Government Infringement On Right And Privacy
Brad Tulkki Cisewski ENGL 1202 14 15 March 2017 Government Infringement on Right to
Privacy According to Vice President Mike Pence, The Patriot Act is essential to our continued
success in the war on terror here at home. (Brainyquote). Politicians across the political spectrum
overwhelmingly agree that the Patriot Act is a necessary measure to protect the citizens of the
United States from the imminent threat of terrorism. After the terror attacks of September 11th,
2001, fear filled the emotions of every red blooded American. This fear resulted in an uproar and a
demand for increased security to stop terrorism. Politicians created the Patriot Act just over a month
after 9/11, and it was signed into law under president Bush on... Show more content on

Under this amendment, the right to privacy for American citizens, is construed. The fourth
Amendment is frequently violated. From government scanning of internet usage to power hungry
law enforcement disregarding our rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. Due to rapid
advancements in technology, the protections that are established in the Fourth Amendment are
often thrown away when it comes to obtaining search warrants for information collected online.
Technology has progressed to the point where the government, or anyone else who has the
necessary skills and resources can even access cameras on phones, computers, and TVs remotely
in order to watch people in their homes. In the case of Robbins v. Lower Merion School District,
students who were loaned laptops from their school were being spied on in their homes through
webcams installed in the computers. The software that was accessing the software was supposedly
being used to track the location of the computers in the event that they were lost. The Lower
Merion school district abused this software to track the students actions outside of school. One
student, Blake Robbins, was called into talk to his Assistant Principal when the school district had
captured snapshots of him consuming what looked to be little white pills. The pills were simply

Cultural Culture Of Nigeria
Nigeria is located in West Africa along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and bordered by
Cameroon and Benin to the east and west respectfully. It is comprised of over 180 million and is
considered one of the most populated nations in the world. It is a nation that is ruled by a caste
of politicians, wealthy business men, and the educated elite. The rest of the nation is subjugated
to sub par living standards and mediocre health care. At a glance one would think that Nigerians
are doing well for themselves as they have one of the largest economies on the continent; however
most Nigerians are forced to live in squander and are not given much of a chance to improve their
lot. Nearly half of Nigerias population is made up of people that are not even considered adults in
the United States. With over five hundred ethnic groups Nigeria has an extremely diverse group
although the Hausa, Yoruba, Ibo, and Fulani make up nearly seventy percent of the nation. There is
a minority of British, American, East Indian, Chinese, white Zimbabwean, Japanese, Greek, Syrian
and Lebanese immigrants in Nigeria as well. (Simpson, 2008) Most immigrants are farmers,
merchants, or missionaries. With all the ethnic groups and immigrants there are nearly five hundred
languages spoken in Nigeria. English is the official language due to a brief British colonization
which was ended around Nineteen Sixty. Nigerian culture however did not suffer the same from
British influence.

Essay on Community Profile
Introduction
The locality I have based my community profile on is Ardoyne. I feel that Ardoyne is familiar
enough for me to carry out my research as I have lived here all my life. Although my project is
based in Belfast city centre, we work with many groups and young people from the Ardoyne area.
this would prove beneficial to myself as I would sometimes have already developed a relationship
with the young people through community life.
I will firstly explore the community I have chosen by speaking to local people, using
photographs, and recordings of my observations. In doing so I intend to create a picture and
overall feeling of the community as well as the people who live here. This data will be
accompanied by my own comments in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For a community that witnesses a lot of conflict during each year Ardoyne is full of people who
love to chat and help out whatever why they can. The older generation in particular take pride in
their what s mine is yours attitude. While taking this picture an old lady quietly asked me if I
was a tourist. I replied laughing telling her no. she went on to tell me that she walked her
granddaughter to school through the protesters each morning while it lasted. In that time she had
to endure spitting and urine filled balloons being hurled at her by the protesters. She also talked
about the day a pipe bomb was thrown at the parents and children of the school. She said she
wouldn t wish it on anyone as she slowly walked off. I couldn t help thinking what a bizarre
experience just chatting with the old lady, who was completely open to sharing her experience with
me.
Improving a specific aspect of community life
The aspect of community life I have chosen to explore is the drinking culture within Ardoyne. In
the small area that is Ardoyne there are eight pubs, five of which being night clubs. I feel that this
environment is contributing to the many issues facing the community of Ardoyne.

Mind In Hegel s Decade Of The Brain
Our modern understanding of the human mind is much different than it was in the 17th to 19th
century, all the results from scientific research on brain studies during the Decade of the Brain.
Before, Mind was viewed as a real object but now we realize that people process information
somewhere, someplace in the brain. It was a creator of ideas with the personality. Today we realize
that it is what the rain does, an expression of neural networks processing information. And indeed
computer programs are being built to emulate that process. It is not an ethereal entity that can create
memories nor complete pictures on a scratchpad but along neural fibers that reconstruct outlines of
pictures. There are various states of consciousness and using language we hypothesize ideas, which
are then checked out on the opposite side of the brain against reality. And sometimes the physiology
falters and Mindgoes berserk. But what that describes is a natural process with information
provided from the senses. It is not in communication with higher beings. It is simply engaged in
working out problems. Mind is thus a process and in fact dialectics is the very process that
engages Mind. Self recognition that Hegel had in his mind was looking for what was outside the...

Analysis Of Empress Theodora And Victory Stele Of Naram-Sin
Although these artworks can look completely different at first glance, they have many
similarities. For example, all three artworks have one major figure, and portray an importance
on that figure. Thutmose s Nefertiti only has one subject, although that subject is wearing a
huge crown to signify her importance. Victory Stele of Naram Sin s artist scales Naram Sin by
almost two times, compared to the rest of the figures, to show his importance. As well as giving
him a helmet with two horns, unlike any other figure on the relief. He is also positioned closest
to the stars, and is the major focal point. Empress Theodora s artist gave Theodora a larger head
dress and a halo to signify her importance. The artist also gave her gold details on her clothing
and made her slightly higher than every other figure to continue emphasizing her importance. In
general, although they are very different pieces, every artist successfully tells the viewer which
figure is the most important. In addition, Victory Stele of Naram Sin and Empress Theodora
look very different because of the medium used and the figures shown. However, they both tell a
story to the viewer. Victory Stele of Naram Sin is telling of the victory over the Lullubi people,
and how the leader is considered to be a god on earth (Unknown 1). The placement of Naram Sin,
his army and enemies portray this very well, and the background helps give the viewer a good idea
of a setting. Empress Theodora tells of each figure walking

The Battle Of Midway Saw The Sinking Of The Japanese Carriers
The battle of Midway saw the sinking of the Japanese carriers, Akagi; Soryu; Hiryu and Kaga as
well as the cruiser Mikuma. The American navy lost one carrier which was the USS Yorktown.
The Battle resulted in the deaths of 2500 Japanese navy men and 307 deaths to the American
navy. The Japanese had lost invaluable sailors in the battle as the crew on board the aircraft
carriers were highly trained and had many years of experience working on the complex
carriers.(Source E) So when the Japanese started to build new aircraft carriers they found that it
was difficult to appoint crew has many had not enough experience, this heavily delayed and cost
the Japanese as by this stage the American army had begun their campaign in taking back the
islands the Japanese had taken over months before. Since 1930 the Japanese conquests with the
Chinese had cause ever increasing friction with the US. From the early 1940s America had
banned exports of strategic materials such as scrap iron and metal to the Japanese Empire, then
in 1941 they lead and oil embargo and froze all of the Japanese assets. This had huge effects on
the Japanese Empire as they imported 90% of their oil. Because of this the Japanese leadership
made the decision to invade and take over neighbouring territories and take their resources which
Japan lacked. But before this could be done they faced a great and powerful obstacle, the
American naval fleet at Hawaii s Pearl Harbour. And thus this lead to Japan s attack on Pearl

A Critique Of The Chinese Room Argument
(Not) Mere Semantics: A Critique of the Chinese Room
The Roman Stoic, Seneca, is oft quoted that it is the power of the mind to be unconquerable
(Seneca, 1969). And so seems that, in recent times, Searle has produced a similar rhetoric. (At least
insofar as strong AI might conquer and reducibly explain mental states). This essay will attempt to
do two things: 1) Examine three central objections to Searle s Chinese Room Argument (CRA);
these being the Systems Reply (SR), Deviant Causal Chain (DCC), and what I have termed the
Essence Problem. The CRA is found to survive the first three, while damaged by the fourth for its
question begging form. And, 2) it will propose a

