Odalisqu
Two art works, The Snake Charmer (1870), by Jean Leon Gerome and Large Odalisqu (1814), by
Ingres are two depictions of the eastern world in a Western viewpoint. Both paintings where painted
by French artists who were portraying a culture and life they have never seen or experienced. Both
artworks were created from the expanding French empire. However, the works are inaccurate
representations of this exotic land, but both are rendered uniquely in their delineation. In The Snake
Charmer, by Jean Leon Gerome, we are given a scene of a young, nude boy, holding a snake and is
facing away from the viewer and towards a audience of various men. We see that it is taking place
taking place in a blue tiled room that is adorned with Arabic shapes and patterns and a foreign writing
that looks similar to Arabic. Gerome used oil to create the painting, rendering it so that the
brushstrokes were very tight and controlled. With this controlled style, he was able to embellish the
work with a lot of details from various cultures such as Egypt, Turkey and India. Adding this detail to
the composition was intended to create a sense of realism to the Western viewer, who would believe it
was accurate to real life due to the work s amount of clarity and intricacy. And with this clarity and
conciseness of stokes, Gerome was able to create false beliefs and impressions of the East to the
viewer. One example would be the nude the boy with the snake; his nudity in front of the crowd

Energy Conservation What can we do to help Carol D. Patterson Axia College University of Phoenix
March 7, 201 Introduction I am doing my essay on energy conservation. I would like to point out the
good and the bad points of energy conservation. What could happen if we do not start conserving the
different kinds of energy we have left? What are the different kinds of energy? How might we put into
practice the different kinds of energy? In my paper, I will explain these forms of energy, the costs, and
the time line to get it done. Discussion Energy Conservation There are many ways to conserve energy.

Managing Information Security Risk Of A Cyber Attack
Next, AAE will use the NIST SP 800 39: Managing Information Security Risk to generate a response
for each risk.
Note that three of the risks are global risks; the data breach, terrorist, and rising fuel prices risks all
stem from AAE s global marketplace activities. According to the SP 800 39, AAE could utilize one of
five strategies to respond to risk. It could choose to: 1) accept risks, 2) avoid risks, 3) transfer/share
the risks, 4) mitigate the risks, or 5) avoid the risks. Following are the responses and strategies
generated by the register:
Risk 1 Cyber Attack (Global_1):
Mitigate C3J recommends AAE to use the defense in depth approach to security to mitigate the risk of
a cyber attack. Essentially, defense in depth involves employing multiple security systems to protect
company data. The concept works on the premise that if one system fails, another will be in place to
protect the data. Examples of defense in depth safeguards include using encryption to protect data
confidentiality, implementing solutions to detect an attack, implementing solutions to backup and
recover data, managing log files, and implementing a strong security awareness program. If a breach
occurs the Director of IT will notify the Executive Director and any affected parties before activating
the AAE incident response plan (IRP).
Risk 2 Rising aeronautical fuel prices (Global):
Transfer/share Crude oil is the source of jet fuel; therefore, jet fuel prices are directly correlated to oil

Liam O Flaherty s The Sniper
In short stories, many people may overlook how greatly an author described the setting. It is important
that a well thought out framework is included in a piece of literature. The Sniper by Liam O Flaherty,
gives a fair setting of Dublin, Ireland at the break of the night. On a rooftop, across the large city
street, the sniper unknowingly faced his brother. They re inevitably against one another, both now torn
apart by civil war. The night they clashed was what the author seemingly described the most. Setting
for this story creates conflict because the sniper had extreme difficulty seeing his brother in the
darkness. The narrator had said, The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay enveloped in
darkness but for the dim light of

Cause And Effect Of School Shootings
High school shootings have been occurring all over the country. All incidents leading to one or more
deaths: Jonesboro, Fayetteville, Edinboro, Pearl, Moses Lake, Grayson, Olivehurst, Bethel, West
Paducah, and many more. It will never happen to me, you could say, well, it could.y Behind school
shootings students spend one hundred and eighty days per year at school, they spend so much time
getting an education, but is the environment they re in actually safe? There are many causes of school
shootings and so they are effects.
The reality of the situation is that there are many numbers of reasons that a school shooting may
happen. There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since 2013, as indicated by a
record made by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
There are many reasons we need to use for the reasons for school shootings however the most
prevalent one is harassing. According to nobullying.com, ¨Over 77 percent of students have been
bullied verbally, mentally, and physically. Each day about 160,000 students miss school because of
bullying or because of their fear of being bullied.¨ According to nveee.org, ¨86% of students said,
other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them causes teenagers to turn to lethal
violence in schools.¨ When a student gets harassed or bullied it adds anger inside of them and hate.
The feeling of being picked on and having this negative attention can make a child act out or feel
hatred and somehow want a way to let the anger out. They could also have it all stuffed inside with all
of these horrible thoughts and one day decide to explode which could result in a horrible outcome.
Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most
school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An
opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. According to
newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure
of the mental health system than from easy access to guns. Eighty per cent of the population believes
that mental illness is at least partially to

conclusion to attack Caesar on the Ides of March at the Theater of Pompey during a session of the
senate. The day arrived and Brutus and the conspirators made their way to the meeting. Many bad

