3. Research
• The strengths of my research is that there were a lot of similar film posters and trailers that I
was able to make a rough idea of what I wanted to do with trailer, and what my audience
liked and wanted to see in the horror product. The poster was easy to research because there
many posters with the horror theme that I wanted, helping to give me a sense of what I
needed to make horror poster seem more like a realistic poster instead of as a fake one. A
weakness of my poster and DVD cover was that there were the same other then small piece
of text, if I was dong it again would have more images on the DVD cover similar to the
existing product DVD covers which I used in my research section as the uninvited and Friday
the 13th both had multiple images on the DVD cover which shows more of the film. I would
improve on the era that I was research by having it from other era or from different director,
because it would give me a wider range of options to base it off, also it would help me
understand more of what older horror trailer were like and how I could potentially copy
some of those ideas. A strength of my film trailer, DVD cover and poster is that from the
research I gathered from the audience in the surveys and the interviews I was able to include
these in my product so I was able to use a dark colour scheme and a contrasting colour large
title, as these were all highlighted as being important to my audience. Therefore by putting
them in my product it helps my product to be identifiable as a horror. The research put into
the existing product had some details into to but not a lot for example, I didn’t put in what
the camera angle was for any of the posters or the covers for the DVD, this would enable my
product to of been better by having different camera angle for the poster, then another one
for the DVD covers. I didn’t go into a lot of detail when analysing the camera angles and the
lighting of the images, I could of carried further research into which worked best. I could also
improve my product by increasing the amount of people answer my survey. Therefore my
final product didn’t emulate all that what I wanted to do for the trailer, poster and covers, as
there are many things I would of done differently, if I had thought ahead so I could have had
more input from my surveys and interviews.
4. Planning
• My strengths of my planning was that I had many different ideas of what I wanted to do for my final products, so when
I putting it all down, I was able to get a good sense for each products. A weakness to my planning is that some of the
planning had more detail in than the other ones with the amount of branches of ideas & with how much depth I put
into it. I could of improve the detail of the all the ideas, with what I could do instead. In the initial plans I had an idea of
a photography magazine, but I don’t have enough time to go out and take picture for the magazine. The second one is
a game, but I’m not good at the animation or the drawing side of it so it would all look very clunky. I decide to go for a
film trailer/ poster and a DVD cover, because I believe that I could most marks on the this idea on the rest of them, also
I’ve done a poster before so I’m very confident that I could get a good mark on it, I’m familiar with using that type of
software for example the changing of the colours for the background, also the zooming in to a certain place. A
weakness was that I spent to much time planning which made me rush the final products during the making the
products. My initial minds maps had three ideas of film, game, photography. The film part of the mind maps had more
details of what I could for my final product, while other didn’t have a great deal of detail put into them which influence
me more to doing the film idea of the mind map. My pre production was in detail in certain parts for example the style
had more detail in than the layout plans for what I was thinking of doing, this effect my final product because I didn’t
stick to the layout plan for example the poster and covers being in black and white with a forest background. The
planning process had many weakness as I didn’t fully detail everything in the planning process, meaning some of the
ideas were vague and more detail could have been used. However by starting with the initial plans I was able to gather
starting ideas, which lead to more developed plans in the preproduction stage, as the initial mind map looked to
possibility I could do for a variety of product including a game and photography so the initial plans help me to narrow
down what I wanted to do and that I wanted to horror, so I could base my research off this. My final film trailer had a
plot to it that had been developed in the pre production stage, although some adjustments were made to the plan
during the filming. In the planning phases I didn’t fully look at a variety of location for the background of the poster and
DVD cover, as I mainly focussed on forest but this wasn’t possible to use in the actual production, something I should of
though of in the planning stage.
5. Time Management
• I manage my time well with a day to day plan with what I need on what day, for example
filming took place across two days then editing was a weeks work to get everything put in
place with the background music over the top of it. I did complete my project on time by
keeping to the days plan so I knew it should take a certain amount. I would improve the
effects of the trailer with moving from scene to scene, because it look very clunky from
movement from each scene. I would also improve the quality of the poster with the text
because it’s looks boring and very basic with what I use. I would improve how I would plan
out what I was doing on what days in more details because it wasn’t in much details to what I
was doing on each or how I was doing them, for example I could’ve put where I’m filming and
how long for, this is so that I know spend filming in a certain place and what I needed for that
day for example props, people. The experiments help me to design the poster and covers for
the film which help to design the final product more faster than making the trailer, because I
had a rough idea of what I wanted to do before making the final product. The planning help
me with get ideas for my final product a lot quicker because, I did research into films genres
that I enjoy watching while making notes in how they made that scene more effected with
the angles and the music. My schedule helped with my time management as I knew what
order I was doing things in however I didn’t take in to account that some of the thing would
take longer then a day meaning I ran slightly behind when it came to the editing as I found
that editing took longer then what I had expected, I also didn’t allow time for re-filming scene
due to them not working the first time and for the restriction with time to film as the outside
portion I had to wait till it was dark outside, so the sending off portion of the schedule was
delayed. However it definitely helped reduce time between doing different jobs to produce
the film as I knew exactly what I was meant to be doing next.
6. Technical Qualities
Differences: One
differences is that the
backcover for the
existing product has
more of a colours
scheme to it also the
they have writing on the
back to describe the
film. Also they use
different picture on the
back than the front
rather than the same
one that just zoom into
a certain place.
Similarities: One
similarities is that they
are both set in a dark
place with not much
lighting be hide the
main character so it’s
difficult to see the
person in the middle of
cover. Also the texts is
very similar with the
colours and the font,
also the sizes of the text
are very similar with
each other.
7. Technical QualitiesThe software that I used for my poster and DVD cover was photoshop.
This was done by inserting the images into the software, then add a
darker shade on the pictures. This made them more horror like
throughout the production of the poster and covers. Then I would add
the texts, barcode and rating to them, this made the product more
professional, by having a legal rating on, with a barcode so people
could buy it.
Photoshop constricted the production by not having a real good
horror font that I could use, they weren’t that horror like. I used
premieres pro to edit the clips for trailer, I did this by inserting the
clips into photoshop then cutting to get rid of any backing sound that
was in the clips, and to make the clips shorter. This was allowed by
having the cut tool to make the clips shorter than what they were. To
get rid of the backing sound I would unlink the sound with the clips
then, delete sound one by one. Then I put effects on the clips for
when it transition from one scene to the next, then I put text on one
clip then a gap. This constricted my ability to edit because, the effects
that I wanted to do the software didn’t have, which made it difficult to
edit it. Then the text font constricted my ability because, it didn’t have
the font that used for my poster and DVD covers, so I had use a
different one which means people would be able to put the link
together between.
8. Technical Qualities
Similarities: One similarity is that they would both have to edit the colour and shade of the
poster to enhance the shadows to produce the outline of the person. This is so they can get
what they want from the poster, for example the colours of the texts would needed to be edit,
same with the shade of the poster.
A second similarities would the trailer would need to edit by having the clips shorten with the
effects from scene to scene. This is so it makes the trailer more interesting to watch and
incredibly boring to watch, also making the clips shorter so it doesn’t give anything away for the
film.
Differences:
One difference is that the actual product has what company made the film and who produce it,
while product doesn’t have anything on it for what company made it or who produce it, this
help my final product by giving people more information and they could like the company made
the film.
