A Summary Of The Ponca Tribe
Great Plains tribes share a history of events in the late 19th century. This essay focuses on the Ponca
tribe and the trial of Standing Bear, one of their chiefs. Other tribes experienced similar incidents of
callous disregard for legal rights and struggles to accept their fate of losing their tribal lands and
relocating to Indian Territory that barely sustained the people and shattered tribal customs and
practices. It is also a story of help provided by white Americans to resolve conflicts and restore the
Ponca to their rightful land (Brennan, Authors Note). The travails of the Ponca tribe are typical of 19th
century U.S. Indian relations experienced by Native Americans.
Discussion
The Ponca Story The Ponca signed several treaties with the United States after a 1817 peace treaty: a
trade agreement in 1825 and land cession in 1858 and 1865 to ensure military protection and
economic assistance. In the 1860s and 1870s, the Ponca almost starved after droughts, unproductive
bison hunts and constant threats to the Ponca by the Sioux threatened their existence. Rather than
honor treaty obligations, the U.S. gave Ponca land to the Sioux in 1868 that included all of Dakota
Territory (van de Logt). In 1877, Indian tribes, including the Ponca, were ordered to move to Indian
Territory in the south. After ten chiefs visited the new location and found the situation unsustainable
for farming or grazing, eight walked back and stopped at the Otoe and Omaha reservations. A letter

Motifs In Creation Myth
What is a motif you may wonder? What do they consist of and how do they change the thoughts on
how we were created? A motif is something that you see in one creation myth, that is found in many
others. Motifs show us that certain pieces of different religions are the same, or could be connected
completely. When the same motif is repeated over and over it can show us different connections and
new information on more than one creation myth. I will be explaining three different motifs, our
creator cares for their creations, the creator is invisible, and is the earth made of organic materials. I
find it important how the gods/higher power, cares for their creations, because without them we
wouldn t exist.
In most creation myths, the creator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Cheyenne creation myth, the God Maheo creates the sky, the light, water, and animals before
creating land. Maheo only had the power to create four things on his own, and turned to the help of his
creations. One little coot was able to swim to the bottom of Maheo s lake and retrieve mud, so that the
earth could be made. Once Maheo had the mud, he was able to make it grow and expand until he
could no longer carry it. Grandmother turtle was able to carry the ball of mud and it grew more once
placed onto her back. Maheo says that the Earth shall be known as Grandmother, and that her and all
of her offspring would be slow; because they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Maheo
felt that she shouldn t be lonely, so he pulled out his right rib and breathed on it. Moments later; the
first man stood and walked, but Maheo still didn t want man lonely in the void that Earth would be, so
he pulled out his left rib and breathed the first woman to be. He watched them grow, and build more
tribes each year. He created animals for food, clothing, etc, and made sure that his children would
have what they needed in order for survival. The myth says that Maheo cannot be seen, but that he is
everywhere watching over us. That is one of the few creation myths where our creator leaves behind
all of their creations. Like in the Theogony which is the greek creation myth, Prometheus created man
after four failed attempts and then left his creations behind. Then he was ordered by Zeus to be
tortured for making humans to god like. In the Norse creation myth, the Elder Eddas gave Odin
permission to create humans, he did so first while being drunk and vowed to never drink again. Once
sober, Odin re creates man and then protects, and watches over the deformed humans that he first
created. Our creators leave us but for what reason?

David Bruns Recommendation Essay
I am happy to recommend David Bruns for the science fair. I have known David for his entire life, I
am very familiar with his extracurricular involvement and his 4 H career spanning over the last 9 years
with my being his 4 H leader. I am also well acquainted with his commitment to serving his
community and mentoring. His knowledge comes by way of his many unique life experiences
including being an active member in the 4 H club. David has been elected to several terms as
President, Vice President, Treasurer, Historian and Photographer. At the county level David has been
twice elected president of the Federation/Youth Leadership Team and currently serves as vice

David sought to volunteer and/or job shadow at several medical facilities and was told by the HR
departments that because of HIPAA laws and insurance regulations he had to be 18 years old. David
thought if he had a name behind him to give him credibility in the medical world he could break down
those barriers the HR departments had set before him as a teenager. Using skills from his 4 H
background he formulated a plan and executed it. He started a 4 H Club, which is a 4 H club that has a
specific interest, David chose medical careers. To get the program off the ground, David used his
networking skills to enlist the help of the medical school at Southern Illinois University, where he is a
student in the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P4). Because of David s position in the P4, he
has been able to secure many speakers and offer up engaging hands on medical experiences for the 4
H Club members. The club moved beyond David s wildest dreams when he was interviewed for a
newspaper article and a Physician Assistant read the article. The PA who was intrigued by the idea of
teens getting a taste of medicine before spending a lot of money on education and realizing that
medicine was not for them decided to give the group a try. Through that article 4 H members are now
experiencing the practice of medicine first hand

Homeless in America
Homeless in America
When we are little we never see ourselves being homeless, we only have dreams of having a good life
that has family, love, lots of money, nice cars, and big houses; we never think maybe we might end up
homeless with nothing but the clothes on your back. Being American and in the land of opportunity
we see and hear of endless possibilities, but everyone does not get to enjoy the possibilities because
the possibilities are not really endless. Homelessness in America is a persistent, complex, and widely
occurring problem that incorporates many economic, social, and psychological dimensions. After
years of war and economic decline, the ranks of the homelessness have grown to include ... Show

Some homeless steal food to feed themselves or their families it s like you can go so many days
without food or to let your family go without food before you have that thought of just stealing to
provide. Some homeless panhandle and beg for money which is starting to be against the law due to
panhandlers starting to be violent, they use to be happy with what you gave them or really mad that
you did not give anything. Also there are laws that are considered to be criminalizing to the homeless
by restricting the sitting and sleeping areas allowed, prohibits begging, and permits them from
sleeping under bridges.
Policies with dealing with the homeless is that even though they are of a lower class then most being
treated with respect and them still having rights even though they do not pay taxes as human beings.
Policies of no soliciting signs are in front of stores to keep the homeless from scaring off customers.
More policies are still being processed about what is right and wrong about being homeless after
places to sleep and sit and other things.
Being homeless in America there programs that are out to help the best they can to get them off the
street and to make sure they have a place to sleep at night. In communities some churches try to help

