2. Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth
In my magazine, I followed some of Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth. The Beauty
Myth is the idea that women in the media are used to attract the audience with
their outfits and the way they look. She also said that women are sexualised and
dominated by men. Models that are used in the media are often airbrushed and
photo shopped to create the idea of ‘flawlessness’. She also says that products
use pictures of sexually attractive women to appeal to women because they
have been conditioned by patriarchal society to want to be like the current
model of beauty. Have you done this? Yes – so there’s your appeal to women.
3. How did I use this theory in my magazine?
In my magazine I used photos of a woman who’s skin looks airbrushed and
had make up on which links in with the idea of ‘Flawlessness’.
Also in the photo used on my double page spread the model has her mouth
slightly open, which is a common pose for models in magazines.
I used pictures of a sexually attractive women to appeal to women because they
will see the woman on the front cover and want to be like her. So this means
my magazine will appeal to women.
