Essay Comparing Dulce Et Decorum Est And Futility
Wilfred Owen combines realism with a romantic lyric poignancy and a visionary mode that
enables him to lead us to a true understanding of the personal costs of war. His veracity and close
proximity to World War one confronts us as well as shows compassion for the young men that
fought. Both his poems Dulce et Decorum estand Futility explore the psychological, physical and
the futile costs that war brought upon us. Owen s poetic skills, vivid language and sensory
imagery express his bitter animosity of those who encourage war in Dulce et Decorum and the
pointlessness of war and perhaps life itself in the poem Futility.
Psychological

Futility starts with Move him into the sun . The verb move is an inexact word however, we feel
the movement has to be gentle in contrast to Dulce et Decorum est where the body was flung
into the Wagon. Straight away we are able to see the contrast of how Owen presents physical
death in both poems. Both poems abundantly use imagery in slightly differently ways; Dulce et
Decorum est the imagery is vividly graphic and grotesque done deliberately to make us feel
uncomfortable. The first stanza begins with soldiers trudging through the ubiquitous sludge and
the dual adjective knock kneed shows physical exhaustion and fatigue of the young men that
instantly reverses this idea of them being noble and healthy fighting. Followed by the visceral
imagery the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs . This effectively recreates the
scene Owen witnessed to involve the audience by encouraging them to hear at every jolt the
physical horror the soldiers suffered and invoke their pity. Owen uses imagery more subtle in
Futility. He creates this repetitive image of the sun as having revitalising ability to bring back the
dead and present the realness of physical death on

The Significance of Lily Bart s Death (House of Mirth)
Assignment one Discuss the significance of Lily Bart s death at the end of The House of Mirth.
You should consider the implications both for the protagonist s social milieu and for women in
general at this point in American history. The significance of Lily Bart s death. As a writer looking
towards the twentieth century Wharton faced the challenge of telling the history of women past the
age of thirty. The age of thirty was established as the threshold by nineteenth century conventions.
The conventions of girlhood and marriage ability; a psychological observation about the formation
of the female identity. Wharton shared Freud s pessimism about the difficulties of change for
women. In his essay femininity ,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She cannot fully possess herself could this be the meaning behind the word that is left unsaid?
Could the word she wanted to tell Selden be freedom ? Earlier in the novel when walking with
Selden in the park, Lily listens as he defines what success means for him, My idea of success,...is
personal freedom...from everything from money, from poverty...from all the material accidents
(p.60). It appears that both Lily and Selden were too late in realising that it was in fact this
freedom they both desired. The withholding of the word ultimately denies the reader access to
Lily s dying thoughts. However, it is this switch from omniscient narration to free indirect
discourse that allows the reader to fill this textual space . Wharton manages to position the novel
as psychological realism bordering on modernism. 7 Lily is repeatedly defeated. The aunt who
should be there to rescue her disinherits her; her friend Bertha Dorset should be there for her, yet
she throws her out in order to protect her own reputation; the man who should have faith in her,
cannot trust her long enough to overcome his own emotional meticulousness. We see Lily being
taken from the heights to her death in an unrelenting fall.8 Lily realises that her status as a lady
does not exempt her from the

Essay Passion of the Christ
The Passion of the Christ is one of many films about the life of Jesus but this particular one is
different to the others. Released in 2004, directed by Mel Gibson and filmed in the ancient
Aramaic language, `The Passion focuses mainly on the death of Christ and shows us the full extent
as to what he suffered to save mankind.
Before seeing The Passion of the Christ I hadn t heard much about it except that it was very
violent and politically incorrect. In fact I hadn t seen or heard a review that said if it was good
or bad or if it was well acted or if it was worth the watch. Everyone just seemed to be interested in
saying that it is too violent, the movie should not have been made and Mel Gibson shouldn t be
making money from a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is definitely something in this film for everyone. Even if you can t bear to watch the
violence, which is so predominant throughout the movie, there is a lot of emotion, action and even
horror that will keep any audience gripped. In this film Gibson uses the devil in the form of a
person and he shows us how man is tempted by evil which results in jumps and frights better than
most horror films out these days.
As far as the violence is concerned, The Passion was very gruesome and disturbing to watch at
some points. Some people think it is too much to see someone getting their skin ripped off with
metal claws but I think it was a necessary part of the ordeal to which Christ was subjected and it
brings home the enormity of what happened. Other films made his crucifixion out to be a graceful
and peaceful death almost leaving out the fact that he was nearly flogged to death before even
touching his cross.
This is not the type of film where you can complain about the story line or say you didn t like the
ending, but you do come with an expectation of how you would like them to portray the story.
For me I was more than satisfied with how they did it but some more religious people might not
like the way little things were changed from the Bible. In The Passion when Judas Iscariot hung
himself he didn t say he was sorry to god but we could see that he regretted doing what he did and
we knew he was sorry. Gibson also

Comparing Intersex And Transgender Females Deserve A Place...
Intersex and transgender females deserve a place of belonging in the world of sport. Society s
need to categorize humans makes it difficult for minorities to find a sense of belonging. Humans
are easily given labels by society as gay, straight, black, asian, female, male etc. This system works
for the majority of people, and those who fit in do not see a necessity to change these constructs. As
Judith Butler argues in her essay Undoing Genderwe must remake the definition of human by
deconstructing our preconceived notion of humanity and continuously reassembling it. Butler
eloquently states This means we must learn to live and to embrace the destruction and re

Physicist Ira Hammerman discovered that in a set of swimming and running races woman s world
records were consistently about 90 percent of the men s world record. Further research proved this
ratio true across diverse sports (Meyer). Many believe that a male to female transgender holds an
unfair competitive advantage against a cisgender female because they were born as males and
therefore retain some of the advantages that come with masculinity. These advantages go beyond
the biological differences in gender which can be equated with hormonal treatment. In her essay
Essentialism and Experience Bell Hooks discusses the effect of male privilege. She argues that
male students, who have spent most of their lives benefitting from male privilege, do not fully
understand the passion of experience in a classroom. Similarly we can explore the benefits of
male privilege in sport which is a drastically male dominant aspect of society. A study at the
University of Southern California uncovered that L.A. based broadcast affiliates devote only 3.2
percent of airtime to women s sport (Good). Iris Young builds on this societal imbalance in her
essay Throwing Like a Girl. Young explains how societal structures have a psychological effect on
female performance. She argues that the fact that women cannot throw as far as men is not simply
due to the biomechanical differences between genders but rather

Examples Of Post Colonialism In Things Fall Apart
The novel Things Fall apart is a post colonial novel written by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe in
1958, before Nigerian sovereignty. The novel portrays the life of Okonkwo, an Ibo head and local
wrestle champion in Nigerian village of Umuofia. The novel is divided into three parts, the first
parts talks about his family and personal history, the customs and society of the Ibo, and the second
and third sections introduce the influence of British colonialismand Christian missionaries on the
Ibo community during the late 1800s. Achebe provides the examples of post colonialism through
the symbolic representations of the colonizers, the introduction of their new religion, the creation of
their own government, and explains how the colonizers have caused them to diverge from their

The Framers Of The U.s. Constitution Essay
Introduction The majority of people, if not all, by human nature are greedy and work toward
their own desires and betterment. This natural instinct to protect one s self interest actually is a
positive force in the world. People will naturally work toward improving their station in life and
the innovative ideas that are unleashed and actions that are taken in these pursuits improve other
people s lives as well. The issue begins when this greed grows unchecked and becomes a desire
to have power over others. History has long shown that people who have power, especially power
protected by a governing body, should be held accountable. A community of people should never
assume that those they have elected to govern them possess greed that is more virtuous than
individual greed. The Framers of the U.S. Constitution recognized this abuse of power and were
intent to put in place a system that included separation of powers and checks and balances to
protect American citizens from tyranny. Although the Constitution does not specifically address
term limits on public servants in government leadership, there is evidence that some of the
Framers understood that the negative effects of power hungry public officials. During the
Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin made a speech and he said there are two passions
which have a powerful influence on the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice; The love
of power and the love of money. What I will be addressing in this paper

