Essays About Service
Writing an essay on the topic of "Essays About Service" can be a challenging task, requiring a
delicate balance between personal reflection, academic analysis, and a comprehensive
understanding of the subject matter. The difficulty lies not only in the technical aspects of
crafting a well-structured and coherent essay but also in the depth of insight one must provide to
do justice to the theme.
Firstly, delving into the concept of service requires a nuanced exploration of various dimensions,
such as community service, public service, and personal acts of kindness. One must navigate
through the intricacies of defining service, its significance, and the impact it has on individuals
and communities. The essay should go beyond a mere description and delve into the
philosophical and ethical aspects, examining the motivations behind acts of service and their
societal implications.
Moreover, crafting an essay on service necessitates a careful blend of personal experiences and
broader perspectives. Balancing the subjective with the objective can be challenging, as the
writer must articulate their own encounters with service while incorporating relevant theories
and research to provide a well-rounded analysis. This synthesis requires both creativity and
academic rigor, demanding a meticulous approach to research and reflection.
Furthermore, the challenge extends to the need for originality and avoiding clichГ©s. With the

is crucial. It requires a deep exploration of one's thoughts and experiences to present an authentic
perspective that stands out amidst a sea of similar narratives.

Louis XIV Essay
Louis XIV (1638 1715) Although Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great,
brought death and destruction through his wars, there are many positive aspects of
his reign, such as the creation of Versailles and the building of France s national
army. He did what had never been done before. He changed the lifestyle and the
attitude of France by creating one of the most powerful monarchies ever to be built
and at the same time, reassured all the nobility and other wealthy groups of their
political and social standings. He made it clear that he was the final decision maker
yet he still needed the help of the nobility and other authorities. Louis XIV was born
on September 5, 1638 in a little town called Saint Germain en Laye of France. He...

In 1660, Louis married Marie Theresa of Austria, the daughter of the King of
Spain, in order to keep peace between France and Spain. Louis childhood had come
to an end and now it was time to take control. This was something that no one
believed Louis XIV was capable of. Cardinal Marazin died on March 9, 1661. This
was a turning point in Louis life. Louis announced that he was going to take on
full responsibility for the ruling of the kingdom. This shows an example of how
Louis did not follow tradition. This marked the end of the power of the French
nobility. There was no longer going to be a chief minister. Louis wanted to deal
with the nobles directly. He had a new way of dictatorship, which Louis claimed
was by divine right. Louis XIV viewed himself as a representative of God and
considered all rebellion and disobedience sinful. He believed that he had the right
to dictate because he was put on Earth by God to rule. Another thing that Louis
changed was the appearance and way of life of France. These great towns of France
went under a sort of metamorphosis . The landscape was altered and monuments
were built everywhere. Louis decided that he wanted to isolate the center of
government from the city of Paris, so he constructed the palace of Versailles. It was
an object of universal admiration and enhanced French prestige. It became Louis
permanent address in 1682 and was also the home to thousands of the more important
nobles, royal officials, and
The Fashion Industry In The Devil Wears Prada
It can be said that the Fashion industry is not for everyone, especially Anne
Hathaway s character in the 2006 Film The Devil Wears Prada. The fashion industry
is one of the hardest business to work in and this film shows it. The fashion Industry
takes a lot of time, money, dedication, and uses lots of resources that Anne Hathaways
role, Andy Sachs learns quickly. As coming out of Northwestern College as a
journalist she lands a job with the magazine Runway as their junior Assistant for the
head editor and chef Miranda Priestly, who is played by the wonderful Meryl Streep.
Miranda could be described as strict, stern, demanding, and a overall perfectionist.
However, by the end of dealing with Mirandas demands for a year Andy can only
hope she will score a job as a reporter or writer else where, so the question is will
she do it? When Andy begins her job as the junior assistant you can definitely see
that she struggles a lot. Andy walking in had no sense of style, had no knowledge
of what Runway Magazine was, and also had no idea that many people had wanted
her position at this company. In fact the first day that Andy arrives at runway
magazines home office she is absolutely appalled. Emily Charlton, Miranda s Senior
assistant was supposed to interview Andy, but unfortunately as soon as Andy and
Emily sat down to chat the phone had rang. It was Mirandas driver stating that they
were outside and to prepare. With the look of madness in Emily s eyes you could see

Why Is High School Football Dangerous
High school football be one of the more dangerous sports, but it also has a great
impact on the players and the society around it. High school football creates a sense
of community and love for the sport, gives the players traits that they may need for
the rest of their lives, and even though it is still dangerous, it has made tremendous
success saftey wise from when the sport was first introduced. High school footballhas
a good effect on it s team and the people involved.
One of the main reasons why football is as big as it is today is because of the love
and passion for the sport and the community it brings with it. All kinds of people love
high school football; coaches, students, players, parents, etc. There are too many

Studies show that because of the way some football players tackle, which is going
in with the head instead of the shoulder, that concessions are very common.
Injuries are also very common in this particular sport because of the general
toughness and tackling in the game. But studies to help prevent these injuries and
concessions have had much success since football first started. The OHSAA
(Ohio High School Athletic Association) has a committee that has been looking at
the possibility of playing eight man football which would help decrease the risk of
injuries during the game. This is already offered in 18 states. Other options are
being taken down from the NFL to high school. An example of one of these options
is banning crown of the helmet hits. Birk coached a freshmen team during the first
season this rule was created. He explains that he saw how difficult it was to adapt
to these new rules at first but over eventually they started to get used to it. By the
end of that season you could literally see players trying the pull back, and that was
amazing, Birk states at the end of his

your finger, sleep for 100 years, true love s kiss? I m Fauna and I am going to tell you
the real story of a girl. She wasn t named Sleeping Beauty but Boa Beauty.
A long time ago, there was a king and queen who yearned for a child. One day, as
the queen was walking along the beach, she noticed a piece of enchanted seaweed
stuck on the hot sand trying to move back into the ocean.
Help me please! begged the seaweed, Help me! .
Taking pity on the seaweed because it was starting to dry and shrivel up, the queen
picked it up and tossed it back into the ocean. Thank you for helping me. it sighed, In

in a puff of smoke. Everyone was afraid! I haven t given my gift yet. said the
seventh fairy quietly. I can use it to soften the curse. The princess will not die but
fall into a deep sleep until a prince awakens her with a kiss and places a new boa
around her neck. The king was determined to save his daughter, he announced that
all feathered in boas in the kingdom must be plucked. The queen was so sad. As
Boa Rose grew up, all of her special fairy gifts came true. She was beautiful, funny,
curious, fashionable, and everyone loved her. The princess was turning 16 the next
day so the king and queen decided to go to the village to find a gift for her. While
exploring in the castle alone, she found a hidden room full of costumes and feathered

How Does Steinbeck A Sympathetic Character
Steinbeck is sort of sympathetic towards his characters , but also very realistic. The
end of this story really shows that realism by the writer giving the story a sad ending
like most realistic stories should have. This really shows at the end when George is
contemplating on killing Lennie. Steinbeck shows the real world of poverty, limited
resources, limited social skills, and violence going along with the American dream,
wealth, friendship, and loyalty. Steinbeck uses clear and simple language for the
main part of the story. Some words in dialogues are dialect and abbreviated which
sometimes makes it difficult to understand at first sight. Steinbeck emphasizes
dreams and companionship throughout the book. George dreams about being
William Hemingway s The Cafe
After the older waiter turns off the light to the cafe and closes up, he then proceeds
to carry the conversation with himself. This again, displays his loneliness. The text
states, Turning off the electric light he continue the conversation with himself. It is
the light of course but it is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant. You do not
want music. Certainly you do not want music. Nor can you stand before a barwith
dingily although hat is all that is provided for these hours (Hemingway, 382). He
continues to convince himself that the cafe is needed for all the people who are
lonely, like him, and the old man. However, it is time to close up and head home.
Instead, he decides to go to a bodega. The text doesn t overtly state why he goes to
the bodega, but you can infer that he is trying to understand the younger waiter. He
knows that a bodega isn t like the cafe at all, but he is willing to give it a try.
Besides, he doesn t want to go home to nothing. The text goes on to say the
following, What did he fear? It was not fear or dread. It was a nothing that he knew
too well. It was all a nothing and a man was nothing too. It was only that and light
was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order (Hemingway, 383). In order to
cope with nothing, he too, needs to go to a cafe but none are open at this hour. He
then goes on to say a prayer but replaces the lord, god, and religion for nothing or
nada. For the older waiter, he doesn t find meaning in religion. It

Mother Dearest, You were alive for 19 years of my life, but I only had you for 16

I spent my entire childhood being a mini adult. I spent it being a parentto myself, my
siblings and to you; my own mother. I gave up on making friends because I felt it was
selfish of me to do so when I was needed so badly at home. The times I did get the
courage enough to make friends I would go to their houses and I would boil with
envy and jealousy. Their parents while very loose with their rules and many of my
friends being very unruly children. None the less they were still parents. I often at
times felt as though you were my peer and not my mother. I often at times felt

