Summary Of Gone By Anh Do
On page 3, the images displays four kids on the floor playing with some chickens. Since the book is
written by Anh Do in first person, we first assume that one of the 4 children in the picture is him.
Again to reinforce that assumption, the image is in sepia tone referring to the past. Something that is
different in the picture, is that it s drawn more cartoon like rather than a realistic form. The cartoon
form is a symbolism of childhood; Anh Do s childhood. The facial expression on the children look
happy. They seem like they were having fun playing with the chicken. Returning back to the two
previous pages, we see that Anh Do lived in a place of poverty but this page shows happy children.
This means that no matter the circumstances Anh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know there was despair and sadness because the images were in grey scale instead of sepia tone
representing a dark and depressing time for all Vietnamese people.
Anh s father and uncles served as soldiers in the war and since they were on the losing side of the war,
the had to move because their home and lives was no longer safe to live in Vietnam. The community
all knew they had to displace their country so they had to migrate to a country. Obviously this was a
huge impact on everyone in the community s lives since they had to leave their things behind and
abandon their home. Anh definitely loved his life in Vietnam but his family and him had no their
choice.
The war had to of been serious to not let Anh know, and it was. His parents or family never told him
about it because it wasn t just adults who died in battle, but also children, and so many people died.
His parents probably also thought that it wouldn t be best if he knew that his father s life was in great
danger.
The next page is about how they escaped their home. The whole community believed that they all
needed to flee from their home so they all gathered their money to buy a

South Africa s New Secrecy Bill Putting Country s...
South Africa is recognised internationally as a country passionate about upholding its democracy. Last
year however, the National Assembly decided to pass a condemned Secrecy Bill, two days prior to
Freedom Day, despite citizen s disapprovals. Was the event a mere coincidence or is our country s
democracy at stake?
The Secrecy Bill, formally known as the Protection of State Information Act, was introduced to
replace the apartheid era legislation. It is supposedly an improved legislation which serves to protect
sensitive or classified state information against unnecessary disclosure and destruction. It has been
noted by the media and even President Jacob Zuma himself that the Bill has some grey areas where
national interest remains too vague a reason for keeping information classified.
Furthermore, the Secrecy Bill restricts the media s access to government information, offering hefty
jail sentences to those who leak the secrets withheld by government. Is that a procedure to protect the
state of corruption in our country, or is it to protect the State itself?
As far as I am concerned, the Secrecy Bill acts against our constitutional rights. The South African
Constitution states that: Everyone has the right of access to any information held by the state. Along
with this, the Bill acts against the right to freedom of speech, as the media can no longer publish
articles freely. This means that journalists will no longer be able to investigate issues of fraud, theft

Westernization Is The Result Of The Contact Between...
Westernization is the result of the contact between western and non western cultures. Beginning in the
fifteenth century and playing out until the nineteenth century, colonialism and neo imperialism by
means of the Euro Atlantic economy s authority, played a major part in the spread of western culture.
For example, even after decolonizing and becoming their own countries with their own governance,
many former colonies adopted aspects of western politics, even if they firmly opposed other aspects of
western culture. Twentieth century and twenty first century globalization took various forms. In the
1950s, there was accelerated postwar globalization through American and European multinational
corporations, like McDonald s and mcdonaldization throughout the world. Then, beginning in 1970,
the rise of industrializing economies meant the international division of labor, with low wage and high
wage zones, and in the 1980s, the United States took on an important role in neoliberal globalization
through the Washington Consensus, a reform package designed by Washington D.C. comprised of a
set of specific economic policy prescriptions for critically economically unstable developing
countries, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. In 2000, globalization was
heightened through the emergence of the economies of countries including India, China, Brazil, and
Russia (the BRICs). In recent decades, as opposed to during colonial and recent post colonial times,

Not only did I get just a car, I had gotten the automobile I had always lusted after. In my driveway, a

The Pros and Cons of Prenatal Screening Essay
Child is a gift from God. Every parent hopes for a healthy child. However, abnormalities in the fetus
growth becoming common nowadays. These may be due to physical, radiation and chemical factors.
These factors will cause deformities such as genetic mutation which causes mental retardation,
abnormal body buildup and other conditions which bring a lot of troubles in the future to the child
themselves and their parents. Modern technologies and innovations in the medical field had developed
a method to detect the abnormality before delivery and prevent this future tragedy to happen. This
method is known as prenatal screening. There are several advantages and disadvantages of prenatal
screening.
Prenatal screening is a test to detect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When parents know the fetus is special , they may be chosen to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, in
general prenatal screening helps to detect congenital disabilities but is also thought to be the remedy
selective abortion (Seller, 1976).
One of the benefits of prenatal screening is to enable early detection of the developmental defect
embryology. This embryology developmental defect may be due to the mutation or genetic
inheritance. Mutation is a condition characterized by permanent change in the DNA sequence that
makes up a gene. It can range in different sizes from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a
large segment of a chromosome. On the other hand, genetic inheritance is a condition whereby parents
pass traits such as height and other characteristics to the children by chromosomes. Sonograms,
genetic tests and a new test called pre implantation genetic diagnosis which is a genetic test conducted
on embryos for people attempting pregnancy through in vitro fertilization allow women to better
predict if the infant will have a genetic defect (New York Times Magazine, 2006). Thus thorough
these tests, medical practitioners are able to identify and make early preparation toward any
abnormalities of the fetus.
Besides that, prenatal screening also improves lives. This is because prenatal screening is able to
prevent abnormalities which bring difficulties in human life. At this time, no regulations ... prenatal

Harmonic Compensation by PV-STATCOM
For emolument of current harmonics (if any), the instantaneous resoluteness of different active and
reactive powers is utilized the active and reactive powers are computed utilizing p q theory. No
restrictions are imposed on the voltage or current wave forms, and it can be applied to three phase
systems with or without a neutral wire for three phase generic voltage and current wave forms. Thus,
it is valid not only in steady state, but withal in transient states. The p q Theory first transforms
voltages and currents from the a b c to α β o coordinates, and then defines instantaneous power on
these coordinates. Hence, this theory always considers the three phase system as a unit, not a
superposition or sum of three single phase circuits. The p q Theory utilizes the α β o transformation,
additionally kenned as the Clarke transformation, which consists of an authentic matrix that
transforms three phase voltages and currents into the α β o stationary reference frames, given by:
[█(V_0@V_α@V_β )]=√3/2 [■(1/√2 1/√2 1/√2@1 1/√2 1/√3@0 √3/2 √3/2)][█(V_a@V_b@V_c )]
[█(i_L0@i_Lα@i_Lβ )]=√3/2 [■(1/√2 1/√2 1/√2@1 1/√2 1/√3@0 √3/2 √3/2)][█(i_La@i_Lb@i_Lc
)] By utilizing the α β o transformation the zero sequence component can be disunited from the a b c
phase components. The α and β axes make no contribution to zero sequence components. If the three
phase system has three wires (no neutral conductor), no zero sequence current components are present
and i0 can be eliminated

Waco Texas Standoff Summary
The Waco, Texas standoff is an example where poor crisis management skills increase the severity of
a situation, which did not need to escalate to that extent. This event raised many questions and
concerns such as their, lack of objectives, communicational skills, firearms legislation, and education
from the FBI, consequently leading to a catastrophic ending. Looking from a management
perspective, one of the first steps is to ensure there is a clear objective, and mission in mind. After
analyzing this article, it is clear that in relation to this event it appeared the FBI had no mission
statement, therefore, causing confusion for all the personnel involved. Moreover, the confusion may

In the article Law enforcement lessons from Hurricane Katrina it states how the local law enforcement
should take a greater responsibility when planning for a disaster. Law enforcement at a local level can
be considered the first line to a management team. They also know their city, or district, better than
any other agency; therefore, by having a plan already, it could reduce the panic and confusion for
civilians as well as, other agencies who provided assistance. By having a plan for a worst case
scenario whether that be physically training, or learning through disaster which had occurred in the
past, agencies could improve their efficiency during a crisis. One of the reasons it is crucial law
enforcement personnel receive this type of training is also because of the public. If the public see that
an agency they are supposed to rely on does not know what to do, it impacts the confidence they have
on that agency for future disasters. In conclusion, a way to implement an effective response is to focus
on local law enforcement agencies as they would be the first responders to a

Hot Spot Research Paper
A hot spot is fed by a region deep within the Earth s mantle from which heat rises through the process
of convection. This heat facilitates the melting of rock at the base of the lithosphere, where the brittle,
upper portion of the mantle meets the Earth s crust. The melted rock, known as magma, often pushes
through cracks in the crust to form volcanoes.
Hot spot volcanism is unique because it does not occur at the boundaries of Earth s tectonic plates,
where all other volcanism occurs. Instead it occurs at abnormally hot centers known as mantle plumes.
Scientific models depict these plumes of molten rock almost like a lava lamp, with a rising bulbous
head fed by a long, narrow tail that originates in the mantle. As the plume head reaches

