Essay Writing Descriptive
Writing an essay on the topic of "Essay Writing Descriptive" can be a challenging task, as it
requires a delicate balance between creativity and precision. Descriptive writing demands a vivid
and evocative use of language to paint a clear picture for the reader. This means carefully
selecting words and constructing sentences that not only convey information but also evoke
sensory experiences. Striking the right balance between being descriptive and avoiding
unnecessary embellishments is crucial.
The difficulty arises in the need to capture the essence of the subject matter in a way that
engages the reader's imagination. Choosing the right details and arranging them coherently can
be a formidable task, as it requires a deep understanding of the subject and an ability to
communicate that understanding effectively. Moreover, maintaining a logical flow throughout
the essay while incorporating descriptive elements adds an extra layer of complexity.
Another challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and generic descriptions. A successful essay in
descriptive writing should bring a fresh perspective, offering unique insights and viewpoints.
This requires not only creativity but also a keen observational eye and the ability to find beauty
or significance in the seemingly mundane.
Additionally, meeting word count requirements without compromising on quality poses its own
set of challenges. Struggling to find the right words or being torn between different descriptive
elements can be time-consuming and mentally taxing.
In conclusion, crafting an essay on the topic of "Essay Writing Descriptive" demands a high level
of skill, patience, and attention to detail. It requires the writer to navigate the fine line between
providing a detailed, immersive experience and maintaining a coherent, well-structured piece of
writing.

Essay on The Princess and the Pilot
Eve felt something soft, sharp, and icy cold touching against her cheek. When she
tried to move and realized she couldn t, she figured that she was either frozen solid
or buried deep beneath a thick layer of heavy snow. Her body was so numb from
the bitter cold that she couldn t tell whether anything was pressing down on it. She
tried to remember how long she d been out. Had she been knocked
unconscious...No. No, then she remembered. She d been sleeping, in the balloon.
But how had she ended up on the ground? But before she could come up with any
sort of an answer, she heard someone cry her name, and in an instant she was
scooped up from the snowy ground she had been laying upon. Eva, she heard a voice
say. It was full of relief,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trees around them were larger than any Eve had ever seen before, with thick
branches and boughs that hung low to the ground, forming a small hideaway

sat her next to the trunk, knelt down before her, and took her hands. Are you
ready? she whispered calmly. It s a quiet game. I m going to leave you here, only
for a few moments...and if you stay absolutely silent and don t make a sound until I
get back, then you ll be the winner. Eve hesitated, starting to see what her mother
was really getting at. You ll be gone? Only for the shortest while. Her mother
hooked their pinkies together. I promise. Can you be brave and stay as quiet as
you can for that long? Will I win something if I do? Of course you will. It s a very
special present, and it will be all yours. Eve had already been promised two of
those within the last few hours, and now a third was being added. She stared into
her mother s deep brown eyes, wishing she could be as brave as she was. O...O
Okay... she said. Her mother s smile grew ever warmer. You re a sweetheart, she

When relating to the external factor which has a strategic implication for Apple s

Intense competitors at current state
Porter s Five Forces Current rivalry: Apple faces an intense and fierce competition

The differentiation that is brought by Apple is really commendable, considering
the company was in the brink of bankruptcy to a most sought after organization in
the world. Coming out with iTunes was arguably the best product in the market
because it virtually boosted up the sales of iPod. The product, iTunes provide a
complete music downloading solution with a minimum fee per download, making
it the biggest legal downloading software with the affiliation of the 5 biggest
record companies, BMG, EMI,SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, UNIVERSAL
AND WARNER BROS as well as 200 independent labels (Hoskisson,2009). The
strategy to monopolize the market and making it a legal business, in the event of
piracy and legal issues of music and software downloading from rivals such as
Kazaa and Napster pays of big time and structuring a deal with the record companies
established its strong base. While competitors trying to play catch up on the
innovative relationship between iTunes and iPod, Apple focus on bringing in new
idea ranges such as iPhone, Apple TV and the newest addition which is the iPad and
develop a synergy between all of them. They also reinvent their methods by milking
the cash cows and concentrate on the existing innovative inventions by incremental
improvements and cost reductions, which is basically aligning marketing and business
strategy with product development, which leaves others out of their league.(Meyer,

Out of all forms of literature currently known to man, educational textbooks are
arguably the least interesting. On top of being incredibly boring, textbooks,
especially American history ones, neglect to include the entirety of the information
that it should. Because American history textbooks wish only to paint the United
States in a bright light, the authors opt to leave out anything that may hurt its image.

Then, through the content of the rest of his book, he proves himself to be
hypocritical by having laid down an even more boring account of American history.
While he makes a respectable attempt by bringing forth potentially interesting flaws
in history, it really doesn t compensate for how disorganized the book is.
Loewen s first chapter to actually contain content about history deals with Americans
misinformed beliefs about apparent American heroes. He focuses primarily on
Helen Keller and Woodrow Wilson, both of which have little known facts about
them that may impede on their statuses as heroes. While informing his readers that
Keller was a radical socialist who supported the USSR and that Wilson led many
motiveless invasions of Latin American countries is, in itself, interesting information
to know. However, Loewen constantly jumps back and forth between the two heroes
and their descriptions, causing him to not only fail at accurately portraying his
message, but also send the reader into a boundless pit of confusion which only gets
worse as the book progresses.
Next up for this abomination of literature are two chapters about the frequently
discussed myths of the first settlers of America.
Verbal Overhadowing Inaccuracies
Societies across the United States are comprised of many culturally diverse people.
Each and every individual possesses a distinct perception that differs from one
another of events that have transpired. For most people that desire to achieve a career
in law enforcement, they depend heavily on accurate, detailed eyewitness
testimonials on a daily basis to apprehend the correct perpetrator that had committed a
crime. In fact, law officials frequently inquire about precise and dependable
depictions from bystanders within the community, as their ability to accurately
identify the perpetrator immensely assists law officials. In that regard, law
enforcement officers are restricted significantly by accurate eyewitness testimonies,

The study was conducted to demonstrate the magnitude and effect of verbal
overshadowing between delayed and immediate description retrieval conditions
(Alonga et al., 1990). In the first condition, the manipulation consisted of
participants that were given an immediate description task following the video of
the perpetrator committing a crime (Alonga et al., 1990). In the second condition,
manipulation consisted of participants that were given 20 minute delayed
description tasks of the perpetrator committing a crime (Alonga et al., 1990).
Results indicate that the participants in the immediate description tasks were 4%
less likely to select the correct perpetrator in a police line up; whereas, participants
in the 20 minute delayed description tasks were 16% more likely to select the
perpetrator in a lineup (Alonga et al., 1990). This study is indicative to our findings
concerning the effects of verbal overshadowing, as our results were similar to the
immediate description and delayed description in our study to illustrate the effects of
verbal overshadowing. Our study predicts that the effect of verbal overshadowing is
prevalent in an immediate description retrieval opposed to the delayed description
retrieval in accurately identifying the correct

has been established in India, China, Japan and other eastern cultures for almost 2000

North America and Europe in the past few centuries. However, one might ask; what
fate would Buddhism face had Siddartha Guatama been born in modern times; or
more specifically in modern day North America? Would his new found enlightenment

Traditionally, western thought can be summed up by French philosopher RenJ
Descartes famous saying, quot;Cogito ergo sum quot; or quot;I think therefor I exist
quot;. That is, typically, western man has always equated identity with his mind,
instead of his whole organism (Capra 23). This same line of thought can be found
in traditional Newtonian Mechanics in which the observer of an event is never
taken into account when describing the event. Rather, all things are said to occur at
an quot;absolute time quot; in space, never taking into account the observer s
position or speed relative to the event or the rest of the Universe. However, in the
beginning of the 20th century, new developments in physics began to shake the
framework of the scientific world. Due mostly to work by Albert Einstein, but also
Ernest Rutherford and others, the scientific view of the universe took a drastic turn.
These scientists recognized flaws in the classical Newtonian view of the universe.
The recognition of these flaws led to the development of the Quantum Theory of
Matter as well as Einstein s
Relativity Theory. These theories, as well as the discoveries that they led to,
incorporated the entire universe as being comprised of energy, and that particles,
time, and space, are just different representations of this energy.
Naturally this faced strict opposition. So much so that in spite of it s

