Sociological Approach To Deviance Essay
Exploration into the social world embarks upon the various methods and functions that are
responsible for constructing the concise understandings of sociology. The concept of deviance
configures into the sociological outlook through the emancipation of social control. Hence, the
factors associated with deviant objectives immerse among the ways in which sociologyis conducted.
The enormity of sociological concepts happens to be broken down into three definite approaches,
which allows the fundamentals to be processed via perspective. Deviance, then can be explained
within these methods to procure the effects that each form has on social contexts. Therefore, the
approaches to sociology and the forms of deviance determine significant elements in the societal
atmosphere.
As sociologists divulge into the complexities of their studies, there engages a pattern of similarities
among differing areas of sociology. By close examination of the repetitive patterns, a specific
method evolves for researching and understanding that category of societal contexts. Therefore, an
evolution of three different approaches were conducted in order to achieve the extent of
information available in sociology. Strategic methods allowed multiple perspectives to examine the
same content while reaching various objectives, hence acquiring numerous solutions to a singular
issue. With the availability of a range of solutions came forth the sociological approaches: Positivist

Battleship Potemkin Essay
Editing manipulates the audience s point of view of the story. Different cuts can delineate the plot
and the meaning of the images distinctively. Battleship Potemkin, directed by Sergei Eisenstein was
the example of how editing created emotions to the viewers in the theatre. The editing made the
sequence into a lesson of how the Soviet Unionauthority was pressuring the public with complete
dominance of violence. Battleship Potemkin is a movie produced by Eisenstein in 1925. A film
about the Soviet Union soldiers life on the battleship and how they disobey their authoritative
generals. In addition, how they are welcomed by their families and the people, but get turned down
by the governmental army by shooting down the crowd from the stairs. Therefore, this story was
expressed by the cuts from frame to frame with sensitivity and anguish feelings. The sequence will
be analyzed is when the soldiers return from their battleship and finally meeting their family and
friends in Russia. However, the government... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scene was a cut of discontinuity. The scene used discontinuity editing to show the woman s
facial expression to demonstrate the pain of being shot. This made the crowd trying to escape
from the gunfires. The escape was first shot in a medium shot, which creates a clear image of
people running down the stairs. Along with some long shots of the entire crowd deserting, shows
how terrifying the firearms have impacted the innocent people on the stairs. Different angles of the
images were cut alternatively to increase the tension of how communist authorities had been
constraining the people from their rights to gather around. Additionally, Eisenstein included some
close up shots to give the image of people dying and kids sitting in the middle of the dead people.
The scene then jump cuts to the soldiers in white uniforms walking down the stairs roll by roll,

8.What are the main problems for MF in 1980?
Worldwide demand for farm equipment at depression level
1.5 bln dollar Debt outstanding with 150 banks around the world causing default in beginning in
1981 (and potential bankruptcy)
International Financial Press reporting possible assistance of Canadian Government
9.What alternatives were available to MF (in 1980)?
Bankruptcy
Restructuring with a plan of debt decrease
Selling assets eg Perkins
10.As a financial advisor what would you recommend (numbers based argumentation)?
Due to steady revenue growth (22% growth 1975 1980) even in difficult financial markets we
believe that the business is viable and can be recovered with a strict restructuring program.
Since Massey s stock price has dropped rapidly over the years, issuing new equity is not an
attractive option with the low stock prices. Obviously increasing debt is not an option either so
the only alternatives for Massey to finance it s business going forward is to either find savings
from it s Balance sheet and income statement or to sell it s assets. In below we discuss some
opportunities we ve identified in Massey s financials.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder ( Copd )
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) is a progressive lung diseases mainly
characterized as having emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is one of the major cause of
death and disability in the US.1 In 2011, it was the third leading cause of death in the US.
Prevalence of COPD varies by state and was found to be 6.3% (nearly 15 million) amongst the
US adults. Despite such high prevalence, it remains undiagnosed or untreated in nearly half of
the population.3 Prevalence rate is higher among people over 65 years old, among females, and
among non Hispanic white population.3 It s one of the major driver for avoidable healthcare
costs. It causes long term disability, early deaths and is an important issue affecting employee
health and work productivity. In 2010, the estimated direct healthcare costs by the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood institute was $29.5 billion, where $13.2 billion accounted for hospital care
costs, $5.5 billion were for physician services and $5.8 billion were for prescription drugs. The
indirect cost estimated due to COPD was around $20 billion, and the number of productivity days
lost due to suffering from COPD was higher than any other chronic conditions. ,
Several risk factors that are responsible for the development and progression of this disease
includes tobacco smoke, air pollutants, occupational dusts and chemicals, genetics, history of
childhood respiratory infections, socio economic status and exposure to second hand smoke (SHS). ,

Explain Why Some Presenters Avoid Eye Contact
Why do some presenters avoid eye contact? How does that make you feel as an audience member?
Some presenters avoid making eye contact during their presentation because of the following
reasons:
Presenters who don t know their content avoid eye contact because they lack confidence that they
can deliver their speech successfully. They feel nervous for not being fully prepared and any
negative reaction from the audience will make them feel more uneasy.
Presenters who memorize their presentation avoid eye contact because they don t like to see any
negative expressions from the audience that might make them lose focus and forget what they are
about to say. Staring at the ceiling or wall helps them to concentrate and remembers what they need

Similarities Between Christianity And Judaism
There are hundreds or even thousands different religions allover the world, but only several of them
are global. Two of them, Christioanity and Judaism, have its believers on each continent, and during
its history experienced persecutions from others. Despite, there are a lot of differences between
these religions, Christianityand Judaism are similar.
Both Christianity and Judaism are monotheistic. It means that believers of these religions believe in
one God who is a creator of the world. Christians have the Holly Bible, which is a book that
describes, a history of the religion, prophecies, and the rules of life. Jews, similarly, have their holly

to keep them entertained and talk to them as much as possible when they are in the chair so their
mind isn t focused on the procedure, said U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Foley, the