The latter more specifically states that thoughts are certain kinds of computation and, as universal
Turing machines can compute any kind of computable function, they can in principle be
programmed to actuate a human mind.
Searle s argument can be put propositionally as:
1.If Strong AI is true, then there is a program for Chinese such that if any computing system runs
that program, that system thereby comes to understand Chinese.
2.I could run a program for Chinese without thereby coming to understand Chinese.
3.Therefore Strong AI is false. (Cole, 2014)
Although it should be pointed out that what Searle s precise position has come under scrutiny and
there is reason to change what might be considered the success of the paper depending on what
these reading differences are. (Harnad, 2001)
Weak AI : the claim that computers are merely able to simulate rather than literally think.
It would seem that much of the battle over the CRA s validity turns on different intuitions of
whether semantic content is reducible to syntactic frameworks. (Can computationalism provide a
scientific theory which might elucidate the essential nature of content?)
Systems Reply (Fodor and Block)
Searle (1991a) deftly produces an argument to block the systems objection, namely that the
individual internalise all the elements of the system. So he concludes, If he doesn t understand,
then there is no way the system could understand because the

The War Of The American Civil War
When the American Civil War began in the spring of 1861, those flocking to enlistment stations
in states both north and south chiefly defined their cause as one of preservation. From Maine to
Minnesota, young men joined up to preserve the Union. From Virginia to Texas, their future foes
on the battlefield enlisted to preserve a social order, a social order at its core built on the
institution of slavery and racial superiority . Secession had not been framed by prominent
Southerners like Robert Toombs as a defensive measure to retain the fruits of the revolution
against King George, a fight against those who sought to intrique insurrection with all its nameless
horrors. (Toombs Speech) On January 1, 1863, when Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation went
into effect the war became a revolution. The Union, the soldiers in blue fought to preserve could
no longer exist. On every mile of soil, they would return to the Stars and Stripes from that moment
on, the fabric of society would be irrevocably changed. In May of 1865, with the abolition of
slavery engrained into the Constitution with the passage of the 13th Amendment, the Confederate
armies of Lee and Johnston disbanded, and Lincoln dead of an assassin s bullet; this change was
the only certainty the torn fabric of the newly reunited states was left to be resown. Andrew
Johnson and Southern Democrats believed the revolution of 1863 had gone far enough. Radical

Hypothetical Tailing Breach
In the past, the global mining industry has experienced many catastrophic breaches of the tailing
dams, most recently, failure of the Mount Polley tailings dam in British Columbia in 2014. This
has contributed to the publics skepticism over management and safety of oil sands tailing ponds.
In an event of tailings dam breach, a huge mass of water and sediments, associated with toxic
chemicals will be released, resulting in disastrous environmental and socio economic impacts. For
the particular case of Alberta oil sands, PI s recent study of hypothetical tailing breaches showed
that spill of tailing materials into the nearby waters (e.g., Athabasca River) will have a multi year
effect on the water quality and ecosystem several hundred kilometers

everything is the same as before. What he doesn t realize is that what has changed the most is

lie. Although Norma Jean has found other things to do while he is away she feels lonely and
trapped. Leroy on the other hand feels that she is happy with the life style they have. But what
Leroy does not realize is that they have grown apart. Leroy is having a hard time realizing that
his relationship with his wife is not as strong as he thinks it is. He feels the need talk about their

for Leroy who is having trouble understanding what has happened between him and his wife.
This allows the reader to think badly about Leroy, and also lets the reader judge the way Leroy is
acting. But the reader also understands him since he has been talking about his son for a long

The Importance Of The First Amendment Rights
I would need to say yes that obliging him to go to the meeting in which prayer to God is directed
abuses his First Amendment Rights. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution addresses
religion in two regards. To begin with, it restricts the government from establishing a national
religion. Opportunity from religious abuse is an essential motivation behind why numerous
foreigners resulted in moving to this country. Allowing individuals the flexibility to pick how,
when, and where to worship is a critical thought in this nation. Permitting people the freedom to
choose how, when, and where to worship is an important consideration in this country. Allowing
others to discriminate because of religionnot only compromises this First Amendment right, it also
promotes the economic advantages of belonging to one religion (Moran, 2014).... Show more

The First Amendment also promotes the freedom to associate. On the off chance that a man
relates socially just with individuals from his or her own religion, that is a secured decision. Be
that as it may, Employment is not social; it is financial. It is out of line for a business to pick its
workers on the premise of their religious inclination. How is this inclination work related? It is
definitely not. Employers should respect the rights of employees to worship as they please on
their own time and, if possible, should reasonably accommodate their employees to enable them to
do so (Moran, 2014). I would need to say that the business should have obliged Paul to go to the

Essay On Second Life By Nik Hale
The documentary, Life 2.0, is about the online platform, Second Life. The name of the world is
pretty self explanatory; it allows users to create an avatar and do any of the things that are
possible in the real world; only this is virtual. Mike Hale from the New York Times reviewed this
documentary, writing both good and bad things about it. Rik Panganiban, also known as rikomatic
on his blog and other online forums, saw Life 2.0 and was not a fan.
Both reviewers talk about the main focus of the documentary, as well as how the characters are
depicted, and why. Both reviewers point out that the film focuses on the negative aspects of
Second Life and how the users are affected, generalizing all of the forum s users. While Hale
would have liked the documentary to focus less on the drama in these peoples lives and more on
the way that Second Life functions, Panganiban is disappointed that it failed to show how the
platform allows users to express and explore themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example, he ends his review with, It s enough to make you want to escape the real world. My
speculation as to what he means is that even though the documentary was judgmental, it
compelled the viewer to judge the main characters, which means it was successful. Panganiban on
the other hand, was very subjective and informal in his review (he even uses swear words a
couple times), because it is a post on his blog. Hale uses longer, more complex sentences than
Panganiban, which are more cryptic. This may be because of their

Patrick Francis Moran Research Paper
Patrick Francis Moran was born on the 16th of September 1830 in Leighinbridge, Carlow,
Ireland and passed away on the 16 of august 1911 in Manly, NSW; he was the third Roman
Catholic Archbishop of Sydney and was the first cardinal of Australia. Moran studied for
priesthood that was first at the minor seminary and then at the major seminary, he was
considered so academically smart that he gained his doctorate by acclamation. His studies were
only slightly disturbed by the roman revolution of 1848 1849 and he was ordinated priest on
19th of March 1853. By the age of twenty five he already spoke ten languages both ancient and
modern. While Moran was the Irish college he was at the centre of a missionary enterprise with

the secondary system. Moran authorised the spending of more than 3 million dollars on
building churches, schools and institutions and by the 20th anniversary of his arrival he had
blessed eighty eight foundation stones for churches and schools in his diocese. One of Moran s
largest projects was the near completion of the St Mary s Cathedral. He had finished the

Food In The Filipino Culture
Food is an essential form of socialization in the Filipino culture and social gatherings do not take
place without food. Food and meal patterns emphasize generosity, hospitality, and
thoughtfulness, which support group cohesiveness. Pg. 239. Extending an invite to a gathering
or even sharing one s food is considered a sign of good upbringing and can be used to show
appreciation and caring, to welcome others, celebrate accomplishments, and even be used to
offer support in times of crisis. Their foods consist of influence from Spanish, Chinese, and
American cuisine and are usually sautГ©ed or fried and rice is served with every meal. The rice
is typically steamed but can also be fried and eaten in a desert form. Due to intolerance for dairy
products, only babies or young children consume milk. Food is not just used for social gatherings
but also for medicinal benefits, such as colds, upset stomach, urinary tract infections, sore throats,
and aids in promoting digestion.
The only acceptable method of contraception is natural planning methods. Abortion is considered a
big no, as it goes against their catholic religion and is considered a sin. Most methods of birth
control are not excepted however, recent immigrants seem to be more open to alternative methods
of birth control. Pregnancy is viewed as a blessing and the child bearing woman should be catered
to during the time of pregnancy. Many Filipino women prefer a female physician rather than male

