2. Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by the development of
hypertension and proteinuria in the second half of pregnancy. There is currently no
definitive cause, however, it is thought to result from disturbed development of the
placenta, leading to endothelial dysfunction and systemic inflammation.
Syncytiotrophoblast extracellular vesicles (STBEVs) are produced when the
syncytial placental surface is shed into the maternal circulation. We hypothesized that
this would cause vascular endothelial cell dysfunction via activation of the multi
ligand lectin like oxidized low density lipoprotein scavenger receptor (LOX 1). This
could then initiate a cascade of events. One of the effects of LOX 1 activation is the
production of reactive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
14 The main ligand for the LOX 1 receptor is oxidized low density lipoproteins (ox
LDLs), however, it is also able to bind bacteria, activated platelets, and apoptotic
cells. 14 Ox LDLs accumulate in plaques present on the walls of vascular tissue
and have been thought to disturb endothelial and vascular function via LOX 1
activation. 15 Activation of the LOX 1 receptor is known to upregulate NADPH
oxidase subunits, leading to the subsequent production of reactive oxygen species
(ROS).16 18 These ROS, specifically superoxide (O2 ), produced from activation of
LOX 1 continue to cause damage particularly in energy producing organelles like
the mitochondria.19 Damage to the mitochondria can cause endothelial
dysfunction, which leads to degradation via apoptosis and autophagy, as well as
thrombosis and smooth muscle cell proliferation.20 Interestingly, the LOX 1
receptor has been suggested to play a role in PE. Research by Zhang et al. (2015)
and Sankaralingam et al. (2008) has demonstrated that LOX 1 expression is
significantly increased both in the placenta, as well as the vasculature in PE patients.
The exact mechanism is unclear; however, oxidative stress (possibly resulting from
the circulating factors released during PE) has been shown to increase LOX 1
expression on
3. Member of the Wedding by Carson Mccullers
Without connection to others there is no me
Throughout our lives, everyone that we share bonds with and interact with on a
regular basis, either forms or has some sort of influence on our identity. Consequently,
the majority of us naturally find ourselves striving to fit in with these people,
especially during the tough transition from childhood to adulthood. It is this part of
the human condition that makes us feel as though we must forge ties with something
outside of ourselves in order to establish a strong sense of existence and a clear
understanding of who we are. Although most individuals are able to make these
connections with others naturally, others who stray from the social norm might not
be so fortunate, but rather than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But still, she didn t let anyone s disapproval of her identity deter her, and continued to
carry the burden of being alienated in order to remain true to herself. By expressing
her homosexuality with self assurance, others were eventually forced to accept
Ruby for who she was, and she has since gone on to be extremely successful in life,
having been selected to act in a number of films including the Australian comedy
Suite for Fleur , designing her own fashion range, and much more. In 2008 and 2009,
she was also chosen as one of the 25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians by
Same Same , an Australian online gay and lesbian community. This indicates that true
existence can only be found when our decisions and actions are truly our own; when
we stand alone and free of connections, without social influence.
Considering a different perspective, it can be argued that both sides of the argument
are true to a certain extent, in that we are able to possess a sense of existence whilst
devoid of most connections, but there are some affiliations such as the bonds we
share with our family that we cannot live without. A sense of acceptance from our
familial ties and intimate relationships with others shape who we are. These
connections ideally provide love, protection, security and the opportunity to discover
our values, attitudes, and beliefs that help to define us from the time of our birth. In

4. Power In Joseph Heller s Novel
Voltaire states that it is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong, But
why? Government leaders usually have some form of power, and more often than
not, persons with authority can quickly become power hungry. This is a theme
displayed throughout Joseph Heller s novel . Most of the military officers
introduced in the novel are greedy, blindly selfish, and more often than not, put
others in danger, only to benefit themselves. Heller s novel isn t the first time the
issue of authorities and power has been mentioned. Throughout history, there has
been some form of authority, and there have been people who question it. One of the
most well known examples of this is Galileo Galilei. He believed the Earth was
round, and not flat unlike... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cathcart enjoys ordering the men around, while also trying to maintain his status,
he extends the number of missions the men must complete. He did all of this for
the reason that he was power hungry and ...he wanted to be a general so badly he
was willing to try everything.. (189). The Colonel was looking for power, when he
sent his soldiers on missions that proved to be dangerous and pointless, just to
impress his superiors. When Yossarian questions Cathcart on the topic of one of their
missions, Yossarian s squad members become worried, believing that he may be
punished for questioning the Colonel. In reply, Cathcart makes a rule stating, only
soldiers without questions can ask questions (30). Though when the men begin to
question him, accordingly plotting to kill him, he proceeds to send them on many
more useless missions, each one more dangerous than the last. He does this to teach
the men a lesson; to keep their mouth shut, or they will pay the price. Cathcart
symbolizes Heller s view the American bureaucracy also demonstrating how
Americans allow the bureaucracy to do what the people cannot stop them from
doing. Cathcart is a dangerous power hungry man who will stop at nothing to achieve
what he wants, and if a soldier questions him, he will stop at nothing to silence
5. Essay about Egt1 Task 1
Marginal Analysis
Economics amp; Global Business Applications, EGT 1, Task 1
A. Explanation of profit maximization
The total revenue, TR, is the overall amount of all sources of a business s income.
It consists of total sales or profit, over a period of time. The TR can be calculated by
taking the price and multiplying it by the quantity. For example, if a business decides
to retail another product and the total revenue does increase, thus the marginal
revenue would be greater than zero. However, if the business decides to sell another
product and the marginal revenue is zero, then there would not be any changes to the
total revenue.
To determine profit maximization, using the Total Revenue to Total Costapproach,
consider the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This increase in widgets will provide Company A with a MR of $140 dollars per
widget. In addition, applying the same formula to the maximum of 15 widgets
produced ($1200 150/15) also results in a MR of $70 per widget. In the provided
scenario, Company A has experienced decreasing MR for every one more widget
they produce.
C. Calculation used to determine Marginal Cost
In comparison, the marginal cost is the added cost of producing one more unit of
output. It is determined by the change in total cost (TC) divided by the change in
output (Q). MC= TC/Q. In the provided scenario, for Company A to produce one
widget TC=$30, to produce two widgets TC=$50 thus the marginal cost was $20;
furthermore the cost per widget to produce was $25. Marginal cost will continue
to decrease for Company A until they reach their profit maximization of $42.86 per
widget at 7 widgets. Marginal cost will then begin to decrease for every additional
widget produced until the end result of 15 widgets with a MC that exceeds $80, also
allowing TC to topple to TR ($1220/15=$81.33).
D. Company A profit maximization Quantity| Total Revenue| Total Cost| 7| $840|

