Stand up comedy industry Essay
Title Stand up comedy industry
Thesis 1: From an industrial organization point of view, the stand up comedy market structure in the
1980s can be characterized as an oligopoly
The structure of a market, thus how a market is functioning, is the concept behind the industrial
organization theory . The Industrial Organization (IO) theory is about, how a structure of a market has
an influence on the strategy and decision making of a company. 1 The theory therefore focusses on the
market wherein the company operates and links the decisions of the company to the market. In the
economic theory of industrial organisation, an industry can be defined according to several different
criteria.2 According to Throsby, there are three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1975 such a diachronic dialectic was found for the first time in de music industry by Peterson and
Berger. They saw an active interaction/connection between small and large firms, which influenced
the market. While the large firms were competing with each other, niches opened up and were filled
by smaller firms.
But unlike the music industry and the American film industry (Mezias Mezias, 2000), there is not a
diachronic dialectic between small firms and large firms in the stand up comedy industry.
According to the resource partitioning theory, a theory conceptualized by Caroll in 1985, this dialectic
exists when the big firms are competing with each other. Just a few of these generalists survive and
they move forward toward the centre of the market. Because of this movement small pockets of
resources open up, where smaller firms can thrive (Vermeulen Bruggeman, 2000).
However, in the stand up comedy industry it is difficult to underestimate large and small firms, instead
we distinguish comedians and the media they use to reach their audience. Hence it weren t large firms
causing the opening of the niches for smaller firms. Instead it has been the increase of the use of
media over the past couple decades that has stimulated the creative industry of stand up comedy.

Tammany Hall Myth
The great Tamanend, of which Tammany Hall takes its name, was a lover of peace and a mythic figure
in the American ethos. To receive this great honor, it is said he stood up on the very land Philadelphia
would be built up from and stated that his tribe and the English colonialists would live in peace as
long as the waters run in river and creeks and as long as the stars and moon endure. [1] The people of
Philadelphia who watched on catapulted this man to great fame in the budding United States. To
cement his glory for ages to come, the Philadelphians built a statue in the center of town, and honored
him with a society officially known as the Society of St. Tammany, or colloquially as Tammany Hall.

Tweed, or Boss Tweed, was to start a volunteer fireman in New York City and from then on his rise to
power can only be described as meteoric. From this position he took it upon himself to be elected as
the city alderman, and from this position ran for the US House of Representatives and won. These
positions turned out to be benign and boring, he was only a Representative for one term, but while in
these jobs he cultivated a relationship with Tammany Hall and when his term was up he had a prime
position waiting for him. He was to become the sole proprietor of job, political jobs, in Tammany
Hall. Not one to waste an opportunity William Tweed installed his own men into key positions of
power and managed to control much of the New York City bureaucracy with his eponymous Tweed
Ring . This ring of corruption lasted more than ten years as Boss Tweed and his cronies embezzled
over 30 million dollars from New York City. This ring of fraud was ultimately left up for so long
because it was so efficient and in another way, genius. Tweed managed to maintain his power by
installing only his men into positions of political power, promising them not only influence but
money. But with this new wealth comes the guarantee of loyalty to your political boss. In most men s
eyes, this is a relatively small price to pay for the thousands of dollars to be made from the jobs he
would give. But his regime was to end, in 1869, for a myriad of factors some including the political

What Is The Value Of Earnestity In The Importance Of Being...
The Importance of Being Earnest is a trivial comedy that filled with sarcastic and witty Victorian
aphorisms while satirizing the Victorian society and their social morality. Wilde criticizes against the
arrogance, self importance, ignorance, and hypocrisy of the Victorian high society, also targets plenty
of ideals and morality facts that were as ridiculous as they were nonsensical. Earnestness is a
determined and serious desire to do the correct thing. Ironically, not one character in the play seems to
care about being honest. The characters in The Importance of Being Earnest play the role of false and
dishonest identities to achieve their goals in the society. Appearance was everything, the characters
gradually became hypocritical in their fashionable and faddish struggle to obtain the fake ideals of
earnestness and they were ready to pay any price for it. (qtd. in Bachelorandmaster) At the very
beginning of the play, we have been seeing that two main male characters, Algernon Moncrieff and
Jack Worthing, have been leading double lives. Jack Worthing is a quite responsible and decent young
man, while he has invented a fictitious brother named Ernest. In Herthfordshire, Jack is known as
Jack, however, in London he is known as Ernest. Jack misleads people to include an imaginary
brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from the country to join among urban socialites.
Therefore, there is no character named Ernest, but everything revolves around being

Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Essay
Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Almost everyone experiences a criminal career (Moffitt, 43).
The onset begins during adolescence and involves a series of petty crimes. The amount of crimes
committed during the criminal career at any given time is the rate at which the offender offends. What
differentiates the career criminal from the person who had a criminal career is this; Whereas the latter
by and large discontinues their crimes by the time they are in their mid 20s, those who are career
criminals will persist with their offending at a high rate during their life course (Moffitt, 41). One
theory put forth argues that the reason that people continue to commit crimes is that they have
neuropsychological defects (Moffitt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These crimes, however, were still considered petty and are not highly atypical for an adolescent boy.
Despite these delinquent behaviors, Salvatore s fate as a career criminal had not yet been sealed. At
age sixteen Salvatore acquired a job at a hat factory. However, the benefits of acquiring adult social
roles would not act as a means of desistence for Salvatore. The job would give Salvatore a modest
living; one that provided a steady income of seven dollars a week. It was on a Friday on his way home
from work that Salvatore s life course would take a turn for the worse; Not by bad luck but by a stroke
of good luck. Salvatore gambled his seven dollar weekly wage and wound up winning $244 in a game
of alley craps. In turn Salvatore adopted the nickname Lucky and, instead of going to work the next
day, Luciano would go to the alleys. A far cry from shoplifting and gambling, Lucky s criminal career
began to show a good deal of escalation by his mid teens. When an oppurtunity arose and it meant
fiscal gains Lucky would take it. Up to this point all that had been available was petty crimes (e.g.
theft and gambling), but drugs provided him the opportunity of a higher standard of living. The
change of environment led to a dramatic shift in the crimes he would commit frequency at which he
would commit them, and led to a