Theme Of Love In Ethan Frome
Ethan Frome was novel about a love story that could not be fulfilled, because the characters that are
having the secret love story are already married or about to be married. The theme that was shown
the most through the book was love. This theme was talked about a lot during the book with two of
the main characters. Between the three main characters one was the string through the whole novel
and that was Zeena. The way Ethan life turn out is because of the choices he has made he cause
everything that has happen to him. Everything can change with just one decision you make. The
theme lovewas shown when Ethan and the person, who lives in his house so she can help his sick
wife with things she needs to be done, falls in love with each other but they have to hide it from
everybody. One day they were walking home together and the book shows symbolism through
what happens. In the book it says, A dead cucumber vine dangled from the porch like the crape
streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan s brain: If it was there
for Zeena Then he had a distinct sight of his wife lying in her bedroom asleep, her mouth slightly
open, her false teeth in a tumbler by the bed. (Wharton 21). The cucumber vine symbolised his
wife being dead but she really was not dead just sick. This helps with the theme because at first
Ethan think him and Mattie can be together but then realises his wife is still alive, The motif that
help clarify the theme is

The Paleo diet is one of the fad diet plans employed to achieve weight loss. The diet mimics
eating habits of the ancestral people and several studies concerning it have been published. This

reviewed the results of a study conducted within the preceding 25 years and consistency was
reported between the initial predictions and the study results.1 The implicated research involved a
group of nine non obese volunteers with a sedentary lifestyle. It entailed a non controlled challenge
in which the candidates were put on the usual diet plans for three days and thereafter put on ramp

My Vacation
Could the day become any worse? One afternoon, my grandmother was looking for houses, I
wanted to go to the mall before 8 because there a huge sale. Suddenly the car started to make
disturbing noises, when we stopped at the stoplight the car cut off and begun to overheat! The
mall was already about to close and the car was steaming! So we decided to relax and turn the
radio on. My favorite song came on and the man on the radio offered $200,000 to the first caller,
we called and won the money! My aunt and I called my grandmother to tell her the amazing
news, she said this would be the perfect time to go on vacation! so my family decided we would
like to travel within the united states and while there, we would visit the cities of New York City,
Hollywood, and Miami.
The first city my family will visit is New York City! When my family and I arrive we will check
into a room at the Plaza Hotel. I will take my sister and little cousin on the balcony to see the
beautiful view! Kinslea my sister will be ecstatic when she sees the lights from the huge towers and

Gender, Racism And Class
Gender, Racism and Class in the movie Bread and Ross and Hammering it out
Fundamentally, gender, racism and class are three controversial social issues that have for a long
period triggered heated debate in the American society. In essence, this issues concern the daily
lives of American citizen and immigrants disregarding their class, social status, educational level or
the position they hold in the society. Therefore, it is imperative that these issues are analyzed
comprehensively in order to take an informed stand about the impact they have to the society. This
paper, seeks to critically examine how gender, racism and class are addressed in the two movies
Bread and Roses and Hammering it .
Discussion
According to (Bread and Roses) gender is described as condition of being either male or female. In
the movie Bread and Roses gender as a social issue is dominant in different scenarios.
Profoundly, women dignity in the movie has been degraded by men who in various scenes have
used them as sexual objects to fulfill their sexual desires. For instance, the Mexican taxi driver to
sorts sexual favors from Maya in order to illegally sneak her to the United States from Mexico.
While in the bar at the Mexican and American border, Maya is sexually molested by the taxi
driver. Further, this immoral behavior in the society is perpetrated by Perez a supervisor in Clean
Angels Company, who seeks to have sex with Rosa in order to offer a job to her sister Maya in the

Colorado Pot Paradox
Colorado s pot paradox: Recreational marijuana is legal, but it s tough to find a place to
consume it This article from los angeles time talks about the use of marijuana or pot in the state
of Colorado. Indeed this article reminds us that the use of cannabis in Colorado as well as the
state of Washington is legal since 2012. Most of this use is for recreational purposes, as other
states like California had tolerated a medical use of marijuana. This article takes us to a much
more remote issue than simple consumption, currently the problem that Colorado residents and
especially tourists who come into the state to take advantage of this legislation, do not know or
consume this drug. The state of Colorado has now voted for the use of pot in bars and restaurant.

Holland was the forerunner in the field and we see that the authorities are increasingly limiting the
use and sale of marijuana. This opposition is interesting insofar as the American states have taken
inspiration from this country to legalize by thinking to control consumption and thus limit the

surrounded by border countries. While this one has the highest consumption of Europe. While we
can see that Colorado use is claimed in public places whereas in France the use of cigarettes is
prohibited this evolution of mentalities is rather surprising. But this evolution responds to a
worldwide problem and the increase in the use of narcotic drugs. The states have either the
repression that does not necessarily lead to an effect on consumption or the legalization that
ensures better control and especially the collection of taxes that are charged on each sale, and

Anterior Cruciate Trauma Case Study
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common of knee injuries especially
occurring during sports related activity. These types of injuries may lead to short term disability
and as well as possible long term complications. It is estimated that 80,000 to 100,000 ACL
reconstructions are performed every year and a significant percentage of those surgeries are
performed on female athletes. Female athletes experience ACL injuriesabout two or three times
more often than men due to how the female body matures and her strength, or lack thereof.
Because of the wear on a healthy ACL, the ACL might not last an entire athletic career especially
in women. Some of the risk factors are unavoidable, such as hormone changes and gender, but the
neuromuscular and biomechanical factors are controllable. If a female athlete can be properly
strength trained and takes the necessary precautions, like stretching for flexibility and core
training for muscle control and balance, she can greatly reduce the risk of injuring her ACL. If
she does not take the necessary precautions and does tear her ACL, surgery is required to replace
the torn ACL and rehabilitation of that ligament is necessary before returning to sports (Hewett et
al., 2012; Siegel et al., 2012). Despite the advances in surgery, the long term... Show more content

functional. But when the ACL is injured in the form of a tear the knee has limited function until the
tear is fixed, and even then many female athletes still have problems with their knees throughout the
rest of their athletic career because the ACL may not recover 100% of its function and stability.
Without reconstruction surgery, everyday tasks such as walking are still possible but for high

Sacrament Of The Last Supper Essay
The Sacrament of the Last Supper by Salvador Dali Salvador Dali s painting, The Sacrament of the
Last Supper (oil on canvas, 65 Вѕ x 105 ВЅ in., c. 1995), has become one of his most iconic
paintings from his late period. This painting portrays one of the most famous scenes from the Bible,
the Last Supper, depicting the twelve disciples eating their final meal with Jesus. This scene has
been created many times throughout history by many different artists. However, through Salvador
Dali s use of equal symmetry, the uncommon setting he chose and the interesting perspective and
focal points, he was able to recreate a completely unique version of this common biblical scene
while adding his twist of surrealism. Much like the many other depictions... Show more content on

This painting depicts the scene from the Bible known as the last supper, where Jesus and his
twelve disciples ate their last meal together before Jesus died. Dali is not the only artist to paint this
famous scene, Leonardo Da Vinci, along with many other artists, created their own version as well.
The difference is that Dali used his surrealism background to create this scene in a completely
unique way. Instead of painting the twelve disciples of Jesus as individuals, Dali painted them
symmetrically so that each man had another mirroring the same pose across the table. This element,
along with placing the setting of the last supper in a dodecagon and showing the beautiful
background, creates a calm and peaceful environment for the disciples to pray. Dali also created two
focal points in this painting, while most artists tend to only choose one. The floating torso is
obviously the surrealist element of this painting, but also completes the message that Dali is
communicating. Though the three elements, symmetry, setting and focal points, Dali created a
completely unique rendition of the last

Analysis Of Midsummer Night s Dream
Midsummer Night s Dream is a perfect example of just how deceit can tear people apart. When
trying to force a situation into something/ a situation you wish it to be you can end up putting
yourself in quite the compromising position. It is a good story on the struggles of true love,
parents wills, and fighting for what one believes in, with just a hint a magical alure to it and a
slight pull of betrayal to make things even more interesting. In the end though, just as almost