Ikea Current Event
Background Ikea was founded in 1943 when Ingvar Kamprad was given the Ikea name by his
father. Ikea stands for; Ingvar Kamprad elmtaryd Agunnaryd, the son s first and last name and
the farm and village where he grew up. The first Ikea sold small items such as pencils, table
runners and nylon stockings, all for exceptionally affordable prices. Ingvar knew he had found a
system that worked, by 1945 he had expanded. Ingvar started advertising in local newspapers and
began a do it yourself mail order service, where goods were transported by the local milk van to
the train stations. In the early 1950 s Ikea published a magazine discovering that customers wanted

Another of Ikea s core competencies is their ability to create a positive atmosphere and create
enthusiasm within each store through effective design. Since the store is designed in a circle,
the concept for the store layout allows one to see all the merchandise in the entire store by
simply moving one direction. The aisles are wide to allow for merchandise inspection and
constant flow of traffic, merchandise is fully assembled and displayed for viewing and product
testing. Ikea also houses a restaurant, kids playroom, and staged room displays to allow for
better visualization and overall atmosphere. Ikea s work structure for employees also helps set
the atmosphere and showcase employee dedication and enthusiasm. On a regular basis Ikea hosts
Anti bureaucracy Week, during which executives work on the shop floor and tend to the registers.
Customizing local markets to reflect individual cultures is another of Ikea s core competencies
that have allowed them to be able to hold on to a large market of global lower middle to middle
class consumers, something that even Wal mart has yet to accomplish. And with just 5 10% of the
furniture market accounted for in each country Ikea operates in, there is plenty of room for growth.
Awareness of our brand is much bigger than the size of our company, states CEO Anders Dahlvig.

The Dividing Lien of Plato s Allegory of the Cave Essay
Plato s allegory of the cave, located in Book VII of The Republic is one of the most famous
allegories in which he has created. This simile touches base on a number of philosophical ideas
which Plato developed over the progression of The Republic (Plato, G.M.A Grube, 1993), the
most noticeable being the dividing line. The dividing line is the point between the world of ideas
where we live and the world of the forms which is in the heavens. This allegory of the cave helps
people understand the theory on which philosophyis based. It is also in this Book where the
education of the guardians is outlined. We are asked in Book VII of The Republic to imagine a

When the prisoner turns his head towards the light of the fire his eyes hurt him and he is
confused because he is unable to see the objects of the shadows he had been subjected to his
entire life. It is because of this pain and confusion that the prisoner wishes to return to the life
that he is accustomed to, and the reality he knows, the world of the shadows. We are asked to
envision the stubbornness displayed by this prisoner to leave the world of the shadows, a
stubbornness which causes him to be dragged into the sunlight. Upon seeing the light of the sun
the prisoner is temporarily blinded, unable to see anything around him, blinding him more than
when he was a prisoner of the cave. Eventually the prisoner s vision adjusts and he is able to see

question the colours and objects around him. He questions what it is that causes him to being able
to see all the things he can, compared to only seeing poor reflections of objects in the cave. The
prisoner eventually concludes that it is the sun which illuminates all around him and is the source
of his sight. This now knowledgeable individual remembers the others who are still trapped in the

Throughout this experiment we have learned a great deal more about electricity and how it is
created. Before this was performed research was done on our materials and their functions, hoping
to be more educated on how they would help us solve our problem. We were able to make a well
educated hypothesis from our newly found information. Our prediction was that the lime would
have the most voltage because in our research we found that it has the most citric acid in it. Citric
acid is modeling the chemical energy in a battery causing the most voltage. The independent
variable applied was the type of fruit tested while the dependent variable was the voltage measured
in the multimeter. Some of the controls kept consistent were the types of nails, the type of
multimeter, the DCV setting on the multimeter, the nail placement, and the wire placement. Our
hopes for the outcome of this experiment is to have successfully created three fruit batteries and for
us to compare their voltages.
Materials and Methods For the experiment gather a lime, an orange, an apple, a zinc nail and a
copper nail to model the essential parts of a battery. The zinc nail represents the negative charge
while the copper nail imitates a positive charge. To measure this energy created in the fruit an
analog multimeter was used. The procedure used is below.

my left eye and believed I was in another land. As I was traveling through the water to find

Fascism And Nazism Similarities
Fascism and Nazism. Both once prominent forms of government during the 20th century, and now
the number of countries that use either one of these governments is diminishing. Fascism and
Nazism both emerged because of a general crisis of the European political system during the late
19th century to the end of World War 1. Fascism
was motivated by the fears of of social as well as
political disintegration, and of political revolution on the part of both ruling of the lower and
middle classes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). Europe would later see many Nazi and Fascists
movements during the time period between World War 1 and World War 2; however, in only Italy
and Germany did these forms of government manage to come to power and develop into their
respective regimes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). While these two once prominent governments
share some similarities, they also share many differences.
Fascism first exploded onto the political scene during the 1919 as the first mass movement of of
the middle class citizens in both Italy as well as Germany. In this political party, important sections
of the economic and political establishments sought out to attempt to preserve the status quo in the
revolutionary times (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). This form of government appealed to many
lower and middle class citizens because it made it seem that they were at control of the political
party. Fascism was popular to the public in general just because it brought out a

Argument Essay On World Hunger
Education is a very powerful weapon, one that isn t available to many however if it were, we
could solve many issues within the world. The biggest and most fundamental problem which can
be seen globally is, world hunger. The sad reality is that this is an issue and one that not many are
talking about. In his article Frederic Seebohm proclaims that the world bankestimates that there are
now one billion absolute poor in the world (Seebohm 5). He continues to define absolute poor as
those whose condition of life is so degraded by disease, illiteracy, malnutritionand squalor as to
deny its victims basic human necessities (4). The fact that there are so many hungry people in the
world today is mind boggling when you think about it. We are well into the 21st century. We now
have the ability to communicate instantaneously with people all over the world. The collected
knowledge of humanity, is literally at our fingertips via smartphones in our hands. Now some may
assume that world hunger is still a grave issue simply because there is not enough food to feed
everyone. However recently scientists who have studied world hunger, have found that the world
produces more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet. The main cause of worldwide
hunger is poverty. As R. C. Pickett mentions the the world has at present 1.5 billion hectares of
arable land that remains uncultivated (31). The problem isn t that there isn t enough land, the issue
remains with the coordination of food production. Millions of people around the world are simply
too poor to buy food. They also lack the monetary resources to grow their own food, such as the
means to harvest, process, and store food. The interaction of domestic animals within the cropping
systems needs to be intensively revaluated. A solution that Pickett suggests includes governments
and businesses interacting to provide a favorable price and availability structure of the necessary
inputs for adequate production, and to supply needed economical processing, storage, transport, and
utilization systems (32). His solution is to aim more government intervention as he believes that
much more food could be produced at least in certain areas but is not, simply because there is no

Ancient Egypt History
Egyptian History Egypt is a county whose history dates back to at least 2600 BCE. With that
long of a timeline, it is easy to understand how diverse and interesting their history is. The main
part of Egypt s history has been divided into three main sections, the Old kingdom, the Middle
Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. Each kingdom has it s own stories to tell that make it
completely different from the last. From the culture to the pharaohs that were ruling and even the
innovations that they were able to achieve, each kingdom was able to flourish in it s own way. The
Old Kingdom of Egyptis believed to have started around 2686 BCE and have lasted to around
2180 BCE (Duiker). The capital of the Old Kingdom is believed to have been in Memphis. During

(Duiker) when Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II was able to reunited Upper and Lower Egypt

reasons (Duiker). The Middle Kingdom showed an age of transformation with the capital being
moved to Thebes (Metropolitan). Art was also transformed during this time. They were able to
produce sculptures and monuments out of large stones (Giotto). These would be dedicated to the
god like figures and the pharaohs. Another advancement was that of writing. Writing had already
began toward the end of the Old Kingdom for records, but now it was used to record and tell the
stories that were normally passed down through generations orally. The Egyptians also learned how
to use the Nile River to their advantage. They were able to use its flooding to help provide the soil

