2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
When making a magazine, it is very important that you consider all the convention and form of all
music magazines. On the image here, I have labeled all the different conventions that are found
on a normal music magazine. The masthead can normally be found at the top left of the magazine
and is in a large and bold font. It is unique to that magazine because it’s the name of the magazine
and also the font should be something that distinguishes that magazine from others. The cover image
is also very important and for the magazine as it gives it a
selling point. The artist will also be the main artist that is
featured in this issue of the magazine. Its important that the
artist featured has eye contact to the reader so they must
Look straight into the camera so that the reader feels involved
With the magazine from the start. The image is always
portrait and links to the genre of the magazine is some way
or another. The cover line is where the other artists that are
featured in the magazine will go. Its normally located on the
sides of the article and is ascending on the side that it on. It
normally comes in a variety of colours and fonts. The colour
scheme is also important as, like the masthead, distinguishes
the magazine from others on the market. It also must relate
and appeal to your target audience. The headline also must
include the name of the featured artist. It comes in a large
font and and is in a different colour and font to the rest of the
page. The sun-heading are normally located on one side of the
Cover as well. They are short but interesting at the same time.
The selling line is more about the style and ethos of the
Magazine. It also includes a pull quote to entice the reader in.

-Convention Not followed
I think my magazine follows the conventions very well. As you
can see above, there is only one that I haven't followed exactly
and that’s with the cover line. I don’t think having a variety of
colours and font sizes does the magazine justice and I think that
it looks better like this when they are neat and easy to read.
4. Masthead: This is the
masthead of my magazine. As
you can clearly see, it follows
the conventions of a typical
music magazine very well. It
has the large font in the top left
of the page. It also has a very
different styled font to other
music magazines that are
found.
Selling Line: The selling line
gives the reader a short
message abut what the theme
of the magazine is. This shows
what the magazine name
‘MGM’ stands for. I think that
the selling line doesn't’t follow
conventions as they are
normally a pull quote that
makes people want to buy the
magazine however this is just
telling them what the
abbreviation means.
Headline: This is the headline to my
magazine. The article contains the
bands name ‘4ORTY2’ which
presents the band that feature on
the cover. Its also in a large font and
a different colour to the rest of the
text on the page. It stands out
because of the font used and ‘the
return’ makes it seem like it’s a big
deal.
5. Cover Image: This is the cover image. It fills
most of the front page and is a portrait shot.
Both of the two are facing the camera, keeping
eye contact to the reader which involves them
with the magazine from the start. It includes the
featured band for this issue of the magazine. As
the magazine is mixed genre, the look isn't
important however the look of the photo ties in
with the rest of the front cover.
Cover Line: This is the
cover line. It features other
artists that feature in the
magazine. It also has them
a a descending order on
the side of the page. It
does not however come in
a variety of font sizes and
colours. I felt that it would
ruin the style of the
magazine and I felt that the
way I have don’t it is better.
Sub-heading: This is one
of the sub-headings. It
gives a small amount of
information about the story that’s is featured on the
cover line. It is quite short and interesting meaning it
follows the conventions well.
6. Another important part to a magazine is the contents page. The contents page is like the hub if the
magazine, allowing the customer to find the page they are looking for to find a specific article. As you
can see by this contents page, there are many different conventions that are contained in the
contents page. The band index, although included on this contents page, is not always inside an
article. This is not an essential part to the magazine as it just shows the reader what different artists
are inside the magazine and where to find them at certain points. It does not have a specific place in
which it is found. The name of the magazine is also
found on this page. Normally the masthead will be
shown and would be located somewhere near the
top of the page. There is also an article picture
located somewhere on the page. The date of
publish is another part that is included on contents
pages. Categories are also shown on one side of the
magazine, with page numbers to various articles in
that category. There is also sometimes a cover
article tag to show the reader which articles were
mentioned on the front cover. Subscription info
like the index is not something every magazine
uses although its helpful to the reader in helping
them to subscribe to the magazine. The most
important convention however would be columns.
every magazine has columns in some way on their
contents page. On this one, there are 3 however
the amount varies depending on what the
magazine want.

