The Collapse of Barings Bank
This story begins with a former back office clerk being promoted to a derivatives trader for Barings
Bank s Singapore Branch and ends with the collapse of a 232 year old banking empire. As we began
researching this assignment, we all asked the same question, How does a 28 year old trader bring
about the collapse of a 232 year old banking empire?
To understand how this debacle came about, one must have a basic understanding of the nature of a
derivative and what they are designed to do. Initially, derivatives were designed to provide an
investor/trader with a type of insurance against unexpected movements in prices which could
devastate an investment portfolio. These derivatives take the form of futures and options:

Also, the Director of BSS/Regional Manager of the South Asian Region, failed to see that the
recommendations of the company s internal audit were carried out.
This power vacuum left Leeson virtually unsupervised and allowed Leeson to continue to engage in
activities which brought about the collapse of Barings Bank.
Internal problem #3 Failure to act upon relevant information
In many instances, Barings senior management were notified of potential problems arising from the
activities of Nick Leeson. Had senior management acted upon all of the information available to
them, the collapse of Barings Bank could have been averted.
Internal problem #4 Failure to understand the transactions and the risks they entailed.
Senior management was under the impression that the investments Leeson was involved in were
virtually riskless. Due to the fact that Leeson s trading activities contributed significantly to the
bank s profitability, senior management seemed blissfully unaware of the risks Leeson s activities
posed to the health of the institution. Few in the organization questioned how such riskless
investments
were able to generate such tremendous profits.
These internal problems contributed to the ultimate downfall of a 232 year old banking empire.

A Research Study On An Academic Research Essay
1.0 Introduction
An academic research involves a comprehensive investigation of theories, principles and decisions
criteria among other study materials with an aim of identifying facts and drawing conclusions.
Ultimately, there are lots of benefits associated with research in learning as well as in solving real
life problems. For instance, it allows for knowledge building through evaluation of existing
theories (Webb, 2007). In this case, the researcher is exposed to research work conducted earlier
and the methodologies that were applied in various cases. As such, research improves knowledge of
the participants. Additionally, research is important in sieving the lies and identifying the facts in a
certain frontier of knowledge. Consequently, this is important in improving theories and making
them more applicable to routine and strategic tasks at both personal and organisational levels.
Furthermore, research is a lifetime opportunity to young scholars that are interested in pursuing
research work as full time careers. In particular, it provides knowledge and background principles
that will be used in future analysis. It is important to note that there are research objectives; as such,
it ensures that certain goals are met at the end of the activity.
Therefore, this paper will entail research on the Perfect Competition Theory to determine its
validity and reliability in market analysis. Firstly, the paper will outline the objectives of the
research and provide methodologies

Joy Luck Club Meaning
The song Keep Me in Your Heart , as sung by Warren Zevon, would add so much to the scene in
The Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan 1), as it matches perfectly with the depressing, morbid mood the
scene is trying to portray, and also because it sheds some light into the motive of Suyuan s
actions through its poetic and thoughtful lyrics. This song was picked first because I believe it
would perfectly introduce the reader/audience to the book and allow them to connect with more
than just the text. Firstly, the song portrays emotions of longing and broken heartedness through
its sad and slow tempo and its depressingly perfect lyrics. The lyrics Keep me in your heart for a
while//If I leave you it doesn t mean I love you any less (Warren Zevon 1) just show exactly how
emotional this song is, as the singer here clearly feels longing for someone, just as Suyuan feels
longing for her lost home and, most importantly, the babies she lost. Just the... Show more content

Although the song speaks of the singer s significant other, the poetic lyrics are still universal.
Along the path, Suyuan made sacrifices, but the most significant of them was leaving her two
babies (revealed by Your father is not my first husband. You are not those babies. [Amy Tan 3])
behind in hopes that they would survive. The lyrics Sometimes when you re doin simple things
around the house//Maybe you ll think of me and smile (Warren Zevon 2) can definitely be
applied to the emotions Suyuan is going through, as she feels horrible for leaving behind her
babies, but she sure hopes and has the longing that Maybe [they ll] think of me and smile (Warren
Zevon 3). The lyrics Keep me in your heart for a while (Warren Zevon 3) also complement how
Suyuan feels loss for her daughters but only hopes that they won t ever forget about their true

Anatomy Of The Knee Injuries
Movement from the lower extremities of the human body depends on the strength, agility and
flexibility of the knee. Bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments and tendons assist with the knee getting
the job done (NIH, n.d.). While supporting the body to walk, run and jump, the knee is at risk for
enduring a torn anterior cruciate ligament(ACL). This type of injury can pose a threat to athletes
and their careers. When the ACL is torn, the body will lose stability and the inability to bear the
weight of the athlete. Sports competitors are vulnerable to enduring a torn ACL injury during their
sports career due to the roughness when playing sports, female athletes having a higher risk, it is
rated number one as the most common sports injury.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sports that are more inclined to suffer ACL tears include soccer, basketball, football and tennis
(Souryal, n.d.). The University of California, San Francisco reveals that the ACL injury has an
annual incidence of more than 200,000 cases with ~100,000 of these knees reconstructed annually
(Kim, 2009). The vulnerability of a torn ACL in athletes is 1,000 to one (Souryal, n.d.). //////////////
////////////////
The ACL is the primary ligament which is considered as the stabilizer. The ACL is just one of four
major ligaments of the joints within the knees (Kim, 2009). The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL),
medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) make up the other three
ligaments that supports the knee joints. Signs and symptoms of a torn a torn ACL include swelling
of the knee, pain that is intensified when the weight of the body is placed on it. The inability to
bend the knee is another sign of a torn ACL due to the bleeding inside the joint (MedicineNet, n.d.).
Methods to diagnosis a torn ACL injury includes
Lachman Test Passive accessory movement that is used to assess both the single and sagittal
plane instability (Physiopedia, n.d.). The body of the athlete is in a supine position while their
knee is flexed to about 20 to 30 degrees as well as rotated externally. The physician or the physical
therapist will then place their hands on both the tibia and the

