2. Constraints (Legal, regulatory and financial
perspective.)
• When carrying out the production time of the production weeks of this project and creating the business cards, logo and
mock posts for social media I found that elements of copyright could cause some problems as I created a range of different
business cards that my client could choose from and one of the designs I created I wanted to use a marble background but
I didn't want to just use a marble texture from google images as this would cause copyright issues so I took a photo of a
laptop case with a marble texture on it and then chose to highly edit it to up the contrast and brightness to make a more
striking background to the design. Other than this I don’t feel like I faced any copyright issues because I chose create all
the elements of my designs by hand either by warping shapes, or using other techniques to help me to produce the
graphics that I wanted specifically. Even with the small elements of my designs like with the small pair of scissors in the
logo I chose to make them using shapes that I had warped and coloured to help avoid any copyright issues but also so that
I could get them exactly how I wanted them to appear. Another thing that I need to be careful with was selecting was the
fonts as I found my fonts on DaFont.com and when finding the perfect fonts I was sure to only use fonts that either said
’100% free’ or ‘Public Domain’. Not only this but when I was creating the logos I did adapt the fonts slightly anyway so that
it would fit with my design ideas better for example with the second logo I made the font was much more curly and
feminine however I wanted to hang a pair of scissors on the ‘K’ if New Look but the font didn't make this possible so I
simply drew on a loner K which would suit my idea to have the scissors hanging off the K to help tie in the hairdressing
idea to the name of the company.
• When it comes down to the regulatory side of advertising I had to ensure that the work I created would go against any of
the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) guidelines. However due to the type of project I was doing and the client I was
working for and the type of work I would be producing which was more informational to the company I feel like there
wasn’t many if any guidelines which I could've broken with this project.
• I didn't face any financial constraints with the work I was creating as this was all left up to my client and the majority of the
work I was producing would be used on social media other than the business cards which would need to be printed but
other that the things I needed for this project like Photoshop was something I already had available to me.
3. Managing the project.
• I feel that I managed the project quite well based on the things I needed to produce and the
time I and to produce them, as I knew I wanted to create more than one option for my client as
I felt that was the best why to create something that they were looking for as they were left
with multiple options to which she felt was more suitable as by the end of the 2 weeks I had 4
main business card options along with the corresponding social media designs, 2 logos and
mock Instagram and Facebook posts which she could caption and post in the future.
• As well as this I think the way I approached the project worked quite well in order for me to
produce the different options for the client. As well as this I feel like although I didn't stick to
my production schedule because I was ahead of it a lot of the time the project still went well
because everything was finished on time and had the chance to give my client different options
for the designs I created.
• The way I managed the project was to do each element of my brief in sections so that I wasn’t
doing a bit of everything all at the same time or starting something and not finishing it, I made
sure that I had completed one bit of the brief before I moved onto something else. For example
I made sure I had completed the logo before I started on anything for the business cards or
social media posts to ensure that everything was completed in time.
4. Time management.
• Although before the project started I had produced a well thought out production
schedule I just found that I had various different ideas and much more inspiration to try
different things once I had actually started the design work so I drifted from my original
production schedule. However I still achieved the same amount of work if not more as I
produced extra for the client but also I did still to the idea of wanted to have my project
finished by the 17th so that I had the last day of production to go back and change
anything that I wasn’t happy with and also gave me time to save all my final pieces as
jpegs and higher quality files so that I could get them prepared to send to the client for
her to use and get the business cards printed for her company therefore I found having
this day to get everything sorted and improve anything very beneficial as it meant that I
had everything completed on time.
• As well as this I feel like my time management was good as I did complete everything
that was asked of me in the brief and did have everything completed on time.
• When it comes to time management I felt that it was important for me to create more
than one business card and corresponding social media banners and profile pictures so
that my client had a range to choose from so I ensured that had enough time over the 2
weeks to create as many of these as I thought was appropriate or covered all bases.
5. Communication with the client.• My communication with the client has been fairly limited but also more helpful and good positive face to face
conversations, the first conversation was when discussing the brief and what was asked of me and then another
conversation after the first week of production to show her the work I had already created and wanted to find
out her opinion on the work I had already produced and find out if I was on the right tracks with the things I was
producing and that they were the type of things that she was looking for. The final interaction with my client was
showing her the final products and sending her the final copies of the work I had created from looking into the
brief.