As the bright, golden sun lazily rose in the early morning sky, Bridgette Becker sat in her plush bed
with her younger sister, Margot. The two girls were still very tired, as they had woken up much earlier

Christian Sayings
Within Christian circles, there are many different expressions and phrases that have become
commonplace. Among those heavily used sayings is the notion that Christians are to be in the world
but not of the world.
This phrase, that is often recited as if it were a direct quote from scripture, is used as a mantra by
many Christians to separated themselves from the world. So what does it actually mean for a follower
of Christ to be in the world but not of it, and does the phrase s common application aid the
advancement of the gospel?
Daniel Chinn, assistant professor of biblical and theological studies, said Christians started using the
phrase as an interpretation of a bible passage and though the phrase is often treated as scripture it is
not in the bible verbatim.
The phrase In the world but not of the world comes from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God is consistently saying all the way through This earth is good and my people are going to live here

of the story you ve got the incarnation, which I think is God s greatest statement to say My created
world is good, so good in fact, that I, the second person of the trinity, am going to come down and take
on the dirt of humanity, literally.
Though the phrase In the world but not of the world has truth that can be unpacked from it, Chinn said
the implication of how Christians commonly use the phrase is flawed because often it is used to justify
separation of themselves from their culture, which is not what scripture is calling them to do.
Some Christians hold a prospective that the culture is bad, Chinn said, and many separate themselves
from the culture by having all things Christian in their

Creating Variables Into A Created Scene Essay
1.0 Introduction. This report discusses the task of creating variables into a created scene in the
aforementioned Alice program. As previously mentioned, particular attention to good Human
Computer Interaction and usability was sustained throughout this period of development. Taking
usability into great measure; enabling the user to engage and interact with the animation and foremost
to ensure repetitive usage of the program for their enjoyment occurred. This report documents the
planning and construction of the variable methods, the chosen character in my animation uses in this
particular programme, through to completion. During the completion process, to increase usability I
critically analysed my programme, debugged it and solved any problems it had. On completion I
decided to allow one of my peers to use and give an individual report on said animation, this is
truthful to my knowledge. 2.0Method Whilst creating a new area in programming to my project,
keeping the user in mind, I decided to keep to keep the scene and the characters moderately the same;

that this particular character would be the only animated character in this particular scene; this being
adultPerson4. This enables the user to notwithstanding have the familiar comforting and inviting
elements of their previous visit, moreover, to accommodate familiarity, clarity and good usability. The

In 2002 the European Union agreed that from January 2005 international accounting
standards/international financial reporting standards (IASs/IFRSs) would apply for the consolidated
accounts of the EU listed companies (Barth, Landsman, and Lang, 2008). Starting from 2005,
IAS/IFRS adoption has been mandatory in all the member states of the European Union with the
ultimate goal of increasing transparency in financial reporting. This adoption of IAS/IFRS therefore
represents an extraordinary event for empirical research because evidence shows that the mandatory
adoption of IAS/IFRS in Europe results in better quality of financial reporting. In fact, empirical
studies provide some support to the notion that adopting IAS/IFRS improves the quality of financial
reporting and of public information (Palea, 2013).

Essay On The Story Of A Story
Early the next morning, Jerrit awoke the party and had everyone eat a hasty breakfast. After a telling
look at Sarah, he explained to them why he was bandaged and had Petrin help him to tighten the
bindings. While doing so, Petrin noticed that Jerrit s breathing was rapid and shallow. As they finished
their meager meal Dirac came into the camp followed by a single horse.
The raiding party is about six hours ahead of us at your human walking speed. If you had more horses,
we could quickly overtake them, but your other horses who escaped the attack are gone. I followed
their trail for an hour back toward your farm and this is the only horse I found.

They can return with the King s soldiers and they will be able to easily follow our trail. If we catch the
raiders, we will only follow them waiting until help arrives. Petrin did not like this plan, but he could
not dissuade the determined trio and Jerrit clearly needed help quickly. He worked with Sarah and
Philip to sort through the packs and they rapidly made up small bundles for Sarah and Phillip to carry.
While doing so, he gave them some advice. Jerrit mentioned that this was a Shadoch raiding party.
They are a brutal and very dangerous people. We rarely see them in Emradon and it is odd that the
path Dirac found leads to the southeast. The Shadoch do hire out as mercenaries, and they appear to
have been sent to attack us so it may have been a plot hatched by Stenland. We have not been on
friendly terms with them of late. It is all quite strange. But, you must be very careful if you get near
them.
Each of the children armed themselves with hunting daggers from the pile of supplies. Philip also
picked up a bow, similar to the one he had been using for practicing, and a quiver of arrows. When
they were ready, Sarah asked Clair to kneel and they were able to get Jerrit up on her and secure him
with a length of rope. Petrin then slowly led Clair with her inert load, up the hill. The last the children
saw of them, they were disappearing over the crest of the hill at the road.

Modern Day, Multi National Companies Are Becoming More...
In contemporary organizations where globalization and multi national companies are becoming more
popular, management requires flexibility in how to handle different issues and manage each employee.
Four areas of management that pertain to contemporary management are the approaches to
management, classical, behavioral, quantitative, and modern. Each of the approaches were practiced
commonly in the past, however in the modern day, organizations must incorporate each management
approach to different business situations and work environments. In the modern day, multi national
companies face issues such as culture shock, conflicting ethical standards, and working conditions that
vary between countries. With these varied cultures, managers must ... Show more content on

At Microsoft the chief executive officer is in charge of the company as a whole and holds the most
power while the executive vice presidents oversee each of the departments with managers overseeing
employees at the retail level. An advantage of this approach is that when issues occur at the retail level
such as technical issue that employees are unable to handle, the manager is available to solve these
minor issues. Weber describes this advantage of bureaucracies as the capability of attaining the highest
degree of efficiency since employees have knowledge of who handles which issues and employees are
also highly trained in their routine responsibilities (Schermerhorn et al. 2014). Alan Marsden shows
another advantage of bureaucracy through its use in banks, where the impersonal employee behavior
gives customers a sense of equality and the formal rules in place prevent larger issues such as banks
over borrowing (Marsden 2009). However due to the strict procedures, when larger issues occur, the
bureaucratic approach causes delays to communicate to higher executives on how to solve issues.
Critics have pointed out that the delays become a disadvantage in the modern day since management
must be flexible and adapt to different scenarios, however the rules and regulations in bureaucracy do
not allow these changes to occur easily (Schermerhorn et al. 2014). Overall, the