Caesar bleeding to death and trying to persuade him not to attend the Senate meeting, Spurinna
warning Caesar to beware dangers, and even Caesar himself being ill the day of the meeting. All of
these hindrances delayed Caesar s arrival and worried the conspirators yet Brutus insisted that they

An Analysis of Google
An Analysis of Google
A)Google s two sided platform concentrates on products and services that unite users in the network.
The triumvirate of Schmidt, Brin and Page has the CEO and two presidents orchestrating (in Schmidt
s own words) a kind of run and shoot offense (Google:3), allowing the search engine to profit both as
a place where web searchers can locate information and a place where businesses can advertise their
products. What began as a Stanford University research project became an algorithmic dream,
providing quick access to web surfers around the world and a new way for advertisers to reach an
audience. The two sides of the market searching and advertising have same side network effects as
well as cross side network effects. The same side network effects may be measured by the amount of
users who rely on Google to provide them with web content. Google has secured more market share
than any other search engine in the world. The same side effects, therefore, are greater user numbers
for Google and greater desire for content providers to be seen and/or located by Google. The cross
side network effect may be measured by the draw such users have on advertisers. The more user
numbers grow, the more interest Google is to advertisers looking to capitalize on the network market.
Google Search Engine Marketing, for example, allows advertisers to pay the search engine to list its
ads with a Cost per Click (CPC) model such as AdWords and AdSense. One of the benefits

Pakistani government continues to fail its female citizens by not protecting them and their right to

quality of an education is greatly affected by a lack of resources. Lacking resources include money,

Consequences Of Underage Drinking
Underage drinking has been a growing concern among the public. As society idolizes the party life

generations are not aware of the responsibilities that come along with drinking, they are ignorant to
the fact that there are ramification that come along with underage drinking. Though there are factors
that play along with the juvenile party trend, as a community, we must come together and be aware of
the poor results these actions can cause. Underage drinking has become an outrage; its use among
teenagers has consequences such as brain damage, addictiveness, and safety risks. Teenagers can tend

Customs and Trade Much of the history of international relations and trade concerns efforts to
promote free trade among nations. The 17th century saw the growth of restrictive policies that later
came to be known as mercantilism. The mercantilists held that economic policy should be nationalistic
and should aim at securing the wealth and power of the state. Governments were led to impose price

Patrice Lumumba’s Struggle Against Belgian Imperialism Essay
Patrice Lumumba s Struggle Against Belgian Imperialism
It is hard to believe that in 2002 there is still imperialism being practiced in the world, but the fact of
the matter is, it is. Imperialism is the policy of extending a nation s territory or power by establishing
dominance over other nations. A modern example of imperialism is the Congo.
At the 1885 Berlin Conference, where the European powers carved up most of Africa among
themselves, they sanctioned the claim of Belgian King Leopold II to sole authority over the Congo, a
land mass 75 times the area of Belgium. The Congo was virtually his private property. He wiped out

We have known sarcasm and insults, endured blows morning, noon and night because we were

lad but which only recognised the right of the strongest. We have seen that this law was quite different
for a white than for a black: accommodating for the former, cruel and inhuman for the latter.
It is evident from this excerpt that Lumumba s Congo would not be one where the Belgians could
remain in complete control.
The imperialist powers, led by Washington together with Brussels, undertook a series of operations
designed to undermine the new Lumumba led government. Less than two weeks after Congo s
independence, the former Belgian rulers succeeded in organizing a secessionist movement in the
province of Katanga, where U.S. and European companies had vast mineral holdings. On July 11,
1960, Moise Tshombe, a wealthy businessman and leader of the UCOL party who bitterly opposed
Lumumba, declared Katanga s separation from the Congo. UCOL originally stood for the Union for
Colonization but then was later changed to the Union for the Collaboration of the Middle Classes in
Katanga due to the feverish anti colonial spirit in the Congo. Brussels sent 10,000 troops to Katanga to