Company A reaches its greatest profit maximization with a Quantity of 8 because the
total revenue is at the greatest distance from total cost. (TFC+TVC=TC); Price x

The communication between these two stages will be still stayed formal as managers
accept more power with key choice. The third phase; delegation will occur when more
responsibility is given to managers and employees to accomplish organizational goals
and their work (Weiss, 2.2). In this phase the bonuses and profit centers are created
and managers stop micro managing and will move into larger market faster and begin
to innovate. Fourth phase is coordination, the organization can accomplish growth
with this phase is by utilizing the formal system to increase more prominent
coordination through more proficient distribution of the corporate and nearby assets.
A greater amount of staff parts are enlisted in this stage which will give more
representatives to work and have better administration given to the clients. This will

is the fifth phase; collaboration. In this stage, development happens and initiative is

9. Short Essay On Jimmy Hoffa
Jimmy Hoffa was a character of a man, and a smart one at that. A pioneer in the
labor union community, Hoffa controversially climbed up the Teamsters union
chain of command. On his way up though, Hoffa made many enemies in the
business of organized crime. His aggressively sly behavior earned him as much
respect as it did threats, and his work made him more successful than he could have
ever imagined. In all of his glory, Hoffa vanished like it did. There is no doubt that
Hoffa is gone, but the question is, was it by choice or by murder?
James Riddle Hoffa was born on february 14th, 1913 in Brazil, Indiana. He dropped
out of school at a young age to work and help support his family. Working for a
local loading dock in Detroit, hoffa got to see poor labor conditions first hand. He
organized his first strike shortly after. Using fresh strawberries as a bargaining tool,
he landed better contracts for the other workers and himself. In the 1930s after
joining the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Hoffa became a labor organizer
for the teamsters union. He also married Josephine Poszywak in 1936, with whom he
had two children. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and conspiracy in 1967. For three years, Hoffa continuously tried to appeal his many
convictions but was unsuccessful. In 1971, president Richard Nixon commuted his
sentence, but banned Hoffa from holding a leadership position in the teamsters union
for nine years. He fought against the ban in court, and off the record, to try and get
his power back within the
10. Taking a Look into Food Photography
Food photography is a huge part of our society today. Food Photography is an
important element to creating an impact. Consumers react first through sight, and
then are prompted to behave in a particular way in response to how they feel about
what they see. A well laid out design with beautiful color selection and appropriate
typographic treatments will certainly grab the attention of a consumer. But a
perfectly executed, well shot photograph is more likely to make them react.
There are many factors that influence food photography. Food photography started in
the 1600s as a painting, and the paintings looked as if they were taken from far
away. The food they used for the art was artificially doctored up. For example ice
cream was substituted with mash potatoes and paper mache mock ups were
sometimes used instead of real poultry. These substitutions were a result of hot
studio lamps, but as cameras and film speed and sensitivity improved, more
genuine food products were introduced. But when people found out, it gave the
profession a horrible name. Because of the technical aspects of the food
photography of this period, it was not taken seriously as an art. In the 1800s when
the camera was introduced, it changed the way food photographs were taken. The
first still life was a view from the window, by Nicephore Niepce in 1827. Due to the
eight hour exposure time that it took to take the picture, the buildings were
illuminated from both sides by the sun.

Children thrive in predictable and consistent environments that allow children to
feel safe and secure. Children require and parents have an obligation to provide
children with the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Children need to

with experiencing a childhood that is free from abuse and neglect. The reality is
that not every child is provided with an environment that fosters a child s needs,
parents are not always able to meet the basic needs of a child, and the childhoods of
approximately 742,000 children were not free from abuse and neglect in 2011 (U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). The social workprofession is filled
with numerous areas of practice that include areas such as gerontological social
work, military social work, and child welfare services which is the second largest
area of social work and an area that many consider to be a highly rewarding yet a
heart wrenching practice area. Child welfare services is a social work practice
area that will service some of society s most vulnerable and oppressed children and
families. A child that is in need of child welfare services has most likely
experienced a form of child abuse, neglect, or trauma that will impact their mental
health, behavior, and ability to trust. Child welfare social workers will work with
families from all walks of life some families that are in crisis, living in poverty,

UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY STEREOTYPING AND POPULAR
MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DISABILITY.
Having a physical disability is a stigmatised attribute that is usually associated with
stereotypes of incompetence. As a result of these stereotypes, individuals often
experience economic and medical disadvantages(Roeher Institute,1996). People with
disability are less likely to hold a job because employers tend to judge these
individuals by their perceived limitations, rather than their actual abilities and
potential.
Evidently, the first thing that comes to mind when disability is mentioned is a
wheelchair because of the symbol that is used to represent it. Yet only 5% of
disabled people do actually use wheelchairs.
Under the Equality Act 2010 (Great Britain). A person is considered to be disable if
they have a physical impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect
on their ability to perform normal day to day activities. Disability can be classified
into two types: Physical impairment and Mental impairments .
Physical impairments include anything from loss of a limb, sensory
impairment(paralysis), blindness, deafness and generally everything that alters
physical appearance and performance of an individual.
Mental impairments include learning disabilities such as Down syndrome,
Developmental disorders such as Autism, Asperger, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia. Also

