Conventions of my media product
1.
2. £1.50
I created House Style by using continuity throughout my media product. The house style included the same fonts used throughout, a colour
scheme, the same main image model images and page numbers, ect, which all matched up.
The font of my masthead has only been used once although the font used for the plug is used again on the contents page and double page
spread. This connotes continuity and creates house style.
The model I used to create a new singer was Talitha, who I represented as a popular singer that is in the charts right now. I used her on my front
cover, contents page and double page spread. This is because, conventionally, the main image on the front cover is used through to the contents
page then is on the double page spread which is about that artist.
The colour scheme I used through all three of my media products was white, red and yellow. The reason why I picked this colour scheme
because it is bright and bold, and also because they are mutual colours that appeal to both genders. This is also how I created house style which
shows continuity throughout my product.
It was important to plan the page numbers before hand to make sure they all matched up, especially the double page spread. This shows that I
took into consideration how important it was to match the numbers up correctly.
I followed conventions to ensure that my media products looked effective and professional.
4. Masthead: The masthead, conventionally, goes in the top left corner and clearly states the logo of the magazine. This is the reason why I
positioned my masthead in the spot, I wanted to follow the conventions of magazines because it looks professional and is used in magazines
such as ‘Q’ magazine, which is very successful. At first, my masthead was stretched across the top of the cover, but after I had feedback from my
teacher I decided that it looked better positioned in the top left corner. The font that I chose for my masthead it simply yet bold, which is clear to
read and represents the strong, bold music included in the magazine. On magazines, conventionally, the masthead is quite bold and eye-catching
and is the largest font on the cover, and I have followed that convention. I chose black as the colour of my masthead because it follows my
colour scheme, I was going to choose a dark red as the colour but after some feedback from peers and my teacher I decided that the red
clashed to much with the main image.
Main Image: In music magazines there is usually a well known artist or band, that is well know within that particular genre, featuring in the main
article of the issue. I have followed convention by using my model, Talitha, as the main image and I also continue to use other images of her
through to the contents page and double page spread. I chose Talitha to be my main feature story artist because I wanted to represent an artist
in the Pop industry that is current, and she was what I was looking for. Conventionally, the model in the main image is giving direct address and I
have followed this. This is because the model looks like it is looking at you therefore connecting with the audience. The size of the image of
Talitha is quite large, because this is conventional. On magazines that I have research, their main images take up most of the cover because this
is what attracts the audience. The reason for this is because if a person see’s one of their favourite artists/bands on the front cover they will
want to buy that magazine and read it, and that is why I have followed that convention as I want that same effect.
Plug: The plug is something on the front cover that’s purpose is to appeal and attract to the reader. I followed this convention by adding a plug
which is about the best acts of 2013. This will appeal to my audience because they will want to know if their favourite artists are included . This is
conventionally small and in the top right corner which will be one of the first things the reader will see.
Main Feature Story: The main feature story is conventionally the second largest text on the front cover, the 1st being the masthead. This is
because this is the most important story in the magazine therefore if the text is larger it has a higher importance. Usually underneath the main
anchorage text, in this case ‘Talitha’, there is a brief summary about the main article, originally I had one too. But after feedback from my
teacher, I decided that it looked more appealing without it. The main feature story is placed towards the bottom because it is quite large and it
classed with the other feature stories when it was placed higher up on the cover.
Feature Stories: The feature stories, conventionally , are placed along the sides of the front cover. The purpose of
feature stories is to allow the audience to have an insight into what is featured in the magazine. I have followed
conventions and placed the feature stories along the right side of the page. I have the two colours, white and black,
alternating through each feature story which continues with the colour scheme. The feature stories help make the
choice for the audience whether or not they want to buy the magazine because if the stories are not appealing then
there is no point of buying it.
Barcode:, Price and Date: These are conventionally found at the bottom corners of the cover. This is one of the
most important parts of the magazine because it tells you the price of the magazine and the barcode allows you to
buy it .