Smoot Hawley Tariff Essay
Smoot Hawley Tariff: A Destructive Contribution
Farmers all through the 1920s had experienced intense competition and declining prices because of
overproduction [;] U.S. agricultural interests lobbied the federal government for protection against
agricultural imports (Britannica 2015). Herbert Hoover had sided with the farmers in raising
Agricultural tariffs that eventually led to his presidency and signing of the act. This Smoot Hawley
Tariff as it was called would increase the cost of imported goods so that U.S. consumers would spend
their money on U.S. products in turn would save U.S. jobs in import competing industries (Suranovic
2012). The act went through various revisions leading up to the presidents signing that rose tariffs for

The tariff indeed contributed to the Great Depression by destroying international that made economic
growth here and in many countries impossible. As foreign nations retaliated against the tariff, U.S.
exports and imports were set to a declining rate. Countless sectors of the economy were hurt, as we
were not selling enough goods in the world market leading many industries like agriculture to
collapse. With the collapse of industries came unemployment leaving many families to struggle to get
through day to day life. Many of the Americans lost their money due to bank failures happening one
after the other. Today we try to practice a more safe approach on trade, which is free trade. The tariff
was an act of Protectionism and it failed to protect what it was meant to protect, hurting farmers and
eventually spreading across the U.S. The Smoot Hawley tariff may have not been necessary but in all
it was timing that had lead this act to prolong the Great

This paper will cover information about Hawaiian airlines. Founded in 1929, now in its 87th year of
consecutive service, Hawaiian Airlines is Hawai i s biggest and longest serving airline, as well as the
largest provider of passenger air service from its primary visitor markets on the U.S. mainland.
Specifically, research to describe the airline, its aircraft fleet, route structure and number of employees
will be provided. Information to determine whether Hawaiian airlines is organized as a corporation
with private ownership or is owned by the national government will be given and discussed. Also, a
brief description of the governmental agency or authority responsible for regulation of safety, as well
as the certification requirements and minimum flight time for the commercial airline flight deck
crewmembers. The governmental agency or authority that is empowered to regulate the routes flown,
rates charged, and other economic aspects of the airline s flight operations will be identified and
discussed. Information will be given on the extent to which the airline s fleet consists of owned vs.
leased aircraft. All accidents involving an aircraft operated by that airline since 1/01/2000 will be

The Anti Vivisection Society ( Aavs )
Animals are living creatures and we should not experiment on them, forcing them to live with injuries
or illnesses: It is wrong. We should not be able to manipulate them and hurt them forcing them to live
with injuries or illnesses we inflicted without them being able to fight back. They suffer everyday
being held in small cages with no freedom until they find their untimely end most likely being
euthanized. Testing on animals is not even a reliable study; this is something that the American Anti
Vivisection Society (AAVS) argues. The AAVS is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to
advocacy for animals and eliminating animals from all experimentation in the USA. The AAVS
believe animals have the right not to be exploited for science and we should not have to choose
between helping humans and harming animals. (2013, paragraph 9) Using animals in
experimentations is questioned more and more every year because of the reduced reliability shown
over time. Some scientific limitations are that even though a treatment or medicine may work on an
animal the outcome on a human may be entirely different. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike
Leavitt says, nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately
predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies. (2013, paragraph 16)
Studies using animals are flawed because of the differences in physiology, metabolism, anatomy, and
genetics. Helen Marston brings up a

What Intermolecular Forces Explain Why Propionic Acid Has...
Intermolecular forces explain why propionic acid has the highest boiling point because, the
relationship between boiling points and intermolecular forces is directly proportional. The stronger the
intermolecular forces, the higher the boiling point. The force of attraction between molecules is based
on the polarity of the molecule. Therefore, as bonds increase in polarity, intermolecular forces become
stronger.
There are four main types of intermolecular forces, the strongest force, first place, is ionic bonds,
second place hydrogen bond interactions, third place dipole interactions, last place London dispersion/
Van der Waals interactions. Ionic forces occur when a complete transfer of electrons takes place when
one interacting atom is much more electronegative than the other, causing atoms and molecules to take
on charges. Hydrogen bonding occurs when a hydrogen atom is bonded to a very electro negative
atom, specifically a nitrogen, oxygen or, fluorine atom. The third strongest is dipole interactions which
is a sharing of electrons also known as covalent bonding. Finally, London dispersion/ Van der ... Show