The Psychology Of School Violence Essay
Today I m going to be talking about school violence and how different psychologist have
different viewpoints in the same situations. I m going to be talking about Behaviorism,
Cognitive and lastly Humanistic and existential psychologist. So a Behaviorism psychologist
believes that people learn the behavior habits over time from things such as videogames,
violence and TV. So for instances some of the kids that did the shooting probably was exposed
to some type of violence at an early age. Cognitive psychologist more on the metal side of the
process unlike the Behaviorism psychologist. Cognitive approach means that the type of
environment a person is exposed to also plays a big role on how they act later in life. Lastly we
will talk about the Humanistic Psychologist which I think is my favorite one and his approach
on the situation. Most stable people choose to do whatever it is knowing the consequences.
They believe people have the free will and the understanding to make their choices. From a
Behaviorism psychologist view the kids who did the shooting in Newton Connecticut was
probably exposed to some type of violence. Behaviorism believes that behavior is learned
through previous learning experiences or interactions with the social environment. They also
believe that the mental process is too hard to observe and measure. So let s say the kid showed
some type of signs of having issues with his mother before he killed all of those people. His

As individuals the lovers are ignored by mostpeople whose routine lives reflect the passage of time.
The only to notice the lovers and stray their attention from life s normal routine are the children,
who maintain their innocence, but who soon grow up and forget. Cummings has been noted for
this regular indulgence in the themes of love, birth, growth, dying, and their antithesis, (Wegner
48) as found not only in this specific poem playing the parts of the cycle of time but also in many
other of his works.
The poem is expressing the concrete and paradoxically its opposite through a play on pronouns.
Anyone lives in a pretty how town is the story of mostpeople and individuals, simultaneously a
joyous and sorrowful song (Turco 93). The title s ambiguity plays on the use of a hypallage:
rearrangement of syntax word order in a sentence (Turco 92). The title could be interpreted as
either anyone lived in a pretty how town or anyone lived in how pretty a town or how anyone
lived in a pretty town. The anyone could be nobody in particular or that particular person capable
of love. As Robert Wegner writes, [a]s and adjective modifying town, [how] is a superbly
descriptive word suggesting in one touch the typical town where all values must conform to
accepted regular decorum and procedure, a town whose people operate on rigid and mechanical
formalities: a how town ...With these two highly abstract words Cummings

Why Did The British And Chinese Views Of The Opium Trade...
Why did the British and Chinese views of the opium trade differ so strongly from one another?
China and British perspectives on the opium trade were contradistinctive and ultimately became the
foundations of the Opium Wars in 1839 42 and 1856 60. The clash of opinions were not based
around the narcotic opium itself but stemmed from a misunderstanding of cultures, conflicting
economic behaviours and different ethical ideologies. The two countries were fixed in times of two
unrelated eras. For thousands of years China followed a way of life propagated by philosopher
Confucius. Their system of philosophical and ethical teachings was based on three essential values:
filial piety, humaneness and ritual consciousness . Confucian China believed that the development
of human society depended on Man and that divine intervention was not a factor meanwhile Britain
was experiencing the Industrial Revolution. Dramatic engineering and industrial developments with
water power, steam power and coal evolved manufacturing processes, shifting the majority of the
agricultural workforce into manufacturing. Britain s international economic system became more
sophisticated and ultimately their beliefs in a free trade infrastructure reigned supreme.
China viewed itself as an autarkic agricultural economic system and whilst Britain purchased large
amounts of Chinese tea, silk and porcelain the Chinese held the European manufactured products at
very little value. This monopolistic system of

Analysis Of Are Too Many People Going To College
Are too many people going to college? A question that I would have never expected or never

Murray. College is where most people strive to be. It s a place to learn and evolve into a human
being who will change and innovate the world, so a question like this startled me and made me
really confused as to why but it also caught my attention. Murray provides us with reasons,
examples, and statistics on why he believes people should or should not go to college. In his
article Murray talks about the compensations that come with a degree, the reality about college,
bachelor of arts, liberal education, core knowledge, and the four years spent at university. Three
particularly points that sparked my interest were: the truth about college, the supposed rewards
that accompany a college degree, and the four years you spend at your desired institution. I will
be discussing the many flaws that are contained within his arguments and will be utilizing logical
fallacies, diction, to describe why. One of Charles Murray points is about college and claims that
it s not all the hype It s known to be. Murray provides us with an example comparing a young
male, more specifically a high schoolgraduate, aspiring to get a business major or settling as an

Essay about Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Oedipus Rex is a play about the way we blind ourselves to painful truths that we can t bear to see.
Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental
sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing
the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father
and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own blindness
. When the play opens, the people of the town are asking Oedipus for help. A curse has been cast
upon the city and the only way to remove it, is to find the murderer of the last king, Laios. ... Show

It is ironic that the one individual, who comes to help the city, is the individual that has been the
cause of the curse. Oedipus is the illness. Oedipus and Jocasta both don t want to see the truth.
Although it may occur to them at some point, but they don t give it a second thought because
they think it is absurd and it isn t possible. Why should anyone in this world be afraid, since fate
rules us and nothing van be forseen? A man should live only for the present day. Have no more
fear of sleeping with your mother: How many men, in dreams, have lain with their mothers! No
reasonable man is troubled by such things. Jocasta is further from believing than Oedipus, she
constantly tells him not to worry about it, don t get worked up, and to just forget what you were
told. Oedipus cannot forget what the oracle has said and goes on to pursue the case.
Through the course of the play Oedipus is the detective, the judge, and the jury. He investigates,
decides a verdict, and carries out his own punishment. When Tiresias arrives at Thebes Oedipus
questions him looking for answers. Tiresias is a blind man, who ironically can see the future and
truths of people s lives. It is Tiresias who is the first person to tell Oedipus that he has killed his
own father. He tells Oedipus you do not see the evil in which you live. Oedipus doubts Tiresias
ability to see the truths because of his physical blindness and states, You

New Federalism Essay
Two rudimentary stratums exist in the U.S legal system: state law and federal law. Federal laws
apply to the entire nation, whereas state laws affect only said states. Currently, the age of New
Federalism, is upon the U.S. This can be traced back to Nixon in the late 1960s. The era of New
Federalismis described as the transfer of powers from the federal government back to the states.
This transfer of powers seems to be outweighed by the initial power of the federal government
when assessed closely. First, let s get down to the facts. After the tragedy of 9/11, Homeland
Security was implemented. Around fifty billion U.S. federal dollars are being provided to state

federal, state, and local governments. Having one main correspondence at the federal level eases
the distribution of power to the states and local authorities. FEMA recently asked state and local

indicate a shift into a new idea. However, the primary use of this format in Abiku is to demonstrate
the many lives of the Abiku as it continues to torment its mother. This also adds to the belief in
incarnation of the African people. Conversely, Clark use block style poetryin order to demonstrate
the circular manner of the Abiku s numerous reincarnations. There is no separation between the
lines, showing that the Abiku keeps on returning with very little break in between. It is interesting
to read two pieces of literature on the same topic, but written in different manners to get a new

reveals the levels to which Said s persuasion actually manages to persuade the audience. Said s

Said also builds his connection with the audience by recounting tales from his youth and describing

The Language Of An Organization Essay
An association without a language specifically used for communicating is unfathomable. Workers
in an organization utilize language to express and empathize with others opinions, maintain
communication, take care of issues, learn and develop, decide, and monitor records. As the
globalization of business has made corporations and organizations with outposts throughout the
world, language boundaries have developed into many different issues that would have gone
unnoticed on account of domestic organizations, where representatives impart in their primary
language. Given this globalized business environment, it is crucial for multinational corporations to
devise a primarily spoken language. Throughout most of the world, that primary language used in
companies and business is English.
English is a lingua franca, or a common or bridge language as it is often called. Bridge languages
are primarily spoken languages across the world: English, Chinese Mandarin, German, etc.
English is the most prominent language spoken, having 1.5 billion speakers across the world
according to Statista, and Mandarin, the secondary language, has a measly 1.1 billion. This
major difference in speakers has developed the use of English as a major language in trade.
Many companies are undergoing a process termed Englishization which is the process of making
one s company soley process in English. This process is used by companies seeking to join the
global market, and has been used to create a