Skyline and Footer: The skyline and footer are very similar in purpose as they highlight any competitions, U.S.Ps or
any exclusive interviews and offers. My skyline includes the text ‘Win tickets for iTunes festival inside’, and my footer
states ‘Exclusive Interviews with...’. This is appealing because you have to look inside to find out about how to win
tickets and read the exclusive interviews.
6. Title: The title is what introduces the audience to the start of the issue. This title informs the reader that this is the guide to
where everything is in the magazine. I followed conventions by placing my title in the top left corner, which is one of the
first things that a reader will see when turning the page. Also to follow conventions, I made the title bold and clear, also
being the largest text on the page, making it easy for the audience to read and see. To make it more clear to read I placed a
black box behind the text then made the title white to contrast the two colours and also to continue the colour scheme.
Images relating to the feature stories: There is, conventionally, at least 4 images that relate to the feature stories. This is
positive for the reader because if they see a picture of an artist they like with a page number near it they will look in the list
of feature stories to find it. The largest image I used on the page was Talitha, who is on the front cover, because she is the
main story and is conventional to emphasise the main story more.
Sub Headings: The subheadings purpose is to separate the different sections of the magazine, e.g. ‘features. Conventionally,
the sub headings are bolder that the text underneath them to make them more noticeable and eye-catching for the
audience to see therefore they will then look at the text below. I made the boxes that outline the text red to continue with
my colour scheme and also to make the sub headings stand out. The text is white because it also continues with the colour
scheme as well as contrasting with the red.
Social media: I have included three types of social media ; Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. These logos are presented at
the top right side of the page next to the title which emphasizes them more. I have put links to what the reader has to type
into them specific social sites to subscribe to them. Social media is important because it helps the readers keep updated
with what is going on in the music industry and any changes to the magazine.
Features and Stories: The features and stories are, essentially, the most important convention on the contents page. The
purpose of these stories and features is they inform the readers where all the stories are in the magazine. This convention is
Usually set out in columns, and I followed that the convention because it makes the contents
page look more professional and it is easier for the audience to read.
Competition: Through the magazines that I have researched, I have noticed that it is
conventional to have a competition on the contents page. This helps lure the readers in into
looking for the details to win the tickets that are advertised.
Page Numbers: I have included page numbers which link in to the features and stories because
without page numbers, you are unable to know where each story is in the magazine. I have
included three larger numbers next the three image on the contents page. This is conventional
because these numbers emphasize where the main stories, the pictures, are within the
magazine.
Date/Issue Number: This is conventionally placed at the top of the page above the title. This just
informs the reader the date and the issue number.
8. Title: The title, conventionally, is a quote from the main article on the page. I have decided to follow this convention and
took a quote from the article because I wanted that professional feel to it. The title introduces the audience to the article
therefore it needs to be bold and large, I have followed this convention. I chose this font because it also appears on my
front cover and contents page which shows continuity and house style. It is placed at the top right corner because this is
conventional and I wanted to follow this because I know that this technique has worked in the past.
Stand first: The stand first is conventionally directly under the title and I have followed this convention by doing the same
thing. The text is usually smaller than the title but larger than the article text which shows that the reader should read the
stand first before the article. The purpose of the stand first is to inform the reader on what is to come in the article.
Drop Cap: The purpose of the drop cap is to tell the reader where the article starts. This is simply a letter that is larger than
the text, which I decided to put a box behind to make it stand out more.
Main Image: The main image, conventionally, is quite large that normally takes up half a page on the double page spread..
This is because it emphasises the artist that the article is on. I followed this convention by removing the background from
the artist, Talitha, to enable me to place her in front of the title, and still being able to see the text behind her. By doing this
it connects her image to the article.
Page Numbers: The page numbers, once again, are important because they help the reader find that specific page from the
contents page. They are placed at the bottom of the page because this is conventional and because as people turn the
page, usually, they turn it from the bottom corners therefore they will see the numbers first. I chose the colour of the
numbers to be red because it continues with the colour scheme.
Pull Quote: A pull quote is a small section from the article which is presented away from the article, usually near the main
image or in between the text. I decided to put my pull quote in the
middle of the article to draw attention it because if the audience read
the quote, they may want to read why the artist said that.