The concurring judgment of 2:1 was pronounced by the SC on 20th January, 2012.
The decision has been widely discussed because of interesting point of law and
huge revenue involved of Rs. 11,000 ( plus ) Crores for the Government of India.
The loss of revenue is not limited only to Government s losing the Vodafone s case,
the stand of the Govt. has weakened in other similar cases. The legal issue related to
the interpretation of provisions of section 9 of the Income tax Act, 1961 (Act), read
with section 5 of the Act. In the first round of litigation, the matter primarily related
to the issue whether any income accrued or arose to Vodafone in India on entering
into agreements between two companies for acquiring controlling interest, which one
foreign company held in an Indian company, by another foreign company and, hence,
Vodafone was obliged to deduct tax at source on such acquisition. The basic question
involved was whether Indian tax authorities had a right to impose tax in respect of a
transaction where both the transacting companies were based outside India, but the
subjectmatter of transfer was in India. Hence, the notice issued was challenged.2
DECISION AGAINST THE IT DEPARTMENT The Supreme Court has decided the
case against the IT Department holding that no tax is leviable in the situation when
the transaction of outright sale happened between two nonresidents of a capital asset
outside India, though the capital asset (share) was

Pamplona was a struggle between French backed Navarrese troops and Spanish
troops, occurring during the Spanish conquest of Navarre. In 1512, most
Navarrese towns consented to be under French rule. Before an agreement could be
signed however, King Ferdinand of Spain seized the capital, Pamplona, fortifying
its walls, and claimed all of Navarre for Spain. Later on, in 1521, Francis I, King of
France reconquered Pamplona, with their victory short lived as Spain would

Ignatius of Loyola Ignatius of Loyola, born to DoГ±a MarГna SГЎnchez de Licona
and BeltrГЎn de OnГЎz in 1491, created a legacy much bigger than himself by
founding the Society of Jesus. Serving to the treasurer s household (VelГЎzquez) at

in which Ignatius placed his life at the feet of God. Traveling to Manresa after his
recovery, Ignatius created the Spiritual Exercises to help others grow closer to
God setting the stage for a new religious order. Pursuing this path, Ignatius received
a well rounded education from the University of Paris, attracting new followers,
such as Peter Favre and Francis Xavier, and making plans to travel to the Holy
Land. However, these plans were curtailed in the shadow of conflict at the Holy
Land. Instead, the companions decided it was time to place themselves at the
service of the Holy Father by means of the Society of Jesus with Ignatius delivering
his first mass on Christmas Eve, 1538 in the Chapel of the Manger in Rome s

Respiratory System

The respiratory system helps with breathing, inhaling and exhaling. The respiratory
systems main function is to give oxygen to the body s cells and get rid of the carbon
dioxide the cells produce. Breathing would be impossible without the respiratory
system, which includes the nose, throat, voice box, windpipe, and lungs. In this essay
I plan on explaining how the respiratory system functions as well as its parts.
The exchange of two gases called oxygen and carbon dioxide, this process is called
respiration. As humans we need oxygen to survive and generate carbon dioxide.
Since too much carbon dioxide is bad for our body we trade the carbon dioxide ...

In our book Elsevier says, Because this amount comes and goes regularly like the
tides of the sea, it is referred to as the tidal volume (TV). The book also states, The
largest amount of air taken in one expiration is known as the vital capacity (VC).
(Elsevier 2008). People that have diseases such as lung disease, emphysema, and
heart problems have their tidal volume and vital capacity checked on a normal
basis since conditions such as those can cause an abnormal amount of air going in
and out of the lungs. When we use a lot of energy that requires us to use more
oxygen since oxygen is what gives us the energy we need. The harder we work or
run or do activities the more oxygen we need to intake to give to the millions of
cells in the body. This is the reason when we run we breathe harder and deeper
because our body is trying to keep up with us. When we breathe harder and faster
our heart is also beating faster which is causing blood to pump more through the
body each minute. Therefore the red blood cells make more trips and deliver more
oxygen to the tissue cells also getting rid of more carbon dioxide than if we were
doing nothing. Located in the medulla and pons of our brain is what is called the
respiratory control center. In our book on page 382 it says, These centers are in turn
regulated by a number of inputs from receptors located in varying areas of the body.
These receptors can sense the need for changing the
Definition Of Heroes
Heroes At the beginning of last week I was asked the question What is a hero?
Without a hesitation I answered someone with powers who puts their powers to
work when someone is in need of a hand. As the week continued I started to read
poems, texts, and look in the perspectives of others towards heroes. I became more
open minded and generated a new outlook on heroes. A herodoesn t have to be
someone with powers, capes, and enemies that they have to battle with. A hero can
also be a person who risks their life for the better of someone else s life. Included in
this hero comes courage, bravery, strong minded, and many other characteristics.

One of the texts that I read was from this book that my school provides to all the
students, springboard. In this book there was a passage that was called A Man.
Although I read many texts this one captured my eye most. A man starts off with a
sad tone. It talks about how while fighting for his country, he lost an arm and was
suddenly afraid. After continuing to read the poem the tone of the narrator begins
to become more positive. He ends off the poem by saying From that moment on,
he set himself to do everything with twice as much enthusiasm. And where the arm
had been torn away a wing grew. This poem was heroic because from the start it
talks about him being a soldier. Soldiers are heroes, each and every one of them.
Not many people have the courage to put their life on the line for our country. The
reason why I feel protected and safe is because of these soldiers. I have the
freedom to speak, think, and act how I want because of these heroes. But, not only
that, he is someone to look up to for not taking his disability and letting himself
down. Instead, he took it and learned how to live with it. I am almost positive that
most people I know would use their disability as an excuse. Not only that but they
would dwell on it for the rest of their lives. This man knew he had either his life or
one of his features/body parts on the line when he agreed to be a soldier. He
Music In The Romantic Era
Following the Pre Classical and Classical periods, a new, very distinctive style of
music emerged. The Romantic Era Lasted from the year 1820 up until the year
1900. The Romantic Era consisted of composers taking a more unique and
expressive style of music. Hector Berlioz, Fryderyck Chopin, and Robert Schumann
are considered to be the most influential composers of the Romantic Era. Nationalism
and Exoticism played a very big part of musicexpression during this period. Both, Art
song and German Lieder music styles were invented and told stories in a musical
form. These three composers helped shape this era through the use of the pianoand the
use of a more supernatural realm style of music.
Hector Berlioz was born in the year 1803 in France. At the age of twenty two he left
his career to pursue his musical career. He went on to composing his first
symphony at the age of twenty seven. Hector was highly criticized in his homeland
France for his music. It was very painful for hector to be rejected from the musical
community and deemed as a laughing stock. After receiving the negative reviews
of his music, he stated, I belong to a nation which has ceased to be interested in the
nobler manifestations of intelligence, and whose only deity is the golden calf. The
Parisians have become a barbarous people (Berlioz, 2016). He had to work very hard
to be able to afford all of the costs for his performances and was pretty much ignored
throughout his musical career. He was later
Short Term And Long Term Effects Of Concussions
Winters 3 two concussions, then a third is 2 4 times more likely, and if they ve had
three concussions, then they are 3 to 9 times more likely to receive their fourth

This is why there is such a great danger in returning to early especially in sports.
During your concussion you will probably be recommended to miss school or work
because taking in information while concussed can actually hurt the brain. After a
significant amount of time you will have to see your doctor again so he can diagnose
you as concussion free and you can return to your routines without being held down

There are many short term and long term effects someone can experience from a
concussion. Some of the short term dangers may range from a week to a month,
while the long term effects will range from 1 year to the rest of the person s life. All
the short term effects as headaches, vertigo, change in sleep patterns, lightheadedness,
tinnitus (Ringing in ears), coma, blurred vision/seeing stars, being dazed, nausea

yourself and your brain. If you can imagine having 3 4 concussions the dangers
would become much larger and much more likely to happen. There are also many
emotional and cognitive effects a concussion will have on your brain.

Freedom In George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty-Four
Ludwig von Mises once stated, Freedom can only be won by men unconditionally
committed to the principles of freedom (Mises 95). Throughout George Orwell s
novel, Nineteen Eighty Four, the protagonist, Winston Smith, is caught between the
bounds of his individual perception of freedom and society s contrasting reality.
While much of the society around him mindlessly follows the Party and Big Brother,
Winston finds himself stopping to question what makes mankind free. As he begins
to see the truths in the world around him, he is placed in a conflict with the Party s

Gender Inequality With Stereotypical Representations
From...
Essay #1 Society often projects the ideal ideas of what is acceptable according to its
standards formed by time and trends. Gender inequalities along with stereotypical
representations from society are presented as themes among Sandra Cisnero s and
Junot DiМЃaz s short stories. While society may present and project an accepted
view among the gendernorms, each person is unique in his or her opinions and
experiences. Though society often portrays the stereotypical dominant role of the
male and the submissive female and an accepted view on heterosexuality, not all
people classify under these categories. Women are sometimes perceived as feeble
minded but sometimes underrated in actuality. One example is Anguiano... by Sandra

While the mother is working and trying to maintain the household while dealing with
the absent father, this demonstrates that sometimes women are not as feeble as they
may be perceived, especially in cases such as having an absent significant other.
Another example is Cisnero s Bien Pretty where the female narrator finds herself
quickly falling in love with Flavio ManguiМЃa and feels emotionally weak, but
ultimately discovers that he commited an infidelity with two other women (Cisnero,
Bien Pretty 138). While the narrator may be emotionally weak in terms of having
feelings for her significant other, she concludes that she could happily live alone
without a significant other; society sometimes does not approve of this necessarily,
but expects women to be submissive to a man. While society portrays men are
portrayed as dominant and the leader of the household as and may determine the
idea of masculinity, men may be susceptible to the same hardships as women as well.
One example is DiМЃaz s Fiesta where the boy narrator and his brother, Rafi,
withold his father s infidelity a secret from their mother for favor of keeping the
family together. While acts of infidelity are frowned upon and the father may be
described as a toxic figure to the household with child abuse, the boy narrator suffers