Parkinson s Disease And The Disease Of The Nervous System
Definition: Parkinson s disease is a chronic, progressive disease of the nervous system characterized
by the cardinal features of rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability (O Sullivan and
Schmitz, 2007). The condition can develop between age group 60 and 80 years and symptoms mostly
appear around 60 years of age (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007).
Parkinson s disease or PD is classified into idiopathic Parkinson s disease, parkinsonism due to
identifiable causes and parkinsonism in other neurodegenerative disorders. True Parkinson disease is
classified into two subclinical groups. One group demonstrates postural instability and gait
disturbances as dominant symptoms whereas the other group exhibits tremor as the prominent feature
(O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007).
Pathophysiology:
Parkinson s disease is affected by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons which is responsible to
produce dopamine. Dopaminergic neurons have their cell bodies in substantia nigra pars compacta
(SNpc) in basal ganglia (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007). Basal ganglia are a collection of
interconnected gray matter nuclear masses deep within the brain . These gray matter masses are
caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus and the substantia nigra. Basal ganglia receive
its input through striatum (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007).
Clinical Presentation:
1. Rigidity: Rigidity is defined as increased resistance to passive movement. Parkinson patients

Themes Of Tuesdays With Morrie
Tuesdays with Morrie is a non fiction book which includes values and lessons inculcated in the story
of an old man named Morrie Schwartz and a young man named Mitch Albom which had lost touch for
several years. The book circulated in the events of their lives from the flashbacks and present times
and how they were able to meet up again and change each other s lives. The central theme of this book
is about life lessons one can garner through death. It is how the encounter and visitation of Mitch to
his college professor Morrie every Tuesday became lessons on how to live life. With this, Tuesdays
with Morrie is the outcome of the remaining time they spent together while Morrie is nearing to his
death. The story began with a flashback of Mitch s Graduation Day. He is bidding goodbye to Morrie

I learned that in life, we should not let go soon but also, we should not hang on too long. It s alright to
still hope for something/someone you want until you get the chance to get it but sometimes, patience
is not always the answer; waiting for so long to nothing is a waste of time and we should not let his
happen. Another thing is I also learned about contentment; We should learn to accept what we are able
to do and what we aren t able to do. People have their own assets and imperfections and to deal with
them, it would be just a matter of acceptance; acceptance of who we are and what we are not. I
recommend this book to all the people especially those who are in need of motivation or even people
who are becoming hopeless and feeling worthless. This is not just an ordinary book which tells true
story, but also, this is a story which will really touch the hearts of those who will be reading this. This
is a book which is worth the time and read for it will really move you to a positive outlook on

Transactional Strategies At New York University
Key Points The topic of Wade Boykin speech at New York University was academic success for all
students, but more specifically students of color. He discussed the documentation and evidence that
explains the achievement gap between students of color and their white counterparts. Boykin also
believes the evidence for why the gap exists should be the guide for implementing strategies,
inventions and programs to raise achievement. The evidence and research suggest that to raise
achievement the intervention should start with transactional strategies. Transactional strategies involve
the exchanges between teachers and students, classroom collaboration, and classroom environment.
The specific focuses of the transactional strategies are student engagement, positive self efficacy and
teacher student relationship quality (TSRQ). Research shows that student engagement leads to greater
success for students of color in math and reading, instilling positive self efficacy helps build
confidence, perseverance and hold students accountable for their own learning and teacher student
relationships gives the opportunity for meaningful learning experiences and intellectual exchanges.
Comparison with the Text
Boykin s speech and the book Creating the Opportunity to Learn correlates in relations to explaining
the dimensions of the achievement gap and the strategies that can raise achievement for students of
colors. Chapter 1 of the book and the first portion of the speech explains the

Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey
The psychosexual development theory is proposed by a 1900s Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud.
He was famous for various psychological theories, including the theory of personality development,
dreams and psychosexual development. The psychosexual development theory discussed about four
stages of life that contribute to the development of personality. There are oral, anal, phallic, latency
and genital phase. Sometimes people can surpass these stages and grown to a fully mature adult,

Mr. Fredrickson and Mr. Sefelt only exchange medicines during the night before sleep. Despite for
security reason, taking pill for Fredrickson is also an action for calmness, and it helps him to go to
sleep in a comfortable stage. The pleasure that he gain from the action is significant to his daily life
motion. The second stage of development is anal phase. This stage refers to the age of 18 months or
two years old to preschool or about three years old (Hjelle, 288). Dr. Freud believed that this stage is
crucial to the development of adult personality traits. This stage had been extensively researched by
many psychologists, who believe that anal erotism is the most powerful influence on personality, it

defense mechanisms that use to transform socially unacceptable ideal and unconsciously transformed
it into socially acceptable actions or behaviors. Reaction formation refers to unconsciously suppress

mechanism when individuals posses ideas that are opposite of societal wants. One of the symbolic