An Explanation of the British s Stuggles to Finance the...
The article written by Javier Cuenca Esteban, The British balance of payments, 1772 1820: India
transfers and war finance focuses on the British ability to finance the wars with Napoleonic France.
Esteban challenges the academic state of debate regarding the importance of exports on British
Industrialization by pointing out that he believes without the exports from India, Britain would
have struggled to finance her wars with France and may have never become the incubator of
Industrialization. His argument comes back to the numbers he presents projecting the gap between
foreign indebtedness actual and counterfactual would increase from 1802 to 1815 by over ninety
million British pound sterling. The significant increase in debt was... Show more content on

Esteban sets the value of his calculations by creating an average of pre existing calculations for
the earliest time frame of 1772 1775 of net British debts. He relies mainly on figures derived from
Walter Nash and Albert H. Imlah, both of which are Economic British Historians. The author then
begins to advance each line according to their own specific histories. For instance he takes into
account the raise of tariffs on certain products such as tobacco that would affect the quantity of
illegal imports, thus affecting the real credit value. The author also goes into great detail to
compensate for the stated inaccuracies of some numbers, by showing how numbers counter
balance one another to give an accurate final account of net credits. In the appendix he goes into
great depth to explain each category as well as giving a price evidence for numerous specific
commodities traded between Britain and India during this time period.
Esteban concludes with acknowledging the weaker values for some of the credits. He makes it
clear the entire process of the time period moving from mercantilism to industrialization within the
time frame and the wars with France created extremely complex range of scenarios to explain the
balance of payments. He points out research in the areas of wealthy immigrants transfers and net
incomes, as well as capital flow from the British West Indies remain particularly difficult to
quantify. This gap in

Originalist Theory Of Originalism
The Originalist An Originalist is a principle of interpretation that views the Constitution s
meaning as fixed as of the time of enactment, in order words, an Originalist values and/or beliefs
were as the Constitution was stated. The Originalist followed the Constitution word by word. A
performance where the Originalist is performed is in Justices on the Stage this play shows how
the Originalist convey their beliefs. It shows how many political approaches are taken in place
when it comes to policies as in the death penalty and the right to bear an arm, how social is
involved for starters with same sex marriage and abortion, and how culture is also involved by the
Originalist beliefs. In the article Justice on the Stage, we read about how... Show more content on

The right to same sex marriage has been involved within the Constitution as part of Amendments
V, VIII, and XV. Marriage is both global and central. All across our country, in every region,
every social class, every race and ethnicity, every religion or non religion, people get married.
Same sex marriage was a division of social and political. An example of a court case dealing with
same sex marriage is Baehr v. Lewin. In 1993, Hawaii s high court issues first of a kind ruling
that a barrier to marriage is discrimination, launching the freedom to marry movement. Three
years later in 1996, a full trial took place and was decided that the same sex couples are entitled
to marriage licenses. Later in 1998, Hawaii amends its constitution with regard to marriage by
exempting same sex couples from protection of equality guarantee, giving legislature the power
to define marriage as limited to a man and a woman. However, a year later in 1999, Baehr v.
Lewin Hawaii s high court rules that Hawaii s constitution no longer protects lesbian and gay
individuals with regard to their freedom to marry. As in today, some states in the United States did
not approve the right for same sex marriage. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5 4
to force same sex marriage on all 50 states. According to the Supreme Court Justice page, The U.S.
Supreme Court has ruled that there is a federal constitutional right to

Cheerleading Satire
Mom, come on! I yell while I m already rushing to the car. Soon enough, she comes out the
garage and sits in front of me in the driver s seat. I listen excitedly as her keys jingle and feel so
much relief as the air vents come on, putting me out of my misery in the the dry, 95 degree heat.
The radio plays in the background while I look out the window at the scenery I see everyday on
my way to school. We re there within minutes and I jump out of the car and run to all the other
girls. The heat hits me like a truck and there s not a cloud in sight. The huge playground is behind
us, next to the Groveport Elementary building. We re facing the baseball diamond, surrounded by
a fence and a little red building is a bit to the left. Five, six, seven, eight, Coach M yells. Clap! One.

My ankles healed and I m back to cheerleading with no complications, I ve even been going to

handspring is easy because the floor is springy but the track at a football game is a whole
different story and I have to do it today. My heart is racing as we walk over to the other side of
the track to do our hello cheer to the other team. I think back to the few times I warmed it up
with my coach and try to keep in mind doing it just like that. We re getting closer. I can t do this,
guys. Oh my God! I groan. I m gonna dieee. At this point I m almost panicking and we re getting
even closer. I hear multiple encouragements from my team but they don t do much to calm my
nerves. My palms are getting sweaty and my brain is going crazy with thoughts of how badly this
could end. We finally get to the other team and we greet them with the usual Hey ladies! I scan the
faces of the other girls with their smiles probably just as fake as

Darwin s Theory Of Descent
Darwin s theory of descent with modification brought about a new revolution in scientific thought.
He developed this theory independently after his around the world voyage aboard the Beagle
observing the flora and fauna of various parts of the world (Bowler, 2009, p.149). Darwin could
not have developed his theory without working on novel concepts derived from his own
observation or, equally so, from learning of the concepts of other prominent scientists of his time.
Before Darwin went on his voyage aboard the Beagle, he, like many others, was captivated by the
accounts of Alexander Von Humboldt s journey to South America. Humboldt was a natural
romantic who was captivated by the beauty and complexity of nature and the stories of his
fantastical journey instilled those same beliefs into a young Charles Darwin (Bowler, 2009, p.120).
It was Humboldt s tales that made Darwin want to go on his own journey to faraway lands and
join Fitzroy on the Beagle (Bowler, 2009, p.149).
On Darwin s exhibition, he brought with him Principles of Geography by Charles Lyell which
discussed the idea of uniformitarianism (Bowler, 2009, p.150). This idea is in regards to how
geography has been shaped relying on the concept of slow mechanisms of change. These
mechanisms are the same mechanisms we see at work today and they have been working at a
uniform rate throughout history. Darwin came to accept this theory after witnessing how an
earthquake raised a coastline in Chile, coming to the

The Growth Of The Human Population
The indefinite growth of the human population, has monumental impacts on the natural
environment, not only in the UK, but around the globe. Architecturally, the entire process of
designing and constructing a building, both domestic and not, can lead to the rapid exhaustion of
natural resources across the planet. Buildingwith environmental design strategies in mind not only
combats the impact we as humans have on the natural environment, but also has considerable
economic benefits, due to lower running costs of buildings and advanced occupant productivity.
There are also many social benefits, such as improved air quality which resultantly leads too
enhanced health of a buildings occupants.
The first section of my report touches two case study buildings that considers such matters in an
intimate way, the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre in Yorkshire, and the Heels Building, National Trust
Headquarters, located in Swindon. The second section of the report focuses on a personal
statement, giving my opinions on both buildings environmental sustainability and overall impact.
Case Study 1 Dalby Forest Visitor Centre: Firstly I investigated the Dalby Visitor Centre by White

one of the first visitor centres the Forestry Commission have funded with environmental viability as
its core target. The Forestry Commission wanted a building that touched the ground lightly .

