The Importance Of Life In Life
What are some things most people live life without enjoying? Most of the time, it is the small things in
life. Many people go through life, focusing on a big grand picture, but fail to enjoy the little moments
in life that make them happy for just a second or will amuse them for awhile. In my opinion, if you
live life worrying about what people think about you, or changing your lifestyle to fit in then you are
not really enjoying life.
I know this to be true because when I first moved to Heath, I was trying to fit in with people and made
myself more like them rather than show them who I truly am. I realized quickly that if they didn t like
me for me then they were not the people I should hang out with. When I got into high school, I was
acting more like myself and was enjoying the little things that made me laugh or made others laugh.
That ranged from being able to crack a joke sometimes to even just enjoying the music in the library
and dancing a little to have some fun. I really think that no matter what we do in life there should
always be some time to do things that are just fun and they don t have to be on a big scale of events.
One of the things I do is I compete in different athletic events, and there are times that the guys from
the team will all go do something and I will just take off and go on my own and sit to watch the world
around me, listening as the world carries on. Something I know that I am guilty of is living life in the
fast lane and not realizing

Asian American Stereotypes In Pop Culture
The view of POCs (People of Color) within mainstream media has always been strewed. From the
roles of Flora Robson as a Haitian maid in Saratoga Trunk to Mickey Rooney as I. Y. Yunioshi, the
view of POCs in American popular culture has always been warped to portray an often negative or
demeaning stereotype that appeases the white audience of American pop culture. Although many races
are negatively impacted by the conceptions of the white American public, the portrayal of Asian
American stereotypes in television has especially given an illusion to the American public on what to
assume when facing an Asian American. Even with the growth of the Asian American voice in
television and the increase in representation through new shows such as Fresh Off the Boat and Marco

Anna May Wong s role within this show started her pathway to a road of notable legacy. With this,
there was a foot in the door for Asian American actors and through Wong s film appearances and
prominent magazine features that helped humanize Chinese Americans, especially to the white

despite Wong s roles, which brought attention and peace to Chinese Americans, not all was happy with
Wong s portrayal in films such as Dragon Lady and Butterfly which embodied stereotypes of the
Asian population while Chinese Nationalists did not portrayed such that in mainstream American
media. Following Wong s success in television, it would not be until roughly a decade later when actor
George Takei was casted as Lt. Hikaru Sulu in the second Star Trek pilot. Within his time as an actor,

Why The Coin Doctrine Will Affect The Way Organisations...
Counter insurgency (COIN) operations are employed to combat an insurgency. These types of
operations present a highly complex operating environment within which conventional warfare is
becoming more and more ineffective. COIN operations form are large proportion of modern conflicts
and it is forcing organisations to develop new strategies and tactics in order for them to remain within
the legal bounds of international humanitarian law (IHL). This essay will explore how committing to a
COIN doctrine will affect the way organisations uphold the principles of IHL. It will also explore
whether a COIN doctrine will be effective in completing operations.
An insurgency is defined by the United States government as the organised use of subversion and
violence to seize, nullify or challenge political control of a region . Insurgencies have been present
throughout history as a form of warfare, however combatting an insurgency has always been difficult
even in the modern era. In recent operations in Afghanistan, religious extremism and ethnic
intolerance have given rise to fanatical groups that pose complex challenges which threaten social and
political stability. These group utilise all available means in order to gain an advantage as they
struggle for the acceptance by the people of the state or region of the legitimacy of one side s claim to
power . Results of this include the exploitation of the Laws of Armed Combat (LOAC) and the rules
of engagement (ROE) used by COIN forces.

The Labyrinth Hero s Journey
Labyrinth is an adventure musical fantasy film about a young girl s journey to rescue her baby brother.
Jennifer Connelly plays Sarah Williams, a young girl with an active imagination stuck in the twilight
time of a girl becoming a woman. Trapped at home while her brother, Toby, cries endlessly, Sarah
says, I wish the goblins would take you away right now. To her astonishment, David Bowie s
character, Goblin King Jareth, grants her wish and whisks the babe away to his magical realm. Sarah
immediately regrets what was said but can not take it back. Jareth makes a deal with Sarah. If she
solves the labyrinth in 13 hours, then she may have her brother back. If she fails to reach the goblin

According to Roger Ebert, nightmare movies such as the Labyrinth are not as suspenseful as they
should be. These movies do not follow any rules or logic. Anything can occur, nothing has to happen,
rules continuously change, and nothing is as it seems. He believes we are wasting energy caring:
Consider, for example, the scene in Labyrinth where Sarah thinks she is waking up from her horrible
dream and opens the door of her bedroom. Anything could be outside that door. He also believes the
Muppet idea works better when humans visit the Muppet world as in the Muppet Movies rather than
when Muppets appear the human world. He states another problem with the film is its length. Ebert
argues that without a strong plot to carry us through the movie, movies like this are endanger of
becoming just a series of incidents: There s no structure to the order of the adventures. Sarah does this,
she does that, she s almost killed here, almost trapped there, until at last nothing much

Through the years other stores have come into the picture using the same idea. Companies like
Safeway, Amazon, Whole Foods, Peapod, and others are the new entrants. The bargaining power
FreshDirect have over other companies is that they cater to a small area. (New York area only) The
threat of substitute services has cause FreshDirect to change their thinking in order to keep up with
demands. Companies like Whole Foods with their organic foods have cause FreshDirect to offer more
organic foods. Local grocery stores have options of in store pick up that where people can order the
non perishable food on line, the store will pack the non perishables and the customers can come in the
store and go directly to the fruit and vegetable section and meat sections and pick out their food
without having to explore the entire store. There is not too much competition in the industry in the
New York area, its FreshDirect and the other stores trying to catch up.
STRATEGY USED
The strategies used to stay on top of the composition are what I like to call the ear to the wind method
. This is when a company listens and watches what other companies are doing and try to stay one step
ahead of them. Like in the event that Whole Foods selling the organic foods FreshDirect quickly
started selling organic foods so that they don t lose their customers that wanted that same type
product. FreshDirect was successful in employing this method