• As the brief that my client gave me was fairly open and gave me a lot of freedom with what I wanted to produce
and what I felt would work well and the only limitation that I had to work with was the information that she
wanted to be on the business cards and other than I just to create something that represented hairdressing in the
logo and business card.
• Also I feel like although the contact I had with my client was limited I still got the feedback I needed and through
the communication with my client being face to face it was out easier to discuss ideas and explain what each
other meant rather than just guessing through emails. As well as this it made it easier to understand what she
was looking for what styles she liked for the design work rather than me just doing what I liked it was easier to
ensure we understood each others ideas and what would and wouldn't work.
• As all of my contact with the client was face to face the only written contact is the brief and what was asked of
me other than that I only have the dates that I visited the client to discuss what I was going to create.
• This first contact with the client was getting the brief filled in on the 1st May
• The second contact I had with the client was on the 12th May when I showed her the work I had already created
• The last contact was giving her the final designs and all the other work I had produced.
• As my communication with the client was limited I struggled to get some feedback as she had gone on holiday
when I needed feedback so I asked someone who would be a potential customer of my client and she said ‘I
think the most professional looking one is the yellow and grey layout because it gives a clear and visible
design on what the company is promoting. Emily has also created two other design which are completely
different from each other which shows she is capable of showing she is flexible at creating new looks but
shows a high level of creativity.’
6. Did you meet the requirements of the brief?
• The brief that I was given with fairly open and didn't have many restrictions and limitations as I
was given a lot of creative freedom when it came down to the design work. The only limitation I
had was that there was specific bits of information that she wanted to be on the business cards
for example the Facebook and yell.com information needed to be on them as well as the contact
information such as phone numbers so that possible customers can get in touch with my client
easily.
• Although I did complete all of the requirements in the brief as I produced the logo, business
cards, Facebook cover photos and mock social media posts which consist of images that my client
had previously taken of various styles and cuts she had done before so I just pieced them
together in a more interesting way to show the final results of her work. As well as this the
business cards I produced fit the brief as they all clearly relate to hairdressing, as does the logo
but they also feature all the necessary information that my client requested to have on the
business cards in order for her to possibly gain new customers and promote her business.
• Due to my brief being fairly open and just giving me minor restrictions I feel that there was plenty
of times where I could have gone of track and made something that my client wasn’t looking for
therefore I feel that the task possibly could've been easier if I had had a colour scheme or certain
style to stick too and this is why I created so many different options for my client.
7. What have you learnt?
• From doing this client project I have learnt many things from how to work well and communicate well with a client
and understanding that it is based on what is best for them and their company. As well as this I have learnt how to
work with the restrictions of a brief and how to adapt my ideas to fit the clients wants and needs which before I
had never had to consider and it was all down to me and I could make all the big choices in the design work but in
this I had to take on the opinion and feedback of the client who had the final say. I have also learnt that the best
way of communication with the clients when possible is through face to face conversations as its much easier to
describe and show your ideas and what you're planning to do, as well as his you get instant feedback as you aren't
wasting time possibly making something that the client didn't like you instantly know whether or not you are on
the right track with your ideas and work. However in some cases it may have been more helpful to have the
feedback in writing so that I can reflect on it and interpret it to help adapt the things I had created. As well as this I
learnt how important it is to work with copyright laws and ASA guidelines when creating something for a client.
Also from this project I have learnt that trial and error is key when producing something that has to fit a specific
brief as some things wont work the way you wanted them too but as long as you communicate this with the client
then there should be no issues about what you plan to do and will also save a lot of confusion if you say it will look
one way but then you test it out and it isn't as good as you wanted it to be it wont be a shock to the client when
you show them the final piece and its very different to what you pitched to them.
• Another thing I have l learnt from doing this client project is that I have developed Photoshop skills as I have never
designed a business card so from doing this project I've learnt what works well and what doesn't for example I
found that I preferred the look of a landscape business card rather than a portrait business card as it looks much
better and flows well with the overall look of business cards and the professional look they should have.