Prison Reform in the United States of America
Prison Reform in The United States of America It is said that no one truly knows a nation until
one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens,
but its lowest ones (Nelson Mandela, 1994). The United States of America has more people
behind bars than any other country on the planet. The prisons are at over double capacity. It cost a
lot of money to house prisoners each year. A large number of the prisoners are there because of
drug related offenses. There are prisoners who have been sent to prisonfor life for marijuana related
drug offenses. Many prisoners have been exonerated after spending many years behind bars due to
the corruption in our legal system. 32 States in United States of... Show more content on

The perplexing thing is that many of these States are willing to spend vast amounts of money to
house prisoners for many years but will spend less than half on education. Because over a quarter of
the prisoners incarcerated are there from drug related offenses, then it seems like the states could
save a lot of money if drug policies were geared towards rehabilitation instead of incarceration.
Overall they would be able to save billions of dollars. The demographics of the prison population in
America are very discouraging with a very high unbalanced proportion of the prison population
being African American. Although approximately 12% to 13% of the American population is
African American, African Americans make up over 40% of the prison population. This number is
so unusually disproportionate that many critics believe that the African American community is
judged harsher than it would the Hispanics or the Caucasians. The same critics also believe that it
is because many of the policies related to incarceration were designed specifically to target the
African American community. Mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses were directly
targeted towards these communities. Much of the time drug enforcement officers go into the
African American communities and set up sting operations that entrap

Expectancy Violation Theory
Expectancy Violation Theory Introduction Expectancy violations exert significance on people s
interaction patterns, on their impressions of one another, and on the outcomes of their interactions
(Burgoon 1993:40). In other words, Judee Burgoon, founder of the expectancy violation theory,
concluded from various experiments that people evaluate communication with others in a negative
or positive regard, based on their expectation of the interaction and their opinion of the
communicator. When people do not act in accordance with ones expectations, one resorts to
evaluating their communication behavior, be it verbal or non verbal as well as how this behavior
makes one feel. The following essay will further explore and explain the... Show more content on

Candice and I had been friends for about three years before she and my brother started dating. So
obviously when they did start dating, I was very enthusiastic about their relationship. They dated
for about 7 months and even made plans to move to Johannesburg together. This is where I stay
so I was very excited. Unfortunately things did not quite work out as planned. My brother
Khalid, moved to Johannesburg two months before Candice did and in that time he met
someone else. Her name is Nishad. As a result of meeting Nishad, the relationship between him
and Candice fell apart. This left my friend broken hearted. Obviously I was furious about the
whole situation and vowed that I would not pursue any form of a relationship and stick to a
maximum of polite conversation with Nishad. So even before I met her, I decided I did not like
her, for the simple reason that she was the reason my friend Candice was now broken hearted
and alone in Johannesburg. When I did finally meet Nishad I was cold and distant and I almost
instantly made up my mind that she was not right for my brother. This I quickly made clear to
both of them with my disapproving looks and unsociable attitude. Nishad is a very loud outgoing
person so even though I was cold and distant, this did not stop her from trying to get closer to me
and in a way forced me to converse with her on numerous occasions which made me very

Scopophilia
Literature review.
The media has changed significantly over the past decades. Technology has modified our abilities
to expand our communication network, and it allows companies to spread their commercials over
many different continents. Research done by Roberts (1993) shows that adolescent and children
are often very influenced by media that involves sexual or violent conduct. This research is based
on media involving children and adolescents, however this does not eliminate the effect media has
on adults (Singer Singer, 2001, p. 269).
Over the past decades, media has constructed and manipulated women into being the main form of
sexual pleasure for the male viewer. Pleasure in looking, scopophilia, is one of many possible types

The woman can merely be a narcissistic projection that comes from the male, unconsciously.
Robert J. Stoller stated that Fetishizing is the norm of males, not for females , (Valerie Steel,
1996) Meaning that females are not interested in body parts and sexy outfits in the same way men
are. Fetishistic imagery is divided into three different types: the first is a woman with a phallic
substitute, secondly, a woman without a phallus usually intimidated or mocked by women with a
phallus and last, a woman as the phallus.
In fetishistic imagery, the true focus is always the phallus, and not the woman itself. Men attain
most pleasure from viewing voyeurism and fetishistic imagery because the men starts to feel more
control and power of their own lives because the men identify themselves with the male protagonist.
(Gaines, 1990.)
Stated in Fetish: Fashion, Sex Power (Valerie Steel, 1996), many feminists interpret fetish as a
symptom of patriarchy and capitalism, where the fetishist is always male and the female becomes
the fetish itself, the perfect object. Fetishism is described as glorifying by some, however others
would describe it as something negative, where the woman s desire has disappeared.
Women in films are usually portrayed as dependent to the male characters and it would therefor not
be very likely that females would experience pleasure from looking at a female character that is
influenced and dependent of the male characters, however studies show that women

Universal Studios Presents The 1960 Film Psycho
Universal Studios presents the 1960 film Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock, adapted from the Robert
Bloch novel by Joseph Stephano, and scored by Bernard Hermann. The film stars Anthony
Perkins, Vera Miles, Janet Leigh, and a very creepy house. This film falling under the horror
genre was based loosely on the novel of the same name which drew inspiration from real life
serial killer Ed Gein, who has been the motivation for two other popular movies, The Silence of the
Lambs and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre . The budget for Psychoran under one million dollars and
was the last film on Alfred Hitchcocks contract with Universal. The film was shot entirely on set at
Universal studios except for an early shot of Marion Crane s (Janet Leigh) vehicle parked on the
side of the road when she was too tired to continue driving, as well as the car dealership. Due to
the budget constraints the films crew were made up of mostly people who were working on the,
Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show. The film is about a man named Norman Bates, who
runs a motel owned by his family. Norman is a victim of his ill mothers love. His mother becomes
violent when Norman s attention has been detracted from her needs. This film is a study of
character, suspense, and storytelling; all reasons this film is considered an American classic. This
film is unique due to several factors: its presentation, it contained two different point of views (with