Reflective Essay On Outdoor Education
One of the great aspects of Jesse Remington High School is the Outdoor Education program. Whether
it be going hiking, going to Moore Park, or going to the tennis court, everyone always has plenty of
fun and gets challenged in different ways. One of the events this semester that I really enjoyed and
valued from would the the Fall Mountain Retreat Hike.
The Fall Mountain Retreat Hike that I went on this year was in Vermont. Mr. Philbrick led the way on
the very first Vermont hike for this retreat. Although it was a mild hike, we still had some challenges
faced. At certain points, there were boulders in our way, so we crunched down to hoist ourselves up
through them. Once we finally made it to the top, there was a beautiful cabin with a phenomenal view.
Not only that, however, but there was a water tower! Most of us climbed approximately forty feet up
and got a better view than ever imagined.
On this hike, I learned an amazing amount of knowledge about myself that I did not know before. One
would be that I am very squeamish when it comes to walking through spider webs! But more serious
than that, I learned that taking a risk and not letting my fears control me will benefit me in the long
run. I am terrified of heights, but with a bit of a nudge from others, I climbed the forty foot tower.
Despite being nervous on the way up, when I got to the top, it was as if I I had no fear at all. The view
was overwhelmingly breathtaking! One last factor that I

The Driving Of Car Cars
It s all fun and games till someone gets hurt, is something I have heard constantly ever since my hot
wheel days. Now as I have grown into a young adult cars are something I eat, breath, and dream about
cars. As I got older, I constantly am modifying and making sure my car is always clean as glass. I
enjoy being around cars, there is always the jeopardies of being a car enthusiast are always being
annoyingly cautious of cars, having constant money issues, and also getting into trouble.
First, one problem that is facing most car guys is that they are on top of the actions that happen near
their car. Car guys are constantly cleaning their car. When passing by one there is a tendency of seeing
them hold on to a microfiber towel and detailer spray to keep their cars clean. In my case, you will
never seem without my Chemical Guy quick detailer in my hand, making sure my car shines as bright
as it can possibly. Next, car guys always tend to park ridiculously. They will always take up more than
one space just so that no one ever mess up their paint jobs. Even when parking on a sidewalk, they try
to stay away from the curb so they don t scratch the rims that they have. I have an issue with my car
being too low and always either scraping the bottom of my car or even my rims. Finally, they always
have a trend of giving people dirty looks. When they see someone or to get something close to their
car they start to have a mini heart attack and rush as fast as they can to make sure the

Good Readers Good Writers
Nabokov: Providing a Flood and Lifeboat
In Nabokov s 1948 Good Readers and Good Writers, the reader has the opportunity to view the
possibilities of a beautiful collision of a major reader and a major writer. This piece discusses reading
and writing: skills that have become standardized and slightly devalued as education has advanced.
Literacy has become so expected that little thought is put into what defines a good reader or writer;
Nabokov tackles this idea head on. Nabokov s intention of this piece is to passionately display a
relationship that is formed between a good reader and a good writer, and the essential need for an open
mind. He stresses the vitality of understanding instead of immediately identifying when reading; ...

Instead Nabokov states: study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something
brand new, having no obvious connection with the worlds we already know (1). When approached in
such a manner a major reader can see the new world in its entirety and once it has been explored and
understood then there is room to compare its connections to other worlds and knowledge.
Nabokov uses bold and unafraid language to emphasize his thoughts and chooses to speak only to
those who choose to listen. The lesson he teaches requires the audience to look past personal
comparison and preference. The audience must gain understand and appreciate first; then let Nabokov
s ideas apply to the world of reading and writing they themselves know it. Nabokov displays this
message by refusing to dull any of his thoughts: for example phrases like, Can anybody be so naive as
to think he or she can learn anything about the past from those... historical novels? (1). He still has a
definite message but in a lot of sentences and phrases they have a condescending punch to them.
Nabokov uses superlatives such as: the best temperament for a reader to have... (3). As well as
opinionated statements such as: nothing is more boring or more unfair... (1). Statements like these can
prevent his audience to open their minds because his language is emotionally provoking. Nabokov
purposely tests his audience by using powerful provoking language

I Had Never Get Out Of Your Head
You know that experience you have that you can really never get out of your head? It is not a good
memory, one you will probably not tell your mother about until you are well in your forties? I had one
of those during my second week of college. My group of friends that experienced this night with me
included my roommate Dionia, Reggie, Reginald, and Fredrek. I met Reggie through Dionia, they are
both from Orangeburg, SC and attended the same high school. Reginald is Reggie s roommate which
is how I met Reginald, and Fredrek is Reginald s friend. Fredrek, Reginald and I all happen to be from
the same town so we all clicked instantly. The second week of school we were all ready to go out and
had some fun, that night we decided to meet up in my dorm so we could go out together. Until that
night on Franklin Boulevard I had never felt so scared and helpless in my life.
I was never a person to go out and party in my hometown, but being 18 and in college I decided I
would branch out a little but not to where I would be uncomfortable. Coming to Greensboro I knew
there were parts of the city that were prone to violence, being new to the city I did not know where
those areas were just yet. We decided earlier in the week that we were going to go out that Saturday,
Fredrek started looking on Snapchat for addresses or any flyers for parties that we could go to. He
found two, one was downtown at a club and the other was a house party. The night we were going out
we took an Uber while