Functions, Roles, And Activities Of Managers
Explain the functions, roles, and activities of managers. Research two companies within the last 3
years, not described in the book, and discuss what managerial characteristics were essential to lead
change.
Controlling, coordinating, staffing, and planning are the key functions that managers play in an
organization (Lussier, 2012). Managers control and coordinate resources to achieve set goals and
objectives. They are involved in both the formulation and implementation of strategies in the
organization. Managers handle staffing the company. The manager is tasked with the responsibility
to recruit the best talents for the business. They create job descriptions, advertise vacancies, and
organize interviews. In small organizations, the manager is also in charge of payroll. The manager
communicates with other workers to keep the workplace running. The manager ensures the
workplace is functioning efficiently by communication responsibilities and tasks. The manager also

The Movie The Spotlight
Leadership in the Spotlight
Lights, Camera, Action! Everybody knows and loves Noah and Allie. All you have to say is
their names or quote one line, If you re a bird, I m a bird, and the shrieking girls go OH MY
GOD! I love the Notebook! The whole movie is about their love. Nobody who s seen the movie
would fail to know the names of these lead characters, but most of them could not tell you the
name of Noah s best friend or the name of Allies cousin whom she s visiting. These characters
are crucial to the story and an important part of these characters lives and back ground for the
movies purpose, but most people fail to see here significance. The same goes for a leader or
leadership position. It s easy to see the people in the spotlight, front and center, but it s when you
finally look in the shadows that you realize more is happening than what you saw at first glance.
This topic, of leadership appears in William James article, The Social Value of the College Bred,
which features a topic in which he expresses college students using their education and experience

when they seem them, which in turn allows them to help build a stronger democracy. James begins
his article by expressing what people could gain from college and technical schools. He explains

Character Analysis Of Tambu s Story, InDeath
Tambu s Nervous Condition I was not sorry when my brother died (pg. 1). From this opening
line, we learn a plethora of information about Tambu. She clearly does not have a positive
relationship with her brother. Her emotional strength is another characteristic we can gather
because she has no emotional connection to her brother and can simply disregard everything
that he ever did as soon as he is gone from the world. Tambu is also not willing to follow societal
norms for how one should deal with death, so Tambu is willing to upset established order and
challenge it based on what she believes. Every one of these characteristics can be derived from this
one line on Tambu. She is a rather complex character and changes drastically... Show more content

Thankfully, Tambu has finally had enough of listening to her brother stating, My concern for
my brother died an unobtrusive death (pg. 21). Tambu does not engage with her brother, rather
she simply decides to stop allowing him to have power over her. The lock of a conflict between
her brother is important because it conveys that Tambu truly is the one who has the power at this
moment, because she can completely forget about her brother and move on with her life. While
trying to move on with her life, Tambu tries to earn enough money to start going to school and
leads to a fascinating encounter with an elderly couple. An elderly tells Tambu, I know the
Governor is doing a lot for the natives in the way of education (pg. 29). This crucial moment
highlights a critical issue facing Tambu, her race. She faces double imperialism by both being
black and being a woman. The elderly couple also diminishes her as a human being by referring
to her as a native, as if having been born in the country is something to be ashamed of. It is very
similar to the way that Nhamo used language meant for a dog. Tambu cannot be treated just as a
person who can do anything, so Tambu struggles with how to overcome the seemingly
insurmountable biases that people have against her. She also struggles with the impossible task of
facing imperialism. Her mother states, They have been speaking nothing but English for so long

Character Analysis Of Louise Mallard In Kate Chopin s...
Louise Mallard is the protagonist of Kate Chopin s, 1984, short story, Story of an Hour . An
intelligent, independent lady, Louise comprehends the right path for women to carry on, yet her
thoughts and emotions definitely do not immediately mirror the path. At the point when her sister
informs her that Brently, her husband, has passed on, she reacts with guilt and grief. Louise s
vicious response quickly demonstrates that she is a passionate, decisive lady. She realizes that she
should weep for Brently and dread for her own certain future. However, rather she feels delight at
her newly discovered autonomy. Louise is not unsympathetic and realizes that she will feel sadness
for her husband. Louise isolates herself, performing her own type of self cooping.
Brently Mallard, Louise s husband, as far as anyone knows was killed in a train accident. In spite
of the fact that Louise recalls Brently as a kind and cherishing man, simply being married to him
made him a harsh factor in her life. Brently arrives home ignorant that there has been a train
accident. Even though Brantly appears for only one sentence, his impact was enormous. He
unintentionally kills his own wife. His character is very strong and drastically changes the ending
of what could have been, an understanding.
Go away. I am not making myself ill. No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open
window (65). Louise s friend, Josephine attempted to coax Louise to leave her room and that
was her response. That sentence brings up a new piece of symbolism, the elixir of life. When it
comes to setting, not much is said exactly where. Readers can only assume it is their family
home since she goes into her room to cry and rethink life. This is the elixir of life. The room has
one window and very comfortable, armchair facing it. Louise sinks into that armchair. Her
sinking into the chair is also a reflection on how she feels emotionally. The chair is depression,
and her soul is being engulfed. Looking through the window she can see the top of trees. She
could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new
spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air (65). These sentences have a very

The World Economic Power And Its Impact On The Economy
In this book, Dobbs, Manyika, and Woetzel believe the world is almost constantly discontinued.
Many long held assumptions, long term projections, and long stand trends have been upended by
disruptive technologies, trends, and developments. A completely different world is being formed
by four main forces. The first force is the development of emerging marketsand the growing
urbanization within these markets (Cooper, 2015). The world economic power is moving to east
and south. As an example, China is predicted to have most large companies located in rather than
the United States or Europe by 2025. Equally important, economic activities are arising within these
emerging markets. For instance, a Chinese city Tianjin, who had a same size GDP... Show more

The final power is the tighter global connection in capital, people, and information. The
connection between the countries has already become an intricate web from a series of lines
simply connecting core trading pivots of developed economies. The capital flows between
emerging markets; the trades between developing areas and the people crossed borders have all
experienced a sharp increase.
Figure 1: Global connection has become a complex web (Neal, 2013).
In the end, the authors give an optimistic summary forecasting that the world will become richer,
healthier and more developed. The urbanization will be higher; the technology will also achieve a
higher level. There will be more innovations for challenges, more products and services for new
consumers and more opportunities for entrepreneurs. In their words, today is an age of recurring
miracles .

Good By Muse
The first song I am deconstructing is the original Feeling Good by Nina Simone. This song was
recorded in 1965 when jazz, swing and soul music was very popular amongst American and
African American artists. The song is classified as rock influenced by the styles of jazz, swing and
soul. At the very beginning of the song, the low alto female voice is heard with no accompanying
instruments. The singing style includes the use of melismas and vibrato. When the song reaches
the chorus, brass instruments playing a low pitched riff are introduced with the pianoplaying high
pitched notes. This is continued throughout the second verse. At the second chorus s, strings are
added to the piano part. In the bridge, the singer is improvising over the chords... Show more

This song was recorded in 2001, 36 years after the original was released. Muse is known as an
alternative band, but this song s styles include heavy rock and progressive rock. At the start of the
song, the singer is singing softly, with the overall texture of the song being quite thin. The voice is
accompanied by a soft electronic sound and a soft guitar playing the riff. At around the chorus, the
guitars begin to play loudly and the singing style becomes more aggressive. Drums are introduced
thickening the texture of the song. These drums, along with the distorted guitars, loud singing style
and the thick texture are the heavy rock influences found in the song. These heavy rock influences
are found throughout the song. After the chorus, in the second verse, the singing style is changed
to an almost electronic voice. The frequent changes of mood, dynamics, styles and tempo and the
use of recording techniques are some of the progressive rock influences found in the song. These
occur in the second verse of the song. The guitars back off and the texture thins with just the piano
and drums playing softly. When the song comes to the second chorus, it returns to the same timbre
and dynamics as the first chorus. At the bridge, improvisation by the lead singer is heard with just
the bass guitar playing the riff. This decrescendos until there is nothing heard and the song ends.

