- The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a short film with ancillary tasks of a film poster and review. It describes the process of creating the poster and review to promote the drama genre film without revealing too much of the plot. Photoshop was used to design the poster and review professionally. Both ancillary tasks provided just enough information through visuals and text to intrigue the target audience about the narrative while generating interest in the film.

Evaluation activity 2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TASKS?
Evaluation Task
2
Tanika Singh
2. THE ASSIGNMENT
- The primary objective of the assignment was to create a short film
that had to approximate duration of 5 minutes. We were able to
choose a genre of our choice, and so we chose the drama genre.
- As well as creating the short film, we had to create a film poster
and a film review as part of our ancillary task. The purpose of this
was to attract our target audience.
3. THE OBJECTIVE OF
PRODUCING AN ANCILLARY
TASK
-The main objective of our ancillary task was to promote our film to
our target audience. This was done in ways that were visual, as well
as textual.
-Whilst the main objective of our ancillary task was to promote the
film, it was also a way in which our target audience could understand
what the film was about. This was provided through both of the
ancillary tasks. The film poster gave a visual insight to what the film
was about, whilst the film review gave a detailed explanation.
-To create both of my ancillary tasks were created on the software
‘Photoshop’. I create several drafts before creating my final film
poster and film review, to ensure that they would be both appealing
and informative to my target audience.
4. WHY DID I USE THE
SOFTWARE PHOTOSHOP?
- I completed both of my ancillary tasks on the software Photoshop.
The first reason as to why I used Photoshop, was due to the fact that
it was the software that I had the easiest access to. I wanted to ensure
that both my film poster and film review looked appealing to my
target audience, whilst still looking professional. Due to the fact that
Photoshop was commonly used for big film posters, I decided that it
was the best software to use to ensure that I produced the most
professional looking film poster and film review review. Using
Photoshop allowed me to produce a film poster and review of high
quality, as well as providing me with an appropriate layout for my
film poster and review. Using the software Photoshop allowed me to
create certain effects on my film poster and film review that I
wouldn’t have been able to do on other software's.
6. THE FILM POSTER
- I created a film poster as a visual element to attract my target
audience. Due tot eh fact that the poster was most likely going to be
the piece of ancillary that appealed more tot the target audience, I
had to ensure that it was attractive. The genre of our short film is
drama – hence, meaning that the poster had to have images that
represented the genre.
- When I was looking for inspiration for my film poster,
I looked for films that were of the same genre – that
being the drama genre. I attempted to find posters of
the drama genre, about domestic abuse, however these
were difficult to find as there weren’t many. One film
poster that I took inspiration from was the film
‘Provoked’. I took inspiration from this poster, due to
the fact that it represented the drama genre well.
7. THE FILM POSTER
The image of the character
Jesse is placed in the
background suggests that he
is not the main protagonist
in the film. His facial
expression is blank –
creating an enigma to what
role he plays., which is a
convention of the drama
genre.
The image of the character Amirah
is takes up the majority of the
poster –suggesting that she is the
main character. She has bruising
on her face, which tells the
audience she has been abused.
This then implies that she is the
protagonist, whilst Jesse is the
antagonist.
The image of the train
creates an enigma, as the
target audience will try
and piece together the
other elements of the
poster to figure out what
it means.
The title ‘Bad Faith’ has a play
on words as ‘faith’ is a
positive word, whilst ‘bad’ is
a negative word. The title
suggests that something that
was once good, has gone
bad. This cerates an enigma,
which is typical of a drama
8. COLOUR SCHEME ON THE
POSTER
- The main colour that was used on the poster was black. This was to
foreshadow the future events of the fil, as what happens towards the
end is disturbing. The rest of the colours on the poster are dark. For
example Amirah’s clothing is black, blending into the background.
The dark colours are used to connote misery and misfortune.
- The writing on the poster (title, tagline, release date, actors and
billing) was in the colour white, so that it stood out against the darker
colours.
9. FONT USED ON THE FILM
POSTER The font I used for the actors names was
‘Baskerville’. I chose to use this font as it stands
out, whilst still not being to in your face. The font
was simple. I chose this font as there was already a
lot going on in the poster, and so I wanted to keep
it simple. The font ensures that the names stand
out, without taking away the attention from the
rest of the poster.