Analysis Of It s Like Everyone
It s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story
makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story (Patrick RuthFuss). When a baby is
brought into this world, the only piece of identity it attains from its mother and father is its name. The
rest of the way through life, that person which has been given life, has to find their own path and their
own identity. Although parents teach very dignified lessons of values, it is up to him/her to establish if
they want to adopt the ideals of his/her parents. Lisa Hill from Monkey Beach (Eden Robinson) goes

identity. In Monkey Beach, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lisa Hill has confronted many different forms of inequality throughout the novel. Lisa was walking
through a strip mall in a part of town called Terrace when she saw her friend Erica being chased by a
car full of white men verbally harassing her. Lisa then stepped in to stand up to the men while Erica
called her bigger brother. During that whole ordeal there were many bystanders who did not lend a
hand. Later that day, Lisa went to go meet her aunt Trudy when she told her that If you were some
little white girl, that would be true, but you re a mouthy Indian, and everyone thinks we re born sluts.
Those guys would have said you were asking for it and hot off scot free (Robinson, 255). Although
Lisa was just trying to protect her friend, no one decided to stand up to the white men and help a
teenage girl although there were many people watching. This displays the inequality that the regular
man feels towards the Indians. Furthermore, when Lisa s aunt Trudy was just a small teenager herself,
Lisa s grandmother was forced to send her away to a residential school because she was an Indian.
Trudy did not realize this and put her blame and hate on her mother cause a rift between her and her
mother. If Indian children were allowed to go to regular public schools and had equality between
different ways of life, the fissure between a mother and a daughter would not have been created.
Along with that Eden Robinson also fought for the equality for

Depression is caused by inequalities in societies that directly trickle down to the local people.
Disparities in the application of health care services and other social services have created major gaps
in the society. Ideally, the disparities have trickled down to the lifestyle of different people in the

Depression as a condition is a life threatening condition that affects the mental state of different people

Raft Of The Medusa And The World Is Too Much With Us

Romanticism
Romanticism emerged in the 18th 19th centuries (primarily in opposition to Neo Classism) as a way to
express, as Victor Hugo said, liberalism in literature. The Romantic way of thinking emphasized
freedom from rules, and individuality. Many works of art and pieces of literature were made following
this theme, among them the painting, Raft of the Medusa and the poem the The World is too Much
with us .
The Raft of the Medusa is a painting done by Theodore Gericault in the 1800s. It is modeled after the
tragedy that was the shipwreck of the French naval frigate, Méduse, and it depicts the survivors who
were adrift on the raft.
The poem, The World is too much with us is a sonnet written by the Englishman William Wordsworth
in 1802. The composition is a romantic and satirical piece criticizing the people of the modern world
for their materialistic values and their disregarding of nature.
Both of these works are the epitome of Romanticism, as they both highlight the focal points of
Romantic thought; interest in the common man, strong senses and emotions, awe of nature,
celebration of the individual, and the importance of imagination.
The Romantics enjoy the struggle of the common man , and judging by the attire of the men on the
Raft of the Medusa , they are peasants just poor, everyday guys. These men have been subjected to
this terrible fate by the actions of those more fortunate

Character Analysis Of Simon In Lord Of The Flies
In William Golding s Lord of the Flies a group of boys is trapped on a jungle island after a horrific
accident. During their time on this island, the boys struggle to fight against the ferocious side of
human nature in trying to avoid turning against each other. The character Simon is introduced and is
immediately portrayed as a kind, sensitive and logical boy. Living on this island starts to have a
negative effect on the boys and fights begin to break out over leadership. The little boys speak of the
beast , and the boys fear and paranoia causes them to turn on each other and act similar to animals.
Only Simon realizes that the beast is not real, and that the only real beast on the island is the
savageness of human nature. In realizing this and not being affected by the influence of the beast,
Simon shows he is more logical and is less savage than the rest of the boys and he demonstrates that
he does not belong on this godless island of unthinking boys. When the boys first crash on the island,
they attempt to maintain an illusion of civilization with meetings and try to define roles in their
miniature society. They elect Ralph as their leader and build a signal fire in order to alert ships that
they are trapped on the island. Simon tries to maintain order and care for the little children on the
island by feeding them and protecting them from the older boys. Simon s appearance is described as a
skinny, vivid little boy (Lord of the Flies, page 16) and he is shown to

Natural Evil
Short Essay on Hamartiology God created a world free of sin and where we could co exist with wild
animals, the lion with the sheep eating side by side and with us, without fear. I want to start form the
beginning so we can understand how and when sin and evil entered the world. This happened when
man (Adam) sinned against God; Adam disobeyed God by eating the fruit that God had said not to eat.

The Remains Of The Day By Kazuo Ishiguro And The Play...
Our most basic memory is the meaning of the word itself. When that word is flashed in front of us, our
minds immediately conclude that a memory is a recollection of a past event. But, out of the millions of
long and short term memories in the archives of our brains, what makes us remember specific events
and forget others? To what extent do memories serve as a guideline to the type of personality and
characteristics an individual displays? In the novel The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro and the
play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, memories are used for the understanding of main
characters. Ishiguro uses memories to narrate Stevens past working for royalty and his struggle to
transition into the modern world. Miller uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He will always try to live up to the high standards his father set for himself as he did that night. In
Death of a Salesman Willy is abandoned by his father at a very young age as well as his brother Ben
who leaves for Alaska where he makes a fortune. In addition, Willy and his son Biff are constantly in
dispute over Willy s opinion that Biff lacks a real job and has no purpose to his life. At Frank s
Chophouse, when Biff returns from an interview with a potential employer, Willy is expecting good
news. As the two go back and forth arguing and not listening to each other, Willy begins to ramble and
has a flashback from the past. Unaware of his surrounding and the conversation he is presently in, he
says, No, no! You had to go and flunk math! ... If you hadn t flunked you d ve been set by now!
(Miller 65) Willy is remembering the fact that Biff was not able to graduate high school because he
failed his math class. Willy, in distress, hurries into the bathroom and continues to babble while his
two sons, Biff and Happy, leave the restaurant abandoning their father. This memory that Willy recalls
shows that he feels responsible for his son s failure and will never forget the reason Biff did not end up
successful which ultimately led to the abandonment of father by son.
When reflecting on the past a sense of regret arises when feelings of missed opportunities are thought
of. In The Remains of the Day Stevens comes to the realization that he missed an opportunity