Franz Kafka Influences
Franz Kafka is a Jewish, German writer born in the late 19th century (1883) in Prague and is well
known amongst the figures of 20th century literature. His most famous works include The
Metamorphisis, The Castle, Amerika and the book I read, The Trial. All of these works define Kakfa s
writing as writing that focuses on existential security, understanding, absurdity, and nihilism. Franz
Kafka was born into a middle class, but was not exempt from extreme tragedy. He had three sisters,
and by the time he was 6, both his younger brothers had died in their early childhood. Kafka also didn
t have a healthy relationship with his parents, especially his father. His mom wasn t very educated and
didn t share the amount of passion her son had for being a writer. But his father was far worse, he
controlled the household and was very restrictive for Kakfa s passion for art and writing. Kakfa seems
to mirror this personal experience in many of his novels, for example, in The Trial, the Court is so
powerful and oppressing that K. is completely helpless, The Castle also has the same type of entity
that mirrors Kafka s father and the tyrannical component of his personality. ... Show more content on

The Enron Scandal Of Enron
Public accounting firms have long played a role in convincing the public the authenticity of the
corporates financial statements. However, the public started to become skeptical about accountants
reliability when the Enron scandal occurred. In October 2001, SEC started an investigation against
Enron for improper accounting practice. According Sherron S. Watkins, the former vice president for
corporate development, Enron failed to disclose complicated deals with its partnerships to inflate the
stock price. In a report by Enron s law firm, Arthur Andersen, the accounting firm that was in charge
of auditing Enron, was involved and failed to report the partnership transactions, which resulted in the
collapse of Enron.

It is no doubt that Arthur Andersen (AA, hereinafter), Enron s auditing firm, have violated many laws
and rules prior to and during the investigation. Thus, our group does not believe there is anything that
could argue for them from an ethical point of view. From the case that we read, it is clear to everyone
that AA s senior level management knew most of the intentional misstatement in Enron s financials,
yet they still issued an audit report that does not include any of the information. Furthermore, when
SEC initiated the investigation over Enron, instead of cooperating with the SEC and turn in the
evidence of fraud, AA s Enron auditors shredded thousands of pages of evidence, made the entire
process much harder for SEC. Both actions are alterations of the general public s interests, and thus,
are unethical.
There are several things that could have helped to prevent the auditing fraud in the accounting
profession, and many of which have already been in effect following the Sarbanes Oxley Act. Most of
these actions are to increase the standard of independence in an auditing process. The main reason
why Arthur Andersen was not disclosing material misstatement in Enron s financial reports is due to
conflict of interests. As we know today, auditing firms are not to be providing consulting services to
remain independent. However, back in the days prior to the fall of

Why Did The Moon Landing Conspiracy

In 1969 NASA decided to send Apollo 11 astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael
Collins. Armstrong was the first to step foot on the moon, the other two came later. These moments
were captured on television cameras by Eagle. Armstrong took moon samples and photographs as
soon as he landed on the moon. The conspiracy theory claims that the elements of the moon landings

In 2009 the American patriot friend s network claimed that the landings helped the U.S. government
use the landings to distract the public from the Vietnam War. The landings ended around the same time
as the U.S. ended its involvement with the war. It is proven that the moon landings was in no relation
to the end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Many conspiracies claim that the landings did not happen
and that NASA employees have lied or say that the landings did happen but not in the way that has
been told. The public s whole idea was that the whole moon landing program was a hoax from the
beginning. Some claim that the technology that sends men to the moon was lacking or that the solar
flares or wind made the trip impossible. Conspiracists claim the landing are a hoax because of the
photos and films, the environment, mechanical issues, and transmissions. Conspiracists look mostly at
the pictures and films that were taken from the moon. They point out oddities. They say in some
pictures, crosshairs seem to be behind objects which is a sign of the picture being cropped or rotated
for aesthetic impact. The pictures quality seems to be implausibly high by many poor quality photos
taken by the Apollo astronauts and used high resolution. Lastly the conspiracists say that the photos

The Effects Of Radiation Exposure On Medical Radiation
Why is this a problem
About 15% of the ionizing radiation exposure to the people comes from man made sources and almost
all of these exposures are due to medical radiation, which is vastly from diagnostic and therapeutic
sources(9). Out of 3 mSv annual global per caput effective dose (2000), 2.4 mSv is from natural
background and 0.4 mSv from diagnostic medical exams(5,9). and since then many new therapeutic
and diagnostic methods have been implemented making the exposure dose due to medical radiation to
go up. The problem with this increase is that elevated risk of radiation related cancers such as of the
thyroid, salivary gland, central nervous system, skin, and breast as well as leukemia.(1,6) because of
these observed risks the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there are recommendations and guidelines they are modified by criteria where the patient is
at high risk for dental caries(9).
How to minimize dose
Dental X rays accounts for about 2.5 percent of the effective dose from all forms of medical
radiographs (75). As previously discussed, dental radiation exposure is low; but, it is the dentists
responsibility to follow the guidelines such as ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) and
ALADA (As Low as Diagnostically Acceptable) principles(3). Some of the ways that can that be
helpful in minimizing dosage are use of the fastest image receptor compatible with the diagnostic task
(F speed film or digital)(1), proper film exposure and processing techniques, collimation of the beam
to the size of the receptor, use of protective aprons and thyroid collars, (8) and limiting the number of
images obtained to the minimum necessary to obtain essential diagnostic information.
Frequency of exams
As previously mentioned Dental professionals need to carefully examine the patient health history,
oral clinical observation and caries risk assessment to determine if radiographs are necessary and keep
the exposure ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable). When it comes to determining caries, a
(child/adolescent) patient with clinical caries and increased risk will need Posterior bitewing exam at 6

Analysis of the Film American Beauty
American Beauty is a 1999 drama film that focuses on contemporary lives of individuals having
diverse personalities and identities. The movie and the main character Lester Burnham are aiming to
make us realise that life can be short therefore we should lead more meaningful lives. Through this, he
takes us one year back which summarises his life and those around him. Outward appearances can be
very deceiving as anyone can acquire superficial impressions. In this discussion, I will be examining
closely on a number of identities that is found in American Beauty .
In the film, the characters are in the search for what they believed was their happiness. Too focused on
finding what they deemed was happiness, they failed to consistently maintain coherent identities.
Lester Burnham, a husband and a father, who is the protagonist of the film, feels ambushed at home
and at work. He has little to no control of his life as his wife Carolyn strives to be the perfect
American family. Lester unleashes from being controlled when he meets his daughter s best friend,
Angela and sees her as a femme fatale and their neighbour s son, Ricky. Ricky introduces himself to
Lester on one of Carolyn s business social function and gets along immediately while sharing a joint.
Lester witnesses Ricky quit his job casually and was amazed: I think you just became my personal
hero. Meeting Ricky inspired Lester to re live his teenage years and he was happy of the outcome in
the beginning. Through

However, its argued that the improvement of females in education could be the result of the decline of
males, therefore making the gap between gender differences not that significant.
Secondly, the interaction between teachers and male and female students. Sociologist Francis (2000)
argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more frequently and
harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as
they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in
terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined
than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in school which may result in
gender and ethnic differences in achievement.
On the other hand, many sociologists have argued the importance of external factors in influencing
gender differences in achievement. Feminism strives for equality in society for men and women and
has questioned the typical role of males and females in society and challenges the role of women
being the housewife. Feminists have had a great influence on improving girls self esteem and
aspirations. Sue Sharpe s

The History of Fandoms
Fandoms are among the so called fabrics of culture that comprise our lives, regardless of our age,
gender, nationality, and whatever differences that we may have. Fanfiction Terminology defines a
fandom as the fan based community dedicated to a particular TV show or other cult inducing medium,
including movies, books, comics, and other source material (Common Fandom Terms 1). Someone
may be invested in collecting Beatles albums, and another person may have memorized every
character in the Marvel universe. Many people may be caught up in lamenting over episodes of Doctor
Who, while some may be disturbed yet thrilled by the storyline of Death Note. When these people
aggregate to enjoy particular media together, fandoms begin to expand.
Although fandoms are deemed in the vernacular as cool and modern , they actually date back to the
1880s when the fans of the Sherlock Holmes series mourned over the main character s death.
According to Fancyclopedia 3, an organization named First Fandom was created in 1959 to gather
science fiction fans (1). It is not a surprise that there are millions of established fandoms today,
especially since we are living in a world where the Information Explosion has already taken place.
The Fanfiction Statistics Website indicates that there are 6,600,000 registered titles in Fanfiction.Net,
which is an archive for written fanworks appropriately called fanfiction (1). In addition, Cassiopeia