16. Symbolism In The Invisible Man
1. The chief difference between Wyeth s painting and Wall s photography is that the
former acts as a complement to aid the readers understanding of the general story,
while the latter acts as that of the protagonists life, in the point of view of the
protagonist (in this case,) himself. As the text says, the former, though more popular
than the text itself, becomes less meaningful without the original documents, because
the synthesis of the Literature and the illustration is what provides the readers with
the full experience of the book to imagine and be entertained by a story that does not
usually happen (393). To go further, the reader cannot live in it; the reader can only
use it as to help one s imagination/experience of the said fiction... Show more content

I generally agree with the comments of the MoMA s critique that Wall opened an
entirely new way of illustration, in that Wall s approach was so inviting to the
audience. The focal point of the picture is to the protagonist of the novel, the
Invisible Man , and such emphasis does draw some eyes to the protagonist. However,
at the same time, the whole picture is overwhelmed by the number of the lightbulbs
above the man. Though everything is in real life sizes, the amount of the lightbulbs
acts as a hyperbole, as the text suggests (394). Such override of the focus provides the
audiences with more depth of cognition of the situation, and many times, it is not
frequently possible in two dimensional settings, such as (comparatively) plain
illustrations like those of Wyeth. In that sense, I think Wall s photographyhas opened
a new way of the illustration. However, at the same time, I think his brilliancy is
solely due to his use of the medium of photography. In other words, I think his only
contribution to the illustration industry is the use of the film, which conveys
different sets of images and cognition. Films could always do that, and perhaps
thousands of the photographers have used such techniques in their work; there is
nothing new about the technique itself. So the only difference Wall made was his
synthesis of the film and the Literature to illustrate that specific

though, clearly unopposed, seeing as it is still in use throughout the world today (

Marconi was easily able to win over Tesla, but Tesla still had his part to play (

Century
The Economic History of Pittsburgh
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Pittsburgh became a leader in America s
industrial production. This industrial production dominated Pittsburgh s economy for
over a century. This attracted many foreigners to Pittsburgh which had a demand for
unskilled workers. However, Pittsburgh eventually lost its position as one of the
world s largest industrial producers and became a rising city for businesses in the

Foreign producers of steel began to use an underhanded industry tactic known as
dumping . According to Dale Hathaway who wrote, Can Workers Have a Voice??
The Politics of Deindustrialization in Pittsburgh, dumping is the sale of foreign goods
within the United Stats at prices below the cost of production. As a result, the price of
domestically produced steel far surpassed foreign produced steel and American
industries turned to foreign sources for steel. Other factors that caused Pittsburgh to
lose its domination of the steel industry were the rising cost of U.S. labor, the
industries failure to modernize Pittsburgh s steel making process due to the high costs
of such implementation and finally, the escalating of steel substitutes such as plastic
and fiberglass. Together these factors led to the destruction of the steel industry in
Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.
In the 1980?s, Pittsburgh s post industrial era began. Many of Pittsburgh s
manufacturing plants went out of business or left the area. The greatest losses were
in the steel industry. Because the steel industry employed masses of people, the
dissolution of the industry caused many people to find themselves unemployed.
Between 1978 and 1983, 100,000 steel and steel related jobs were eliminated. By
the mid 1990?s, the world s greatest steel producer would be reduced to one single

On April 9, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the vulnerable country of Norway. The
people of Norway tried to fight the attack of their beloved country but could no
organize a military resistance fast enough because of their king fleeing. Since they
were unable to repel the Nazi armies, the Norwegian citizens began to thwart the
Germans in other ways. In the book Shadow on the Mountain, the experiences and
struggles of Espen are based on those Erling Storrusten. As a young teenager,
Erling becomes a vital part of the XU during World War ll. Living in the fictional
village of Lilleby Espen lives with his parents and his younger sister, Ingrid.
Although the Germans act friendly at first, Espen felt anger as his DAILY life

The Creation of a Social Problem: The Polarization of Homosexuals and the
Restriction of Their Rights The discussion of homosexuality as a social problem has
become one that holds great and varying opinions among homosexuals and
heterosexuals alike. These discussions most prominently cover the rights they are or
are not afforded, and in that context the discriminations that are placed against them. I
am choosing to cover this topic to show how homosexualityhas been made into a
socially constructed problem, and the steps that can, and should, be taken in order to
eliminate the labeling of homosexuality as a problem, and the stigmas that come with
that labeling. These steps to a solution include changes in the personal mindset,

In a book written on gay rights in 2014, Walter Frank notes that a majority of the
nation now supports gay rights, and they do not find homosexuality as being a moral
problem (Frank 2014). This doesn t mean however, that support for homosexuals is a
new thing. In an article about a homosexual student club that was formed on a
university campus in Maine, and the state wide gay conference they wanted to hold
on campus, it was found that supporters of the club and their conference (which
garnered much controversy) were either homosexual themselves, or were people who
were sympathetic to homosexuals and held a belief that people have a right to self
fulfillment (Cohn 1984). This support that also comes from non homosexuals is
important in making a change. And while now a majority of the population supports
gay rights and holds non judgmental feelings towards them, there still hasn t been a
significant change to the treatment and rights of homosexuals until the Supreme
Court decision in 2015 to give the right to same sex marriage in all states. This
decision was a significant accomplishment, but there is still much opposition to it,
usually on the grounds of homosexuality being a deviant

Irish Music is Fighting Strong in the 21st Century A young American man walks
down a busy city street whistling Loch Loman, while a Japanese woman on the
other side of the globe is humming to Enya s Caribbean Blue (). Irish music has
made a far reaching impact in the world of today. It reaches people all over the
globe from those locally born to those of no Irish ancestry whatsoever. It has
bespoken of culture and the proud heritage of the Irish. Song in and of itself is a
force to be reckoned with, but the Irish musichas instilled a sense of connection to a
country and a people few may otherwise identify themselves with. Irish music is the
national photobook of its people, touching a deep chord with so many of its listeners.