The Effects Of Diabetes Melllitus
Diabetes mellitus being a metabolic disorder shows a variety of characteristic biochemical
parameters in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Rats induced with diabetes mellitus by a single intra
peritoneal injection of 120 mg/kg of alloxan showed a significant increase in the blood glucose
level, serum urea, creatinine and uric acid; marked elevation in serum Aspartate aminotransferase
(AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The serum bilirubin,
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT), Malonaldehyde (MDA), Total
cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL and VLDL were increased. There was a decrease in the serum
HDL, total protein, albumin, and reduced glutathione (GSH) compared to those of control rats....

Metformin restores increased blood glucose to normal levels in alloxan induced rats without
causing life threatening hypoglycemia. It reduces the blood glucose by inhibiting hepatic
gluconeogenesis and increases insulin stimulated glucose uptake by skeletal muscle and adipose
tissues. It inhibits alpha glucosidase and there by retards absorption of disaccharidases from the
intestine by enhancing the activity of AMP activated protein kinase (Chaturvedi, 2010; Nkambo et
al, 2013). In the present study, fenugreek was found to have a more potent action than that of
metformin.
The urea, uric acid and creatinine levels were significantly higher in the diabetic rats compared to
those of control rats. This is because of the increased utilization of protein as a consequence of
impaired carbohydrate metabolism due to hypoinsulinemia (Finco, 1984). The serum urea, uric
acid and creatinine levels showed a decreasing trend in Wistar rats treated with 400 mg/kg of
fenugreek. When treated with 800 mg/kg of fenugreek the above three parameters showed a
marked decrease attaining a near to normal value when compared to that of the control rats (Khalid
et al, 2010). This indicates the increased peripheral utilization of glucose preferential to protein
with a high dose of fenugreek. When treated with metformin there was a reduction in the levels of
serum urea, uric acid and creatinine in diabetic rats. These results are similar to that of a previous
study in which

Louisiana Creole Culture

Diversity of Louisiana Creole Culture Louisiana Creoles are persons descended from the
inhabitants of colonial Louisiana during the period of both French and Spanish rule. These
imposed meanings varied from descendants of French and Spanish aristocrats to racially mixed or
to anyone of African blood. In the Louisiana Creole mind those distinctions are irrelevant. They
contradict and hide the essential nature of this vanishing, alternative culture. Their diversity is well

countries, and ethnic groups. The diversity of this culture is well pronounced throughout the

The religion of Louisiana Creole Culture depends on the history of an individual s family.
Catholicism is the typical religious choice. The Creole Catholic is a sub culture within itself. There
are some Louisiana Creoles who follow the Protestant religion. Many of families share beliefs of a
tribal nature stemming from African tribes, Celtic nations, and Native Americans.
The food of the Louisiana Creole represents the diversity of the culture. The traditional creole
gumbo is like a parade of flavors. The filГ© powder is made of ground, Native American
sassafras leaves. The paprika, a Mexican spice exported to Spain in the 1600s, is combined with
black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt. The ingredients of the gumbo provide more understanding

Executive Summary
This report provides analysis and evaluation of a newly designed wastewater treatment facility for
Sand Valley, Nevada. Analysis will include Biological OxygenDemand (BOD) along with total,
volatile, and fixed suspended solids. Methods for analysis will include the Winkler Test for BOD
and a Hatch test for the suspend solids.
The report finds BOD levels meet the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
permit renewal standards. Results for suspended solids shows an opposite trend. Suspended solids
increase throughout the course of the water treatment. This does not meet NPDES standards.
Further suspended solids test will be needed to insure a minimal amount of error. If the same trend
continues, the facility may need to be redesigned to meet NPDES standards.

The Business Internet. The Internet Is Constantly Developing.
The Business Internet
The Internet is constantly developing. From four computers back in the early 70 s to an
uncountable number today, the Internet has extreme power and has changed the world. In recent
years, Internet growth has been expanding more rapidly than the government can understand. The
laws and regulations of a month ago are no longer useful today. The government either has to move
quicker in deciding outcomes pertaining to the Internet or has to give up control entirely. Businesses
are making large technological advances that involve the Internet and are being held up by
government decisions. Commercialization of the Internet brings in new technologies that are
essential to growth.

Their savior was found in the ARPAnet, which now encompassed ALOHAnet and SATnet. The
military and the ARPAnet, however, did not agree with what type of protocol to use. Instead of
them sitting down and figuring out which protocol to use, the military forced ARPAnet to change
and to use the IP protocol (Abbate 133 134).
All of these developments in the field of computing continued to grow. As the Personal Computer
was born, regular old people started to find the Internet useful to them. Online services such as
America Online, Prodigy, and CompuServe started to control Internet services to the home user
(Abbate 203). As Internet needs continued to grow, more ISPs, Internet Service Providers, popped
up. Currently there are a countless number of ISPs, but people want more (Brown 2).
In order to meet these needs, different types of Internet services were born. Some services,
called Bulletin Board Services, are not directly connected to the Internet. These servers are just
local computers in the area that just require a phone call in order to be used. Ways to use
Bulletin Board Services are endless as long as the software on the server supports it. Typically
they are just used to transfer small files and to use Internet e mail while the user is not directly
connected. Generally, these are free services, but the better ones can

the exception of a few indie related genres such as emo,[1] Alternative R B, and electronic
subgenres like Liquid funk and UK funky. Convergence of different styles was one of the more
defining features of the decade, as seen with the creation and commercial success of the British

