Negative Consequences Of Banning Books
Banning is the action of prohibiting something usually from the public eye. People have typically
banned books due to them finding something offensive in the content. Some people say this is an
infringement on our first amendment rights. Others believe that only parents should a say in what
their children can read and only their children, not anybody else s. Better thesis?
Banning and challenging books are two different things. A challenge is an attempt to remove or
restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of
those materials. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/22/banned books week

Sometimes intentionally or unintentionally librarians can choose to not put a book on the shelf.
Since librarians choose what books make it onto the shelves, they have a small influence on
what someone reads. If a book isn t present on a shelf, it s not going to be read. Something that is
not there is not there. A certain author named Barry Lyga experienced this. After writing a book
called Boy Toy about a 18 year old boy who deals with memories of being sexually abused by a
teacher when he was only twelve and later with that same teacher getting out of jail early, Barry
was expecting some backlash. He got none. He received glowing reviews from librarians and
magazines, but the

Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey is a novel that features vibrant character development but the
biggest development is that which occurs in Catherine Morland. Catherine s character nearly
develops in all components of her being and she is able to evolve from the unorthodox heroine that
she is initially described as. In the novel, Catherine starts out as an incredibly naГЇve and
inexperienced girl who confuses all facets of the real world as the plot in a Gothic novel. Catherine
develops as a characterthrough her social interactions with those around her as it helps her gain
experience with how to correctly perceive the world. With her newly gained experience of her
surroundings, Catherine develops and is able to see the real world through a social lens rather than
her own subjective lens or that of a Gothic lens.
Catherine s growth is evident in the very first line of the novel as it states No one who had ever
seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine. Her
situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and disposition, were all
equally against her (37). Catherine s lowly heroine figure is made known instantly so that her
development is much more apparent at the end of the novel. From the start of the novel Catherine
is not a typical heroine, she is unorthodox in all facets of her life including the status of her parents.
Catherine is initially also an incredibly naive character and this fuels her

Racial Ideologies in Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent s...
Racial Ideologies in Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent s Narratives 4) Slavery was justified by
racial ideology. Consider three texts, including one that was written by a former slave. How do the
authors either replicate or refute racial ideologies common in the nineteenth century?
I am going to focus on the narratives of Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent as examples of a
refusal of racial ideologies and Harriet Beecher Stowe s Uncle Tom s Cabin as an example of
replicating (although attempting to refute) racial ideologies of the day. Douglass s Narrative and
Brent s Incidents follow them from ignorance to knowledge; knowledge and freedom gained
through their own doing. I think that Stowe is in a way both trying to write an ... Show more content

. . as the author s attempts to enter . . . into Society: by (re )writing him or herself, and thus placing
that self into the tradition of American autobiography, s/he provides proof of American identity (91).
This can be seen in Douglass s constant quest for knowledge. In the beginning, he focuses on his
total ignorance so that throughout the narrative, it is easy for the reader to understand the progress
he has been making. The best example of the mind requiring liberation before the body is Douglass
s fight with Covey.
This man mentally abuses his slaves by making them fear his constant watch. The fear is a direct
result of the threat of punishment if they do not adhere to his strict rules: they will be beat. In
beating his slaves, Covey turns them into just another body; he never sees their mind. Douglass
wants to be move than just another body. He needs to free his mind in order to free his body. In
order to gain his freedom, Douglass must use his body and physically fight Covey. Through this
fight, he frees his mind of the fear of ever being whipped again. Douglass claims that he was never
again what might be called fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards (43).
Through this episode, Douglass proves that first the mind must be liberated, and the body will
eventually (maybe not immediately) follow.
The relationship between the body and

The Basic Characteristics Of Ip V4
Throughout chapters 5 through 8, many topics have been discussed in class and practiced on
lab days. Starting off with chapter 5, OSI Network Layer: various topics are discussed which
include; IP v4, the Network Layer, to routing tables. The basic characteristics of IP v4 are that it
is connectionless, the best effort is unreliable and is unaware of the quality of its job, and it is
also media independent. Time to Live (TTL) is the 8 bit TTL field that describes the maximum
hops that a packet can take before it is considered lost , which means that the packet is
undeliverable. Each time a packet visits a router, the TTL decreases by 1. If the packet reaches a 0
TTL, it is dropped. When a packet is dropped this helps the internet... Show more content on

The routing table is a table that stores information about connected and remote networks, and it has
three features. The three features of a routing table are 1) destination network, 2) next hop and 3)
metric. Packets are unable to be forwarded by the router without a route. If a route that is
representing the destination network is not on the routing table, the packet will not be forwarded,
and instead will be dropped. When the router is forwarding a packet, it uses the default route, which
is used when the network is not represented by any other route in the routing table. On the other
hand, static routing is the route that information can be manually configured on in the router. Static
routes are reliable and the router does not need to use much overhead to process the packets that are
being transferred viz static routing. However the static routes do not update automatically, and they
have a higher continuing administrative cost. Dynamic routing was another routing type that was
taught in chapter 5. Dynamic routing is when routers can also learn about routes automatically from
other routers in the same internetwork Dynamic routing has higher router processing overhead but
little administrative cost after initial setup. The following chapter that was taught was chapter 6,
addressing the Network IPv4. There are three types of communication that were talked about at the
beginning of the chapter, Unicast, Broadcast, and

My Reflection On My Parents Instilled
My parents instilled in me the importance of reading since a very early age. We formed a nightly
routine of reading every night before bed as soon as I started learning the basics of reading. I
enjoyed every moment of this; it was my favorite part of the day. The first book I was able to read
on my own was One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. The feeling of success I had
after this accomplishment is as clear as day and I can still see myself as a five year old beaming
with joy when I could finally read a bookwithout assistance. In grade school, I was never the one
who was passionate about reading. However, when it came time to write a story, I was excited and
even wrote stories on my own. In third grade, my friends and I would write fictional stories
during lunchtime and present them to our teacher after recess. I can still remember the sense of
pride we felt when we saw the surprised and proud looks on our teacher s face. It made us want
to write more and more. But years went on, and I still never formed a fondness for recreational
reading. I ve been assigned more than five books a year in the past; some would catch my
interest, but never enough to pull me in as much as to read in my spare time. There were rare
occasions when I was really pulled into a book that was assigned to me. To this day I do not know
if that was because of the mere thought that I was not willingly reading the book, or just that I did
not have the patience for it. All

Dramaturgical Approach By Erving Goffman
Erving Goffman presented the theory of the dramaturgical approach. In general, it insinuates that
people s daily lives can be perceived as performances in action on a stage. People adjust how they
act depending on the situation or audience that is present. As Goffman (1959) explains, when an
individual enters the presence of others they seek to obtain information on the other people and
incorporate information already known to them. Information about an individual helps to define the
situation and what each personexpects of one another in terms of their behaviour and the way they
present themselves. If the people do not know each other prior to the situation, they can take clues
about one another from their appearance and mannerisms. Assumptions can also be made about
people in certain social settings with the presumption that only certain people will be found there.
Goffman s theory is applicable to modern day life and I will be using the example of a school
classroom to depict this throughout the essay.
The individual putting on the performance yearns for the observers to wholeheartedly believe the
impression being given off. They want their observers to believe that they truly possesses these
attributes and qualities they appear to have. Depending on the ... Show more content on