Medullary Reticular Formation Essay
During REM sleep there are numerous output fibers from REM sleep triggering regions that go
towards the medial medullary reticular formation, some of which have synaptic contacts with the
neurotransmitter serotonin, that contain medullary neurons. The efferent pathway that connects to the
pontine REM regions, which have cells of the medial medullary reticular formation, may be important
for moderating sleep specific inhibitory or excitatory postsynaptic effects in motor neurons, and
silencing medullary serotonin containing cells. In the dorsomedial pontine, some axon terminals
emanate from there that make synaptic contacts with medullary reticular formation cells that dispatch
axons to the hypoglossal motor nucleus. These cells mediate REM sleep related inhibitory or

adversity to succeed. The two that stand out in my mind are Bill Gates and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Lets discuss their contributions to society as a whole, the problems or issues that they resolved, and
how they were able to come up with their solutions.

demise of the Soviet Union. Dr Martin, L. K.,Jr. (1992, Jan 20).
Personal Environments
Bill Gates first took an interest in computer programming when he was 13 years old, while attending
school. The school used funds from sales and donations and was able to purchase the students an ASR

intrigued, was able to get excused from his regular classes to work with the computer. Bill, then,
gained his interest in computer programming. He was able to develop a program where the students
could play the computer in a game of tic tac toe. This was the beginning of Bill Gates career (Bill
Gates, 2011).
Bill Gates mother, Mary had devoted most of her time working with charities and civil affairs
organizations, the most popular name being United Way. She would bring Bill with her on many
volunteer missions. Bill Gates would grow up to follow her example, only he would have the money
to donate and even create his own organizations and foundations (Bill Gates, 2011).

1)Relations between Thailand and Philippines:
The bilateral relations between Thailand and Philippines will continue to be strengthened through
talks and agreements on economic, trades and security. (The Philstar, 2012). Johanna (2012) reported
that the previous JCBC had led to an agreement between Thailand and Philippines governments to set

Retrograde Amnesia Essay
Retrograde Amnesia, being a common type of Amnesia, is the one most people are familiar with.
(King, 2016) Retrograde Amnesia is the loss of past memories. If someone falls and hits their head,
the damage caused by that accident could cause the person to forget that the accident even occurred.
(Pg. 234) For example, a friend once decided to try snowboarding, and did not learn how to stop
before she went to the top of the hill. She went down, picking up speed, and did not notice the small
cliff at the bottom until it was too late to turn away. She decided to fall so she would not go over the
cliff, and while she was successful at that, she unfortunately hit her head on a patch of ice as she fell.
She remained conscience, but lost not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, she could not tell you what she had just finished eating, where she was, or what year it was.
Her fall had caused Anterograde Amnesia, and she could no longer make new memories.
Her Doctors decided that the damage was extensive, and with her age, there was no chance of her
regaining her ability to create new memories. We also discovered what looked like damage caused by
a stroke, which had gone unnoticed by us. Before the fall, she had some difficulty remembering recent
events, which was most likely caused by damage from the stroke. When she fell, more damage
occurred in the same area, leaving her with Anterograde Amnesia. Both of those events damaged the
part of the brain that encodes. Without the ability to encode, she could no longer make new memories.
(King, 2016 Pg. 233,234) Where Does Memory Loss Occur?
Since memory is layered, loss can occur in many different areas. (King, 2016 Pg. 216, 217) In
Retrograde Amnesia, long term memory is what is affected. Long term memory is more permanent
than any other type of memory. It allows for lasting memories, that can sometimes be stored for life.
Long term is complex, and the brain uses many components in order to successfully create memories

Comparing and Contrasting Shelley s Frankenstein with...
Comparing and Contrasting Shelley s Frankenstein with Brook s Young Frankenstein
The 1818 book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the 1972 movie Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks
both portray the differences in feminism regarding the cultural times through the character of
Elizabeth. When Mary Shelley wrote the book Frankenstein, she was on a mission to pursue equal
rights in education for her daughter. In Shelley s time, the only way to show feminine empowerment
was to be literate and well poised, which readers can see in certain passages featuring Elizabeth in
Shelley s book. In the 1970 s, when the movie Young Frankenstein was made, female empowerment
was emphasized with a movement called lipstick feminism , which encouraged women to ... Show

By Elizabeth being so engrossed in keeping a good appearance and not even hug or kiss her husband
goodbye, she demonstrates that she is more important than any man, even her lover. Also in this scene,
her voice is noticeably louder than Frankenstein s as she proclaims her love for him, hinting that
because he is so captivated by her beauty, she has the upper hand, a common trait sought to be
depicted by many women in the 70 s. Just like in the novel, Elizabeth takes a backseat during most of
the plot but obviously misses her soon to be husband, just as the novel Elizabeth did. Contrastingly,
the film s Elizabeth is able to make a trip to Europe to see Frankenstein and to be with him. However,
when she arrives, she is seduced by the monster. This act demonstrates Elizabeth s free will and
unwillingness to hold back her feelings due to a societal norm that she must stay with the man who
she has been engaged to, as it is her personal choice to be with the Creature. As the audience
discovers, Elizabeth is truly only attracted to and falls in love with the Creature because he is
physically well endowed and attractive. Lipstick Feminism shows that outward sexuality empowers
women, which is probably what was demonstrated with the love story between Elizabeth and the
Creature. Elizabeth and the Creature end up marrying, again portraying her free will and ability to
break away from cultural standards with

Killing Rommel Book Report
Killing Rommel Killing Rommel by Steven Pressfield tells the story about an elite British commando
unit, the Long Range Desert Group, and their mission to roam the North African desert. The mission
was to stop Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Corps during World War II. Rommel, also
known as the Desert Fox , was a German army general that Hitler could rely on for almost any
mission given his exceptional tactics on the battlefield. Pressfield presents the story as a first person
account memoir of a fictional citizen soldier who goes by Lieutenant Lawrence Chapman, a British
Eighth Army officer. Chapman is later selected to be a part of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG)
in 1942. Pressfield states how he did his best not to alter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One fact that stood out to me was early on in the book when he described the heat situation inside of
an army tank and said, For every degree Fahrenheit rise outside, interior temperature rose a degree and
a half. Seventy out was 100 in... (16). This is astonishing to me that the troops were in the desert with
100 degree weather and roasting in their tanks at 130 degrees. The novel flows nicely, beginning with
how Chapman describing his journey to the LRDG. It unravels the mission, he and his comrades were
ordered to do in the heat of World War II. There is no doubt that Pressfield wanted to keep the story in
first person to account for the events in Chap s memoir. He states in the prologue that it was in his best
interest to keep as much as he could directly as Chap wrote while making it as easy to read as
possible. This book is a work of fiction, but it incorporates many facts and real people. I think he did a
fantastic job. There is a few confusing spots throughout the book when it gets into the technical stuff.
One example is trying to keep track of all the different army divisions. There was never a time I was

Characteristics Of Batman
Batman a true American hero There are numerous things that can construct an American hero in today
s society, maybe they are really strong, intelligent or they are just a tremendous role model plenty of
people believe that heroes require superpowers in order to be a true superhero, but not necessarily
heroes could occasionally just be an ordinary everyday person like a firefighter, policeman, EMT or
someone like a veteran or maybe even for some people their hero just might be their mother, father,
aunt, uncle or grandparents. Batman symbolizes American heroism because he is courageous,
intelligente and he has both physical and mental strength. The first reason Batman shows that he is an
American hero is because he shows that he is courageous. For example Batman shows he is
courageous when he allows the Joker to handcuff him and put him into a shark tank and then at that
point he is forced to wrestle a shark. According to a video published about three years ago by DC

What Makes Donald Trump A Good President
There s a reason we don t let brand new pilots in the left seat of passenger jets. They might look like
they know how to fly, but really they only know how to crash. And there s a reason that if Donald
Trump is elected president, he will destroy America s foundation.
The Ig Nobel Prize is given to those who make earth shattering observations which on their face are
hilariously funny, but deeply true just the same. Justin Kruger and David Dunning won theirs in 2000
for a paper entitled Unskilled and unaware of it: How difficulties in recognizing one s own
incompetence lead to inflated self assessements. The entire paper can be summed up with this one

Village Voice reporter Wayne Barrett wrote this about Trump in 1979:
Trump s problem is not so much what he s done, but how he s done it. I decided at the start that I
wanted to profile him by describing his deals not his lifestyle or his personality. After getting to know
him, I realized that his deals are his life. He once told me: I won t make a deal just to make a profit. It
has to have flair. Another Manhattan developer said it differently: Trump won t do a deal unless there s
something extra a kind of moral larceny in it. He s not satisfied with a profit. He has to take something
more. Otherwise, there s no thrill.
The presidency is Trump s ultimate deal. Politics has run in the Trump family for a century. Spreading