Nevertheless, distinguishable elements can be attributed to the decade from a musical point of
view, such as the common and mainstream usage of pitch correction software Auto Tune, as well
as the rise of the internet, media player programmes such as iTunes and music and video sharing

pieces that surrounded them. Curator Christopher Willey said that we should use the word
experience instead of look when referring to art pieces. Because, we are doing far more with our
bodies than simply looking. This is an important lesson, because when you do experience and not

Ok maybe not that far apart, but that s the feeling the viewer gets when looking at their pieces.
There s also different experiences from each that are widely different. For Cochran the viewer
needs to think deeper and further than they re used too. Which isn t necessarily a bad thing, it s
just that it s somewhat unnerving. Why? You say could because the viewer is truly getting an
understanding of the pieces. In that feelings are being brought out because of a piece, feelings
that the viewer had no idea art could bring out. Now if we were to relate this to Durkin s pieces
they are worlds apart . Overwhelming joy, is simply all the viewer can feel from her pieces. The
viewer is caught off guard and can only smile no matter how much it hurts. These two artists make
the viewer have practically two different experiences, ultimately depends on the viewer. But never

Reflection On Breaking The Elevator Norm
On Monday, October 16, 2017, around 1:00 o clock 2:00 o clock PM, my partner, Shantelle, and
I broke the elevator norm. Our setting took place at Miami Beach Community Health Center
North (Address: 11645 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33181) and the number of observers was about
twenty. The observers aged between 20 plus through 70 plus, we had observers from a pregnant
womanto an old man in a wheelchair, and from nurses to a security guard. Most of our spectators
were women and few were men, and race of the observers was among Hispanics and African
Americans, if I m not mistaken, I think there was an Indian/Bangladeshi woman. I think most of
the observers are middle class and most of the observers mood was nervous and quite because
they were waiting for a checkup or since it was a hospital. When my partner and I arrived at the
health center, I was nervous since I don t know how other people would react when I am facing
them in the elevator. On the first try, I did not say anything, nor I look at them because I got
nervous. When the time arrived for actually breaking the norm, I was scared since I don t know
what the other person s reaction would be. As I am facing the people on the elevator, I started to
see the awkward look coming from the people and I was feeling uncomfortable. There were some
people who would just look at their phone or look the other way as I make eye contact with them.
The reason I felt uncomfortable because no one usually make eye contact inside the

Research Assistant Application Essay
I am writing to outline my knowledge and experience, that I believe make me the ideal candidate
for the role of Research Assistant in the evaluation of the swim with humpback whale trial. I am
truly passionate about wildlife science and ensuring the health of the marine ecosystem. I find this
research project particularly exciting, as I have always had an interest in human wildlife
interactions, and as a keen traveller, I love to learn about effective ecotourism. When researching in
Cancun, and recently travelling in the Philippines, I have noticed wildlife tours, such as swimming
with whalesharks are lacking control of tourist numbers and amount of interaction, the type of
issues that would need to be addressed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. I think my travel
experience would be a useful asset to the research team.

from local resorts would visit the marine centre regularly, where I conducted the introduction speech

Bennett 1932 Problem Analysis
The tension between the public and governing institutions was made worse by the fact that the
failure of government to mitigate the hardships of the Great Depression was not only perceived
nationally, but also felt personally: a growing number of Canadians found, much to their dismay,
that many decisions made by the state were not benefitting them. In fact, some were doing great
harm and, in the process, eroding the relationship between them and their government. An
important example of this kind of problem was Bennett s 1932 decision to create a series of
remote work camps for single, unemployed young men (Fielding, 127) a move that drew a great
deal of criticism, especially within the context of Bennett s failure to provide more lasting... Show

As a result of failure on all levels of government to provide relief to the desperate masses, Canadians
grew to see many established political institutions as out of touch and ineffective. By the thousands,
they expressed their frustrations and sought out new, often radical, solutions to the many problems
of the era. The leaders of Canada s two traditional federal parties, the Liberals and Conservatives,
were unable to forestall the economic catastrophe, and, perhaps more significantly, failed to
convince many Canadians that traditional policies would ultimately provide solutions. As a result,
the government faced a growing sense of antipathy as their actions repeatedly demonstrated an
inability to meet the real needs of those most affected. This mounting tension gave rise to new
political parties across the country that presented voters with new ideas and attractive new solutions
that so many had lost faith in the government to provide. Finally, the degree to which Canadians felt
the need to escape the harsh reality was evidenced by the increase in popularity of escapist
entertainment in the 1930s. Despite the wide variety of ideas presented and promoted by various
groups in the effort to end the Great Depression, the Canadian economy did not fully recover from
the trauma until the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. In the end, it

U.s. Federal Department Of Homeland Security
The idea of the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security evolved into the biggest
U.S. government reorganization in American history. Prior to the establishment of the Department,
Americans increasingly became concerned about terrorism on our soil. This concern was triggered
by the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 as well as the
discovery of a bomb at the Atlanta Olympics in 1994. Additionally, it became more apparent to the
Americans that terrorism has a growing global reach. The U.S. commissions looked at different
aspects of the U.S. national security, the Hart Rudman Commission, the Gilmore Commission as

President George W. Bush, appointed Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge as the first Director of the
Office of Homeland Security in the White House. The office duties are to oversee and coordinate a
comprehensive national strategy to safeguard the country against terrorism and respond to any
future attacks. On November 2002, Congress passed the Homeland Security Act and the
Department of Homeland Security became a stand alone, Cabinet level department. The department
s vision is to coordinate and unify national homeland security efforts. The creation of the
department forms the most substantial reorganization of the federal government agencies since the
National Security Acts of 1947. Ultimately this placed military departments under a secretary of

length of 850 mines and carried approximately 95,000 barrels per day from Patoka, IL to