Some of the Irish tunes, though perhaps honestly expressive of the flawed human
heart, may stray a little far. Since a common theme in traditional Irish music (and
arguably, most genres of music) is romantic interest, it is not uncommon to hear
infidelity eluded to or spoken of directly in a ballad like Ride On (Celtic Women
Destiny ). In a version sung by the music group Celtic Women, the down trodden
melody mentions a suggestive line at least once in the course of its lyrics (Celtic
Woman Destiny ). People s objections to this is are understandable and perfectly
legitimate. However, one could argue that this music can still be enjoyed, it just
requires discretion. Due to the many depressing topics featured in Irish music,
people may be less inclined to absorb the sense of emanating sadness which the
songs convey. It is true that many Irish melodies seem to be a bit dark or sad, in
part to their slower, more dramatic pace. There are, however, pieces of Irish music
which many times employ the use of the fiddle. There is also always the potential that
audiences may just have other musical tastes, which could be summed up in One man

25. Grieving for Children and Adults
Grief can t be shared. Everyone carries it alone. His own burden in his own way
(Lindbergh). Grieving the loss of a loved one can be the most emotionally
draining time of any human being s life. Not only is this a time for saying good
bye to the ones we hold dear in our hearts, but it is also a time for change, change
that is not seen as pleasant or embraced. This change is continuing on in life without
the ones we have lost. For the majority, this experience is difficult but most have the
support and love of family to make it through, but for others, this can be a lonesome
and maybe even an impossible task. This experience will affect a person both
emotionally and physically, but it is important to learn how to cope with the pain,...

But if a child does wish to participate, it is helpful to them in getting closure. During
grieving children will feel the same pain, confusion, and fear just as any adult will.
Family and those that are close to the deceased are not the only ones who feel
anguish. They aid in grief counseling and handling the departed. Funeral directors
may help a family deal with a loss through grief counseling themselves or refer
families to a grief therapist. Either way, a huge part of a funeral director s job is to
show compassion and empathy towards families during this difficult time. It is a
fine line when dealing with emotions while being a mortician or a funeral director.
They have to show sympathy and support to the family, but they cannot let their
emotions get in the way of their work because they still have a job to do. Morticians
or embalmers might not deal with loved ones of the deceased directly, but they also
are affected. Witnessing tragedy after tragedy and attending countless funerals can
take a toll on any mortician s mental and emotional health. A mortician s degree of
sympathy may also vary depending on the circumstances of the death. Andrew
Weeks, a director of his own funeral says I hate senseless death. Old people are
expected to die, children are not (Weeks). While death is upsetting in any situation, a
mortician might feel more saddened by the death of a younger person, such as a

In the past days as the weather has improved, I have noticed a plethora of girls being

stereotypes and negative ideas, and dresscode almost never affects guys I believe our

This is the kind of thinking that leads to slut shaming girls, oppressive gender

What are we telling our youth by treating girls based off their sexual value from a
young age?
Despite all the issues with the female dress code I have never once seen a boy
prosecuted for his clothing. I have seen boys with surfer tank tops on that are far less

anything underneath, and I have seen boys with sagging pants so low you can see
their underwear and despite that being a strict no no in the handbook they are not

27. Social Commentary In Pride And Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice In Pride and Prejudice Austen offers up commentary on a
variety of themes prejudice, family, marriage, class, and so on. Of all the themes,
perhaps none is better developed than that of Pride. Pride and Prejudice is
regarded as a brilliant piece of social commentary, offering a vivid peek into the
British Regency life in 1813. The social milieu of Austen s Regency England was
particularly stratified, and class divisions were rooted in family connections and
wealth. In her work, Austen is often critical of the assumptions, pride, and
prejudices of upper class England. Austen often satirizes England s prideful
individuals; the England she depicts is one in which social mobility is limited, and
class consciousness and pride are relatively strong. It seems that pride is what
hinders the characters from revealing their potentially best nature. Firstly, pride is a
constant presence in characters attitudes and treatment of each other, colouring their
judgments and leading them to make rather foolish mistakes, especially in the case
of Darcy and Elizabeth. The novel, Pride and Prejudice, implies that no one is ever
completely free of pride. In fact, it is pride what prevents Elizabeth and Darcy from
revealing their true feelings about each other. Austen s plot often features characters
forging their respective ways through an established and rigid social hierarchy.
Darcy and Elizabeth s love is shaped and hindered by pride, and therefore they must
elude and
28. Essay about 12 Angry Men Literary Analysis
Don t Believe Everything You Hear 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose is a twisting
story where a son is accussed of stabbing his father to death. Twelve strangers are
told to listen to this court case and are then stuck in a small, hot room where they
are told to decide on a verdict, whether or not the kid lives or dies. The jury finally
decides on the verdict of : Not Guilty. Three major facts that influence the juries
agreement that the accussed is not guilty include doubts of the murder weapon,
doubts of the old man s testimony, and doubts of the lady across the street s
testimony. The first major fact that influences the juries agreement that the accussed
is not guilty is the doubts of a key piece of evidence; the murder weapon, a switch...