1 Propanol is in the middle with a boiling point of 97oC. The molecule is like propionic acid because
the molecule also has a hydrogen bond (O H) but, it differs because the second carbon on 1 propanol
contains a non polar covalent bond (Van der Waals forces) instead of dipole interactions. 1 propanol
also contains a strand of hydrocarbons which increases Van der Waals forces so to larger surface area.
Lastly propionaldehyde has a boiling point of 48oC because it does not contain any hydrogen
bonding. The only intermolecular interactions in propionaldehyde are dipole forces and Van der Waals

The Impact Of Freedom And The American Dream
Freedom and the American Dream are both something that Americans stand and strive for in the
United States. For many it is a major part of our lives, for some more than others. When the American
Dream is asked to be explained or defined a common response is that it is an accomplishment of
wealth and prosperity through hard work and success, especially those living in the United States.
When searched, the American Dream is described as the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity
traditionally held to be available to every American (American Dream, Dictionary.com). This
description plays a major role as these are the goals that were set to come from the Civil Rights Act of
1964. Many fought for the right to be free especially when it came to racial inequality in our country
but many did not receive these benefits or opportunities of equality as there were negative and positive
effects that came directly from the Civil Rights Movement.
The first American slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.
Their job was to aid in the production of crops such as tobacco as the Virginians were desperate for
labor, to grow enough to stay alive... needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence, to grow tobacco for
export (Zinn 24,25). The slaves that were being brought to the Americas were seen as builders of the
economic foundations of the new nation and as time passed the ownership of slaves dwindled but
inequality and segregation grew to be more prevalent in the U.S ( Slavery in America ). On January
1st, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order which
freed slaves in the United States not within the Confederacy, under Union Control. Two years later the
13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which abolished slavery but many Southern States
managed to create unattainable prerequisites for blacks to live, work or participate in society. With
nearly one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans were still treated
just as unequally. Oppression, race inspired violence, segregation and an unequal world of
disenfranchisement lingered across Southern States for African Americans. The Jim Crow Laws

Theme Of Death Of The Moth By Virginia Woolf
The story by Virginia Wolf universally illustrates the struggle for life and death. It is a common phrase
that death is inevitable the story shows the struggles with life that are not won in the end. In The Death
of the Moth, Woolf observes a moth flying against a window pane, seemingly trying to get to the
outside world, and not aware that the window pane is blocking its way. There is truth in saying the
only commonality between lives is the inevitability of death. The Death of the Moth by Virginia Woolf
explores this theme. Although the thesis is never formally stated, it can be interpreted to be that death
is inescapable, and in spite of life being an uphill battle, it can never be won as eventually death
claims us all. Taking into account Woolf s personal life, which was plagued with bouts of mental
illnesses, ultimately resulting in her suicide; this essay could be considered a comparison between her
own life and the moth s. This essay is intended for the general public, but it particularly resonates with
women and minorities, this is because of Woolf s description of the moth s battles. In retelling the
moth s struggles the audience develops a certain bond with the moth, this is amplified for people who
have been repressed, as they can relate to the hardships this looked down upon moth has endured.
The author has a pessimistic view on life and death which is manifested in the tone. Woolf is clear on
her view that life is just one battle after another, and that