Stephen Crane s Poem War Is Kind
Prompt: How does Stephen Crane s poem, War is Kind convey universal themes reflected in Civil War
literature? Universal themes help convey Stephen Crane s Poem, War is KInd . These themes are
common among civil war litatureare. Crane uses Warfare, Life at home, and Patriotism. He uses these
three themes because they can cover what happened and how people felt during the wars. There is also
an ironic tone to the poem because it is difficult to understand war being kind in any way. War is Kind
is a poem that focuses on the loss of three women who have lost their lover, father. And son in the war.
This expresses the the loss and sorrow that can come from a war. The speaker in the poem used irony

Educating Afghan Girls Education
Educating Afghan Girls
Education is one of the most important contributors to having a successful future. In developed
countries such as North America boys and girls are fortunate enough to have access to an unbiased
education system. Therefore, allowing children to have countless opportunities. However, in countries
like Afghanistan girls are marginalized and neglected the right to learn. Afghanistan is a country of
war, where women and girls are often the worst victims. In 2011, Afghanistan was known as the most
dangerous place in the world for a girl to be born (Kissane). Malala Yousufzai, a female education
activist was also a victim of war. Yousufazi was shot in the head and neck for advocating for girls and
their rights to have access to education. Similarly, to Yousufzai many women in Afghanistan stand up
for their entitlement to having equality. Those courageous women often become victims of abuse and
are often killed. Investing in girls education is critical, not only is it life altering for a girl s future, but
it s also poses benefits to society. By allowing Afghan girls access to educating we are also promoting
better socioeconomic s, a reduction in child marriages, and an improvement in mortality rates.
Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Three decades of war has subjected Afghans
to harsh living conditions. Leaving most with insufficient resources to survive. Many women are left
widowed, and are obligated to provide for their families,

Merging Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social...
The two theories I have decided to merge are Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social
Bond Theory. I picked General Strain Theory because it does a good job at discussing some of the
things that can trigger the release of a person s negative emotions which in turn may lead to deviant
behavior. I also decided to write about Social Bond Theory because it describes some of the factors
that keep people from committing crime. Both of the theories have strengths and weaknesses
individually, but when merged they help fill in each other s gaps. (Agnew, 2011; Hirschi, 2011) +1

or it was stolen. Anyone who has lost their cell phone has experienced the first type of strain. Agnew
plainly describes the strain as a result when individual s lose something good (Agnew, 2011. p. 190).
The description Agnew gives comes off as being ambiguous and incomplete. Arguably, the strain of
losing something good can be interpreted a certain way by someone and a completely different way by
another person. A perfect example would be a drug dealer losing his cocaine. According to this theory
he is more apt to commit a deviant act to get his cocaine back. Obviously the problem here is the fact
that he was already committing a crime before the strain ever took place. On the other, a victim of
identity theft has their entire savings wiped out. Consequently, due to their desperate need for money
they become a prostitute. In this case the theory seems to hold true. The scenarios above appear to be
completely different in all but two ways. The two ways in which they are similar are they both lost
something important to them. The word good is not defined by what society approves or disapproves
of. What s considered to be good is based on the individual s own definition. The second similarity is
that their loss triggered negative emotions such as anger, depression, and frustration. In these two
similarities the core concept of General

Societal Values Of The Puritans
The Puritans have been portrayed to be a society which lives based on values, and very strict
interpretations of those values. Societal values revolve around the Puritan religion, with the main idea
being that God had made a covenant with their people to live according to the Scripture and to set an
example for other societies to follow. With God s covenant in mind, the Puritans lived a very
straightforward, yet tense life. Through Puritan literature, it is clear the lives of the Puritans were
based around the covenant between God and the society, with any mistakes leading to punishment and
fear within the people causing the inevitable demise of Puritan society. The Puritans lived a life in
which there was a very fine line between what was agreeing with God s covenant, and what was going
against the agreement. Much of the actions taken by the Puritans was not to help themselves, but
rather to please God. In their voyage to Cape Cod, the Puritans were faced with many challenges, yet
they never backed down, because it was God s will they succeed, So they committed themselves to the
will of God and resolved to proceed, (Bradford , Of Plymouth Plantation (26)). Because the Puritan s
believed God s strong assertion for their society to succeed and to follow through on the covenant,
they kept sailing until the ship landed at Cape Cod. Moreover, the passengers and sailors on the ship
were faced with fear that if they failed to reach the New World, it would be a failure on

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Essay
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
While the first seasons of Buffy are structured around an external threat seeking to corrupt the order of
the world, later the source of the threat becomes increasingly internal, and the characters must
embrace a side of themselves which is evil, irrational, or dangerous. When Giles kills an arguably
innocent Ben, he does not suffer the moral ambiguity that Willow encounters when she kills a guilty
Warren. Willow has to deal with an evil internal to her in a way Giles does not, and this apparent
discrepancy is the result of a general evolution of the series, rather than a double standard.
The murder of Ben is comparable to the murder of Warren, even though Ben is mostly innocent and
Warren is mostly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the Scooby gang doesn t know about any of these things and, even though Dawn obviously knows
that Ben is a weak and, by virtue of the circumstances, treacherous human being because of his
weakness, Giles certainly has no knowledge of any of Ben s immoral actions when he kills him. Giles
is acting on the assumption that Ben is completely innocent but powerless to stop Glory, should she
ever wish to return for purposes of payback. Giles realizes that something needs to be done and that
whoever does it will be incurring feelings of guilt otherwise he would have left Buffy to do it. By
saving her from the act of murder, Giles acknowledges the moral ambiguity of the act itself, the
(apparent) innocence of Ben, and the inevitability of guilt for whoever happens to do what, in Giles
view, has to be done. (Similarly, he would have killed Dawn, if he had to). But, we notice, feelings of
guilt never come, and the ambiguity of this act never surfaces (script directions describe Giles
during/after the murder this way: Giles expression never changes ). Giles objectifies the evil it is not
in him, but he is merely the carrier, the means for an act which must be done, one way or another.
In contrast, when Willow kills Warren, a situation uncannily similar (i.e., a Scooby killing a human)
results in entirely different moral consequences. Warren also, presumably, deserves to be killed, and,

Listeria Monocytogenes
Description
Listeria monocytogenes is a gram positive motile facultative anaerobe that inhabits a variety of
environments. Using selective media it can be readily isolated from soil, water, vegetation and
processed products, including ready to eat products designated for human consumption (Graves et al.,
1992). The bacterium was named monocytogenes because one distinguish characteristic of infection in
rabbits, which was the production of monocytosis in blood (Shuin et al., 1982).
L. monocytogenes is phychrophilic, has a temperature for growth of 0°C to 45°C (Barbosa et al.,

contaminated after pasteurization and stored under refrigeration may achieve very high populations of
L. monocytogenes after one week; Furthermore, temperature abuse may enhance the multiplication of

temperature fluctuations, ability to multiply at refrigeration temperature and salt tolerance. During
manufacturing process, L. monocytogenes is primarily concentrate in the cheese curd, with only a
very small portion of cells appearing in the whey. Then, during ripening of the cheese, the numbers of
cells may increase (Camembert), decrease gradually (Colby or cheddar), or decrease rapidly (blue
cheese) and then stabilize. In addition, cooked and ready to eat meat and poultry products have been
implicated as the source of sporadic and epidemic listeriosis on several occasions in North America
and Europe (Schwartz et al., 1989). L. monocytogenes attaches strongly to the surface of raw meats
and is difficult to remove or inactivate. The multiplication in meat and poultry depends on the type of
meat, pH, and the type of cell populations of competitive flora (Farber et al., 1999). However, it has
been shown that poultry supports the growth of L. monocytogenes better than other meats.