The font I decided to use for the title was ’vtks
madalena’. I decided to use this font for a few
reasons. The first reason being the fact the
font is very bold and stand out. This was
important as it was one of the most important
elements on the poster. I chose this font as it
has an effect of ‘breaking apart’, which can be
symbolic to the character Amirah (protagonist).
The font stands out and catches the audiences
attention.
The font I used for the tagline was also
‘Baskerville’. I chose to use this font for similar
reasons as why I chose it for the actors names.
Whilst the tagline is important, it is not the main
attraction. The font is simple, however it still
stands out so that the audience are able to see
10. FONTS USED ON THE FILM
POSTER
For the billing of the film poster, I used
the standard billing block font that is
called ‘Credit Block’. I used this as this is
what is typically used on every film
poster.
11. THE FILM REVIEW
- The second ancillary task I completed was my film review. The film
review would be published in a magazine such as Empire. I decided to
create a film review as it’s a way to give our target audience more
detail on our film.
- Publishing it in a magazine such as Empire will ensure that
members of our target audience see it, as these magazines are
popular within our target audience. Creating a film review would
attract and inform my target audience.
- When creating my film review, I ensured to follow popular layouts,
so that it would appeal to my target audience.
12. THE FILM REVIEW
The main image is
of the protagonist
and antagonist, as
they are the main
characters in the
film
There is a star rating
to show the verdict
of the film –
intriguing our target
audience
The two images are of
the protagonist in
distress. These give the
target audience more of
an insight to the film.
The text in the film
gives a brief, whilst
still informative
review about the
general storyline
The verdict is in a
red box as it will
catch the readers
attention quickly.
The quote was placed in the centre of
the review in a large font so that it is
easy for the readers to see
The images also
give an insight to
the narrative of the
film
13. FONTS USED ON THE FILM
REVIEW The font I used for the name of the magazine was ‘’. I
used this font as it is simple and bold at the same
time. The name of the magazine is important,
however it isn’t the main focus – hence, why I chose
this font.
I used the same font as the name of the
magazine, for the title of the film. This
was because whilst it was important, I
didn’t want it to take away the main
focus. As it is more important than the
name of the magazine, I capitalised the
letters. For the tagline, I used the font ‘Baskerville’. I
used this font due to the fact that it makes the
tagline stand out, without being the main focus.
It is different to the font used for the magazine
name and the name of the film- helping it stand
out more.
14. FONTS USED ON THE FILM
REVIEW The font I used for the content of my film
review was ‘Baskerville’. I chose to use this
font as it is simple and easy to read. It is a font
that is typically used in magazine articles, so I
decided that it would be most appropriate to
use.
15. HOW DID THE ANCILLARY
TASKS REFLECT MY FINAL
PRODUCT?
- Both my film poster and film review reflected my final product accurately,
as they both gave enough information about the film – without giving too
much away. The information revealed gave the audience a brief insight to
the film – leaving the audience in anticipation and curiosity. My film poster
gives a limited amount of information on the narrative, due to the fact that it
is just a poster – so not much information can be included. However, the
poster included relevant information e.g. when the film was being released.
The film poster still gave the audience some insight to the films narrative.
One way was through the tagline ‘Not everything is as it seems’. This, along
with the imagery of the protagonist and antagonist, allowed to audience to
gather what the narrative would be. For example, the tagline suggests that
something bad happens between the protagonist and antagonist. The film
review contained a great amount of information, due to the fact that it was a
film review and was able to have a lot of text. Despite having a lot of
information, the film review still didn’t give away too much information. the
film review gave away small parts of the storyline, without revealing the main
events. This gave the audience a deeper insight to the film - informing them
about the storyline.
16. CONCLUSION
- To conclude, I’d argue that both of my ancillary tasks met the
purpose that I intended them to. Both of my ancillary tasks inform the
audience about the narrative of the film, without giving away too
much. The ancillary tasks were beneficial to the short film as they
intrigued the audience. I completed both tasks in a professional
standard, as well as in high quality. Both of my ancillary tasks are
extremely relevant to my ancillary tasks and do not include any
irrelevant information.
