1. Media.
Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I think most of all the thing that I have truly learnt is to not underestimate the task ahead to
be easier or more complicated then it actually is.
When I first started this course I had no real understanding of camera work or the inner
aspects of media, my understanding only spanned to the sociological aspects such as the
influence the media has on society and how powerful a product it really is; especially
involving social media.
When I think back to my preliminary task, I never truly understood the importance of
camera angles, the steady motion of the camera or positioning, non of that accrued to me
to be extremely important as long as I got the shot... These illusion of simplicity about
media and camera shots were thoroughly banished when it came to editing the outcomes
on Sony Vegas. The shot I had gathered where the shots I'd needed but because of
strange angling the media didn't flow as one piece like it should. This then made editing
quite hard for me as I had no previous experience working with an editing program except
windows movie maker, so when it came to Sony Vegas i was truly out of my depth.
However, to correct the flaws and help the piece to flow, I had to use transitions as cover
ups due to lack of precision. It was then that I acknowledged how important camera angles
and shots are which consequently made me overtly precise with my ideas, my camera
work, my blogging and especially editing.
The want to make my editing better in my preliminary task spurred me to make it almost
flawless for my final film opening. To ensure that I really got the best of the products I was
using and to properly get to grips with the editing program I was using, I did a lot of
background research on Sony Vegas. This spanned from read the Internet manual so that
I know my technology, watching YouTube videos to gain any experience and extra
knowledge on editing that I could potentially use in my opening scene, to going through the
on program guide to see if I'd missed anything previously.
Reading up on the program and discovering new things really did help to accomplish my
final product editing wise, in contrast to my preliminary task.
Knowing what I did about the program made the construction of my final task primarily a lot
easier to do then the preliminary task. Because I'd done background research on the
program I learnt a variety of different short cuts that made editing a lot quicker and slightly
simpler, the techniques that I learnt also gave me greater knowledge on how to look at the
footage in greater depth and detail so that is could be precise instead of having to estimate
like with my preliminary task.
Because of what I had learnt in my preliminary task I took special attention during class
when learning about camera shots and industrial techniques such as the 180degree rule,
close ups, mid shots, ariel shots etc.
In comparison to what I knew, and the way I thought when I was conducting the
preliminary task I have progressed so much. I have advanced unbelievable in my
knowledge for the subject in general, my selected genre and being able to work with the
program Sony Vegas effectively and efficiently; the difference is phenomenal!
I have learnt a variety of techniques that I haven't used in my opening scene but I definitely
intend to use them if I progress with the course for another year, as I feel they will be more
suited to my media we would be creating.
All in all, the knowledge I have now possess is invaluable and will help if I wish tousle
other media editing software such as Premier Pro. as it have realised it better to approach
something new with an open and ready mind to