Columns
I think that my magazine contents page follows conventions very
well. As you can see, there an no conventions that I didn’t follow
even the ones that aren't mandatory.
Date Of Publish
8. Name Of Magazine: This is the name of the magazine
on the top of the contents page. The name is in the
same font style and the same colours that are shown on
the front cover of the magazine.
Article Picture: This is one of the article
pictures used on the contents page. It links to
the article as one of the artists that are shown
in the photo is the one saying the quote that is
mentioned to present the article to the reader.
Adding the images also makes the page look
fuller and gives something extra to the reader
rather then just writing which is good for the
younger audience.
Band/Artist Index: This is the index part of the contents. It
has everything a magazine index should have which is all
the artists and bands that are included in the magazine. As
this part of the contents page isn't necessary, there isn't
anything about it to go against the conventions.
9. Categories: The red headings on this contents are the categories
contained in the magazine. They are very big and bold and stand
out well from the rest of the page and the other articles on the list
below. They are at the side of the page and also contain the page
numbers for everything inside. This means that this also follows
conventions well.
Cover Article Tag: This is the
cover article tag. It clearly
shows which is the article that is on the front cover of the
magazine. That’s all that is really needed from the tag. As you can
see, it follows the colour scheme and also gives an easy way f
finding which article is on the front cover and where it is.
Subscription Information: This was
another part if the article which
wasn't actually needed however I
believe it looks better with it. It has
the information and a web address
as well as contact details. It also
makes the page look better and
makes it have a better lay out.
10. Columns: The columns
were a must to the
contents page. This is
because they are the
main layout to the page
and also bring the page
together and makes it
look professional. There
are also many different magazine that also contain columns. I think there should be at
least 2 and there are 3 here so I think my magazine follows the conventions well in
this case.
Date Of Publish: This shows what the
date was when the magazine was
published. It also contains the page
number and the name of the magazine.
I think this is essential to the magazine
as you need to have the page number to
tell where the pages are. Also, you need
to have the date of publish so the
reader knows when the magazine was
released. The name is also not needed
however it links that magazine together
well. This part also follows convention
well.
11. Article Page
The article page is where you will find a story, Q&A or another type of article about a band or artist.
The article has a lot of different conventions so its understandable if some aren't always followed.
The page must have an article which is fairly obvious. A drop cap at the start of the article shows
where the start is and gives the article a much more visual look. The image should fill a whole page
if not go across the two pages like this one does. The artist or band featured however should be the
main point if the image. The image caption allows the reader a incite into what is happening in the
picture. The headline is also needed as it sets up the article. This will normally have a quite of a pun
or something that links to the article. The lead in gives the reader a short overview of the article and
starts us off for what is to come. The page number is also something that is needed as it shows us
what page the article is on we can find
it in the contents. The magazine date
And logo aren't as important but they
Link the rest of the magazine together.
12. Article Image:
• Centre of page filling at least one
page of the article
• Link to the article in some way
Headline:
• Link to the article
• Short but easy to remember
Image Caption:
• Give a brief description of what
the picture is
• Tell where the picture is taken
Drop Cap:
• Starts the article off
• Shows where the article starts

a start to the article
• Include the name of artist/band

How does the article use
conventions?
13. Article Image: This is the image for the article. He is
standing and facing the reader, involving them with the
article already. It fills the two pages including the setting
to the photo behind him. Also, the image of just Ben
(the kid in the photo) fills one page and is the obvious
subject of the article. It also links to the article meaning
it follows conventions well.
Headline: This is
the headline to
the article. Its
short and is rolls of
the tongue. Its
obviously a change
to the original
‘Rags To Riches’
saying. It also links
the article as the
article is about
how he went from
‘riches to rags.’