Tecumseh s Speech Address To The Osages
Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh, in his speech, Address to the Osages , provides a
proposal to the Osages tribe. Tecumseh s purpose is to convince the Osages that by
working together alongside the other tribes, they would be able to drive the white
colonists off the land. By using a series of rhetoric strategies, Tecumseheffectively
achieves his purpose.
Tecumseh begins his speech by referring to the term Brothers to address the Osages
as a form of repetition throughout the whole oration. He appeals to his audience by
making it known that he sees them as equals who belong to one family [and] are all
children of the Great Spirit . The term brothers implies that they are all a part of one
cohesive unit. Using this term expresses a sense of togetherness and unity that
Tecumseh invokes in order to first establish a connection between the audience and
himself. By doing so, he is able to better reach the thoughts and emotions of the
audience and convince them of his idea as well. The more trust that the audience
gains in Tecumseh, the more likely they are to follow along with his plan to halt the
encroachment of white settlers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Presidential Debate At Longwood University Essay
The Vice Presidential debate, held at Longwood University on October 4th, was
between the Democratic candidate, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, and Republican
candidate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Specific issues were asked about by the
moderator, Elaine Quijano, such as specific qualities of the candidates that would
make them good leaders if tragedy were to occur. However, the candidates used much
of their allotted time to target the opposing presidential candidate and would then
interrupt their opponent multiple times throughout their answer. Comparing the
citizenship qualification of the United Statesto Germany may be helpful in solving the
current immigration problems facing our country. The Vice Presidential debate
showed the differences in opinion on immigration; the Republican campaign looks to
build on the current enforcement only policies and the Democratic campaign seeks to
secure the country while attempting to help immigrants and their families.
The Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has shown an openly negative opinion of
immigration, specifically of Muslims and Mexicans. The common remark people
remember is Trump s promise to build a massive border wall, which would be
devastating to the economy. Mike Pence focused his reply to the question of
immigration on the safety of American citizens being the top priority. He also stated
that their party would suspend the Syrian refugee program because it is too
complicated to know if a person is associated with the Islamic
Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by...
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T.
Coraghessan Boyle, both are short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire
can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice, of folly in
order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring about change to
society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society
across to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution
to the problems of human misery. He proposes that people should start eating
babies, and using them for everything that they are worth on a daily basis. Swift
creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a brilliant idea. He states
that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be
reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so
the economy would increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords,
and it would be an improvement for the tavern business. Swift wants everyone to
know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the English. He wants to
change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The
authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to
reform the British official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is
being done about it. He is trying to shock readers with a twisted story, but also bring
about change
Seminoles Mistake Essay
The Seminoles mistake was even engaging in the Battle of Lake Okeechobee. The
force that was being pursued by Colonel Taylor was only a part of the Seminole
nation that was on the move. They were going to merge with King Philip s tribe and
continue south to the Everglades and into the Florida Keys if necessary. Losing their
resources crippled their ability to move swiftly and sustain themselves through the
winter and summer months cost them dearly.
The Indians had available to them the use of scouts. They used them to prepare them
before the Dade massacre and keep them ahead General Scott and ambushing
Governor Richard at the Battle of Wahoo Swamp. While the Seminoles knew they
were being chased, they didn t know the size of the element that pursued them, the
equipment that they possessed, or the commander of the enemy that pursued them.
Having a basic understanding of who they were fighting was key to the success of
the Seminole raids or Ambushes of the militias and army forces set out against them.
Colonel Zachary Taylor was serving under General Jesup when Osceola raided camp
and freed the captive Indian warriors, woman and children, along with stealing
supplies in June 1836. Colonel Taylor was already well versed in the tactics the
Seminole Tribes and warriors used to out think and out fight the previous
commanders and forces that were sent against them. With the Chiefs not knowing
who was leading the force that chased them, they did not understand that fighting was
Brown And Levinson Theory Of Politeness
Brown and Levinson s politeness theory was designed to expound on the methods
used by speakers who wish to mitigate face threats realised by face threatening acts
toward the hearer. Two significant divisions of the theory involve the fundamental
explanation of politeness and politeness strategies that also function as the core
framework to the theory. The two linguists elaborately explained on the workings of
politeness as well as as how it functions in different social interactions.
Complementarily, the second aspect of the theory encompasses elaborate lists of
politeness strategies. Politeness in the broad sense of the word is defined through the
introduction of the term face . According to Kitamura (2000), she states that there are

According to Brown and Levinson (1987), either the speaker or hearer s face can
be threatened and can have an impact on either positive face or negative face. In
this case, the trait of this politeness strategy does not adhere to the face wants of the
addressee or speaker. There are two leading subcategories under face threatening act,
positive face threatening act and negative face threatening act. The positive face
threatening act is the denotation of appreciation or acceptance for another s wants
or feelings that can thus, impose damage to their face. The act of transgressing or
causing the loss of control over a situation toward someone indicates their positive
face being threatened such as apologise, humiliation, and holding guilt or
responsibility. On the contrary, any freedom to act or avoid from imposition is
obscured when it involves the negative face threatening act. FTAs can pose as an
insult or violation to a speaker s face when his negative face is under threat. As an
illustration, such FTAs include making insincere obligations to a promise or offer
made, offering gratitude, and accepting the hearer s excuses. In conclusion, the
significance of the politeness theory requires the effort of investigating into the ideas
involving politeness. Moreover, it also seeks for individuals to build a deeper
understanding concerning
Athenian Democracy Influenced Western Political Thought
Abstract In this paper, I intend to show that ancient Athenian democracy influenced
western political thought, specifically, western democracies. By influencing such
modern day democracies, ancient Greek culture remains a presence in contemporary
life.
Introduction
Approximately 2500 years ago a series of changes and reformations in political
thought led to the creation of the ancient Athenian democracy. Through the changes
implemented by Solon and Cleisthenes during the Golden Age of Greece, democracy
was born in Athens. Although it was somewhat impractical, exclusionist, and only
open to a very small percentage of the total Athenian population, its impact is still
felt today. Athenian democracy is widely recognized as the model from which all
other forms of democratic rule has evolved from. Through the principles handed
down from that Athenian democracy, ancient Greek culture remains a prominent
presence in contemporary life, particularly in regard to its democratic policies. The
concept of Democracy dates back to the Classic Period, otherwise known as the
Golden Age of Greece. Prior to becoming a unified nation, Greece was made up of
city states that were constantly warring with one another. None of these city states
possessed full control over its neighbors. It was during this time and because of these
circumstances that there was great advancement in Greek thought encompassing
philosophy and politics. These advancements are responsible for the strong Greek
An Experiment On Synthesized Luminol
Abstract: In this experiment we synthesized luminol with the objective to
demonstrate the process of using a stating material, converting it into a product and
using it for a reaction. 5 nitro 2, 3 dihydrophthalazine 1, 4 dione was used as our
starting material which then underwent through the process of refluxing and
vacuuming to retrieve the luminol. In order to achieve chemilumenescence, two
stock solute ions were made with sodium hydroxide, potassium ferricyanide and
hydrogen peroxide and mixed respectively in a dark room in order to observe an
emitted blue light. Introduction: The chemiluminescence of luminol was recently