TCOs play a key role in the production and distribution of counterfeit products and engage in this
activity because it produces high profits comparable to other illicit activities such as drug

countries as Italy, Japan, and Hong Kong have engaged in the counterfeitproducts business with a
direct link to other illicit activities from these groups such as money laundering. Many of these
TCOs have the tactics, techniques and procedures to manufacture, distribute, and sell counterfeit

Free Will
The Concept of Free Will Free will is the ability to make your choices in life without having any
consequences. We may feel the existence of free will until we start thinking and then figure out
there really is not. Thus, free will is nothing other than just an illusion. The moment a person is
born, they are confined to a land of law, a set biological makeup, and environmental factors that
are beyond their control. Hence, human beings do not have free will and ultimate responsibilities
thus the punishment for their misdeeds are not justifiable. A human can very well do what he
wants, but cannot will what he wants. Einstein. We, people, consider ourselves as a free being as

Hence, we are not responsible for our misdeeds as we do not have free will. Let us take an
example of a computer system. Computers do not have its user makes free will and all its
choices. For instance, the computer you just bought spending lot of money is affected by a
virus that duplicates your file and makes it accessible to other users within the network. Would
you shut it down and put it in your basement for its misdeed holding it responsible or take it to
the technician and get it fixed? Another thing to question would be, if one should be punished for
misdeeds if they are mentally ill. People that are mentally ill do not have the capability of
functioning in the society like most other people do. This is due to impairments of the brain that
is way beyond anyone s control. In some court cases, this disability is highly considered. If the
criminal does not have the free will to perform these misdeeds, how can they be held accountable

Steve Jobs Abuse
Steve Jobs was an autocratic leader. He used abuse and threats to motivate Apple employees. Jobs
also made the larger decisions early in the company, by influencing others opinions. As well as
using his own personal vision for Apple products.
First of all Jobs abused employees to encourage them. He would yell obscenities that downgraded
his workers so that they would push themselves further. Debi Coleman, an Apple employee, was
often yelled at by Jobs during board meetings. His words were clear, she wasn t good enough and
neither was her work. Although the criticism was activating it still left the feeling of fear in his
workers, which many autocratic leaders leave with their people so that they follow orders.
Secondly, because, early in Apple history, Jobs would make the larger decisions and use
manipulation to have people agree with him. He had a way of using his charisma to make his own
way of thinking sound better than the opposition s, so that they would agree with him. For
instance, he convinced co founder Steve Wozniak to start selling what was the first edition ... Show

This resulted in engineers and other employees not having any say in the product they were
creating. For example, the engineers who created the first Macintosh had the inside layout so
that it gave the computer the best way to function. Jobs however, saw the inside of the Mac and
ordered that it be laid out in a more pleasing appearance. This request was thought ridiculous by
the engineers because no one was even going to see the inside of the computers anyways, but
Jobs made them redo the inside for his own aesthetic. This shows that he didn t allow a lot of
freedom in Apple and instead hovered over every detail of the Apple products, which didn t let
any of the employees have a relevant opinion on the product. That is the same as any autocratic
leader making sure everyone obeys them and doesn t have a

Lgbt Community And The Community
The main topic of the paper will be discussing about the LGBT community or, also known as the
GLBT community, which is defined as a group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders. The
LGBT community organizes a lot of support and movement for civil rights all around the world,
for example, parades. The paper in mind for this integrative project will be discussing about how
North Americans became more approachable to be acceptant towards the LGBTcommunity mainly
concentrating in Canada and the United States. This topic is relevant for the world we live in

The concept of homophobia/biphobia/transphobia will be relevant to the research since it will

key characters . The concepts reinforced in this discipline will be the key events that altered the
way individuals saw the LGBT community, and key characters who changed the way people
perceived the LGBT community. These issues will help to understand the improvement and
diminishment with key events and key characters from the past six decades. It is in fact true,
North Americans societal attitudes have increased according to researches, that society is more
accepting toward the LGBT community. However, only 19% from the LGBT community says
there is a lot of social acceptance in our current world. Whereas a lot of the people from this
group says they still have been rejected by their family and been called by slurs or jokes.
However, the media has been working a lot more into spreading the message of the acceptance and
equality amongst this discriminated community. Brands and medias (television shows, movies,
reality shows) have been including people from the LGBT community in their work, for example,
Disney kids TV shows now show same sex parents and American Eagle includes gay couples and
heterosexual couples in their commercials. This paper

The Myth About Hephaestus
The myth about Hephaestus had many connections which relate to real life and society. The
connection I made while reading the myth were that looks do not matter, everyone has a talent and
hard work. Hera gave up her son, Hephaestus because he looked ugly and deformed without
knowing his personality. This took place during the Unusual Birth part of the hero cycle. Herahad
seen how her son looked deformed so she threw him into the sea where a Sea God caught him and
took care of him. In real life many people judge each other by how they look without actually
getting to know them. Hephaestus was just born and Hera had no idea about his talents in
Blacksmith and metal work. The second connection I made was that everyone has a talent or

The Complicated Relationship Between The Black And White...
The Complicated Relationship between the Black and White Americans
Amiri Baraka s play the Dutchman is a portrayal about the interactions between the two major
characters Lula and Clay. The two came from different races, whereas Clay is a twenty year old
African American, while Lula on her thirties is a white woman. It all started when Lula had the
courage to approach Clay, accusing the latter intent of staring from the window of a train. In their
conversation, it demonstrates how Lula was trying to manipulate the situation, depicting the
relationship between the two races and the problem about stereotyping. In the play, Lula first
appeared as a beautiful and attractive white woman with an apple at her hand (Baraka, 1).
Somehow, if her character will be interpreted based on Biblical teaching, it appears that she is
more like a temptress like Eve. Although, Lula only met Clay for the first time, but she acted like
knowing everything about the latter. She even mocked and insulted Clay, especially with regards to
his intellect and clothing. Through this portrayal, the Lula was trying to reveal her true nature as a
rude individual, and there is no way Clay could approach her on the same footing.
The Dutchman as a Play
Clearly, the character of Lula represents the White people and their racist attributes. Through her
actions alone, she was trying to show herself as more powerful than Clay.
Meanwhile, the character of Clay is the opposite of Lula, considering that he is an

Epistemic Virtue And The Ecological Crisis Summary
In Byron Williston s essay, Epistemic Virtue and the Ecological Crisis , Williston examines Joel
Kovel s ideas on what it takes to get ahead in a capitalist society: To succeed in the marketplace
and to rise to the top, one needs a hard, cold, calculating mentality... None of these traits are at all
correlated with ecological sensibility or caring (Kovel, quoted in Williston, p. 250;252). Kovel s
ideal person is one that is always looking for deeds that are self serving. Kovel is implying that to
be successful in life, one must put morals as an afterthought in order to move ahead in this
capitalistic society. I disagree with Kovel statement, based on how Kovel s claims on how to be
successful is not true for all professions. Furthermore, I disagree with Kovel s statements that if
someone is successful, they cannot be environmentally sensitive, or possess the trait of being
caring by looking at the cases of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. When Kovel
states to rise to the top, one needs to have a calculating mentality, this may be true for some people,
but not all. Kovel is picturing the stereotype of the businessman , one who puts their career over
being emotionally caring and environmentally friendly. Yet someone s career

This leads me to conclude that Kovel believes that one must choose between being successful or
being environmentally friendly and caring. When looking at the example of Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie, both high paying actors and supporters of the environment, they are the parents to
six children (Roberts 2018). One would consider the raising of a child, shows that they contain the
caring personality trait. Therefore, Jolie and Pitt can be successful in their fields, sensitive about
the environment, and are still caring people, as they are parents. This goes against Kovel s idea of