The Legacy Of Nelson Mandela
Imagine being systematically oppressed from the moment you exited the womb.
All your civil rights, based on the amount of melanin in your skin. Drinking from
the wrong water fountain, could even get you thrown into jail. Coincidently; this
was the life, of black South Africans from the moment of Dutch colonization in
1652, to the first true democratic election in 1994. Apartheid, meaning
separateness in Afrikaans; was legal segregation enforced by The National Party
(NP) from 1948 to 1994. It legally imposed preexisting policies of racial
discrimination on the Majority of the South African population. The entire basis of
the racist policies, was the darker your complexion the less legal rights you had.
Presumably this injustice, could have continued much longer if it weren t for all
involved in the fight against the NP, however the man who arguably contributed the
most, was Nelson Mandela. He ended an apartheid, with both his philanthropy and
political prowess. He united a nation that used to be segregated; which seemed a
daunting task at the time, but through the sweat and bloodshed he achieved the
impossible. This alone exhibited his heroic characteristics, but to be more precise:
both his actions and inactions lead to his success. Furthermore, Mandela was both a
strong leader and forgiving at the same time. Being in the forefront of the
abolishment movement, was an extremely risky move during the apartheid. He
risked his life for what he believed in, and this personal
Theodore Roosevelt s Influences
Theodore Roosevelt was a really interesting man with opinions that changed the
world. Roosevelt is known for a great life. He was known as a trust buster. And he
shaped the way politics are now. Theodore Roosevelt influenced the modern U.S.
in many ways. Theodore Roosevelt is known for how he grew up and how he died.
Theodore Roosevelt s childhood was hard and rough. When he was a child he had
asthma which was hard for him. He also had a weak heart, so the doctors told him
to get a desk job when he grew up and not strain himself. He went to Harvard
University, then after that, he went to Columbia Law School. He didn t stay long at

He was good with knowing when to attack. He always found the right time and
place to make an action. He liked to plan ahead because this gave him the edge to
breaking the monopoly or trust. He never gave up on breaking a trust or a
monopoly. Even after he failed he never gave up. He tried everything he could to
break trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt tried to use his Presidential powers to
break trusts and monopolies. He made laws to make it easier for him to break
trusts and monopolies. He tried to use all his presidential powers by making laws.
Roosevelt passed 6 laws to make it easier for him as a president, and as a trust
buster. One of the specific laws he passed was called the Sherman Act. This law
declared illegal for all combinations in restraint of trade. This law ultimately failed
because whenever he tried to use it in court the judge either just denied it or the
judge found a way around it. This means that the Sherman Act did not help
Roosevelt break any trades or monopolies. Roosevelt was looking for a major
monopoly to break, and he came across J.P. Morgan. Roosevelt came at this case
aggressively because he really wanted to take down this monopoly. J.P. Morgan
controlled a large chunk of railroads, and railroad shipping in the northern U.S.
with a company known as the Northern Securities. Morgan was one of the most
wealthy men in the U.S. because of his one large monopoly. One morning Morgan s
phone rang, and when he found out that Roosevelt was attacking his business he
was very angry. Morgan was angry because Roosevelt was treating like a common
criminal, Morgan ended up going to the white house and a compromise had to be
found in court. Roosevelt ended up breaking his first major monopoly
The Effect Of Spending Time On Nature And Its Stress...
Counselors dedicate their lives to helping people emotionally in need, and eventually
this dedication begins to produce distress which, if not dealt with can lead into more
serious issues. One of the more serious issues that counselors are at higher risk to
experience as job related stress increases is burnout. In order for counselors to
maintain healthy levels of compassion while maintaining their ability to help their
clients, implementing a self care plan. This self care plan enables counselors to
effectively cope with frequent job related stress. If the self care plan does not
effectively cope with this stress, then burnout is likely to be experienced. However,
there are successful strategies to prevent burnout and enables the counselor to help
hurting people for the long duration. One such plausible self care plan that effectively
copes with job related stress includes frequent exposures to nature and the outdoors.
In this paper, I examine the relationship between spending time in nature and its stress
reducing capabilities. Because burnout is a stress induced syndrome, attempts to
decrease stress levels with nature exposures, should also prevent burnout.
Unfortunately, most counselors who experience burnout seldom engage in healthy
coping strategies nor do they engage in them frequently enough. It is important for
counselors to maintain healthy coping strategies in order to help their clients to the
best of their abilities for the long duration. By
Why Is Julius Caesar A Tyrant
Julius Caesar s death in William Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar was not the right
thing to do because very little evidence throughout has been given to prove that
Caesar was or would have been a tyrant, and because of his death a war sparked
afterward destroying the Roman Republic, the just proves the fact that this murder
can not be justified in any situation. The conspirators killed Julius Caesar mainly
because they were jealous Jealous of his power , rather than for the good of Rome.
Anthony said All the conspirators save only he / Did that they did in envy of great
Caesar; / He only in a general honest thought / And common good to all, made one of
them (IIIII.iiiii.69 73). This, however, is still not the right reason if there... Show more

Importance Of Beauty
The Importance of Beauty to One s Self
WHAT SHAPES OUR IDEA OF BEAUTY How we interpret beauty is because of
many different things. Social media, celebrities, the internet, and models are some of
the biggest ones. We see all these fit and beautiful people posting on social media or
internet, or posing in a magazine. Advertising beauty is everywhere. On our phones,
billboards, television, and on commercials. There are also personal things that
contribute to our idea of beauty. Our family members, our culture, and us, individuals.
Tobias HГјrter, a Philosopher said, Beauty is at the core of our utmost desires. We
strive for 0fulfillment through beauty. Obviously, that beauty can look different in
various cultures and eras. But the very longing for beauty is a constant.
Eric Jarosinski, a Philologist said, what shapes our idea of beauty is Probably the
same things that shape our idea of everything else. Ideologies, experiences, biology,
media, money, etc. Beauty has a big impact on our lives. Tobias HГјrter, a
Philosopher said, Its impact is bigger than we would assume. I believe that we base
a lot of decisions on beauty. It is the very thing that moves us.
Something universal to the concept of beauty

Child Labor In The British Industrial Revolution
Child labor. A very cruel part of the British Industrial Revolution. Among the worst,
children working at cotton mills was very harsh, dangerous, and terrible. In this
essay, I will be explaining why working at the cotton mills was the worst kind of
child labor in the British Industrial Revolution. Let s begin with the first two
reasons. Firstly, working conditions were horrible at the cotton mills. The
atmosphere was warm and dingy, and poor hygiene led to sickness and disease.
Not to mention the poor conditions outside the cotton mills from the coal mine s
smoke and other dangerous gases and chemicals. Secondly, children had injustice
with long hours and very low pay, working twelve hours a day for a couple of
pennies. If you were working at the time for food, water, shelter, and other needs,
they were very low standard and were the bare minimum. Says Bertha Miller of
Thomasville, NC, When paydays come around, I drawed three dollars. That was...

Some children were weighted they had to carry a weight around their neck while

their masters. One of the punishments comes from a lady named Sarah Carpenter:
There was a young woman, Sarah Goodling, who was poorly and so she stopped
her machine. James Birch, the overlooker knocked her to the floor. She got up as
well as she could. He knocked her down again. Then she was carried to the
apprentice house. Her bed fellow found her dead in bed. There were just as harsh
punishments for little children and adults alike. Possibly the worst fact about the
cotton mills was that death was not entirely uncommon. Exposure to dangerous
machinery, warm atmospheres, and poor hygiene led to disease, fatigue, and death. A
disease that was common was byssinosis, or brown lung. It was caused by breathing
in leftover cotton strands. It was extremely

most significant reformist political movement. The Populist Party, which was also
known as the People s Party was established in 1891 and only existed for a short
period of time. The Populist movement was very successful and brought about many
remarkable changes in the United States. Another party that was notably seen several
years later following the decline of the Populist Party, was the Progressive Party. It
greatly differed the Populist Party, but stirred a mass movement in America s society.
Both parties are substantially known for legendary ideals, even though they support
two completely different platforms. The Populist Party began as a result of farmer
Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton
Confessional Poets Sylvia Plath (1932 1963) and Anne Sexton (1928 1974) both
explored similar themes such as tone, structure, and symbolism. Many of their poems
were cries for help, which resulted into metal illness, depression, and suicide. In
1958, Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath met, and much to their surprise had a few things
in common. They both were fascinated with death and suicide. Both Sexton s and
Plath s poetry are considered as confessional poetryin which they were very honest,
depressed, and had suicidal or homicidal tendencies. Sylvia and Anne s views on
what happened in their life and on independence, are what nearly separates them
from other confessional poets. Sexton and Plath s poetry range over a variety of
topics such as death, suicide, rage, and mourning. They both utilize a convincing
use of symbolism, deep image, metaphors, and soul searching. Plath s The
Colossus , Full Fathom Five , Daddy , and Sexton s And one for My Dame and All
My Pretty Ones , are very enraged and different feminist perspectives, giving
different views on the relationships with a father and a husband. Inspired by their
true life memories, Plath and Sexton explore a variety of themes in their poems.
They both have different aspects of the relationship between a father and a daughter.
The fathers in Sexton and Plath s life had a major position and made an influence on