Mr. Birling starts on another speech around the dinner table, he starts to talk about the engagement of
his daughter and Gerald and how wonderful it is but he soon changes the theme of the speech to his
own beliefs and knowledge of the whole world, showing how egotistical he is. When Mr.Birlings
starts rambling on about war and how it is inevitable, the irony is shown to the audience. An Inspector
Calls is set in 1912, before the First World War, and was written in 1945.
The Audience is very well informed of Mr. Birling s visions of the future and so when he says how
war is inevitable, when it has already happened; twice, the irony is clear to the audience. This lets the
audience make an informed decision on the way they feel about Mr.
Birling, which would probably be that he is a self indulged man that only worries about his reputation

Mr. Birling is publicly conscious of himself; he is obsessed with his social status and is always
looking to climb the social ladder. Mr.
Birling is trying to impress Gerald;
But what I wanted to say is there s a fair chance that I might find my way into the next honors list. Just

Birling wanted to say to Gerald was that he was going to achieve a

Animal farm and 1984
Napoleon, the leader of all the animals of the Rebellion, can be compared and contrasted with Big
Brother, the leader of all the people of 1984. Both Big Brother and Napoleon show the qualities of a

than openly. However, unlike Napoleon, Big Brother periodically appears on the television screen.
Napoleon and Big Brother both work continually to weaken their rivals, whether it is by removing

For example, revolting the government, all of the animals on the farm group together to overthrow

The Positive And Negative Impact Of Social Media And...
Introduction Since the new phones are coming out with more and more accessibility to the internet
from almost anywhere, social media has grown tremendously. Young teens have unlimited access to
sites that influence how they dress, act and talk as well as what they talk about. Social media is not the
only type, there are multiple types of media that can play roles in the lives of these adolescents. Mass
media plays an intricate role in shaping the minds and ideas of the current adolescent generation in
both positive and negative ways. The article Growing Up Wired discusses the impact that social
networking sites have had on adolescents and their use of the sites. I hope to discover whether mass
media has a positive or negative effect on adolescents by using its impacts and applying them to both
sociological concepts of identity as well as groupthink. Media Usage In the article there are many
staggering facts about how often social media sites are used and what adolescents are using them for.
The article estimates that 11 18 year olds spend up to 11 hours a day on the social media sites and
exposed to media via electronics. It is estimated that approximately 73% of adolescents are on social
networking sites whether they meet the age restriction or not. The young people s parents are
following the footsteps of them by starting to use the sits they see the adolescents on after the
adolescents have started using it, this is a parallel to what was expected since these sites were
originally adult oriented and created for an older audience. A majority of young people will wake up
and check their social media profiles as well as check them again before going to bed at night. How
that Impacts Day to Day Life The constant checking of social media and electronic sites can become
interruptive to daily tasks. For things like paying attention in class the thought of checking social
networking sites can be enough cause for distraction. Wondering whether you received any snapchats
from people or how many likes your last picture got can be temptation enough to pull out a phone and
check to see if you have notifications from your favourite sites. When put into new situations or put
around new people, adolescents

How Did The Witches Influence Macbeth
In general, there are many instances where the supernatural world has a major effect on a person s life.
This can happen in reality and in fantasies. In the play Tragedy of Macbeth, the supernatural world
takes a place in the characters lives. Throughout Shakespeare s writing, the witches words have an
immense influence on Macbeth s life. Three impactful things that the witches did are that they say
Macbeth will be king, Banquo s son will become king and the witches sayings stick with Macbeth. To
start, the witches tell Macbeth that he will be king, which has a major impact on him. Macbeth and

As the witches tell Macbeth and Banquo the prophecies, Macbeth is repeating what they say word for

shall be kings / B: You shall be king / M: And Thane of Cawdor too. Went it not so? / B: To th
selfsame tune and words (Shakespeare 1.2.89). By having this conversation, Macbeth understands
what the witches are saying. He repeats their words for emphasis. Thus explains how the witches have
an immense influence on Macbeth. By him repeating the words of the witches, it means that he is
eager for change. He immediately wants to take charge to become king. Additionally, in Kranz s

infer that Macbeth and the witches speak the same language by mere chance or that the latter s words

hero and the supernatural hags is established well before the actual staged temptation of the former .
This shows how Macbeth is influenced by what the witches say. This article expresses how Macbeth is

Are Sports Good For Children
Some think that sports are good for children because they help with making friends and it helps they
children with school and their grades. But, others think that it is a bad thing for children some people
say that it costs too much or they don t want the risk of getting injured. This is an issue that needs to
be solved. Should we let children play sports or should they not.? Some sports put s too much pressure
on some youths and injuries are at high risks to happen to youths. One reason that sports are negative
because a lot of pressure goes onto the children and most injuries happen during some youth sports. In
the article Listening to Wisdom From a 10 Year Old Boy About his Head Injury Adam Buckley Cohen

This proves that some children and youths don t have the confidence to go out and play weather they
don t think they are good or they don t think that they are skinny enough. And that they just don t
enough of confidence in themselves. Injuries are a dangerous thing and also serious thing when it
comes to sports and it needs to be taking seriously, if they have never had one before they would not
know what if will feel like. It is clear that some sports are good for youths but most sports aren t, since
it causes injuries some most sports cause too much pressure. The reason that the evidence and the
claim are important because it explains what is the good and bad parts of sports. Both sides are still
taking about sports and what are the benefits and the disagreements are the benefits is that they would
make new friend and stay in the sport, but the bad thing is that they may not enjoy the sport and they
may just want to quit. Parents should not pressure the child so much into doing that