Set up against the rampant industrialization of the 18th century, Charles Dickens classic novella A
Christmas Carol endorses the notion that all people have a responsibility to ensure the safety and

whom are less fortunate and other vital traits such as charity, generosity and simply caring for

The Bible Is Full Of Wisdom And Folly
The Bible is full of wisdom and folly. This essay will evaluate the concepts of diligent people in
Hebrew wisdom being wise, while the lazy person is a fool. The major part of the essay will
concentrate in Proverbs, but we will review some scriptures from Ecclesiastes. Proverbs was
written by Solomon, and he wrote it out of concern for his children. Ecclesiastes is said to have
been written by Solomon, but this is not certain. Both books can be used by all for guidance,
regardless of their age. Proverbs in general concentrates on moral virtues, and the opposite, their
vices. The main theme of the book is the fear of the Lord, as it is seen fourteen times in Proverbs.
Ecclesiastes main theme is life without God is empty, pointlessness and without meaning. There are
a lot of contrasting chapters and verses comparing the differences between being wise and foolish,
the wicked and righteous and the lazy and hardworking. Both books mainly concentrate on the
contrasts between evil and good and foolishness and wisdom. So, let s look at some verses and
relate the concepts, describe and compare them to being diligent (wise) or laziness (foolish).
In Proverbs 15:19 it says The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the
upright is a level highway (ESV). This saying corroborates the points of Proverbs concerning the
directives that diligence is the way of the wise and the path with less resistance. But the path of
laziness is foolishness and filled with trouble,

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS Essay Question: Books that engage directly with
contemporary concerns and issues will always involve a reader Through the study of the novel The
Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, it is clear that the concerns and issues, as well as the
style and structure of a text, are what determines the reader s involvement. In addition, the issues of
the past (particularly those about war) still remain concerns today. The issues amplified within The

consequences, and the withholding of information from the youthful and innocent which can create
dangerous situations. Along with these, is the main issue of the... Show more content on

Because she too is alone at Auschwitz she replaces her friends and companions with dolls,

with Shmuel, a Jew from the other side of the fence, which in turn leads to a horrific ending. This
ending captures the reader because of the intensity and power in how it is written. If John Boyne
had narrated the story in any other way, the effect would not have been quite so horrific and
potent. This along with the main concern of the book captures the reader s attention, encouraging
them to read on. A major concern of World War Two which remains relevant to wars today is man

Symbolism In The Talented Mr. Ripley By Patricia Highsmith
The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, set in 1950s in a somewhat vibrant, jazz
influenced Italy, gives a vivid insight into the mind of a small time conman turned psychopath. It
also provides us with the central concepts of amorality, paranoia and how that survival and greed
for money can turn almost ordinary people uncaring and self indulgent. Highsmith s use of third
person narrative is an effective technique and is used to expand on the thesis of morality in the
novel . Tom Ripley, a man in his mid 20 s, claims he is close friends with Richard Dickie Greenleaf,

The Destructors Literary Analysis
Shaylyn Davis
Ms. Van Dam
10th Academic English
6 October 2017
Literary Fiction in The Destructors After reviewing the distinguishing characteristics of literary and
commercial fiction, it is clear that the short story, The Destructors, is more of a literary work of
fiction rather than that of a commercial fiction. Literary fiction does not focus solely on the reader s
satisfactory, but instead the enhanced understanding of life that a reader may attain from the insight
that a literary story provides. A literary fiction also plunges us more deeply into the real world
enabling us to understand life s difficulties and to emphasize with others (Johnson, Arp 57).
Commercial fiction however, is intended solely to entertain (Johnson, Arp 57), ... Show more

This is important in relation to the time period the story takes place. The Destructors is set after
World War ll in London, England, also known as Blitzed London , when homes were ravaged
from the bombings of the war. Knowing this information, it is apparent that Greene attempts to
show how the gang s actions were determined by their surroundings, their need to damage things
decided by the blitzed homes that they saw everyday. The plan to deface Old Misery s home
was an example of literary fiction because it contributes a better understanding of how the world
was affected post war and allows readers to emphasize with the characters in the story. Another
example of literary fiction in The Destructors is at the end of the story, when it takes an
unexpected turn. This is when a driver sees the carnage of the house and finds Mr. Thomas, and
begins to laugh. This shows literary fiction because a reader can infer the reason why the
passerbyer thought this was funny, which was because of how ironic it was that the house itself
could withstand the bombings from the war, but in the end, was destroyed by a group of teenage
boys. The example shows this because a literary fiction story requires a reader to expect the
unexpected, often resulting in a unsettling or unresolved ending (Johnson, Arp 61), The story has
many varying characteristics which make it a literary

The Importance Of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication
Let s Talk About Sex: The Importance of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Communication
between parents and adolescents is important when educating teens on how to practice safer sex.
Roni Caryn Rabin in her article, Why Parents Should Have the Sex Talk With Their Children,
provides evidence as to how and why these conversations are important for healthy adolescent
sexual development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60 percent of
sexually active high school students did not use any birth controlthe last time they had intercourse.
This article emphasizes that these numbers can be reduced if parents simply engage in a
conversation with their teens about sex. Furthermore, factors such as being uncomfortable or
nervous about talking to their parents and fears that parents will over react play a key role in why
parents and their children do not have a safe sextalk (Rabin, 2015). Over all, Rabin stresses that
this topic is important to address regularly in order to promote safe sex and healthy relationships
in teens. However, after reviewing this article, there are four aspects that must be acknowledged in
order to educate parents on how to engage in conversations about sex in the most effective way.
First and foremost, Rabin (2015) states in her article that teens who communicated with their
parents about sex were more likely to communicate with their sexual partners and more likely to
delay sexual activity. However, in a 2007

The Five Factor Model
THE FIVE FACTOR MODEL
James Baron and David Kreps had given the Five Factor model, which is based on Michael Porter
s Five Forces model of business analysis (Porter, 1980). These factors will influence the
Competitive Intelligence system in any organization. These factors are External Environment,
Workforce, Organizational Culture and Structure, Organizational Strategy, and Technology of
Production and Organization of Work (Baron Kreps, 1999). Lack of correspondence between any
one of these factors can lead the firm s CI practices to the failure.