Essay On Should Female Soccer Players Be Paid More
Women Soccer Players Should be Paid More In the year 2015, the Women s
United States national team won the World Cup. When they won they earned a $2
million. Even though this was a great accomplishment, in the 2014 Men s World
Cup, Germany won and earned a whopping $35 million. This is a major pay gap
between the men and women s soccer teams. I believe that women soccer players
should be paid as much or more than their male counterparts. Many people believe
that men and women soccer players are paid perfectly the way they are, but the way
that the women are getting paid is an enormous issue in today s society. Women

Millions of young girls dream to be like them one day. When these players come to
town, the tickets sell out fast. For example, in Denver, the Women s National Team
played a friendly against Japan, when the tickets went up for sale, they sold out in just
ten minutes! This happens everywhere when the national team comes to town. This
is raising lots of ticket sales for the Women s National Team, but the Women s
National team isn t getting the money that they deserve. Another big example is that
when the women played Japan, in 2015, in the World Cup championship, there were
more than twenty five million people watching. This is the most views that any game
in the English speaking language (men or women) has received. Even though they are
selling more tickets and having more viewers, they are still not getting the money that
they rightfully deserve. Even though they are bringing in more profit, they still aren t
making the money that they should be getting. It is important for the Women s
National Teams to stand up for what is right. They are being torn away from the
money they deserve for nothing. Why is
Martin Luther s Catholic Beliefs
Martin Luther, a name that would be fairly familiar to most people, but why? Why
do so many people know about him, and what did he actually do? Those are the
topics that will be discovered, because he did many amazing things. He questioned
the catholic beliefs, proved that we are saved by grace and not by works, and he
also allowed the world to make religions of their choice instead of being forced to
Catholicism. When talking about Luther s view on Catholicism, it is a very mixed
topic. The reason for this includes that fact that he actually grew up a catholic, and
then later in life became a catholic monk. So he initially devoted his life to being a
catholic, but soon after doing that, he realized his full potential. Instead of just... Show

He had studied the Bible, and knew that this was not an act that they were told to
do. He knew that God would never want anyone to do what the Catholic Church
asked people to do. They would sell holy relics that would symbolize Christ, or
God, and people would be obliged to buy these so show their honor to God
(historylearningsite.co.uk). The Catholic Church would also sell indulgences to
people. These were the worst of all, because they literally did nothing other than
give the church money. From how far the church strayed from what the Bible
actually told the people to do, Martin saw the flaws and knew he had to change
something. He made it his goal to expose what the church was doing, and tell the
people how they were being manipulated. He proved that, For it is by grace you
have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of
God (Ephesians 2:8). Last of all, the biggest way that Luther affected the church, is
the way he freed everyone from Catholicism. Luther did not say that Catholicism
was evil, though he did enable it for others to study on their own, and he also made
it so that they were not forced to be a Catholic, and they could be any religion that
they chose. Now before Luther, pretty much everyone was forced to be a Catholic,
so when the option of changing religions came up because of

Irish Culture in America Essay
Irish Culture in America
I.Introduction
The history of Ireland is diverse and fact is mixed with fiction. Through the years in
which Ireland had a famine, many people migrated over to the United States in
order to have a better life and gain some prosperity. When they arrived they were met
with less than open arms, but rather a whole new world of discrimination. I will be
discussing the summary I have done on the discrimination of Irish in America today,
followed by my reactions, two other Irish blooded reactions, the history, identities,
and transitions, of these people of which I learned through doing this research.

Not all the Irish drink and the stereotype is false in many cases pertaining to Irish
Americans. Another value of the Irish is uncertainty avoidance, which concerns the
degree to which people who feel threatened by ambiguous situations respond by
avoiding them (Martin Nakayama, 2000, 70). This leads the Irish to prefer to reduce
rules, accept dissent, and take risks (Martin Nakayama, 2000, 70). This can be
supported by the massive immigration to the United States during the Potato Famine.
Many Irish took to the seas during this period, and it was a great risk for so many
to cross a sea and enter a world new to them, breaking away from the British power
that controlled their lives. This emigration also demonstrates a sense of free will,
which encompasses the need for change and to continue trying even if you fail. I
noticed that the Irish are perceived as a group that works hard for what it wants and
doesn t seem to give in to the norms of society. The new vision of Irish immigrants
seems to be much healthier than that of previous generalizations. The action and
doing value, which is entangled in the values, seems to be present in the lives of Irish
immigrants, The young Irish coming over here today are much more sophisticated,
more educated, and more ambitious (Krim Early, 1995, p.33). There is a definite
sense of the contact hypothesis in the Santa Clara Valley, where cultures seem to

David Hume Matters Of Fact
David Hume was an 18th century Scottish empiricist philosopher who wrote the
essay, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding in 1748. Hume was not only
one of the first philosophers to write in English, but was also the first to really
discuss that we cannot know most things with certainty. In this essay, Hume divides
the knowledge that we can know with certainty and that which we cannot into two
categories: relations of ideas, and matters of fact. Relations of Ideas include the
topics of math, such as Geometry, Algebra and Arithmetic. It is this category in
which we can have knowledge with certainty. Relations of Ideas does not use the
senses or any outside influences to discover these truths. These truths are

This is based on the fact that the future will be like the past. According to Hume,
relationships between objects are known simply by observing their interactions.
Hypotheses are developed based on common experience and cause is established by
observation only. Although there were future philosophers who disagreed with
several aspects of Hume s philosophy of science, Hume was really the first
philosopher to start thinking along the line of how science has progressed in our
current day. He talked about how most knowledge cannot be known with certainty
and began to discuss the idea of probability. Although controversial during his time,
Hume did take a bold stand, which was instrumental in moving science forward.
Hume can be summarized with the following

Critical Analysis Of Agunpakhi
Agunpakhi, published in April 2008 is the first full fledged novel written by Hassan
Ajizul Haque. He was born in1939 in West Bengal and just after the completion of
his school studies, his family had to leave India for East Bengal to avoid any
insidious after effect of the partition. Atin Bandyapadhaya and Sunanda Sikdar both

an in depth study may bring out the truth that it is a tale of metamorphosis or a total
transformation of a humanself into a metaphorical phoenix, born out of the fire of
riot. It s a tale of a woman, who struggles within and ultimately is purified. She
becomes bold and decisive to denounce the so called geographical concepts of
boundaries which break the human hearts and yield unimaginable destitution and
suffering. It raises some basic questions of humanism and shows ways to bimukti

Biblical Interpretation Of The Book Theophilus

the writer referred to him as most excellent. When we look at this title, we can see
that he must have been one with a high position in Rome. But in Acts, he is simply
referred to in title as Theophilus. Luke was known as a doctor. But In those days,
doctors did not hold positions of high status. The ones with high social positions
would take the doctors around with them as their personal physicians. Luke must
have been a doctor who was attached to someone s house. And so Luke must have
evangelized Theophilus and changed him. Luke wanted to testify the faith of of
apostle to him. Theophilus consists of two syllables in Greek, meaning Loving
God. theos(God) + philein (love) : the one who loves God. The name of the person
Luke evangelized holds the meaning of the one who loves God. Therefore, in his
name lies the meaning, the one who loves God. It can therefore be said that
underlying Acts is a dedication to the ones who love God. 1) you will receive
baptism of the Holy Spirit. [Acts 1:3] After his suffering, he showed himself to these

Andrew Crowe Monologue
Inspector Male, I just wanted to reach out and let you know the amazing efforts of
Andrew Crowe and Greg MacArthur on Monday December 28th. Sorry for the long
winded e mail but I think it s necessary.
Background: Sue Visser contacted me several months ago and purchased several
#K9HERO pups. She then went around to 50 different landmarks in Guelph and
took photos with #K9HRERO to help promote our Where is #K9HERO now
Twitter Social Media Campaign. She then brought me a thumb drive with the 50
pics for us to use. As we chatted she told me about Rohan, a 7 years old boy she
knew and that one of the dogs she bought was going to be a gift when she went to
Sick Kids the next day where he is being treated for leukemia. At that time he was
very sick and had been hospitalized for a longtime. Sue told me Rohan s dream was
to grow up and be a race car driver or K9 officer.
A few days later she came back to the station to personally tell me how much Rohan
enjoyed the #K9HERO. She told me that they hoped he d be released in the next
few weeks so that he could come home for a bit. I asked her to let me know when
Rohan would be home so that we could try to plan a surprise home visit.
Sue contacted me On December 23rd and advised that Rohan would be home the
week of December 28th and asked if it was at all possible to have one of the K9
officers attend the family home on Harvard Road.