English As A Global Language
English as a Global Language English is a lingua franca (ELF) where the use of English language is a
common language between speakers whose native languages are different (Merriam Webster
Dictionary 2015). However, this does not mean that ELF interactions are speaking what is considered
proper English, but whether or not they effectively communicate. This does not exclude native
speakers, but rather it places emphasis on the interactions between persons of different mother tongues
and cultural backgrounds. While other scholars argue that ELF neutrality is cultural free or not (House
2003), Hülmbauer (2007) views it as multicultural because it seems likely that the ELF users develop
their own markers of identity (be they of a common European or international nature or more
individual ones which are created online, depending on the community of practice they are emerging
in). More often than not, ELF interactions stay between non native speakers where native speakers
make up the minority (Paradowski 2008). When discussing ELF interactions, there is this notion that
that speakers of ELF feel as though they do not have to adhere to native speaker norms, but only use it
accommodate to their communicative needs (Firth 1996). Linguistic expert Braj Kachru (1985)
integrates ELF into a model of circles: the Inner Circle, Outer Circle, and the Expanding Circle. These
circles represent the types of spread, the patterns of acquisition and the functional domains in which

Milton Friedman Essay
Milton Friedman
Milton Friedman has been credited with many different achievements, including being one of the most
effective advocates of economic freedoms and free enterprise, being the greatest economist to ever
walk the face of the earth, and proving every single word that Lord Maynard Keynes ever said to be
wrong. Why these may or may not all be true, it is obvious that Friedman was a brilliant man of many
accomplishments.
Milton Friedman was born on July 15th, 1912 in New York City. His parents were poor immigrants
and his father died when he was a senior in high school. Despite all of these obstacles he had to
overcome, Friedman received a scholarship to Rutgers University and got his B.A., an M.A. in 1933

The Theory Of Self And Identity Essay
The idea of self and identity is highly intricate, and the self can either be one of three options: the self
is private, constructive, or a mixture of both. In the private viewpoint, the self is static, founded on a
set number of traits, values, and dispositions that will not change with time. The constructivist theory
argues that the self is changeable by nature and changes based on varying circumstances. Then, there is
the mixture idea, that these separate opposing ideas are connected, as the way the self is developed
and reflected upon is based on how the brain and individual thoughts develop. This is highlighted in
Gopnik s statement that, Ourselves shape our brains at least as much as our brains our selves (Gopnik
2). When reflecting on Gopnik s article more it seems only logical to think that some parts of the self
is constructed, whereas other parts are private, and this completely depends on the environment of the
child. Parenting styles is one of those environmental aspects, and it largely impacts how a child s
socioemotional, and language skills develop, which in turn has a ripple effect on how the child
ultimately views their own personality and self. The most telling test to measure socioemotional
development of a child is through attachment, and the most successful way to measure this is through
the strange experiment. Children are classed as insecure resistant, insecure disorganized, insecure
avoidant, or secure based on how they behave during the

John Keating, a student at Welton Academy inspired his fellow classmates, to meet in caves and read
challenging poetry of the past, not with flashcards, but with these words, Now, my class, you will

anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world. Typically, students do not hear enough of
this type of passion in a traditional classroom. However, a progressive classroom, be it a cave or

John Dewey, another educational philosopher believed Education is a social process. Education is
growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself. (Inc.) He felt that learning took
place only when students had internalized what they had gained through experience and practiced it in
their own lives. In a progressive classroom, the teacher designs experiences for students with the idea
that through experience, students build knowledge and skills. A society of individuals conforming to
studying flashcards may be good, but a society of literate individuals consciously aware of why and
how the facts on the flashcards and in mass media can solve new problems is better.
A progressive classroom looks different, and a progressive teacher inspires unique thinking in

February 11, 2015 A Separate Peace Symbolism Essay Every book every written has symbolism, no
established author would write a book without a hidden theme or meaning. Many areas of A Separate
Peace have symbolism alluding towards World War II and many hidden themes revolve around the
war. The war represents the final step in loss of innocence the boys face while at Devon. World War II
represents the imminent trials of adulthood and the triumph of evil over good in the novel. Even the
safe walls of Devon couldn t keep away the impending struggles the boys are going to face in the real
world, the war being the nearest struggle to come. The only thing that lets Gene forget the war is
Finny, who represents innocence and youth, as well as his time spent at Devon during the summer. ...

This quote shows that although Gene was well aware of the war and their naivety to ignore it, this
selfishness gave them time to continue experiencing their youth while they still had the chance. The
reason the symbolism of the summer session was included in the novel was to show the drastic
changes the boys underwent before and after the stress of the war was felt and the loss of innocence

Joyce Carol Oates Smooth Talk
Compare and Contrast Essay Short stories don t always translate well into full length movies, but this
movie, Smooth Talk, by Joyce Chopra, is a wonderful work based on the story, Where Are You Going,
Where Have You Been, by Joyce Carol Oates. The movie is very different from the original work,
both have the same storyline, both talk about a teenage girl name Connie. When putting these two
together, while similarity in many ways, but at the same time, they both have differences throughout
the entire story, from what we imagine of the characters to the ending of the story. As in the short
story, the story is more about Connie and Oates only uses a few sentences to describe her family
members, she doesn t provide much detail either. On the other hand, in the movie by Joyce Chopra,
she adds a few scene and even developing further more into the other characters, such as the mother,
father and her older sister, June. The main theme is still about Connie but also about her family. By
doing this, it can create more connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ends with no other explain, and the ending is up to the reader to decide, which makes the story more

new feeling to it. The new ending solves all the conflict between the mother and Connie when they
finally accept each other. Her sister, June, at the very last scene of the movie, is finally able to sit with
Connie and talks about what has happened. Overall it is a happy ending comparing to the short story
that it s based on. The ending makes it look like the ride with Arnold Friend was just another

