captivated me. I found myself engrossed in the story of the poor farmer Wang Lung
whose love for his land allowed him to overcome many odds including famine, flood

In a paper published in 2011 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, researchers tested the common caricature of legal realism that justice is
what the judge ate for breakfast . They studied eight parole judges in Israel over 50
days in a 10 month period, who spent their entire days reviewing applications for
parole. What they found was shocking, that the percentage of favorable rulings
dropped gradually to nearly zero within each decision session and returned abruptly
to around 65% after a break. This is illustrated in the diagram below, where dotted
lines indicate food breaks. This was after accounting for different variables and
checking for alternative explanations.
This goes to show that the human mind is limited. Even moral decisions made by
highly educated individuals cannot escape the curse of mental fatigue as shown by
the Israelian judge study. The human rationality is also often plagued by hindsight
bias, the anchoring effect, the bandwagon effect, negativity bias, amidst a whole list
of cognitive biases, best illustrated in Daniel Kahneman s Thinking Fast Slow.
If we could design a machine that can make decisions without the fallibility of human
rationality, would it then be a better idea to let the machines make decisions on our
behalf, and save us from the mistakes of our minds?

The Bhagavad Gita or simply Gita, conceivably the most recognized of all nonpareil
scriptures of Hindu culture and philosophy, is universally perceived as one of the
world s ethical literatures. The Sanskrit title, Bhagavad Gita, is commonly construed
as Song of the Lord. The Gita is incorporated into the sixth book of the longest Hindu
classic, Mahabharata, although it is known to be a subsequent accretion to the epic,
which stands on its own distinction. The ideology encapsulated in the Bhagavad Gita,
doing action with detachment from the consequences is relevant and vital to our
understanding of way of life even in the contemporary western world. The teachings
of the Gita assist people to manage their states of mental agitation, desires and
emotions which will lead them to take right decisions followed by right actions. This
certainly explains its immense recognition both in the East and the West.
Distinguished philosophers, intellectuals, and scientists have conceded that the
Bhagavad Gita presents profound wisdom. Gandhi once proclaimed:
When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not
one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad Gita and find a verse to comfort
me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those

Booker T. Washington rose up from slavery and illiteracy to become the foremost
educator and leader of black Americans at the turn of the century. He was born on
April 5, 1856 in Franklin County, Virginia. As a child he worked in the salt mines
but always found time for education. Washington constantly dreamed of college but
as an African American this dream was nearly impossible. His scrupulous working
habits from the mines set him out for college at the Hampton Institute. He
graduated in 1876 and became a teacher at a rural school. After 2 years of teaching,
he went back to the Hampton Institute and was a professor here for 2 more years.
His next challenge would be at a new all black college, Tuskegee Institute where he
would become president. Under Washington s leadership (1881 1915), Tuskegee
Institute became an important force in black education. Washington won a Harvard
honorary degree in 1891.
Washington was powerful and influential in both the black and white communities.
He was a confidential advisor to President Roosevelt and for years, presidential
political appointments of African Americans were cleared through him. By the last