How Does Surface Mining Affect The Environment
Lately, there has been a vast controversy over whether or not surface mining is
helpful to the environment. Surface mining takes less labor while also yielding more
coal. However, the destructiveness of it outweighs any possible benefits. The
infrastructure and different types of pollution associated with the mining phase
disturbs the ecosystems by causing problems with wildlife, water, and even people s
homes. In order for there to be a difference in how the surface miningof coalaffects
the environment, there needs to be some sort of action taken which is to have
stricter controls over mining companies such as the Vulcan Materials Company. To
begin with, Vulcan s use of surface mining endangers the environment as a whole
as it leaves behind sundry negative effects. Per ton of coal, around twenty five tons
of overburden is excavated ( Surface Mining ). To remove overburden, one must
blast through the hard cap rock which, in turn, leaves the landscape withering.
Normal organic matter is prevented from getting into the soil causing a loss in
vegetation and a displacement of wildlife. The lack of vegetation also increases the
rate of erosion. Mining generally encompasses spoil banks, which are long rows of
coalesced soil and rock, and ultimately blocks any outflow. These banks are usually
left abandoned; yet, the efforts being made to reclaim them may only result in an
erosion of the soil worsening. Along with these deleterious outcomes, there also
comes the pollutionof

Straits of Gibraltar, Mediterranean Outflow The Strait of Gibraltar is located between
the northern coast of Morocco and the southern coast of Spain. It is the only place
that allows the water of the Mediterranean to mix with the water from the Atlantic
Ocean. The Strait of Gibraltar is narrow strait separating peninsular Spain and
Gibraltar in Morocco and Europe from Morocco as well as the Ceuta/ Spain in
Africa. Also, the trait connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The
Strait of Gibraltar is known by many names including the pillar of Hercules in the

They include the upper layer of the Atlantic water flowing eastward above the
heavier and saltier Mediterranean water that flows eastwards into the Atlantic
Ocean. Also, it is referred to as the Mediterranean outflow water (Wesson Gregg,
2009). As the Mediterranean water flows to the sea it follows the rising sea floor
creating series of internal waves which are not easy seen because they do not
generate large waves, but rather horizontal surface currents that affect the roughness
of the sea surface. Internal waves can be seen from space suing special radar method
capable of detecting sensitive changes in the roughness of the water surface. The
direct link created by the Strait of Gibraltar between the Mediterranean and the
Atlantic Ocean is responsible for the generation of unique wave patterns and unique
flow. The unique patterns created as a result of the interaction between the global
evaporative and different regional forces, wind forces, and tidal forces (Robinson

Inflow and outflow: the water flowing through the Strait are more or less continuous
in both the westward and the eastward directions. The larger amount of water
comprising of the surface water of lower density and salinity flows continually
eastwards (the Mediterranean inflow) while the smaller water amounts of deeper,
saltier and heavier water flows continually westwards (the Mediterranean outflow).

Social Issue Of Abortion
The legislation addressing the social issue of abortion is a paramount interest to
me because I am a pro life supporter. I understand that as of 1973 the U.S. Supreme
Court s Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion in all fifty states. Therefore, I m not
completely fighting against abortion but rather the pro life versus pro choice aspect
of it. Although I m pro life, certain situations are necessary to get an abortionlike rape,
hazard to health of the mother or child and incest. Here in Georgia, the polls show
that forty three percent of voters are pro life and the other fifty seven percent were
pro choice because abortion is taken lightly across the nation. While reviewing your
stance on abortion I observed that you voted yes to banning partial birth abortion
except to save mother s life in October 2003, and rated 30% by NARAL, indicating
a pro life voting record in December 2003 (http://www.ontheissues.org/GA
/Sanford_Bishop.htm). Based on where your stand with abortion, you should be able
to understand my point of view. I believe this issue directly impacts the fetus because
they are painfully terminated and will never get a chance to experience life.
Black Cars Research Paper
Do Black Cars Get Hotter In The Summer?
Many people who live in or relocate to warmer climates have concerns regarding the
color of their vehicle. Owning a black car when you reside in a tropical or
subtropical climate could make you wonder if your vehicle is going to become too
hot during the summer. Most people have experienced the extreme discomfort of
getting into a car that is too hot. The stifling air and high heat can leave you breathless
and feeling sick.
The Science
Plainly stated, dark colors absorb heat while light colors reflect heat. Being specific,
the heat that we are referring to is the heat created by the rays of the sun.
Understanding this, it is not far fetched to assume that a black car is going to become
much hotter than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any dark colored vehicle is liable to become hot in the summer sun. How much hotter
is the question. Numerous studies and tests have been preformed, the results of each
will at the very least agree that the exterior of the vehicle becomes hotter than that of
a light colored vehicle. However, this exterior heat does not necessarily translate to a
heated interior environment.
Dark Vehicle Interiors
Just as with a dark exterior the vehicle will become hot, a car with a dark interior
will also absorb more heat. Most studies illustrate that a dark gray interior will
become hotter faster than a light tan interior, yet in the end both vehicles will end up
being the same temperature inside. In this case, it is not that the darker vehicle gets
hotter, it simply reaches a hot temperature more quickly.
Leather Seating and Components
Throwing many of the color theories out the window is the beloved leather interior
and upholstery feature. Leather, whether it is on your seats, dash, or steering wheel,
is going to become obscenely hot if allowed to sit uncovered in the summer sun. It
does not matter if the leather is tan, beige, gray, black, or purple polka dots. Thanks
to the natural fiber properties of this animal skin, your leather upholstery can become
hot enough to cause burns to the skin, even if it were
Margaret Steffler s A Complicated Kindness
Margaret Steffler s article, Fragments and Absences, states, Language in A
Complicated Kindness, constructed, responded to, and commented on by Nomi as
first person narrator, demonstrates a linguistic fragmentation comparable to the
material fragments surrounding the deserted daughter and sister (5). To understand
this comment further, we have to analyze A Complicated Kindness. In Miriam Toews
novel, we focus on the protagonists Naomi Nomi Nickel; she is a curious and
defiant sixteen year old who is developing in a kind of stunted world, or as she states
a non progressive community (11). Nomi is trying to find herself, and this brings her
into conflict with the community, and its authorities, especially her uncle Hans The

Her narration is filled with constant deviations, jumping around, and incomplete
endings; her inability to maintain focus, it seems, is stated at the very beginning of
the novel, Nomi has a problem with endings (1). So, instead of an ending, she
simply states a memory, or begins another story; we can see this in the spaces
between some paragraphs, the lines that indicate a beginning of a new fragment, or
simply a new chapter. Another example of her inability to conclude is the novels
ending, it seems like she is writing to her teacher her final assignment. In the
assignment she ends it by saying she will do things like leave and start a new life,
but in actuality she hasn t done anything she is still sitting in the empty house, so the
reader is left wondering, did Nomi really get out of the Mennonite community? The
ending in itself is not
The Role Of Suicides In The Virgin Suicides
The concepts of honour and loyalty appear to be intrinsically linked, packaged
together under the overarching category of general chivalry. However, a closer
look through the lens of Jeffrey Eugenides novel The Virgin Suicides reveals this
to be a misconception. One can exist without the other. In fact, none of the Lisbon
girls peers display both. Interactions with other girls are almost nonexistent within
the novel, and while the neighbourhood boys may be loyal, they are not
honourable. Furthermore, Trip Fontaine, who stands apart from the collective
conscience of the other boys, can be considered the opposite. By examining this
juxtaposition of vastly different approaches to interacting with the Lisbon girls,
the falsity of both methods can be revealed. Understanding this, further insight into
the four older girls enigmatic motivation for their suicides can be gained. To begin,
it is necessary to establish how the boys and Trip are able to act in a way which
affects the girls so severely. Maslow, a pioneer of humanistic psychology, argues
that one must satisfy their physical and emotional needs in a particular order, and
only those who reach the fifth and final tier will be ultimately happy (382). Dubbed
the love needs , the third tier can only be satisfied by the creation of strong friendly
or romantic bonds with others. Because the girls have been rejected by their own
community after their sister s suicide, and their own parents have shut the house in

Necrosis Syndrome Essay
Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Syndrome has been known to emanate in shrimp
since the year 2010.It is also sometimes referred to as Early Mortality Syndrome
(EMS), in which in an expansive term is used to describe different health problems of
shrimp which causes their early death (Nunan, Redman, Lightner, 2013). According
to Lightner (2013), EMS outbreaks typically occur within the first 30 days after
stocking a newly prepared shrimp pond, and mortality can exceed 70%. Furthermore,
it is caused by a bacterial agent, which is transmitted orally. Also, it colonizes the
shrimp s gastrointestinal tract and produces a toxin that causes the destruction of
tissue and dysfunction of the shrimp s digestive organ which is the
hepatopancreas. As stated by Lightners team, EMS does not affect human. Moreover,
they identified the EMS/AHPNS pathogen as a unique strain of relatively common

affected. Presence in Asia Pacific AHPNS has been officially reported in China and
Vietnam (2010), Malaysia (2011) and Thailand (2012).While it is apparent that the
spread of AHPNS throughout the region, it also suggests an infectious or at least
biological agent may be involved. So far, laboratory challenge tests have failed to
demonstrate that the disease is transmissible and no infectious agent or toxin has
been identified. Apart from that, the histopathology is a suggestive toxicity. Not to
mention, the testing of the feeds from affected farms and two crustaceacides
including cypermethrin have similarly failed to reproduce the disease. Moreover, the
disease is not related to any of the known shrimp pathogens like WSSV, YHV, IMNV,
and TSV. In conclusion, at this stage the cause is unknown, and the possibility of an
infectious agent and/or toxin cannot be discounted ( Lightner Flegel,
What Is The Criticism Of Fairy Tales
2. Literature review
2.1 Introduction
In modern literary criticism, fairy tales are not only considered as the stories for
children to learn morality or to explore the world of fantasy, but also a type of serious
literary text open to be interpreted from different perspectives. Among all modern
literary criticism, spatial theories lead critics to understand the relationships among
nature, individuals and society through a multi dimensional perspective. Therefore, to
conduct a spatial analysis of Oscar Wilde s fairy tales, this section will first introduce
an overview of Oscar Wilde and his works except for fairy tales, and previous
studies on his fairy tales from different literary perspectives, such as psychoanalysis,
gender analysis and ascetic analysis. Second, this section will introduce previous
studies on spatial theories employed in this thesis.