Characteristics Oedipus A King
Myles Derr
Topic 3 Some characteristics Oedipus shows while he is a king is his impatience, his ability to act
rashly, and how quick he likes to take action. One example of this is on page 18 of The Oedipus
Cycle when he says, What a wicked old man you are! You d try a stone s patience! Out with it!
Oedipus says this after Teiresias refuses to tell him what he knows about the murderer of the
previous king of Thebes. Instead of trying to persuade him further or just accept that Teiresias
won t tell Oedipus what he wants to know, his impatience causes him to act rashly and start
insulting the seer. Another example of Oedipus s tendency to act quickly appears on page 28
when Oedipus says to Creon, You murderer! Do you think I do not know that you plotted to kill
me, plotted to steal my throne? Prior to their conversation, Oedipus asks his brother in law,
Creon, to bring Teiresias to him so they may ask him what he knows. After Teiresias refuses to
share what he knows with Oedipus, he eventually tells him that Oedipus is the murderer that he
is seeking. Just from this, Oedipus quickly comes to the conclusion that Creon urged Teiresias to
say this in order to usurp the throne. Another example of Oedipus s rashness appears on page 43
of The Oedipus Cycle, The groom leading the horses forced me off the road at his lord s
command; but as this charioteer lurched over towards me I struck him in my rage . . . Swinging

Piers Plowman s whole plot revolves around truth. Piers Plowman is full of many references to
truth. It is defined as all that is morally excellent in the world. Throughout the text, Truth is given

is very important in itself because if you live a truthful life you will go to heaven. So, if you look

fortune in Gods eyes. The lady of lovely looks mentions truth in the first passus:

Challenger exploded just moments after liftoff on national television. Approximately 74 seconds
into its flight, the shuttle erupted into flame and was totally enveloped in the explosive burn
before breaking apart, killing all seven astronauts aboard. The Rogers Commission, appointed by
President Ronald Reagan to investigate the disaster, later concluded that the accident occurred
due to the failure of an O ring seal in the right solid rocket booster of the shuttle.1 Saddened by

The Genocide Of The Rwanda Essay
In 1994, Rwanda was a situation of hatred and revenge tailored by European influence that mixed
together to form the recipe for Genocide. Classical control of third world nations and exploitation
by the west is nothing new. In Africa, the direction of the government is often manipulated by
countries that have had historical control over them. The Genocide of Rwandawas a transfer of
position that placed the Hutupeople in a seat of power over the former rulers, which were the
Tutsis elite. This shift in power led to the division of a nation, evolving propaganda, and a
psychological approach used to create a genocide.
In the early history of Rwanda, there lie differences in people, but peace among the populace was
always upheld in the eyes of the Tutsis. In the opinion of the Hutu, they recall being subjugated
beneath the mwami , the Tutsis elite. In the precolonial times, the Hutu and Tutsis were called a
collective name, the Banyarwanda, which was the term for people of Rwanda. Germany gained
control of the region in 1885 and governed their region through the mwami . An English man
named John Hanning Speke gave a hardline separation of the two people that would be echoed by
the Belgians and the Hutus later into the 20th century. The term Hamitic hypothesis stated that the
origins of the Hutu and Tutsis were that of a leader and servant. It claimed that the origin of Tutsis
had descended from the Biblical King David out of Ethiopia and they were a superior race

Drafted and amended by predominantly white men, the government of the United States employs
laws and regulations that extensively inhibit the goings about of its black residents, with racial
segregation present in housing, loan approval, and the court system producing all white juries in
trials for people of color. The Federal Housing Administration, an agency of the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, has subliminally and disproportionally channeled the wealth,
power, and status of the United States, heavily favoring its white residents, with Ohio State

A Summary Of The Apocalypse Of Adolescence
Introduction
Adolescence is popularly known to be a very tumultuous stage in a person s life. In the adolescent
stage (also coined the identity vs. role confusion stage by theorist Erik Erikson) bodies are changing
rapidly, emotions are unfamiliar and unexplainable, and refraining from succumbing to peer
pressure is more challenging than ever.
Erikson theorizes that in such a period, adolescents have certain tasks, one of which is identifying
who they are. An individual successfully completes the task by staying true to his or her self,
whereas when a person fails that stage, it leads to role confusion; consequently creating a weak
sense of self. (Block 2011). The stage also entails a variety of personal challenges and limitations
faced as well as a series of needs to be met, including: attention, guidance, independence, stability,
and acceptance, among other needs. Meeting an adolescent s needs is fundamental to their healthy
development and personal growth. Nevertheless, adolescence remains as puzzling of a period in
time for both the teens experiencing it, as well as for the individuals surrounding them, watching
them as they navigate through the trials that adolescence brings them.
Analyzing the Apocalypse of Adolescence

murders that ocurred in the state of Vermont, at the hands of troubled young teens. He explores the

of my most favorite movies. It is taken place over a course of ten to eleven years (2002 2013). It is
about a boynamed Mason Evans Jr. who lives with his older sister Samantha Evans, and his
single mother Olivia Evans. Mason s father, Mason Evans Sr. had great impact to Mason Jr.
throughout his childhood. What s spectacular about this movie is that the same actors and
actresses were used all throughout the time span. Mason grew up how many ordinary boys do
with divorced parents. His mother would get into relationships with other men, but never choose
to go back with Mason s father. The family moves to Houston and his father would sometimes
come visit and take him and his sister out to places. It would be easier for Mason if his father
and mother got back together which unfortunately doesn t happen. You could say that Mason
struggles with life as he grows up. He goes through family problems, financial problems, peer
pressure, relationship problems, breakups, etc. Now, many teenage boys experience at least one of
these problems. That s just life. Mason doesn t have to go through too much financial problems,

Commodification Of College Sports Essay
Colleges in the United States previously focused solely on education, while emphasizing their
character and minds. They focused on the student as an athlete making that their main focus and
concern. Together, the idea of athletics and academics complemented each other. While the focus
remained on the student, the individual was able to learn valuable skills that would assist them in
the real world. Since then, the focus of collegeeducation has changed to concentrating on the idea
of entertainment. A well rounded student athlete is no longer expected since they are sacrificed for
the sake of the audience s enjoyment. Today, athletic programs exist as entities, pretending to act in
the best interest of the institution. Carson and Rinehart argue that the disappearance of the college
student athlete has occurred for numerous reasons. Primarily, colleges began to encompass the idea
of athletics and their benefits directly towards the institution. This means that the focus is now
aimed towards the financial enterprise of athletics directly through ticket sales, broadcasting,
merchandising and much more. College... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
College athletics no longer serve as an extracurricular activity got students, but rather as a product.
In addition to this, the commodification of college sports has also led to the exploitation of student
athletes. Since academic ideals have fallen, the exploitation of African American athletes have
reinforced this. They now dominate on college teams, but treating someone different to benefit
from their work is shocking. Due to the desperate need for success in athletics, colleges have put
their moral compasses aside to recruit African American athletes who will benefit the team,
regardless of the cost. They receive privileged treatment in the recruitment process, which has

Metaphor And Motif In Maya Angelou s Caged Bird

Seldom not often; rarely In Caged Bird Maya Angelou uses the image of a caged bird and a free
bird to represent how race divides a society and how people react to how society is divided.
Angelou explains just how strong the divide in society is and how both sides feel. Angelou starts
the poem by describing the free bird, which is meant to represent white people in society. A free
bird... dares to claim the sky is a metaphor for a white person in society who can do whatever they
want, be whoever they want, and is able to rise up in society to become successful (1,7). The free