Prostate Cancer and PSA Testing Essay
Introduction
Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer affecting men and the second leading cause of
cancer death among American men (Qaseem, Denberg, Owens, Shekelle, 2013). Medical
professionals have been using prostate specific antigen (PSA) screenings along with digital rectal
exam (DRE) for many years to screen for prostate cancer. PSA was first identified in 1966 in semen,
followed by the identification of PSA in blood in 1979. The PSA test has been approved for use
since 1994 to detect early prostate cancer. Most men that are greater than 50 years of age in the
U.S. have had PSA screening, and many have been tested repeatedly. DRE is performed to

A grade D recommendation means that the USPSTF concluded there is at least moderate
certainty that the harms of doing the intervention equal or outweigh the benefits in the target
population. This recommendation also advises against a DRE because the risk of mortality and
morbidity outweigh survival benefit as results revealed the risk of dying of screening is greater
than prior to screening. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF, 2012) now advises
against PSA based screening tests for men of all ages of the risks of over diagnosis and treatment,
which have resulted in many adverse effects, serious complications, and even death.
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on pros and cons of PSA testing, and to review current
guidelines from well respected authorities. The European Randomized Study of Screening for PCa
(ERSPC) showed a 20% reduction in PCa specific mortality (Moyer, 2012). However, the prostate
arm of the Prostate Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial in the United
States did not demonstrate a mortality reduction of men randomly screened by PSA testing (Moyer,
2012). In addition, PCa treatment has many serious or potentially life threatening adverse effects.
As a result, choosing an optimal treatment for localized PCa is difficult and controversial.

Note. From U.S. Electoral College 2000 Presidential Election. Delegate selection for the
Electoral College happens in a variety of ways. Each state decides how it selects its electors.
Currently, every state allows its electors to be chosen by popular vote. The political party
usually nominates electors at their state conventions or by a vote of the party s central
committee. Political parties select electors to recognize their service and dedication. These
electors are state elected officials, party leaders, or people with a personal or political affiliation
with a candidate. Some states show the electors names on the ballot others do not. Voters should
research the process of selecting electors in their state and for their political party. Voters should
inform themselves on what their ballot format is before National Election Day. When we vote
for a pair of candidates on a ticket, we are selecting a group of electors to serve in the Electoral
College. There are many controversial arguments regarding the Electoral College. After the
controversy of the 2000 election, people across the country wanted to do away with the Electoral

The Invention Of Our Modern Day Fracking
Yes! Greater independence from foreign oil would be a positive, and yes, cleaner air is good for
your health, and most certainly, everyone loves lower gas prices. According to a spokesman
from Pinnacle, a Halliburton service company, In the more than 60 years following those first
treatments, more than two million fracturing treatments have been pumped with not one
documented case of any treatment polluting an aquifer not one. ( Shooters A Fracking History ).
This statement may lead you to believe there is no need for concern, but there is a big pink
elephant in the room. Arguments against these statements would prove futile, at a first glance,
but understanding the true cost, to the environment and our safety could prove more valuable
than the money earned. The beginnings of our modern day fracking process reside in a U.S.
Patent No. 59,936, issued to a Col. Edward Roberts, in November of 1866, during the civil war.
Robert s idea, dubbed Exploding Torpedo , involved dropping artillery rounds down a well, filling
it with water, to concentrate the concussion, thereby fracturing the surrounding rock, allowing for
greater access to the gas or oil below. (Hicks, See an Exploding Torpedo ). This process has
improved greatly and the Environmental Protection Agency now refers to hydraulic fracking as the
entire process, from the gathering of water used until waste disposal. What was once thought to be
cost prohibitive is now more cost effective than ever. Once

The Contributions Of Louis Pasteur
Louis Pasteur was a biologist and a French chemist who made major contributions to chemistry,

Personal Biography
Louis Pasteur born on December 27, 1822, in Dole, France. He grew up in the town of Arbois.
His father, Jean Joseph Pasteur was a tanner and a sergeant major. Since his father was decorated
with the Legion of Honor during the Napoleonic Wars, strong patriotism was instilled in Louis

The other children died of typhoid. But it was this tragedy of losing his children that inspired
Louis Pasteur to try to discover cures for diseases like the typhoid. He was affected very deeply
over his loss and that is what gave him the inspiration to do something for incurable diseases.
Scientific Biography
In 1854 he was a chemistry professor at the university of Lille, and it was here where he started
working with the germ theory. Although he did not invent the germ theory, he was able to further
develop it by demonstrating that bacteria was responsible for souring wine, beer and milk.
People in those days believed that germs just popped out of nowhere but Pasteur proved
otherwise. Through his experiments he showed that bacteria did not just appear but it came from
other living things. It was this that earned him the nickname Father of the Germ Theory. Using his
knowledge of germs he went on to invent pasteurization. He found that boiling and then cooling
liquid could remove bacteria. Not only will this kill all the bacteria making the beverages safer to
drink, it also made them last longer. Pasteur kept learning about bacteria and he started to think that
it had something to do with why humans get diseases. In 1865, Louis Pasteur helped save the silk
industry. He investigated why silkworms were getting a disease, which was threatening the French
silk market. He proved that microbes were attacking the healthy silkworm eggs and he said if the

Loan Portfolio Management
Loan Portfolio Management
Introduction
Background:
L ending is the principal business activity for most commercial banks. The loan portfolio is
typically the largest asset and the predominate source of revenue. As such, it is one of the greatest
sources of risk to a bank s safety and soundness. Whether due to lax credit standards, poor portfolio
risk management, or weakness in the economy, loan portfolio problems have historically been the
major cause of bank losses and failures.
Effective management of the loan portfolio and the credit function is fundamental to a bank s
safety and soundness. Loan portfolio management (LPM) is the process by which risks that are
inherent in the credit process are managed and controlled. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

An unregulated banking financial institution might be fraud with unmanageable risks for the
purpose of maximizing its potential return. In such a situation, the banking financial institutions
might find itself in a serious financial distress instead of improving its financial health.
Consequently, not only the depositors but also the shareholders will be deprived of getting back
their money from the bank. The deterioration of loan quality also affects the intermediative
efficiency of the financial institutions and thus the economic growth process of the country. This
the reason for which the banking financial institutions are being regulated in all countries. The
banking financial institutions are also the most regulated among all types of financial institutions in
all countries, because of their substantial role in payment mechanism (in addition to protect the loan
portfolio from decaying).
Portfolio management is crucial for commercial banks, be it in developed or developing
countries. Mere accumulation of deposits gives rise to entries both in liabilities and assets sides
of the balance sheets. So, portfolio management involves in both liability and assets of
commercial banks. If deposits of a bank grow at a steady rate and if loan demands can be met
from deposit growth, the bank will have no problem of liquidity. In real life, deposits do not grow
steadily all the time, nor does loan demand grow in keeping with growth in deposits.