Hitler s Influence On The Nazi Regime
To assess the popularity of the Nazis one must first establish the meaning of popularity and in
what ways it can be assessed. Popularity in this instance is support and conformity to the Nazi
regime. This essay will span from Hitler and the party s early days in the Burgerbraukeller in
Munich up to the death of the regime in 1945. The evidence used will span from Hitler s own
words in Mein Kampf to the masses of propaganda left behind upon the regimes collapse. The
biggest historiographical debate in my opinion on this subject is resistenz argued by Martin
Broszat and Loyal reluctance argued mainly by Robert Gellately and Ian Kershaw. During this
essay both sides will be evaluated with the idea of popularity at the forefront and how each
argument adds or detracts from my argument that the Nazis were mainly a popular regime. Loyal
reluctance can be described in this context as loyalty to the regime but reluctance to change in
order to fit the image of the regime. For example a women wearing make up does not necessarily
mean she is showing resistance or resistenz but is simply unwilling to change although she
supports the regime in full. Up until 1936 conformity had a veneer of legality with the use of the
Gestapo and the secret police. Evans used the term the sunny side of the regime (Kershaw, p. 13)
to term 1933 to 1936. This appears to be an accurate estimate of the support for the Nazis up until
this point as the organisations put into place seemed to stem the

The Lucifer Effect By Philip Zimbardo Essay
The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo, presents a significant question regarding the essence of
human nature: How is it possible for typical, ordinary or even good natured people to become
capable of perpetrating evil? While striving to understand unexpected, or abnormal behaviors, we
tend to put our main focus on internal determinants such as genes, character, and personality,
simultaneously ignoring external, situational factors that could be the central, critical catalyst for
an apparent behavioral change. Typically, this catalyst lies in the system that creates and maintains
such situations that result in questionable behaviors. Zimbardo confirms that the world is filled
with good and evil. With that being said, the barrier between good and evil is permeable and
nebulous. This leads the reader to this central question: Am I capable of evil? In order to answer
this question, one must consider all internal, as well as, external elements of the given situation.
Summary: The book, The Lucifer Effect, gives a detailed chronologic transformation of human
character that took place during Zimbardo s prison experiment. This experiment consisted of
randomly assigning twenty four healthy, normal intelligent college students. Twelve of the twenty
four individuals were assigned to role play the prisoners (nine plus three alternates), and the other
twelve were chosen to role play the prison guards (also, nine plus three alternates). These students
had no prior record of criminal

Positive Impact Of Two Stable Biological Parents On Children
Positive Impact of Two Stable Biological Parents on Children
The debate on the type of family structure that has a positive influence on children has been widely
contentious. In the recent years, the family structure has continued to change. Many people in the
modern society have continued to change their attitudes when it comes to matters of marriage and
raising children. There are more single parents in the society today as a result of divorce and
separations. Consequently, this has contributed to an increase in the number of children brought up
by single parents. The current changes in family structure have become an issue of public concern
because of the effect it has on both the parents and children. It is evident that children who are
brought up by two biological parents do well as compared to children raised by single parents.
Biological parents in this case refer to married couples who relate to their children through blood
(Bachman et al., 2012). The single parent can be a biological father or mother who takes care of
the needs of his or her children. Two biological parents play an important role in providing the
children with necessary support during younger age by employing various parenting styles and
practices. Marriage is a social norm and the idea of raising children should be a combined effort of
both parents. Children raised by single parents lack good parental care and support which impact
on their lives years later. This paper discusses why two biological

Analysis Of The Movie Rainman By Barry Levinson
Rainman, 1988, directed by Barry Levinson is a drama, that revolves around Charlie Babbitt (Tom

An autistic savant is someone that suffers from autism but also has an incredible skill or
capability that the average person does not possess, or as Darold A. Treffert, MD of the
University of Wisconsin Medical School, describes it, ... is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in
which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some island of
genius which stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap. Although the majority of
savants are autistic, one in ten of people who have autism have savant syndrome, it is still possible
to not be autistic and have savant syndrome with less than 1% of the non autistic population being
a savant, although those people often have other mental problems e.g. mental retardation. Male
savants also outnumber female savants 6 to 1. Traditionally savants were known as idiot savants ,
which is a french term first introduced by Dr. J. Langdon Down in 1887 that means unlearned skill
. There are many different types of savants, that all have different abilities and skills, the most

Gun Weapons Of The United States
There is an estimated 300 million registered gun owners in the United States. With that many
Americans owning guns, its not a surprise nearly 68% of all homicides reported to the FBI
involved firearms. It s a good thing the forensics of firearms has advanced to a point that with just
a single round recovered, ballistic experts can tell investigators, what caliber round was fired what
type of weapon fired the round, and in some cases the distance at which the round was fired.
Without such advancement, more murderers would be walking free.
When arriving to a crime scene where weapons are present, safety is always top priority. Treat
every firearm as if it is loaded. When deciding to unload a weapon you always want to do so with
the utmost care, to preserve all types of evidence. This evidence includes fingerprints, blood,
hair or fibers, cylinder halos and debris in the barrel and /or cylinder.(www.crime scene

collection. If the collector is unsure of the proper procedure, assistance should be sought from a
competent source such as a firearms instructor, departmental armorer, or an on site firearm
examiner. Always follow your department regulations. When unloaded revolvers prior to moving
the cylinder it should be marked to indicate its position as found. This can be done by two pen or

Advantages Of Lenovo
3.1 Recommended Future strategic direction to attain competitive advantage
3.1.1 Proposed strategy
It is important for a company to choose a relevant internationalization strategy in order to attain
competitive advantage. Basically, competitive advantage is a company s ability to perform in one
or more ways that competitors cannot or will not match (Philip Kotler, Gary Armstrong, 2007, p182)
As Lenovo has been successfully internationalizing into other country by using joint venture as
their strategy, the new relevant proposed strategy that the company can use is direct exporting.
Direct exporting is considered relevant to be used as the new strategy for Lenovo because it is the
least risky strategy of all. In fact, Lenovo can maximizes their profit and minimizing their risk in

As direct exporting is the new proposed strategy in 3.1.1, Lenovo will be focusing on the pressures
for global integration which is to seek cost reduction through economies of scale and arbitrage
benefits. As Lenovo wanted to attain competitive advantage through cost leadership strategy, they
first have to cut down their cost in order to be able to sell product with lower price. Hence, the
pressure of global integration in cost reduction is identified there.
The advantages that global integration can give to Lenovo through cost leadership are that they can
help Lenovo to save costs and achieve global efficiencies. They can also improve the quality of
product and processes. High quality product promotes global brand recognition and gives rise to
customer preference and efficient international marketing programs. They create economies of
scale, which can result in lower operational costs, higher quality standardized product and