The Social Causes Of Social Solutions To Climate Change
Climate change is one of the most harmful things to humanity because it affects everyone who lives
on Earth. Though there are social problems, such as war or racism, that may affect certain groups of
people, even those with no human contact are affected by climate change in some way.
Although part of climate change is caused by natural forces, humans unquestionably do contribute to
the effects of climate change. As a whole society, we all impact climate change. This cannot be
blamed on an individual and their choices. Those people didn t chose to be affected by climate change
in any way. They did not have free choice in whether or not to contribute to climate change. It wasn t a
few people that added on to the effects due to selfishness or cruelty and people don t contribute
because of psychological or physical issues within themselves. It is all of our combined actions that
add up and have the effects of the climate change we see today.
In order to combat a social issue, we must have social solutions to this problem. It is essential for us to
come together and fight against warming and climate change. The less we blame others and start
acting upon this issue ourselves, we will have a bigger impact on climate change quicker and more
efficiently. Though we have been dealing with the human influence on climate change for centuries,
especially since the Industrial Revolution, we can still lessen the effects. We can t expect the problem
to go away if only a few people decide to

Thornton Wilder
Throughout the play, Thornton Wilder seems to suggest that everyday events make up a special and
beautiful life. The author includes multiple different scenes to represent the simplicity of life. As the
Stage Manager describes the death of Joe Crowell, the bright student headed to be engineer, he implies
the idea that one should acknowledge the small yet great things in life before it s too late. The author
also includes the death of Emily which questions how much humans understand of life. This event lets
readers take in the beautiful moments in their lives and recognize the small things that make them

Emily finds joy in the small things like how the moonlight s so won derful and so is the smell of
Mrs.Gibbs heliotrope (45). Emily appreciates the little things in life like the beautiful moonlight and

life so much more special. Emily is chatting with her father and enjoys this time to comment on the
simple things of nature. This relates to life now since there are many things that we do everyday that
are simply beautiful. Since they are young, the children don t realize the mundane action of going to
school makes up their special lives. The children meet, down center and head towards Main Street,
then turn left (16) to go to school. The children are going about their everyday lives but don t seem to
realize that simple actions like this can make life so beautiful and something to celebrate about. Wilder
shows this common theme by having the two families go through everyday life, placing emphasis on

J. R. R. Tolkien once said, The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you
cannot forever fence it out. We can try to escape any sorts of adventure by clinging to our routine and
repetitious lives, yet it often arrives unexpectedly. For Bilbo Baggins, the prudent protagonist of
J.R.R. Tolkien s The Hobbit, adventure simply arrives on his doorstep. Bilbo had always led a simple
life as a hobbit in the town of Hobbiton, but one day a wizard named Gandalf and thirteen dwarves

Before Bilbo s adventure begins, there is already conflict between him and the untidy and uncivilized
dwarves during the unexpected dinner party (13). After this conflict is resolved, with the help of
Gandalf and his encouraging words, and the company starts on their journey, they encounter conflict
with a groups of trolls. Again, Gandalf saves the company from their predicament, but it is only
moments later when the group faces more conflict. Additionally, throughout the entirety of the novel,
there is Character versus Character conflict present between Bilbo and Thorin. Their contrasting
personalities cause them to disagree on most decisions and to not develop faith in each other. And, it is
not until the very end of the novel, only moments before his death, that Thorin expresses, I wish to
part in friendship from you (262) allowing him and Bilbo to put all of their disputes behind them.
Bilbo and the corrupted hobbit Gollum also display Character versus Character conflict but on a much
more radical level. Initially, Gollum attempts to eat Bilbo but is then persuaded to engage in a riddle
contest in order to decide Bilbo s fate. The two exchange several riddles such as, voiceless it cries,
wingless it flutters, toothless bites, mouthless mutters [wind] (70) before Bilbo asks an unanswerable
question and loses Gollum s confidence. The conflict

The Pros And Cons Of Grief Counseling
Losing a loved one can be a traumatic situation in anyone s life. The bereavement process can take a
tremendous toll on a person. There are no gender, age, sex, color or religion specifics that dictate the
length of grievance, it all depends on the individual. The loss of loved one brings grim magnitudes for
the body and the emotional state of a person and can sometimes be so extreme that it can alter the
health of a human being. Grief counseling eases the bereavement process by providing patients many
methods that will assist in dealing with the pain throughout their life. In multiculturalism people deal

My dream in life is to become a professional longboarder. It has been a dream of mine for quite some

riding is also hard but I am starting to do it more often so I can get better at it. Drifting I m not the best
at it but I can sort of do it a little, I am also starting to crouch down on my board to help with speed
and turning. I have met some more people from longboarding thru town and alongside the canyon and
it s good experiences to hear what people have to say and the stories that they tell me. Not everyone I
meet longboards though I have meet people who ve traveled lots of places and explore and there really
positive nice people. The biggest reason I want to become a professional longboard would be because
it feels amazing to get out of the house and go explore to see what the world is made of. The world is
such a beautiful place and one day I would like to travel out of the country and go explore other parts
of the world and see what else is out there. Another big part of longboarding is having the right
equipment, I have the right board, wheels, and bearings I just need to get a helmet and pads for when I
go downhill. Longboarding is just apart of me and makes up some of who I am it helps me open my
mind to new things and ideas and helps me when I m stressed because anytime I know I am, I can just

Storytelling Vs Storytelling
The novel is a modern, ever changing, and important tool that is utilized by different societies.
Storytelling did/does the same thing, however, and by finding the similarities between the two, it
appears to me that the novel is storytelling reborn. Theorist Walter Benjamin argues that novels have
done the opposite and have eradicated storytelling. He states that, ...the storyteller in his living
immediacy is by no means a present force. He has already become something remote from us and
something that is getting even more distant, which makes it seem as if the novel has destroyed the
sacred art of storytelling (Benjamin 77). Per contra, the novel has benefitted society just as much if not
more than storytelling. I have found that novels have taken the same tools that storytelling once used/
still use, such as open endings, re readability, community building, and more and have molded these
tools so that they are able to accomplish the same effects that storytelling can on a new scale. This
new scale simply means that the novel has taken the tools listed above and have utilized them in a way
that storytelling was unable to. The new technology that the printed novel brings not only attempts to
replicate storytelling technology but manages to do so. Thus we need to determine, first, if my
suspicions are correct and the novel has replaced or is at least vastly similar to storytelling. From
there, we can determine what it means to be a novel and what the novel can do with the

between religion and desire. The tension between religion and desire is most clearly demonstrated