Energy Crises in Pakistan
Energy crises is one of the major issues in our country pakistan. According to a survey 8% of the total
revenue generated by a telecom company is lost due to outage of power supplied to BTS. Although the
BTS has back up systems installed which are uninterrupted power supply and generator. When the
main power supply of the BTS fails, it shifts to UPS, if the failure presists for longer time the BTS
shifts to generator. With all the equipments installed to avoid power failure the BTS power outage is
very high. When the BTS power dies out that particular cell is out of the global communication
network. In urban areas this phase is for a short period of time but in rural far off areas this problem is
for long time unless someone comes to fix it. On observing, the power outage occurs due to lack of
power monitoring systems. The system demands for a continuous monitoring of the power of the BTS
so that when any one of the source dies out the service providers should fix it as soon as possible. In
urban areas the revneue generated is very high and a particular company can afford alot of man power
to monitor the BTS continuously but in rural areas the revenue generated is low and continuous

Epicurus And John Stuart Mill
In part one of our book, The Good Life, we studied five different philosopher s viewpoints on what is
needed in order for a person to have a good, fulfilling life. They all included the concepts of pleasure
and happiness to some extent in their theories, but they all approached the ideas in different ways. The
two hedonists we studied, Epicurus and John Stuart Mill, place heavy emphasis on the importance of
pleasure. They both believe that pleasure is a necessity in the ideal life. Jean Kazez agreed with their
viewpoints in her theory and said that happiness was a necessity for a good life. Epicurus and Mill
also argue that there is nothing else that we ultimately desire beyond pleasure and that it is an intrinsic
good. According to hedonism, pleasure is the most important good and the ultimate goal in life.
Epicurus states that pleasure is in intrinsic good. Mill agrees with him, but along with Kazez, says that
happiness is also an elemental good. In Epicurus theory, he defines pleasure as the absence of pain.
Mill also uses this definition, but applies it to happiness as well. Therefore, we can agree on a
definition for the two terms that makes sense: happiness and pleasure are both the absence of pain.
According to Mill, happiness and pleasure are correlated. He says that happiness is the existence of
pleasure. This is what drives all of our actions and desires. We desire things because it will bring us
pleasure in some way and we avoid things because

Essay On Plastic Recycling
a significant increase in the cost recycling the plastic, and the resulting product will have lower market
value due to lower quality.
Recycling plastic generally is more energy efficient than creating new plastic. Over 1000 gallons of
gasoline is saved by recycling one ton of plastic. The liquefaction of polyolefins actually produces
new oil stock that are used in other manufacturing, as well as several marketable byproducts such as
diesel fuel, burnable fuel, and HCL.
Plastic recycling becomes more profitable as the cost of oil rises. In the 1970 s, fears of limited oil
supplies led to a significand demand for plastic recycling. In California and some other locations, the
government requires recycling, and provides access to constant streams of plastic that allow for more
plastic recycling plants to run continuously. In crowded areas, such as japan, limited access to natural
resources leads to high value of recycled plastic products produced locally.
Research and development
A company called Ak Inovex is developing a new process of recycling plastics that does not use water
to clean the plastic. The process also uses less electricity, and creates a higher quality product. The
new process is used to recycle Styrofoam, polystyrene and ABS, which are often sent to landfills
instead of being recycled. The new method of recycling utilizes chemical solvents and special devices
that cool the plastic forming plastic beads. Over 90 percent of plastic types can be recycled with

Plain View Doctrine
The plain view doctrine permits an officer to seize evidence without a warrant, if the officer is in a
legal position to see the evidence (Hall, 2015). In my police academy law classes our instructors
would state right to be, right seize. The plain view doctrine relies on the following elements for a
warrantless seizure to be lawful, which includes the officer must lawfully be in an area from which the
object to be seized is in plain view, and the officer does in fact, identify the item (Hall, 2015, p. 424).
Additionally, the officer possesses probable cause to believe the object is connected to a crime, and the
officer has a right to access object itself. The officer may not manipulate something with the intent of

What lips my lips have kissed by Edna St. Vincent Millay
While reading What lips my lips have kissed by Edna St. Vincent Millay, I realized many things about
myself. The first thing was that I, after thinking I would never be able to decipher one word of poetry,
actually could. I also found that I was able to enjoy it. Another thing was that the narrator (whom I felt
was a woman no man could portray these feelings like a woman) and I had strikingly similar feelings.
There happened to be many other amazing findings, but these two were the first and most important to
me.
Yes, learning that I could truly enjoy poetry was an amazing, but also, a highly involved discussion.
One I would rather focus on at another time. I would, though, ... Show more content on

All of them seem to be just one clump of a mess that has made me who I am today. It makes me feel
very sad knowing that I used to be an innocent girl who knew only that she wanted to one day fall in
love with the man of her dreams, get married and have children. Basically she wanted the fairy tale
ending. Now, as I approach the ripe old age of twenty four, I can see that there is a reason why it is
called a fairy tale. It doesn¡¯t happen. Not unless your name is Cinderella and you were born in the
land of Disney.
I must assure you that I am a very happy woman. I am successful at my profession, I am, or in the
process of getting to a higher level of education, and I am very confidant.
What I am trying to explain is that I have seen a lot of bad things happen in relationships with men.
Yes, some have been good, for a little while. Yet I feel that I have wasted so much time on trying to
find ¡°Mr. Right¡± but I have been through so many ¡°Mr. Wrong¡¯s¡± I can¡¯t even remember their
faces, let alone their names. They all seem like one big enormous ¡°Mr. Wrong¡±. And even if I could,
none of them really meant something to me. I might have felt that at one point I had loved one of
them, but where has that ¡°great love¡± gone? Was it ever really there? Will I ever feel it again? Do I
even want to bother?
I believe that Edna St. Vincent Millay portrays the idea that yes, at one point she remembers

The 1910 s-The Origins
1910 s The Origins Speedo® originated in 1914 under the brand name Fortitude , which was taken
from the motto on the clan MacRae crest. It didn t become known by its now famous brand name until
1928. The company was started by a young Scot called Alexander MacRae, who migrated to Australia
in 1910, and set up an underwear manufacture business called MacRae Hosiery manufacturers. In
response to the growing beach culture in Australia, MacRae quickly expanded his operations to
include swimwear and changed the company name to MacRae Knitting Mills. 1920 s Creating a
Classic During the 1920 s the swimwear market grew rapidly, thanks to the acceptance of swimming
as a sport and a more liberal attitude towards mixed bathing. 1928 MacRae introduced

How Does The Valley Of Ashes Symbolize In The Great Gatsby
Symbolism appears in many forms of art including literature, music, and art. Symbols represent a
meaning that is not clearly stated by the author. The novel represents everyday objects and a location
that contributes to the story through the characters actions. The symbols do not directly affect the
characters however, they influence the characters action. The characters in The Great Gatsby mention
the items throughout the novel and describe how those connect to their actions. They represent many
of the character s stories as well as the development of the plot. Three symbols that are mentioned in
the novel are the underdeveloped place that represents society, the billboard to represent the watcher
and judge of the characters, and the green ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The green light at the end of a dock is mentioned in the novel at the end of the first chapter as well as
the end of the novel. The light is also mentioned along with Jay Gatsby, a character that Nick
befriended in the novel. The green light is explained by Nick when he says, Gatsby believed in the
green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that s no
matter to morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... (Fitzgerald 180). To explain, the
green light is a goal that will disappear over time but will remain in the person s mind. On the
contrary, the light also represents the possibility to pursue a dream that one has made despite the
setbacks. This represents symbolism by having a light to represent a person s hopes and dreams in
addition to pursuing a dream. The light does not directly represent a dream but rather the
representation because of the distance and the devotion to reach towards the light. To conclude, the
green light at the end of a dock s representation demonstrates the difficulty to achieve a goal and the
devotion to obtain

Essay on John Coltrane
John Coltrane: An Experimental Musician
Jazz, which evolved from African American folk music, has developed and changed over the last
century to become an art form in America. It places particular importance on inventive self
interpretation. Rather than relying on a written piece, the artist improvises. Jazz has taken many forms
over the past seventy years; there is almost always a single person who can be credited with the
evolution of that sound. From Thelonius Monk, and his bebop, to Dizzy Gillespie s big band, to Miles
Davis cool jazz, or to John Coltrane s free jazz; America s music has been developed and refined
countless times through individual experimentation and innovation. In my opinion the most
noteworthy artist in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Upon his return from Hawaii a year later, Coltrane launched his music career. In the late nineteen
forties, Coltrane began playing with several different R amp;B groups in small bars and clubs around
Philadelphia. Many of the clubs had a tradition of walking the bar (to walk on top of the bar while
playing one s instrument). Coltrane was embarrassed having to go through this custom every night.
This give him a negative image about himself and is abilities His self esteem was crushed even further
when critics said his music was too bizarre. Soon Coltrane became very depressed, and searching for a
way out, he turned to heroin. Heroin was a very popular drug among black musicians in the forties. It
was a form of escape that, at first, brought them together, but in the end triggered lives and careers to
collapse.
Coltrane was invited to play in Dizzy Gillespie s his big band in 49. Gillespie had been a very
significant figure in the bebop movement. Bebop was a style of jazz, popular during the late thirties
and forties. It was characterized by integrating faster tempos, and more complex phrases than the jazz
of earlier years. Gillespie s band offered

