In what ways does your
media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Foxes- Let go for tonight. Lisa Hannigan- Knots.
In both of these music videos you can
see that there has obviously been a
massive paint/food fight between the
two, we thought as a two that if our
performers splattered paint over each
other it would be a very effectual way
of showing the audience that the
song and the lyrics are all about ‘fun’.
Another connection between them is
the camera shots, all three of the music
videos are all filmed at a wide shot
making sure that every single bit is in the
video. Another similarity throughout the
‘Let go for tonight’ music video is the
dusty affect on top of the normal clip,
making the video look more professional
and also quite ‘jaggered’ to create a
home video affect.
In music videos like these it seems
conventional to use bright paints and
empty spaces to make the paint
splattering stand out a lot more and
look more effective. Another thing
my video has done is ‘playacting’ like
most other videos do too, by making
it look like the performers are playing
it fits in nicely with the actual genre
of the video.
Ariana Grande- Focus Rita Ora- R.I.P
This specific extreme close up on the
performers mouth that we shot is also
in quite a lot of music videos, mostly
females. However, you will only ever
see this specific shot if the performer
themselves are confident with their
teeth, mouth and skin. The performers
also always seem to have either
lipstick or lip gloss on which could
have been and EBI for next time.
This extreme close up is a very
efficient way of getting the
audience to not only focus clearly
on the lips but also on the actual
lyrics of the song. This is another
good way to get the audience to get
a feel for the genre, lyrics, and the
actual point that the video/song is
putting across to the audience.
This also links into Laura Mulvey’s
theory the ‘male gaze’ which she
explains to say about the way, 1 Men
look at women 2 How women look and
themselves and 3 how women look at
other women. This links into my video
nicely as it shows how women look at
themselves, meaning how they are
confident to have extreme close ups.
This is also a convention to most media
texts, not just music videos.
Pixie Lott- Break up song. Beyoncé- Blue Ivy.
By using a home video effect it
makes the videos look more like a
video that you’ve filmed yourself
and not professionally which
works the same way as a hand
held camera. It gives the audience
the idea that the video was shot
themselves with an average
camera.
Quite a lot of music videos have
this specific effect on them just
to create this look. Even though
we have actually used the
professional cameras to film
these clips by putting this effect
on the top of the clip it gives it
the look of a natural and home
filmed video.
When making my music video I
asked my performers to do a
numerous amount of things to
make sure the video didn't look
'acted’. For example:
Wear something you
would on an everyday
basis.
Try not to look behind the
camera, as this would
make it look like the
performers had
instructions to follow.
For the paint scene all I said was
“throw paint and have fun” the rest
of it just followed with the fun that
we were all having which also made
it look natural and not planned.
Another thing I said was “just
have fun and enjoy it, there’s
nothing worse than a fake
smile.”
Try not to actually talk that much
during filming as it could look like
you are singing but do not know the
words-risky!!
How does my music video link with Andrew
Goodwin’s theory of 6?
Video and Gaming:
By listening to the song in our
music video you can see that the
video should be a fun and fast
video, which is why they link so well
together. The clips that I shot were
all fun in different ways showing
that the content of it was linking
into Andrew’s theory. Goodwin
explains that the genre of the track,
song or artist will dedicate and
determine the look of the video.
Lyrics and Visuals:
“Relationship between the lyrics of
the song and the visuals of the video.”
Example: Miley Cyrus’ song ‘Wrecking
Ball’ has a wrecking ball in it. In my
music video it shows a clip of the
performer Ryan splattering paint and
having fun by himself just as the lyrics
say “ain’t it fun, being all alone“. Also
when the song says “you’re not a big
fish in the
pond no more” the video at that point shows the performers on a park,
something you wouldn’t usually see young adults of this day doing. I
also got Chloe to write ‘fun’ on the floor in paint, which looks extremely
adequate as the world ‘fun’ is mentioned in the song quite a lot of
times.
How does my music video link with Andrew
Goodwin’s theory of 6?
Voyeurism:
A lot of eye contact with the camera is used
in my music video which really makes the
audience feel like they are
performing/singing to them, this also makes
them feel as though they are apart of the
performance which gets them more
expressive and excited about the video. The
screenshots around are clips from my video
which show evidence to support where the
voyeurism comes into the performance.
How does my music video link with Andrew
Goodwin’s theory of 6?
Intertextuality:
I would definitely say that my music video is a ‘performance’ as we filmed the song itself being performed,
especially sections like Chloe singing. However, from another point of view I would also say that it was
‘narrative’ too as there was a slight storyline behind each video, as the song was all about having fun the
performance and video that came with it all linked in together to make it a mixture between performance and
narrative.
Overall Andrew Goodwin’s theory of 6 really helped me out when creating my music video. I used a lot of his
techniques because of the level of success he has gained. These specific techniques that I used, Video &
Gaming, Lyrics & Visuals, Voyeurism and Intertextuality all helped me to create an extremely effective,
entertaining video which alongside it making sure the video still links with everything that comes with it, such
as, lyrics, colour, filming, performance, digipacks, magazine adverts etc..