This is very significant in swaying the jurors vote to not guilty because with the old
man having had a stroke and using two canes, the jurors prove that the old man
lied about how long it took for him to get to the door. This situation persuades the
jurors decision even more because now they know that the old man lied and just
assumed he saw the accussed young man, but could have been anyone. The last
major fact that influences the juries agreement that the accused is not guilty are
doubts of another witness s testimony; the lady across the street who supposedly
saw the accused young man stab his father. The jurors started talking about
needing glasses to read the clock when Juror 8 realizes that the lady used very
strong glasses and it is not possible that she could have had time to put them on and
see the young man clearly stab his father. Juror 8 says, She testified that the murder
took place the instant she looked out and that the lights went off a split second
later. She couldn t have had time to put on her glasses then. Now perhaps this
woman honestly thought thought she saw the boy kill his father. I say she only
saw a blur (587). This is very significant in swaying the jurors vote even more
because with the lady seeing the murder right when she looks out the window while
in bed, she likely does not wear her glasses to bed. And this persuades the jurors even
more because now they know that

1.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE
Financial sectors all over the world is going through the process of transformation
such as, liberalization, technological innovations and deregulation. The evolving
financial system in India has been interlinked with the growth of the macro
economics. This change allows financial institutions to bring in assortment of new
product and services into the economy. Financial institutions play a prominent role in
stimulating the economic growth in a country, they help to mobilize the savings and
channelize the funds as investments into the sectors which requires it. Government
has played a prominent role in creation and structuring the financial system in the
country. The government also controls and influences the flow of credit in an
economy and its direction through its fiscal policies.
Since the liberalization, privatization and globalization (L.P.G) in the early 1990 s
the Indian economy has had a deep impact on its financial services sector, it is during
this L.P.G era the reform s in financial sector were initiated by the government of

31. The Consequences Of Malabsorption Syndrome In...
Research Question: The Consequences of Malabsorption Syndrome in Post Operative
Gastric Bypass Patients
Rationale: Gastric bypass operative procedures are a group of techniques that divides
the stomach into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower pouch, then rearranges
the small intestine so that it connects with both. There are a number of techniques to
reconnect the intestine, but all lead to a considerable reduction in the volume of the
stomach, also accompanied by an altered physiological response to food. Despite
media advertising, these procedures are major surgeries that are usually only
prescribed to treat morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes, serious hypertension or sleep
apnea. Typically, 15% of patients have negative complications, and .5% dies within
six months of surgery due to post operative complications (USDHHS, 2009).
The surgery itself, regardless of the technique, typically reduces the stomach by
about 90%. When the patient eats even a small amount of food, the first response is
stretching of the wall of the stomach pouch, which then stimulates nerves that tell the
brain the stomach is full. The patient feels as if they ate a large meal with only a
tiny amount of food, also teaching the patient to eat slowly and many very small
meals. Recent research shows that changes in food intake are only partially
responsible for weight loss, with no real evidence in most patients of significant
malabsorption of calories. Instead, the research shows that the surgery

Fanny also converts Lue to Christianity and encourages his garden research but keeps

Lue Gim Gong.
She sees Lue as her creation; others see him as her pet. In fact, he is more
independent than she can accept. Rudely rejecting the possibility of a positive
influence from his own family, she says how she made him as much of an improved
variety of Chinaman as his salmonberry, cherry currant, and tomato were of plants

racism, as she regards him as someone special rather than a typical Chinaman. After
Fanny s death, he was barred from the church they had regularly worshipped in, on
account of his color.
Finally there is Sheba, Fanny s black servant whose father was murdered by the Ku
Klux Klan shortly after winning his freedom from slavery. Sheba worked alongside
Lue in the orange groves and probably understood him best. This is because Sheba s
eyes were the least blinded by prejudice and ignorance. Unlike their white neighbors,
neither Lue nor Sheba was too proud to share their different knowledge and company.

Ashes as a symbol of the tragedy of the middle class, death, and hell in order to
show that the poor citizens of America live a tragic life. The reader is first
introduced to the dirty, impoverished Valley of Ashes when Tom Buchanan brings
the narrator Nick Carraway to meet his mistress, and is later used as a setting of
tragedy. Nick first arrives in the Valley of Ashes when Tom forces him to meet
Myrtle, his mistress. It is also used as the setting for Myrtle s death later on in the

The ash, which is already said to envelop everything outside, has migrated inside,
and is covering the walls, WIlson s suit, and his hair. Though, it doesn t touch the
smoldering Myrtle, who seems to be too much alive to be hidden by the dust. The
ash masks the poor husks who live inside its valley. The Valley of Ashes represents
death, hell, and the tragedy of the middle class. The Valley has seen its fair share
of tragedy, and has been the place where many fates were sealed. It has seen the
horrific death of Myrtle Wilson. It has watched as George Wilson decided that
Gatsby s fate would match both his and his wife s. The ash that veils all who
succumb to its sorrow, is the claustrophobic darkness that only Hell could offer.
Fitzgerald describes the effect of the Valley of Ashes in quite a grim way, WIlson s
glazed eyes turned out to the ashheaps, where small grey clouds took on fantastic
shape and scurried here and there in the faint dawn wind. (Fitzgerald, F. Scott, The
Great Gatsby, Scribner, 1925 Print) This quote takes place after WIlson discovers
his wife, Myrtle, is dead. It clearly shows his absolute despair, as well as the ashes
taking over his soul. He is no longer George WIlson, he is just a host for the
demonic, consuming ash. His fate is decided by not himself, but his own sorrow.
Though it ultimately represents death, the Valley of Ashes has

Nigeria government often take care the duty of tax wage fixation instead of
allowing collective bargaining to play this role, this contributes to the inactive
states of collective bargaining in the country. However, the situation of compelling
all wages agreement to be registered with the Ministry of Labor who decides the
effectiveness of the agreement shows a level of restriction in Nigeria s collective
bargaining. Most Nigerian states intervene in collective bargaining especially when
they provide the job and source of finances, for example, government regulates the
commercial and physical environment of higher institutions by formulating
educational policies, provides services and stipulates conditions of service for
staff. This often results to crisis in industrial relations as it s perceived to be an
attempt by government to compelled labor to take to its directives, instead of
allowing collective bargaining to take its course (Ekpenyong 1989). However,
several studies had shown that workers are often maltreated as employers deny their
employees the right to unionize. The prevention of most employees in the banking
industries by their employers to join workers union is a typical example of the major
setback confronting collective bargaining in Nigeria (Adewumi 2008). The setbacks