Athenian Democracy Dbq
Despite having a Limited Democracy, Athens enjoyed many freedoms. An example of these freedoms
would be people voting, the Athenians could vote. Athens had a democracy with a very high citizen
participation. Athens had a democracy where there was large amounts of participation in it. An
example of this would be the Vase in Document 1, it shows multiple Athenian people that are working
together on a project. In Document 1, one of the people is an Athenian Soldier, based on what he is
wearing, and the others working appear to be Athenian citizens. The vase appears to show teamwork
and unity between the men, which is also another sign of a democracy. Another example of the
participation is in Document 2, which is a quote from the Celestine s. This mentions a people party, in
which is a political party that is to be made up Athenians citizens that make laws and governing. The
quote by the Thucydides in Document 5, mentions the Athenians participation was beyond the
obscurity of his condition , in other words no matter who you were you could participate in the
Athenian Democracy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Corruption is mentioned by Plato in Document 8, which was what he thought the eager ruler caused.
Also the history of Athens had corruption in it too, but afterwards it was not to be talked about
anymore. This is shown in Document 9 by the excerpt from Aristotle s Politics. It talked about how
tyrannies end democracy and allow the corruptions of the states. In addition, it was also talked about
in Document 4 by Aeschines, and how only a democracy remedies the temper of one s autocratic
rulers. Lastly, Democracy was combating the conception of Lawlessness of Liberty . (Document 3)

Two Examples Of Black Power-Era Nationalism In Hip Hop Nas
nother example of Black Power era nationalism in hip hop is New York rapper Nas s song Black
Zombies, where he advocates for Black owned businesses as a way to gain freedom from the
oppression that Black Americans face from white controlled social, economic, and political systems
through the lyrics:
What do we own? Not enough land, not enough homes
Not enough banks, to give a brother a loan
So stop being controlled, we Black zombies (lines 13 15)
While afrocentrism tended to focused on minimizing European influence on culture, Black Power era
nationalism had different scales of nationalism that advocated for various ideologies that were more
political or economic. In this case, Nas advocates economic nationalism as a means of increasing ...

for Black youth in order to discourage gang activity by encouraging expression through hip hop
culture instead (Henderson). It functioned as an afrocentric organization that was designed to build
solidarity among the community of true believers across space and time (Hill Collins). The name Zulu
Nation in itself takes inspiration from the release of a British feature film on the Zulu Tribe of

Stigma Of Ex-Convicts
Stigma is a point of disgrace that breaks a person apart from normal people. When a person is labelled
by their past karma they are seen as a part of a stereotyped group. One group of people I think
deserves better understanding is the ex convicts . These people struggle under their life long stigma
that comes with the label of ex convict . In reality ex prisoners have paid their debts for their
wrongdoing and have been considered for their re entry in society. Ex prisoners should be allowed all
human rights, including the right to vote and work. It is very unfortunate that it does not happen in our
community. The person who is willing to change his all life around, is not accepted by community as
before. They get denied for essential resources

24x50 FFP Reticle ERS Rifle Scope. This scope comes with all the features long range shooters look
for at an affordable price. Check out these great features:

Bushnell has two features to increase light transmission in the Elite Tactical scope. The first is the
oversize 50mm objective lens. A larger objective lens, or opening, simply allows the scope to gather
more light. This makes vision in low light conditions much better. Second, Bushnell applies their Ultra
Wide Band Coating to the lenses to cut down light reflection. Both of these features combine to
maximize this scope s light gathering ability.
Weatherproof
As people with glasses know, moisture is the enemy of all optics. Rifle scopes are no exception.
Bushnell s Rainguard HD lens coating repels moisture to prevent blurring and fogging, even in the
rain. On the inside of the scope, a nitrogen purge acts as a barrier to moisture to prevent fogging as
well. A little rain isn t going to affect your shooting with this scope.
Parallax Adjustment
All high quality scopes have an adjustment to eliminate errors due to parallax. The Elite Tactical has a
convenient adjustment on the side that enables the shooter to adjust parallax to the desired shooting
distance from a shooting position. This is a great feature that most precision shooters will

Confucianism And Daoism Essay
Confucianism and Daoism affected the social structure of early China through culture, education, and
government though the effects varied greatly between these two beliefs. Culture in China is different
due to the teachings of Confucianism that began when Confucius was age twenty three, as well as the
teachings of Daoism because both teachings believed in harmony and living tranquilly. Education was
shaped by Daoism and Confucianism for the reason that Confucians believed everyone should be
educated while Daosits thought it was irrelevant. Since Confucius lived in a time of political unrest
from 551 to 478 B.C.E., he worked to gain political stability whereas the Daosits were indifferent on
that issue.
Culture was impacted by Daoism and Confucianism because the teachings that were proclaimed,
breached on the topic of living a harmonious life filled with respect for one another. Confucianism
especially stressed the idea of reverence towards an older person. With this mentality, it is almost as if
adults are never to be at fault. Fathers were supposed to be revered and loved by the children. Though

Government And Law In Reformation Theology . The Protestant
Government and Law in Reformation Theology The Protestant Reformation s initiation through
Martin Luther s criticism of the Catholic Church with his Ninety Five Theses brought about a united
front of Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, and Martin Luther and their attempts to reform the Catholic
Church, all of whom eventually split from the Church and started their own religious movements. As
the Reformation movement flourished under each leader, their theological differences eventually split
the movements apart drastically, their differences eventually turning into a massive feud between
Zwingli and Luther, each declaring the other as a heretic [1]. Of their many differences, their opinions