In this experiment, various processes such as refluxing help synthesize luminol.
Refluxing is the process boiling a solution and condensing the vapor by cooling it
simultaneously through the attached jacketed condenser that contains a water in
/water out outlets. . Experimental: To initiate the experiment, 5 nitro 2, 3
dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione (0.15g, 0.96mmol) was weighed out and added to a
(5.00 mL) conical vial. Into the same vial, NaOH (2.00 mL, 3.00M in H2O) was
added until a brown red solution was formed. Sodium hydrosulfite (0.25g, 1.45mol)
was added after. A reflux apparatus (with water in/water out lines attached and water
flowing through the system) was assembled attaching the conical vial. The conical
vial rested on an aluminum block and hot plate ready to be refluxed for 5 minutes.
The temperature read 250В°C after it had completely refluxed. Once the solution
was refluxed for 5 minutes, it was then cooled for 5 minutes to room temperature
with the addition of acetic acid and [acetic acid to quench (add H2)]. After the
addition of acetic acid, the solution turned yellow and formed a precipitate. The
solution was placed on ice for 10 minutes. Once the solution had been cooled, the
solution went through a vacuum filtration until the precipitate was completely dried.
The precipitate recovered is the luminol, which was used as the
Battered Women’s Syndrome Plea and a Defendants

When battered woman s syndrome has been used as a plea of self defense,
especially in cases of homicide, it has highly been scrutinized. According to recent
research, characteristics associated with the syndrome form a standard that jurors
use to judge battered women. This study would evaluate how characteristics of a
defendant would affect a juror s legal decision making, in a case of a woman
pleading not guilty under terms of self defense, who were suffering from battered
woman s syndrome.
To discuss the role of the battered women s syndrome in relation to how
characteristics of a victim affect legal decision making it is important to define what
battered women s syndrome is. Battered women s syndrome is the array of physical

Because the violence that battered woman face is continual and the woman are not
on equal physical grounds, they usually strike back, and this is usually reflected in
the circumstances surrounding the killing like using a weapon (Schuller Vidmar,
1992). Furthermore, because of the unequal fighting grounds, woman usually do not
attack during a direct confrontation (i.e. during a beating), but rather at some point
outside of a confrontation, usually due to perceiving that there is no escape from
her situation other than attacking back (Schuller Vidmar, 1992). Because woman
strike back at their abusers; battered woman s syndrome has been used in courts as
a plea when their actions were believed to be in self defense (Hodell et. al, 2011).
And when a battered woman kills her abuser, they must convince a jury of the
rationality of her lethal actions to successfully advance a plea of self defense
(Schuller et al., 2004). When jurors believe that under the given circumstances a
defendant s behavior was justified under the law a jury can find a defendant not
guilty by reason of self defense (Hodell et al., 2011). Recent research in case s of self
defense suggest that when using the battered women s syndrome certain
characteristics of the defendant could interfere with the accused sentencing (Russell,
Ragatz, Kraus, 2012). The problem is that when defendant s claim to be battered they
may be at a disadvantage in the courtroom when their characteristics, experiences
A Brief Note On Water Supply And Sanitation
Water supply and sanitation is a problem in developing nations as they lack the
proper resources to install a water collection foundation. Bolivia can be considered
a developing nation that has a water supply problem as they do not necessarily
have the proper infrastructure to supply their population and they also lack a
water regulation program. The village of Lupalaya is a small settlement located at
approximately 16.195 degrees latitude, 68.841 degrees longitude with an estimated
elevation of 12,600 ft above sea level on the shore of Lake Titicaca. The village is
also located 60 miles NW of the largest populous city in Boliviaof La Paz. Due to
Lupalaya s proximity to La Paz the village is greatly affected by the La Paz El Alto
concession which led to the privatization of water supplyand sanitation.

All I have to say about A Rose for Emily is that she was a crazy person! Faulkner is
a really worthy and famous writer that has a lot to say in his writings and I think
that he accomplishes that when he writes. On December 10, he delivered his
acceptance speech to the academy in a voice so low and rapid that few could
make out what he was saying, but when his words were published in the newspaper
the following day, it was recognized for its brilliance; in later years, Faulkner s
speech would be lauded as the best speech ever given at a Nobel ceremony.

There were a lot of different emotions that were represented in this selection, but
Faulkner didn t tell us that the characters were angry he used details to show us
people s emotions. Try to be better than yourself. An artist is a creature driven by
demons. He doesn t know why they choose him and he s usually too busy to
wonder why. He is completely amoral in that he will rob, borrow, beg, or steal from
anybody and everybody to get the work done. (Faulkner/Stein) When he talks he
uses a lot of emotion and that shows his style of writing. William Faulkner gave a
Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech and in it he wrote about A Rose for Emily he gives
himself challenges when he writes and one of the challenges is pity and sacrifice
which has been the glory of the past. When he writes he is saying that the people
who have had pity thrown upon them and the people who have made their
sacrifices are the only ones who get the glory. The human drama in Faulkner s
novels is then built on the model of the actual, historical drama extending over
almost a century and a half. (Faulkner) In A Rose for Emily this is shown when all

The American Black Bear and Grizzly Bear both have many habitats. Having different
habitats helps with the environment. American Black Bears live in at least 40 states in
North
America. They also live in Canada and Mexico. Grizzly Bears on the other hand live
in an assortment of areas and climates. They can live in dense forests, subalpine

Ancient Mayans Research Paper
Ancient Mayans
Who were the Ancient Mayans? The Ancient Mayans were a religion/culture that
was in Mesoamerica (Southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize) beginning at
around 250 CE. They believed in over 165 gods and made advanced calendars and
astronomical buildings, they believed heavily on the fact that religion and science
were the same thing. They were able to calculate solar years and predict solar
eclipses. The Maya believed everyone went to the underworld ruled by evil gods
shown as jaguars. The three major gods were the god of the sun, the god of maize,
and the god of rain but they had a god for almost everything in nature and had a
strong belief in forest spirits. They had many ancient texts all written in hieroglyphs

The Maya carried out sacrifices, this was one of the things they were known for,
they would build great astronomical buildings used for these rituals/sacrifices. An
example of the types of sacrifices they did is something called a bloodletting
performed by the people but run by the priests. The Maya believed that the
underworld could be accessed from the physical world through things such as a
cave or cenote (natural pit or sinkhole). The underworld to them is not like say hell
like in christian faith but more of a world of the dead. There are multiple beliefs
for this underworld though some believed in something called Xibalba which was
a dark and horrid place but there is a story in one of their texts that states two twins
going into Xibalba to rescue their father, and kill the lords of death. Some believed
that the dead could come back to the physical world and speak to the leaving. They
believed that the kings had supernatural powers when they died so they would enter
the underworld but then use those supernatural powers and become a
Risk Of Accident Attorney
There are many cities across the country that are becoming more bike and
motorcycle friendly. Unfortunately, that leads to more accidents involving bikes
and cars or trucks. In most collisions, the rider is often blamed when they weren t
at fault. There s a certain bias against riders where they get blamed for reckless
riding. This is one of the most important reasons to consult an attorney as soon as
you ve been in a bike accident. Common Accident Types While accident victims
might feel like their situation and injuries are unique, experienced lawyers have
likely seen a similar scenario previously. From head on collisions to rear end and left
turn collisions, there are few accident scenarios that an accident attorney hasn t seen.

