The Uk Film Concil – Research and planning.
By looking at the data we can see that the majority of people that enjoy watching films in their free
time are women and middle aged people. This suggests to me that I will have to include more adult
themes within my film opening. However, I will also include themes that a younger audience can
connect with and therefore will hopefully not rule out any demographics by doing this.

Within this data we can see that Murder mystery films are extremel y niche as they’re not included
within the survey. However, this genre added with thriller/suspense, will broaden our target
audience as 53% typically enjoy watching these types of mainstream films when they have the time.
Within this data, it tells us the genre preferences that the general public typically enjoy watching.
From this we can see that the demographic audience I will need to target through my film opening
will need to be either male or female, above thirty five years of age with no kids and predominantly
middle to lower class. (However, in the information shown, the percentage of social classes that
prefer Thriller/suspense films are reasonably similar. Therefore, in my opening I will have to include
themes that a wide variety of social classes can comprehend and perhaps even relate to.)

This piece of data shows the different types of genres of films that the general public normally enjoy
watching. As we can see, the cinema attendance and dvd purchases of the Thriller/Suspense genre
maintain a reasonably high percentage throughout. This informs me that there may well be profit
within my film genre and that there will be a wide target audience for my opening.

The next slide shows what the general public view to be their favourite film genre. Again we can see
that Thriller/suspense is very high up the ladder with 26% of the population in Great Britain
considering it to be their favourite genre, again allowing me to acknowledge that there is a large
demographic that would be interested in watching my film.

This information shows the types of film the general public consider their favourites in more detail.
From this I can see that the demographic id be aiming to entertain would be women above the age
of 35 with no children. However, the male and female percentages are reasonably similar and
therefore I will attempt not to rule out either gender when creating my opening. The percentages of
the social classes are also extremely similar and therefore I do not have to concentrate on one
particular class.
To conclude, I believe that there is a wide target audience for my thriller/suspense genre. However,
a murder mystery genre clearly has a niche demographic as it is not included in a lot of the research.
This means in my film opening I will have to concentrate more on the themes that are involved in a
thriller movie and perhaps only add elements of murder mystery.