It focuses on how one presents themselves, how different situations or audiences affect this, and
the different aspects involved in a performance. Goffman implies we all play social roles and
adjust our performances for different people and different situations. People will act a certain
manner, so that they are perceived in a way that meets society s expectations, and however they
personally would like to be seen. This theory is very relevant in today s world, embodied through
the situation of a teacher and their students in a classroom used throughout the

The Refugee Crisis With A Durable And Sustainable Burden...
The failure of the EU to respond to the refugee crisis with a durable and sustainable burden sharing
mechanism has led states to adopt increasingly restrictive asylum policies ultimately aimed at the
deterrence of asylum applicants, rather than their protection. The results have been a race to the
bottom in protection standards for asylum seekers and refugees. National asylum policies assume
that Member States have an interest to contribute to refugee protection and burden sharing
mechanisms. EU cooperation at the supranational level is therefore required to ensure a balance of
efforts between Member States in their asylum policies. Furthermore, the national implementation
of the Dublin system is dependent on domestic political will. The Dublin Regulation discourages
Southern Member States from improving their standards on reception and procedures for asylum
seekers due to their geographical location and lack of mandatory burden sharing mechanisms, and
thus threatens the aim of CEAS. The Dublin system privileges EU countries in the North, which
is the desired destination of many refugees, at the expense of the South, where refugees first
arrive and are forced to remain until their application is processed, which is a timely process in
itself. Geographic location and length of borders place a disproportionate burden of refugees on the
EU s border states. The issues that the Dublin Regulation poses has prompted the reintroduction of
internal border control and checks, as seen

Frogspawn Coral Research Paper
Human beings are always searching for ways to reach a peaceful and tranquil environment. One
great way to reach this is to have a hobby. Most will find that the hobby of saltwater aquariums can

harvesting of coral. In doing so, many gain the skill of patience.
There are many different varieties of coral, each varying in structure. There are Four classes of
species of coral, each has its own method of harvesting. One species of coral is LPS and SPS,

Romeo And Juliet Fate Essay
What s meant to be will always find a way, claimed Trisha Yearwood on the theme of fate. Romeo
and Juliet was undoubtedly one of the most well known romantic tragedies written by William
Shakespeare. It centred around two lovers from feuding families, who take their own lives. Their
deaths ironically created an atmosphere where their love could freely flourish for it reconciled the
two families. We were introduced to the play by a prologue that concretely mentions Fate s
influence on the course of the story. Attempting to antagonize destiny had proven to have been
pointless throughout the tragedy. The greatest land mine prepared by Fate on Romeo and Juliet
was the sudden plague in Mantua which triggered the finishing bombs to... Show more content on

Friar Laurence also tried to counter Fate as he helped stop the early suicides of Romeo and
Juliet in the third act. He advised Romeo and Juliet with well thought out plans to solve their
conflicts resulting from the family feuds. None of which actually ended the way he had wanted
with the exception of his first plan on turning the Montagues and the Capulets rancour to pure
love through the two lovers marriage, although, he did not see their suicides coming into the
equation. When he had noticed that his plans kept backfiring after Romeo s banishment, the
sudden urgency of Juliet s marriage to Paris, and the letter not reaching Romeo, he knew he was
up against A greater power than we [Friar Laurence and Juliet] can contradict . Even the Friar,
himself, acknowledged how much power Fate had. Romeo and Juliet did not wish to die by
their own will, they struggled to keep their hearts beating, however, at every punch thrown at
their destiny, Fate simply swept them off their feet over and over again until it had came to a
point where they had snapped and decided to just end it by killing themselves. These defiance
fuelled by the strong sense of free will being rendered useless simply shows how huge and how
much power Fate holds in the play. This was the same power displayed as Fate was able to pull
out its trap card and lay it down on the battlefield, which had caused everything to crumble down to
dust for Romeo and Juliet. The sudden plague outbreak in

Research Paper On Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet, also known Cretan diet or Mediterranean diet is a practice traditional food
in many countries around the Mediterranean Sea characterized by eating plenty of fruits,
vegetables, cereals and olive oil and a low consumption of meat and dairy products.
Several studies show that the Mediterranean diet can:
reducing mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular disease;
reduce the risk of Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease;
improve the chance of pregnancy during assisted fertilization;
maintaining a healthy brain.
Health Benefits
Its effectiveness is difficult to assess because it is based primarily on observational studies (the
plan is noted for each individual, without anyone trying to change it) and can not be excluded in
this case, a bias in the comparison of several populations. Few interventional studies are of type (the
investigator intentionally alters the habits of a group of patients), but not double blind, this does
not exclude a placebo effect.
Another technique is to compare the future within the same population group following a serious
diet and a group of dropouts. The comparability of these two groups, however, must be carefully
tested.
The studies should be used with caution, because outside the Mediterranean area, people on this ...

At four minutes past midnight, on March 24, 1989 the Exxon Valdez crashed into the Bligh Reef
located in the northeastern part of the Prince William Sound. The ship was loaded with 1,264,155
barrels of oil. Approximately one fifth of the cargo was spilt into the sea, which totaled to 11.2
million gallons. Due to strong northeastern winds the oil could not be contained, leaving the water
into an emulsion that will not burn and is nearly impossible to remove from the surface. Oil
continued to move southwest eventually reaching the Alaskan Peninsula. The Exxon Valdez Oil

On the national level changes were made which heightened environmental awareness as well.
The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was written and passed which raised liability, set up new
prevention measures and a response fund. Exxon was fined millions of dollars as a result of
their negligence. First they were fined $150 million, the largest fine ever for an environmental
fine. Exxon next agreed to a $100 million dollar fine for wildlife damage. Finally in the civil
settlement they agreed to pay $900 million dollars over a 10 year period. By imposing these fines
the government wanted to make sure nothing like this would ever happen again.
The U.S. Coast Guard now monitors all tankers, via satellite as they pass through the Valdez
Narrows, around Bligh Island and as they exit the Prince William Sound at the Hinchinbrook
Entrance. Prior to the spill tankers were only watched as they cruised through the Valdez
Narrows. Two escort ships are now required to follow every tanker and are equipped to assist in
the case of an emergency. Only one escort ship was used before the tragedy. Specially trained
captains with much experience are now aboard ships during the entire voyage through the Sound,
making sure safe navigation practices are used. The debate continues over whether a spill like the
Exxon Valdez could be contained with all these new regulations. However the ability of both
industry and government to respond has been significantly raised during the last ten years as a result

Toni Morrison Victimizers
In the novel A Mercy by Toni Morrison, an award winning novelist and researcher, she suggests
that the characters in the novel are both victims and victimizers. She supports this claim by first
creating a character that have gone through struggles in the past and using their beliefs as a
reason to isolate another person. Then she created a character that had many sorrows and
tragedies in their life and use the grief as a reason to abuse other people. Finally Morrison used a
character to use their hardships of their past to justify the treatment of their children. Morrison s
purpose is to explain where we come from in order to explain our roots and how we interact with
the world, each other, and our pasts. This work is significant because Morrison uses the qualities
of victims and victimizers in the same characters to show that people can be both. According to

Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, it is our thoughts,
emotions, and a personal journal that occasionally comes easier way to communicate what s
inside of the mind. One of Pablo Picasso s most famous artworks and still known worldwide is
The Old Guitarist. Picasso painted this piece of art in the Blue Period that ran from 1901 04.
This specific year is important because the Blue Period of Picasso is when he started painting in
the gloomy shades of blue and blueish green inspired by Picasso s own emotional turmoil and
financial struggle. I would say it was the year where his emotions took over instead of his own
hands, which drove him to the highest limit of creating something impressive. Nonetheless,... Show

The year when he was financially struggling, having no money for his food or a warm place to
abide. On top of that, Picasso had the downside of losing a faithful friend, Carlos Casagemas.
The use of the gloomy shade of blue and blueish green was the only way of verbalizing his
emotions. We see these colors throughout the entire portraits except when he stirred and added a
brown color to the guitar. The brown guitar was an evasion from the harsh reality he was going
through. Human deal with situations in many ways and I believe music was the way Pablo dealt

Children Of Lesser God Analysis
In the movie, Children of Lesser God is about a new teacher instructor named James who is a
speech teacher at a deaf school at New England. He taught at many top schools with his speech
degree by helping deaf student communicate by speaking to one another. Something is different
from James as an instructor because the principle of the deaf school told James to not go beyond
the tradition teacher. Bit James, he did not listen to the principle, his way of teaching is having a
teaching plan. For instance, he would play loud rock music at a classroom so the student can feel
the vibration going through the speaker and have a feel of what the music feels like. Also, he
would teach the students one by one from trying to speak phonetically. The

Companzees Speak Cognitively Using American Sign Language
In Thinking without Language, author Herbert S. Terrace suggested that thinking was still possible
without language. Terrace conducted Project Nim, a research study that was aimed at
understanding whether chimpanzees could actually speak cognitively using American Sign
Language. Next, Terrace stated that Nim could combine words, in the same repeat pattern, which
mimicked the way young children first develop speech. However, Nim was only able to produce
results from imitating his instructor. Nim was unable to move beyond imitation to follow the
standard development of language; but he did show clear thought in processing the learning tasks.
Terrace confirmed his hypothesis by testing monkeys with a series of 7 photos that they had to
place in the correct order by trial and error. Overtime, the monkeys could produce the correct
patterns and showed improvement in using logically thinking. Thus, Terrace s experiment proved
you can still think without language. Commentary: After reading Thinking without... Show more

Russel T Hurlburt (2011) expressed that, unsymbolized thinking is the experience of differentiated
thought that does not include the experience of words (Hurlburt, para. 3). To compare, this
supports Terrace s theory that thinking can occur without language; as Hulburt explains that our
thoughts guide us to find answers and to use other ways to learn the answer (Hurlburt, 2011).
This means that if given a problem, we use our minds to find a way to think through an action to
solve it. Lana and Sarah, in Rumbaugh s and Premack s studies, were able to learn which objects
or lexigrams to use, and in which order, to receive the type of reward they wanted (Terrace, 2011, p.

How Did Winthrop s Beliefs Influence The Development Of...
In 1630, John Winthrop formed his ideas for his ideal settlement, City Upon a Hill. He wrote
down his ideas in a document titled A Modell of Christian Charity (Doc 1). In this document, he
planned ideas for a perfect Puritan society. At the start of this settlement, he became the governor of
it. These ideas and values were an important aspect of the political, economic, and social
development of the Puritansociety in New England. The most important values were community,
religion, and education. These values that the Puritans upheld in Winthrop s society are responsible
for the political, economic, and social development of the New England colonies from the 1630s to

valued religion so much, since the ministers wanted the the knowledge of God to be passed

the knowledge of God down would please God.(Doc 4) The Puritans were known for being
religiously intolerant; they only believed in their religion and did not accept any other. This was
another social impact of the New England colonies. Nathaniel Ward believed that if people were
religiously tolerant they either doubted their religion or were insincere about it(Doc 6). Ward
believed that religious tolerance could start conflict throughout New England. He wanted the state
and church to be together. Nathaniel Ward s statement started controversy. Roger Williams
completely disagreed with Nathaniel Ward s statement. Williams believed that religious tolerance
was a great thing. (Doc 5) Williams wanted others to see his way and join him. A woman named

Nelson Mandela, A Brief History and Impact
MEETING THE GREAT MAN Nelson Mandela 1918 2013 I have fought against white
domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a
democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal
opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal
for which I am prepared to die. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in a royal family of a
tribe in a South African village in Mvezo, Thembu. Ever since he was a child, he would listen to
the resistance war stories from his elders and dreamt with contributing to the cause of liberating his

After a democratic poll, they began preparations for an armed fight, creating The Umkhonto we

belonged to everyone who lived there, and not just for a group of black and white people. Real
leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people. With the name David
Motsomayi, on January 11, 1962, Nelson Mandela left South Africa secretly. He traveled
through Africa and United Kingdom to gain support for the armed battle, but he was detained by
two guards from Howick on August 5 when he was returning from KwaZuu Natal. He had to
complete a 5 year sentence for leaving the country illegally and for promoting strikes among the
people. Even when Mandela was incarcerated, his colleagues were giving the movement pushes;
but on January 1963, the police found an ANC secret hideout in Rivona, where planning
documents for the guerrilla were found; that s why, on that year, Mandela and some colleagues
faced a trial known as the Rivona trial where he was sentenced for the rest of his life. Before
entering jail, he had the opportunity to transmit to their people the integrity behind his actions: I
always expected my life would give me the opportunity to serve my people and make my humble

Leafy Lilly Irrigation System
The Leafy Lilly Irrigation System is a Rube Goldberg machine that waters a plant using a system
of twelve simple machines. This machine is started with five books, used as third class levers,
which are good tools to use when you want to transfer force without the outcome varying from
the original goal that was in mind when building the machine. When the last book is knocked
over, it falls off of a ledge and hits an inclined plane that allows the book to easily travel a greater
distance by letting it use some of its gravitational potential energy. As the book slides to the end of
the inclined plane, it comes into contact with a wheel and axle that has a plow like attachment on

Newton s second law of motion is that the rate of change regarding the momentum of an object is

the zipline and the car are put into motion by the simple machine before it. But after it is put into
motion, the force of gravity pulls it closer to the ground and increases the speed that machine was

Excuses In Everyday Life, By Bernard Roth
Bernard Roth, a Professor at the d. school in California, has an impressively valid outlook as to
why all reasons given are bullshit. Roth provides numerous examples of people who use regularly
use excuses to manage everyday life; however, he also plays the devil s advocate when stating that
excuses may help you in the current situation but will it assist you at all in the long run? In the
second chapter of his book, Roth classifies the use of excuses into several categories; ethically,
logically, and emotionally. Although I understand Roth s beliefs, there are multiple areas I
fundamentally disagree with. Such as, some excuses must be explained no matter what the
circumstances were since the reasoning is important. Roth would rebuttal by saying reasons have
no meaning which in turn goes back to having no excuses. Utilizing an abundance of forms of
thinking, is Roth s strategy when emphasizing his point. He explains to every studentthe three
possible rationalizations for excuses. Once again, he suggests every excuse is bullshit, and has no
place in an individual s life. Excuses ultimately hamper an individual s ability to reach for his or her
dreams. Bernard Roth, author of, The Achievement Habit, stop wishing, start doing and take
control of your life effectively uses Aristotle s rhetorical triangle in chapter two, his argument
contains ethos, pathos, and logos to authenticate the thought that the reasons are bullshit. Roth s