External Environment
The External Environment component takes into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could also work to the firm s disadvantage, since gathered intelligence should never be
considered static. New developments are always transpiring that render recently collected
intelligence obsolete and invalid. The firm that fails to recognize this will have surely wasted its CI
efforts.
Workforce
The workforce element of the Five Factor model concerns demographic factors such as social (or
workforce) homogeneity (i.e., workforce uniformity with respect to education, work experience,
etc.). Workforce consistency also includes the skill set incorporated into the team. Demographic
factors can also seriously impede or enhance CI and strategy (Baron Kreps, 1999). The skill set
that the CI team leader possesses is vital to team success. Managers need to be able to understand
the degree of management their particular team requires. Due to the creative and sometimes
ambiguous nature of CI, team leaders must know when to step in and give direction or when to let

Conformity In Ken Kesey s One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Merriam Webster defines conformity as action in accordance with some specified standard or
authority . As it is a type of influence that involves change in belief or behavior in order to fit
into a group. Where in Ken Kesey s One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, conformity is a matter of
life or death. In the noveland in life, conformity is viewed as an easy way to shape into society s
mold. Societal expectations are shaped by the so called Combine a mysterious and in the dark
figure that is view as the puppeteer of the way society functions. In the Novel, Chief Bromden a
long time patient at a psychiatric ward is the first to recognize the Combine and its powers. At the
same time that this novel was written, the society of the 1950s was being challenged by a group
known as the beat generationwho wanted to reject and challenge the stringent norms that the
majority deemed as appropriate and necessary. While many members of society supported the
beliefs of conformity, in many ways the need for societal misfits was vital to secure a community
where all people would have a voice. While many did their best to challenge the Combine, in the
end the Combine would prevail, but the ideas of those who spoke out would resonate with others.
The Combine is an unstoppable force fueled by conformity, but Ken Keseyexplains that the only
way for progress in the novel (and society) is for a McMurphy type of character to challenge the
Combine.
In the 1950s, there was this prevalent

Comparing the Philosophies of Brave New World and Anthem...
The Philosophies Brave New World and Anthem
The books Brave New World by Aldus Huxley and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both valuable
twentieth century contributions to literature. Both books explore the presence of natural law in
man and propose a warning for what could happen when man s sense of right and wrong is taken
from him. In this essay, I hope to show how these seemingly unrelated novels both expound upon a
single, very profound, idea.
Before launching into the implications of these two novels, I believe a summary of the general
human experience in each of the two societies is necessary. Brave New World illustrates a society in
which science has been elevated to a god like position. In this novel, human ... Show more content

Soma is the drug of choice and is readily available. Solidarity services are required for each citizen
to help keep conditioning in tact. With all the scientific preservation of the body, it reaches sixty in
near perfect condition, but then rapidly deteriorates.
In contrast, Anthem is a society that has almost completely rejected science. It too is set in a
futuristic time, but one that has regressed significantly. Believing science was evil, the
controllers banished it and when the novel begins the candle is still a new invention. In this
nation, breeding takes place once a year and children conceived are raised in group homes with
codes instead of names. Students enter school and are discouraged from learning too much or
being too inquisitive. Citizens in Anthem are forbidden to speak personal pronouns and to do so
is a crime punishable by death. At fifteen, all students are assigned randomly to a job where they
will work until they turn forty. At forty years old, the controllers send them to live in the Home of
the Useless. After a full day of work, citizens all attend a social council meeting and then social
recreation. Citizens are forbidden to be alone and communication with the opposite sex is strictly
forbidden. Citizens have no drug to numb themselves, though they do not revolt or even express
dissatisfaction, their despair is evident in the hopeless lives they lead.

Given this information, explain how a female could have a consistent hematocrit of 48, large, well
defined skeletal muscles, and an abnormally deep voice.
The female that is being described could live in a high altitude location and engage in a lot of
strenuous athletic training.
В·List the hematocrits for the healthy male (sample 1) and female (sample 2) living in Boston (at
sea level) and indicate whether they are normal or whether they indicate anemia or polycythemia.
Healthy male living in Boston 48
Healthy female living in Boston 44
Both of these indicate that they are normal hematocrit values.
В·Describe the difference between the hematocrits for the male and female living in Boston. Why
does this difference between the sexes exist?
Males have higher hematocrit levels than females because males have more testosterone.
Testosterone levels stimulate the kidneys to release erythropoietin. Erythropoietin then stimulates
the synthesis of red blood cells.
В·List the hematocrits for the healthy male and female living in Denver (approximately one mile
above sea level) and indicate whether they are normal or whether they indicate anemia or
polycythemia.
Healthy male living in Denver 55
Healthy female living in Denver 53
Both of these levels indicate polycythemia.
В·How did the hematocrit levels of the Denver residents differ from those of the Boston residents?
Why? How well did the results compare with your prediction?