Krypton Research Paper
Krypton, the home planet of Superman and the radioactive material, kryptonite... Wait. Wrong
krypton. The krypton we are talking about is the kind you find on the periodic table, and even in many
lighting products, such as gas lasers. Although it is not a planet and can not quite stop the powers of
Superman, the element krypton has some pretty super qualities of its own.
History
Krypton was founded by the Scottish and English chemists, Sir William Ramsay and Morris William
Travers on May 30, 1898 ( The Element Krypton, n.d.). Their goal was to find noble gas elements in
the last unknown 0.05% of air by liquefying and evaporating air (Newton, 2010). Ramsay and Travers
were able to liquefy it by cooling the elements, primarily oxygen, nitrogen and argon, in air to the
point that they changed into a liquid state (around 320.42°F) (Newton, 2010). However, the air
warmed and cause the evaporation of the three main elements, resulting in the discovery of not only
krypton, but additionally xenon and neon (Newton, 2010).
Physical Description Krypton, atomic symbol of Kr, received its name from the Greek word kryptos,
meaning hidden (Newton, 2010). This name is quite fitting seeing as the element is a colorless,
odorless, and tasteless gas ( Krypton, 2007) at room temperature ( The Element ... Show more content

( Krypton, 2007). To put the small percentage into perspective, there are about 8,200 argon atoms,
184,000 oxygen atoms and 685,000 nitrogen atoms for every one krypton atom ( Krypton Element
Facts, n.d.). Krypton is formed in the Earth s crust when radioactive elements, such as uranium, are
broken down, and it is then harvested by liquefying and evaporating air, the same technique in which
it had been discovered (Newton,

What Is The Role Of The Single Market In The UK

considered less attractive to overseas investors. As a result, this in turn means city like Paris and
Frankfurt will take advantage in the situation and try to claim as much share of the advantageous

financial services sector because of all the harsh and sever EU regulations. For his situation is very
unlikely because the domestic home based organisations will still need to accept these regulations for
all other EU transactions. However, with brexit getting more certain and sable for the UK financial
market another question will be to know if the EU regulations for the UK would be a big burden for
their transactions outside the EU as financial regulations are still developing. It can be difficult to put a
monetary value on the impact of the regulations of brexit. It will be very likely that not all these
regulations would put the home based organisations in UK at a competitive disadvantage, as the EU is
the world s largest financial service exporter, besides, making a great amount of the world s financial

Slave Codes In The Slave
Most slaves could not read or write, and they were not allowed to be taught how to read or write,
therefore they found ways to communicate with each other in different forms that their owners would
not be able to understand. Sometimes codes were created by whites who were helping the slaves and
the slaves who had already escaped. Some examples of communication, also known as codes, are
songs, quilts, dancing, and drums. Songs were used in everyday life by African slaves. The slaves
called these songs negro spirituals. People such as Harriet Tubman and others used songs as a means
for communication amongst each other in their fight to gain freedom. Many slaves knew the secret
meanings of words from the negro spirituals, so they could be used to signal many things. For
example, Harriet Tubman used the song Wade in the Water to tell slaves who were trying to escape to
get off the trail and go into the water. This made sure that the dogs slavecatchers couldn t sniff out
their trail. Other slaves used songs as signals. For example, the Virginia slave Nat Turner, who
organized a revolt against slave owners, used the song Steal Away as a signal to call people together to
talk about their plans ( Joe Carter and the Legacy of African American Spirituals. ) The Underground
Railroad is a huge example of where slaves used codes to communicate. They used codes like bundles
of woods, drinking gourd, and load of potatoes, (Underground Railroad Secret Codes. Premium

Summary Of Steven King Why We Crave Horror Movies
Horror Movies
I think that we re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better and maybe
not that much better after all. In Why We Crave Horror Movies the author Stephen King argues that
everyone is a potential lyncher. I enjoy an occasional horror film that is well made. Most horror films
are not that scary. Horror films tend to be low quality and sometimes they are garbage. I have seen my
share of lousy horror films. I do watch horror films to be entertained and I enjoy the suspense.
Although I appreciate some horror films I disagree with Steven King s bold statements, and I agree

Essay On Petrarrchan Sonnet
Originally an Italian import, sonnet has become the most popular, almost the regular figure in English.
It originated in Sicily in the 13th Century with Giacomo da Lentino (1188 1240), a lawyer. The poetic
traditions of the Provençal region of France apparently influenced him, but he wrote his poems in the
Sicilian dialect. Some authorities credit another Italian, Guittone d Arezzo (1230 1294), with
originating the sonnet. The English word sonnet comes from the Italian word sonetto, meaning little
song. Some early sonnets were set to music, with accompaniment provided by a lute. The sonnet is the

He enlarged the function of the sonnet to political and moral criticism and this has been followed by
later poets. Finally the sonnet came to be used for any subject which a short, concentrated lyric would
afford to evolve. Hence, we have Wordsworth s Composed Upon Westminister Bridge , Keat s On
First Looking into Chapman s Homer , Shelley s England in 1819 , Elizabeth Barrett Browning s
Sonnets from the Portuguese and so many memorable sonnets by so many famous poets. Longfellow,
Jones Very, G. H. Boker, and E. A. Robinson are generally appreciated for writing some of the best
sonnets in America. William Ellery Leonard, Elinor Wylie, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and W. H. Auden
have done distinguished work in the sonnet and the sonnet sequence in this century.Already, the
sonnet form has taken a unique position in the literary field. But the question inevitably comes is that
why has it proved so popular? Perhaps ,though minute in extent, it has immense elasticity: it can have
room for story elements; it can stage a brief dramatic scene; it can present a series of philosophical
reflections; it can survey a vast variety of reflections, understandings and moods within a tightly

Summary Of Reproductionry In Auspicious Eggs
In society reproduction is one of the most important things that keeps our world s population growing.
In these three short dystopian stories there are different approaches on ideas on what reproduction
should be like and how it should be approached. Reproduction rights have an immensely big impact
on each of these stories in different circumstances but are very much alike. These three different
stories have different rules for the way they run their reproduction systems in their communities. Ten
with a Flag the way the society has to do with reproduction is by a ranking system. In this case the
people in the story find out how great their child is by ranking, so if the child is a ten it s perfect and if
the baby has a perfect ten with a flag, the flag means that the baby might have something troubled or
wrong about its persona. Amaryllis is about keeping society to a minimum. Auspicious Eggs is about
the Catholic Church and its involvement the reproductive system. All of these stories have harsh
endings if an individual can t do something to meet society s specifications about reproduction rules.
In Auspicious Eggs it describes if a baby is not fertile the baby does not have the right to live, if
women or men aren t fertile and they cannot produce new beings they are killed as a result. Ten With a