A year before this song was released Kanye West had his famous moment when he interrupted
Taylor Swifts VMA acceptance speech. After that moment he was tortured by the media and
hated by many. The following year he performed this song Runaway at the next VMA s. I
believe it was an apology to women he had hurt and disrespected, Taylor being one of them, and
showed how lonely and vulnerable Kanye is. I think it impacted the way people view Kanye, and
affected a culture of men as he describes as douchbags , and scum bags and how men in society
need to change. It is a Kanye Westsong, so the quality and production of the song is made very

Much nineteenth century verse is portrayed as neoclassical. This was the significant style utilized
consistently. Scholars utilized specific vocabulary, phrase developments, specialized terms, and

It is unfortunate to note that even with the extra two years, students still struggle to persist through
graduation, due to numerous hindering factors. Hence, the issue of college success now lies within
the central realm of scholarly research, with numerous scholars applying previously known
psychological theories to education, including Kurt Lewin s force field analysis model, Abraham

The U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation in 1924. Even though some changes
have affected every aspect of the operations from its early days, the values, professionalism,

remain the same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our borders,
Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent
illegal crossings as early as 1904 (Border Patrol History, web). The agent s efforts were
undertaken only when resources permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, Though
they never totaled more than seventy five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict
the flow of illegal Chinese immigration (Border Patrol History, web). In 1915, Congress approved
a separate group of Mounted Guards. Most rode on horseback, but a few operated cars and boats.
Although these inspectors had broader arrest authority, they still largely pursued Chinese
immigrants trying to avoid the Chinese exclusion laws. The agents were immigrant inspectors,
assigned to inspection stations, and could not watch the border at all times, Texas Rangers were
also often assigned to patrol duties by the state, and their efforts were noted as singularly effective

The Theory Of Corporate Social Responsibility
Historical background of the development of CSR is almost as important as the ongoing
discussion on what CSR is and how and where it should operate. Many scholars argue that these are
not interchangeable and need to be assessed in conjunction with each other. For purposes of this
paper it is pivotal to look into the past to see what stood behind the broadening of companies
accountability beyond the standard agency theory (limited liability of shareholders for the company
s violations or breach and the company s main accountability being towards its shareholders and
investors only) to the stakeholder theory (company s accountability towards a broad range of

research topic that went in no parallel or connection with the idea of a corporate veil, charter
accountability and the sole purpose of any company to bring profits to its shareholders. This
reverts us back to the development of a stakeholder theory that gradually gained its speed in the
1970s . It soon found its implementation in Freeman s management discipline , who promoted
the expansion of firms accountability towards a broader range of stakeholders. One of the
examples of how attitude towards CSR by multinational corporations has changed was raised by
Lee, when he reviewed corporate governance codes and practices of Ford . He used two
instances in the history of corporate actions of Ford with an interval of 80 years in between
them. Keeping in mind the abovementioned Clark s remarks on corporate accountability back in
1916, this becomes even more educational, as it shows a dramatic change in shareholders
perception of their business as a service to the broader society. There, in 1919 Ford was faced
with a lawsuit, as a result of which it agreed to grant Dodge brothers their request to receive
maximum dividends . The respective court decision was an indirect ridicule of Henry

The American Dream In I Hear America Singing By Walt Whitman
During this era the American dream was the notion that a man could create a successful life for
himself and his family. As discussed earlier, America effectively isolated women and African
Americans, therefore they had no way to make a living to support themselves. A prime example
of this would be in the poem I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman. Whitman describes the
sound of America as one of hard work produced by workers. He writes, the carpenter singing his
as he measures his plank or beam (Whitman 3). It illustrates the hard work that Americans put into
their careers, and their willingness to support the nation s economy. No African Americans appear
in the poem, and Whitman describes women working in the house. Once again, the exclusivity of
the nation only allows white males to have a chance of achieving a pleasant, stable life. At this
time, a majority of African Americans remained enslaved across the Nation, which prohibited
them from being able to build any sort of life for themselves. Therefore the American Dream is
not even an option for almost a quarter of the population. How could someone prohibited from
leaving a plantation be able to support themselves and live an acceptable life? For almost all
African Americans the idea was unthinkable until the later half of the 1860 s when the government
abolished slavery. When it comes to women, however, one could say that living the American
dream was possible. Women in America worked in the home cleaning, cooking

the growth of the silverindustry brought as much change socially and culturally as it brought

Documents 3,5,6, 7 and 8 all mention how the economy changed dramatically due to the arrival
and growth of silver as a currency. In document 3, a Ming dynasty court official writes about
how the silver coin is hard to come by because the government is hoarding all of it. They take
silver for taxes but do not redistribute it to the people. He is writing this because he is trying to

family is obviously not doing well financially. He is a court official who most likely has small
influence in the government and writes in hopes of getting the emperor to consider spreading the

expresses a different, but somewhat related view about how silver has become a hindrance to
regular business interactions, because customers can no longer trade items of their own to
purchase goods, they have to go through a lengthy process to pay everything in silver. Document 6
shows a counter point of view about the wealth that the mining of silver has brought to Spain.
Document 7 is a report written to convince the emperor of China that there is much wealth to be
found in foreign trade, because of how much silver some countries will pay for Chinese goods.
Finally, document 8 examines how European countries are able to purchase Asian commodities

Steroids In Baseball Essay
Steroids have taken over the game of baseball and more players are starting to get involved with
them. Steroids are a big part of the Major League today in 2014, yet they entered the game of
baseball through trainer Curtis Wenzlaff in 1992. Players and the game s images are ravaged
when they become caught up in steroids. Some of the best players to ever play the game of
baseball have been caught up in steroids, including Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark
McGwire. Players with this level of skill are supposed to be role models for younger kids, yet
younger kids see that they used steroids and are tempted to use them. When their young,
impressionable minds witness steroids use, naturally kids attempt to imitate their idols. More...