Statute of Limitations In California, there s a limit to the amount of time that
passes before you can file a personal injury claim. The statute of limitations for a
personal injury case is 2 years. If the case isn t filed within that 2 year period, it
could forfeit the victim s ability to seek compensation for their injury. While some
people wait until they know the outcome of their injuries, you should always consult
with an attorney immediately. Accident victims often think they ll get better over
time, and only think about a lawsuit when they realize the impact was long lasting.
This can ruin their chances of receiving any compensation at all. Contacting an
Accident Attorney Within a week or two of your accident, you should be talking to
an attorney. The attorney should be experienced and knowledgeable regarding car
accident claims. He or she will be able to guide you in the first steps necessary when
you deserve compensation for an accident that wasn t your fault. They ll be able to
hire investigators and scene reconstructionists who will help bolster your claims
against the motorist. Often, there s an instant assumption that the bike rider or
motorcyclist was at fault, and your attorney will work hard against that
Book Of Negroes Character Analysis
No two places in the world will ever have the exact same circumstances. Everything
impacts one s actions, from how others act there, what day it is, where you are and
even to the weather. In the novel The Book of Negroes, author, Lawrence Hill
demonstrates how the setting of an event greatly impacts one s actions, emotions
and even what skills they learn for survival. Hill best demonstrates this through the
journey her main character, Aminata Dee, goes on. From her hometown in Bayo,
Africa, to a slave vessel, following with life as a slave in St. Helena and
Charlestown, and finally ending with her being free in London England. This novel
takes place in the years 1745 through to the early 1800s and follows the journey of

On this plantation, she is in an unsafe environment and acts out of fear and anger.
It is thanks to a kind woman she meets on the plantation, named Georgia, that she is
able to survive in this horrible place. After Georgia healed me, two things helped
me avoid more troubles with Appleby: I never let Georgia s side when the master
was around, and Appleby bought a new Negro woman named Sally (Hill pg.231
232) Because she is scared of Appleby and others on the plantation, after too many
incidents where men have forced themselves on her, she adjusts her actions
quickly. Instead of being on her own she insures she is with someone else at all
times possible, and stays low so no attention is drawn to her. Not only this, but she
must act dumb so that she will not upset the whites who own her. By adapting to
her environment and learning to portray herself as a non threat, Hill reflects just
how smart Aminata is, and how much where she is holds her back in life. After
giving birth and having Appleby sell her child, Aminata refuses to work for Appleby
and is sold to a man named Solomon Lindo. This man originally found out about her
for being an amazing worker and first met her when he was inspecting Appleby s
indigo plantation. When living with Lindo, she is given a back house to share with

Discuss the role and impacts of TNC s in the global economy. (40 marks)
Transnational Corporations (TNC s) play a large role in the development of the
global economy, through the sharing of research, trade and technological advances
between the different countries. They also play a big part in increasing the
interconnection in the world s economic, cultural and political systems, otherwise
known as globalisation. Nevertheless there are both positive and negative impacts
that TNC s bring to the global economy, socially, economically, politically and
culturally.
The world has seen a huge rise in the number of Transnational Corporations. Since
the 1970s the number of TNCs has risen from 7,000 to over 60,000. To begin with,

The development gap is also widened as workers in the developing world are paid
less to make the same products or provide the same service.
For example, BT, a company that has operations in around 170 countries, has shifted
their customer call service from India to the UK. The exploitation of cheap labour
has had both positive and negative impacts. 5,000 people that BT has employed in
India have not only been supplied with a job but also with invaluable skills. The
money that they earn would contribute to the family income, boosting the standard of
living for both the employees and the employees family. The TNC is also puts money
into the Indian economy, contributing to economic growth and boosting the countries
GDP. Many countries (including India and Brazil) which were classified as
developing countries, have become newly industrialised countries (NICs).
Nevertheless exploitation can occur as wages are set at very low levels and
therefore the wealth has been shifted from the 5,000 people that would have been
employed in the UK to the shareholders of the company through additional profit
made from the competitively low wages paid to the workers.
There is also the question that many pose; are TNCs corrupting local cultures around
the world? Montenegro is an example of a country that has banned TNCs such as
McDonalds to push back against globalization. They believed that big global
companies were dominating their
Personal Note On Time Management And Leisure
I recorded and tracked my time for a week and as I was totaling up my hours for
each block of time used in similar tasks I soon realized a trend. I love to sleep and I
love to be social. Community service and religion was absent in my totaled hours.
Time management and leisure are very closely related. With the help of a time use
calendar, I plan to better balance my time in the future. My initial observations of
sleeping or napping were not surprising because we all need it. Second, I realized
that I am an incredibly social person more than I thought I was. For the most part, I
love to be with my friends, my family, and with my significant other. The third
place I significantly spend my time is at work, I was surprised it was not school. I
was shocked to find that I did not spend a lot of time doing homework as much as I
initially thought. I spend just as much time driving as I do getting ready. I hope
technology advances with self driving cars so I can get ready on my way to work
and school, which would kill two birds with one stone. I don t feel wasteful of my
time because it seems I don t watch as much television as I thought I did. I can
however, use my time more wisely in using more hours to study and do homework
over the weekend than to be socializing as much as I do. I seem to binge socialize
from Thursday through Sunday. I can balance that out if I socialize throughout the
week and leave some time to do my homework in the weekend. I noticed that I hardly

depressive disorder. Participants received one of the three treatments: escitalopram
plus placebo, bupropion sustained release plus escitalopram, or venlafaxine extended
release (XR) plus mirtazapine. They used the Concise Health Risk Tracking Self

baseline ideation did not contribute to elevated suicide risks. They also found that the
treatment group that was taking Bupropion SR with escitalopram had the greatest

Essay The Whole Town s Sleeping and Terribly Strange Bed
The Whole Town s Sleeping and Terribly Strange Bed
In this essay I will be comparing two (2) short stories The Whole
Town s sleeping by Ray Bradbury (1950) and A Terribly Strange Bed by Wilkie
Collins (1856). Both stories are about fear and they make us feel fear or are supposed
to; they make the reader scared or frightened. Both stories have the same purpose,
which is so scare the reader. I am going to compare the way Ray Bradbury and Wilkie
Collins create tension, suspense, mood and tone.
In the first few lines of The Whole Town s Sleeping , the author describes the
setting for the story, the little town was deep far away from everything, kept to
itself by a river and a forest and a ravine , but before that he ... Show more content on

A Terribly Strange Bed , however is different, as the author seems to create a
different mood and tone in the openings to the story. He uses words like rather a wild
life , delightful city of our sojourn , idling about , and splendid city . In A Terribly
Strange Bed the city in which the story is set, is praised in the story, although not
really mentioned much delightful city of our sojourn it doesn t seem to play a large
part in the story and doesn t seem to be anything special. However in The Whole
Town s sleeping , quite the opposite is the case, the first two paragraphs (half the
page) are all about the setting and this is very important to the mood and tone of the
story without it, you might not believe that a madman could run around killing
people for months without being caught.
Tension and Suspense are also very important in both stories. Tension is built up a
little at the beginning of The Whole Town s sleeping , before the women find the
body and its unexpected. The main excitement of the story is at the end, when
Lavinia is running through the ravine. The tension is build up using sentences that
get shorter and shorter, so that you read them faster and faster until the last
sentences are only a couple of words long and the reader is getting really excited.
Then when Lavinia reaches the house and locks the door, the reader feels the relief

It Happened On The Way To War Paper
It Happened On The Way To War is a book by Rye Barcott. This book talks about a
marine who dreams of making a difference in the world. We read about his life,
feeling as if we were a part of it. Three values that he clearly shows in this book are
balance, leadership and Inspiration. Somebody once said that in order to succeed in
life, you have to have a balance between your personal life and your professional
life. Rye Barcott not only shows us the importance of having a balance, but he also
shows us how hard it is to find that balance. While he was a part of the Marines, he
was expected to transition easily from the combat mode to peace keeping mode. He