Calvin had a very similar viewpoint to Zwingli s beliefs on the authority of the church and state, with
some slight differences regarding the level of importance placed upon the church. In agreement with
Zwingli, Calvin affirmed that if it be his pleasure to appoint kings over kingdoms, and senators or
other magistrates over free cities, it is our duty to be obedient to any governors whom God has
established over the places in which we reside [3]. While Zwingli placed more of a balance upon the
relationship between the state and church, Calvin asserted that the state only held authority as a direct
result of the church, the authority directly approved of by God. In his view, any influential entities
within the state only held their influence under God. Calvin first pushed for his theology to be
implemented after writing Institutes of the Christian Religion, attempting to reform the religious life
within Geneva, Switzerland for two years until he and a contemporary, William Farel refused to adopt
religious practices enforced in other parts of Switzerland. Calvin escaped the city under persecution,
only to return in 1541 once the council of Geneva had finally agreed to implement his previous
reforms under the diminishing influence of the church there. His Ecclesiastical Ordinances were
implemented in the city except for the most significant aspect, the Consistory. The Consistory was

The Impact Of Colonialism In Disgrace
ABSTRACT Social system is strongly affected by the forces enacting within its realm. All changes
owe to these forces. Polarity gives rise to a tension and the resultant force , its direction and magnitude
are decided by the magnitude and direction of the forces enacting. Power and powerlessness have
created polarity specially in post colonial period, bringing in frustration, alienation, identity crisis and
at times even revolt. J.M. Coetzee s Disgrace depicts the struggle of a white man and his daughter in
quest for their lost identity being the victims of the racial revolt and sexual assault. The impact of post
apartheid context is the main concern reflecting the social status of South Africans. The legacy of the
apartheid still haunts the country despite it being ended legally. Robbery, rape, vandalism haunt the
nation. The novel indicates that how pressing circumstances may lead to devastation and also that
transformation within does not necessarily bring in the desired change in society. Physical abuse

who is reciting a poem by Byron to his class, states that the poem is about a fallen angel condemned to

would overthrow him, married off Thetis unwillingly to a mortal, thereby dooming all of her children
to mortality. Thus, robbed of his divinity, Achilleus constantly reaches for it, knowing it is rightfully
his. He recognizes an almost divine power within himself, but realizes that his capability is chained by
his mortality. Where most Homeric characters are enabled by the gods, Achilleus is restrained by
them; he possesses a heroic consciousness of the cosmos, divinity, and mortality. However, for the
love of Patroklos, Achilleus stops grasping at the divinity which is rightfully his and chooses a
diminishment in mortality. Though Achillleus chooses a seemingly lower role and submits to his
mortality, this choice is ultimately what makes him the hero of the Iliad. Rather than seeking personal
glory, he embraces mortality and sacrifices himself for the redemption of a friend. Thus by embracing
his mortality, Achilleus becomes something more than a mortal, achieving a level of heroism not even
the gods can posses.
Greek heroism defines the hero as one who shows valor and upholds his

Variola rex smallpox
Variola rex (Smallpox)
Smallpox is a virus that was first founded in ancient times. The virus?s proper name is Variola rex, and
it has various different forms as well as various symptoms. Among these forms are typical smallpox,
hemorrhagic smallpox, and malignant smallpox, all of which usually always cause death in their
victims. Some of the typical symptoms of smallpox include red vesicles and pustules all over,
bleeding from all orifices of the body, swelling in the face, throat, and eyes, difficulty eating and
swallowing, delirium, malaise, deterioration of the bone marrow, lymph nodes and mucus membranes
of the body, and a multitude of other secondary symptoms. Smallpox is typically diagnosed by ruling
out the possibility of other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the introductory stages of the rash the small bumps are filled with a clear fluid and are known as
vesicles, but as the virus progresses the vesicles become hard and scab over. The fluid inside the
vesicles turns into puss and the large bumps then become known as pustules. The rash becomes fully
developed between 12 and 14 days after the symptoms of the disease appear. As the disease follows its
course, symptoms become more and more severe and uncomfortable for the patient. Red spots on the
patient begin to turn black, while others turn white, the individual experiences strong delirium,
hemorrhages of blood at the anus, mouth, and nose, raw flesh from the stripping of the skin, and
fistulous ulcers in the ligaments, body, limbs, and joints. Smallpox is also associated with the
unbelievable amount of swelling and protuberance in the throat and eyes, which obstruct vision as
well as the ability to swallow and perform similar functions. The virus also causes the rotting of the
ligaments and bones.
Because the smallpox virus attacks the mucus membranes, bone marrow, and lymph nodes of the
body, most patients obtain the gruesome disfigurement of the face and nose and limbs.( Bollet
1987). The previous stage of the smallpox infection is known as the second stage, which is most
commonly and not surprisingly a phase at which most individuals do not survive. Those that do

for our purposes, a simplified model that places everyone in one of two categories: high risk, which
includes drivers who average at least one accident each year, and low risk, which includes drivers who
average less than one. If, when you apply for insurance, you have a driving record that stretches back
twenty years without an accident or one that goes back twenty years with thirty seven accidents, the
insurance company can be pretty sure which category to place you in. But if you are a new driver,