On the other hand, the caged bird whose wings are clipped and his feet are tied represents the
people in society who have had everything taken away from them because of prejudice (12 13). The
caged bird is a metaphor for the black people in society. They have almost no rights, they are
mistreated, and they are very limited with the impact they can have on society because of the
color of their skin. The only thing available to the people with a disadvantage is their ability to
hope for something better. Angelou writes the caged bird sings of freedom (21 22). Although
the bird is stuck where he is, in a cage, hope is the only thing he has and hope is what keeps him
alive. Without hope, people have nothing. In contrast to the caged bird/black people, the free bird
/white people have a different outlook on the barrier that divides the society. The free bird names
the sky as his own and takes possession of it (26). Taking possession of the sky, which is a
metaphor for the leading/successful roles in society, is an act of

Transgenderism Is a Mental Illness; They Should Be With Bromden and Harding Mental illnesses
were diagnosed much more frequently during the middle of the twentieth century than they are

The Influence Of The Heian Period Of Japan
What is worth learning in a boring history class? Things such as The World Wars and The French
Revolution might be interesting, but the excitement of a history class comes from the Classics . A
Classic , as in a classical civilization. They draw the curiosity and interests of students because of
their unique marks in history, but what categories does one civilization have to satisfy in order to
be a Classic ? It has to be original, influential, and timeless! The Roman Empire and the Greeks
are the widely known classical civilizations, however, the Heian Period of Japan, that satisfy all
the categories to be a classic, is not considered as one! Since, the Heian Period is original,
influential, and timeless, it is a classical civilization.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As in, something made them unique and different from all the previous civilizations. The unique
factor of the Heian Period is that women were given more rights, which led them to be culturally
dominate and actively involved in the culture of the civilization. According to the book The Tale
of Genji , written by a female novelist of the Heian imperial court, women of the Heian Period
were provided with the basic education such as, art, poetry, music, and writing. There were also
laws that protected women from abuse of male partners.(Shikibu, 2014) Furthermore, women were
allowed to divorce and remarry which was not even available in many European countries.(Lurie,
2004) All of the following droits were much more than what the previous Japanese civilizations
offered for women. During this period, women were still limited to outside or political activities,
thus, allowing more time to create literature. Consequently, many novels, poems, and literature
from the Heian Period are from female authors. Notably, the Heian Period was also the peak of
Japanese literature. Giving women more rights significantly changed the behaviour of Heian women

My Trip to London and the OXO Tower
I was recently reminiscing whilst I had a few minutes for my mind to wander around dreaming
up thoughts and memories. I came across a mementos day I recalled from not so long ago. Just
as I was to finish my thought, the telephone rang like a baby shrieking in its cradle. As my sisters
voice came blaring through the receiver, she was clearly in no mood for recalling past fun. Her
questions came all at once about washing powder. Something clearly a student studying medicine
couldn t make sense of. After she d abruptly finished her conversation I was back to thinking of the
sights and smells of London city.
The particular event I was recollecting was that of the past summer. The OXOtower South bank

was, the Cresta Restaurant, on holiday in Swanage in 1961 . When they arrived our eyes lit up
with excitement and the reflection of the sparkler arising form the ice cream could be seen in
our glistening eye s. There was a large mass of ice cream. In between, the cream had to jostle for
space as the sparkles of glitter, added that glistening touch like snow gleaming in the sun. The
pudding placed before me at the OXO Tower was a little less expressive with lemonzest for a
garnishing and three perfectly shaped spheres of lemon sorbet with a base of crumbled digestives.
The lemons so yellow and the bowl as white as a sheet of paper reminded me of a perfect daisy
shining forth from the bland backdrop. The perfect taste and outstanding presentation just reassured
me of the chefs excellent artistic style, and culinary skills. The fabulous food brought back
memories of visiting Ray MtBlancs restaurant when the food was similar in presentation, yet
completely different in taste but no less incredible.

Anne Style Of Anne Francis Robbins
Anne Francis Robbins was born in New York City on July 6th, 1921. Anne s early life seemed
like it would not lead to be anything nearly as successful as it did. Early on in her life Anne
would acquire the name Nancy. When Nancy was born her father left her and her mother. Nancy s
mother Edith, who was a young actress, sent Nancy to go live with her aunt and uncle in Maryland.
Here she attended a community school titled Sidwell Friends School. Nancy would regularly travel
with her aunt to see her mother in New York City.
Nancy s mother would go on to marry a very prominent neurosurgeon from Chicago. Nancy would
then move back in with her mother and her new stepfather who adopted her. Nancy now went from
poor/middle class to very wealthy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After being in three films and a couple guest spots, Nancy decided quit acting and focus on raising
their family. They then had another kid, counting Ronald s two other kids, made four in total.
In 1967, Ronald was elected as the governor of California. Nancy immediately took the role as
her beloved state. She was quickly criticized after speaking out about governor s mansion calling
it a fire trap before moving her family to a Sacramento suburb. The press and Ronald s political
opponents recognized her as snobbish, though she had only moved for the safety of her family. Her
reputation soon healed itself after becoming involved in the foster grandparents program. She was
than known as a model first lady.
In 1980 Ronald was elected president of the United States, after a failed campaign in 1976. In 1982
she championed a drug abuse awareness and education program. She spread the awareness by
traveling throughout the U.S. and other foreign countries. In 1985 the Just Say No campaign took
off, but was criticized by some as simplistic. Though the criticism was still in affect, the National
Crusade for a Drug Free America act was finalized by President Reagan in 1986.
The president s personal protector was said to be Nancy s most important role as the first lady.
When there was an assassination attempt on President Reagan, Nancy took it as her concern to

Comparing Hinduism And Islam
Many people tend to confuse Muslims from Hindus and vice versa. After visiting each place of
worship and examining each person individually, and listening to each person speak so highly
about their religion and culture, you can clearly distinguish between the two. They have many
similarities and differences, which establish a relationship between the two. Although in the past
there has been many disputes over the two, this is due to their dissimilarities. The most common
dispute between the two are because of the gods. Hinduism, think that gods are present in

The Islamic religions follows five pillars from the prophet. 1. Testament that there is one God and
Muhammad is his messenger; 2. prayer five times daily mainly before sunset and after; 3. fast
during Ramadan you can eat after sunset; 4. charity to the poor at least 2.5% of their overall
wealth; 5. Pilgrimage journey to the holy place in India, the Mosque.
The goal of Hinduism is to break the cycle of rebirth, in attempt to attain salvation. On the other
hand, the goal of the Islamic religion is to fulfill their responsibility of life by following the
Quran and Hadith, and to live life with compassion towards all of Gods creations. When it comes
to the place of worship, both religions differ in regards to statues and pictures. Shiva Vishnu
contained many statues of their gods and it is a common practice to have these images. Although,
ISOM does not contain any drawings, paintings, or statues regarding their gods. God cannot be
seen, but sees all. They only have calligraphy and the temple is angled in such a way that it faces
Mecca.
Islam comes from the Arabic root word of Salema which translates to peace, submission, and
obedience. Islam is submission to the will of God and obedience to His rules. The Muslims follow
the Qur an, and traditions of the Holy Last messenger Muhammad, called Sunnah which is found in
prayers or hadiths by the men around him. Hindus follow the Vedas and Gita, Smrti and Sruti are

Renewable Energy In America
Fuel price seems to be the subject that always makes headlines on a regular basis. The United
States is the biggest consumer of energy in the world. Lucas Davis, a Berkeley Professor
conducted a study in 2013 on global oil consumption and found that the average American
consumes more than 300 gallons of gasolineannually. The amount is at least 200 gallons more than
other developed countries such as Germany, and France. (Davis, 2013) The high consumption
forces Americans to rely on foreign fuel sources since domestic energy is simply not enough to
satisfy the thirst. Rising fuel price coupled with fuel shortage scare are often a common concern for
every American, thus there needs to be an invention to stretch the supply in case of disaster.... Show