Linguistic scholars tend to conduct functional and pragmatic studies to interpret
Wilde s fairy tales. They find that the characters and story plot can be revealed
through transitivity processes, the mood and modality system and the thematic
structure. Also, there are scholars employing cooperative principle to analyze the
dialogues in Wilde s stories and find that the distribution of the turns and turn
taking strategies can be used to explain Wilde s characterization processes (Cai,
2012, p. 79). In addition, linguists also analyze the diction in Wilde s stories based
on corpus. For example, a scholar studies Wilde s nine fairy tales by analyzing the
type, degree and metaphors of the color words written by Wilde, and conclude how
the color related words contribute to the aestheticism of Wilde s fairy tales (Xu,

The Natural Process Of The Water Cycle
Our water is held through various reservoirs on earth, such as oceans, lakes, rivers,
etc. and has the ability to recycle itself. The natural process of the water cycle is
also known as the hydrologic cycle, which is the transference of water and how it
shifts from earth into the atmosphere and back. When the sun heats the surfaces that
maintain water, such as the oceans and plant life; it creates condensation and this
forms vapor in the air. This moisture filled air, then rises and forms clouds. The mix
between the water filled clouds and cooler air then forms the rain, ultimately recycling
water back to earth.
Carbon is an element that is present in both living and nonliving things. The carbon
cycle is the movement of the carbon between sources such as plants, animals, rocks
and water. This movement occurs when carbon is released into the atmosphere and is
stored in those things, living and nonliving. The recycling process begins when these
shifts occur.
Nitrogen is a nutrient found in all living things on earth. It can be in the form of a gas
or found in our soil and water sources. Like nitrogen, phosphorus serves as
nourishment found in soil and our water systems and any residue that may occur
from these sources. Both Nitrogen and phosphorus are reintroduced into the
ecosystem through decomposition and transfers back into the earth.
Biodiversity is the disturbance of the environment and this causes an imbalance in the
ecosystem. When we overuse our plant,

Hedonism Beliefs
Hedonism
Beliefs ( Hedonism )
Only pleasure has worth or value and only pain or displeasure has disvalue.
Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and
pleasure.
It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what
we shall do.
History
Hedonism is derived from the Greek hedone meaning simply pleasure . In common
language, Hedonism has come to mean devotion to pleasure as a way of life,
especially to the pleasures of the senses.(Moore)
The earliest example of Hedonism was the philosophy of the Cyrenaics, an early
Socratic school founded by Aristippus of Cyrene, in the 4th Century B.C. (although,
Democritus had an extremely similar philosophy even earlier). ( The Birth ).
During the Middle Ages, Christian philosophers largely discredited Hedonism,
because they didn t believe that it was consistent with the Christian emphasis on
avoiding sin. However, Renaissance philosophers such as Erasmus and Sir Thomas
revived Hedonism to some extent, defending it on the religious grounds that pleasure

For Epicurus, happiness was the complete absence of bodily and mental pains,
including fear of the Gods and desires for anything other than the bare necessities
of life. Even with only the limited excesses of ancient Greece on offer, Epicurus
advised his followers to avoid towns, and especially marketplaces, in order to limit
the resulting desires for unnecessary things. Once we experience unnecessary
pleasures, such as those from sex and rich food, we will then suffer from painful and
hard to satisfy desires for more and better of the same.
The Use of Distortion as a Literary Device in George...
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is an excellent example of distortion as a literary
device. The story is set up as a fable using a third person objective viewpoint and
personification of animals to represent historical figures and stereotypes. Distortion
can also be found in much of the symbolism throughout the novel. Similar to a
fable, Animal Farm makes use of personification. In the story, farm animals are used
to represent different classes of people, from the average working man to
government officials and police or military personnel. This element of the novel goes
deeper, when the pigs on the farm begin to resemble historical figures such as Joseph
Stalin and Leon Trotsky, of Russia. Through distortion of character, Orwell brings...

This brings the reader to the level of the working class animals and instills a sense
of uncertainty and disillusionment that is felt by most of the characters in the
story. In the beginning, the animals are excited by Major s talk of rebellion against
Mr. Jones and through Orwell s objective point of view, the same feeling of
insurrection is passed on to the audience. As the pigs weave an intricate web of lies
and scandal, the reader gets the sense that not all is well in the same way the animals
do. The difference between the animals and ourselves lies in intelligence. The author
deliberately makes the characters dumber than the average person, allowing us to see
through the deception of the pigs, without the use of a third person omniscient
viewpoint. Symbolically, Animal Farm itself is supposed to represent Russia and the
Soviet Union under Communist control. The farm in today s world, being a small,
self sustaining entity may relate to current conditions in North Korea. It seems that
Kim Jong il, like the pigs, is much more equal than his subjects. Kim and Napoleon
seem to share the paranoia of being attacked by more powerful rivals, and both it
seems, have a desire to keep their respective nations in the dark. Perhaps less
specifically, the farm could represent human society as a whole. As mentioned earlier,
the characters display an entire spectrum of human classes and stereotypical
personalities.

Theme Of Family Over Authority In Antigone
Family over Authority Conflict: a serious disagreement or argument, typically a
protracted one. Every person deals with conflict, whether it s large or small, internal
or external. In the ancient Greek set play, Antigone, the author Sophocles challenges
his characters to choose between family or authority. The author Sophoclesillustrates
the two concepts of family versus authority, while proving family ties to be more
important through the main character Antigone, the heroine of the story, as a symbol
for family. Creon, the antagonist, represents authority. Sophocles writes the play
out to uphold a theme of an authoritative king who only wants to abide by the laws,
no matter who it affects, only to show in the end, it is the king who loses.
Throughout the play symbols and character development are used to illustrate that
family is more important than authority. Sophocles symbolizes family over
authority by using Antigone and Creon to conflict each other s core beliefs,
showing that Antigone is willing to die to honor the love for her family, while
Creon is willing to kill to honor and enforce his own authority at any cost. As the
reader see in the story, when Antigone s brothers die, she chooses to bury Polyneices
even though she knows this will cost her her life. In the play when Antigone tells her
sister what she s going to do, Ismene tells her it s dangerous. Antigone responds,
Creon is not enough to stand in my way (Prologue. 15). This shows Antigone

  • 3. Louis XIV Essay Louis XIV (1638 1715) Although Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great, brought death and destruction through his wars, there are many positive aspects of his reign, such as the creation of Versailles and the building of France s national army. He did what had never been done before. He changed the lifestyle and the attitude of France by creating one of the most powerful monarchies ever to be built and at the same time, reassured all the nobility and other wealthy groups of their political and social standings. He made it clear that he was the final decision maker yet he still needed the help of the nobility and other authorities. In 1660, Louis married Marie Theresa of Austria, the daughter of the King of Spain, in order to keep peace between France and Spain. Louis childhood had come to an end and now it was time to take control. This was something that no one believed Louis XIV was capable of. Cardinal Marazin died on March 9, 1661. This was a turning point in Louis life. Louis announced that he was going to take on full responsibility for the ruling of the kingdom. This shows an example of how Louis did not follow tradition. This marked the end of the power of the French nobility. There was no longer going to be a chief minister. Louis wanted to deal with the nobles directly. He had a new way of dictatorship, which Louis claimed was by divine right. Louis XIV viewed himself as a representative of God and considered all rebellion and disobedience sinful. He believed that he had the right to dictate because he was put on Earth by God to rule. Another thing that Louis changed was the appearance and way of life of France. These great towns of France went under a sort of metamorphosis . The landscape was altered and monuments were built everywhere. Louis decided that he wanted to isolate the center of government from the city of Paris, so he constructed the palace of Versailles. It was an object of universal admiration and enhanced French prestige. It became Louis permanent address in 1682 and was also the home to thousands of the more important nobles, royal officials, and

  • 7. How Does Steinbeck A Sympathetic Character Steinbeck is sort of sympathetic towards his characters , but also very realistic. The end of this story really shows that realism by the writer giving the story a sad ending like most realistic stories should have. This really shows at the end when George is contemplating on killing Lennie. Steinbeck shows the real world of poverty, limited resources, limited social skills, and violence going along with the American dream, wealth, friendship, and loyalty. Steinbeck uses clear and simple language for the main part of the story. Some words in dialogues are dialect and abbreviated which sometimes makes it difficult to understand at first sight. Steinbeck emphasizes dreams and companionship throughout the book. George dreams about being
  • 8. William Hemingway s The Cafe After the older waiter turns off the light to the cafe and closes up, he then proceeds to carry the conversation with himself. This again, displays his loneliness. The text states, Turning off the electric light he continue the conversation with himself. It is the light of course but it is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant. You do not want music. Certainly you do not want music. Nor can you stand before a barwith dingily although hat is all that is provided for these hours (Hemingway, 382). He continues to convince himself that the cafe is needed for all the people who are lonely, like him, and the old man. However, it is time to close up and head home. Instead, he decides to go to a bodega. The text doesn t overtly state why he goes to the bodega, but you can infer that he is trying to understand the younger waiter. He knows that a bodega isn t like the cafe at all, but he is willing to give it a try. Besides, he doesn t want to go home to nothing. The text goes on to say the following, What did he fear? It was not fear or dread. It was a nothing that he knew too well. It was all a nothing and a man was nothing too. It was only that and light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order (Hemingway, 383). In order to cope with nothing, he too, needs to go to a cafe but none are open at this hour. He then goes on to say a prayer but replaces the lord, god, and religion for nothing or nada. For the older waiter, he doesn t find meaning in religion. It