Also, steroids can cause men s testicals to shrink (Mitchell 55). Baseball players who use steroids
are so mentally focused on the positive effects of steroids that they forget to think about the
negative effects on mental health, the liver, the cardiovascular system, and the reproductive
system. The main type of steroids causing all this chaos to the body are called Anabolic steroids.
Anabolic steroids are used the most often in Major League Baseball (MLB). The reasons why
MLB players get caught up in Anabolic steroids is because they have so much pressure on them
to hit home runs, get on base, and entertain. To help them cope with their pressure, they turn to
Anabolic steroids because of the fast gains and positive impacts players experience after
treatment. This is a positive for baseball fans, who have seen an increase in home runs hit; for
example, in just a five year span between 1961 and 1996, there was an increase of nine players
who hit at least forty home runs in just one season. Anabolic steroids also make one s hands
faster and they increase muscle in areas like the pectorals and forearms. When players are going
through a slump and they hear about all of these benefits of Anabolic steroids, they are tempted by
this easy fix. Despite all of these positives, negatives also come with steroid use. Anabolic steroids
can be taken two different ways by injection, which

Prion Disease Essay
Sometimes a scientific discovery shakes the confidence of scientists, making them question whether
they truly understand nature s ground rules. That s exactly what prions have done to scientists
understanding of the ground rules for infectiousdiseases. Prions cause diseases, but they aren t
viruses or bacteria or fungi or parasites. They are simply proteins, and proteins were never thought
to be infectious on their own. Organisms are infectious, proteins are not. Or, at least, they never
used to be. Prions entered the public s consciousness during the mad cow epidemic that hitEngland
in 1986. For decades, however, scientists had searched for unusual, atypical infectious agents that

Sheep and goats with the disease scrapie, which is like mad cow disease, become so uncomfortable
and itchy that they frantically rub up against anything they can, finally scraping off В– hence, the
name of the disease most of their wool and hair. Ultimately, infected prionbloated brain cells die
and release prions into the tissue. These prions then enter, infect, and destroy other brain cells.
And, as clusters of cells die, the brain stops looking like a brain and starts looking more like
Swiss cheese. The medical term for the prion diseases is spongiform encephalopathies, in
acknowledgement that the sick brains are riddled with holes and have taken the form of sponges.
Shepherds and farmers whose sheep had scrapie never seemed to get scrapie themselves. So, for a
long time, scientists assumed that the prions of animals did not cause infections in humans. But,
between 1994 and 1996, 12 people in
England came down with Creutzfeld Jakob disease (CJD), a human prion disease whose
symptoms are not unlike those of the mad cows, and all the victims had eaten beef from cows
suspected of having mad cow disease. In October, 1996, scientists in England reported that the
prions from ten of the British patients were remarkably like those of the mad cows and not like
those of people

Stereotypes Of Dinosaurs
Through excavating in bone beds it has become apparent that dinosaurs were more than singular
animals and followed patterns displayed by many current animal groups when concerning family.
Dinosaurs had ranks within their herds and there where often struggles of territoriality, social
dominance, court ship, and feeding (Tanke Currie, 1998, pg. 181. These insights have been gained
from light tooth scars around the snout and on top of the skulls of many dinosaurs. While family
units where common among herbivores, theropods also had herds, though they where often
smaller in size. Among herbivores herding was often a means of protection for both adults but also
young and un hatched eggs (pg. 167). However, one example of a smaller herd was among

Ivan Boszormenyi Nagy is also a contributor to this therapy (Parrott, III, 2003). This theory is based
on helping maintain a positive family structure and to prevent further emotional damage to the
children or any other person in the family. There are several things that can be done in order for
the help families work through a traumatic experience. When you are counseling a person that has
been subjected to a family prone to alcoholism this child tends to show different ways of
functioning and you have to take that into consideration as to how to proceed. Family therapy is
often encouraged when you are trying to repair a family that has gone through a crisis because
this can show them that they can work together as a team to get past the issue. In most other
therapies, the counseling session has two individuals present, the counselor and the client.
According to PsychologyCampus.com (2004 2008), family systems therapy is based on the idea
that individuals are best understood through assessing the entire family (para. 1). This is where
family therapy differs and can be challenging. There may be two family members in therapy, for
example, in marriage or couples counseling. However, there may be multiple individuals, for
example, a large family who needs family therapy. Either way, the relationship between the
counselor and family members will be

Symbols and Symbolism in Young Goodman Brown Essay
Within the Christian faith, there lies the belief that all mankind are born sinners and through their
faith can seek redemption. This belief can be found in more detail within the Christian text known
as the Bible. An example of this can be found in the Genesis chapter of the Bible which portrays
that even the very first Humans ever to be created in Gods image, named Adam and Eve, defied
God despite his pre emptive warnings not too because of their natural tendency as humans to sin.
Not only can one chose with their own will to disobey God but one s faith can be easily swayed
by the evils of the world therefore sin can forever bind them in chains for eternity. Young Goodman
Brown, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, reveals a similar... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hawthorne uses this quote as an underlying statement that it wasn t just his wife that held him back
from his rendezvous with the Devil, but also his Faith in God. Hawthorne meant for the reader to
make the connection between Goodman s Wife, Faith and Goodman s faith in God for which both
attempt to sway Goodman from following the path the Devil intends for him.
Hawthorne in essence, portrayed Goodman as proof of the nature of evil in man by showing
how easily even a young dedicated Puritan can easily be influenced by a complete stranger. This
stranger was symbolically the Devil among men in this text. Hawthorne begins introducing the
Devil immediately as trying to sway Goodman to follow him on a long journey. By leaving his
wife, Faith to begin the journey, Goodman Brown was symbolically leaving his faith in God and
entering a forsaken ground by following the Devil. The fact that Goodman Brown left with no
regard for his wife Faith s warning, symbolized the lack of regard for his own faith in God and his
fellow human race. This simple disregard that Goodman Brown showed was evidence of the easily
persuaded ability of man to choose sin over good.
The man that Goodman Brown encountered on his journey symbolized the devil in the text which
strongly influenced him to just about give up his faith in God. The Devil disguised as a fellow
traveler (266) tried to influence Goodman Brown by

Security Dilemm Spiral Model
Security Dilemma (spiral model)
What is a security dilemma ? Does it cause wars? Is the security dilemma confined to international
politics?
Introduction
National security is arguably the primary objective of political leaders and yet conflict and war
seems an inevitable aspect of international politics and thus a dominant theme in IR scholarship.
The security dilemma or so called spiral model is frequently used to explain the escalation of
conflict and onset of war in international politics, particularly paralleling the sequence of events
that prompted World War I and the super power arms race during the Cold War
. The question
remains, however, as a theoretical model, does the security dilemma trigger war? Perhaps a more
salient question given the rise in ethnic conflicts and security threats from non state actors since the
Cold War is can the security dilemma literature provide policy relevant guidance of how to deal
with these sub state threats to regional and perhaps international stability?
This response proceeds as follows: First, I define the term security dilemma as well as contextualize
its development within the IR scholarship. Second, I argue, the security dilemma concept coupled
with neorealist theoretical assumptions may indeed perpetuate a hostile international environment,
creating a self fulfilling prophecy effect. Instead, I suggest, the constructivist framework offers
much needed intersubjective understandings and ideational alternatives

Time management determines by the difference between successful and unsuccessful people.
Successful people are able to balance the goals they wish to achieve and duties. And this success
comes from their ability to their time optimally in light of their objectives.
There are two types in our lives:
Type I: A difficult timeorganizing, or managing how much time we spend in our basic needs such
as eating, comfort, family relations and social mission. It is a time cannot use it a lot in what has
been designated a degree of importance to keeping equilibrium in our life.