  • 2. Miles Davis Kind Of Blue Essay Miles Davis Kind of Blue is the single biggest selling jazz album ever made, selling over 5 million copies, and was my favorite to learn about. It is known to be one of albums that convert people to liking jazz styled music, even though it was created over fifty years ago. The most significant part of the album to me was that it made such an impact on the jazz community and it was only made in seven hours and all but only one of the tracks were first takes. What has stuck with me in the documentary was the saying, The first thought is the best thought. I really appreciated this because the artist stuck with their initial first gut feeling. The music was really innovative and most specifically, the opening of So What , was completely improvised and then the riff takes off, allowing to be one of the most iconic songs in jazz (in my opinion). The magic of music was truly created in this album creation and led a different direction of jazz creation. Time Out by the Dave Brubek Quartet was what was said to be a dream ... Australia with the historical background of the Aborigine s and East Asia s numerous countries with bumpy but steady move toward democracy. In this paper, I will compare the Aboriginal and the countries that have democracies in East Asia . The history of East Asia goes back as far as 7500 BC in the prehistoric Neolithic period, includes the days of the empire of China, and disseminates into the present day. East Asia at one time was considered the nucleus of Authoritarian rule. Recently there have been milestones towards developing a properly functioning democracy. Additionally the country Burma, is heading toward democracy for the first time in over twenty years. Citizens do express concerns about authoritarian rule and most favor the liberal form of democracy with rule of law, freedom of expression, and judicial independence. The Aboriginal democracy traces back to the right to vote in Australia, which occurred in the 1800s. Ronald Reagan delivered a speech emphasizing the nation s strength and to honor the 7 crew members who died. President Ronald Reagan s Challenger Disaster speech shows a confident and somber state of the nation regarding the Challenger that went down. In his speech he justifies that everything is okay and to honor those who died. The Challenger Disaster effectively repairs the nation with it s tone, rhetorical appeals, and rhetorical tools. As a nation we weren t easily fazed and that can be cruel because then we think nothing can go wrong for us, It s hard to dazzle us (paragraph 4) . The negative connotation in this speech brings out the somber tone. He confidently speaks about each of these things even though they are sad. He doesn t let the negative connotation take away from the confident tone of his speech. A second rhetorical tool he used was the use of pronouns to include the audience. He is always using pronouns to make the audience feel like they are a part of it, we ve grown to used to wonders in this century (paragraph 4) . We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them (paragraph 8) , he could have said he will never forget them but instead he said we and that one word changes the whole idea of the statement. The second quote really expresses the purpose of honoring the crewmembers. • 5. The Importance Of An Exemplary Person In Confucius The exemplary person (junzi) is someone who is worthy of leadership and respect. To do one s utmost (zhong), observing ritual propriety (li), practicing filial piety (xiao), knowing what is appropriate (yi) and having a deep love of learning (haoxne) are crucial aspect to becoming such a commanding and versatile individual. These qualities, however, do not come easily as the way (dao) requires the types of habits and commitments that the average person would normally find excessive. Nevertheless, for those did who managed to persevere they found themselves walking the path towards harmony. Although some may have achieved harmony, the questions must be asked: how and why did these seemingly arbitrary ideas work? How does loving to learn and doing ones duty make a person exemplary? For Confucius this was no easy task to explain. Compounding the issue further is that many may find contradictions within the Analects itself. Despite this, these qualities do promote the type of virtues that, in mind of Confucius at least, can create what some many consider to be an exemplary person. Doing one s utmost is something many may think comes naturally. This direct approach may seem easy on the surface, nonetheless, for Confucius doing ones utmost requires a much more nuanced approach. It is not enough for the exemplary person to do their best, but they must also aim to help their peers, community and superiors. When ritual propriety is observed and the exemplary person is ... One reason for this may be to emphasize how abnormal a ghostly figure or hauntings really are within the story and get readers thinking, what would happen if that was happening to them? Making the stories feel more realistic to a Victorian readership. Family life within the era was held as one of the most important aspects of their day to day lives, therefore it is only natural for the theme of family to be present throughout many of the periods ghost stories and other genres. James argues that the rooting of a story in the common world of habits and timetables would aid the process of sympathetic identification between the reader and the haunted one. This rapport was one more of the genre s correlations, and the key to its power to frighten. The Old Nurse s Story does very well to stick to the genre s structure, and is written to a high standard, that makes the readers feel fear, suspense and hope, which are all key to grasping the reader s attention immersing them into the story and gaining the most out of it. Gaskell does this by building the plot up to an ultimate climax, where the characters fully interact with the supernatural beings, this build up is created by using the character s new heightened relationship and a new unfamiliar setting, leaving the reader unnerved and waiting for something to happen. Charles Dickens s also stated that The Old Nurse s Story was a very fine ghost story indeed. Nobly told, and wonderfully managed. Dickens was a highly popular Victorian author during his own time and within the modern literary world, his opinion on Gaskell s first ghost story shows just how much of a success it was. • 8. Characteristics Of Tropical Forest Tropical Forest: Tropical forest s major features