Inside Sport By Robert Drane Summary
There was a time when Billie Jean King was always in the news. Robert Drane writes about the
uphills of women s tennis for Inside Sport. Being a respected tennis athlete as a girl in the 1970s was
all but easy, but Billie Jean King demanded the respect she deserved. Drane shows the readers that
King altered the way women s sports were looked at, which led to an even bigger movement in
women s equality. King had always been a huge feminist advocate and Drane writes about her strength
as a player and a person. Using logical facts and King s credibility the article successfully shows how
King changed the course of women s tennis, when it seemed there was no hope.
First, Drane goes on to show the reader that King was highly respected in women s tennis. He states,

losing this match would set us back 50 years... It would ruin women s tennis and affect all women s
self esteem. After he beat Australia s Margaret Court, he dubbed himself as a hustler . King wanted to
prove herself and make Riggs eat his words as they say. So she did, when she won 6 4, 6 3, 6 3,

Hcg Injections For Weight Loss
Title HCG injections for weight loss: Fab or fad?
Description Obesity is one of the consistent side effects associated with the urban lifestyle today. A
number of weight loss programs including HCG injections are coming up purported to cure obesity.
What is HCG and why should you know of it?
HCG injections contain the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin typically secreted by the pregnant
mother s placenta following successful conception. It is reason behind the pink bar of a pregnancy test
strip attesting successful pregnancy. HCG is being used to deal with problems regarding conceiving
babies from quite some time by medical practitioners.
When did it all start?
The revelation that HCG can burn fat started first in the 1950 s when Dr. Albert T. Simeons, an
endocrinologist from Britain started using HCG injections to treat people with obesity. One of the
probable and not yet established role of human chorionic gonadotrophin is that it burns belly fat to
provide ATP or energy for the fetus, Dr. Simeons concluded from this belief that HCG must also
facilitate a rapid burning of fat from all portions of the body at all times. But no substantial cases of
actual weight loss through only HCG injections have come up till date. In a more recent time, Kevin
Trudeau in his 2007 book claimed that HCG injections were the magic secret to quick weight loss.
The funny part is Kevin is not even remotely associated with medicine or health; he is just another
shady businessman.

Andrew Jackson Indian Removal Act Essay
Andrew Jackson was a General in The United States army, and the 7th president, throughout his
presidency he experienced many struggles with the Native Americans like wars and land disputes. In
the 1830s he wanted to end these conflicts so he put in place the Indian Removal Act of 1830. I
believe Andrew Jackson rightly and correctly removed the Indians. Even though many Indians died
along the way Jackson had a reason behind what he did and should not be to blamed for their deaths.
One of Andrew Jackson s reason behind the Indian Removal Act was so that the United States could
achieve their goal of Manifest Destiny, which is the belief Americans had that God meant for their

This was called the Treaty of Doaksville. Though the Chickasaws went without problems, the
Seminole Indians did not. The Seminole tribe, which was originated in the Everglades area in Florida,
did not want to leave, they stayed in their home and fought for their land. In 1835, after the Indian
Removal Act was passed, the Seminoles started the Second Seminole War with the United States
army. The battle went on until 1842 and ended with only a couple of hundred of Seminoles left. At this
time the United States army said the Seminoles could stay. So even though they lost, it was still a
moral victory for the tribe. (Mahone 1998) The Cherokee Indians on the other hand faced conflicts
that were not like any of the above Indian tribes. They were the last tribe to fight for their land which
was in the Appalachian Mountains. The Cherokees were basically became their own country. They
had a developed Republican Government, and their own Constitution. They had many conflicts with
America though. For example, they had the same land claimed as Georgia causing a big problem that
ended up in the Supreme Court. In this case the judges could not decide who had claim of the disputed
land. After this, Andrew Jackson persuaded a small group of the Cherokees to sign the Treaty of New
Echota. This allowed the American Government ownership to the Cherokee territory, in return
America gave them new land west of the Mississippi River

Analysis Of The General Observation Is The Narrator Of Cane
posed as: Will a character come to terms with himself and achieve wholeness as a person? How will a
character find pride and acceptance in himself? Is there meaning, within this telling, for black people
in either the North or the South?
An unnamed Narrator navigates the space between reality and fable, enabling engagement with the
characters. For the purposes of this paper, the general observation is that Toomer is the Narrator of
Cane. Using a tone of authority, he narrates and judges his characters and their situations, as he links
racial groups and gender through an intimacy that he shares with the reader even when he allows his
own knowledge to be both limited and incomplete, perhaps as a caveat to his own racial views.

Cane s narrator often trivializes the women he speaks of, subjecting them to a privileged male gaze
and specific objectivity, despite their connection to the struggle for black value and humanity. As a
collage of related pieces, on their own, the characters of Cane struggle to own themselves, struggle
against white society, and struggle against their blackness and their past, generating a constant pull for
connection as a thematic struggle for self unity.
Toomer depends on evocative symbolic representation to carry the messages of Cane, and this
includes the movement, scent, and sounds of the titular sugar cane plant. The cane makes issue of the
work, location, and economics attached to the plant s value to the South, and to the black and white
people who do the work of production. It also serves to embody the experience of the painful southern
history of enslavement. Similarly, the Cotton Flower stands as a symbol of life, hope, and beauty
coming from a cruel, waterless, and barren land. A plant with a hard and thorny exterior, it grows amid
and in spite of Jim Crow, vestiges of chattel enslavement, and the powerless terrors of
disenfranchisement.
Dusk is a powerful symbol in Cane and this time of day occurs in nearly every piece. It is a moment of
mystery, secrets, threat, contention, and potential magic. Dusk also serves to remind the reader of how