Despite him going through a dynamic character change throughout the course of novel, Darcy s
prideful personality can still be seen even after he has become a loveable person. In one of the
conversations between Darcy and Elizabeth, he tells her, ...I admire and love you. Elizabeth
describes his actions as, ...his sense of inferiority of its being a degradation of the family
obstacles. Darcy proclaims his love for Elizabeth and does not allow her to forget her inferior
ranking within society. He seems to have a personal conflict within himself, he does not want to
love her but he is unable to not love her. Elizabeth does not take this proposal too seriously
because she believes she could never love a man that does not care for her family. She can see
how his vanity is not allowing him to be kind towards the woman he claims to love. Elizabeth
describes Darcy in this situation as, ...he was listening...wholly unmoved with remorse.
Elizabeth knew he was listening but could not see an ounce of regret or forgiveness for his
hurtful actions towards both her sister Jane and his friend Bingley. Darcy s behavior
demonstrates to Elizabeth that he is a man that she could not and shall not love because he is
willfully blinded by his pride. Darcy cannot move beyond his pride and vanity to see the pain he
has caused and how this is stopping Elizabeth from falling in love with him. He clearly told her
about how he meddled between Jane and Bingley by saying, I have no wishes of denying that I
did everything in my power to separate my friend from your sister, or that I rejoice in my
success, he does admit he acted wrong but there is no asking for forgiveness and that shows
Elizabeth the kind of man he is. Elizabeth comes to the realization that she does not want to spend
her life with the man that hurt her family and jeopardized her sister s chance at happiness. Darcy is

consumption and national income. It can be calculated with a formula: AE = C + I + G + NX. In
this formula, the C stands for household consumption, the I stands for investment expenditure, the
G stands for government expenditure and the NX stands for net export expenditure. The change of
these components will eventually affect real GPD. The expenditure approach is important because
it can tell the government of consumers demand so that the government can better allocate
resources. It can also convey the economic situation signals to the central bank to help them to carry
out macroeconomic regulation and control. The figure 1 below shows the aggregate expenditure

Nietzsche Said Whoever Fights Monsters Should See To It
Nietzsche said Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become
a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you (Beyond Good
and Evil, 146). Most people are convinced that they are the hero or heroine of a story, but if their
motives are impure, selfish, or short sighted; they may very well turn out to be the villain. In the
classic gothic novel, The Monkby Matthew Lewis in which several characters motives, lives, and
deaths become intertwined. Ambrosio s character proves that no person is incorruptible, while the
film directed by Dominik Moll tries to add redemption to the character s monstrous acts.
In the eighteen hundreds, when The Monk was first published it was seen as ... Show more content

Though neither meant to do harm, they both chose a life of sin and murder (Red Riding Hood s

still gives herself, seemingly happily, to the wolf with little thoughts of anyone else, but herself,
displaying her vanity, corresponding to Ambrosio s egotism with his audience and peers thoughts of
him (Carter 110).
The pious and godly man that was Ambrosio tries to make excuses for his behavior and pawns
his guilt and judgement onto others. Soon every thought Ambrosio has is not that of a pious
man, working for his Lord, but that of a man growing increasingly impatient for his wants;
Antonia a young and innocent girl is the first on his list. Accordingly, he faults Elvira for
requiring him to sneak into Antonia s room to defile her, as Elvira has banished him from her
home, for his mistreatment of her daughter, Antonia. Therefore, Dr. Jekyll and Ambrosio have
very similar ideals about morality. Both seem to think that if no one perceives them as the guilty
party, they are free to do as they please, while keeping their consciences clean. Ambrose uses
magic to sneak around to defile Antonia secretly and Dr. Jekyll uses science to create an alternate
persona to do as he wishes (Stevenson 86). Consequently, he blames Matilda for their dealings in
witchcraft, deciding since she is the one who is doing the magic; he is blameless in the

What Is The Conspiracy Of Roswell
The Conspiracy of Roswell Conspiracy theories are quite a talk among people. From UFO
landings to the questioning of our government and other governments around the world. One of
the many popular conspiracy theories that many talk about is the UFO incident of Roswell. To
this day people embrace the UFO theory, and still visit the crash site each year. The events of
Roswell still leave numerous questions unanswered; questions like: What exactly happened there?
, What is Project Mogul? , and Why did the public get so worked up over this? First things first,
what happened at Roswell? For those who don t know in the summer of 1947 in Roswell, New

The experiments were created and tested to find ways for pilots to survive high altitudes. They were

appearances and quick retrieval people speculated that the government was hiding something that
they didn t want Roswell to know. They had thought the government, army and air force were

conducting a strategic management project
INTRODUTION: The original assignment tasks for this unit involved carrying out a management
project and producing a formal report as the final output. It is with regret that this has not been
possible due to the fact that I am not in current employment and as a result, the assignment has been
adjusted to accommodate my (and others) circumstances. Instead, I have been asked to write a
personal statement for each of the learning outcomes. This report is divided into four tasks and is a
combination of theory and personal application. To assist in my articulation of my personal
statements I have used a scenario throughout the assignment pertaining to the moving of a

decide which project to support if there is more than one option available. TASK TWO: Be able

consumers prefer long life, acid free, vine ripe, extra large, or cherry tomato s. The type and source

comparative studies into: sunlight hours, heating (boiler) council bylaws, cost of heating if there
are changes, accessibility and cost of resources and support products, cost of moving/transporting
the glasshouse, cost of non production during transition phase, actual profit (Christchurch) versus
projected profit (Nelson); Deciding which tomato s to plant in the glass house might involve:
consumer surveys or interviews, sales records from supermarkets and produce markets, cost of