Such practice contributes to prosperity of inertia and conservatism. Another negative effect of
ritualization is that there is much attention to external protocol aspects of ritual. Of course, ceremonity
during official events is not an element of only Korean culture, however, it is quite noticeable that
Korean pay a lot of attention to such kind of elements. The combination of hierarchy and formalism
generates a developed system of many conventional symbols that indicate to which particular system
and status a certain person belongs. For many Korean schools, institutions and even private firms it is
normal to have uniforms as a special form of belongingness. The combination of formalism and

on an island. They can either stick to their civilized ways to survive or they can let nature take them
over and become savages. Throughout the book Golding molds the boys after society. Golding states
that Humans are savage by nature , and that what empowers the inner savage in people is selfishness,
brutality and wanting dominance over others. He proves this statement by providing an antagonist
who is shellfish, brutal and demands dominance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Introduction
Starting a business is a multi step process that can be overwhelming when faced alone. Regardless of
businesses location, whether it is a third world or a fully developed country, launching and
maintaining a healthy production can be a very complicated and perplex procedure. But with enough
patience and knowledge, even the hardest dreams can be achieved. Looking around us we see
countless of businesses flourish everyday, and even more to fail, preventing many people from taking
a risk and stepping into the world of entrepreneurship. But knowing what you want and where to look
for it will guarantee a successful and fully developed commerce.
Many people in todays world think that it is better to start a business in a fully developed country,
rather than a third world country, believing that in a third world country their investments are not safe
and secure. However, an experienced and knowledgeable investor is aware of the existence of a huge

The Dimensions of Team Membership Essay
Introduction Desire for control, tolerance for change, wanting direction, not wanting conflict, getting
along with team members and working together towards a common goal are a few of the items that

takes to form team norms. Understanding your leadership style in various task and relationship
oriented situations and how you handle conflict in are a few other topics discussed. Identifying within

Bion documented three behaviors that occur during dissonance as; (1) dependence, (2) fight flight, and
(3) pairing (Bright, 2011). Dependence in a group is seen as members blaming someone or something
else for their awkward feeling and either becoming dysfunctional when the group becomes overly
dependent on members, or having a positive outcome if the group comes together and rallies to
succeed (Bright, 2011). I experienced both sides of dependence when my former employer made
major changes to the leadership of the organization. The leader that was put in place was rarely there
and had a separate agenda from the organization. At first a few of us banded together to keep things at
status quo, but after a while we gave up and I became emotionally detached from the organization.
Fight flight behavior is evident when there is ambiguity. Disruptive conflict between members of the
group is the fight aspect and the flight aspect is when members mentally shut down and no longer
participate in the group (Bright, 2011). Neither behavior is productive in a group, but can be turned
into a positive if recognized and dealt with proactively; communication is the key. During the
reorganization mentioned above, there were several disruptive conflicts that resulted in terminations.
Becoming emotionally detached wasn t a bad thing for me on a personal level because I didn t take
work home with me and I

Literary Criticism In To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate...
Literary criticism is defined as an informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature. An
example of a literary criticism is intertextual criticism, which is a comparison of two literary works in
terms of symbols, themes, characters, and other criteria. In the fictitious novels To Kill a Mockingbird
and A Separate Peace, Harper Lee and John Knowles use intertextual criticism to allow the reader to
associate the novel with other works and establish connections. Throughout the stories A Separate
Peace and To Kill A Mockingbird, the stories contain several similarities in terms of loss of innocence,
using a tree as a symbol of friendship, and using the scapegoat archetype. Loss of innocence was
addressed in both novels in similar ways. When Phineas exhibited confusion at Gene s studying
habits, Gene felt like his brain exploded, he minded, despised the possibility that I might be head of
the school (Knowles 45). In both works of literature, a sudden realization triggered a loss of innocence
and change in attitude. In this case, when Gene found out that Phineas minded that he could be the top
of their class, he interpreted it as Phineas being envious and wanting him to fail. Gene thinking that
Phineas wants him to fail completely changed the dynamic of their relationship and Gene s naive
thoughts of him and Phineas having a healthy friendship. Comparably, when Brinker confronted
Phineas and Gene about the tree incident, the words shocked Phineas into awareness (Knowles 167).
When Phineas realized the true reason behind his injury, Phineas s character, specifically in the way he
acted towards Gene, was affected. Phineas had spent the majority of the novel in denial of Gene s
crimes and when he found out he came to the realization that not everyone was on his side. With this
comes his loss of naivety and his undying love for life were compromised. Similarly in To Kill A
Mockingbird, when Jem found out the true views of Maycomb it was, Jem s turn to cry. His face was
streaked with angry tears...it ain t fair (Lee 243). Similar to the previous two examples Jem was a
young boy who after hearing the verdict of the trial, comes to the realization of the true working of
Maycomb. After seeing

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is known for their six wondrous active and non active volcanoes,

Kilauea is the youngest and the most popular active volcano on the Big Island, it has been

Max Weber s Protestant Ethic And The Spirit Of Capitalism
Max Weber s the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism is one of the most debated and discussed
pieces of sociological work, both in the years following its publication and in contemporary sociology
classrooms and academia. The main focus of the work surrounds how a change in religion in certain
areas during the protestant reformation created the spirit of capitalism which then took on a life of its
own. A summary of the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism will be included later in this essay
as it is important to detail what Weber was intending when he published this work. There are
misconceptions about Weber s work which Weber attempted to limit during the essay with his

(Weber, 1905, 1 8)
Weber uses a piece of writing by Benjamin Franklin which discusses how people should act towards
credit, money, debt in an attempt to show that Franklin was suggesting that people should be
attempting to gain wealth as a personal duty. Weber continues by clarifying that capitalism did not
originate from the Protestant Reformation and that capitalism has been viewed in societies ranging
from India, Asia and the Middle East but they lacked what Weber called the spirit of capitalism shown
in the time frame which he was looking at. Weber defines and discusses the change in economic
systems from economic traditionalism to capitalism. Weber thought that religion was not the driving
force in the rise of capitalism but had a greater impact in bringing about the change from economic
traditionalism to capitalism. Weber also discusses one of the unintended consequences of the
reformation which was the rise in rationalization in society brought about by the change in dominate
religion.
(Weber, 1905, 8 28)
The idea of a calling within Lutherism is discussed as it furthers Weber s ideas about how the
reformation brought about a new attitude towards work and play. The calling within Lutherism
revolves around peoples work and business and how that relates to their religious beliefs. Weber does
however say that Lutherism was not as important to his argument as Calvinism.