are equatorial and subequatorial regions. The climate revolves around typically high temperatures. Tropical rain forests tend to receive large amounts of rainfall ranging between 200 400cm. On the other hand, tropical dry forests receive 150 200cm of precipitation and has 6 to 7 months of no precipitation, also known as the dry season. (Urry, Pearson, 2017) Tropical forests are covered by large amounts of plant life that overlap each other, which tends to cause competition for light. For example, broadleaf evergreen trees are dominant in the forest. When the dry season occurs their leaves drop to the ground floor and become homes to many species. Some of these species include insects, spiders, and arthropods. The animal diversity ranks the highest in tropical forest than the other terrestrial biome. Humans have impacted the tropical forest by creating communities and expanding population growth within the forest. Now the agriculture and development the humans are creating are destroying the tropical forests. Savanna: Similar to the tropical forests, the savanna also has equatorial and subequatorial regions. The average rainfall it receives ranges between 30 50cm. Also, it has a dry season that occurs that can last up to almost nine months. (Urry, Pearson, 2017) Unlike tropical forests, the temperatures in a savanna biome stays in low ranges and they can vary by seasons. It is populated with trees that have thorns and small leaves, this helps them survive in the environment. Most of the plants are adapted to droughts and fire, which is very common factor in the dry seasons. Forb plants and grasses cover the ground. Most of the animals the savanna inhibits are wildebeests, zebras, hyenas, and lions. Overall, there are more insects, including termites. Humans have impacted the savanna by starting fires that have minimized the tree population by destroying seedlings and saplings. Lastly, hunters have reduced the large animal population. Desert: Deserts are mainly found at latitudes near the interior of continents. They hardly receive any rainfall each year. Women traditionalists accepted and acknowledged these lessons as genuine. First of all, the U.S. military bases bring economic benefits to Okinawa. After large portions of Okinawa s land was taken by the U.S. military, the agricultural industry in Okinawa, which was the main industry in Okinawa, suffered catastrophically. In response, the U.S. military increased the pay for the local workers they hire and urged the Okinawans in the agricultural industries to come work for the U.S. military. In the Disney movie, Moana, the main character demonstrates her personal strength as a woman capable of determining her own future. Moana breaks the typical Disney mold of a princess being associated with a prince as the main character. Moana realizes she has the sole power within herself to take the lead role to save her village by returning the Heart of Te Fiti. The Heart of Te Fiti is what gives the world and most importantly her people s island life. When the Heart of Te Fiti was stolen by demi god Maui the world fell to darkness and the island began to deteriorate. The pop culture aspect of female empowerment is exemplified in the scene where Moana is visited by her deceased grandmother, Gramma Tala, after a moment of self doubt about being able to return the Heart of Te Fiti in order to save her people and island. In the scene Gramma Tala is deceased but visits Moana in the form of a vision. Moana envisions her people sailing the sea and her father upon one of the ships. Moana was struggling with finding her inner self and utilizes her visit from Gramma Tala, to acknowledge her self power. In the movie Moana, the I am Moana scene exemplifies the current cultural theme of female empowerment being actualized when the main character, Moana realizes her own inner strength after understanding her cultural heritage, receiving inspiration from her grandmother, and embracing her role in building her future. To begin, a key aspect of female empowerment visible in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Snake Charmer, By Jean Leon Gerome And Large Odalisqu Two art works, The Snake Charmer (1870), by Jean Leon Gerome and Large Odalisqu (1814), by Ingres are two depictions of the eastern world in a Western viewpoint. Both paintings where painted by French artists who were portraying a culture and life they have never seen or experienced. Both artworks were created from the expanding French empire. However, the works are inaccurate representations of this exotic land, but both are rendered uniquely in their delineation. In The Snake Charmer, by Jean Leon Gerome, we are given a scene of a young, nude boy, holding a snake and is facing away from the viewer and towards a audience of various men. We see that it is taking place taking place in a blue tiled room that is adorned with Arabic shapes and patterns and a foreign writing that looks similar to Arabic. Gerome used oil to create the painting, rendering it so that the brushstrokes were very tight and controlled. With this controlled style, he was able to embellish the work with a lot of details from various cultures such as Egypt, Turkey and India. Adding this detail to the composition was intended to create a sense of realism to the Western viewer, who would believe it was accurate to real life due to the work s amount of clarity and intricacy. And with this clarity and conciseness of stokes, Gerome was able to create false beliefs and impressions of the East to the viewer. Note that three of the risks are global risks; the data breach, terrorist, and rising fuel prices risks all stem from AAE s global marketplace activities. According to the SP 800 39, AAE could utilize one of five strategies to respond to risk. It could choose to: 1) accept risks, 2) avoid risks, 3) transfer/share the risks, 4) mitigate the risks, or 5) avoid the risks. Following are the responses and strategies generated by the register: Risk 1 Cyber Attack (Global_1): Mitigate C3J recommends AAE to use the defense in depth approach to security to mitigate the risk of a cyber attack. Essentially, defense in depth involves employing multiple security systems to protect company data. The concept works on the premise that if one system fails, another will be in place to protect the data. Examples of defense in depth safeguards include using encryption to protect data confidentiality, implementing solutions to detect an attack, implementing solutions to backup and recover data, managing log files, and implementing a strong security awareness program. If a breach occurs the Director of IT will notify the Executive Director and any affected parties before activating the AAE incident response plan (IRP). There have been 142 school shootings in the United States since 2013, as indicated by a record made by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. There are many reasons we need to use for the reasons for school shootings however the most prevalent one is harassing. According to nobullying.com, ¨Over 77 percent of students have been bullied verbally, mentally, and physically. Each day about 160,000 students miss school because of bullying or because of their fear of being bullied.