Ethanol did not become such a staple addition to gasoline until the 1970s due to fuel shortage
scare. Its use became even more prevalent in the early 2000s with the increase in global warming
awareness. The Renewable Fuels Association reports that the United States alone produced over
15 billion gallons of ethanol, a 14 billion gallons increase from its production in 1999 (Industry
Statistics, 2017). While ethanol is a clean energy when use, however, its production is not quite as
clean clean as it appears to be. Ethanol is considered renewable since the heartland of the United
States grows so much corn annually to supply the plant. The corn growing process is quite
damaging to the environment. Farming equipment runs on diesel fuel, which directly contributes to
the greenhouse gas production. The use of fertilizer and insect repellent chemical is harmful to soil
and atmosphere. The transportation of crops relies heavily on semi tractors that still heavily rely on
fossil fuel, thus exacerbate the problem. Not to mention that ethanol plants require electricity
primarily generated by coal fired power plants since it is much more efficient and a lot cheaper. All
these factors contribute to the global warming problem, the very problem that ethanol is supposed to

a strong, united, and accepting country. With his famous quote, The cost of liberty is less than the

Problems With The Doctrine Of Double Effect
Jessie Buckler Term Paper Philosophy 3300 April 25, 2016 PROBLEMS WITH THE
DOCTRINE OF DOUBLE EFFECT Defenders of the Doctrine of Double Effect argue that there
is a morally significant distinction, which bears on the rightness of actions, between those
consequences of our actions that are intended and those that are foreseen. Utilitarians often use
this doctrine to describe their stance on the topic of harming others. This paper will look at
three situations that are commonly used to defend this idea, and discuss the possible
inconsistencies found in this doctrine when it comes to the act of euthanasia. When discussing
the topic of doing harm and killing innocent people, some like to draw a distinction not against
doing and allowing harm, but against intending and foreseeing harm. It is important for us to
discuss the difference between the two in order to fully understand the potential problems that
defenders of this argument claim. FORESEEN AND INTENDED HARM The main distinction
of whether an act of harm was intended or foreseen relies merely on whether the intending harm
was done as a means to an end and not just done as an end. This idea doesn t just account for
actions that were done, but also ones that were allowed. When harm is done as an end it is
merely a foreseen side effect of an intended action. When harm is foreseen it is often overlooked
by defenders of the doctrine of double effect and seems to be more morally permissible than those
actions that are