Sometimes we need rest and break to achieve the goal, so what we do is close the computer, close
the phone, shut down the TV or anything that makes noise. Take a short nap. That gives more
energy for every day. Also sleeping at night is better.
What I understood from these ways is if we want to manage our time well, we have to look for
efficacy and efficiencies.
Efficacy: to perform work properly and reach the desired result.
Efficiency: the performance of work in the right way and getting to the desired result, but with
minimal effort, time and cost. we need to profit and Exploit marginal times, times between
commitments and actions (such as: the use of the car, waiting at the doctor, travel, waiting for
meals, expected visitors). We must know How we spend time, then decompose and identify times
marginal, and develop a plan of operation to benefit them as much as possible. Also do not give up
urgent for the things unnecessary. According to Cameron Chapman bellow are sixteen tips to help
us better managing our time:
1) Get organized.
2) Separate work Space from Everything Else Space.
3) Take advantage of time

Social Media And Its Effects On The World Today Without...
You have to admit it s hard to imagine the world today without the Internet. However, it seems it s
hard just for some us. A recent study from the B2B research firm Clutch, revealed that more than
46% of small businesses in the United States still don t have a website for their company.
Numerous reasons were listed for not having an online presence, for instance, around 12% of small
business representatives said that they use social media networks in place of static site. But the
most popular reason by far was the cost of maintaining a site.
Now, while starting and maintaining a website will definitely cost you, in reality, you don t have to
spend a ton of money in order to have a fully functional, modern site and keep up with the
competition. On the other hand, there are some things you cannot ignore if you want to save as
much money as you can, and unfortunately, one of the biggest issues many companies don t pay
much attention is cybersecurity. These days, hackers and other cyber criminals are pocketing a
staggering amount of data and money from small business around the globe.
The State of Cybersecurity
When you consider the costs that companies suffering as a result of cybercrime crime wave is an
understatement to say the least, as a matter of fact, epidemic is more like it. Just consider this,

Essay On College Stakeholders
The key stakeholders of education include traditional four year non profit universities/colleges and

employers of students who graduate college. The main alignment between non profit universities

increase in faculty quality, increase in student population, increase in prestige, and thus
consequently an increase in revenues. All types of colleges are trying to increase their endowment

The companies give loans to students because of the high cost of tuition and in doing so, they also
charge a high interest rate. Students are then stuck in a difficult situation because they can either
deny the loan, thus denying their college education, or they can take the high interest loan, and be
burdened in debt, and receive their college education. Most students usually decide to take the
loan because of the policy of employers. Employers of students who graduate college align with
non profit colleges, for profit colleges, and government funding agencies with the idea of having
a higher number of students attending colleges. These employers want to hire people who are
highly skilled in their respective fields and want people who can apply their skills well in a
corporate setting. These employer institute policies such as requiring a minimum degree to apply
for a job position and offering internships to only college students, making it almost impossible for

##torical Analysis Of Maya Angelou s The Fight She Fought
The Fight She Fought Ariel Worrell Wilkes Community College The Fight She Fought Maya
Angelou s speech (August 31, 2008) at Coretta Scott King s funeral was very successful. She
drivingly outlined the issues that Coretta Scott King fought for throughout her life, Angelou did
so in a way that allowed those listening to feel connected to King. Angelou makes it clear that
King s life was one of great importance. She delivered the information in a relevant and
important way. Her use of relevancy, audience connections, and humor allowed her to deliver
the eulogy meaningfully. Audience Connection is essential when delivering a speech, Angelou
mastered the technique as seen in this speech. Angelou (2008) opens the Eulogy with a popular
hymnal, I open my mouth to the Lord and I won t turn back, no. I will go, I shall go. I ll see
what the end is gonna be. . This allowed her to make a connection with the audience. Many
people knew this hymnal; therefore, they felt as if she is one of them. Angelou (2008) went on to
say Those of us who gather here, principalities, presidents, senators, those of us who run great
companies, who know something about being parents, who know something about being
preachers and teachers those of us.. . Those of us referred to everyone in the audience, Angelou
(2008) was including everyone and in doing so she was making an audience connection. Angelou
(2008) then said we owe something from this minute on; so that this gathering is not just another
footnote on the pages of history. We owe something. . No one wants to believe that their actions
will be forgotten. By this point in the speech Angelou had already made an audience connection
and by doing so has allowed for a call to action. This call to action is a very important part of the
speech because it developed relevancy in a way that was consequential. One tool that Angelou used
while giving the eulogy was relevancy. Following the hymnal, Angelou (2008) begins by saying In
the midst of national tumult, in the medium of international violent uproar.. Violent uproar is all
around, which makes this quote from the speech incredibly relevant. The entire Eulogy by

T.S.Eliot wrote Prufrock poem six years before its publication in the Egoist 1917. From the first

himself to nourish such rich observations from his abundant experience; Mathiessen describes it as
Prufrock seems to spring from Eliot s detached super cultivated fastidious young man from Harvard;

Despite the fact that T.S.Eliot has called for the impersonality of poetry yet, all the assets in this