Childhood Obesity Is A Common Problem
Childhood obesity is a medical condition of being overweight or obese. This condition has continued
to grow and increase over the past five decades. In the US alone there are more than three million
cases per year. For one to be obese it means that the individual is significantly overweight for their age
and height. The way to tell if someone is obese or overweight is by a BMI, which stands for body
mass index. Being overweight is defined as having a BMI that is at or above the 85th percentile to the
95th percentile for children and teens. Childhood obesity is a common problem in America today and
changes need to be done to save the future youth from having these health problems. Childhood
obesity has been around for a long time. It has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another reason being lifestyle that is taught to children by their parents. Some blame can be put onto
parents if they do not lead their children into an active healthy lifestyle. Many children tend to either
live a vigorously active lifestyle or sedentary lifestyle, which is greatly influenced by their parents. A
bad habit in diet can also induce the chances of childhood obesity. For example, Beverages such as
sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and whole fat milks are leading sources of added sugars and solid
fats, respectively, in the diets of US children and contribute nearly one fifth of total caloric intake.
(Ford and Popkin, 47 53) This explains how many sugary drinks are incorporated into young children
s diets and can be very unhealthy for them. Most children love sugary drinks, but these drinks can
have a negative impact on their diet causing them to gain unwanted excess weight. One way to help
this is by monitoring the amount of sugar a day they consume. For example, One of the best strategies
to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the eating and exercise habits of your entire family.
(Sandhya) This shows how small changes in children s diets and lifestyle could result in many
beneficial outcomes for children who suffer from this. Childhood obesity has received many efforts of
improvement, but hasn t had enough results. Many businesses

Nebulas Research Papers
Have you ever looked up at the sky on a clear night and wondered, what else is out there? . What
could possibly lie beyond the beautiful blanket of stars that we see with our naked eye? Nebulas are
one of many galactic phenomena that lie beyond the Kuiper belt. Mysterious and fascinatingly
beautiful sights to behold, they have more of a purpose than just painting the galaxy backdrop with
color. I m not a diehard fan of astronomy and to be perfectly honest I find it difficult to follow most of
the information I have learned. However, when I came across pictures and information on nebulas I
was instantly fascinated. From how and why they re formed, to what they do for the galaxy, I m
excited to take you on an intellectual journey though nebulas.
At first glance, one might think that nebulas are made of light and that they have no ... Show more

This however, is far from the truth. Previously it was believed that the dark areas in the sky were just
blank spaces between the stars, however it is now known that these blank spaces aren t so blank after
all (Koupelis p.367). Astronomers have discovered that they are in fact large clouds of dust, or
interstellar dust to be precise, that instead block out the light from the stars behind it (Koupelis p.367).
The term nebula has its origin in the adjective nebulous, which means lacking definite form or limits
(Koupelis p.370). Much like the clouds that we see here on Earth, nebulas also come in all shapes and
sizes. Per scientists, nebulas are defined as being an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium, and
other ionized gases (Wikipedia). These large areas of dust and other particles thrive in an area known
as the interstellar medium and are formed when the interstellar medium goes through a gravitational
collapse (Universe). It s during this