  • 2. Stand up comedy industry Essay Title Stand up comedy industry Thesis 1: From an industrial organization point of view, the stand up comedy market structure in the 1980s can be characterized as an oligopoly The structure of a market, thus how a market is functioning, is the concept behind the industrial organization theory . The Industrial Organization (IO) theory is about, how a structure of a market has an influence on the strategy and decision making of a company. 1 The theory therefore focusses on the market wherein the company operates and links the decisions of the company to the market. In the economic theory of industrial organisation, an industry can be defined according to several different criteria.2 According to Throsby, there are three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1975 such a diachronic dialectic was found for the first time in de music industry by Peterson and Berger. They saw an active interaction/connection between small and large firms, which influenced the market. While the large firms were competing with each other, niches opened up and were filled by smaller firms. But unlike the music industry and the American film industry (Mezias Mezias, 2000), there is not a diachronic dialectic between small firms and large firms in the stand up comedy industry. According to the resource partitioning theory, a theory conceptualized by Caroll in 1985, this dialectic exists when the big firms are competing with each other. Just a few of these generalists survive and they move forward toward the centre of the market. Because of this movement small pockets of resources open up, where smaller firms can thrive (Vermeulen Bruggeman, 2000). However, in the stand up comedy industry it is difficult to underestimate large and small firms, instead we distinguish comedians and the media they use to reach their audience. Hence it weren t large firms causing the opening of the niches for smaller firms. Instead it has been the increase of the use of media over the past couple decades that has stimulated the creative industry of stand up comedy. The last fifty years booms ... • 3. Tammany Hall Myth The great Tamanend, of which Tammany Hall takes its name, was a lover of peace and a mythic figure in the American ethos. To receive this great honor, it is said he stood up on the very land Philadelphia would be built up from and stated that his tribe and the English colonialists would live in peace as long as the waters run in river and creeks and as long as the stars and moon endure. [1] The people of Philadelphia who watched on catapulted this man to great fame in the budding United States. To cement his glory for ages to come, the Philadelphians built a statue in the center of town, and honored him with a society officially known as the Society of St. Tammany, or colloquially as Tammany Hall. A club with the name of a great leader who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tweed, or Boss Tweed, was to start a volunteer fireman in New York City and from then on his rise to power can only be described as meteoric. From this position he took it upon himself to be elected as the city alderman, and from this position ran for the US House of Representatives and won. These positions turned out to be benign and boring, he was only a Representative for one term, but while in these jobs he cultivated a relationship with Tammany Hall and when his term was up he had a prime position waiting for him. He was to become the sole proprietor of job, political jobs, in Tammany Hall. Not one to waste an opportunity William Tweed installed his own men into key positions of power and managed to control much of the New York City bureaucracy with his eponymous Tweed Ring . This ring of corruption lasted more than ten years as Boss Tweed and his cronies embezzled over 30 million dollars from New York City. This ring of fraud was ultimately left up for so long because it was so efficient and in another way, genius. Tweed managed to maintain his power by installing only his men into positions of political power, promising them not only influence but money. But with this new wealth comes the guarantee of loyalty to your political boss. In most men s eyes, this is a relatively small price to pay for the thousands of dollars to be made from the jobs he would give. But his regime was to end, in 1869, for a myriad of factors some including the political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. What Is The Value Of Earnestity In The Importance Of Being... The Importance of Being Earnest is a trivial comedy that filled with sarcastic and witty Victorian aphorisms while satirizing the Victorian society and their social morality. Wilde criticizes against the arrogance, self importance, ignorance, and hypocrisy of the Victorian high society, also targets plenty of ideals and morality facts that were as ridiculous as they were nonsensical. Earnestness is a determined and serious desire to do the correct thing. Ironically, not one character in the play seems to care about being honest. The characters in The Importance of Being Earnest play the role of false and dishonest identities to achieve their goals in the society. Appearance was everything, the characters gradually became hypocritical in their fashionable and faddish struggle to obtain the fake ideals of earnestness and they were ready to pay any price for it. (qtd. in Bachelorandmaster) At the very beginning of the play, we have been seeing that two main male characters, Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, have been leading double lives. Jack Worthing is a quite responsible and decent young man, while he has invented a fictitious brother named Ernest. In Herthfordshire, Jack is known as Jack, however, in London he is known as Ernest. Jack misleads people to include an imaginary brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from the country to join among urban socialites. Therefore, there is no character named Ernest, but everything revolves around being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Essay Biography of Charles Lucky Luciano Almost everyone experiences a criminal career (Moffitt, 43). The onset begins during adolescence and involves a series of petty crimes. The amount of crimes committed during the criminal career at any given time is the rate at which the offender offends. What differentiates the career criminal from the person who had a criminal career is this; Whereas the latter by and large discontinues their crimes by the time they are in their mid 20s, those who are career criminals will persist with their offending at a high rate during their life course (Moffitt, 41). One theory put forth argues that the reason that people continue to commit crimes is that they have neuropsychological defects (Moffitt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These crimes, however, were still considered petty and are not highly atypical for an adolescent boy. Despite these delinquent behaviors, Salvatore s fate as a career criminal had not yet been sealed. At age sixteen Salvatore acquired a job at a hat factory. However, the benefits of acquiring adult social roles