Here PEST framework will be used to analyze the macro environment which is divided into four
parts political, economic, social and technological factors.
2.1 Political As for the political environment, there are two aspects to be mentioned here.
2.1.1 Country s situation Country s situation includes three points. One of these three points is that
at the beginning of 1990s, China enforced a practical policy which is called change market for
technology. Secondly, according to more than 20 year long experience of joint venture with other
countries, we can know that it is unwise for domestic enterprises to continue to take this way to

2.1.2 Shanghai s situation For the situation of Shanghai, Shanghai s government found a special
way to develop economy by encouraging and supporting enterprise s acquisition. Under these
situations, SAIC took advantage of those political factors to purchase SSANG YONG Motor

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
Bullying Prevention There are many social problems in the US and throughout the world today.
One of the most significant of those problems is bullying (Macfarlane McPherson, 2004). More
than 160,000 children avoid school each day because they are concerned about being bullied or
because they have been bullied and are too afraid to go to school (Macfarlane McPherson,
2004). Cyberbullying the use of a computer or other electronic device to bully someone is also
on the increase. That can be harder to avoid, and children have even taken their own lives
because of the harassment. Nearly three million students are bullied through the internet every
year (Macfarlane McPherson, 2004). The number of children who are bullied gets larger each
year, as does the number of children who bully others. There are many reasons children are
bullied, and just as many reasons that children bully other children, but the main concern is how to
stop the problem and keep all children safe. Bullying can leave a serious imprint on the overall
performance of students, and can also affect their personalities (Phye Sanders, 2004). Because of
the seriousness of the bullying issue, there have been several bullying prevention programs
launched in order to help students feels safer both physically and emotionally (Phye Sanders, 2004).
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is one such program. It is designed to prevent bullying
activities in schools and protect students from harm. Bullying

Lottery Impact On Society
An analysis of how the lottery is operated and regulated can help identify the negative facets that
influence society. Determining what demographic most often participates in the lottery can aid in
finding the best way to minimize the social impact of gambling. Along with minimizing the
negative effects of the lottery, what people believe the chances of winning are can lead them to
false faith in investing money into the lottery. Where the money goes also influences people to
play, despite the lack of certainty. Looking back to history helps track progression and identifies
patterns. The lottery and its ongoing negative effects can still be fixed, leaving America with a safer
and more beneficial form of revenue and entertainment.

Essay On Progressive Movement

U.S. History (Post 1877)

The Progressive Movement
The progressive movement, the era of change in a New America , occurred in the late 19th century
into the early 20th century. Debated as the most influential time in history, this period birthed three
amendments (17th, 18th, and 19th) along with much social and political change. Sandwiched
between societal depression , this was a breath catching interlude of reform and social justice. This
movement was definitely a people s movement. But what caused it? How did it start and why?
One of the sparks in the blaze called the Progressive Movement was the shadow cast upon the
working class by big business and corrupt politics (The Gilded Age). The big business interacted
with and basically controlled politics (mainly because of monetary control). John Powell said in his
article, Unraveling the Progressive Movement , Men such as ... Show more content on

The big cities often favored middle class and upper class individuals. The standard and quality of
life was much higher for those with money. This may seem obvious, but the lower class
individuals were in diseased, highly populated areas in the slums of the city. These ghettos and
slums of the cities held a high number of immigrants. These immigrants were competing for low
wage jobs, swarming into heavy industrialized areas. Dr. Hansan, the author of the article, The
Progressive Era , says, The progressives came from a long tradition of middle class elites
possessing a strong sense of social duty to the poor. Progressives felt an obligation to help the
lower class. The biggest group that helped were middle class women. These women helped
immigrants to speak English, helped with child care, and helped with health care (Red Cross).
Along with immigrants, lower class citizens were also helped. Labor Unions were formed to

created; Sonny Cher make their first TV appearance in American Bandstand ; rights activist
Malcolm X is shot dead; the Gemini 3 launched the first US 2 man space flight; and the first United
States combat forces arrive in Vietnam. This was not the start of the Vietnam War since the war
actually started in 1955, pitting Communist North Vietnamagainst anti Communist South Vietnam.
The United States believed it had to protect South Vietnam from Communist take over and is the
reason the U.S. supplied South Vietnam with millions of dollars in military aid as well as with
military advisors from the start of the war. Eventually, the US had no other choice but to send
troops to war and it became the first war Americans opposed publicly and passionately, making
the US involvement in the Vietnam War a shameful venture rather than a noble cause. Although
the Vietnam War was the first televised war, it is unclear if Vietnam War films are able to give
an honest portrayal of the Vietnam War experience, or if truer reality of the war can be found
only in textbooks. The Vietnam War was so much a part of American life that it could not be
ignored, and with war films losing their appeal after World War II, it s hard to know if the Vietnam
War would be actually portrayed on the big screen. The

The Star had a photo of Williams posing in lingerie particularly placed next to a photo of him in

actually assaulting his victims, but those will never, and should never be released. The photo of
Williams in lingerie was necessary to be released because it showed the public of how alarming the
case actually is without crossing the line of being morbid. The TorontoStar received a lot of
backlash from the photo released however people need to remember that Williams is a murderer
and not to just focus on him being a fetishist (McGrath 2010). Due to all the troubling
information and photos released, people may tend to concentrate more on the fetish like
behaviours Williams displayed and not give enough attention to the fact that he took the lives of
two young women. It was important that the media relay enough details to the public concerning
the case so an understanding of the severity of the situation could be made. The message of the

Gertrude as an Innocent Victim or a Sexually and Morally Corrupt Woman in Hamlet
Shakespeare s character Gertrude is one of much mystery; in relation to this there are many
questions that need to be answered to establish Gertrude s innocence through out the play. Some
examples of these questions are, was Gertrude in some kind of relationship with Claudius before
the murder of her late Husband and did she know about the murder before or after it was
committed? Does she love Claudius or is it just her status that she is protecting? And did she ever
love the late King Hamlet?