When Rye met Salim, he decided to take take Salim s vision of Kibera and make it

future and how he is currently trying to achieve it, however he probably did not
expect Rye to actually support the dream or even come back to Kibera. However
Rye shocked him by not only coming back to Kibera, but also by working with him
to achieve his goal. Tabitha s meeting with Rye is a great example of how Rye
encouraged the heart. He had just met Tabitha and she was asking him to trust her and
help her. There was no guarantee that Tabitha would succeed, but Rye supported her
and helped her achieve her dream. Challenging
the Process requires you to stand up and stand out of the crowd. There are many
books published about a person and the amount of good her or she does in the world.
However the reason that Rye s story is different from others is because Rye is a
marine. People are attracted to this book, because on the front cover the caption
reads A Marines Path To Peace Which is very unique. When people think about the
Marines, they think of war not peace. There aren t many books about a marine that
fights a war in the day, and runs a non profit organization by night. The work that
Rye does in his book, things like organizing soccer tournaments and trash clean ups,
enables others to act. In order for the kids to
Domestic Violence And Drugs And Crime
Violence and drugs are typical factors of a crime related lifestyle. Drug users may
not take part in legitimate economy and are exposed to situations that encourage
crime so the odds and frequency of association in illegal activity is increased ( Fact,
1994). Drugs effect the behavior of users and often time generates violence and can
snowball into many other poor decisions. In Centervale, California, domestic violence
is not taken lightly. Independently, domestic violence is an extremely serious matter
but adding other violations to the list of charges, the offender is staring at a heavy
sentence. In this case, Abby and Bobby have been in trouble with the law and this
incident outside their home may be what puts them both away for a very long time.
My officer and I received a call to respond to a domestic abuse situation. When we
arrived at the scene, Abbey and Bobby appear to be having an altercation outside
of their house. There is blood trickling down the side of Abby s head that she
seemed to be oblivious to, her speech is garbled, and Bobby has scratches all over on
his hands and face. With this incident continuing outside and the physical evidence, it
has granted probable cause for an arrest. Probable cause is defined as facts and
circumstances that would lead a reasonable person to believe that there is evidence
of a crime located at a particular place or on a person (Argosy University Online,
2017). Both Abby and Bobby are subjected to several charges. One of the

Examples Of William Blake s Counterclaim
Blake s counterclaim is that heaven and hell must interact as vital contraries, like
partners in a marriage who are different yet joined. Both are equally important,
though in this enthusiastic polemic Hell gets the better of the argument
(Damrosch 101). One thing I ve noticed about Blake is that he was a non
conformist who put his political, religious and artistic ideas into his work. The
Marriage of Heaven and Hell is a good example of this. Essentially Blake disagreed
with the old myth that good people went to heaven and bad people went to hell. He
thought that every person had some good and bad in them. I have to say that I agree
with William Blakeabout this. If there is a Heaven and a Hell, there is no way that it
could be as simple
The Huston Rockets Back-to-Back Championships Essay
Keep moving the ball around and dump it inside to Hakeem. Rudy Tomjanovich
Sounds pretty easy right. Wrong. While Hakeem Olajuwon was one the most
dominating centers that the NBA has ever seen, the defense usually didn t let him get
easy buckets inside the paint. Or at least try not too. The offense that coach
Tomjanovich used during the Houston Rocketsback to back championships relied
heavily on Hakeem s post skills and the ability of their outside shooters to knock
down wide open looks. This kind of offense is known as a 4 Out, 1 In Motion
Offense and it is probably one of the easiest offenses that a team can use. The
concept of the offense is to get the ball and defensemoving and end up getting the

This takes the defending post player away from the hoop and allows the offense
team post player to go 1 on 1 with the defender from the free throw line area. This
opens up the inside underneath for back cutters and dribble penetration from the
wings and corners. The high post player can also be used as a screener for the
perimeter players. This can cause a big time mismatch when the defense decides
to start switching the screens. The post player will have a smaller player on him
that he can easier post up on or one of the perimeter players will have the post
defender on them and should easily take them of the dribble for a bucket. This set
can also be used against teams that like to full front the post player. The post player
should move up to the high post area. If they are still fronted by the defender they
should first seal the defender and then cut to the basket for an over the top lob
pass. For a post player that likes to stay down low a team might like to consider using
the 4 Low set. This requires the post player to move from low block to low block,
or from short corner to short corner. It is also used against a defense that has a big,
strong inside post defender or shot blocker that the post player can t beat 1 on 1.
This set opens up the top of the lane for 1 on 1 dribble penetration and cuts. The
post player is set up to post up 1 on 1 with their defender. Taking away the shot

Compare And Contrast The Form Of Government
Introduction: To compare the above forms of government, it will help to have some
brief, dictionary definitions. After that, I will show the relationship between these
forms, as they apply to Ancient Greek city states.
Monarchy: supreme power or sovereignty held by a single person ( Monarchy , n.d.) .
Aristocracy: a government or state ruled by an aristocracy, elite, or privileged upper
class ( Aristocracy , n.d.) .
Tyranny: the government or rule of a tyrant or absolute ruler ( Tyranny , n.d.) .

Additionally, the poor, women, and slaves made up the vast majority of Ancient
Greece ( Can the population of Sparta and Athens be calculated? , n.d.). We can
therefore say that the vast majority of the ruled had far worse lives than the rulers.
And yet the democratic reforms instituted by Solon and later by Cleisthenes only
peeled away rights for the middle classes and male citizens. As I mentioned in last
week s assignment, I think this has largely to do with the ability of the middle classes
to organize a sufficient demand against the rulers, and that Power concedes nothing
without a demand (Douglass, 1857).
To speak to this week s question then, I think it can be said that Ancient Greece was
fundamentally an aristocracy, which is in essence an oligarchy. That would be the
case with both Athens and Sparta. Both of these city states were ruled by a small
minority of their overall populations (oligarchy), and those rulers obtained power
primarily through class (aristocracy). The class divide appears less in Sparta, in that
it was also a military dictatorship, but nevertheless, Sparta s elder council of the
Gerousia was pulled from the aristocracy.(Brand, n.d.,
Mutual Engagement In The Marine Corps
At 18, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. In basic training, I was introduced to a new
way of speaking, and of thinking. This new language, integral to the transformation
of my thought practices, transformed me, from a civilian to a Marine. My
experiences in the Marines confirm the idea of linguistic relativity, proposed in the
Sapir Whorf Hypothesis, and served as my initiation into the MarineCorp s
Community of Practice.
During the three months spent in boot camp, recruits learned an entirely new
language. From the moment of arrival on Parris Island, we were not allowed to use
pronouns. The words I, you, we, or me, were strictly forbidden. Uttering one of these
pronouns inevitably led to I.P.T, the acronym for Intensive Physical Training.... Show

Each branch, each adopts its own unique terminology, its own shared repertoire.
That shared repertoire ties Marines together all over the world. When I go on to a
military base today, I slip right back into this language. I can easily identify other
Marines by the terminology they use.
Even though I am usually on Navy and Air Force bases, the retirees in them are
from various branches. I might say to a man I ve met on base, So what was your
M.O.S.? I was a 3381. I was TAD to 21 Stumps as a member of First FSSG, in
1988. I m hoping to catch a Space a bird to OCONUS today. What about you? .
None of what I said above would mean anything to one not affiliated with to the
Military. Further, the term First FSSG would only have meaning to a Marine. In
Conclusion, Marines are initiated into the Military, during boot camp, via linguistic
relativity. The Language, Thought, and Culture of the Marines, all helped to change
my thought processes, and made me into a Marine. My experiences support the Sapir
Whorf Hypothesis. Additionally, Marines, all over the world are connected by a
unique repertoire. The stated purpose of the military sums up their Joint enterprise.
Mutual Engagement is necessary for Marines to reach their goals. These three traits

The Difference Between Sex and Gender
In today s society sex and gender seem to have two separate connotative meanings.
Sex is a more scientific term that explains physical traits and sexual preferences.
Gender carries a more social tone. Meaning that it refers to the different clothing,
activities, career choices, and positions people hold in society. A person s social
status helps separate or classify the two sexes. br br Sex is the total sum of physical
characteristics that distinguish males and females from each other. The most
distinctive difference in characteristics is that man and women have different
reproductive organs. This is pretty obvious and so are other traits like facial hair,
deep voices, and muscular builds. It is not often that you see a six foot five... Show