¨ According to nveee.org, ¨86% of students said, other kids picking on them, making fun of them or bullying them causes teenagers to turn to lethal violence in schools.¨ When a student gets harassed or bullied it adds anger inside of them and hate. The feeling of being picked on and having this negative attention can make a child act out or feel hatred and somehow want a way to let the anger out. They could also have it all stuffed inside with all of these horrible thoughts and one day decide to explode which could result in a horrible outcome. Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. • 39. customs and trade Customs and Trade Much of the history of international relations and trade concerns efforts to promote free trade among nations. The 17th century saw the growth of restrictive policies that later came to be known as mercantilism. The mercantilists held that economic policy should be nationalistic and should aim at securing the wealth and power of the state. Governments were led to impose price and wage controls, promote exports of finished goods and imports of raw materials, and prohibit the exports of raw materials and the import of finished goods. In the middle of the 18th century a strong reaction against mercantilist attitudes began. In France, the economists demanded liberty of production and trade. In England, Adam Smith ... Despite the obvious advantages, governments have to explain to their citizens the advantages of the open, rules based trading system and that the trade with either developed or developing countries offers enormous opportunities and, as with all trade, mutual benefits. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), from its inception, contributes to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral, non discriminating basis. The OECD helps the WTO move forward on trade liberalization, stressing the importance of ensuring that non OECD countries become fully integrated into the global trading system. The importance, and inevitability, of change has been stressed in many aspects of OECD work, including the OECD Job Study. The main aim is to improve job prospects. The OECD also has an important role to play in recognizing that the nature of trade in changing. The trade agenda of the future must move well beyond the traditional issues of trade between national economies to meet the demands of a globalizing one. Investment issues are at the forefront; firms invest to trade and trade to invest. • 40. Patrice Lumumba’s Struggle Against Belgian Imperialism Essay Patrice Lumumba s Struggle Against Belgian Imperialism It is hard to believe that in 2002 there is still imperialism being practiced in the world, but the fact of the matter is, it is. Imperialism is the policy of extending a nation s territory or power by establishing dominance over other nations. A modern example of imperialism is the Congo. At the 1885 Berlin Conference, where the European powers carved up most of Africa among themselves, they sanctioned the claim of Belgian King Leopold II to sole authority over the Congo, a land mass 75 times the area of Belgium. The Congo was virtually his private property. He wiped out some 10 million people, around half the population, in his determination to extract every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Lumumba s intentions became clear from his Independence Day speech. He said, We have known sarcasm and insults, endured blows morning, noon and night because we were niggers ... We have seen our lands despoiled under the terms of what was supposedly the law of the lad but which only recognised the right of the strongest. We have seen that this law was quite different for a white than for a black: accommodating for the former, cruel and inhuman for the latter. It is evident from this excerpt that Lumumba s Congo would not be one where the Belgians could remain in complete control. The imperialist powers, led by Washington together with Brussels, undertook a series of operations designed to undermine the new Lumumba led government. Less than two weeks after Congo s independence, the former Belgian rulers succeeded in organizing a secessionist movement in the province of Katanga, where U.S. and European companies had vast mineral holdings. On July 11, 1960, Moise Tshombe, a wealthy businessman and leader of the UCOL party who bitterly opposed Lumumba, declared Katanga s separation from the Congo. UCOL originally stood for the Union for Colonization but then was later changed to the Union for the Collaboration of the Middle Classes in Katanga due to the feverish anti colonial spirit in the Congo. Brussels sent 10,000 troops to Katanga to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Smoot Hawley Tariff Essay Smoot Hawley Tariff: A Destructive Contribution Farmers all through the 1920s had experienced intense competition and declining prices because of overproduction [;] U.S. agricultural interests lobbied the federal government for protection against agricultural imports (Britannica 2015). Herbert Hoover had sided with the farmers in raising Agricultural tariffs that eventually led to his presidency and signing of the act. This Smoot Hawley Tariff as it was called would increase the cost of imported goods so that U.S. consumers would spend their money on U.S. products in turn would save U.S. jobs in import competing industries (Suranovic 2012). The tariff indeed contributed to the Great Depression by destroying international that made economic growth here and in many countries impossible. As foreign nations retaliated against the tariff, U.S. exports and imports were set to a declining rate. Countless sectors of the economy were hurt, as we were not selling enough goods in the world market leading many industries like agriculture to collapse. With the collapse of industries came unemployment leaving many families to struggle to get through day to day life. Many of the Americans lost