would not act as a means of desistence for Salvatore. The job would give Salvatore a modest living; one that provided a steady income of seven dollars a week. It was on a Friday on his way home from work that Salvatore s life course would take a turn for the worse; Not by bad luck but by a stroke of good luck. Salvatore gambled his seven dollar weekly wage and wound up winning $244 in a game of alley craps. In turn Salvatore adopted the nickname Lucky and, instead of going to work the next day, Luciano would go to the alleys. A far cry from shoplifting and gambling, Lucky s criminal career began to show a good deal of escalation by his mid teens. When an oppurtunity arose and it meant fiscal gains Lucky would take it. Up to this point all that had been available was petty crimes (e.g. theft and gambling), but drugs provided him the opportunity of a higher standard of living. The change of environment led to a dramatic shift in the crimes he would commit frequency at which he would commit them, and led to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Parkinson s Disease And The Disease Of The Nervous System Definition: Parkinson s disease is a chronic, progressive disease of the nervous system characterized by the cardinal features of rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007). The condition can develop between age group 60 and 80 years and symptoms mostly appear around 60 years of age (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007). Dopaminergic neurons have their cell bodies in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) in basal ganglia (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007). Basal ganglia are a collection of interconnected gray matter nuclear masses deep within the brain . These gray matter masses are caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus and the substantia nigra. Basal ganglia receive its input through striatum (O Sullivan and Schmitz, 2007). • 7. Themes Of Tuesdays With Morrie Tuesdays with Morrie is a non fiction book which includes values and lessons inculcated in the story of an old man named Morrie Schwartz and a young man named Mitch Albom which had lost touch for several years. The book circulated in the events of their lives from the flashbacks and present times and how they were able to meet up again and change each other s lives. The central theme of this book is about life lessons one can garner through death. It is how the encounter and visitation of Mitch to his college professor Morrie every Tuesday became lessons on how to live life. With this, Tuesdays with Morrie is the outcome of the remaining time they spent together while Morrie is nearing to his death. The story began with a flashback of Mitch s Graduation Day. I learned that in life, we should not let go soon but also, we should not hang on too long. It s alright to still hope for something/someone you want until you get the chance to get it but sometimes, patience is not always the answer; waiting for so long to nothing is a waste of time and we should not let his happen. Another thing is I also learned about contentment; We should learn to accept what we are able to do and what we aren t able to do. People have their own assets and imperfections and to deal with them, it would be just a matter of acceptance; acceptance of who we are and what we are not. I recommend this book to all the people especially those who are in need of motivation or even people who are becoming hopeless and feeling worthless. This is not just an ordinary book which tells true story, but also, this is a story which will really touch the hearts of those who will be reading this. • 8. Transactional Strategies At New York University Key Points The topic of Wade Boykin speech at New York University was academic success for all students, but more specifically students of color. He discussed the documentation and evidence that explains the achievement gap between students of color and their white counterparts. Boykin also believes the evidence for why the gap exists should be the guide for implementing strategies, inventions and programs to raise achievement. The evidence and research suggest that to raise achievement the intervention should start with transactional strategies. Transactional strategies involve the exchanges between teachers and students, classroom collaboration, and classroom environment. The specific focuses of the transactional strategies are student engagement, positive self efficacy and teacher student relationship quality (TSRQ). Research shows that student engagement leads to greater success for students of color in math and reading, instilling positive self efficacy helps build confidence, perseverance and hold students accountable for their own learning and teacher student relationships gives the opportunity for meaningful learning experiences and intellectual exchanges. Comparison with the Text Boykin s speech and the book Creating the Opportunity to Learn correlates in relations to explaining the dimensions of the achievement gap and the strategies that can raise achievement for students of colors. Athens had a democracy with a very high citizen participation. Athens had a democracy where there was large amounts of participation in it. An example of this would be the Vase in Document 1, it shows multiple Athenian people that are working together on a project. In Document 1, one of the people is an Athenian Soldier, based on what he is wearing, and the others working appear to be Athenian citizens. The vase appears to show teamwork and unity between the men, which is also another sign of a democracy. Another example of the participation is in Document 2, which is a quote from the Celestine s. This mentions a people party, in which is a political party that is to be made up Athenians citizens that make laws and governing. Two Examples Of Black Power-Era Nationalism In Hip Hop Nas nother example of Black Power era nationalism in hip hop is New York rapper Nas s song Black Zombies, where he advocates for Black owned businesses as a way to gain freedom from the oppression that Black Americans face from white controlled social, economic, and political systems through the lyrics: What do we own? Not enough land, not enough homes Not enough banks, to give a brother a loan So stop being controlled, we Black zombies (lines 13 15) While afrocentrism tended to focused on minimizing European influence on culture, Black Power era nationalism had different scales of nationalism that advocated for various ideologies that were more political or economic. • 12. Stigma Of Ex-Convicts Stigma is a point of disgrace that breaks a person apart from normal people. When a person is labelled by their past karma they are seen as a part of a stereotyped group. One group of people I think deserves better understanding is the ex convicts . These people struggle under their life long stigma that comes with the label of ex convict . Confucianism And Daoism Essay Confucianism and Daoism affected the social structure of early China through culture, education, and government though the effects varied greatly between these two beliefs. Culture in China is different