With the rapid changes in gender equality it is not as easy to separate sex by what a
person does for a living. What position they hold in society or a household is not a
good indication either. Years ago I could have said that if a person is a police
officer, a soldier, a fireman, a politician, a lawyer, a doctor or any type of highly
paid professional than that person must be a man. Back then this would have been a
pretty good hypothesis. The father was the man of the house. The minister was
always male and there was no such thing as women in sports. br br I could have
probably also said that if a person was a secretary, a grade school teacher, a
receptionist, a nurse, a maid, or a homemaker then that person must be a woman.
People in the female group or gender worked lower paying less demanding jobs
because It was believed that a woman could not handle the pressures that a man s
job required. br br With the absence of the father figure in many American homes
women have taken over as head of the house. They juggle home life and work to
keep their families together so that they can properly raise their children. br br
Women have broken the gender barrier in almost every sport except for football and
hockey. Some women s sports are pretty interesting to watch. I like to look at women
s track, basketball, and boxing every now

My mom sits to the left represented by the circle. She is much smaller and is placed
closer to the parental boundary because at times, especially in times of conflict, our
parental boundary becomes diffused. My dad controls so many aspects of our lives,
which makes it natural for her to fall in line with the children. This map represents a

characters act certain ways. We better comprehend the characters personality and why
the flaws of other character affect the main character. Are main characters problems
the result of other characters personality flaws? Characters endure arduous situations
and it is because of another characters flaw. Being possessiveness, overly critical, and
controlling of others are the reason for main characters problems.
When a characters flaw is dominating, it causes much problem to another character.
An example of possessiveness is by the antagonist, Richard in Killings by Andre
Dubus. Matt s problem is a result of Richards selfishness. Richard is possessive of

The Validity Of Criminal Profiling Essay
The Validity of Criminal Profiling and its Effectiveness on Solving Crime In law,
law enforcement relies on a variety of approaches to solving crimes. One method of
doing so, is criminal profiling. Police use criminal profiling as an aid to identify the
typology of individuals most likely to fit the suspectprofile. In this approach,
evidence of a crimeis used to identify the characteristics of the criminal in relation
to their personality and psychological state of mind. As well as demographic
variables, such as age, race or geographic location, Investigators might use profiling
to narrow down a field of suspects or figure out how to interrogate a suspect already
in custody (Criminal profiling: the reality behind the myth (Winerman, L.2004). As
the use of criminal profiling increases, empirical questions concerning its validity,
reliability, and legal questions regarding its acceptability arise (Pinizzato, A. Finkel,
N.1990). In a survey conducted, several psychologist and psychiatrist were asked
about their views towards the validity of criminal profiling. The results of this survey
found that only ten percent of psychologist and psychiatrist surveyed reported having
any profiling experience and twenty five percent, considered themselves
knowledgeable about profiling (Greene, E., Heilbrun, K. 2014, p.148). Fewer than
twenty five percent of the individuals surveyed, believe that criminal profiling was
scientifically reliable or valid (Greene, E.,

The following report provides a detailed authoritative background analysis on
Aerotoxic Syndrome. The report is broken up into four sections, comprising firstly the
nature of the problem, and how it affects all stakeholders, followed by the
controversies related to the topic, with potential solutions to such controversies. Next
in the report is the identification and prioritisation of appropriate riskcontrols, and
finally an indication of immediate and long term actions the airlinecarrier can take
when a crew member appears to be suffering from the illness, Aerotoxic Syndrome.
Ultimately, the report as a whole will aid your airline carrier surrounding the issues of
Aerotoxic Syndrome now and into the future.
Aerotoxic Syndrome is an illness that is caused by breathing in toxic fumes inside
of the jet aircraft. This is caused by the air intake on a plane, which comes from the
engine where it sucks in the air and pumps it into the cabin, but the toxic oils and
other substances in the engine can easily leak into the airflow and contaminate the air
that all passengers and staff breath. A very common leakage is the leakage of the jet
engine lubricant oil, tricresyl phosphate, otherwise known as TCP or TOCP. The
Government and regulatory authorities have conducted researches that have admitted
to the association between the contamination of the cabin air to chronic health
problems, but they have not admitted to specific causation. Aerotoxic Syndrome
could possibly cause
Influence Of Nietzsche On Christianity
Friedrich Nietzsche s view of master and slave morality lies in the differentiation of
two periods of time in western civilization. Before the fall of the Western Roman
Empire, master ideals such as passion, pride, competition and the concept of
accepting ones fate were accepted and considered positive traits. After the fall;
Judeo/Christian thought replaced master ideals with what Nietzsche calls, slave
ideals such as equality, humility, conformity and the hating/rejection of one s place
in life. The vilification of master ideals following the fall of Rome and the rise of
Christianity led to a perversion of hierarchical roles in society where the weak rule
and the strong are suppressed and imprisoned by faulty morality. Nietzsche s roman...

Socrates through Plato perverted, ancient Greece was a place that encouraged
strength and a pursuit of master ideals. He believes that ancient Greeks were
concerned less with Plato s world of being and more with the world of becoming.

Remember though that to Nietzsche there is nothing decadent about following your

is the decadent with their insistence on doubt and their obsession with the higher

  • 3. Essay on The Princess and the Pilot Eve felt something soft, sharp, and icy cold touching against her cheek. When she tried to move and realized she couldn t, she figured that she was either frozen solid or buried deep beneath a thick layer of heavy snow. Her body was so numb from the bitter cold that she couldn t tell whether anything was pressing down on it. She tried to remember how long she d been out. Had she been knocked unconscious...No. No, then she remembered. She d been sleeping, in the balloon. But how had she ended up on the ground? But before she could come up with any sort of an answer, she heard someone cry her name, and in an instant she was scooped up from the snowy ground she had been laying upon. Eva, she heard a voice say. It was full of relief,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trees around them were larger than any Eve had ever seen before, with thick branches and boughs that hung low to the ground, forming a small hideaway beneath them. It was past the boughs of one tree that she was led. Smiling, Joanna sat her next to the trunk, knelt down before her, and took her hands. Are you ready? she whispered calmly. It s a quiet game. I m going to leave you here, only for a few moments...and if you stay absolutely silent and don t make a sound until I get back, then you ll be the winner. Eve hesitated, starting to see what her mother was really getting at. You ll be gone? Only for the shortest while. Her mother hooked their pinkies together. I promise. Can you be brave and stay as quiet as you can for that long? Will I win something if I do? Of course you will. It s a very special present, and it will be all yours. Eve had already been promised two of those within the last few hours, and now a third was being added. She stared into her mother s deep brown eyes, wishing she could be as brave as she was. O...O Okay... she said. Her mother s smile grew ever warmer. You re a sweetheart, she said, planting a kiss on her daughter s forehead and gently stroking her hair. I promise...I ll be back soon. She climbed to her feet and moved back toward the outskirts of their tiny shelter; just before departing, she turned back. Remember...be as silent as possible. Then she pushed a branch aside, took two