Why Bother By Michael Pollan Analysis
In Michael Pollan s article Why Bother? he discusses how climate change is a serious threat to
humanity and needs to be addressed immediately. Pollan begins to discuss possible solutions but also
realizes that these solutions may not be easily achieved. There is no way to eliminate people who
make a conscious effort to help the advancement of climate change, but it is still important for others
to attempt to make changes to help save the environment. The famous economist, Adam Smith,
promoted the idea the division of labor has given us many of the blessings of civilization and about
the role the invisible hand plays in the supply and demand of the production of goods. Although these
goods are produced under specialization, the production of a good by a single entity in order to

World Myhtology The Golden Guide Analysis
To me, this passage just emphasizes the point that we all have distinctive outlooks on things. There is
a Spanish proverb that my mom used to say to me that reminds me of that Cada Cabeza es un mundo (
each mind is a world unto itself). Therefore, just because we see something in a particular way, does
not mean that everyone else see it in the same way. To illustrate, recently I went to the Metropolitan
Art museum with my friend, we walked all over, but I stop and admire a beautiful abstract painting of
Pablo Picasso, to me it was such an experienced like the painting was transmitting something to me, I
was able to feel and perceived something. However, my friend passed by the painting without even
noticing and simply did not call his attention. I believe that I saw something that made me emote so It
was my reality. However, reality can be deceiving and you can create your own illusion. In our World

Thank you for trying out . Those exact words were printed on the baseball list. I then got a text in
middle of class from friend saying that my name is not on the list. At first i thought it was an error
made by the coaching staff because at out of all the people how could i have been cut off like that? So,
my first intention was to text my coach. I asked him if i got cut off the team and if there was a mistake
made. But, I get a text saying see me at lunch . At that point, i knew i was cut. I was so confused. How
could a coach cut a player that was batting over 400 and was getting clutch hits against one of the best
schools in the game. A player that never complained and did what he was told since the start. I dealt
with all the annoying little things and provided for the team but instead of getting a little recognition, i
was just dropped. Was it something i did? Or did he simply not like me? I wanted answer but instead i
received pure nonsense and logical reasoning

