2. Finding a client
When we started this project I hade already got in contact with my client. I
did this through my dad who works for the police. He got me in contact with
his boss. We then had a meeting where I showed him some ideas and some
thoughts that I had and we had a conversation which lead to him also given
me some ideas on what he wanted and how he wanted it laying out. My
client wanted me to make a poster and also a poster for twitter which they
could tweet out when they use the dot peen machine. Also my client
contacted the dot peen team and I got in touch with them and was able to
spend a couple of hours with them taking some images and getting a feel for
the machine. I was also contacted by the media team which gave me the
specific logos and the fonts they used when they would create a poster.
3. Working with a client
Once I knew what the client wanted from the chat we had I made a poster that was catered
to hit the target audience and make it eye catching. I sent this first before making the twitter
poster this was because I planned to make the poster on twitter similar to the poster they
would use with the machine. Then my client got back to me with some ideas they had and
changes they believed needed to happen. I then made these changes they had asked for
and then started making the poster for twitter. Also from the changes they wanted I also
made some changes myself, for example they wanted the crest to be bigger so I got rid of
the red banner at the top as I felt this was the reason it was small and squished, the client
was not bothered by this and I explained my decision in a email. Also due to get in contact
with the media team I was able to find out the font they use, which then lead to a change in
font to match there other posters. Once I made the changes and they were happy with them
I finalized the poster for twitter and then sent both to the client. They then sent it to other
people working in the same department as my client and also the sergeant of the north
Yorkshire police. I didn't get anymore emails from my client saying weather they would be
using the poster but my dad had a chat with my client and he said that him and many others
like it but did not say if they were going to use it.
4. This is the brief I was sent by my
client, it was very brief which allowed
me to be creative with my ideas and
try some different techniques and
colour schemes. The main goal for
the poster was to make it eye
catching by using bright colours and
images that make it stand out more
than the original. It was meant to
appeal to a younger audience as the
original didn't really appeal to the
younger audience and it was plain
and boring so I had to make
something that gave it a lively feel.
The only things that I needed to use
and make sure where on the poster
was the crest and the logo that were
put at the bottom of the posters.

production weeks.

8. Managing the project
I feel like I managed my time well and stuck to my plan that I set up. I have also
made something that hopefully they will want to use in the future to replace he
poster they have know. I tried to take everything they said into consideration
and try to stick to the brief. I managed my time well as I was able to complete
the posters in the first week which gave my plenty of time to get any
improvements done in the second week. By the end of the second week my
client was happy with the work I had produced and they believed it was a big
improvement on the one the have know. I ended up sticking to my schedule
plan as my plan was to do most of the work in the first week and then put the
finishing touches on the product in the second week. The posters did take less
time than I expected them to and I thought that there may have been more
improvements given by my client but the ones they gave were easy fixes and did
not take very long to complete.
9. Requirements of the brief
I feel like the brief gave me the opportunity to be as creative as I wanted, as there
was not much to the brief. I tried to stick to the brief and kept looking at the
poster and seeing if this would get me interested and want to find out more as
my age group was the target audience. I also kept looking to see if the poster
would catch my eye and was interesting otherwise I would not of being sticking
to the brief as if I didn't find it eye catching then people my age would also have
the same opinion. Also the brief wanted me to make sure that I used the
sponsors of the dot peen which I made sure I did. I put them in a similar position
to the original poster and I did this first to make sure It was done. But a lot of
information was talked about at our chat that we had before creating the poster.
Which I found out a lot of what was wanted on the poster and my mock ups that I
created, they had a look at and pick out some things they liked which I ended up
adding to the final product.
10. What have you learnt
The skills I have learnt during this project is how to work to a brief. I also learnt how to work with a client, I found
this to be a great learning experience. I found out that it can be hard to do what is expected of you when all you get
are emails every couple of days saying what you can improve. I would be much easier if I was able to meet the client
more often as I would be able to get all the changes in one session instead of multiple emails. It can also allow you
to bring up other options and get there opinion there and then instead of waiting. I have also learned that the client
can make the project easy or hard depending on how much information they give you in your brief. The less
information can make it hard to make as you don’t know much of what they want and it allows you to be creative
but that does not mean that the client likes it. But if they give you lots of information it can make it easier to make
exactly what they wanted but does not allow for much creativity. I have learnt that communication is very important
when working to a brief because if you and the client are not communicating well it can become hard to know what
is wanted from the client. Also having lots of communication can make it clearer to what the client wants and gives
you more opportunities to explore with the client. I also believe this allowed me to be more creative due to the lack
of information from the client. I believe this project helped me get better at laying out the content in the best way.