Music and Visuals:
The way that I linked my music video to the music and visuals of Andrew Goodwin’s theory was the way that
the pace of the editing matched the beat and the visuals of the music video, this was very a good and clear
link with Goodwin’s theory and made my music video very successful.

Evaluation question 1

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 2. Foxes- Let go for tonight. Lisa Hannigan- Knots. In both of these music videos you can see that there has obviously been a massive paint/food fight between the two, we thought as a two that if our performers splattered paint over each other it would be a very effectual way of showing the audience that the song and the lyrics are all about ‘fun’. Another connection between them is the camera shots, all three of the music videos are all filmed at a wide shot making sure that every single bit is in the video. Another similarity throughout the ‘Let go for tonight’ music video is the dusty affect on top of the normal clip, making the video look more professional and also quite ‘jaggered’ to create a home video affect. In music videos like these it seems conventional to use bright paints and empty spaces to make the paint splattering stand out a lot more and look more effective. Another thing my video has done is ‘playacting’ like most other videos do too, by making it look like the performers are playing it fits in nicely with the actual genre of the video.
  • 3. Ariana Grande- Focus Rita Ora- R.I.P This specific extreme close up on the performers mouth that we shot is also in quite a lot of music videos, mostly females. However, you will only ever see this specific shot if the performer themselves are confident with their teeth, mouth and skin. The performers also always seem to have either lipstick or lip gloss on which could have been and EBI for next time. This extreme close up is a very efficient way of getting the audience to not only focus clearly on the lips but also on the actual lyrics of the song. This is another good way to get the audience to get a feel for the genre, lyrics, and the actual point that the video/song is putting across to the audience. This also links into Laura Mulvey’s theory the ‘male gaze’ which she explains to say about the way, 1 Men look at women 2 How women look and themselves and 3 how women look at other women. This links into my video nicely as it shows how women look at themselves, meaning how they are confident to have extreme close ups. This is also a convention to most media texts, not just music videos.
  • 4. Pixie Lott- Break up song. Beyoncé- Blue Ivy. By using a home video effect it makes the videos look more like a video that you’ve filmed yourself and not professionally which works the same way as a hand held camera. It gives the audience the idea that the video was shot themselves with an average camera. Quite a lot of music videos have this specific effect on them just to create this look. Even though we have actually used the professional cameras to film these clips by putting this effect on the top of the clip it gives it the look of a natural and home filmed video.
  • 5. When making my music video I asked my performers to do a numerous amount of things to make sure the video didn't look 'acted’. For example: Wear something you would on an everyday basis. Try not to look behind the camera, as this would make it look like the performers had instructions to follow. For the paint scene all I said was “throw paint and have fun” the rest of it just followed with the fun that we were all having which also made it look natural and not planned. Another thing I said was “just have fun and enjoy it, there’s nothing worse than a fake smile.” Try not to actually talk that much during filming as it could look like you are singing but do not know the words-risky!!
  • 6. How does my music video link with Andrew Goodwin’s theory of 6? Video and Gaming: By listening to the song in our music video you can see that the video should be a fun and fast video, which is why they link so well together. The clips that I shot were all fun in different ways showing that the content of it was linking into Andrew’s theory. Goodwin explains that the genre of the track, song or artist will dedicate and determine the look of the video. Lyrics and Visuals: “Relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals of the video.” Example: Miley Cyrus’ song ‘Wrecking Ball’ has a wrecking ball in it. In my music video it shows a clip of the performer Ryan splattering paint and having fun by himself just as the lyrics say “ain’t it fun, being all alone“. Also when the song says “you’re not a big fish in the pond no more” the video at that point shows the performers on a park, something you wouldn’t usually see young adults of this day doing. I also got Chloe to write ‘fun’ on the floor in paint, which looks extremely adequate as the world ‘fun’ is mentioned in the song quite a lot of times.
  • 7. How does my music video link with Andrew Goodwin’s theory of 6? Voyeurism: A lot of eye contact with the camera is used in my music video which really makes the audience feel like they are performing/singing to them, this also makes them feel as though they are apart of the performance which gets them more expressive and excited about the video. The screenshots around are clips from my video which show evidence to support where the voyeurism comes into the performance.
  • 8. How does my music video link with Andrew Goodwin’s theory of 6? Intertextuality: I would definitely say that my music video is a ‘performance’ as we filmed the song itself being performed, especially sections like Chloe singing. However, from another point of view I would also say that it was ‘narrative’ too as there was a slight storyline behind each video, as the song was all about having fun the performance and video that came with it all linked in together to make it a mixture between performance and narrative. Overall Andrew Goodwin’s theory of 6 really helped me out when creating my music video. I used a lot of his techniques because of the level of success he has gained. These specific techniques that I used, Video & Gaming, Lyrics & Visuals, Voyeurism and Intertextuality all helped me to create an extremely effective, entertaining video which alongside it making sure the video still links with everything that comes with it, such as, lyrics, colour, filming, performance, digipacks, magazine adverts etc.. Music and Visuals: The way that I linked my music video to the music and visuals of Andrew Goodwin’s theory was the way that the pace of the editing matched the beat and the visuals of the music video, this was very a good and clear link with Goodwin’s theory and made my music video very successful.
