2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Evaluation Question 5
1.
2. Research and Planning
Before I started making my product, I did lots of research into my target
audience, and found out who my target audience was. I has a Questionnaire
to use and asked people about what they wanted in a magazine, I then tried to
apply this feedback to my product. One of the questions was about font, and
one person said the font was too basic but there is variety of font on the page,
so I decided to use a variety of fonts on my front cover. I also asked a question
about the masthead, whether it should be the width of the page or not. One
person said if you can see it, it doesn’t matter, but another said it takes up a
lot of the page, and I agreed with this. There is also other things that I decided
to incorporate from my feedback too. I said in my secondary research that I
wanted to aim for both genders, but then I decided later in my production to
aim mostly for males, because it looks more appropriate for them. I also
looked at reader profiles from professional magazines, and this helped me
make my own reader profile and found out who my target audience.
3. Audience Feedback –
Questionnaire
1. What draws your attention to the product?
2. What genre is it and how do you know?
3. What social groups does it represent and how?
4. Do you think the house style is appropriate for the genre?
How?
5. Do you think my choice of models are appropriate for the
genre?
4. Person 1
1. The title of the magazine, it is very big and bold, and also eye catching.
2. It’s a rock magazine, I can tell by the colours and it says ‘The UK’s biggest rock
magazine at the top of the front cover.
3. I would say young teenage boys, that are quite punky and like this kind of music.
4. Yes, the red and black are appropriate for the genre, and reading through the
contents page and the dps shows that it is also a rock magazine.
5. Yes, I like the onesie on the front cover a lot, it shows a young rebellious figure, and
the model on the dps shows an old rock star, he is also wearing a cool outfit.
5. Person 2
1. The model on the front cover, I like how the only colour is the red cross on the
onesie, and also the guitar looks very big.
2. It’s a rock magazine, I can tell by the colours and also the the band name choices,
they sound like rock bands.
3. This is quite hard, I would say young teenagers, both genders, I think that the
models would appeal to females, and the content would appeal to males.
4. The colours are very appropriate, you see this colour scheme on other magazines
too. The fonts are also quite varied throughout which is good.
5. Yes, the model on the dps shows an old rock star, which I like the idea of, and the
model on the front cover has a onesie on, which I think doesn’t really show a rock
and roll figure.
6. Person 3
1. The model with the guitar on the front cover, it’s almost in your face.
2. Rock, I can tell by the use of colours, and also the guitar on the front cover too.
3. Teenagers, I think that it would appeal to both genders because they both like this
music equally.
4. Yes, I like the layout of the contents page, it has a big photo at the top and all the
information at the bottom, which I have seen in professional magazines.
5. I like the models pose on the front cover, it shows that he is rebellious and doesn’t
care, also he is wearing a onesie, and the model on the dps has a blank face, which
shows a similar thing, but they are both smiling on the contents page, which shows
that they are nice guys in real life.
7. Person 4
1. Probably the huge R on the front cover, it is in front on the model and it is very big
and eye catching.
2. It is a rock/punk magazine, a bit like Kerrang. I can tell by the colours used and it
says ‘the UK’s biggest rock magazine’.
3. I would say teenage boys, but also older people, as the article on the dps is an old
figure, so they would like to read about him.
4. The house style looks very nice, I can tell you tried to keep it up. I like the colours
too, and the variation of fonts.
5. I like the onesie that’s on the front cover, this would appeal to young people,
because it shows that he can relate to them. And the model on the dps has some
nice poses, I like the smiling one on the contents page.
8.

10. Question 2
My feedback for this question shows that 100% of
my audience said they know it’s a rock magazine.
11. Question 3
My feedback for this also says that 100% of my
audience said that they represent a young teenager.
50% of them said that they are suitable for both
genders. Which shows there are things that appeal
to females, which could be the male models, or the
general theme.
12. Question 4
100% of my audience said that the colour scheme
was appropriate for the genre, 50% of them said that
they liked the variations of fonts, and the layout is
similar to other magazines.
13. Question 5
25% of audience said that they don’t think the onesie
was appropriate for the genre, but 75% said that they
do, which is good, they all said that they liked the
models pose on the dps and contents page, which
shows that this model is appealing in some way.

15. Models, Costume and Props
I had 2 models, for the front cover model I chose a union
jack onesie, to show that he is playful, and also a huge
British star. I tried to show that he is rebellious through his
facial expressions, and also made him hold a guitar to show
he is a famous guitarist too. For my DPS model, I tried to
make him look like an old rock star, so I came up with a very
basic outfit for him, plain white t and black jeans, and I also
tried to make him look cool by tilting his head and having no
facial expression, and also make him look like a fun guy by
having him smile on he contents page.
16. House Style
I tried to vary my fonts as much as possible in order to make the magazine
more interesting, I used a font for the R so it had a long tail, because that was
my original idea to find a font like that. I also tried to maintain my house style
throughout my magazine, and tried to make it look as professional as possible
by looking at professional magazines. There is also a huge difference between
my rough cut magazine and my final magazine. I decided that it all looked very
boring, so I needed to bring in more colours, and change the layout. For
example, on my front cover, I changed the position of the sell line, and also
made my masthead a lot bigger. On my contents page I changed the layout
completely, by putting all the contents at the bottom, and having a new image
at the top of a live band. I also put a picture of myself in and a little article
about what I say. I changed my DPS by making a large quote in different
colours, and making the article a lot smaller, I also made the whole
background grey, with a but of noise added to it. I think my magazine looks a
lo better now.