He wishes for her to be pure to her desires and emotions. Her wants and need to be seen or recognized

Life and death are also described very well with imagery. Cynthia was described as a sign of life,
because she was true to her heart and her desires, while the matter was described as a symbol of death.
The contrast between Cynthia and the matter is very descriptive and reflects the author s use of
imagery very well. The narrator describes Cynthia as a great glow, a flow of life ; #8230; ;like a sun in

Back then people believed that money can be made over night just by investing. According to the Wall
Street prep website, everyone used to look up to JP Morgan, the National City Bank, because they
were the leaders of the game. JP Morgan was making a great amount of money, so great that he
personally saved the country during the calamitous panic in 1907. Banks began to use their federal
loans in order to push the stock market forward and make more money, and on black Tuesday of
October 29 the stock market crashed which was one of the causes of the Great Depression.
Furthermore, Wall Street prep also explains that During the Great Depression, the nation s banking

The Glass Steagall Act was done by the government with hopes of bringing all of the banks back to

Government, Media, Censorship and Terrorism Perhaps We Can t Handle the Truth
Government and media influencing each other is a tender ethical situation. Initially, it seems simply
appalling that any government would either censor or use its media as a tool, but considering the
possible benefits of such acts makes the issue more complex. What if censorship saves lives? What if
manipulating the media brings a resolution to a conflict?
Wartime especially brings these questions to the forefront. When peoples lives are at stake, often
standard rules of morality must either be reconsidered or suspended. Wartime is also the only situation
in which the government could get the support of such practices from a constituency with a ... Show

A public outrage would follow such an action.
Yet, the American public is not opposed to such manipulation in other
countries, especially non Western and third world nations. James Adams
even writes that the US and UK leaked false stories into the Middle East
to build anti Saddam sentiment. These countries, like Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait, are allies. But, as Adams points out, we can reason this
deception as strategic vision. This practice is very telling of the
sociological phenomenon in America of indirectly viewing the non western
world as lesser people. It is a complete lack of respect for their
free thinking, and a measure that Americans would be incensed about if
it was committed towards them.
To a limited extent media manipulation is used even against Americans,
if not by directly doctoring the news that is presented to the country.
When false reports came out of soldiers in Bosnia killing babies, the
President still made references to the incident, although there existed
no evidence to support it. This type of media manipulation is a way of
saying that giving the public full and accurate information is a
hindrance to the war effort, that winning them over with propaganda is
more important to a successful military effort, which may be true.
Censorship is another similar issue. The word itself sends off warning signals, and flashes of fascism.
The Western populous tends to oppose

War of the Roses
War of the Roses For my research project I chose the war of the roses because it is interesting and
relates to us and where we live. I visited York, England this past Thanksgiving and learned some
background on this during our trip. York, England is about 3 hours north of London and is an
interesting medieval city with small narrow streets and modern living at the same time. The war of the
roses started on May 22, 1455 with the battle of St. Albans and ended on June 16, 1487 with the battle
of Stoke. King Henry VI and the Duke of Somerset, Edmund Beaufort, tried to keep the Duke of York,
Richard IV, out of politics. King Henry VI became ill and Richard IV took over power and by the time
King Henry VI became healthy again, Richard IV ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
King Henry VI was defeated and captured by the Yorkists and spent 7 years in the Tower of
Kingmaker . Edward IV, son of Richard IV, became the new king of England and one year later the
elderly King Henry VI was murdered at the hands of Richard V Duke of Gloucester Richard IV s son.
(Weir, Battle of St Albans, 2012) Four years prior to the battle of Towton, the Battle of Wakefield,
occurred and it had looked as though the Yorkists were going to dominate this war. During the Battle
of Wakefield the Yorkists received a devastating blow with the loss of their leader, Richard IV, and
other commanders during this battle. The Yorkist seamed defeated until the capture of King Henry VI.
The deciding factor in the war was during the battle of Edecote Moor when the Yorkists made a new
alliance with France and the King of England was also on their side. The new alliance with France and
the power of the king would prove to be the deciding factor in this war and would win the war for the
Yorkists. (Weir, Battle of Wakefield, 2012) During the Battle of Bosworth Field King Edward IV died
of an illness and his son Edward V became King at the age of 12. Richard V, the Duke of Gloucester,
held the throne until Edward the V became of age. This battle took place in a small town called
Market Bosworth and was the second to last battle of the war. (Weir, Battle of Bosworth, 2012) The
last battle was the Battle of Stoke; however there is some dispute by

The Symbolism Of A High End Luxury Brand
The typical impression someone leaves are often the first impression. Judgement based on appearance
is not a new concept. Scientifically proven, it takes a set amount of three seconds to determine the
type of impression the subject leaves. In those three seconds, appearance can be based on physical
looks and/or materialistic items. The symbolism of a high end luxury brand can imply the social
standing of a certain individual as well as their physical appearance. It is an invitation for society to
judge ones appearance and attitude, solely based upon what type of brand they wear and how they
look. In the concept of appearance, most people use their appearance as a tool to express their own
individualized style. With having individualized style, it works hand in hand with using fashion as a
way to identify ones social standing. As trends come and go, there are dedicated advocates of certain
styles. Those advocates might relate to that style by dressing in various different outfits that can be
jumbled up into a certain category. However, there are a few individuals that have certain looks that
sets them apart from the crowd. For example, in the mid 1960 s, British teenage model, Twiggy,
created a marketable style of an androgynous look consisting of large eyes, long eyelashes, and short
hair. That became her trademark and caused an uprising in her career as a significant pioneer in the
fashion industry. Her appearance created a whole new way of using a trademark as a way of