While you there psychically, you were not there mentally or emotionally. I spent my entire life being my own cheerleader. You couldn t provide me with the type of support I needed. You never could and in the end, you never did. I spent my entire childhood being a mini adult. I spent it being a parentto myself, my siblings and to you; my own mother. I gave up on making friends because I felt it was selfish of me to do so when I was needed so badly at home. The times I did get the courage enough to make friends I would go to their houses and I would boil with envy and jealousy. Their parents while very loose with their rules and many of my friends being very unruly children. None the less they were still parents. I often at times felt as though you were my peer and not my mother. I often at times felt betrayed by you because you were supposed to care for me and instead I spend my days caring for you and looking after you and your broken hearts that the many men of your past left in a shatter pile.... These demons and monsters are merely human themselves, but they are so dark and twisted and hunger to hurt all things pure and innocent. Plucked from your womb with no knowledge of the dangers of this world, and thrown into the chaos of this world, I was the perfect prey. Small and on wobbly knees as a newborn foal I sought your arms. The respiratory systems main function is to give oxygen to the body s cells and get rid of the carbon dioxide the cells produce. Breathing would be impossible without the respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, voice box, windpipe, and lungs. In this essay I plan on explaining how the respiratory system functions as well as its parts. The exchange of two gases called oxygen and carbon dioxide, this process is called respiration. The book also states, The largest amount of air taken in one expiration is known as the vital capacity (VC). (Elsevier 2008). People that have diseases such as lung disease, emphysema, and heart problems have their tidal volume and vital capacity checked on a normal basis since conditions such as those can cause an abnormal amount of air going in and out of the lungs. When we use a lot of energy that requires us to use more oxygen since oxygen is what gives us the energy we need. The harder we work or run or do activities the more oxygen we need to intake to give to the millions of cells in the body. This is the reason when we run we breathe harder and deeper because our body is trying to keep up with us. When we breathe harder and faster our heart is also beating faster which is causing blood to pump more through the body each minute. Therefore the red blood cells make more trips and deliver more oxygen to the tissue cells also getting rid of more carbon dioxide than if we were doing nothing. Located in the medulla and pons of our brain is what is called the respiratory control center. In our book on page 382 it says, These centers are in turn regulated by a number of inputs from receptors located in varying areas of the body. These receptors can sense the need for changing the

One of the more serious issues that counselors are at higher risk to experience as job related stress increases is burnout. In order for counselors to maintain healthy levels of compassion while maintaining their ability to help their clients, implementing a self care plan. This self care plan enables counselors to effectively cope with frequent job related stress. If the self care plan does not effectively cope with this stress, then burnout is likely to be experienced. However, there are successful strategies to prevent burnout and enables the counselor to help hurting people for the long duration. One such plausible self care plan that effectively copes with job related stress includes frequent exposures to nature and the outdoors. In this paper, I examine the relationship between spending time in nature and its stress reducing capabilities. Because burnout is a stress induced syndrome, attempts to decrease stress levels with nature exposures, should also prevent burnout. Unfortunately, most counselors who experience burnout seldom engage in healthy coping strategies nor do they engage in them frequently enough. It is important for counselors to maintain healthy coping strategies in order to help their clients to the best of their abilities for the long duration. By

When they won they earned a $2 million. Even though this was a great accomplishment, in the 2014 Men s World Cup, Germany won and earned a whopping $35 million. This is a major pay gap between the men and women s soccer teams. I believe that women soccer players should be paid as much or more than their male counterparts. Many people believe that men and women soccer players are paid perfectly the way they are, but the way that the women are getting paid is an enormous issue in today s society. Millions of young girls dream to be like them one day. When these players come to town, the tickets sell out fast. For example, in Denver, the Women s National Team played a friendly against Japan, when the tickets went up for sale, they sold out in just ten minutes! This happens everywhere when the national team comes to town. This is raising lots of ticket sales for the Women s National Team, but the Women s National team isn t getting the money that they deserve. Another big example is that when the women played Japan, in 2015, in the World Cup championship, there were more than twenty five million people watching. This is the most views that any game in the English speaking language (men or women) has received. Even though they are selling more tickets and having more viewers, they are still not getting the money that they rightfully deserve. Even though they are bringing in more profit, they still aren t making the money that they should be getting. It is important for the Women s National Teams to stand up for what is right. They are being torn away from the money they deserve for nothing. Why is
  • 32. Martin Luther s Catholic Beliefs Martin Luther, a name that would be fairly familiar to most people, but why? Why do so many people know about him, and what did he actually do? Those are the topics that will be discovered, because he did many amazing things. He questioned the catholic beliefs, proved that we are saved by grace and not by works, and he also allowed the world to make religions of their choice instead of being forced to Catholicism. When talking about Luther s view on Catholicism, it is a very mixed topic. The reason for this includes that fact that he actually grew up a catholic, and then later in life became a catholic monk. So he initially devoted his life to being a catholic, but soon after doing that, he realized his full potential. Instead of just... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had studied the Bible, and knew that this was not an act that they were told to do. He knew that God would never want anyone to do what the Catholic Church asked people to do. They would sell holy relics that would symbolize Christ, or God, and people would be obliged to buy these so show their honor to God (historylearningsite.co.uk). The Catholic Church would also sell indulgences to people. These were the worst of all, because they literally did nothing other than give the church money. From how far the church strayed from what the Bible actually told the people to do, Martin saw the flaws and knew he had to change something. He made it his goal to expose what the church was doing, and tell the people how they were being manipulated. He proved that, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). Last of all, the biggest way that Luther affected the church, is the way he freed everyone from Catholicism. Luther did not say that Catholicism was evil, though he did enable it for others to study on their own, and he also made it so that they were not forced to be a Catholic, and they could be any religion that they chose. Now before Luther, pretty much everyone was forced to be a Catholic, so when the option of changing religions came up because of

Through the years in which Ireland had a famine, many people migrated over to the United States in order to have a better life and gain some prosperity. When they arrived they were met with less than open arms, but rather a whole new world of discrimination. I will be discussing the summary I have done on the discrimination of Irish in America today, followed by my reactions, two other Irish blooded reactions, the history, identities, and transitions, of these people of which I learned through doing this research. Not all the Irish drink and the stereotype is false in many cases pertaining to Irish Americans. Another value of the Irish is uncertainty avoidance, which concerns the degree to which people who feel threatened by ambiguous situations respond by avoiding them (Martin Nakayama, 2000, 70). This leads the Irish to prefer to reduce rules, accept dissent, and take risks (Martin Nakayama, 2000, 70). This can be supported by the massive immigration to the United States during the Potato Famine. Many Irish took to the seas during this period, and it was a great risk for so many to cross a sea and enter a world new to them, breaking away from the British power that controlled their lives. This emigration also demonstrates a sense of free will, which encompasses the need for change and to continue trying even if you fail. I noticed that the Irish are perceived as a group that works hard for what it wants and doesn t seem to give in to the norms of society. The new vision of Irish immigrants seems to be much healthier than that of previous generalizations. The action and doing value, which is entangled in the values, seems to be present in the lives of Irish immigrants, The young Irish coming over here today are much more sophisticated, more educated, and more ambitious (Krim Early, 1995, p.33). There is a definite sense of the contact hypothesis in the Santa Clara Valley, where cultures seem to

Hume was not only one of the first philosophers to write in English, but was also the first to really discuss that we cannot know most things with certainty. In this essay, Hume divides the knowledge that we can know with certainty and that which we cannot into two categories: relations of ideas, and matters of fact. He was born in1939 in West Bengal and just after the completion of his school studies, his family had to leave India for East Bengal to avoid any insidious after effect of the partition. Atin Bandyapadhaya and Sunanda Sikdar both left East Bengalfor West Bengalbut Ajizul Haque was one, who left West Bengal for East Bengal. Ordinarily, the critics tend to take it as altogether a feminist novel, but an in depth study may bring out the truth that it is a tale of metamorphosis or a total transformation of a humanself into a metaphorical phoenix, born out of the fire of riot. It s a tale of a woman, who struggles within and ultimately is purified. She becomes bold and decisive to denounce the so called geographical concepts of boundaries which break the human hearts and yield unimaginable destitution and suffering. It raises some basic questions of humanism and shows ways to bimukti (liberation) of the human soul from all conflicts and ignorance. Biblical Interpretation Of The Book Theophilus Scripture: Acts1:1 13 [Acts 1:1] In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach[Acts 1:2] until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. As we are heading toward Pentecost, let us look at the book of Acts deeply together. Who is Theophilus? People are interested in knowing who he is. In Luke, the writer referred to him as most excellent. When we look at this title, we can see that he must have been one with a high position in Rome. But in Acts, he is simply referred to in title as Theophilus. Luke was known as a doctor. But In those days, doctors did not hold positions of high status. The ones with high social positions would take the doctors around with them as their personal physicians. Luke must have been a doctor who was attached to someone s house. And so Luke must have evangelized Theophilus and changed him. Luke wanted to testify the faith of of apostle to him. Theophilus consists of two syllables in Greek, meaning Loving God. theos(God) + philein (love) : the one who loves God. The name of the person Luke evangelized holds the meaning of the one who loves God. Therefore, in his name lies the meaning, the one who loves God. It can therefore be said that underlying Acts is a dedication to the ones who love God. 1) you will receive baptism of the Holy Spirit. • 43. How Does Surface Mining Affect The Environment Lately, there has been a vast controversy over whether or not surface mining is helpful to the environment. Surface mining takes less labor while also yielding more coal. However, the destructiveness of it outweighs any possible benefits. The infrastructure and different types of pollution associated with the mining phase disturbs the ecosystems by causing problems with wildlife, water, and even people s homes. In order for there to be a difference in how the surface miningof coalaffects the environment, there needs to be some sort of action taken which is to have stricter controls over mining companies such as the Vulcan Materials Company. To begin with, Vulcan s use of surface mining endangers the environment as a whole as it leaves behind sundry negative effects. Per ton of coal, around twenty five tons of overburden is excavated ( Surface Mining ). To remove overburden, one must blast through the hard cap rock which, in turn, leaves the landscape withering. Normal organic matter is prevented from getting into the soil causing a loss in vegetation and a displacement of wildlife. The lack of vegetation also increases the rate of erosion. Mining generally encompasses spoil banks, which are long rows of coalesced soil and rock, and ultimately blocks any outflow. These banks are usually left abandoned; yet, the efforts being made to reclaim them may only result in an erosion of the soil worsening. Along with these deleterious outcomes, there also comes the pollutionof