Primary Overt Hypothyroidism
The patient s diagnosis is primary overt hypothyroidism. The patient presents with certain features
such as weight gain, weakness, excessively dry flaking skin, dry hair, sluggish movements,
constipation, bradycardia, diminished deep tendon reflexes, and bilateral edematous hands, which
is classical signs and symptoms for primary hypothyroidism. The patient laboratory test reveals she
has an elevation in serum thyroidstimulating hormone level along with low serum free thyroxin and
triiodthyronine levels, which indicates it is a dysfunction or abnormality in the thyroid gland as
opposed to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus (Gaitonde; Lohano; Porth, 2015, p. 780; Ross,
2014).

starting dose would be 100 micrograms per day. The patient is instructed to take the medication
once daily wither thirty minutes before eating in the morning or at bedtime or two hours post last
meal ate. The patient is advised not to take calcium or iron supplements within four hours of
taking levothyroxine because it can alter the absorption of thyroid hormone. The patient should
start feeling better within two to three weeks of starting the levothyroxine, if not she is advised
to contact the clinic for a reevaluation. The patient will have a scheduled reevaluation
appointment along with laboratory work (redraw of TSH) in six weeks. Depending on the patient

The Disney Studio s Notorious Strike
Seventeen animation artists were ushered out of Disney Studios in Burbank, California on May
28th, 1941; they were then fired for being part of the Screen Cartoonist Guild.1 Once the news
spread to the other eight hundred plus artists and four hundred plus Disney workers, many were
outraged and further gathered together to make derisive posters and stir up compelling speeches to
support of their fellow colleagues. On May 29th, 1941 three hundred employees went on strike.2
The few loyal to the Disney Corporation gathered with management in hopes to quickly put an end
to the strike, however it was just the beginning. The Disney Studio Strike was acrimonious, lasting
five weeks and ultimately shattering the benevolent image Disney Studios portrayed to the rest of
the world.3 Many people associate the Disney Corporation with a lighthearted atmosphere and Walt
Disneywith the image of an artistic mastermind; so what happened to cause his workers to
deceive him and go on strike? This paper will identify and explore the tensions that led up to the
notorious Disney Studio Strike of 1941 as well as specifically provide the causes and effects the
strike had on Disney Studios and the animation industry. The ultimate question to be answered
throughout this paper is how did this strike demonstrate different issues than what was typical of
strikes during the 1930s and early 1940s? Going forward with answering this primary question
several other, more specific questions surface. To

Nursing Practice Implications
Practice Implications
As a student, it can often be challenging to apply research findings into practice, even more so at
earlier levels of nursing programs. When involved in surgical care around appendicitis, among the
many actions which can be done, the arguably most important intervention which can be applied is
continual perioperative care (Lewis, 2014).
Frequent patient assessment can prevent a variety of complications in appendectomy patients. After
this gastrointestinal surgery with abdominal incisions, patients may have an increased risk of
contracting paralytic ileus, or peristalsis cessation (Lewis, 2014). This can result in various other
concerns arising, meaning that prevention and early intervention can greatly improve patient ...

Salminen et al. (2015) found that there was a sufficiently high success rate to warrant antibiotic
treatment for appendicitis as an option presented to the patient. Nurses should advocate for their
patients by raising awareness that antibiotic therapy has been shown to be a viable treatment for
appendicitis. Thus, should surgery be contraindicated for any reason, alternative therapy is
available to treat the condition. This includes lobbying institutions and agencies to culture the
appendix, if possible. This way, as the patient is on general antibiotics for appendicitis, more
specific medication can be available in order to administer more efficient and safe care to patients

As a first step, the professors organize students into groups of four to five people, balancing the
groups based on both academic major and performance in the class to date (including
performance on homework and the first exam), as well as to achieve diversity. The group format
is used to encourage students to learn from each other, to motivate students to consider alternative
viewpoints, to develop students understanding of group dynamics, and to limit the amount of time
required of the project for both students and the faculty who must grade it. Each professor uses a
different approach in selecting the industry and companies for analysis. One professor takes
industry suggestions from the class (with the restriction that there be sufficient companies so that
no more than two groups will have to analyze the same pair of companies), writes the suggestions
on the board, and asks students to vote for their top two choices. Then, a second vote is taken
from among the top two original suggestions, with a majority vote determining the industry to be
analyzed. Finally, groups have one week to send the professor an email proposing two companies
to analyze, with first responders being given preference, so that no more than two groups analyze
the same pair. 85 Misch and Galantine 86 The other professor announces group assignments near
the end of a class session, then allows groups

The s Theory Of Scapegoating
Currently, Black Lives Matter victims are struggling with the loss of children, relatives, and close
friends due to an illogical order in society. The guilty are set free, while the innocent are accused of
putting themselves in unfriendly situations, therefore making them a byproduct of their demise. In
order to completely understand how innocent people are being killed and murderers are getting
away free, I uncovered the truth behind scapegoating. This unfair societal issue is a problem,
nonetheless, a careless standard of pledging guilt on the ones who are rightfully innocent. In my
essay I argue, by utilizing Burke s theory of scapegoating in the Tamir Rice shooting, I understand
how law and society constructs who receives guilt and who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A scapegoat must have two qualities. First, it must be anecdotal; meaning it must be representative
of certain unwanted evils. Burke describes these unwanted evils as guilt from historical and cultural
identifications. In my understanding, historical and cultural identifications can be seen in modern
day situations such as Tamir s. These identifications are the negative associations which African
American stereotypes have created throughout time. An article written by Kenneth W. Goings in
February 1990, states the idea of these stereotypes, saying, These objects produced from the late
17th century to the present, have been almost universally derogatory, with exaggerated racial
features that helped prove that African Americans were different and inferior. (Goings, Kenneth.)
Historical and culturally, these stereotypes say things such as African Americans look suspicious
based of apparel, facial expressions, or physical intimidation therefore making it reasonable for
officers to become suspicious. These stereotypes and identification issues make the scapegoats
guilt easily understood by society and law courts that decide cases such as Tamir Rice s. Burke s
second point states that a scapegoat needs to be powerful because it must be at least equal to the
burden of guilt, so that the sacrifice destroys a vessel strong enough to hold the transgression. Burke
notes that the scapegoat must be worthy legalistically,