14. Image Caption: This is the caption to the image. As you can see, it
gives a brief description on the picture. It also tells you were the
picture is taken so it follows all of the conventions in this aspect.
Lead In: This is the lead in to the
article. As you can see, it already starts
of the article. It also doesn't’t reveal to
much of the article but gives a small
starter to say what its about. It also
includes the name of the artist and
also refers to it when it mentions the
‘rapper’
Drop Cap: The drop cap
here starts of the article as
you can see. It also clearly
shows where the article
starts.
15. Developing Ideas For Front Cover
I took a lot of my ideas for my magazine from
this front cover of NME. I found that the layout
was very good visually and also had a lot of
elements that made it stand out from other
music magazine front overs I looked at.
16. NME Magazine My Magazine
As you can see in this photo, the
masthead uses three letters as an
abbreviation of the real name of the
magazine. It also has the real name
of the magazine underneath that
part.
This is my magazine front cover.
As you can see, it also has three
letters used for the masthead like
the NME magazine. It also
includes the real name of the
magazine underneath that also
like the NME magazine. I thought
this was a good idea as the real
name would take up a lot of
room on the top of the front
cover. Condensing it down meant
I could have the font quite big.
17. NME Magazine
My Magazine
Here is one of the cover lines on the NME magazine
cover. It stretches right across the top of the cover
from one end to the other. You can also see that it
changes colour at the end to separate the two parts the font stays the same
however.
Here is one of the cover lines n my front cover of my
magazine. As you can see, it is very similar to the
cover line that is featured on the top of the NME
magazine. It keeps the same font the whole way through as well as stretching
across the whole of the top of the cover. The stand out part however is that it
also changes colour like the NME one. This one however changes to blue as
the background here is already red.
18. NME Magazine My Magazine
The headline was also developed
onto my design here. You can see
that the name of the band is on top
of the actual headline. The headline
is also in a very stand out font to the
rest of the page.
Here is my music magazine. You
can see that I have swapped the
name of the artist to be the
headline along with ‘the return’.
This one is also in a very
different font to that of the rest
of the page.
19. NME Magazine My Magazine
The NME magazine uses a unique
blend of blue, red and white for
the front cover.
For my magazine, I decided to
copy these colours as well as
using these colours throughout
the rest of the magazine.
20. Developing Ideas For Contents Page
For my contents page, I used 2 different magazines to develop
my ideas for a contents page. U used different features in each
for my one and I think that it looked good.
21. My MagazineNME Magazine
These are the
categories as well
as the other
articles that are in
the magazine. As
they have a specific
pattern and also
come in small
boxes that separate
each section of the
magazine.
Here is the
categories and
the other articles
in my magazine.
As you can see,
mine also uses
small boxes to
separate each
section. They
look similar
however I didn’t
develop any of
the other
features about
this part of the
magazine.
22. Other Magazine My Magazine
Here is the other magazine contents
page. It used pictures and had them
in different boxes. It also had the
information about the article inside
the pictures boxes. I also liked how
the picture here was taken in front
of a wall as it made it look
provocative.
Here is my magazine contents, I
also used the idea of putting
pictures into separate boxes and
putting the article information
into the box. I also took this
particular picture in front of a
brick wall so that it to looked
provocative.
23. Developing Ideas For Article Page
Here is the magazine article which I thought would be the
best to develop for my magazine. Its from Q magazine.
24. Q Magazine
My Magazine
Here is the headline to the article on the Q
magazine article. As you can see, it is located
near the bottom of the left side of the two
pages. It also has the artist standing with his
hands in his pockets. The text is also located
in the white boxes on the right side of the
two pages.
Here is my magazine. As you can see, it
also has the headline on the bottom of
the left side of the magazine article. The
pictures are also similar with the stance
as well as the fact that the picture
spreads across both pages. Also, I have
developed the white box with text idea
to making the white boxes faded.