Therefore, I m not completely fighting against abortion but rather the pro life versus pro choice aspect of it. Although I m pro life, certain situations are necessary to get an abortionlike rape, hazard to health of the mother or child and incest. Here in Georgia, the polls show that forty three percent of voters are pro life and the other fifty seven percent were pro choice because abortion is taken lightly across the nation. However, this exterior heat does not necessarily translate to a heated interior environment. Dark Vehicle Interiors Just as with a dark exterior the vehicle will become hot, a car with a dark interior will also absorb more heat. However, a closer look through the lens of Jeffrey Eugenides novel The Virgin Suicides reveals this to be a misconception. One can exist without the other. In fact, none of the Lisbon girls peers display both. Interactions with other girls are almost nonexistent within the novel, and while the neighbourhood boys may be loyal, they are not honourable. Furthermore, Trip Fontaine, who stands apart from the collective conscience of the other boys, can be considered the opposite. By examining this juxtaposition of vastly different approaches to interacting with the Lisbon girls, the falsity of both methods can be revealed. Understanding this, further insight into the four older girls enigmatic motivation for their suicides can be gained. To begin, it is necessary to establish how the boys and Trip are able to act in a way which affects the girls so severely. Maslow, a pioneer of humanistic psychology, argues that one must satisfy their physical and emotional needs in a particular order, and only those who reach the fifth and final tier will be ultimately happy (382). Dubbed the love needs , the third tier can only be satisfied by the creation of strong friendly or romantic bonds with others. Also, there are scholars employing cooperative principle to analyze the dialogues in Wilde s stories and find that the distribution of the turns and turn taking strategies can be used to explain Wilde s characterization processes (Cai, 2012, p. 79). In addition, linguists also analyze the diction in Wilde s stories based on corpus. For example, a scholar studies Wilde s nine fairy tales by analyzing the type, degree and metaphors of the color words written by Wilde, and conclude how the color related words contribute to the aestheticism of Wilde s fairy tales (Xu, 2009, p.
  • 53. The Natural Process Of The Water Cycle Our water is held through various reservoirs on earth, such as oceans, lakes, rivers, etc. and has the ability to recycle itself. The natural process of the water cycle is also known as the hydrologic cycle, which is the transference of water and how it shifts from earth into the atmosphere and back. When the sun heats the surfaces that maintain water, such as the oceans and plant life; it creates condensation and this forms vapor in the air. This moisture filled air, then rises and forms clouds. The mix between the water filled clouds and cooler air then forms the rain, ultimately recycling water back to earth. Carbon is an element that is present in both living and nonliving things. The carbon cycle is the movement of the carbon between sources such as plants, animals, rocks and water. This movement occurs when carbon is released into the atmosphere and is stored in those things, living and nonliving. The recycling process begins when these shifts occur. Nitrogen is a nutrient found in all living things on earth. It can be in the form of a gas or found in our soil and water sources. Like nitrogen, phosphorus serves as nourishment found in soil and our water systems and any residue that may occur from these sources. Both Nitrogen and phosphorus are reintroduced into the ecosystem through decomposition and transfers back into the earth. Biodiversity is the disturbance of the environment and this causes an imbalance in the ecosystem. When we overuse our plant,

Shortly after becoming CEO, Brennahan conducted a search for a CFO using a respected recruiting firm. Because Brennahan planned to continue to grow the company, he wanted a top notch CFO with skills beyond what Hollate might need at present. In particular, he wanted someone with significant public company experience, something the other members of the top team lacked. Brennahan reflected that if he was applying for the CFO position today, he might not make the cut. In the end, Brennahan hired William Blackburt. Before coming to Hollate, Blackburt had served as CFO of a manufacturer that had grown through acquisitions, Hollate Manufacturing Case Study1but had reached the limits of its growth some years earlier. Because of this, he was looking for a new opportunity. Overall, Blackburt had 25 years of experience after earning his MBA and he was also a CPA. A former colleague called him extremely intelligent and hardworking someone who was the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave at the end of the day. The colleague also noted that Blackburt had nerves of steel and kept his cool under the most pressure filled circumstances. Blackburt believed that Hollate would not find many candidates with his level of experience directly aligned with the company s needs. When he was offered the job, he negotiated hard for a compensation package that included significant bonus opportunities. In particular, his bonus levels were

Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do. History Hedonism is derived from the Greek hedone meaning simply pleasure . In common language, Hedonism has come to mean devotion to pleasure as a way of life, especially to the pleasures of the senses.(Moore) The earliest example of Hedonism was the philosophy of the Cyrenaics, an early Socratic school founded by Aristippus of Cyrene, in the 4th Century B.C. (although, Democritus had an extremely similar philosophy even earlier). ( The Birth ). During the Middle Ages, Christian philosophers largely discredited Hedonism, because they didn t believe that it was consistent with the Christian emphasis on avoiding sin. However, Renaissance philosophers such as Erasmus and Sir Thomas revived Hedonism to some extent, defending it on the religious grounds that pleasure was in fact compatible with ... For Epicurus, happiness was the complete absence of bodily and mental pains, including fear of the Gods and desires for anything other than the bare necessities of life. Even with only the limited excesses of ancient Greece on offer, Epicurus advised his followers to avoid towns, and especially marketplaces, in order to limit the resulting desires for unnecessary things. Once we experience unnecessary pleasures, such as those from sex and rich food, we will then suffer from painful and hard to satisfy desires for more and better of the same.
  • 56. The Use of Distortion as a Literary Device in George... Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is an excellent example of distortion as a literary device. The story is set up as a fable using a third person objective viewpoint and personification of animals to represent historical figures and stereotypes. Distortion can also be found in much of the symbolism throughout the novel. Similar to a fable, Animal Farm makes use of personification. In the story, farm animals are used to represent different classes of people, from the average working man to government officials and police or military personnel. This element of the novel goes deeper, when the pigs on the farm begin to resemble historical figures such as Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, of Russia. Through distortion of character, Orwell brings... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This brings the reader to the level of the working class animals and instills a sense of uncertainty and disillusionment that is felt by most of the characters in the story. In the beginning, the animals are excited by Major s talk of rebellion against Mr. Jones and through Orwell s objective point of view, the same feeling of insurrection is passed on to the audience. As the pigs weave an intricate web of lies and scandal, the reader gets the sense that not all is well in the same way the animals do. The difference between the animals and ourselves lies in intelligence. The author deliberately makes the characters dumber than the average person, allowing us to see through the deception of the pigs, without the use of a third person omniscient viewpoint. Symbolically, Animal Farm itself is supposed to represent Russia and the Soviet Union under Communist control. The farm in today s world, being a small, self sustaining entity may relate to current conditions in North Korea. It seems that Kim Jong il, like the pigs, is much more equal than his subjects. Kim and Napoleon seem to share the paranoia of being attacked by more powerful rivals, and both it seems, have a desire to keep their respective nations in the dark. Perhaps less specifically, the farm could represent human society as a whole. As mentioned earlier, the characters display an entire spectrum of human classes and stereotypical personalities. The way the pigs altered the seven commandments
  • 57. Theme Of Family Over Authority In Antigone Family over Authority Conflict: a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one. Every person deals with conflict, whether it s large or small, internal or external. In the ancient Greek set play, Antigone, the author Sophocles challenges his characters to choose between family or authority. The author Sophoclesillustrates the two concepts of family versus authority, while proving family ties to be more important through the main character Antigone, the heroine of the story, as a symbol for family. Creon, the antagonist, represents authority. Sophocles writes the play out to uphold a theme of an authoritative king who only wants to abide by the laws, no matter who it affects, only to show in the end, it is the king who loses. Throughout the play symbols and character development are used to illustrate that family is more important than authority. Sophocles symbolizes family over authority by using Antigone and Creon to conflict each other s core beliefs, showing that Antigone is willing to die to honor the love for her family, while Creon is willing to kill to honor and enforce his own authority at any cost. As the reader see in the story, when Antigone s brothers die, she chooses to bury Polyneices even though she knows this will cost her her life. In the play when Antigone tells her sister what she s going to do, Ismene tells her it s dangerous. Antigone responds, Creon is not enough to stand in my way (Prologue. 15). This shows Antigone represents