  • 2. Summary Of Gone By Anh Do On page 3, the images displays four kids on the floor playing with some chickens. Since the book is written by Anh Do in first person, we first assume that one of the 4 children in the picture is him. Again to reinforce that assumption, the image is in sepia tone referring to the past. Something that is different in the picture, is that it s drawn more cartoon like rather than a realistic form. The cartoon form is a symbolism of childhood; Anh Do s childhood. The facial expression on the children look happy. They seem like they were having fun playing with the chicken. Returning back to the two previous pages, we see that Anh Do lived in a place of poverty but this page shows happy children. This means that no matter the circumstances Anh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We know there was despair and sadness because the images were in grey scale instead of sepia tone representing a dark and depressing time for all Vietnamese people. Anh s father and uncles served as soldiers in the war and since they were on the losing side of the war, the had to move because their home and lives was no longer safe to live in Vietnam. The community all knew they had to displace their country so they had to migrate to a country. Obviously this was a huge impact on everyone in the community s lives since they had to leave their things behind and abandon their home. Anh definitely loved his life in Vietnam but his family and him had no their choice. The war had to of been serious to not let Anh know, and it was. His parents or family never told him about it because it wasn t just adults who died in battle, but also children, and so many people died. His parents probably also thought that it wouldn t be best if he knew that his father s life was in great danger. The next page is about how they escaped their home. • 3. South Africa s New Secrecy Bill Putting Country s... South Africa is recognised internationally as a country passionate about upholding its democracy. Last year however, the National Assembly decided to pass a condemned Secrecy Bill, two days prior to Freedom Day, despite citizen s disapprovals. Was the event a mere coincidence or is our country s democracy at stake? The Secrecy Bill, formally known as the Protection of State Information Act, was introduced to replace the apartheid era legislation. It is supposedly an improved legislation which serves to protect sensitive or classified state information against unnecessary disclosure and destruction. It has been noted by the media and even President Jacob Zuma himself that the Bill has some grey areas where national interest remains too vague a reason for keeping information classified. Furthermore, the Secrecy Bill restricts the media s access to government information, offering hefty jail sentences to those who leak the secrets withheld by government. Is that a procedure to protect the state of corruption in our country, or is it to protect the State itself? As far as I am concerned, the Secrecy Bill acts against our constitutional rights. The South African Constitution states that: Everyone has the right of access to any information held by the state. Along with this, the Bill acts against the right to freedom of speech, as the media can no longer publish articles freely. This means that journalists will no longer be able to investigate issues of fraud, theft and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Westernization Is The Result Of The Contact Between... Westernization is the result of the contact between western and non western cultures. Beginning in the fifteenth century and playing out until the nineteenth century, colonialism and neo imperialism by means of the Euro Atlantic economy s authority, played a major part in the spread of western culture. For example, even after decolonizing and becoming their own countries with their own governance, many former colonies adopted aspects of western politics, even if they firmly opposed other aspects of western culture. Twentieth century and twenty first century globalization took various forms. In the 1950s, there was accelerated postwar globalization through American and European multinational corporations, like McDonald s and mcdonaldization throughout the world. Then, beginning in 1970, the rise of industrializing economies meant the international division of labor, with low wage and high wage zones, and in the 1980s, the United States took on an important role in neoliberal globalization through the Washington Consensus, a reform package designed by Washington D.C. comprised of a set of specific economic policy prescriptions for critically economically unstable developing countries, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. In 2000, globalization was heightened through the emergence of the economies of countries including India, China, Brazil, and Russia (the BRICs). • 5. World Literature And Composition B1 Henry Schineller Howe World Literature and Composition B1 5 October, 2016 Clutch Push in the clutch in, ease off the gas, shift gears, let the clutch out, foot back on the gas. To one, the task of driving a car with a manual transmission appears easy on paper. Anyone who has gone through the arduous process of learning this skill will state the contrary. This act , which seems to be a simple task of mindless movements of muscle memory, truly is a feat of deftness and finesse. If you place a new driver behind the wheel, this already difficult task seems impossible and daunting. For my seventeenth birthday, I got the one gift that I had desired for as ever since I could say the word car . Not only did I get just a car, I had gotten the automobile I had always lusted after. In my driveway, a dark grey metallic Subaru WRX stood before me. Single turbo four cylinder boxer engine, symmetrical all wheel drive, quad exhaust, it truly was the perfect gateway into the vast world of high performance cars for a young enthusiast. I could not have been happier. The irony was that I could not drive it yet . The car had a six speed manual gearbox and I had barely mastered operating an automatic. I assumed that with all of the Forza and Need For Speed I had played, hours of videos I had watched, and my general knowledge of the mechanics of a car that this skill would come to me naturally. I was sorely mistaken. It was cool fall morning and we had taken my car to one of my baseball ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Pros and Cons of Prenatal Screening Essay Child is a gift from God. Every parent hopes for a healthy child. However, abnormalities in the fetus growth becoming common nowadays. These may be due to physical, radiation and chemical factors. These factors will cause deformities such as genetic mutation which causes mental retardation, abnormal body buildup and other conditions which bring a lot of troubles in the future to the child themselves and their parents. Modern technologies and innovations in the medical field had developed a method to detect the abnormality before delivery and prevent this future tragedy to happen. This method is known as prenatal screening. There are several advantages and disadvantages of prenatal screening. Prenatal screening is a test to detect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When parents know the fetus is special , they may be chosen to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, in general prenatal screening helps to detect congenital disabilities but is also thought to be the remedy selective abortion (Seller, 1976). One of the benefits of prenatal screening is to enable early detection of the developmental defect embryology. This embryology developmental defect may be due to the mutation or genetic inheritance. Mutation is a condition characterized by permanent change in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene. It can range in different sizes from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a large segment of a chromosome. On the other hand, genetic inheritance is a condition whereby parents pass traits such as height and other characteristics to the children by chromosomes. Sonograms, genetic tests and a new test called pre implantation genetic diagnosis which is a genetic test conducted on embryos for people attempting pregnancy through in vitro fertilization allow women to better predict if the infant will have a genetic defect (New York Times Magazine, 2006). Thus thorough these tests, medical practitioners are able to identify and make early preparation toward any abnormalities of the fetus. Besides that, prenatal screening also improves lives. This is because prenatal screening is able to prevent abnormalities which bring difficulties in human life. At this time, no regulations ... prenatal screening guides parents and ... • 7. Harmonic Compensation by PV-STATCOM For emolument of current harmonics (if any), the instantaneous resoluteness of different active and reactive powers is utilized the active and reactive powers are computed utilizing p q theory. No restrictions are imposed on the voltage or current wave forms, and it can be applied to three phase systems with or without a neutral wire for three phase generic voltage and current wave forms. Thus, it is valid not only in steady state, but withal in transient states. The p q Theory first transforms voltages and currents from the a b c to α β o coordinates, and then defines instantaneous power on these coordinates. Hence, this theory always considers the three phase system as a unit, not a superposition or sum of three single phase circuits. The p q Theory utilizes the α β o transformation, additionally kenned as the Clarke transformation, which consists of an authentic matrix that transforms three phase voltages and currents into the α β o stationary reference frames, given by: [█(V_0@V_α@V_β )]=√3/2 [■(1/√2 1/√2 1/√2@1 1/√2 1/√3@0 √3/2 √3/2)][█(V_a@V_b@V_c )] [█(i_L0@i_Lα@i_Lβ )]=√3/2 [■(1/√2 1/√2 1/√2@1 1/√2 1/√3@0 √3/2 √3/2)][█(i_La@i_Lb@i_Lc )] By utilizing the α β o transformation the zero sequence component can be disunited from the a b c phase components. The α and β axes make no contribution to zero sequence components. If the three phase system has three wires (no neutral conductor), no zero sequence current components are present and i0 can be eliminated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This event raised many questions and concerns such as their, lack of objectives, communicational skills, firearms legislation, and education from the FBI, consequently leading to a catastrophic ending. Looking from a management perspective, one of the first steps is to ensure there is a clear objective, and mission in mind. After analyzing this article, it is clear that in relation to this event it appeared the FBI had no mission statement, therefore, causing confusion for all the personnel involved. In the article Law enforcement lessons from Hurricane Katrina it states how the local law enforcement should take a greater responsibility when planning for a disaster. Law enforcement at a local level can be considered the first line to a management team. They also know their city, or district, better than any other agency; therefore, by having a plan already, it could reduce the panic and confusion for civilians as well as, other agencies who provided assistance. By having a plan for a worst case scenario whether that be physically training, or learning through disaster which had occurred in the past, agencies could improve their efficiency during a crisis. One of the reasons it is crucial law enforcement personnel receive this type of training is also because of the public. If the public see that an agency they are supposed to rely on does not know what to do, it impacts the confidence they have on that agency for future disasters. In conclusion, a way to implement an effective response is to focus on local law enforcement agencies as they would be the first responders to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Hot Spot Research Paper A hot spot is fed by a region deep within the Earth s mantle from which heat rises through the process of convection. This heat facilitates the melting of rock at the base of the lithosphere, where the brittle, upper portion of the mantle meets the Earth s crust. The melted rock, known as magma, often pushes through cracks in the crust to form volcanoes. Hot spot volcanism is unique because it does not occur at the boundaries of Earth s tectonic plates, where all other volcanism occurs. Instead it occurs at abnormally hot centers known as mantle plumes. Scientific models depict these plumes of molten rock almost like a lava lamp, with a rising bulbous head fed by a long, narrow tail that originates in the mantle. As the plume head reaches ... • 11. Franz Kafka Influences Franz Kafka is a Jewish, German writer born in the late 19th century (1883) in Prague and is well known amongst the figures of 20th century literature. His most famous works include The Metamorphisis, The Castle, Amerika and the book I read, The Trial. All of these works define Kakfa s writing as writing that focuses on existential security, understanding, absurdity, and nihilism. Franz Kafka was born into a middle class, but was not exempt from extreme tragedy. He had three sisters, and by the time he was 6, both his younger brothers had died in their early childhood. Kafka also didn t have a healthy relationship with his parents, especially his father. His mom wasn t very educated and didn t share the amount of passion her son had for being a writer. But his father was far worse, he controlled the household and was very restrictive for Kakfa s passion for art and writing. Kakfa seems to mirror this personal experience in many of his novels, for example, in The Trial, the Court is so powerful and oppressing that K. is completely helpless, The Castle also has the same type of entity that mirrors Kafka s father and the tyrannical component of his personality. ... However, the public started to become skeptical about accountants reliability when the Enron scandal occurred. In October 2001, SEC started an investigation against Enron for improper accounting practice. According Sherron S. Watkins, the former vice president for corporate development, Enron failed to disclose complicated deals with its partnerships to inflate the stock price. In a report by Enron s law firm, Arthur Andersen, the accounting firm that was in charge of auditing Enron, was involved and failed to report the partnership transactions, which resulted in the collapse of Enron. It is no doubt that Arthur Andersen (AA, hereinafter), Enron s auditing firm, have violated many laws and rules prior to and during the investigation. Thus, our group does not believe there is anything that could argue for them from an ethical point of view. From the case that we read, it is clear to everyone that AA s senior level management knew most of the intentional misstatement in Enron s financials, yet they still issued an audit report that does not include any of the information. Furthermore, when SEC initiated the investigation over Enron, instead of cooperating with the SEC and turn in the evidence of fraud, AA s Enron auditors shredded thousands of pages of evidence, made the entire process much harder for SEC. Both actions are alterations of the general public s interests, and thus, are unethical. There are several things that could