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The differentiation that is brought by Apple is really commendable, considering the company was in the brink of bankruptcy to a most sought after organization in the world. Coming out with iTunes was arguably the best product in the market because it virtually boosted up the sales of iPod. The product, iTunes provide a complete music downloading solution with a minimum fee per download, making it the biggest legal downloading software with the affiliation of the 5 biggest record companies, BMG, EMI,SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, UNIVERSAL AND WARNER BROS as well as 200 independent labels (Hoskisson,2009). While competitors trying to play catch up on the innovative relationship between iTunes and iPod, Apple focus on bringing in new idea ranges such as iPhone, Apple TV and the newest addition which is the iPad and develop a synergy between all of them. They also reinvent their methods by milking the cash cows and concentrate on the existing innovative inventions by incremental improvements and cost reductions, which is basically aligning marketing and business strategy with product development, which leaves others out of their league.(Meyer, 2010). 2. FELIX OKOYE Out of all forms of literature currently known to man, educational textbooks are arguably the least interesting. On top of being incredibly boring, textbooks, especially American history ones, neglect to include the entirety of the information that it should. Then, through the content of the rest of his book, he proves himself to be hypocritical by having laid down an even more boring account of American history. While he makes a respectable attempt by bringing forth potentially interesting flaws in history, it really doesn t compensate for how disorganized the book is. Loewen s first chapter to actually contain content about history deals with Americans misinformed beliefs about apparent American heroes. He focuses primarily on Helen Keller and Woodrow Wilson, both of which have little known facts about them that may impede on their statuses as heroes. While informing his readers that Keller was a radical socialist who supported the USSR and that Wilson led many motiveless invasions of Latin American countries is, in itself, interesting information to know. However, Loewen constantly jumps back and forth between the two heroes and their descriptions, causing him to not only fail at accurately portraying his message, but also send the reader into a boundless pit of confusion which only gets worse as the book progresses. Next up for this abomination of literature are two chapters about the frequently discussed myths of the first settlers of America.

Each and every individual possesses a distinct perception that differs from one another of events that have transpired. For most people that desire to achieve a career in law enforcement, they depend heavily on accurate, detailed eyewitness testimonials on a daily basis to apprehend the correct perpetrator that had committed a crime. In fact, law officials frequently inquire about precise and dependable depictions from bystanders within the community, as their ability to accurately identify the perpetrator immensely assists law officials. In the first condition, the manipulation consisted of participants that were given an immediate description task following the video of the perpetrator committing a crime (Alonga et al., 1990). In the second condition, manipulation consisted of participants that were given 20 minute delayed description tasks of the perpetrator committing a crime (Alonga et al., 1990). Results indicate that the participants in the immediate description tasks were 4% less likely to select the correct perpetrator in a police line up; whereas, participants in the 20 minute delayed description tasks were 16% more likely to select the perpetrator in a lineup (Alonga et al., 1990). This study is indicative to our findings concerning the effects of verbal overshadowing, as our results were similar to the immediate description and delayed description in our study to illustrate the effects of verbal overshadowing. However, one might ask; what fate would Buddhism face had Siddartha Guatama been born in modern times; or more specifically in modern day North America? Traditionally, western thought can be summed up by French philosopher RenJ Descartes famous saying, quot;Cogito ergo sum quot; or quot;I think therefor I exist quot;. That is, typically, western man has always equated identity with his mind, instead of his whole organism (Capra 23). This same line of thought can be found in traditional Newtonian Mechanics in which the observer of an event is never taken into account when describing the event. Rather, all things are said to occur at an quot;absolute time quot; in space, never taking into account the observer s position or speed relative to the event or the rest of the Universe. However, in the beginning of the 20th century, new developments in physics began to shake the framework of the scientific world. Due mostly to work by Albert Einstein, but also Ernest Rutherford and others, the scientific view of the universe took a drastic turn. These scientists recognized flaws in the classical Newtonian view of the universe. The recognition of these flaws led to the development of the Quantum Theory of Matter as well as Einstein s Relativity Theory. These theories, as well as the discoveries that they led to, incorporated the entire universe as being comprised of energy, and that particles, time, and space, are just different representations of this energy. Naturally this faced strict opposition. So much so that in spite of it s

Tecumseh s purpose is to convince the Osages that by working together alongside the other tribes, they would be able to drive the white colonists off the land. By using a series of rhetoric strategies, Tecumseheffectively achieves his purpose. The Presidential Debate At Longwood University Essay The Vice Presidential debate, held at Longwood University on October 4th, was between the Democratic candidate, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, and Republican candidate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Specific issues were asked about by the moderator, Elaine Quijano, such as specific qualities of the candidates that would make them good leaders if tragedy were to occur. However, the candidates used much of their allotted time to target the opposing presidential candidate and would then interrupt their opponent multiple times throughout their answer. Comparing the citizenship qualification of the United Statesto Germany may be helpful in solving the current immigration problems facing our country. The Vice Presidential debate showed the differences in opinion on immigration; the Republican campaign looks to build on the current enforcement only policies and the Democratic campaign seeks to secure the country while attempting to help immigrants and their families. The Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has shown an openly negative opinion of immigration, specifically of Muslims and Mexicans. The common remark people remember is Trump s promise to build a massive border wall, which would be devastating to the economy. Mike Pence focused his reply to the question of immigration on the safety of American citizens being the top priority. He also stated that their party would suspend the Syrian refugee program because it is too complicated to know if a person is associated with the Islamic
  • 11. Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by... A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T. Coraghessan Boyle, both are short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society across to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution to the problems of human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using them for everything that they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so the economy would increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords, and it would be an improvement for the tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the English. He wants to change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to reform the British official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is being done about it. He is trying to shock readers with a twisted story, but also bring about change

According to Brown and Levinson (1987), either the speaker or hearer s face can be threatened and can have an impact on either positive face or negative face. In this case, the trait of this politeness strategy does not adhere to the face wants of the addressee or speaker. There are two leading subcategories under face threatening act, positive face threatening act and negative face threatening act. The positive face threatening act is the denotation of appreciation or acceptance for another s wants or feelings that can thus, impose damage to their face. The act of transgressing or causing the loss of control over a situation toward someone indicates their positive face being threatened such as apologise, humiliation, and holding guilt or responsibility. On the contrary, any freedom to act or avoid from imposition is obscured when it involves the negative face threatening act. FTAs can pose as an insult or violation to a speaker s face when his negative face is under threat. As an illustration, such FTAs include making insincere obligations to a promise or offer made, offering gratitude, and accepting the hearer s excuses. In conclusion, the significance of the politeness theory requires the effort of investigating into the ideas involving politeness. Athenian Democracy Influenced Western Political Thought Abstract In this paper, I intend to show that ancient Athenian democracy influenced western political thought, specifically, western democracies. By influencing such modern day democracies, ancient Greek culture remains a presence in contemporary life. Introduction Approximately 2500 years ago a series of changes and reformations in political thought led to the creation of the ancient Athenian democracy. Through the changes implemented by Solon and Cleisthenes during the Golden Age of Greece, democracy was born in Athens. Although it was somewhat impractical, exclusionist, and only open to a very small percentage of the total Athenian population, its impact is still felt today. Athenian democracy is widely recognized as the model from which all other forms of democratic rule has evolved from. Through the principles handed down from that Athenian democracy, ancient Greek culture remains a prominent presence in contemporary life, particularly in regard to its democratic policies. The concept of Democracy dates back to the Classic Period, otherwise known as the Golden Age of Greece. Prior to becoming a unified nation, Greece was made up of city states that were constantly warring with one another. None of these city states possessed full control over its neighbors. It was during this time and because of these circumstances that there was great advancement in Greek thought encompassing philosophy and politics. These advancements are responsible for the strong Greek

Because the violence that battered woman face is continual and the woman are not on equal physical grounds, they usually strike back, and this is usually reflected in the circumstances surrounding the killing like using a weapon (Schuller Vidmar, 1992). Furthermore, because of the unequal fighting grounds, woman usually do not attack during a direct confrontation (i.e. during a beating), but rather at some point outside of a confrontation, usually due to perceiving that there is no escape from her situation other than attacking back (Schuller Vidmar, 1992). Because woman strike back at their abusers; battered woman s syndrome has been used in courts as a plea when their actions were believed to be in self defense (Hodell et. al, 2011). And when a battered woman kills her abuser, they must convince a jury of the rationality of her lethal actions to successfully advance a plea of self defense (Schuller et al., 2004). When jurors believe that under the given circumstances a defendant s behavior was justified under the law a jury can find a defendant not guilty by reason of self defense (Hodell et al., 2011). Recent research in case s of self defense suggest that when using the battered women s syndrome certain characteristics of the defendant could interfere with the accused sentencing (Russell, Ragatz, Kraus, 2012). The problem is that when defendant s claim to be battered they may be at a disadvantage in the courtroom when their characteristics, experiences