  • 2. A Summary Of The Ponca Tribe Great Plains tribes share a history of events in the late 19th century. This essay focuses on the Ponca tribe and the trial of Standing Bear, one of their chiefs. Other tribes experienced similar incidents of callous disregard for legal rights and struggles to accept their fate of losing their tribal lands and relocating to Indian Territory that barely sustained the people and shattered tribal customs and practices. It is also a story of help provided by white Americans to resolve conflicts and restore the Ponca to their rightful land (Brennan, Authors Note). The travails of the Ponca tribe are typical of 19th century U.S. Indian relations experienced by Native Americans. Discussion The Ponca Story The Ponca signed several treaties with the United States after a 1817 peace treaty: a trade agreement in 1825 and land cession in 1858 and 1865 to ensure military protection and economic assistance. In the 1860s and 1870s, the Ponca almost starved after droughts, unproductive bison hunts and constant threats to the Ponca by the Sioux threatened their existence. Rather than honor treaty obligations, the U.S. gave Ponca land to the Sioux in 1868 that included all of Dakota Territory (van de Logt). In 1877, Indian tribes, including the Ponca, were ordered to move to Indian Territory in the south. After ten chiefs visited the new location and found the situation unsustainable for farming or grazing, eight walked back and stopped at the Otoe and Omaha reservations. A letter ... • 3. Motifs In Creation Myth What is a motif you may wonder? What do they consist of and how do they change the thoughts on how we were created? A motif is something that you see in one creation myth, that is found in many others. Motifs show us that certain pieces of different religions are the same, or could be connected completely. When the same motif is repeated over and over it can show us different connections and new information on more than one creation myth. I will be explaining three different motifs, our creator cares for their creations, the creator is invisible, and is the earth made of organic materials. I find it important how the gods/higher power, cares for their creations, because without them we wouldn t exist. In most creation myths, the creator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Cheyenne creation myth, the God Maheo creates the sky, the light, water, and animals before creating land. Maheo only had the power to create four things on his own, and turned to the help of his creations. One little coot was able to swim to the bottom of Maheo s lake and retrieve mud, so that the earth could be made. Once Maheo had the mud, he was able to make it grow and expand until he could no longer carry it. Grandmother turtle was able to carry the ball of mud and it grew more once placed onto her back. Maheo says that the Earth shall be known as Grandmother, and that her and all of her offspring would be slow; because they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Maheo felt that she shouldn t be lonely, so he pulled out his right rib and breathed on it. Moments later; the first man stood and walked, but Maheo still didn t want man lonely in the void that Earth would be, so he pulled out his left rib and breathed the first woman to be. He watched them grow, and build more tribes each year. He created animals for food, clothing, etc, and made sure that his children would have what they needed in order for survival. The myth says that Maheo cannot be seen, but that he is everywhere watching over us. That is one of the few creation myths where our creator leaves behind all of their creations. Like in the Theogony which is the greek creation myth, Prometheus created man after four failed attempts and then left his creations behind. Then he was ordered by Zeus to be tortured for making humans to god like. In the Norse creation myth, the Elder Eddas gave Odin permission to create humans, he did so first while being drunk and vowed to never drink again. Once sober, Odin re creates man and then protects, and watches over the deformed humans that he first created. Our creators leave us but for what reason? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the county level David has been twice elected president of the Federation/Youth Leadership Team and currently serves as vice president. David sought to volunteer and/or job shadow at several medical facilities and was told by the HR departments that because of HIPAA laws and insurance regulations he had to be 18 years old. David thought if he had a name behind him to give him credibility in the medical world he could break down those barriers the HR departments had set before him as a teenager. Using skills from his 4 H background he formulated a plan and executed it. He started a 4 H Club, which is a 4 H club that has a specific interest, David chose medical careers. To get the program off the ground, David used his networking skills to enlist the help of the medical school at Southern Illinois University, where he is a student in the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P4). Because of David s position in the P4, he has been able to secure many speakers and offer up engaging hands on medical experiences for the 4 H Club members. The club moved beyond David s wildest dreams when he was interviewed for a newspaper article and a Physician Assistant read the article. The PA who was intrigued by the idea of teens getting a taste of medicine before spending a lot of money on education and realizing that medicine was not for them decided to give the group a try. False Promises And Lies Of A Dad False Promises and Lies of a Dad I can remember it as if it were yesterday like every Saturday, allowing my robe to give me special powers and transform me into a super hero Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Batman...! My parents bedroom was adjacent to mine this night; I was in my room watching cartoons sitting on the edge of my bed when all of a sudden I heard my screaming like she never had before. I ran into their bedroom into the hallway entrance; I witnessed this terrifying scene has been etched in my mind ever since. I recall crying because both of my parents were arguing in such a way that it genuinely upset my feelings. My Dad s hands were placed around my Mom s neck, choking the life out of her. I stood ... On top of him not spending any time with me sometimes he wouldn t show up to pick me up left me feeling like a roller coaster ride during the fifty minute drive to the drop off location and wondering if Dad would be there. One weekend I was at my dad s house watching Power Rangers on the TV in the family room. He repeatedly called my name, but I did not hear him. My step mother came in there to tell me that my dad had been calling me and he was in the kitchen. When I walked into the kitchen, his voice resonated, Did you hear me calling you? I replied, No. He balled up his fist and socked me in the middle of my chest. I grabbed my chest and dropped to the floor crying. I could not believe what happened because I did not hear him calling my name. I did not understand why did he punch me in my chest. He then said, The next time I call you, you better answer me. When my dad dropped me off at our designated spot, his way of saying goodbye traumatized me. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it. With the palm of his hand touching the palm of my hand, he wrapped his four fingers around until the touched the top of my hand, then he placed his thumb in between my thumb before he squeezed it as tight as he could and wiggled all the bones in my hand back and forth. Among those heavily used sayings is the notion that Christians are to be in the world but not of the world. Starting from 2005, IAS/IFRS adoption has been mandatory in all the member states of the European Union with the ultimate goal of increasing transparency in financial reporting. This adoption of IAS/IFRS therefore represents an extraordinary event for empirical research because evidence shows that the mandatory adoption of IAS/IFRS in Europe results in better quality of financial reporting. Weber describes this advantage of bureaucracies as the capability of attaining the highest degree of efficiency since employees have knowledge of who handles which issues and employees are also highly trained in their routine responsibilities (Schermerhorn et al. 2014). Alan Marsden shows another advantage of bureaucracy through its use in banks, where the impersonal employee behavior gives customers a sense of equality and the formal rules in place prevent larger issues such as banks over borrowing (Marsden 2009). However due to the strict procedures, when larger issues occur, the bureaucratic approach causes delays to communicate to higher executives on how to solve issues. • 18. Raft Of The Medusa And The World Is Too Much With Us Aishah Tasneem October 20, 2015 Muharram 7, 1437 Fareeda Abdur Rahman Romanticism Romanticism emerged in the 18th 19th centuries (primarily in opposition to Neo Classism) as a way to express, as Victor Hugo said, liberalism in literature. The Romantic way of thinking emphasized freedom from rules, and individuality. Many works of art and pieces of literature were made following this theme, among them the painting, Raft of the Medusa and the poem the The World is too Much with us . The Raft of the Medusa is a painting done by Theodore Gericault in the 1800s. It is modeled after the tragedy that was the shipwreck of the French naval frigate, Méduse, and it depicts the survivors who were adrift on the raft. The poem, The World is too much with us is a sonnet written by the Englishman William Wordsworth in 1802. The composition is a romantic and satirical piece criticizing the people of the modern world for their materialistic values and their disregarding of nature. Both of these works are the epitome of Romanticism, as they both highlight the focal points of Romantic thought; interest in the common man, strong senses and emotions, awe of nature, celebration of the individual, and the importance of imagination. The Romantics enjoy the struggle of the common man , and judging by the attire of the men on the Raft of the Medusa , they are peasants just poor, everyday guys. The krypton we are talking about is the kind you find on the periodic table, and even in many lighting products, such as gas lasers. Although it is not a planet and can not quite stop the powers of Superman, the element krypton has some pretty super qualities of its own. History Krypton was founded by the Scottish and English chemists, Sir William Ramsay and Morris William Travers on May 30, 1898 ( The Element Krypton, n.d.). Their goal was to find noble gas elements in the last unknown 0.05% of air by liquefying and evaporating air (Newton, 2010). Ramsay and Travers were able to liquefy it by cooling the elements, primarily oxygen, nitrogen and argon, in air to the point that they changed into a liquid state (around 320.42°F) (Newton, 2010). However, the air warmed and cause the evaporation of the three main elements, resulting in the discovery of not only krypton, but additionally xenon and neon (Newton, 2010). Physical Description Krypton, atomic symbol of Kr, received its name from the Greek word kryptos, meaning hidden (Newton, 2010). Sometimes codes were created by whites who were helping the slaves and the slaves who had already escaped. Some examples of communication, also known as codes, are songs, quilts, dancing, and drums. Songs were used in everyday life by African slaves. The slaves called these songs negro spirituals. People such as Harriet Tubman and others used songs as a means for communication amongst each other in their fight to gain freedom. In Why We Crave Horror Movies the author Stephen King argues that everyone is a potential lyncher. I enjoy an occasional horror film that is well made. Most horror films are not that scary. Horror films tend to be low quality and sometimes they are garbage. I have seen my share of lousy horror films. I do watch horror films to be entertained and I enjoy the suspense. Although I appreciate some horror films I disagree with Steven King s bold statements, and I agree with some of his other statements. • 27. Essay On Petrarrchan Sonnet Originally an Italian import, sonnet has become the most popular, almost the regular figure in English. It originated in Sicily in the 13th Century with Giacomo da Lentino (1188 1240), a lawyer. The poetic traditions of the Provençal region of France apparently influenced him, but he wrote his poems in the Sicilian dialect. Some authorities credit another Italian, Guittone d Arezzo (1230 1294), with originating the sonnet. The English word sonnet comes from the Italian word sonetto, meaning little song. Some early sonnets were set to music, with accompaniment provided by a lute. The sonnet is the emphatic statement of a dramatized self, that appeals to an imagined listener ... Finally the sonnet came to be used for any subject which a short, concentrated lyric would afford to evolve. Hence, we have Wordsworth s Composed Upon Westminister Bridge , Keat s On First Looking into Chapman s Homer , Shelley s England in 1819 , Elizabeth Barrett Browning s Sonnets from the Portuguese and so many memorable sonnets by so many famous poets. Longfellow, Jones Very, G. H. Boker, and E. A. Robinson are generally appreciated for writing some of the best sonnets in America. William Ellery Leonard, Elinor Wylie, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and W. H. Auden have done distinguished work in the sonnet and the sonnet sequence in this century.Already, the sonnet form has taken a unique position in the literary field. But the question inevitably comes is that why has it proved so popular? Perhaps ,though minute in extent, it has immense elasticity: it can have room for story elements; it can stage a brief dramatic scene; it can present a series of philosophical reflections; it can survey a vast variety of reflections, understandings and moods within a tightly organized ... • 28. Summary Of Reproductionry In Auspicious Eggs In society reproduction is one of the most important things that keeps our world s population growing. In these three short dystopian stories there are different approaches on ideas on what reproduction should be like and how it should be approached. Reproduction rights have an immensely big impact on each of these stories in different circumstances but are very much alike. These three different stories have different rules for the way they run their reproduction systems in their communities. Ten with a Flag the way the society has to do with reproduction is by a ranking system. In this case the people in the story find out how great their child is by ranking, so if the child is a ten it s perfect and if the baby has a perfect ten with a flag, the flag means that the baby might have something troubled or wrong about its persona. Amaryllis is about keeping society to a minimum. Auspicious Eggs is about the Catholic Church and its involvement the reproductive system. All of these stories have harsh endings if an individual can t do something to meet society s specifications about reproduction rules. In Auspicious Eggs it describes if a baby is not fertile the baby does not have the right to live, if women or men aren t fertile and they cannot produce new beings they are killed as a result. • 29. Inside Sport By Robert Drane Summary There was a time when Billie Jean King was always in the news. Robert Drane writes about the uphills of women s tennis for Inside Sport. Being a respected tennis athlete as a girl in the 1970s was all but easy, but Billie Jean King demanded the respect she deserved. Drane shows the readers that King altered the way women s sports were looked at, which led to an even bigger movement in women s equality. King had always been a huge feminist advocate and Drane writes about her strength as a player and a person. Using logical facts and King s credibility the article successfully shows how King changed the course of women s tennis, when it seemed there was no hope. First, Drane goes on to show the reader that King was highly respected in women s tennis. He states, After all, she won a total of 12 grand slam singles titles, including six Wimbledons, a total of 39 grand slam titles altogether, and had celebrated rivalries with Margaret Court, Chris Evert, and Martina Navratilova. • 30. Hcg Injections For Weight Loss Title HCG injections for weight loss: Fab or fad? Description Obesity is one of the consistent side effects associated with the urban lifestyle today. A number of weight loss programs including HCG injections are coming up purported to cure obesity. What is HCG and why should you know of it? HCG injections contain the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin typically secreted by the pregnant mother s placenta following successful conception. It is reason behind the pink bar of a pregnancy test strip attesting successful pregnancy. HCG is being used to deal with problems regarding conceiving babies from quite some time by medical practitioners. When did it all start? The revelation that HCG can burn fat started first in the 1950 s when Dr. Albert T. Simeons, an endocrinologist from Britain started using HCG injections to treat people with obesity. One of the probable and not yet established role of human chorionic gonadotrophin is that it burns belly fat to provide ATP or energy for the fetus, Dr. Simeons concluded from this belief that HCG must also facilitate a rapid burning of fat from all portions of the body at all times. But no substantial cases of actual weight loss through only HCG injections have come up till date. In a more recent time, Kevin Trudeau in his 2007 book claimed that HCG injections were the magic secret to quick weight loss. The funny part is Kevin is not even remotely associated with medicine or health; he is just another shady businessman. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Andrew Jackson Indian Removal Act Essay Andrew Jackson was a General in The United States army, and the 7th president, throughout his presidency he experienced many struggles with the Native Americans like wars and land disputes. In the 1830s he wanted to end these conflicts so he put in place the Indian Removal Act of 1830. I believe Andrew Jackson rightly and correctly removed the Indians. Even though many Indians died along the way Jackson had a reason behind what he did and should not be to blamed for their deaths. One of Andrew Jackson s reason behind the Indian Removal Act was so that the United States could achieve their goal of Manifest Destiny, which is the belief Americans had that God meant for their country to be expanded from east to west coast. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was called the Treaty of Doaksville. Though the Chickasaws went without problems, the Seminole Indians did not. The Seminole tribe, which was originated in the Everglades area in Florida, did not want to leave, they stayed in their home and fought for their land. In 1835, after the Indian Removal Act was passed, the Seminoles started the Second Seminole War with the United States army. The battle went on until 1842 and ended with only a couple of hundred of Seminoles left. At this time the United States army said the Seminoles could stay. So even though they lost, it was still a moral victory for the tribe. (Mahone 1998) The Cherokee Indians on the other hand faced conflicts that were not like any of the above Indian tribes. They were the last tribe to fight for their land which was in the Appalachian Mountains. The Cherokees were basically became their own country. They had a developed Republican Government, and their own Constitution. They had many conflicts with America though. For example, they had the same land claimed as Georgia causing a big problem that ended up in the Supreme Court. In this case the judges could not decide who had claim of the disputed land. After this, Andrew Jackson persuaded a small group of the Cherokees to sign the Treaty of New Echota. This allowed the American Government ownership to the Cherokee territory, in return America gave them new land west of the Mississippi River ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How will a character find pride and acceptance in himself? Is there meaning, within this telling, for black people in either the North or the South? An unnamed Narrator navigates the space between reality and fable, enabling engagement with the characters. For the purposes of this paper, the general observation is that Toomer is the Narrator of Cane. Cane s narrator often trivializes the women he speaks of, subjecting them to a privileged male gaze and specific objectivity, despite their connection to the struggle for black value and humanity. As a collage of related pieces, on their own, the characters of Cane struggle to own themselves, struggle against white society, and struggle against their blackness and their past, generating a constant pull for connection as a thematic struggle for self unity. Toomer depends on evocative symbolic representation to carry the messages of Cane, and this includes the movement, scent, and sounds of the titular sugar cane plant. The cane makes issue of the work, location, and economics attached to the plant s value to the South, and to the black and white people who do the work of production. It also serves to embody the experience of the painful southern history of enslavement. Similarly, the Cotton Flower stands as a symbol of life, hope, and beauty coming from a cruel, waterless, and barren land. A plant with a hard and thorny exterior, it grows amid and in spite of Jim Crow, vestiges of chattel enslavement, and the powerless terrors of disenfranchisement. Dusk is a powerful symbol in Cane and this time of day occurs in nearly every piece. It is a moment of mystery, secrets, threat, contention, and potential magic.