Although she tells Hamlet this there is nothing to suggest that she has any guilty knowledge about
the late King s death or that she, herself, is missing him and grieving as well.
There is no solid evidence in the beginning to suggest that she really loves Claudius, but this
changes through out the play. This is shown when Laertes comes to attack Claudius. At first
Gertrude restrains him, saying calmly, good Laertes then she goes on to defend Claudius by
revealing that it was not the king that killed Polonious But not by him Act 4, Scene 5. It is
evident that she depends on Claudius. This is shown when she faces unwanted confrontation and
she immediately runs straight to Claudius, this is shown after she talks to Hamlet in the closet
scene and she seems dependant on the men in her life. However this also works the other way
round as we see that Claudius is slightly dependant on Gertrude s advice as he seems to ask her
for advice Do you think tis this Act 2 Scene 2, but although this is the case she is not included in
major decisions.
As a character there is a great deal emphasis on her relationship with Hamlet, it is evident that she
loves her son very dearly; she seems particularly concerned when she learns of Hamlets madness.
This could be explained in likeness of a mothers concern but it is also arguable that she has no
knowledge that the madness is pretence; this

Juvenile Offenders Have A Complicated Status
In the legal world, juvenile offenders have a complicated status. Not yet quite adults, with less
understanding of laws, there is a complicated balance that must be struck between their having to
answer to their crimes and holding them accountable for their actions while still being cognizant of
the fact that they do not always possess the mental capacity to fully understand their criminal
behavior as wrong. Juvenile courts today attempt to balance the punitive and rehabilitative needs of
youths. One such way to do this is the development of juvenile diversion programs. In Trevor B.

According to the Kentucky Court of Justice article titled Court Designated Workers Make A
Difference , juvenile diversion can consist of restitution, community service, curfew, counseling,
educational seminar attendance, and drug/alcohol assessments (2014). An example of a current
jurisdiction implementing diversion for youths is the Kentucky Juvenile Court. In Kentucky, as
with other states, detained youths entering diversion are placed into several programs to get
their lives back on track. These programs stem from law related education to other programs,
such as leadership, community outreach, being all you can be, making it on your own and
creative arts (2014). The basic goal of juvenile diversion is to educate youth, instill a sense of
accountability, and lessen deterrence. If compliance is met, cases are dismissed and formal
proceedings become unnecessary (2014). Indeed, as summed up by Milton, the main objectives of
juvenile diversion are to avoid labeling, reduce unnecessary detention and incarceration, reduce
repeat offenses, provide counseling and other services, and to lower justice system costs (Milton,
2011, p. 32). According to Randall G. Shelden and Daniel Macallair s book titled Juvenile Justice

protectionism to jeopardize future metropolitan supplies. Sugar surrendered its place as luxury and

discussion, first introduced in chapter two, of how sugar became less of a symbol of power and
more of a necessity for the common person. In chapter two, however, Mintz described this

savior came to the area and was overtaken by lust for power and evil greed, taking whatever they
could whenever they could. The relentlessness of the white invaders and the suffering they
brought with them brought terror and sadness to the native Campbell 2 African people. The
natives of the Congo wanted nothing to do with any foreign white people and rejected their
messages of peace and religion. All the natives ever wanted to do was live their own lives their
way, alone and in peace. A pattern emerges when looking at white conquerors throughout history.
Most have been remembered as evil, greedy men who pillage and ravage innocent people and their
homes for land, glory, and personal gain. Civilized white

Hi-Intensity Training
Is Hi Intensity Training Good for Seniors? What is High Intensity Training? Hi Intensity Weight
Training (HiIT) is a highly intensive workout that is done infrequently using heavier weight and
shorter brief rest periods between sets. Most people who train use typical training methods which
involve more frequent work outs, using lighter weights at a lower intensity. HiIT became a big hit
in the 1970 s when the inventor of Nautilus machines said that if you train harder, briefer, and less
often, your physical gains will outdo the typical training methods. Those who use HiIT in their
workout, go all out for a brief amount of time. This method is definitely advantageous to someone
who doesn t have much time to spend in the gym, but could be

Greek Mental Illness History
The history of psychopathology goes back hundreds of centuries in the past. The history of
psychopathology goes along with social and medical history. Throughout history we can see that
mental health has evolved in the way we conceive it. Also, through history, we understand why the
mentally ill have been tortured, or protected, and this will depend on the perspective of the human
being at that particular time. Mentally ill people in prehistoric times were seen as if evil spirits
possess them, so the exorcism and spells applications were the ways to treat their condition. Today
mental illness is treated scientifically and as human disease and not as in ancient times that was
awarded to supernatural powers. Primitive Cultures 10,000 BC In... Show more content on

Concepts such as freedom, the acquisition of citizenship and the right to property appeared. .
(Roberts, A. 1981/timeline 1789: The French Revolution) People began to have status in this
society, freedom, equality and fraternity. So that every person could have rights and also duties.
That s where the new structure of mentally ill treatment took place. Philippe Pinel acts in defense
of the rights of the mentally ill by releasing them out of the prisons and separating them into a
psychiatric facility for a respective treatment. But the lack of places for the mentally ill can also be
found (Roberts, A. 1981/timeline Origins of la Pitie Salpetriere and le Bicetre The mentally ill were
released from their chains and were seen as a patient and not as a matter of religion, but of
medicine. A group of scientists, Pinel, Esquirol and others who seek treatment of madness appeared
in this century, thinking that maybe the mental illness had a connection with morality. The types of
therapies at this time were massage therapy, hydrotherapy, diets among others. This centuries looks
to suppress violence by approaching the mentally ill in a different manner. (Roberts, A. 1981

Future Trends in Crisis Intervention
Future Trends in Crisis Intervention Abstract Mental Health Paraprofessionals (MHPP) will work
with the client and family on behavioral issues that occur in the home, school, and community. The
MHPP serves on the treatment team and assists professional staff with the execution of the
treatment plan. They also assist with securing community services that might be available to the
client and the client s family. The purpose of intensive Mental Health Paraprofessional Intervention
is to enable the client to be maintained in the most normalized, least restrictive setting as possible,
and to prevent unnecessary, inappropriate institutionalization. This paper discusses an overview