(Brainyquote). Politicians across the political spectrum overwhelmingly agree that the Patriot Act is a necessary measure to protect the citizens of the United States from the imminent threat of terrorism. After the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001, fear filled the emotions of every red blooded American. This fear resulted in an uproar and a demand for increased security to stop terrorism. Politicians created the Patriot Act just over a month after 9/11, and it was signed into law under president Bush on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under this amendment, the right to privacy for American citizens, is construed. The fourth Amendment is frequently violated. From government scanning of internet usage to power hungry law enforcement disregarding our rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. Due to rapid advancements in technology, the protections that are established in the Fourth Amendment are often thrown away when it comes to obtaining search warrants for information collected online. Technology has progressed to the point where the government, or anyone else who has the necessary skills and resources can even access cameras on phones, computers, and TVs remotely in order to watch people in their homes. In the case of Robbins v. Lower Merion School District, students who were loaned laptops from their school were being spied on in their homes through webcams installed in the computers. The software that was accessing the software was supposedly being used to track the location of the computers in the event that they were lost. The Lower Merion school district abused this software to track the students actions outside of school. One student, Blake Robbins, was called into talk to his Assistant Principal when the school district had captured snapshots of him consuming what looked to be little white pills. It is comprised of over 180 million and is considered one of the most populated nations in the world. It is a nation that is ruled by a caste of politicians, wealthy business men, and the educated elite. The rest of the nation is subjugated to sub par living standards and mediocre health care. At a glance one would think that Nigerians are doing well for themselves as they have one of the largest economies on the continent; however most Nigerians are forced to live in squander and are not given much of a chance to improve their lot. Nearly half of Nigerias population is made up of people that are not even considered adults in the United States. With over five hundred ethnic groups Nigeria has an extremely diverse group although the Hausa, Yoruba, Ibo, and Fulani make up nearly seventy percent of the nation. There is a minority of British, American, East Indian, Chinese, white Zimbabwean, Japanese, Greek, Syrian and Lebanese immigrants in Nigeria as well. (Simpson, 2008) Most immigrants are farmers, merchants, or missionaries. With all the ethnic groups and immigrants there are nearly five hundred languages spoken in Nigeria. English is the official language due to a brief British colonization which was ended around Nineteen Sixty. Nigerian culture however did not suffer the same from British influence. I feel that Ardoyne is familiar enough for me to carry out my research as I have lived here all my life. Although my project is based in Belfast city centre, we work with many groups and young people from the Ardoyne area. this would prove beneficial to myself as I would sometimes have already developed a relationship with the young people through community life. I will firstly explore the community I have chosen by speaking to local people, using photographs, and recordings of my observations. The older generation in particular take pride in their what s mine is yours attitude. While taking this picture an old lady quietly asked me if I was a tourist. I replied laughing telling her no. she went on to tell me that she walked her granddaughter to school through the protesters each morning while it lasted. In that time she had to endure spitting and urine filled balloons being hurled at her by the protesters. She also talked about the day a pipe bomb was thrown at the parents and children of the school. She said she wouldn t wish it on anyone as she slowly walked off. I couldn t help thinking what a bizarre experience just chatting with the old lady, who was completely open to sharing her experience with me. Improving a specific aspect of community life The aspect of community life I have chosen to explore is the drinking culture within Ardoyne. In the small area that is Ardoyne there are eight pubs, five of which being night clubs. I feel that this environment is contributing to the many issues facing the community of Ardoyne. • 7. Mind In Hegel s Decade Of The Brain Our modern understanding of the human mind is much different than it was in the 17th to 19th century, all the results from scientific research on brain studies during the Decade of the Brain. Before, Mind was viewed as a real object but now we realize that people process information somewhere, someplace in the brain. It was a creator of ideas with the personality. Today we realize that it is what the rain does, an expression of neural networks processing information. And indeed computer programs are being built to emulate that process. It is not an ethereal entity that can create memories nor complete pictures on a scratchpad but along neural fibers that reconstruct outlines of pictures. There are various states of consciousness and using language we hypothesize ideas, which are then checked out on the opposite side of the brain against reality. And sometimes the physiology falters and Mindgoes berserk. But what that describes is a natural process with information provided from the senses. It is not in communication with higher beings. It is simply engaged in working out problems. Mind is thus a process and in fact dialectics is the very process that engages Mind. • 8. Analysis Of Empress Theodora And Victory Stele Of Naram-Sin Although these artworks can look completely different at first glance, they have many similarities. For example, all three artworks have one major figure, and portray an importance on that figure. Thutmose s Nefertiti only has one subject, although that subject is wearing a huge crown to signify her importance. Victory Stele of Naram Sin s artist scales Naram Sin by almost two times, compared to the rest of the figures, to show his importance. As well as giving him a helmet with two horns, unlike any other figure on the relief. He is also positioned closest to the stars, and is the major focal point. Empress Theodora s artist gave Theodora a larger head dress and a halo to signify her importance. The artist also gave her gold details on her clothing and made her slightly higher than every other figure to continue emphasizing her importance. In general, although they are very different pieces, every artist successfully tells the viewer which figure is the most important. In addition, Victory Stele of Naram Sin and Empress Theodora look very different because of the medium used and the figures shown. However, they both tell a story to the viewer. Victory Stele of Naram Sin is telling of the victory over the Lullubi people, and how the leader is considered to be a god on earth (Unknown 1). The placement of Naram Sin, his army and enemies portray this very well, and the background helps give the viewer a good idea of a setting. Empress Theodora tells of each figure walking ... The American navy lost one carrier which was the USS Yorktown. The Battle resulted in the deaths of 2500 Japanese navy men and 307 deaths to the American navy. The Japanese had lost invaluable sailors in the battle as the crew on board the aircraft carriers were highly trained and had many years of experience working on the complex carriers.(Source E) So when the Japanese started to build new aircraft carriers they found that it was difficult to appoint crew has many had not enough experience, this heavily delayed and cost the Japanese as by this stage the American army had begun their campaign in taking back the islands the Japanese had taken over months before. Since 1930 the Japanese conquests with the Chinese had cause ever increasing friction with the US. From the early 1940s America had banned exports of strategic materials such as scrap iron and metal to the Japanese Empire, then in 1941 they lead and oil embargo and froze all of the Japanese assets. This had huge effects on the Japanese Empire as they imported 90% of their oil. Because of this the Japanese leadership made the decision to invade and take over neighbouring territories and take their resources which Japan lacked. But before this could be done they faced a great and powerful obstacle, the American naval fleet at Hawaii s Pearl Harbour. And thus this lead to Japan s attack on Pearl ... A Critique Of The Chinese Room Argument (Not) Mere Semantics: A Critique of the Chinese Room The Roman Stoic, Seneca, is oft quoted that it is the power of the mind to be unconquerable (Seneca, 1969). And so seems that, in recent times, Searle has produced a similar rhetoric. (At least insofar as strong AI might conquer and reducibly explain mental states). This essay will attempt to do two things: 1) Examine three central objections to Searle s Chinese Room Argument (CRA); these being the Systems Reply (SR), Deviant Causal Chain (DCC), and what I have termed the Essence Problem. The CRA is found to survive the first three, while damaged by the fourth for its question begging form. And, 2) it will propose a The Chinese Room Searle s 1980 essay, Minds, Brains and Programs is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter more specifically states that thoughts are certain kinds of computation and, as universal Turing machines can compute any kind of computable function, they can in principle be programmed to actuate a human mind. Searle s argument can be put propositionally as: 1.If Strong AI is true, then there is a program for Chinese such that if any computing system runs that program, that system thereby comes to understand Chinese. 2.I could run a program for Chinese without thereby coming to understand Chinese. 3.Therefore Strong AI is false. (Cole, 2014) Although it should be pointed out that what Searle s precise position has come under scrutiny and there is reason to change what might be considered the success of the paper depending on what these reading differences are. (Harnad, 2001) Weak AI : the claim that computers are merely able to simulate rather than literally think. It would seem that much of the battle over the CRA s validity turns on different intuitions of whether semantic content is reducible to syntactic frameworks. (Can computationalism provide a scientific theory which might elucidate the essential nature of content?) Systems Reply (Fodor and Block) Searle (1991a) deftly produces an argument to block the systems objection, namely that the individual internalise all the elements of the system. • 11. The War Of The American Civil War When the American Civil War began in the spring of 1861, those flocking to enlistment stations in states both north and south chiefly defined their cause as one of preservation. From Maine to Minnesota, young men joined up to preserve the Union. From Virginia to Texas, their future foes on the battlefield enlisted to preserve a social order, a social order at its core built on the institution of slavery and racial superiority . Secession had not been framed by prominent Southerners like Robert Toombs as a defensive measure to retain the fruits of the revolution against King George, a fight against those who sought to intrique insurrection with all its nameless horrors. (Toombs Speech) On January 1, 1863, when Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect the war became a revolution. The Union, the soldiers in blue fought to preserve could no longer exist. On every mile of soil, they would return to the Stars and Stripes from that moment on, the fabric of society would be irrevocably changed. In May of 1865, with the abolition of slavery engrained into the Constitution with the passage of the 13th Amendment, the Confederate armies of Lee and Johnston disbanded, and Lincoln dead of an assassin s bullet; this change was the only certainty the torn fabric of the newly reunited states was left to be resown. In an event of tailings dam breach, a huge mass of water and sediments, associated with toxic chemicals will be released, resulting in disastrous environmental and socio economic impacts. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution addresses religion in two regards. To begin with, it restricts the government from establishing a national religion. Opportunity from religious abuse is an essential motivation behind why numerous foreigners resulted in moving to this country. Allowing individuals the flexibility to pick how, when, and where to worship is a critical thought in this nation. Permitting people the freedom to choose how, when, and where to worship is an important consideration in this country. On the off chance that a man relates socially just with individuals from his or her own religion, that is a secured decision. Be that as it may, Employment is not social; it is financial. It is out of line for a business to pick its workers on the premise of their religious inclination. How is this inclination work related? It is definitely not. Employers should respect the rights of employees to worship as they please on their own time and, if possible, should reasonably accommodate their employees to enable them to do so (Moran, 2014). • 15. Essay On Second Life By Nik Hale The documentary, Life 2.0, is about the online platform, Second Life. The name of the world is pretty self explanatory; it allows users to create an avatar and do any of the things that are possible in the real world; only this is virtual. Mike Hale from the New York Times reviewed this documentary, writing both good and bad things about it. Rik Panganiban, also known as rikomatic on his blog and other online forums, saw Life 2.0 and was not a fan. Both reviewers talk about the main focus of the documentary, as well as how the characters are depicted, and why. Both reviewers point out that the film focuses on the negative aspects of Second Life and how the users are affected, generalizing all of the forum s users. While Hale would have liked the documentary to focus less on the drama in these peoples lives and more on the way that Second Life functions, Panganiban is disappointed that it failed to show how the platform allows users to express and explore themselves. ... In the book it says, A dead cucumber vine dangled from the porch like the crape streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan s brain: If it was there for Zeena Then he had a distinct sight of his wife lying in her bedroom asleep, her mouth slightly open, her false teeth in a tumbler by the bed. • 24. Anterior Cruciate Trauma Case Study Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common of knee injuries especially occurring during sports related activity. These types of injuries may lead to short term disability and as well as possible long term complications. It is estimated that 80,000 to 100,000 ACL reconstructions are performed every year and a significant percentage of those surgeries are performed on female athletes. Female athletes experience ACL injuriesabout two or three times more often than men due to how the female body matures and her strength, or lack thereof. Because of the wear on a healthy ACL, the ACL might not last an entire athletic career especially in women. Some of the risk factors are unavoidable, such as hormone changes and gender, but the neuromuscular and biomechanical factors are controllable. If a female athlete can be properly strength trained and takes the necessary precautions, like stretching for flexibility and core training for muscle control and balance, she can greatly reduce the risk of injuring her ACL. If she does not take the necessary precautions and does tear her ACL, surgery is required to replace the torn ACL and rehabilitation of that ligament is necessary before returning to sports (Hewett et al., 2012; Siegel et al., 2012). This painting depicts the scene from the Bible known as the last supper, where Jesus and his twelve disciples ate their last meal together before Jesus died. Dali is not the only artist to paint this famous scene, Leonardo Da Vinci, along with many other artists, created their own version as well. The difference is that Dali used his surrealism background to create this scene in a completely unique way. Instead of painting the twelve disciples of Jesus as individuals, Dali painted them symmetrically so that each man had another mirroring the same pose across the table. This element, along with placing the setting of the last supper in a dodecagon and showing the beautiful background, creates a calm and peaceful environment for the disciples to pray. Dali also created two focal points in this painting, while most artists tend to only choose one. So for instances some of the kids that did the shooting probably was exposed to some type of violence at an early age. Cognitive psychologist more on the metal side of the process unlike the Behaviorism psychologist. Cognitive approach means that the type of environment a person is exposed to also plays a big role on how they act later in life. Lastly we will talk about the Humanistic Psychologist which I think is my favorite one and his approach on the situation. Most stable people choose to do whatever it is knowing the consequences. They believe people have the free will and the understanding to make their choices. From a Behaviorism psychologist view the kids who did the shooting in Newton Connecticut was probably exposed to some type of violence. Behaviorism believes that behavior is learned through previous learning experiences or interactions with the social environment. The poem is expressing the concrete and paradoxically its opposite through a play on pronouns. China and British perspectives on the opium trade were contradistinctive and ultimately became the foundations of the Opium Wars in 1839 42 and 1856 60. The clash of opinions were not based around the narcotic opium itself but stemmed from a misunderstanding of cultures, conflicting economic behaviours and different ethical ideologies. The two countries were fixed in times of two unrelated eras. For thousands of years China followed a way of life propagated by philosopher Confucius. Their system of philosophical and ethical teachings was based on three essential values: filial piety, humaneness and ritual consciousness . Confucian China believed that the development of human society depended on Man and that divine intervention was not a factor meanwhile Britain was experiencing the Industrial Revolution. Dramatic engineering and industrial developments with water power, steam power and coal evolved manufacturing processes, shifting the majority of the agricultural workforce into manufacturing. Britain s international economic system became more sophisticated and ultimately their beliefs in a free trade infrastructure reigned supreme. Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own blindness . The era of New Federalismis described as the transfer of powers from the federal government back to the states. This transfer of powers seems to be outweighed by the initial power of the federal government when assessed closely. First, let s get down to the facts. In contrast, one significant difference between the poems by Soyinka and Clark is the format, as one is written in block form and the other is in stanzas. First, the piece by Soyinka contains stanzas, which are used to group specific ideas and themes together, as well as indicate a shift into a new idea. However, the primary use of this format in Abiku is to demonstrate the many lives of the Abiku as it continues to torment its mother. This also adds to the belief in incarnation of the African people. Conversely, Clark use block style poetryin order to demonstrate the circular manner of the Abiku s numerous reincarnations. There is no separation between the lines, showing that the Abiku keeps on returning with very little break in between. It all started when Lula had the courage to approach Clay, accusing the latter intent of staring from the window of a train. In their conversation, it demonstrates how Lula was trying to manipulate the situation, depicting the relationship between the two races and the problem about stereotyping. Epistemic Virtue And The Ecological Crisis Summary In Byron Williston s essay, Epistemic Virtue and the Ecological Crisis , Williston examines Joel Kovel s ideas on what it takes to get ahead in a capitalist society: To succeed in the marketplace and to rise to the top, one needs a hard, cold, calculating mentality... None of these traits are at all correlated with ecological sensibility or caring (Kovel, quoted in Williston, p. 250;252). Kovel s ideal person is one that is always looking for deeds that are self serving. Kovel is implying that to be successful in life, one must put morals as an afterthought in order to move ahead in this capitalistic society. I disagree with Kovel statement, based on how Kovel s claims on how to be successful is not true for all professions. Furthermore, I disagree with Kovel s statements that if someone is successful, they cannot be environmentally sensitive, or possess the trait of being caring by looking at the cases of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Popularity in this instance is support and conformity to the Nazi regime. This essay will span from Hitler and the party s early days in the Burgerbraukeller in Munich up to the death of the regime in 1945. The evidence used will span from Hitler s own words in Mein Kampf to the masses of propaganda left behind upon the regimes collapse. The biggest historiographical debate in my opinion on this subject is resistenz argued by Martin Broszat and Loyal reluctance argued mainly by Robert Gellately and Ian Kershaw. During this essay both sides will be evaluated with the idea of popularity at the forefront and how each argument adds or detracts from my argument that the Nazis were mainly a popular regime. Loyal reluctance can be described in this context as loyalty to the regime but reluctance to change in order to fit the image of the regime. For example a women wearing make up does not necessarily mean she is showing resistance or resistenz but is simply unwilling to change although she supports the regime in full. Up until 1936 conformity had a veneer of legality with the use of the Gestapo and the secret police. Evans used the term the sunny side of the regime (Kershaw, p. 13) to term 1933 to 1936. The Lucifer Effect By Philip Zimbardo Essay The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo, presents a significant question regarding the essence of human nature: How is it possible for typical, ordinary or even good natured people to become capable of perpetrating evil? While striving to understand unexpected, or abnormal behaviors, we tend to put our main focus on internal determinants such as genes, character, and personality, simultaneously ignoring external, situational factors that could be the central, critical catalyst for an apparent behavioral change. Typically, this catalyst lies in the system that creates and maintains such situations that result in questionable behaviors. Zimbardo confirms that the world is filled with good and evil. With that being said, the barrier between good and evil is permeable and nebulous. This leads the reader to this central question: Am I capable of evil? In order to answer this question, one must consider all internal, as well as, external elements of the given situation. In the recent years, the family structure has continued to change. There are more single parents in the society today as a result of divorce and separations. Consequently, this has contributed to an increase in the number of children brought up by single parents. The current changes in family structure have become an issue of public concern because of the effect it has on both the parents and children. It is evident that children who are brought up by two biological parents do well as compared to children raised by single parents. Biological parents in this case refer to married couples who relate to their children through blood (Bachman et al., 2012). The single parent can be a biological father or mother who takes care of the needs of his or her children. Two biological parents play an important role in providing the children with necessary support during younger age by employing various parenting styles and practices.