Something that is not there is not there. A certain author named Barry Lyga experienced this. After writing a book called Boy Toy about a 18 year old boy who deals with memories of being sexually abused by a teacher when he was only twelve and later with that same teacher getting out of jail early, Barry was expecting some backlash. • 4. Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey is a novel that features vibrant character development but the biggest development is that which occurs in Catherine Morland. Catherine s character nearly develops in all components of her being and she is able to evolve from the unorthodox heroine that she is initially described as. In the novel, Catherine starts out as an incredibly naГЇve and inexperienced girl who confuses all facets of the real world as the plot in a Gothic novel. Catherine develops as a characterthrough her social interactions with those around her as it helps her gain experience with how to correctly perceive the world. With her newly gained experience of her surroundings, Catherine develops and is able to see the real world through a social lens rather than her own subjective lens or that of a Gothic lens. Catherine s growth is evident in the very first line of the novel as it states No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine. Her situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and disposition, were all equally against her (37). Catherine s lowly heroine figure is made known instantly so that her development is much more apparent at the end of the novel. From the start of the novel Catherine is not a typical heroine, she is unorthodox in all facets of her life including the status of her parents. Catherine is initially also an incredibly naive character and this fuels her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Racial Ideologies in Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent s... Racial Ideologies in Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent s Narratives 4) Slavery was justified by racial ideology. Consider three texts, including one that was written by a former slave. How do the authors either replicate or refute racial ideologies common in the nineteenth century? I am going to focus on the narratives of Frederick Douglass and Linda Brent as examples of a refusal of racial ideologies and Harriet Beecher Stowe s Uncle Tom s Cabin as an example of replicating (although attempting to refute) racial ideologies of the day. Douglass s Narrative and Brent s Incidents follow them from ignorance to knowledge; knowledge and freedom gained through their own doing. I think that Stowe is in a way both trying to write an ... This can be seen in Douglass s constant quest for knowledge. In the beginning, he focuses on his total ignorance so that throughout the narrative, it is easy for the reader to understand the progress he has been making. The best example of the mind requiring liberation before the body is Douglass s fight with Covey. This man mentally abuses his slaves by making them fear his constant watch. The fear is a direct result of the threat of punishment if they do not adhere to his strict rules: they will be beat. In beating his slaves, Covey turns them into just another body; he never sees their mind. Douglass wants to be move than just another body. He needs to free his mind in order to free his body. In order to gain his freedom, Douglass must use his body and physically fight Covey. Through this fight, he frees his mind of the fear of ever being whipped again. Douglass claims that he was never again what might be called fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards (43). Through this episode, Douglass proves that first the mind must be liberated, and the body will eventually (maybe not immediately) follow. The relationship between the body and ... • 7. The Basic Characteristics Of Ip V4 Throughout chapters 5 through 8, many topics have been discussed in class and practiced on lab days. Starting off with chapter 5, OSI Network Layer: various topics are discussed which include; IP v4, the Network Layer, to routing tables. The basic characteristics of IP v4 are that it is connectionless, the best effort is unreliable and is unaware of the quality of its job, and it is also media independent. Time to Live (TTL) is the 8 bit TTL field that describes the maximum hops that a packet can take before it is considered lost , which means that the packet is undeliverable. Each time a packet visits a router, the TTL decreases by 1. If the packet reaches a 0 TTL, it is dropped. When a packet is dropped this helps the internet... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The routing table is a table that stores information about connected and remote networks, and it has three features. The three features of a routing table are 1) destination network, 2) next hop and 3) metric. Packets are unable to be forwarded by the router without a route. If a route that is representing the destination network is not on the routing table, the packet will not be forwarded, and instead will be dropped. When the router is forwarding a packet, it uses the default route, which is used when the network is not represented by any other route in the routing table. On the other hand, static routing is the route that information can be manually configured on in the router. Static routes are reliable and the router does not need to use much overhead to process the packets that are being transferred viz static routing. However the static routes do not update automatically, and they have a higher continuing administrative cost. Dynamic routing was another routing type that was taught in chapter 5. Dynamic routing is when routers can also learn about routes automatically from other routers in the same internetwork Dynamic routing has higher router processing overhead but little administrative cost after initial setup. • 8. My Reflection On My Parents Instilled My parents instilled in me the importance of reading since a very early age. We formed a nightly routine of reading every night before bed as soon as I started learning the basics of reading. I enjoyed every moment of this; it was my favorite part of the day. The first book I was able to read on my own was One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. The feeling of success I had after this accomplishment is as clear as day and I can still see myself as a five year old beaming with joy when I could finally read a bookwithout assistance. In grade school, I was never the one who was passionate about reading. However, when it came time to write a story, I was excited and even wrote stories on my own. In third grade, my friends and I would write fictional stories during lunchtime and present them to our teacher after recess. I can still remember the sense of pride we felt when we saw the surprised and proud looks on our teacher s face. It made us want to write more and more. But years went on, and I still never formed a fondness for recreational reading. I ve been assigned more than five books a year in the past; some would catch my interest, but never enough to pull me in as much as to read in my spare time. There were rare occasions when I was really pulled into a book that was assigned to me. To this day I do not know if that was because of the mere thought that I was not willingly reading the book, or just that I did not have the patience for it. All ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Dramaturgical Approach By Erving Goffman Erving Goffman presented the theory of the dramaturgical approach. In general, it insinuates that people s daily lives can be perceived as performances in action on a stage. People adjust how they act depending on the situation or audience that is present. As Goffman (1959) explains, when an individual enters the presence of others they seek to obtain information on the other people and incorporate information already known to them. Information about an individual helps to define the situation and what each personexpects of one another in terms of their behaviour and the way they present themselves. If the people do not know each other prior to the situation, they can take clues about one another from their appearance and mannerisms. Assumptions can also be made about people in certain social settings with the presumption that only certain people will be found there. Goffman s theory is applicable to modern day life and I will be using the example of a school classroom to depict this throughout the essay. The individual putting on the performance yearns for the observers to wholeheartedly believe the impression being given off. They want their observers to believe that they truly possesses these attributes and qualities they appear to have. Depending on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 10. The Refugee Crisis With A Durable And Sustainable Burden... The failure of the EU to respond to the refugee crisis with a durable and sustainable burden sharing mechanism has led states to adopt increasingly restrictive asylum policies ultimately aimed at the deterrence of asylum applicants, rather than their protection. The results have been a race to the bottom in protection standards for asylum seekers and refugees. National asylum policies assume that Member States have an interest to contribute to refugee protection and burden sharing mechanisms. EU cooperation at the supranational level is therefore required to ensure a balance of efforts between Member States in their asylum policies. Furthermore, the national implementation of the Dublin system is dependent on domestic political will. The Dublin Regulation discourages Southern Member States from improving their standards on reception and procedures for asylum seekers due to their geographical location and lack of mandatory burden sharing mechanisms, and thus threatens the aim of CEAS. The Dublin system privileges EU countries in the North, which is the desired destination of many refugees, at the expense of the South, where refugees first arrive and are forced to remain until their application is processed, which is a timely process in itself. Geographic location and length of borders place a disproportionate burden of refugees on the EU s border states. The issues that the Dublin Regulation poses has prompted the reintroduction of internal border control and checks, as seen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Romeo and Juliet was undoubtedly one of the most well known romantic tragedies written by William Shakespeare. It centred around two lovers from feuding families, who take their own lives. Their deaths ironically created an atmosphere where their love could freely flourish for it reconciled the two families. We were introduced to the play by a prologue that concretely mentions Fate s influence on the course of the story. He advised Romeo and Juliet with well thought out plans to solve their conflicts resulting from the family feuds. Research Paper On Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean diet, also known Cretan diet or Mediterranean diet is a practice traditional food in many countries around the Mediterranean Sea characterized by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, cereals and olive oil and a low consumption of meat and dairy products. Several studies show that the Mediterranean diet can: reducing mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular disease; reduce the risk of Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease; improve the chance of pregnancy during assisted fertilization; maintaining a healthy brain. Health Benefits Its effectiveness is difficult to assess because it is based primarily on observational studies (the plan is noted for each individual, without anyone trying to change