1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TASKS?
2. INTRODUCTION
For my short film project I decided to create a product within the Action and
Adventure genre. My film in many ways is quite mainstream and contains a
typical fight and stand off scene. But in many ways it is quite unique as it is done
with clay models and uses the stop motion technique. There is also a switch
between the computer game and the real world.
The criteria for my film was:
• It had to be 5 minutes long
• There had to be a clear protagonist
• Must have a clear genre
3. THE TASK
Storyline
The opening scene contains a male teenager playing a computer game. When the male
has left the characters emerge from the screen and battle for the shift key which the
antagonist has stolen .
Ancillary Tasks
My two ancillary tasks consisted of a film poster and a film review in the style of a
magazine review already out in the media.
4. FILM POSTER RESEARCH
Firstly, to create my poster I had to research some popular
action and adventure posters. A very influencing poster was
‘The Dark Knight’ this poster was very dark with only a few
other lighter colours. From this we decided to make our
antagonist and protagonist appear in colour on the poster
with a black background. This could also hint to the
audience that the film has an Action and Adventure genre.
Another key part of my research on film posters was writing
a list of the individual conventions the poster has. I then had
a good idea where I was going to put my titles and names of
actors in the poster.
5. CREATING THE REVIEW
As far the film review, this is something I
was familiar with as I am doing A-level
English. Also the most research I had done
on a magazine was Empire as this was a
magazine I had studied frequently in
English. I also knew that this would be
tough to pull off as writing in the style of
Empire is difficult. In light of this I decided
to write up multiple drafts of my review to
ensure that it was good enough and not
rushed. I also looked on the web to find the
layout of an empire magazine. Eventually I
was able to find a layout that in my
opinion would suit my review, this was a
review on the film, A-team.
6. CREATING THE POSTER
To create my film poster I first took 2 of the
pictures that were taken during the project of the
protagonist and antagonist and removed the
background. I was now left with only the
characters with a transparent background. I could
now insert these characters onto a A4 portrait
document with a black background. I was then
able to insert the title and actors names in the
poster as well as a tag line. I created this in a red
font to represent the violence in the film.
7. WHICH PRODUCT WAS THE STRONGEST
In my opinion the strongest out of the three products I created was my short film. I feel
this is the strongest as this was the main task and the poster and review seemed like
add-on elements to the film.
I also feel that I could express the representations of the characters through moving
image a lot more that a single image and words on paper.
8. LINKS BETWEEN MY PRODUCTS
The link shown between the review and the film in my opinion is definitely the image or
screenshot on the review. This adds life to the review and also explains the characters
names to the audience who my be unfamiliar with the film.
The poster, review and film all follow the save theme so they compliment each other in
the understanding of representations presented throughout. Another link between all
three products is that I managed to stick to my specified genre and theme in all of the
products.
9. FUNCTIONS OF EACH PRODUCT
• My main task conveys the journey between two characters , the protagonist and the
antagonist. The main function of my short film is to be viewed and attract my target
audience.
• The film posters’ main function is to be eye catching to the audience, therefore
drawing them in and wanting them to take a look at the film.
• The reviews main function is to give a detailed analysis and opinion on the film.
Unlike the poster which persuades the audience, the film review gives a non biased
opinion on the film, therefore hinting to the audience how good/bad the film really is.
10. WHAT OTHER TECHNIQUES WERE USED TO
ENSURE YOUR TASK FIT INTO YOUR GENRE
To ensure my project acquired the action and adventure genre, the elements I was able to look at
when creating my film and ancillary tasks were:
Camera
A range of camera angles used to make the film look more realistic. A range of longshots, midshots
and close-ups.
Lighting
The lighting for this project was important as we would not get all of the filming done in one day.
This meant we always had to film at night and we also had to use artificial light which was secured
in the same place throughout the duration of my project.
Mise-en-scene
A common environment based around a computer desk with props such as keyboard, mouse and
speakers.
Sound
The sound was a large factor as there is no voice over. Sound effects and music played a large part
in the realism of my film.
11. CONCLUSION
• In my opinion the word ‘promotional package’ really sums up all of my products on a
whole as they are all needed in the real film industry. In light of this, in my opinion all
of my products compliments each other well.
• I managed to ensure all of my three products were consistent and conveyed the
same theme throughout, therefore reflection on each other
• The two ancillary tasks create the overall professional look of the short film. The
poster draws the audience in before the audience have viewed the film, and the
review gives a professional opinion from a top magazine assisting the audience in
whether to choose to watch the film or not.