It is painful playing football. It is a somber remark made by a retired football star
who would soon abandon his family, become homeless, and eventually kill himself

39. Theme Of Blackberry Picking By Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney s Blackberry Picking, recounts a journey that starts with the
luscious taste of a blackberry, sparking a lust (Line 7) in the speaker to go pick
more. Nevertheless, such a journey is ended with the cache (Line 19) of
blackberries rotting, yet he still continuously picks more every year with the same
outcome, giving a false sense of hope to the speaker. Heaney can convey a strong
image of what it s like to pick blackberries, and he can also portray the personal
feelings of the entire experience through his use of sensory language and strong
imagery. The language Heaney uses, in Blackberry Picking , expresses the intimacy
the speaker has with the taste of the blackberries, producing a visual bond with the
characteristics of the berry. Heaney uses seductive language, such as describing the
taste as thickened wine (Line 6) enough to give a sensation of lust (Line 7) for
wanting to pick more. The blackberries are innate with summer s blood (Line 6)
which stains (Line 7) the mouth with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It starts off with, our palms sticky as Bluebeard s (Line 16), a reference that is
naturally negative, since the use of Bluebeard as a descriptive word for the
stickiness gushing out from the blackberries will only entail an undesirable
outcome. Soon after the speaker brings the fresh berries in the byre (Line 17), does
he witness the tragic sight of fur (Line 18) growing all over the berries. Additionally,
there are several sensory stimulating phrases rat grey fungus , sweet flesh would turn
sour , canfuls smelt of rot , fruit fermented which are used to convey the horror that
emanates from the berries. These phrases powerfully communicate a strong feeling
of disgust, accompanied by an even stronger feeling of disappointment. The long
journey of picking the ripen dark blobs (Line 14) from the patches, is wasted in the
end due to the rotten
40. The Impact Of Rastafari On The Late 1920s And Early
1930s...
Rastafari Rastafari is a young religion that was established in Jamaica in the 1930s,
which originated from Marcus Garvey s movement in the late 1920s against the
oppression of the African Race. Rastafari advanced into a religion right after the
crowning of Halie Selassie I as the emperor of Ethiopia in 1930. There are
approximately 1 million followers all around the world today. There are multiple
branches inside of Rastafari, each of them carrying similar customs, beliefs, and
views.
Rastafarianism commenced in the Jamaican Slums in the late 1920s and early
1930s. Rastafari started out as a movement in the 1920s led by Marcus Garvey, a
Jamaican publisher, journalist, and entrepreneur. Garvey led the organization known
as the Universal Negro Improvement Association, whose intentions were to unify
blacks with their land of origin. Garvey preached Look to Africa where a black king
shall be crowned, he shall be your Redeemer. (BBC) This statement later became the
basis of the Rastafari movement. When Emperor Halie Selassie I crowned himself
emperor of Ethiopia in 1930, Rastafarians saw the crowning as the fulfillment of
Garvey s prophecy. In fact, Rastafari takes its name from the Emperor s original
name, Tafari. (Biography). Rastafari followers believed that Emperor Halie Selassie
was the Black Messiah, Jah Rastafari, who is a figure of salvation. Jah Rastafari was
thought to redeem blacks from white suppressors, reunifying them with Africa, their
native homeland.
41. How Does Dickens Use Pathetic Fallacy In Chapter 1
Task 1: Chapter One of Great Expectations sets up with immediacy that the
sorrowful scenario is about a young boy called Pip. His background is narrated from
the start. Pip has never known his parents; his imagination vividly develops. Thus,
attempting to see what they resembled (lines 5 7), he finds himself unaccompanied in
a deserted churchyard where his parents were buried. Pip accepts death with maturity.
Humorously, he reflects back on his late parents and siblings (lines 13 15). The
narrator does not make any introductory paragraph; hence, the situation is intriguing
and dramatic. Pip has probably little experience to begin his story with. Instantly, the
reader is propelled into his life through persuasive language such as personification
(lines 18, 25). Thus, he structures these events to match up his style in telling the
story. By applying literary techniques such as long... Show more content on

He exploits pathetic fallacy to represent and emphasise Pip s emotions onto the
environments (line 24); this also implies death. Pip is an orphan, therefore, the
reader becomes concerned about him. Also, Dickens introduces the scene in dull,
bland and greyish colour to suggest Pip s monotonous, miserable and loneliest life.
Besides, the gibbet (line 120) implies death sentence for the convict. The marshes
appear serene as previously described. Dickens uses the dreadful appearance of the
stranger to perturb the settings. A bloodcurdling convict with leg irons who
frightens Pip half to death. Metaphorically, Pip becomes a small bundle of shivers
(line 25). Ironically, the convict also exposes his own vulnerability by requesting a
file to saw the chain and food to satiate his hunger. Alone, he cannot either break the
irons, nor survive without food. These interpretations lie solely in the reader s mind.
Pip is petrified, no
42. Antigone And Ismene Analysis
Antigone, a play by Sophocles, contain the events that occur after the death of
Oedipus. Oedipus death marked the ending of the preceding book, Oedipus at
Colonus. Antigone, as reflected in the title, focuses on the life of Antigone, one of
Oedipus daughters. Within the play, Antigone is faced with a major disagreement
with her sister regarding the proper burial of their brother, Polyneices. Antigone and
Ismene are characters that hold contrasting ideals and opinions in reference to the
law of the gods v. the law of the state, family, loyalty, and the role of women in
society; however, these characters come from the same background, so there are
certain things that shape their reputation in the same ways. There was a clear divide...