Because of the constant contact they are an invaluable member of the treatment team. With how
often CCP s get to observe patients on a daily basis they are able to pick up on behavior patterns
that other staff may not see. They are also able to see how various treatments affect a patient in
their daily lives. Some CCPs are designated to work one on one with a single client. A CCP in
this role is often assigned as such because a client has a particular need. Such needs could include
but are not limited to helping a client with severe cognitive or physical limitations, watching a
client whom is a danger to himself or others or working with a client whose treatment goals
involve intensive one on one work (Wyman, 2012). Impact There are many ways that the use of
counseling center paraprofessionals can benefit the organization. One of the many benefits of the
paraprofessional in the human service career field could be that they require less training than
typical clinician or other human service professional. That way the CCP is able to become
certified and begin work in a much shorter time frame then someone who is going through all the
required schooling and testing to become a licensed professional. Another aspect deals with the
lesser amount of pay therefore saving the organization money. With the way budgets are being cut it
is important to stretch every dollar as much as possible. Someone without the

Contributions Of Harriet Tubman
Every once in awhile, magazines or websites will post a list of the most influential people of all
time. This is similar to TIME Magazine s list of the 100 most influential people in the world each
year (Gibbs, 2017). While looking at the different opinions of the most influential people, it was
surprising to see that Harriet Tubmanwas not included on Business Insider, Biography Online, or
TIME s list (Garfield, 2016; Hart, 1978; Skiena Ward, 2013). Harriet Tubman was a very
influential woman who impacted the lives of many people. She was born into slaveryin Maryland
and was originally named Araminta Harriet Ross after her mother Harriet Green and her father
Ben Ross (Biography, 2017). Harriet escaped slavery and gained her freedom in Pennsylvania in
the year 1849 (Biography, 2017). Eventually she went back to Maryland and helped hundreds of
slaves escape to their freedom through the network of the Underground Railroad(Biography, 2017).
She was then given the nickname Moses because of her similarity of leading people to freedom
like the biblical figure of the same name ( Harriet Tubman, n.d. a). Tubman also helped the Union
Army during the Civil War, doing jobs such as a nurse, cook, laundress, scout, and spy ( Harriet
Tubman, n.d. a). She was a leading abolitionist and supporter of women s rights (Biography, 2017).
Harriet Tubman influenced people through her fearless attitude and generous heart, while
encouraging people to be kind to others and fight for what they