First Civilizations Influence On Egyptian Civilization
#12 Egyptian civilization, like other First Civilizations, did not develop by itself; many different
pastoral groups or civilizations influenced Egyptian civilization through trading goods and culture,
and helped Egyptians to develop its own unique culture. Being one of the greatest civilizations,
Mesopotamia, located between Euphrates and Tigris river, influenced Egypt civilization greatly, as
they were close in location. Because they could interact easily with each other, trading flourished, and
many goods and cultural insights were exchanged. Wheat and barley, which were the main food
source of Egyptians, were brought from Mesopotamia, which means that they had maintained the
mutual relationship between them, as well as helping Egyptian

Style Analysis of Amy Tan in The Joy Luck Club
Raymond Chandler, a fiction writer, once said, The most durable thing in writing is style. True, the
style is often defined as one of the most important elements in writing. In Amy Tan s novel, The Joy
Luck Club , the style significantly contributes to the development of both the tone and the theme of
the influences that a mother can have on her daughter. The author effectively portrays the somber tone
and the theme by using a concise style of diction, images, details, language, sentence structure, point
of view, and organization. The author emphasizes the tone and the theme of the novel by using a
variety of diction words that include repetition of words, archaic words, connotation, and abstract
diction. Primarily, the usage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the night, Lena hears shouts across the wall and also whack! whack! whack! , the sounds of
killing (Tan 114). The sight and sound imageries seem to indicate a lachrymose tone in Lena s house.
In general, these imageries provide a picture of melancholy, which achieves a somber tone of the
novel. Furthermore, the author explores the tone of the novel by providing specific details. In An mei s
childhood story, the author chooses to describe the pain An mei feels as the soup pours over her by
providing details of the twinge. She describes it as the kind of pain [specially] terrible that a little child
should never remember it and how it still remains in [An mei s] skin s memory (Tan 39). By depicting
these details of the pain, Tan expresses the feeling of misery An mei feels, which appends to the
melancholy tone. Additionally, in the story of Ying ying s first marriage, the author presents explicit
details of the emptiness Ying ying feels by portraying details of her as a tiger that neither pounce[s]
nor lay[s] waiting between the trees and an unseen spirit (Tan 285). This emptiness Ying ying feels
seems to indicate the melancholy tone that appears noticeable in the novel. Clearly, the details Amy
Tan chooses to describe in the novel seem to specify the somber tone. Likewise, the language the
author uses also clarifies the tone and the theme of the novel. In many positions in the novel,
languages such as grief, despair, hate, and revenge