it) and can not be excluded in this case, a bias in the comparison of several populations. Few interventional studies are of type (the investigator intentionally alters the habits of a group of patients), but not double blind, this does not exclude a placebo effect. Another technique is to compare the future within the same population group following a serious diet and a group of dropouts. The comparability of these two groups, however, must be carefully tested. The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was written and passed which raised liability, set up new prevention measures and a response fund. Exxon was fined millions of dollars as a result of their negligence. First they were fined $150 million, the largest fine ever for an environmental fine. Exxon next agreed to a $100 million dollar fine for wildlife damage. Finally in the civil settlement they agreed to pay $900 million dollars over a 10 year period. By imposing these fines the government wanted to make sure nothing like this would ever happen again. The U.S. Coast Guard now monitors all tankers, via satellite as they pass through the Valdez Narrows, around Bligh Island and as they exit the Prince William Sound at the Hinchinbrook Entrance. Prior to the spill tankers were only watched as they cruised through the Valdez Narrows. Two escort ships are now required to follow every tanker and are equipped to assist in the case of an emergency. Only one escort ship was used before the tragedy. Specially trained captains with much experience are now aboard ships during the entire voyage through the Sound, making sure safe navigation practices are used. • 15. Toni Morrison Victimizers In the novel A Mercy by Toni Morrison, an award winning novelist and researcher, she suggests that the characters in the novel are both victims and victimizers. She supports this claim by first creating a character that have gone through struggles in the past and using their beliefs as a reason to isolate another person. Then she created a character that had many sorrows and tragedies in their life and use the grief as a reason to abuse other people. Finally Morrison used a character to use their hardships of their past to justify the treatment of their children. Morrison s purpose is to explain where we come from in order to explain our roots and how we interact with the world, each other, and our pasts. This work is significant because Morrison uses the qualities of victims and victimizers in the same characters to show that people can be both. Terrace conducted Project Nim, a research study that was aimed at understanding whether chimpanzees could actually speak cognitively using American Sign Language. Next, Terrace stated that Nim could combine words, in the same repeat pattern, which mimicked the way young children first develop speech. However, Nim was only able to produce results from imitating his instructor. Nim was unable to move beyond imitation to follow the standard development of language; but he did show clear thought in processing the learning tasks. Terrace confirmed his hypothesis by testing monkeys with a series of 7 photos that they had to place in the correct order by trial and error. Overtime, the monkeys could produce the correct patterns and showed improvement in using logically thinking. Thus, Terrace s experiment proved you can still think without language. People don t realize how important any kind of law enforcement is, until the day that they need assistance comes. I don t take our men and women who protect us Americans; it is something that not everyone can say that they have. Even though some changes have affected every aspect of the operations from its early days, the values, professionalism, honor, integrity, and respect helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our borders, Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent illegal crossings as early as 1904 (Border Patrol History, web). The agent s efforts were undertaken only when resources permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, Though they never totaled more than seventy five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict the flow of illegal Chinese immigration (Border Patrol History, web). In 1915, Congress approved a separate group of Mounted Guards. Most rode on horseback, but a few operated cars and boats. Although these inspectors had broader arrest authority, they still largely pursued Chinese immigrants trying to avoid the Chinese exclusion laws. The agents were immigrant inspectors, assigned to inspection stations, and could not watch the border at all times, Texas Rangers were also often assigned to patrol duties by the state, and their efforts were noted as singularly effective (Border Patrol History, web). The Theory Of Corporate Social Responsibility Historical background of the development of CSR is almost as important as the ongoing discussion on what CSR is and how and where it should operate. Many scholars argue that these are not interchangeable and need to be assessed in conjunction with each other. For purposes of this paper it is pivotal to look into the past to see what stood behind the broadening of companies accountability beyond the standard agency theory (limited liability of shareholders for the company s violations or breach and the company s main accountability being towards its shareholders and investors only) to the stakeholder theory (company s accountability towards a broad range of stakeholders, including employees, environment and local communities). This at the time was widely opposed by proponents of corporate isolation as a highly irrelevant research topic that went in no parallel or connection with the idea of a corporate veil, charter accountability and the sole purpose of any company to bring profits to its shareholders. It soon found its implementation in Freeman s management discipline , who promoted the expansion of firms accountability towards a broader range of stakeholders. One of the examples of how attitude towards CSR by multinational corporations has changed was raised by Lee, when he reviewed corporate governance codes and practices of Ford . He used two instances in the history of corporate actions of Ford with an interval of 80 years in between them. Keeping in mind the abovementioned Clark s remarks on corporate accountability back in 1916, this becomes even more educational, as it shows a dramatic change in shareholders perception of their business as a service to the broader society. There, in 1919 Ford was faced with a lawsuit, as a result of which it agreed to grant Dodge brothers their request to receive maximum dividends . • 36. The American Dream In I Hear America Singing By Walt Whitman During this era the American dream was the notion that a man could create a successful life for himself and his family. As discussed earlier, America effectively isolated women and African Americans, therefore they had no way to make a living to support themselves. A prime example of this would be in the poem I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman. Whitman describes the sound of America as one of hard work produced by workers. He writes, the carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam (Whitman 3). It illustrates the hard work that Americans put into their careers, and their willingness to support the nation s economy. No African Americans appear in the poem, and Whitman describes women working in the house. Once again, the exclusivity of the nation only allows white males to have a chance of achieving a pleasant, stable life. At this time, a majority of African Americans remained enslaved across the Nation, which prohibited them from being able to build any sort of life for themselves. Therefore the American Dream is not even an option for almost a quarter of the population. How could someone prohibited from leaving a plantation be able to support themselves and live an acceptable life? For almost all African Americans the idea was unthinkable until the later half of the 1860 s when the government abolished slavery. When it comes to women, however, one could say that living the American dream was possible. Women in America worked in the home cleaning, cooking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Baseball players who use steroids are so mentally focused on the positive effects of steroids that they forget to think about the negative effects on mental health, the liver, the cardiovascular system, and the reproductive system. The main type of steroids causing all this chaos to the body are called Anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are used the most often in Major League Baseball (MLB). The reasons why MLB players get caught up in Anabolic steroids is because they have so much pressure on them to hit home runs, get on base, and entertain. To help them cope with their pressure, they turn to Anabolic steroids because of the fast gains and positive impacts players experience after treatment. This is a positive for baseball fans, who have seen an increase in home runs hit; for example, in just a five year span between 1961 and 1996, there was an increase of nine players who hit at least forty home runs in just one season. Anabolic steroids also make one s hands faster and they increase muscle in areas like the pectorals and forearms. Hawthorne in essence, portrayed Goodman as proof of the nature of evil in man by showing how easily even a young dedicated Puritan can easily be influenced by a complete stranger. This stranger was symbolically the Devil among men in this text. Hawthorne begins introducing the Devil immediately as trying to sway Goodman to follow him on a long journey. Introduction National security is arguably the primary objective of political leaders and yet conflict and war seems an inevitable aspect of international politics and thus a dominant theme in IR scholarship. The security dilemma or so called spiral model is frequently used to explain the escalation of conflict and onset of war in international politics, particularly paralleling the sequence of events that prompted World War I and the super power arms race during the Cold War . The question remains, however, as a theoretical model, does the security dilemma trigger war? Perhaps a more salient question given the rise in ethnic conflicts and security threats from non state actors since the Cold War is can the security dilemma literature provide policy relevant guidance of how to deal with these sub state threats to regional and perhaps international stability? This response proceeds as follows: First, I define the term security dilemma as well as contextualize its development within the IR scholarship. Second, I argue, the security dilemma concept coupled with neorealist theoretical assumptions may indeed perpetuate a hostile international environment, creating a self fulfilling prophecy effect. • 52. T. S. Eliot Prufrock Research Paper T.S.Eliot wrote Prufrock poem six years before its publication in the Egoist 1917. It claims to provide strong contradictory views that can be used in setting the context of the debate. The flaws present in experimentation and obvious intention of generating publicity can be elaborated in assessing key elements of the controversy. B. Hammond, R. Dudek, J. Lemen, M. Nemeth. As the strain of maize had not been adopted worldwide it can be assumed that the authors were motivated publish data confirming the safety of the product. It thoroughly documents the study s methodology and references a wide range of literature. A large number of test subjects were used in each group. Rigorous results are shown and are clear and easy to interpret. The paper claims to have found minimal changes in body weight, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