In the text, she speaks about how their family has been through a lot of
reputational damage already and claims that doing this would only further harm
their reputations. On page 193, Ismene says, Sister, please, please! Remember how
our father died hated, in disgrace... and now, we two are left. Lastly, the sisters have
very different views on the role of women in society and the boundaries placed on
women in society. In the time the play is set in, there is a clear patriarchy set in
place. Burials are to be done by men; therefore, Antigone s plan to give her brother
a proper burial herself is an outrageous act that has a serious legal consequence.
Though her plan went against the accepted social paradigm of the time, she stayed
true to her promise and went ahead with the burial. In the beginning of the play,
when Antigone asks Ismene to accompany her in paying homage to their brother,
Ismene uses their role in society as a reason not to do so. Remind ourselves that we
are women and as such are not made to fight with men. (Roche 193.) In many ways,
Antigone was assuming the role of a man in society, rather than a woman for women
had little independence in their community.
Antigone and Ismene are represented with totally different personalities. Antigone is
a headstrong, relentless, independent woman who would do anything for her family.
This is made evident in both her success in giving her brother a proper burial and in
her loyalty to her father in Oedipus at
43. The Effects Of Peer Pressure On My Life
Friendship is a human born initiative that comes from within. In this world we are
leaving in no one would want to be alone or isolated including me. Peer pressure in
my life has had both negative and positive effects in my life when I was growing
up from my adolescent age to teenage age until now are a grown up adult. During
my adolescent years when peers were an important aspect in my life by shaping
the way I would act and think in future I began to develop intimate friendship that
was more elusive that was more constant than in my childhood time. In may ways
this friendship was an essential component of my development that changed my
reasoning and the way I see life today. This provided me with safe venues where I
could explore my identity and also a safe heaven when I wanted someone to
confine to in regard to my body changes and needs. I was on a notion that I
belonged more to my age group than my pestering parents who were out to make
my life miserable. Regardless of this my parents and other grown up adults became
more concern when they started noticing my behavioral changes and my choice of
friends. I thought that my parents were simply trying to be snoopy or trying to
limit my space and at first this did not go down well with me. Although I hated
been monitored like a toddler who depended on others to make decision for them as
they could not make a reasonable decision on their own. My parents were very

44. African, Medieval Kingdom Of Mali, Questions And
Answers
1. Were you surprised by anything you read in the sources on the African, medieval
kingdom of Mali? I was surprised by how big the Mali Empire was, and how many
people lived in the land (roughly size of western Europe, 50 million people). I was
also surprised by how rich Mansa Musa was so rich that 500 slaves could go before
him caring golden staffs that were four pounds!
2. As the people of medical West Africadid not generally record information through
their own written language, how do you think historians know so much about Mali? A
lot of the information known about the Mali Empire probably came from foreigners
that visited a few of over 400 cities in the Mali Empire. Since Mansa Musa built
large scale projects, like palaces in Timbuktu and Gao, architectural scholars and
enthusiasts most likely visited them, and left detailed records. Simerly, Musa also
promoted education, as he built a university. Because of this, foreigners would have
come to the Mali Empire to study. During their stay, the students would also have
written about the empire. Finally, traders would have also have helped historians
learn about the Mali Empire. By recording what items were traded, and how much of
each item was traded, historians would know about the wealth of Mali. ... Show more

Based on the sources you have read thus far, what role does trade appear to play in
cultural and economic progress in the civilizations you encountered in these readings
and perhaps in those you studied in the 8th grade? In most cases, trade provides
wealth to the region, which in turn stabilizes and fortifies it. With the security the
region has, the people start to flourish, and arts, learning and technology grow. For
example, when trade started to flourish in Europe, towns were established, new
farming techniques were discovered and people could start to specialize in jobs other
than farming. Also Venice, Marco Polo s hometown, was established, and also
flourished, because of
45. The Use Of Vengeance In Poe s Literature
The author Edgar Allan Poe used many acts of vengeance in his writings, this
became a huge phenomenon mainly because people had never seen such acts in
literature. Poe s main reason for his writings of vengeance was because of traumatic
experiences throughout his life. He is the first writer to depict fictional horror and
vengeance based upon the events that occur during his life. Characters in his stories
are usually committed acts of vengeance or experienced them. In the short stories the
Pit and the Pendulum and the Cask of AmontilladoEdgar Allan Poeuses the literary
devices of tone and foreshadowing to discuss man s vengeance.
Edgar Allan Poe, an excellent gothic styled writer, has written many stories about
death because the people he cherished died from drowning in their lungs due to
tuberculosis. Poe s usage of man s vengeance leads to many deaths of many
characters, whether they are friend or foe some act of revenge usually happens in his
stories. In the short story The Pit and the Pendulum , the narrator whose name is
never given, is sentenced to death for his crime. The Spanish Inquisition was a
judicial institution seemingly established to combat heresy in Spain. This is an act of
vengeance because whatever the narrator had done was bad enough for the Spanish
Inquisition to have a vengeful demeanor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Fortunato from the first sentence. The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as

intends to murder Fortunato in order to satiate his vengeful thirst for an unknown
insult. There were no attendants home; they had absconded to make marry in honor
of time. (734) This is another example of foreshadowing death by Poe. Montresor did
not want anyone to be in the home at the time of the