  • 3. Battleship Potemkin Essay Editing manipulates the audience s point of view of the story. Different cuts can delineate the plot and the meaning of the images distinctively. Battleship Potemkin, directed by Sergei Eisenstein was the example of how editing created emotions to the viewers in the theatre. The editing made the sequence into a lesson of how the Soviet Unionauthority was pressuring the public with complete dominance of violence. Battleship Potemkin is a movie produced by Eisenstein in 1925. A film about the Soviet Union soldiers life on the battleship and how they disobey their authoritative generals. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones (Nelson Mandela, 1994). The United States of America has more people behind bars than any other country on the planet. The prisons are at over double capacity. It cost a lot of money to house prisoners each year. The perplexing thing is that many of these States are willing to spend vast amounts of money to house prisoners for many years but will spend less than half on education. Because over a quarter of the prisoners incarcerated are there from drug related offenses, then it seems like the states could save a lot of money if drug policies were geared towards rehabilitation instead of incarceration. Overall they would be able to save billions of dollars. The demographics of the prison population in America are very discouraging with a very high unbalanced proportion of the prison population being African American. Although approximately 12% to 13% of the American population is African American, African Americans make up over 40% of the prison population. This number is so unusually disproportionate that many critics believe that the African American community is judged harsher than it would the Hispanics or the Caucasians. The same critics also believe that it is because many of the policies related to incarceration were designed specifically to target the African American community. This research is based on media involving children and adolescents, however this does not eliminate the effect media has on adults (Singer Singer, 2001, p. 269). Stoller stated that Fetishizing is the norm of males, not for females , (Valerie Steel, 1996) Meaning that females are not interested in body parts and sexy outfits in the same way men are. Fetishistic imagery is divided into three different types: the first is a woman with a phallic substitute, secondly, a woman without a phallus usually intimidated or mocked by women with a phallus and last, a woman as the phallus. In fetishistic imagery, the true focus is always the phallus, and not the woman itself. Men attain most pleasure from viewing voyeurism and fetishistic imagery because the men starts to feel more control and power of their own lives because the men identify themselves with the male protagonist. (Gaines, 1990.) Stated in Fetish: Fashion, Sex Power (Valerie Steel, 1996), many feminists interpret fetish as a symptom of patriarchy and capitalism, where the fetishist is always male and the female becomes the fetish itself, the perfect object. Fetishism is described as glorifying by some, however others would describe it as something negative, where the woman s desire has disappeared. • 17. The Bible Is Full Of Wisdom And Folly The Bible is full of wisdom and folly. This essay will evaluate the concepts of diligent people in Hebrew wisdom being wise, while the lazy person is a fool. The major part of the essay will concentrate in Proverbs, but we will review some scriptures from Ecclesiastes. Proverbs was written by Solomon, and he wrote it out of concern for his children. Ecclesiastes is said to have been written by Solomon, but this is not certain. Both books can be used by all for guidance, regardless of their age. Proverbs in general concentrates on moral virtues, and the opposite, their vices. The main theme of the book is the fear of the Lord, as it is seen fourteen times in Proverbs. Ecclesiastes main theme is life without God is empty, pointlessness and without meaning. There are a lot of contrasting chapters and verses comparing the differences between being wise and foolish, the wicked and righteous and the lazy and hardworking. Both books mainly concentrate on the contrasts between evil and good and foolishness and wisdom. So, let s look at some verses and relate the concepts, describe and compare them to being diligent (wise) or laziness (foolish). In Proverbs 15:19 it says The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway (ESV). The Destructors Literary Analysis Shaylyn Davis Ms. Van Dam 10th Academic English 6 October 2017 Literary Fiction in The Destructors After reviewing the distinguishing characteristics of literary and commercial fiction, it is clear that the short story, The Destructors, is more of a literary work of fiction rather than that of a commercial fiction. Literary fiction does not focus solely on the reader s satisfactory, but instead the enhanced understanding of life that a reader may attain from the insight that a literary story provides. The Destructors is set after World War ll in London, England, also known as Blitzed London , when homes were ravaged from the bombings of the war. Knowing this information, it is apparent that Greene attempts to show how the gang s actions were determined by their surroundings, their need to damage things decided by the blitzed homes that they saw everyday. The plan to deface Old Misery s home was an example of literary fiction because it contributes a better understanding of how the world was affected post war and allows readers to emphasize with the characters in the story. Another example of literary fiction in The Destructors is at the end of the story, when it takes an unexpected turn. This is when a driver sees the carnage of the house and finds Mr. Thomas, and begins to laugh. This shows literary fiction because a reader can infer the reason why the passerbyer thought this was funny, which was because of how ironic it was that the house itself could withstand the bombings from the war, but in the end, was destroyed by a group of teenage boys. The example shows this because a literary fiction story requires a reader to expect the unexpected, often resulting in a unsettling or unresolved ending (Johnson, Arp 61), The story has many varying characteristics which make it a literary ... The Importance Of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Let s Talk About Sex: The Importance of Parent Adolescent Sexual Communication Communication between parents and adolescents is important when educating teens on how to practice safer sex. Roni Caryn Rabin in her article, Why Parents Should Have the Sex Talk With Their Children, provides evidence as to how and why these conversations are important for healthy adolescent sexual development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60 percent of sexually active high school students did not use any birth controlthe last time they had intercourse. This article emphasizes that these numbers can be reduced if parents simply engage in a conversation with their teens about sex. Furthermore, factors such as being uncomfortable or nervous about talking to their parents and fears that parents will over react play a key role in why parents and their children do not have a safe sextalk (Rabin, 2015). Over all, Rabin stresses that this topic is important to address regularly in order to promote safe sex and healthy relationships in teens. However, after reviewing this article, there are four aspects that must be acknowledged in order to educate parents on how to engage in conversations about sex in the most effective way. First and foremost, Rabin (2015) states in her article that teens who communicated with their parents about sex were more likely to communicate with their sexual partners and more likely to delay sexual activity. At the same time that this novel was written, the society of the 1950s was being challenged by a group known as the beat generationwho wanted to reject and challenge the stringent norms that the majority deemed as appropriate and necessary. While many members of society supported the beliefs of conformity, in many ways the need for societal misfits was vital to secure a community where all people would have a voice. While many did their best to challenge the Combine, in the end the Combine would prevail, but the ideas of those who spoke out would resonate with others. The Combine is an unstoppable force fueled by conformity, but Ken Keseyexplains that the only way for progress in the novel (and society) is for a McMurphy type of character to challenge the Combine. The Philosophies Brave New World and Anthem The books Brave New World by Aldus Huxley and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both valuable twentieth century contributions to literature. Both books explore the presence of natural law in man and propose a warning for what could happen when man s sense of right and wrong is taken from him. In this essay, I hope to show how these seemingly unrelated novels both expound upon a single, very profound, idea. Before launching into the implications of these two novels, I believe a summary of the general human experience in each of the two societies is necessary. Brave New World illustrates a society in which science has been elevated to a god like position. In this novel, human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the most significant of those problems is bullying (Macfarlane McPherson, 2004). Cyberbullying the use of a computer or other electronic device to bully someone is also on the increase. That can be harder to avoid, and children have even taken their own lives because of the harassment. Nearly three million students are bullied through the internet every year (Macfarlane McPherson, 2004). The number of children who are bullied gets larger each year, as does the number of children who bully others. There are many reasons children are bullied, and just as many reasons that children bully other children, but the main concern is how to stop the problem and keep all children safe. Bullying can leave a serious imprint on the overall performance of students, and can also affect their personalities (Phye Sanders, 2004). Because of the seriousness of the bullying issue, there have been several bullying prevention programs launched in order to help students feels safer both physically and emotionally (Phye Sanders, 2004). Essay On Progressive Movement Michael Dudash Professor Kersey U.S. History (Post 1877) 28 September 2016 The Progressive Movement The progressive movement, the era of change in a New America , occurred in the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Debated as the most influential time in history, this period birthed three amendments (17th, 18th, and 19th) along with much social and political change. Sandwiched between societal depression , this was a breath catching interlude of reform and social justice. This movement was definitely a people s movement. But what caused it? How did it start and why? One of the sparks in the blaze called the Progressive Movement was the shadow cast upon the working class by big business and corrupt politics (The Gilded Age). The big business interacted with and basically controlled politics (mainly because of monetary control). John Powell said in his article, Unraveling the Progressive Movement , Men such as ... This was not the start of the Vietnam War since the war actually started in 1955, pitting Communist North Vietnamagainst anti Communist South Vietnam. The United States believed it had to protect South Vietnam from Communist take over and is the reason the U.S. supplied South Vietnam with millions of dollars in military aid as well as with military advisors from the start of the war. Eventually, the US had no other choice but to send troops to war and it became the first war Americans opposed publicly and passionately, making the US involvement in the Vietnam War a shameful venture rather than a noble cause. Although the Vietnam War was the first televised war, it is unclear if Vietnam War films are able to give an honest portrayal of the Vietnam War experience, or if truer reality of the war can be found only in textbooks. In Kentucky, as with other states, detained youths entering diversion are placed into several programs to get their lives back on track. These programs stem from law related education to other programs, such as leadership, community outreach, being all you can be, making it on your own and creative arts (2014). The basic goal of juvenile diversion is to educate youth, instill a sense of accountability, and lessen deterrence.