Also using the typography allowed me to make the text the most effective it could be and make it come out clear. I
believe that being able to work to a professional brief has helped with what it will be like in future when working to
a brief. Also doing this has allowed me to get use to what it is like when working with a brief and also helped find
out what it is like to try and change the opinion of the client as if you think something is better than what they are
asking for may still not be what they want so being persuasive can be very important. I also think that my production
skills have gotten better from this project and also from the start of the year to this last project. Using more abilities
that Photoshop has to offer compared to when I started using it and stuck to the basics. I have also had great
feedback from my client and people who works with my client. If I was working commercially I would create a
meeting between myself and my client to give them my work and receive feedback and then every time I complete a
piece of work I would then get back in touch and have another meeting to make sure everything is okay. Also I
would make sure that the client is willing to pay me for my work before I start working on the project the reason I
would do this is due to the fact that they stopped messaging me after they got what they wanted in the poster.
11. Constraints
I had no problem with financial problems as the resources I needed at college or my
client was able to provide me with. The only thing I would have to pay for would be to
get myself to and from college which was not a problem. I did not have any problems
with copyright as the images I used where either my own that I took or I made sure
that they were able to be used of the internet. I made sure that the images of google
were free to use before adding them to the poster, if I didn't do this than when they
would put out the poster and someone realizes that a image that is used is there they
would be able to claim for copyright. The font I used was already on the computer
and came with Photoshop and therefore means that they had already purchased this
font. When I made the poster as I am advertising the product I had to make sure I
stayed in the guidelines from advertising standards authority. The way I made it stay
in the guidelines was to avoid anything that people would get offended by. Also all the
text that was written is true and the text does not cause any harm or offence to
anyone.
12. Development
The first thing I did was get in touch with my client so that I could have a day out with the people how work with the dot peen
machine. Then I spent that day taking images and finding out how it works and seeing the machine in action. Then I went
through the images and decided which ones I would use and which ones I didn't believe where any good. Ones I chose the
images I came into college to start working on the posters. The first thing I worked on was getting the colour scheme down. I
used a couple of different colour scheme but the one I liked the best was the one that followed the colours of the crest.
Eventually I changed this but at first this was the colour scheme I went with. I then got the sponsors logo and put them into a
border and have them separated from the rest of the content I followed the original poster and decided to put them at the
bottom as this made the most sense. Then I worked on the title and the crest. I had to resize the crest from the original as it was
squished the first time I did it so I had to make it bigger which lead to the change in colours. With me making it bigger I got rid of
the red as this was the problem with the crest being the size it was, this was because the red acted like a border so putting half of
the crest in the border and half out would not look good so getting rid of the red allowed me to make it bigger without the worry
of the border. I also tried out a couple of different fonts but eventually went with the font that the police use on all of there other
products. The I added the sub titles and divided the page up into a couple of sections. Once I had the sub titles I added the text
that I wanted with the photos I took. I made sure that all the text was the same size and there was the same difference between
the words but some of the words were touching so under the first word on the first line there was a word a the first letter was
touching that word so once I was told about this I made the gaps between the lines bigger so this was no longer a problem. Once
I had the text sorted I made sure the images were the same size before moving onto the next section. Then I grab some images
of the internet to show some of the products that could be marked and they were
13. things that young people associate with like a iPad and mobile phone. I then
added a image of a laptop and showed what It looked like on a product on. So
the poster would go in order from how it works, what can be marked and then
how it would look. Finally I added a question at the top to get some
involvement from people looking at the poster and getting them involved. I
added an image of the product as I realized I didn't really have an image of the
product on the poster except from the one that went with the how it works
part, so I added one in the corner. I did have one on the other side but when
my client looked at it they realized the text was backwards so I got rid of it and
just kept one. With the twitter poster I went with the same style and chose the
same colour scheme and went with the same layout. The original twitter poster
that I made had some information that people would be able to interact with
but I realized that with out Photoshop you could not type on the twitter poster
so I changed this and added the bit from the poster that I removed for this
idea.