  • 2. The Importance Of Life In Life What are some things most people live life without enjoying? Most of the time, it is the small things in life. Many people go through life, focusing on a big grand picture, but fail to enjoy the little moments in life that make them happy for just a second or will amuse them for awhile. In my opinion, if you live life worrying about what people think about you, or changing your lifestyle to fit in then you are not really enjoying life. I know this to be true because when I first moved to Heath, I was trying to fit in with people and made myself more like them rather than show them who I truly am. I realized quickly that if they didn t like me for me then they were not the people I should hang out with. When I got into high school, I was acting more like myself and was enjoying the little things that made me laugh or made others laugh. That ranged from being able to crack a joke sometimes to even just enjoying the music in the library and dancing a little to have some fun. I really think that no matter what we do in life there should always be some time to do things that are just fun and they don t have to be on a big scale of events. One of the things I do is I compete in different athletic events, and there are times that the guys from the team will all go do something and I will just take off and go on my own and sit to watch the world around me, listening as the world carries on. Something I know that I am guilty of is living life in the fast lane and not realizing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Asian American Stereotypes In Pop Culture The view of POCs (People of Color) within mainstream media has always been strewed. From the roles of Flora Robson as a Haitian maid in Saratoga Trunk to Mickey Rooney as I. Y. Yunioshi, the view of POCs in American popular culture has always been warped to portray an often negative or demeaning stereotype that appeases the white audience of American pop culture. Although many races are negatively impacted by the conceptions of the white American public, the portrayal of Asian American stereotypes in television has especially given an illusion to the American public on what to assume when facing an Asian American. Even with the growth of the Asian American voice in television and the increase in representation through new shows such as Fresh Off the Boat and Marco ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anna May Wong s role within this show started her pathway to a road of notable legacy. With this, there was a foot in the door for Asian American actors and through Wong s film appearances and prominent magazine features that helped humanize Chinese Americans, especially to the white audiences, during a period of what was seen as an overt of racism and discrimination. However, despite Wong s roles, which brought attention and peace to Chinese Americans, not all was happy with Wong s portrayal in films such as Dragon Lady and Butterfly which embodied stereotypes of the Asian population while Chinese Nationalists did not portrayed such that in mainstream American media. Following Wong s success in television, it would not be until roughly a decade later when actor George Takei was casted as Lt. Hikaru Sulu in the second Star Trek pilot. Within his time as an actor, he was also casted as Science Officer in the original pilot of Star Trek and has since appeared on various media outlets, providing the voice for multiple science fiction cartoons and video ... • 5. Why The Coin Doctrine Will Affect The Way Organisations... Counter insurgency (COIN) operations are employed to combat an insurgency. These types of operations present a highly complex operating environment within which conventional warfare is becoming more and more ineffective. COIN operations form are large proportion of modern conflicts and it is forcing organisations to develop new strategies and tactics in order for them to remain within the legal bounds of international humanitarian law (IHL). This essay will explore how committing to a COIN doctrine will affect the way organisations uphold the principles of IHL. It will also explore whether a COIN doctrine will be effective in completing operations. An insurgency is defined by the United States government as the organised use of subversion and violence to seize, nullify or challenge political control of a region . Insurgencies have been present throughout history as a form of warfare, however combatting an insurgency has always been difficult even in the modern era. Whether it be going hiking, going to Moore Park, or going to the tennis court, everyone always has plenty of fun and gets challenged in different ways. One of the events this semester that I really enjoyed and valued from would the the Fall Mountain Retreat Hike. The Fall Mountain Retreat Hike that I went on this year was in Vermont. Mr. Philbrick led the way on the very first Vermont hike for this retreat. Although it was a mild hike, we still had some challenges faced. At certain points, there were boulders in our way, so we crunched down to hoist ourselves up through them. Once we finally made it to the top, there was a beautiful cabin with a phenomenal view. Not only that, however, but there was a water tower! Most of us climbed approximately forty feet up and got a better view than ever imagined. On this hike, I learned an amazing amount of knowledge about myself that I did not know before. One would be that I am very squeamish when it comes to walking through spider webs! But more serious than that, I learned that taking a risk and not letting my fears control me will benefit me in the long run. I am terrified of heights, but with a bit of a nudge from others, I climbed the forty foot tower. Despite being nervous on the way up, when I got to the top, it was as if I I had no fear at all. Literacy has become so expected that little thought is put into what defines a good reader or writer; Nabokov tackles this idea head on. Nabokov uses bold and unafraid language to emphasize his thoughts and chooses to speak only to those who choose to listen. The lesson he teaches requires the audience to look past personal comparison and preference. The audience must gain understand and appreciate first; then let Nabokov s ideas apply to the world of reading and writing they themselves know it. Social media is not the only type, there are multiple types of media that can play roles in the lives of these adolescents. Mass media plays an intricate role in shaping the minds and ideas of the current adolescent generation in both positive and negative ways. The article Growing Up Wired discusses the impact that social networking sites have had on adolescents and their use of the sites. I hope to discover whether mass media has a positive or negative effect on adolescents by using its impacts and applying them to both sociological concepts of identity as well as groupthink. Media Usage In the article there are many staggering facts about how often social media sites are used and what adolescents are using them for. The article estimates that 11 18 year olds spend up to 11 hours a day on the social media sites and exposed to media via electronics. It is estimated that approximately 73% of adolescents are on social networking sites whether they meet the age restriction or not. The young people s parents are following the footsteps of them by starting to use the sits they see the adolescents on after the adolescents have started using it, this is a parallel to what was expected since these sites were originally adult oriented and created for an older audience. A majority of young people will wake up and check their social media profiles as well as check them again before going to bed at night. How that Impacts Day to Day Life The constant checking of social media and electronic sites can become interruptive to daily tasks. For things like paying attention in class the thought of checking social networking sites can be enough cause for distraction. English As A Global Language English as a Global Language English is a lingua franca (ELF) where the use of English language is a common language between speakers whose native languages are different (Merriam Webster Dictionary 2015). However, this does not mean that ELF interactions are speaking what is considered proper English, but whether or not they effectively communicate. This does not exclude native speakers, but rather it places emphasis on the interactions between persons of different mother tongues and cultural backgrounds. While other scholars argue that ELF neutrality is cultural free or not (House 2003), Hülmbauer (2007) views it as multicultural because it seems likely that the ELF users develop their own markers of identity (be they of a common European or international nature or more individual ones which are created online, depending on the community of practice they are emerging in). More often than not, ELF interactions stay between non native speakers where native speakers make up the minority (Paradowski 2008). When discussing ELF interactions, there is this notion that that speakers of ELF feel as though they do not have to adhere to native speaker norms, but only use it accommodate to their communicative needs (Firth 1996). The Theory Of Self And Identity Essay The idea of self and identity is highly intricate, and the self can either be one of three options: the self is private, constructive, or a mixture of both. In the private viewpoint, the self is static, founded on a set number of traits, values, and dispositions that will not change with time. The constructivist theory argues that the self is changeable by nature and changes based on varying circumstances. Then, there is the mixture idea, that these separate opposing ideas are connected, as the way the self is developed and reflected upon is based on how the brain and individual thoughts develop. This is highlighted in Gopnik s statement that, Ourselves shape our brains at least as much as our brains our selves (Gopnik 2). When reflecting on Gopnik s article more it seems only logical to think that some parts of the self is constructed, whereas other parts are private, and this completely depends on the environment of the child. Though there are social problems, such as war or racism, that may affect certain groups of people, even those with no human contact are affected by climate change in some way. Although part of climate change is caused by natural forces, humans unquestionably do contribute to the effects of climate change. As a whole society, we all impact climate change. This cannot be blamed on an individual and their choices. Those people didn t chose to be affected by climate change in any way. They did not have free choice in whether or not to contribute to climate change. It wasn t a few people that added on to the effects due to selfishness or cruelty and people don t contribute because of psychological or physical issues within themselves. It is all of our combined actions that add up and have the effects of the climate change we see today. In order to combat a social issue, we must have social solutions to this problem. It is essential for us to come together and fight against warming and climate change. The less we blame others and start acting upon this issue ourselves, we will have a bigger impact on climate change quicker and more efficiently. Storytelling did/does the same thing, however, and by finding the similarities between the two, it appears to me that the novel is storytelling reborn. Theorist Walter Benjamin argues that novels have done the opposite and have eradicated storytelling. He states that, ...the storyteller in his living immediacy is by no means a present force. He has already become something remote from us and something that is getting even more distant, which makes it seem as if the novel has destroyed the sacred art of storytelling (Benjamin 77). Per contra, the novel has benefitted society just as much if not more than storytelling. I have found that novels have taken the same tools that storytelling once used/ still use, such as open endings, re readability, community building, and more and have molded these tools so that they are able to accomplish the same effects that storytelling can on a new scale. This new scale simply means that the novel has taken the tools listed above and have utilized them in a way that storytelling was unable to. The new technology that the printed novel brings not only attempts to replicate storytelling technology but manages to do so.
