Description:
The Evermay Sec. 7B (0418UG) Underground Detention Facility Replacement project was substantially completed on July 11, 2018. The
site is located within the Pimmit Run Watershed. The project improvements replaced the failed underground gravel detention facility
constructed in the 1970’s with a new detention system. Improvements were also made to the existing storm drainage system with the
installation of four new manholes and one inlet structure. This project provides a reduction of 1.6 pounds of total phosphorous, 18.6
pounds of total nitrogen and 1,246 pounds of sediment per year.
Project Overview:
• Removal of multiple small trees, corrugated metal pipe (CMP), yard drain inlet and gravel from within the existing facility.
• Installation of approximately 2,200 tons of a new VDOT #57 stone and StormTech SC-740 arch pipe chamber system.
• Addition of a flow diversion structure, associated 24” RCP pipe and a new outfall control structure.
• Upgraded access road to support a flusher/vacuum truck for future maintenance.
• Seismic vibration monitoring occurred during construction along the access road between the dwellings at 6287 and 6285
Dunaway Court and adjacent to the tennis courts.
• All the disturbed area was restored with 6” of topsoil, seeded and mulched.

The work on this project included investigation and repair to an 8-inch sewer line in Waterway Drive which had been previously lined with a plastic liner system. The project location was in Waterway Drive from Cavalier Court to the vicinity of Half Moon Circle. The project involved setting up a bypass system to remove sewage from the line so the pipe could be properly cleaned and inspected. Following this process, it was determined the plastic liner was causing capacity issues. It was determined that the liner could be repaired using internal methods and no excavation was needed. In addition, the five manholes associated with the segments of pipe in the project area were also rehabilitated. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

The Meadow Run (0273DP) Pond Improvement project in Fairfax County, VA was substantially completed on February 25, 2019. The project replaced a deteriorating control structure and primary spillway, increased the storage volume, and incorporated water quality improvements like extended detention and wetland plantings. It also upgraded the maintenance access with a geoblock road. The project aimed to improve water quality in the Bull Neck Run Watershed by accommodating more stormwater runoff and lengthening its flow path through the pond.

The project will facilitate improved sediment removal and improve downstream water quality using forebays and micro pools. Aquatic and natural habitat were also added within the three basins.

This project improved drainage and reduced flood potential in a Fairfax County community. It installed a headwall, yard inlet, and pedestrian bridge with handrails to increase water flow into the storm sewer system. The project cleared land, excavated, installed structures, widened a swale, added landscaping and restored the site with native plants. It was completed in May 2014 by a project team from the county's Maintenance and Stormwater Management and Utilities Design and Construction divisions.

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services conducted an emergency repair project at Graham Park Plaza to replace approximately 60 feet of broken 8-inch wastewater sewer pipe and retrieve a CCTV camera that was stuck in the pipe during routine maintenance. The project involved communicating with business owners, excavating to retrieve the camera, removing the broken pipe and installing new PVC pipe and laterals, and restoring the work site. The project was completed on May 14, 2021.

Herrity Stormwater Pond Retrofit

The Herrity Stormwater Pond Retrofit is located in front of the Penino/Herrity/Public Safety building complex and within the Difficult Run Watershed. The project removed sediment, repaired the step pool conveyance system, upgraded the maintenance access, added aquatic and riparian plantings, and removed non-native invasive species. The project also added a system which allows runoff to be kept in place longer thus giving time for sediment, chemicals and pollutants to separate and remain in the basin while clean water is released into waterways. The dredging and addition of the OptiRTC system now allows the facility to provide a reduction of 0.2 pounds of total phosphorous, 1.5 pounds of total nitrogen and 162.7 pounds of sediment per year.

Scotts Run Tributary at Windy Hill Road Stream Stabilization

This stream stabilization is located within the Scotts Run Watershed in McLean, Va. The project restored 600 feet of intermittent stream using natural channel design, installed a new drop inlet, 32 linear feet of 36-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, an end wall at Box Elder Court, and installation of instream structures such as rock weir, imbricated toe protection, step pools, reinforced bed material.