47. Microbial Infections
Introduction The hypothesis about microbial infections as origin of mental
disorders has long been discussed and recently been enhanced in case of the
pathogenesis of schizophrenia (Krause, et al. 2010). It is known that
environmental factors and genetic predisposition contribute to such disease
episodes (Gershon, et al. 1987; Tsuang, et al. 2001). Borna disease virus (BDV)
might represent such a cofactor (Bode 1995; Bode, et al. 1995). This virus has
been found worldwide and has been discussed to be occasionally zoonotic (Bode
and Ludwig 2003; Ludwig and Bode 2000; Richt and Rott 2001). It is non
cytolytic, causing persistent infections, with predilection sides in old brain areas
(limbic system); it replicates in the nucleus of (preferentially) neurons and infects
a variety of animal species (Liu, et al. 2014; Ludwig, et al. 1988). The virus has a
single stranded, non segmented genome (less than 10kb) and is of negative
polarity. A new family Bornaviridae within the order Mononegavirales has been
created (De La Torre, et al. 1996; Mazaheri Tehrani, et al. 2014; Sauder, et al. 1996;
Zocher, et al. 2000). Recently, the finding of endogenous Borna like N protein

by the use of these sensitive test systems. The aim of the following study was to test

hospital for BDV parameters (CIC and Ag), and to compare the data with those of
blood donors regarded as controls. Furthermore, to evaluate whether psychiatric
symptoms among in patients would correlate with BDV specific CIC and Ag in

There are many types of trauma that can effect an adolescent and without the proper
treatment of the traumatic event the adolescent can have difficulty adapting and
developing into adulthood. Kathleen J. Moroz, of the Vermont Agency of Human

physical integrity, sense of self, safety of survival or to the physical safety of
another person significant to the child. She goes on to list the types of trauma a child
may be exposed to. Abuse of every kind, domestic violence, natural disasters,

PTSD may be accompanied by other types of mild cognitive impairment, such as
relatively impoverished autobiographic memory for positive events, as well as
problems with attention, working memory, and the learning of novel word
associations, suggesting the disruption of neural mechanisms affecting specific brain
circuits. PTSD is a form of dissociation and involves two distinct parts that effect the
consciousness and behavior of an adolescent. One is numb and avoidant of traumatic
memories, but more or less functional in daily life, and another is enmeshed in
traumatic memories (Diseth 83). These elements of dissociation cause attachment
and adaptive disorders that will perpetrate further harm to the adolescent. Trauma is
related to other behaviors in adolescents, such s numbing, social withdrawal,
separation anxiety and new fears. There are four elements that an adolescent will
react to in a crisis situation. First, the emotional responses involve anger, shock, grief,
a sense of helplessness, loss of pleasure in everyday activities, terror, guilt and even
phobias. These emotional responses then result in cognitive distortions such as
impaired decision making, lowered self esteem, worry, memory impairment and
nightmares. The physical effects of the emotional and cognitive changes can also be
a detriment of the adolescents health due to having

50. Analysis Of The Knight And His Tale
An Analysis of the Knight and His Tale in The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales, a poem consisting of several tales told by various pilgrims, is
perhaps the most well known work of Geoffrey Chaucer. The Canterbury Tales
Chaucer introduces the pilgrims in the general prologue many of the pilgrims in a
satirical manner. In prologue to The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer introduces
the Knight as a true perfect gentle knight, (5) who exemplifies the code of chivalry.
The tale that the Knight later narrates is appropriate because it tells of two knights
fighting for the hand of the same maiden while remaining chivalrous.
The image of a knight was not always romantic nor was it noble. It was not until
after the Norman Conquest that the term knight began to signify nobility. As the
image a knight shifted to represent an elite member of society, The Catholic Church
developed a chivalric code in order to govern the behavior of knights. (Rogers 263
264). According to chivalric code, knights were bound to defend society, treat
women with honor and respect, remain faithful to God, and exemplify courtly
love, the desire or a need to serve a noble woman (Rogers 100). However, while
most knights attempted to follow the chivalric code very few of them were able to
become perfect knights (Corrick 35). The concepts of chivalry and a perfect knight
are prominent in Chaucer s description of the knight in the general prologue
(Rogers100 101).

Everyone in life has faced different obstacles, I mean when you re brought up you
learn that life isn t a nice pleasant place. One of my favorite quotes of all time is by
Sylvester Stallone who said, Let me tell you something you already know. The
world ain t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will
beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or
nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. Life is defined by how you advance past these
obstacles that are put in your path. Look at the successful people life such as: Bill
Gates, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Mark Cuban, etc. All of these people have
experienced failure or tragedy before making millions; however, they did not let
this tragedy impair their vision of success. In my life I have experienced many
tragedies much like everyone else in this world, but there is one tragedy that has
affected the way I am today and the outlook I have in life. Earlier this year my
grandpa had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. For those who don t know
what pulmonary fibrosis is, it is essentially the scarring of the tissue in your lungs
causing shortness of breath and making it hard to breathe. Now I was devastated by
this obstacle in my life. I hated to sit there and watch him struggle breathingwhile just
sitting in that unembellished hospital bed. The doctors told us that there was no cure
for his disease, and that ultimately he d have to fight. They did set him up

I honest believe this is the only remedy for providing up to date technology, the
company has to make it a priority to provide the same technology to the global
environment. The customs can be corrected by provided a print out of what is
allowed and what is not allowed to be brought into or out of a country a passenger
is traveling through. The information is available online but some older passengers
aren t as savvy with technology so they may not receive the same information. With
this tactic there is not any excuse for not knowing what is expected when going
through customs. The strategies I stated above will be successful, only if they are
applied. Without application the strategy will be a failure. Within the domestic
environment the security system can be significantly improved and decrease the
risk for terrorist attacks greatly. This technology needs to be protected by requiring
a security clearance for all employees who work for the company. This way you have
a thorough back ground check on everyone who works for US Airways Group and the
risk for inside information getting out to enemies of the United States is low. Within
the global environment technology needs to be advanced. The company can protect
this technology by only providing the technology to its global counterparts and not the

Manning was identified as the individual who leaked the horrifying Collateral
Murder video, widely distributed and viewed on the Internet, in which several
innocent Iraqis as well as two Reuters journalists are gunned down by a U.S. Apache

Afghan War Diary (Lucas). The Iraqi War Logs and the Afghan War Diary are a
