What Kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
Whatkindofpublishinghouse
mightownyourmagazine?
Reggae and dancehall are genres that aren’t as prevalent in music magazine
sales, but the publishing house L3 would probably the best to own it. L3 deal
with almost deal with any music associated with the Caribbean, especially
reggae music. To have a publishing house that owns other magazines in the
same genre would be smart because they would have experience in knowing
the best way to distribute and market my magazine. It does sound superficial,
however I feel that I couldn’t use many other publishing house is as well known
as L3. Alternatively, I could experiment with using the publishing house of a hip-
hop magazine due to the fact that both of the target audiences have similar
target demographic. Trying a reggae magazine out with a record label that
doesn’t market toward my target demographic isn’t smart because, with the
genre of reggae, it is mainly people who are exposed to it and those who are
influenced by their parents that like it. It is unlikely that it would appeal to a
different demographic.
Where might your magazine be
distributed?
Well, I think that my magazine would be sold in newsagents. However I think that due to the
evolution of shopping and the diminishing state of the high street, I would like it to be sold on
the internet as well. The internet is a popular to purchase items in this age. With new
technology such as iPads, I think it would be worthwhile to make it so there would be an app
where they can purchase a downloadable copy to take wherever they please. In addition, I think
that it would be a good idea to make my magazine available at sound systems such as Jah Sahka
in South London, there are usually many people that attend these events.
Howfrequentlywillthemagazinebe
circulated?
The usual conventions for reggae magazines is to be released
every month. I had the idea to release mine fortnightly. I believe
that if I leave too long of a gap between releases then there
would be a lot of irrelevant news and information, however if it
released frequently then it will contain news that is most recent.
Within the reggae genre, the music is considered most important
and there is always one artist that is releasing a new album or
single and there is always an artist making a comeback when
their career seemed dead. Furthermore, the more frequently a
magazine is released, the lower the price is. In a survey I took, 13
out of 16 people want to pay less when they purchase a
magazine.
Will it be available through subscription?
Due to the fact that my magazine will be released every fortnight, I don’t
think it will be necessary for it to be available through subscription. The
magazine will have a frequent circulation there would be no need.
However with subscriptions, it will allow consumers to never miss an
issue and due to the limited publicity that they receive they might miss
some issues that are released.
Whatdatadoyouhaveonmagazinesalesinyouowngenre-
aremagazinesinyourgenresellingwell?
• Well, due to the genre of magazine that I have chosen (reggae and
dancehall) it is very difficult to find evidence of magazine sales in
this genre.
• The genre of reggae is a very niche market so it is safe to assume
that the sales of reggae magazines aren’t very high. It is likely that a
magazine in this genre would have a set number of followers from
its release and it is unlikely that the number of people would
fluctuate greatly.
• I think that these magazines have decent sales as from some
research done before hand.