  • 2. Essay Comparing Dulce Et Decorum Est And Futility Wilfred Owen combines realism with a romantic lyric poignancy and a visionary mode that enables him to lead us to a true understanding of the personal costs of war. His veracity and close proximity to World War one confronts us as well as shows compassion for the young men that fought. Both his poems Dulce et Decorum estand Futility explore the psychological, physical and the futile costs that war brought upon us. Owen s poetic skills, vivid language and sensory imagery express his bitter animosity of those who encourage war in Dulce et Decorum and the pointlessness of war and perhaps life itself in the poem Futility. Psychological Owen writes with an eloquent style and his use of poetic techniques accentuate the brutal destruction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Futility starts with Move him into the sun . The verb move is an inexact word however, we feel the movement has to be gentle in contrast to Dulce et Decorum est where the body was flung into the Wagon. Straight away we are able to see the contrast of how Owen presents physical death in both poems. Both poems abundantly use imagery in slightly differently ways; Dulce et Decorum est the imagery is vividly graphic and grotesque done deliberately to make us feel uncomfortable. The first stanza begins with soldiers trudging through the ubiquitous sludge and the dual adjective knock kneed shows physical exhaustion and fatigue of the young men that instantly reverses this idea of them being noble and healthy fighting. Followed by the visceral imagery the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs . This effectively recreates the scene Owen witnessed to involve the audience by encouraging them to hear at every jolt the physical horror the soldiers suffered and invoke their pity. Owen uses imagery more subtle in Futility. He creates this repetitive image of the sun as having revitalising ability to bring back the dead and present the realness of physical death on ... • 3. The Significance of Lily Bart s Death (House of Mirth) Assignment one Discuss the significance of Lily Bart s death at the end of The House of Mirth. You should consider the implications both for the protagonist s social milieu and for women in general at this point in American history. The significance of Lily Bart s death. As a writer looking towards the twentieth century Wharton faced the challenge of telling the history of women past the age of thirty. The age of thirty was established as the threshold by nineteenth century conventions. The conventions of girlhood and marriage ability; a psychological observation about the formation of the female identity. Wharton shared Freud s pessimism about the difficulties of change for women. In his essay femininity ,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She cannot fully possess herself could this be the meaning behind the word that is left unsaid? Could the word she wanted to tell Selden be freedom ? Earlier in the novel when walking with Selden in the park, Lily listens as he defines what success means for him, My idea of success,...is personal freedom...from everything from money, from poverty...from all the material accidents (p.60). It appears that both Lily and Selden were too late in realising that it was in fact this freedom they both desired. The withholding of the word ultimately denies the reader access to Lily s dying thoughts. However, it is this switch from omniscient narration to free indirect discourse that allows the reader to fill this textual space . Wharton manages to position the novel as psychological realism bordering on modernism. 7 Lily is repeatedly defeated. The aunt who should be there to rescue her disinherits her; her friend Bertha Dorset should be there for her, yet she throws her out in order to protect her own reputation; the man who should have faith in her, cannot trust her long enough to overcome his own emotional meticulousness. We see Lily being taken from the heights to her death in an unrelenting fall.8 Lily realises that her status as a lady does not exempt her from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay Passion of the Christ The Passion of the Christ is one of many films about the life of Jesus but this particular one is different to the others. Released in 2004, directed by Mel Gibson and filmed in the ancient Aramaic language, `The Passion focuses mainly on the death of Christ and shows us the full extent as to what he suffered to save mankind. Before seeing The Passion of the Christ I hadn t heard much about it except that it was very violent and politically incorrect. In fact I hadn t seen or heard a review that said if it was good or bad or if it was well acted or if it was worth the watch. Everyone just seemed to be interested in saying that it is too violent, the movie should not have been made and Mel Gibson shouldn t be making money from a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is definitely something in this film for everyone. Even if you can t bear to watch the violence, which is so predominant throughout the movie, there is a lot of emotion, action and even horror that will keep any audience gripped. In this film Gibson uses the devil in the form of a person and he shows us how man is tempted by evil which results in jumps and frights better than most horror films out these days. As far as the violence is concerned, The Passion was very gruesome and disturbing to watch at some points. Some people think it is too much to see someone getting their skin ripped off with metal claws but I think it was a necessary part of the ordeal to which Christ was subjected and it brings home the enormity of what happened. Other films made his crucifixion out to be a graceful and peaceful death almost leaving out the fact that he was nearly flogged to death before even touching his cross. This is not the type of film where you can complain about the story line or say you didn t like the ending, but you do come with an expectation of how you would like them to portray the story. For me I was more than satisfied with how they did it but some more religious people might not like the way little things were changed from the Bible. In The Passion when Judas Iscariot hung himself he didn t say he was sorry to god but we could see that he regretted doing what he did and we knew he was sorry. Gibson also ... • 6. Comparing Intersex And Transgender Females Deserve A Place... Intersex and transgender females deserve a place of belonging in the world of sport. Society s need to categorize humans makes it difficult for minorities to find a sense of belonging. Humans are easily given labels by society as gay, straight, black, asian, female, male etc. This system works for the majority of people, and those who fit in do not see a necessity to change these constructs. As Judith Butler argues in her essay Undoing Genderwe must remake the definition of human by deconstructing our preconceived notion of humanity and continuously reassembling it. Butler eloquently states This means we must learn to live and to embrace the destruction and re articulation of the human in the name of a more capacious and, finally, less... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Physicist Ira Hammerman discovered that in a set of swimming and running races woman s world records were consistently about 90 percent of the men s world record. Further research proved this ratio true across diverse sports (Meyer). Many believe that a male to female transgender holds an unfair competitive advantage against a cisgender female because they were born as males and therefore retain some of the advantages that come with masculinity. These advantages go beyond the biological differences in gender which can be equated with hormonal treatment. In her essay Essentialism and Experience Bell Hooks discusses the effect of male privilege. She argues that male students, who have spent most of their lives benefitting from male privilege, do not fully understand the passion of experience in a classroom. Similarly we can explore the benefits of male privilege in sport which is a drastically male dominant aspect of society. A study at the University of Southern California uncovered that L.A. based broadcast affiliates devote only 3.2 percent of airtime to women s sport (Good). Iris Young builds on this societal imbalance in her essay Throwing Like a Girl. Young explains how societal structures have a psychological effect on female performance. She argues that the fact that women cannot throw as far as men is not simply due to the biomechanical differences between genders but rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Framers Of The U.s. Constitution Essay Introduction The majority of people, if not all, by human nature are greedy and work toward their own desires and betterment. This natural instinct to protect one s self interest actually is a positive force in the world. People will naturally work toward improving their station in life and the innovative ideas that are unleashed and actions that are taken in these pursuits improve other people s lives as well. The issue begins when this greed grows unchecked and becomes a desire to have power over others. History has long shown that people who have power, especially power protected by a governing body, should be held accountable. A community of people should never assume that those they have elected to govern them possess greed that is more virtuous than individual greed. The Framers of the U.S. Constitution recognized this abuse of power and were intent to put in place a system that included separation of powers and checks and balances to protect American citizens from tyranny. Although the Constitution does not specifically address term limits on public servants in government leadership, there is evidence that some of the Framers understood that the negative effects of power hungry public officials. Ikea stands for; Ingvar Kamprad elmtaryd Agunnaryd, the son s first and last name and the farm and village where he grew up. The first Ikea sold small items such as pencils, table runners and nylon stockings, all for exceptionally affordable prices. Ingvar knew he had found a system that worked, by 1945 he had expanded. Ingvar started advertising in local newspapers and began a do it yourself mail order service, where goods were transported by the local milk van to the train stations. Another of Ikea s core competencies is their ability to create a positive atmosphere and create enthusiasm within each store through effective design. Since the store is designed in a circle, the concept for the store layout allows one to see all the merchandise in the entire store by simply moving one direction. The aisles are wide to allow for merchandise inspection and constant flow of traffic, merchandise is fully assembled and displayed for viewing and product testing. Ikea also houses a restaurant, kids playroom, and staged room displays to allow for better visualization and overall atmosphere. Ikea s work structure for employees also helps set the atmosphere and showcase employee dedication and enthusiasm. On a regular basis Ikea hosts Anti bureaucracy Week, during which executives work on the shop floor and tend to the registers. Customizing local markets to reflect individual cultures is another of Ikea s core competencies that have allowed them to be able to hold on to a large market of global lower middle to middle class consumers, something that even Wal mart has yet to accomplish. And with just 5 10% of the furniture market accounted for in each country Ikea operates in, there is plenty of room for growth. • 11. The Dividing Lien of Plato s Allegory of the Cave Essay Plato s allegory of the cave, located in Book VII of The Republic is one of the most famous allegories in which he has created. This simile touches base on a number of philosophical ideas which Plato developed over the progression of The Republic (Plato, G.M.A Grube, 1993), the most noticeable being the dividing line. The dividing line is the point between the world of ideas where we live and the world of the forms which is in the heavens. This allegory of the cave helps people understand the theory on which philosophyis based. It is also in this Book where the education of the guardians is outlined. When the prisoner turns his head towards the light of the fire his eyes hurt him and he is confused because he is unable to see the objects of the shadows he had been subjected to his entire life. It is because of this pain and confusion that the prisoner wishes to return to the life that he is accustomed to, and the reality he knows, the world of the shadows. We are asked to envision the stubbornness displayed by this prisoner to leave the world of the shadows, a stubbornness which causes him to be dragged into the sunlight. Upon seeing the light of the sun the prisoner is temporarily blinded, unable to see anything around him, blinding him more than when he was a prisoner of the cave. Eventually the prisoner s vision adjusts and he is able to see more clearly. His mind will first be able to recognize the shadows, then moving on to reflections of objects in the water, and lastly the objects themselves. This new sight leads the prisoner to question the colours and objects around him. He questions what it is that causes him to being able to see all the things he can, compared to only seeing poor reflections of objects in the cave. The prisoner eventually concludes that it is the sun which illuminates all around him and is the source of his sight. Throughout this experiment we have learned a great deal more about electricity and how it is created. Before this was performed research was done on our materials and their functions, hoping to be more educated on how they would help us solve our problem. We were able to make a well educated hypothesis from our newly found information. Our prediction was that the lime would have the most voltage because in our research we found that it has the most citric acid in it. Citric acid is modeling the chemical energy in a battery causing the most voltage. The independent variable applied was the type of fruit tested while the dependent variable was the voltage measured in the multimeter. Some of the controls kept consistent were the types of nails, the type of multimeter, the DCV setting on the multimeter, the nail placement, and the wire placement. Our hopes for the outcome of this experiment is to have successfully created three fruit batteries and for us to