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration Project

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration project was substantially completed on November 23, 2021. This project consists of restoring, enhancing, and stabilizing of approximately 4,900 linear feet of stream channel through the installation of four Newbury Riffles within the main channel of Accotink Creek and one Newbury Riffle within a side channel to provide aquatic benefits, grade control, improve water quality and prevent further erosion.

The Wastewater Collection Division inspected the pipe and identified a break that appeared to have been caused by a utility cross bore from a utility pole which was visible on the pipe inspection video. The Wastewater Design and Construction Division kicked off an expedited design and construction project to address this damaged sewer pipe. The project included the installation of roughly 350-feet of 8-inch diameter gravity sewer, 4 new manholes, 2 sewer reconnections, and abandonment-in-place of roughly 350-feet of old 8-inch diameter clay pipe. This project was substantially complete on June 4, 2021.

During a routine Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera inspection by Wastewater Collection Division (WCD), it was found that 45 linear feet of 8-inch asbestos reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between MH-292 to MH-291 was within imminent danger of failing. The bottom of the RCP was missing within the 45 linear feet of repair and the pipe was on the verge of surcharging. After an immediate pre-construction meeting with Merrifield Nursery, it was agreed to work from 6pm-10am everyday of the week to avoid disruption and potentially placing patrons at risk during the biggest time of the year for Merrifield Garden Center. The contractor mobilized to the site and began the 20-foot excavation to replace 45 linear feet of broken gravity sewer. The project started on March 14th, 2022 and was substantially complete on March 23, 2022.

Using Mackinder's Heartland, Spykman Rimland, and Hegemonic Stability theories, examines China's role in Central Asia. This study analyze primary and secondary research documents critically to elaborate role of china’s geo economic outreach in central Asian countries and its future prospect. China is thriving in trade, pipeline politics, and winning states, according to this study, thanks to important instruments like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Belt and Road Economic Initiative. According to this study, China is seeing significant success in commerce, pipeline politics, and gaining influence on other governments. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. Medical image analysis has witnessed significant advancements with deep learning techniques. In the domain of brain tumor segmentation, the ability to precisely delineate tumor boundaries from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans holds profound implications for diagnosis. This study presents an ensemble convolutional neural network (CNN) with transfer learning, integrating the state-of-the-art Deeplabv3+ architecture with the ResNet18 backbone. The model is rigorously trained and evaluated, exhibiting remarkable performance metrics, including an impressive global accuracy of 99.286%, a high-class accuracy of 82.191%, a mean intersection over union (IoU) of 79.900%, a weighted IoU of 98.620%, and a Boundary F1 (BF) score of 83.303%. Notably, a detailed comparative analysis with existing methods showcases the superiority of our proposed model. These findings underscore the model’s competence in precise brain tumor localization, underscoring its potential to revolutionize medical image analysis and enhance healthcare outcomes. This research paves the way for future exploration and optimization of advanced CNN models in medical imaging, emphasizing addressing false positives and resource efficiency.

DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODEL

As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3) represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities. Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition, our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection accuracy rate of 99.50%.

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoring

Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

The site is located within the Pimmit Run Watershed. The project improvements replaced the failed underground gravel detention facility constructed in the 1970’s with a new detention system. Improvements were also made to the existing storm drainage system with the installation of four new manholes and one inlet structure. This project provides a reduction of 1.6 pounds of total phosphorous, 18.6 pounds of total nitrogen and 1,246 pounds of sediment per year. Project Overview: • Removal of multiple small trees, corrugated metal pipe (CMP), yard drain inlet and gravel from within the existing facility. • Installation of approximately 2,200 tons of a new VDOT #57 stone and StormTech SC-740 arch pipe chamber system. • Addition of a flow diversion structure, associated 24” RCP pipe and a new outfall control structure. • Upgraded access road to support a flusher/vacuum truck for future maintenance. • Seismic vibration monitoring occurred during construction along the access road between the dwellings at 6287 and 6285 Dunaway Court and adjacent to the tennis courts. • All the disturbed area was restored with 6” of topsoil, seeded and mulched.