due to the teachings of Confucianism that began when Confucius was age twenty three, as well as the teachings of Daoism because both teachings believed in harmony and living tranquilly. The Protestant Government and Law in Reformation Theology The Protestant Reformation s initiation through Martin Luther s criticism of the Catholic Church with his Ninety Five Theses brought about a united front of Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, and Martin Luther and their attempts to reform the Catholic Church, all of whom eventually split from the Church and started their own religious movements. As the Reformation movement flourished under each leader, their theological differences eventually split the movements apart drastically, their differences eventually turning into a massive feud between Zwingli and Luther, each declaring the other as a heretic [1]. Of their many differences, their opinions on the relationship between religion and the state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Calvin had a very similar viewpoint to Zwingli s beliefs on the authority of the church and state, with some slight differences regarding the level of importance placed upon the church. In agreement with Zwingli, Calvin affirmed that if it be his pleasure to appoint kings over kingdoms, and senators or other magistrates over free cities, it is our duty to be obedient to any governors whom God has established over the places in which we reside [3]. While Zwingli placed more of a balance upon the relationship between the state and church, Calvin asserted that the state only held authority as a direct result of the church, the authority directly approved of by God. In his view, any influential entities within the state only held their influence under God. Calvin first pushed for his theology to be implemented after writing Institutes of the Christian Religion, attempting to reform the religious life within Geneva, Switzerland for two years until he and a contemporary, William Farel refused to adopt religious practices enforced in other parts of Switzerland. Calvin escaped the city under persecution, only to return in 1541 once the council of Geneva had finally agreed to implement his previous reforms under the diminishing influence of the church there. Achilleus realizes that despite his desires, mortality binds him. He recognizes the broken system of the Greek heroism and struggles with the concept of mortality. In Greek legend, Zeus, knowing that an immortal son of a powerful goddess like Thetis would overthrow him, married off Thetis unwillingly to a mortal, thereby dooming all of her children to mortality. Thus, robbed of his divinity, Achilleus constantly reaches for it, knowing it is rightfully his. He recognizes an almost divine power within himself, but realizes that his capability is chained by his mortality. Where most Homeric characters are enabled by the gods, Achilleus is restrained by them; he possesses a heroic consciousness of the cosmos, divinity, and mortality. However, for the love of Patroklos, Achilleus stops grasping at the divinity which is rightfully his and chooses a diminishment in mortality. Though Achillleus chooses a seemingly lower role and submits to his mortality, this choice is ultimately what makes him the hero of the Iliad. Rather than seeking personal glory, he embraces mortality and sacrifices himself for the redemption of a friend. Thus by embracing his mortality, Achilleus becomes something more than a mortal, achieving a level of heroism not even the gods can posses. Red spots on the patient begin to turn black, while others turn white, the individual experiences strong delirium, hemorrhages of blood at the anus, mouth, and nose, raw flesh from the stripping of the skin, and fistulous ulcers in the ligaments, body, limbs, and joints. Dependence in a group is seen as members blaming someone or something else for their awkward feeling and either becoming dysfunctional when the group becomes overly dependent on members, or having a positive outcome if the group comes together and rallies to succeed (Bright, 2011). I experienced both sides of dependence when my former employer made major changes to the leadership of the organization. The leader that was put in place was rarely there and had a separate agenda from the organization. At first a few of us banded together to keep things at status quo, but after a while we gave up and I became emotionally detached from the organization. Fight flight behavior is evident when there is ambiguity. Disruptive conflict between members of the group is the fight aspect and the flight aspect is when members mentally shut down and no longer participate in the group (Bright, 2011). Neither behavior is productive in a group, but can be turned into a positive if recognized and dealt with proactively; communication is the key. • 31. Literary Criticism In To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate... Literary criticism is defined as an informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature. An example of a literary criticism is intertextual criticism, which is a comparison of two literary works in terms of symbols, themes, characters, and other criteria. In the fictitious novels To Kill a Mockingbird and A Separate Peace, Harper Lee and John Knowles use intertextual criticism to allow the reader to associate the novel with other works and establish connections. Throughout the stories A Separate Peace and To Kill A Mockingbird, the stories contain several similarities in terms of loss of innocence, using a tree as a symbol of friendship, and using the scapegoat archetype. Loss of innocence was addressed in both novels in similar ways. When Phineas exhibited confusion at Gene s studying habits, Gene felt like his brain exploded, he minded, despised the possibility that I might be head of the school (Knowles 45). In both works of literature, a sudden realization triggered a loss of innocence and change in attitude. In this case, when Gene found out that Phineas minded that he could be the top of their class, he interpreted it as Phineas being envious and wanting him to fail. Gene thinking that Phineas wants him to fail completely changed the dynamic of their relationship and Gene s naive thoughts of him and Phineas having a healthy friendship. Comparably, when Brinker confronted Phineas and Gene about the tree incident, the words shocked Phineas into awareness (Knowles 167). When Phineas realized the true reason behind his injury, Phineas s character, specifically in the way he acted towards Gene, was affected. Phineas had spent the majority of the novel in denial of Gene s crimes and when he found out he came to the realization that not everyone was on his side. With this comes his loss of naivety and his undying love for life were compromised. Similarly in To Kill A Mockingbird, when Jem found out the true views of Maycomb it was, Jem s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears...it ain t fair (Lee 243). Similar to the previous two examples Jem was a young boy who after hearing the verdict of the trial, comes to the realization of the true working of Maycomb. After seeing ...