compare their voltages. Materials and Methods For the experiment gather a lime, an orange, an apple, a zinc nail and a copper nail to model the essential parts of a battery. The zinc nail represents the negative charge while the copper nail imitates a positive charge. To measure this energy created in the fruit an analog multimeter was used. The procedure used is below. I didn t know I was any different because that s all I knew. If I saw double vision or didn t see color, I thought that was what everyone else saw. In life, we take so much for granted. One year for Halloween I was so excited to dress up as a pirate. I wore an eye patch on my left eye and believed I was in another land. • 14. Fascism And Nazism Similarities Fascism and Nazism. Both once prominent forms of government during the 20th century, and now the number of countries that use either one of these governments is diminishing. Fascism and Nazism both emerged because of a general crisis of the European political system during the late 19th century to the end of World War 1. Fascism was motivated by the fears of of social as well as political disintegration, and of political revolution on the part of both ruling of the lower and middle classes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). Europe would later see many Nazi and Fascists movements during the time period between World War 1 and World War 2; however, in only Italy and Germany did these forms of government manage to come to power and develop into their respective regimes (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). While these two once prominent governments share some similarities, they also share many differences. Fascism first exploded onto the political scene during the 1919 as the first mass movement of of the middle class citizens in both Italy as well as Germany. In this political party, important sections of the economic and political establishments sought out to attempt to preserve the status quo in the revolutionary times (Encylopedia.com Editors, 2017). This form of government appealed to many lower and middle class citizens because it made it seem that they were at control of the political party. The biggest and most fundamental problem which can be seen globally is, world hunger. The sad reality is that this is an issue and one that not many are talking about. In his article Frederic Seebohm proclaims that the world bankestimates that there are now one billion absolute poor in the world (Seebohm 5). He continues to define absolute poor as those whose condition of life is so degraded by disease, illiteracy, malnutritionand squalor as to deny its victims basic human necessities (4). The fact that there are so many hungry people in the world today is mind boggling when you think about it. We are well into the 21st century. We now have the ability to communicate instantaneously with people all over the world. The collected knowledge of humanity, is literally at our fingertips via smartphones in our hands. Now some may assume that world hunger is still a grave issue simply because there is not enough food to feed everyone. However recently scientists who have studied world hunger, have found that the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet. The main cause of worldwide hunger is poverty. As R. C. Pickett mentions the the world has at present 1.5 billion hectares of arable land that remains uncultivated (31). The problem isn t that there isn t enough land, the issue remains with the coordination of food production. Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to buy food. They also lack the monetary resources to grow their own food, such as the means to harvest, process, and store food. The interaction of domestic animals within the cropping systems needs to be intensively revaluated. A solution that Pickett suggests includes governments and businesses interacting to provide a favorable price and availability structure of the necessary inputs for adequate production, and to supply needed economical processing, storage, transport, and utilization systems (32). His solution is to aim more government intervention as he believes that much more food could be produced at least in certain areas but is not, simply because there is no ... One example of this is on page 18 of The Oedipus Cycle when he says, What a wicked old man you are! You d try a stone s patience! Out with it! Oedipus says this after Teiresias refuses to tell him what he knows about the murderer of the previous king of Thebes. Instead of trying to persuade him further or just accept that Teiresias won t tell Oedipus what he wants to know, his impatience causes him to act rashly and start insulting the seer. Another example of Oedipus s tendency to act quickly appears on page 28 when Oedipus says to Creon, You murderer! Do you think I do not know that you plotted to kill me, plotted to steal my throne? Prior to their conversation, Oedipus asks his brother in law, Creon, to bring Teiresias to him so they may ask him what he knows. After Teiresias refuses to share what he knows with Oedipus, he eventually tells him that Oedipus is the murderer that he is seeking. Just from this, Oedipus quickly comes to the conclusion that Creon urged Teiresias to say this in order to usurp the throne. Classical control of third world nations and exploitation by the west is nothing new. In Africa, the direction of the government is often manipulated by countries that have had historical control over them. The Genocide of Rwandawas a transfer of position that placed the Hutupeople in a seat of power over the former rulers, which were the Tutsis elite. This shift in power led to the division of a nation, evolving propaganda, and a psychological approach used to create a genocide. In the early history of Rwanda, there lie differences in people, but peace among the populace was always upheld in the eyes of the Tutsis. In the opinion of the Hutu, they recall being subjugated beneath the mwami , the Tutsis elite. In the precolonial times, the Hutu and Tutsis were called a collective name, the Banyarwanda, which was the term for people of Rwanda. Germany gained control of the region in 1885 and governed their region through the mwami . An English man named John Hanning Speke gave a hardline separation of the two people that would be echoed by the Belgians and the Hutus later into the 20th century. In the adolescent stage (also coined the identity vs. role confusion stage by theorist Erik Erikson) bodies are changing rapidly, emotions are unfamiliar and unexplainable, and refraining from succumbing to peer pressure is more challenging than ever. Erikson theorizes that in such a period, adolescents have certain tasks, one of which is identifying who they are. An individual successfully completes the task by staying true to his or her self, whereas when a person fails that stage, it leads to role confusion; consequently creating a weak sense of self. (Block 2011). The stage also entails a variety of personal challenges and limitations faced as well as a series of needs to be met, including: attention, guidance, independence, stability, and acceptance, among other needs. Meeting an adolescent s needs is fundamental to their healthy development and personal growth. Nevertheless, adolescence remains as puzzling of a period in time for both the teens experiencing it, as well as for the individuals surrounding them, watching them as they navigate through the trials that adolescence brings them. Boyhood, to this date is still one of my most favorite movies. It is taken place over a course of ten to eleven years (2002 2013). It is about a boynamed Mason Evans Jr. who lives with his older sister Samantha Evans, and his single mother Olivia Evans. Mason s father, Mason Evans Sr. had great impact to Mason Jr. throughout his childhood. What s spectacular about this movie is that the same actors and actresses were used all throughout the time span. Mason grew up how many ordinary boys do with divorced parents. His mother would get into relationships with other men, but never choose to go back with Mason s father. The family moves to Houston and his father would sometimes come visit and take him and his sister out to places. It would be easier for Mason if his father and mother got back together which unfortunately doesn t happen. You could say that Mason struggles with life as he grows up. He goes through family problems, financial problems, peer pressure, relationship problems, breakups, etc. Now, many teenage boys experience at least one of these problems. That s just life. They have many similarities and differences, which establish a relationship between the two. Although in the past there has been many disputes over the two, this is due to their dissimilarities. The most common dispute between the two are because of the gods. Hinduism, think that gods are present in everything and anything while Islambelieves in the holiness of Allah alone. Testament that there is one God and Muhammad is his messenger; 2. prayer five times daily mainly before sunset and after; 3. fast during Ramadan you can eat after sunset; 4. charity to the poor at least 2.5% of their overall wealth; 5. Pilgrimage journey to the holy place in India, the Mosque. The goal of Hinduism is to break the cycle of rebirth, in attempt to attain salvation. On the other hand, the goal of the Islamic religion is to fulfill their responsibility of life by following the Quran and Hadith, and to live life with compassion towards all of Gods creations. When it comes to the place of worship, both religions differ in regards to statues and pictures. Shiva Vishnu contained many statues of their gods and it is a common practice to have these images. Although, ISOM does not contain any drawings, paintings, or statues regarding their gods. God cannot be seen, but sees all. They only have calligraphy and the temple is angled in such a way that it faces Mecca. Islam comes from the Arabic root word of Salema which translates to peace, submission, and obedience. • 53. Renewable Energy In America Fuel price seems to be the subject that always makes headlines on a regular basis. The United States is the biggest consumer of energy in the world. Lucas Davis, a Berkeley Professor conducted a study in 2013 on global oil consumption and found that the average American consumes more than 300 gallons of gasolineannually. The amount is at least 200 gallons more than other developed countries such as Germany, and France. (Davis, 2013) The high consumption forces Americans to rely on foreign fuel sources since domestic energy is simply not enough to satisfy the thirst. Rising fuel price coupled with fuel shortage scare are often a common concern for every American, thus there needs to be an invention to stretch the supply in case of disaster.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethanol did not become such a staple addition to gasoline until the 1970s due to fuel shortage scare. Its use became even more prevalent in the early 2000s with the increase in global warming awareness. The Renewable Fuels Association reports that the United States alone produced over 15 billion gallons of ethanol, a 14 billion gallons increase from its production in 1999 (Industry Statistics, 2017). While ethanol is a clean energy when use, however, its production is not quite as clean clean as it appears to be. Ethanol is considered renewable since the heartland of the United States grows so much corn annually to supply the plant. The corn growing process is quite damaging to the environment. Farming equipment runs on diesel fuel, which directly contributes to the greenhouse gas production. The use of fertilizer and insect repellent chemical is harmful to soil and atmosphere. The transportation of crops relies heavily on semi tractors that still heavily rely on fossil fuel, thus exacerbate the problem. Not to mention that ethanol plants require electricity primarily generated by coal fired power plants since it is much more efficient and a lot cheaper. All these factors contribute to the global warming problem, the very problem that ethanol is supposed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. The Story Of W. E. B. Dubois People of the Southern States of America, we are facing an epidemic of bigotry and a relentless wave of cruelty toward and undeserving group of people. There seems to be no hope for the African victims of the blatant profiling and hate. However, I believe they can find refuge and peace under the wings of the prominent leader, W.E.B DuBois. His vision of the future America is a strong, united, and accepting country. With his famous quote, The cost of liberty is less than the price of repression. I am pleased to say that the heart of the South should no longer rest in the hands of white supremacists that seek distance and separation of the white and Negro communities. Take Booker T. Washington for example, his quote In all things that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Problems With The Doctrine Of Double Effect Jessie Buckler Term Paper Philosophy 3300 April 25, 2016 PROBLEMS WITH THE DOCTRINE OF DOUBLE EFFECT Defenders of the Doctrine of Double Effect argue that there is a morally significant distinction, which bears on the rightness of actions, between those consequences of our actions that are intended and those that are foreseen. Utilitarians often use this doctrine to describe their stance on the topic of harming others. This paper will look at three situations that are commonly used to defend this idea, and discuss the possible inconsistencies found in this doctrine when it comes to the act of euthanasia. When discussing the topic of doing harm and killing innocent people, some like to draw a distinction not against doing and allowing harm, but against intending and foreseeing harm. It is important for us to discuss the difference between the two in order to fully understand the potential problems that defenders of this argument claim. FORESEEN AND INTENDED HARM The main distinction of whether an act of harm was intended or foreseen relies merely on whether the intending harm was done as a means to an end and not just done as an end. This idea doesn t just account for actions that were done, but also ones that were allowed. When harm is done as an end it is merely a foreseen side effect of an intended action. When harm is foreseen it is often overlooked by defenders of the doctrine of double effect and seems to be more morally permissible than those actions that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