The exploitation of cheap labour has had both positive and negative impacts. 5,000 people that BT has employed in India have not only been supplied with a job but also with invaluable skills. The money that they earn would contribute to the family income, boosting the standard of living for both the employees and the employees family. The TNC is also puts money into the Indian economy, contributing to economic growth and boosting the countries GDP. Many countries (including India and Brazil) which were classified as developing countries, have become newly industrialised countries (NICs). Nevertheless exploitation can occur as wages are set at very low levels and therefore the wealth has been shifted from the 5,000 people that would have been employed in the UK to the shareholders of the company through additional profit made from the competitively low wages paid to the workers. There is also the question that many pose; are TNCs corrupting local cultures around the world? Montenegro is an example of a country that has banned TNCs such as McDonalds to push back against globalization. They believed that big global companies were dominating their
  • 27. Personal Note On Time Management And Leisure I recorded and tracked my time for a week and as I was totaling up my hours for each block of time used in similar tasks I soon realized a trend. I love to sleep and I love to be social. Community service and religion was absent in my totaled hours. Time management and leisure are very closely related. With the help of a time use calendar, I plan to better balance my time in the future. My initial observations of sleeping or napping were not surprising because we all need it. Second, I realized that I am an incredibly social person more than I thought I was. For the most part, I love to be with my friends, my family, and with my significant other. The third place I significantly spend my time is at work, I was surprised it was not school. I was shocked to find that I did not spend a lot of time doing homework as much as I initially thought. I spend just as much time driving as I do getting ready. I hope technology advances with self driving cars so I can get ready on my way to work and school, which would kill two birds with one stone. I don t feel wasteful of my time because it seems I don t watch as much television as I thought I did. I can however, use my time more wisely in using more hours to study and do homework over the weekend than to be socializing as much as I do. I seem to binge socialize from Thursday through Sunday. I can balance that out if I socialize throughout the week and leave some time to do my homework in the weekend. I noticed that I hardly even

Researchers performed a single blind randomized trial with 665 patients with major depressive disorder. Participants received one of the three treatments: escitalopram plus placebo, bupropion sustained release plus escitalopram, or venlafaxine extended release (XR) plus mirtazapine. They used the Concise Health Risk Tracking Self Report to measure suicidal ideation and behaviors. The researchers found that baseline ideation did not contribute to elevated suicide risks. They also found that the treatment group that was taking Bupropion SR with escitalopram had the greatest effect in reducing suicide ideation. Although this study does not pertain to the adolescent population, it is useful because it demonstrates the most effective combination of antidepressants and its success in reducing suicide

Essay The Whole Town s Sleeping and Terribly Strange Bed The Whole Town s Sleeping and Terribly Strange Bed In this essay I will be comparing two (2) short stories The Whole Town s sleeping by Ray Bradbury (1950) and A Terribly Strange Bed by Wilkie Collins (1856). Both stories are about fear and they make us feel fear or are supposed to; they make the reader scared or frightened. Both stories have the same purpose, which is so scare the reader. I am going to compare the way Ray Bradbury and Wilkie Collins create tension, suspense, mood and tone. In the first few lines of The Whole Town s Sleeping , the author describes the setting for the story, the little town was deep far away from everything, kept to itself by a river and a forest and a ravine , but before that he ... He uses words like rather a wild life , delightful city of our sojourn , idling about , and splendid city . In A Terribly Strange Bed the city in which the story is set, is praised in the story, although not really mentioned much delightful city of our sojourn it doesn t seem to play a large part in the story and doesn t seem to be anything special. However in The Whole Town s sleeping , quite the opposite is the case, the first two paragraphs (half the page) are all about the setting and this is very important to the mood and tone of the story without it, you might not believe that a madman could run around killing people for months without being caught. Tension and Suspense are also very important in both stories. Tension is built up a little at the beginning of The Whole Town s sleeping , before the women find the body and its unexpected. The main excitement of the story is at the end, when Lavinia is running through the ravine. The tension is build up using sentences that get shorter and shorter, so that you read them faster and faster until the last sentences are only a couple of words long and the reader is getting really excited. Then when Lavinia reaches the house and locks the door, the reader feels the relief that the

This book talks about a marine who dreams of making a difference in the world. We read about his life, feeling as if we were a part of it. Three values that he clearly shows in this book are balance, leadership and Inspiration. Somebody once said that in order to succeed in life, you have to have a balance between your personal life and your professional life. Rye Barcott not only shows us the importance of having a balance, but he also shows us how hard it is to find that balance. Both are equally important, though in this enthusiastic polemic Hell gets the better of the argument (Damrosch 101). One thing I ve noticed about Blake is that he was a non conformist who put his political, religious and artistic ideas into his work. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is a good example of this. Essentially Blake disagreed with the old myth that good people went to heaven and bad people went to hell. He thought that every person had some good and bad in them. While Hakeem Olajuwon was one the most dominating centers that the NBA has ever seen, the defense usually didn t let him get easy buckets inside the paint. Or at least try not too. The offense that coach Tomjanovich used during the Houston Rocketsback to back championships relied heavily on Hakeem s post skills and the ability of their outside shooters to knock down wide open looks. This kind of offense is known as a 4 Out, 1 In Motion Offense and it is probably one of the easiest offenses that a team can use. This can cause a big time mismatch when the defense decides to start switching the screens. The post player will have a smaller player on him that he can easier post up on or one of the perimeter players will have the post defender on them and should easily take them of the dribble for a bucket. Additionally, the poor, women, and slaves made up the vast majority of Ancient Greece ( Can the population of Sparta and Athens be calculated? , n.d.). We can therefore say that the vast majority of the ruled had far worse lives than the rulers. And yet the democratic reforms instituted by Solon and later by Cleisthenes only peeled away rights for the middle classes and male citizens. As I mentioned in last week s assignment, I think this has largely to do with the ability of the middle classes to organize a sufficient demand against the rulers, and that Power concedes nothing without a demand (Douglass, 1857). To speak to this week s question then, I think it can be said that Ancient Greece was fundamentally an aristocracy, which is in essence an oligarchy. That would be the case with both Athens and Sparta. Both of these city states were ruled by a small minority of their overall populations (oligarchy), and those rulers obtained power primarily through class (aristocracy). The class divide appears less in Sparta, in that it was also a military dictatorship, but nevertheless, Sparta s elder council of the Gerousia was pulled from the aristocracy.(Brand, n.d.,

One method of doing so, is criminal profiling. Police use criminal profiling as an aid to identify the typology of individuals most likely to fit the suspectprofile. In this approach, evidence of a crimeis used to identify the characteristics of the criminal in relation to their personality and psychological state of mind. As well as demographic variables, such as age, race or geographic location, Investigators might use profiling to narrow down a field of suspects or figure out how to interrogate a suspect already in custody (Criminal profiling: the reality behind the myth (Winerman, L.2004). As the use of criminal profiling increases, empirical questions concerning its validity, reliability, and legal questions regarding its acceptability arise (Pinizzato, A. Finkel, N.1990). In a survey conducted, several psychologist and psychiatrist were asked about their views towards the validity of criminal profiling. The results of this survey found that only ten percent of psychologist and psychiatrist surveyed reported having any profiling experience and twenty five percent, considered themselves knowledgeable about profiling (Greene, E., Heilbrun, K. 2014, p.148). Fewer than twenty five percent of the individuals surveyed, believe that criminal profiling was scientifically reliable or valid (Greene, E.,