have helped to prevent the auditing fraud in the accounting profession, and many of which have already been in effect following the Sarbanes Oxley Act. Most of these actions are to increase the standard of independence in an auditing process. The main reason why Arthur Andersen was not disclosing material misstatement in Enron s financial reports is due to conflict of interests. As we know today, auditing firms are not to be providing consulting services to remain independent. However, back in the days prior to the fall of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Did The Moon Landing Conspiracy Jade Brown Mr. Bergmann Senior English B2 31 March 2015 Moon landing conspiracy In 1969 NASA decided to send Apollo 11 astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Armstrong was the first to step foot on the moon, the other two came later. These moments were captured on television cameras by Eagle. Armstrong took moon samples and photographs as soon as he landed on the moon. The conspiracy theory claims that the elements of the moon landings were hoaxes by NASA with other organization. In 2009 the American patriot friend s network claimed that the landings helped the U.S. government use the landings to distract the public from the Vietnam War. The landings ended around the same time as the U.S. ended its involvement with the war. It is proven that the moon landings was in no relation to the end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Many conspiracies claim that the landings did not happen and that NASA employees have lied or say that the landings did happen but not in the way that has been told. The public s whole idea was that the whole moon landing program was a hoax from the beginning. Some claim that the technology that sends men to the moon was lacking or that the solar flares or wind made the trip impossible. Conspiracists claim the landing are a hoax because of the photos and films, the environment, mechanical issues, and transmissions. Conspiracists look mostly at the pictures and films that were taken from the moon. They point out oddities. They say in some pictures, crosshairs seem to be behind objects which is a sign of the picture being cropped or rotated for aesthetic impact. As previously discussed, dental radiation exposure is low; but, it is the dentists responsibility to follow the guidelines such as ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) and ALADA (As Low as Diagnostically Acceptable) principles(3). Some of the ways that can that be helpful in minimizing dosage are use of the fastest image receptor compatible with the diagnostic task (F speed film or digital)(1), proper film exposure and processing techniques, collimation of the beam to the size of the receptor, use of protective aprons and thyroid collars, (8) and limiting the number of images obtained to the minimum necessary to obtain essential diagnostic information. The movie and the main character Lester Burnham are aiming to make us realise that life can be short therefore we should lead more meaningful lives. Through this, he takes us one year back which summarises his life and those around him. Outward appearances can be very deceiving as anyone can acquire superficial impressions. In this discussion, I will be examining closely on a number of identities that is found in American Beauty . In the film, the characters are in the search for what they believed was their happiness. Too focused on finding what they deemed was happiness, they failed to consistently maintain coherent identities. Lester Burnham, a husband and a father, who is the protagonist of the film, feels ambushed at home and at work. He has little to no control of his life as his wife Carolyn strives to be the perfect American family. Lester unleashes from being controlled when he meets his daughter s best friend, Angela and sees her as a femme fatale and their neighbour s son, Ricky. Ricky introduces himself to Lester on one of Carolyn s business social function and gets along immediately while sharing a joint. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in school which may result in gender and ethnic differences in achievement. Fanfiction Terminology defines a fandom as the fan based community dedicated to a particular TV show or other cult inducing medium, including movies, books, comics, and other source material (Common Fandom Terms 1). Someone may be invested in collecting Beatles albums, and another person may have memorized every character in the Marvel universe. Many people may be caught up in lamenting over episodes of Doctor Who, while some may be disturbed yet thrilled by the storyline of Death Note. When these people aggregate to enjoy particular media together, fandoms begin to expand. Although fandoms are deemed in the vernacular as cool and modern , they actually date back to the 1880s when the fans of the Sherlock Holmes series mourned over the main character s death. According to Fancyclopedia 3, an organization named First Fandom was created in 1959 to gather science fiction fans (1). It is not a surprise that there are millions of established fandoms today, especially since we are living in a world where the Information Explosion has already taken place. Medullary Reticular Formation Essay During REM sleep there are numerous output fibers from REM sleep triggering regions that go towards the medial medullary reticular formation, some of which have synaptic contacts with the neurotransmitter serotonin, that contain medullary neurons. Comparing and Contrasting Shelley s Frankenstein with Brook s Young Frankenstein The 1818 book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the 1972 movie Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks both portray the differences in feminism regarding the cultural times through the character of Elizabeth. When Mary Shelley wrote the book Frankenstein, she was on a mission to pursue equal rights in education for her daughter. In Shelley s time, the only way to show feminine empowerment was to be literate and well poised, which readers can see in certain passages featuring Elizabeth in Shelley s book. By Elizabeth being so engrossed in keeping a good appearance and not even hug or kiss her husband goodbye, she demonstrates that she is more important than any man, even her lover. Also in this scene, her voice is noticeably louder than Frankenstein s as she proclaims her love for him, hinting that because he is so captivated by her beauty, she has the upper hand, a common trait sought to be depicted by many women in the 70 s. Just like in the novel, Elizabeth takes a backseat during most of the plot but obviously misses her soon to be husband, just as the novel Elizabeth did. Contrastingly, the film s Elizabeth is able to make a trip to Europe to see Frankenstein and to be with him. However, when she arrives, she is seduced by the monster. This act demonstrates Elizabeth s free will and unwillingness to hold back her feelings due to a societal norm that she must stay with the man who she has been engaged to, as it is her personal choice to be with the Creature. As the audience discovers, Elizabeth is truly only attracted to and falls in love with the Creature because he is physically well endowed and attractive. The description Agnew gives comes off as being ambiguous and incomplete. Arguably, the strain of losing something good can be interpreted a certain way by someone and a completely different way by another person. A perfect example would be a drug dealer losing his cocaine. According to this theory he is more apt to commit a deviant act to get his cocaine back. Obviously the problem here is the fact that he was already committing a crime before the strain ever took place. On the other, a victim of identity theft has their entire savings wiped out. The two ways in which they are similar are they both lost something important to them. The word good is not defined by what society approves or disapproves of. With God s covenant in mind, the Puritans lived a very straightforward, yet tense life. Through Puritan literature, it is clear the lives of the Puritans were based around the covenant between God and the society, with any mistakes leading to punishment and fear within the people causing the inevitable demise of Puritan society. The Puritans lived a life in which there was a very fine line between what was agreeing with God s covenant, and what was going against the agreement. When Giles kills an arguably innocent Ben, he does not suffer the moral ambiguity that Willow encounters when she kills a guilty Warren. But the Scooby gang doesn t know about any of these things and, even though Dawn obviously knows that Ben is a weak and, by virtue of the circumstances, treacherous human being because of his weakness, Giles certainly has no knowledge of any of Ben s immoral actions when he kills him. Giles is acting on the assumption that Ben is completely innocent but powerless to stop Glory, should she ever wish to return for purposes of payback. Giles realizes that something needs to be done and that whoever does it will be incurring feelings of guilt otherwise he would have left Buffy to do it. By saving her from the act of murder, Giles acknowledges the moral ambiguity of the act itself, the (apparent) innocence of Ben, and the inevitability of guilt for whoever happens to do what, in Giles view, has to be done. But, we notice, feelings of guilt never come, and the ambiguity of this act never surfaces (script directions describe Giles during/after the murder this way: Giles expression never changes ). Giles objectifies the evil it is not in him, but he is merely the carrier, the means for an act which must be done, one way or another. Unfortunately, if an unwanted citizen passed, they were on many an occasion failed anyway, still, if you managed to pass you would have been forced to pay a poll tax that many African American citizens could not afford. According to a survey 8% of the total revenue generated by a telecom company is lost due to outage of power supplied to BTS. Although the BTS has back up systems installed which are uninterrupted power supply and generator. When the main power supply of the BTS fails, it shifts to UPS, if the failure presists for longer time the BTS shifts to generator. With all the equipments installed to avoid power failure the BTS power outage is very high. When the BTS power dies out that particular cell is out of the global communication network. In urban areas this phase is for a short period of time but in rural far off areas this problem is for long time unless someone comes to fix it. On observing, the power outage occurs due to lack of power monitoring systems. The system demands for a continuous monitoring of the power of the BTS so that when any one of the source dies out the service providers should fix it as soon as possible. In urban areas the revneue generated is very high and a particular company can afford alot of man power to monitor the BTS continuously but in rural areas the revenue generated is low and continuous monitoring by man power isnt possile all of the time. • 37. Epicurus And John Stuart Mill In part one of our book, The Good Life, we studied five different philosopher s viewpoints on what is needed in order for a person to have a good, fulfilling life. They all included the concepts of pleasure and happiness to some extent in their theories, but they all approached the ideas in different ways. The two hedonists we studied, Epicurus and John Stuart Mill, place heavy emphasis on the importance of pleasure. They both believe that pleasure is a necessity in the ideal life. Jean Kazez agreed with their viewpoints in her theory and said that happiness was a necessity for a good life. Epicurus and Mill also argue that there is nothing else that we ultimately desire beyond pleasure and that it is an intrinsic good. According to hedonism, pleasure is the most important good and the ultimate goal in life. Epicurus states that pleasure is in intrinsic good. Mill agrees with him, but along with Kazez, says that happiness is also an elemental good. In Epicurus theory, he defines pleasure as the absence of pain. Mill also uses this definition, but applies it to happiness as well. Therefore, we can agree on a definition for the two terms that makes sense: happiness and pleasure are both the absence of pain. According to Mill, happiness and pleasure are correlated. He says that happiness is the existence of pleasure. This is what drives all of our actions and desires. We desire things because it will bring us pleasure in some way and we avoid things because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Essay On Plastic Recycling a significant increase in the cost recycling the plastic, and the resulting product will have lower market value due to lower quality. Recycling plastic generally is more energy efficient than creating new plastic. Over 1000 gallons of gasoline is saved by recycling one ton of plastic. The liquefaction of polyolefins actually produces new oil stock that are used in other manufacturing, as well as several marketable byproducts such as diesel fuel, burnable fuel, and HCL. Plastic recycling becomes more profitable as the cost of oil rises. In the 1970 s, fears of limited oil supplies led to a significand demand for plastic recycling. In California and some other locations, the government requires recycling, and provides access to constant streams of plastic that allow for more plastic recycling plants to run continuously. In crowded areas, such as japan, limited access to natural resources leads to high value of recycled plastic products produced locally. Research and development A company called Ak Inovex is developing a new process of recycling plastics that does not use water to clean the plastic. The process also uses less electricity, and creates a higher quality product. The new process is used to recycle Styrofoam, polystyrene and ABS, which are often sent to landfills instead of being recycled. The new method of recycling utilizes chemical solvents and special devices that cool the plastic forming plastic beads. Over 90 percent of plastic types can be recycled with ... Another thing was that the narrator (whom I felt was a woman no man could portray these feelings like a woman) and I had strikingly similar feelings. Symbols represent a meaning that is not clearly stated by the author. The novel represents everyday objects and a location that contributes to the story through the characters actions. Some blame can be put onto parents if they do not lead their children into an active healthy lifestyle. Many children tend to either live a vigorously active lifestyle or sedentary lifestyle, which is greatly influenced by their parents. A bad habit in diet can also induce the chances of childhood obesity. For example, Beverages such as sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and whole fat milks are leading sources of added sugars and solid fats, respectively, in the diets of US children and contribute nearly one fifth of total caloric intake. (Ford and Popkin, 47 53) This explains how many sugary drinks are incorporated into young children s diets and can be very unhealthy for them. Most children love sugary drinks, but these drinks can have a negative impact on their diet causing them to gain unwanted excess weight. One way to help this is by monitoring the amount of sugar a day they consume.