their money due to bank failures happening one after the other. Today we try to practice a more safe approach on trade, which is free trade. • 43. The Anti Vivisection Society ( Aavs ) Animals are living creatures and we should not experiment on them, forcing them to live with injuries or illnesses: It is wrong. We should not be able to manipulate them and hurt them forcing them to live with injuries or illnesses we inflicted without them being able to fight back. They suffer everyday being held in small cages with no freedom until they find their untimely end most likely being euthanized. Testing on animals is not even a reliable study; this is something that the American Anti Vivisection Society (AAVS) argues. The AAVS is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to advocacy for animals and eliminating animals from all experimentation in the USA. The AAVS believe animals have the right not to be exploited for science and we should not have to choose between helping humans and harming animals. (2013, paragraph 9) Using animals in experimentations is questioned more and more every year because of the reduced reliability shown over time. Some scientific limitations are that even though a treatment or medicine may work on an animal the outcome on a human may be entirely different. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt says, nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies. (2013, paragraph 16) Studies using animals are flawed because of the differences in physiology, metabolism, anatomy, and genetics. Helen Marston brings up a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. What Intermolecular Forces Explain Why Propionic Acid Has... Intermolecular forces explain why propionic acid has the highest boiling point because, the relationship between boiling points and intermolecular forces is directly proportional. The stronger the intermolecular forces, the higher the boiling point. The force of attraction between molecules is based on the polarity of the molecule. Therefore, as bonds increase in polarity, intermolecular forces become stronger. There are four main types of intermolecular forces, the strongest force, first place, is ionic bonds, second place hydrogen bond interactions, third place dipole interactions, last place London dispersion/ Van der Waals interactions. Ionic forces occur when a complete transfer of electrons takes place when one interacting atom is much more electronegative than the other, causing atoms and molecules to take on charges. Hydrogen bonding occurs when a hydrogen atom is bonded to a very electro negative atom, specifically a nitrogen, oxygen or, fluorine atom. The third strongest is dipole interactions which is a sharing of electrons also known as covalent bonding. Finally, London dispersion/ Van der ... • 46. The Impact Of Freedom And The American Dream Freedom and the American Dream are both something that Americans stand and strive for in the United States. For many it is a major part of our lives, for some more than others. When the American Dream is asked to be explained or defined a common response is that it is an accomplishment of wealth and prosperity through hard work and success, especially those living in the United States. When searched, the American Dream is described as the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American (American Dream, Dictionary.com). This description plays a major role as these are the goals that were set to come from the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Many fought for the right to be free especially when it came to racial inequality in our country but many did not receive these benefits or opportunities of equality as there were negative and positive effects that came directly from the Civil Rights Movement. The first American slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Their job was to aid in the production of crops such as tobacco as the Virginians were desperate for labor, to grow enough to stay alive... needed labor, to grow corn for subsistence, to grow tobacco for export (Zinn 24,25). The slaves that were being brought to the Americas were seen as builders of the economic foundations of the new nation and as time passed the ownership of slaves dwindled but inequality and segregation grew to be more prevalent in the U.S ( Slavery in America ). On January 1st, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order which freed slaves in the United States not within the Confederacy, under Union Control. Two years later the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which abolished slavery but many Southern States managed to create unattainable prerequisites for blacks to live, work or participate in society. With nearly one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans were still treated just as unequally. Oppression, race inspired violence, segregation and an unequal world of disenfranchisement lingered across Southern States for African Americans. The Jim Crow Laws ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Theme Of Death Of The Moth By Virginia Woolf The story by Virginia Wolf universally illustrates the struggle for life and death. It is a common phrase that death is inevitable the story shows the struggles with life that are not won in the end. In The Death of the Moth, Woolf observes a moth flying against a window pane, seemingly trying to get to the outside world, and not aware that the window pane is blocking its way. There is truth in saying the only commonality between lives is the inevitability of death. The Death of the Moth by Virginia Woolf explores this theme. Although the thesis is never formally stated, it can be interpreted to be that death is inescapable, and in spite of life being an uphill battle, it can never be won as eventually death claims us all. Taking into account Woolf s personal life, which was plagued with bouts of mental illnesses, ultimately resulting in her suicide; this essay could be considered a comparison between her own life and the moth s. This essay is intended for the general public, but it particularly resonates with women and minorities, this is because of Woolf s description of the moth s battles. In retelling the moth s struggles the audience develops a certain bond with the moth, this is amplified for people who have been repressed, as they can relate to the hardships this looked down upon moth has endured. The author has a pessimistic view on life and death which is manifested in the tone. Woolf is clear on her view that life is just one battle after another, and that ...