Bloody Mary Short Story
Bloody Mary
I was having some friends over on Friday night. Friday the thirteenth of october to be exact. Me
and my four best friends. It was Erick, Jeff, Brady, and Trevor. We made food and watched
movies and talked where we were going hunting tomorrow. By midnight, we d run out of things
to do. We were so bored. Let s try that Bloody Mary thing, Trevor said. Erick, was sitting crossed
legged on his sleeping bag, said, What s the Bloody Mary thing? Brady, who was laying on top of
his own sleeping bag on the far side of the room, said: Come on, Erick. everyone knows the Bloody
Mary thing! You stand in front of the bathroom mirrorwith a lighted candle and say the Mary s
name three times. Then her ghost appears, looking just the way she did when she died; all horrible
and bloody with scars all over her face! . She sounds gorgeous. Just why, exactly, do you think I
would want to see the ghost of Bloody Mary? Erick asked. Why not? I said from my spot on the air
mattress in the living room. I ve always wanted to see a ghost! It could be fun. Besides, I ve heard
she can tell your future if you summon her correctly. And if you don t summon her correctly, or if
she s in a bad mood, the ghost of Bloody Mary will rip your eyes out and leave your face horribly
scarred, Jeff said dramatically. Or you will be found dead with claw marks all over your face and
body. Or you could be trapped in the mirror with Bloody Mary for eternity, Trevor

The Collapse of Barings Bank This story begins with a former back office clerk being promoted to a derivatives trader for Barings Bank s Singapore Branch and ends with the collapse of a 232 year old banking empire. As we began researching this assignment, we all asked the same question, How does a 28 year old trader bring about the collapse of a 232 year old banking empire? To understand how this debacle came about, one must have a basic understanding of the nature of a derivative and what they are designed to do. Initially, derivatives were designed to provide an investor/trader with a type of insurance against unexpected movements in prices which could devastate an investment portfolio. These derivatives take the form of futures and options: A future is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Internal problem #3 Failure to act upon relevant information In many instances, Barings senior management were notified of potential problems arising from the activities of Nick Leeson. Had senior management acted upon all of the information available to them, the collapse of Barings Bank could have been averted. Internal problem #4 Failure to understand the transactions and the risks they entailed. Senior management was under the impression that the investments Leeson was involved in were virtually riskless. Due to the fact that Leeson s trading activities contributed significantly to the bank s profitability, senior management seemed blissfully unaware of the risks Leeson s activities posed to the health of the institution. Few in the organization questioned how such riskless investments were able to generate such tremendous profits. • 3. A Research Study On An Academic Research Essay 1.0 Introduction An academic research involves a comprehensive investigation of theories, principles and decisions criteria among other study materials with an aim of identifying facts and drawing conclusions. Ultimately, there are lots of benefits associated with research in learning as well as in solving real life problems. For instance, it allows for knowledge building through evaluation of existing theories (Webb, 2007). In this case, the researcher is exposed to research work conducted earlier and the methodologies that were applied in various cases. As such, research improves knowledge of the participants. Additionally, research is important in sieving the lies and identifying the facts in a certain frontier of knowledge. Consequently, this is important in improving theories and making them more applicable to routine and strategic tasks at both personal and organisational levels. Furthermore, research is a lifetime opportunity to young scholars that are interested in pursuing research work as full time careers. In particular, it provides knowledge and background principles that will be used in future analysis. It is important to note that there are research objectives; as such, it ensures that certain goals are met at the end of the activity. Therefore, this paper will entail research on the Perfect Competition Theory to determine its validity and reliability in market analysis. • 4. Joy Luck Club Meaning The song Keep Me in Your Heart , as sung by Warren Zevon, would add so much to the scene in The Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan 1), as it matches perfectly with the depressing, morbid mood the scene is trying to portray, and also because it sheds some light into the motive of Suyuan s actions through its poetic and thoughtful lyrics. This song was picked first because I believe it would perfectly introduce the reader/audience to the book and allow them to connect with more than just the text. Firstly, the song portrays emotions of longing and broken heartedness through its sad and slow tempo and its depressingly perfect lyrics. • 5. Anatomy Of The Knee Injuries Movement from the lower extremities of the human body depends on the strength, agility and flexibility of the knee. Bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments and tendons assist with the knee getting the job done (NIH, n.d.). While supporting the body to walk, run and jump, the knee is at risk for enduring a torn anterior cruciate ligament(ACL). This type of injury can pose a threat to athletes and their careers. When the ACL is torn, the body will lose stability and the inability to bear the weight of the athlete. Sports competitors are vulnerable to enduring a torn ACL injury during their sports career due to the roughness when playing sports, female athletes having a higher risk, it is rated number one as the most common sports injury.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sports that are more inclined to suffer ACL tears include soccer, basketball, football and tennis (Souryal, n.d.). The University of California, San Francisco reveals that the ACL injury has an annual incidence of more than 200,000 cases with ~100,000 of these knees reconstructed annually (Kim, 2009). The vulnerability of a torn ACL in athletes is 1,000 to one (Souryal, n.d.). ////////////// //////////////// The ACL is the primary ligament which is considered as the stabilizer. The ACL is just one of four major ligaments of the joints within the knees (Kim, 2009). The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) make up the other three ligaments that supports the knee joints. Signs and symptoms of a torn a torn ACL include swelling of the knee, pain that is intensified when the weight of the body is placed on it. The inability to bend the knee is another sign of a torn ACL due to the bleeding inside the joint (MedicineNet, n.d.). Methods to diagnosis a torn ACL injury includes Lachman Test Passive accessory movement that is used to assess both the single and sagittal plane instability (Physiopedia, n.d.). The article written by Javier Cuenca Esteban, The British balance of payments, 1772 1820: India transfers and war finance focuses on the British ability to finance the wars with Napoleonic France. Esteban challenges the academic state of debate regarding the importance of exports on British Industrialization by pointing out that he believes without the exports from India, Britain would have struggled to finance her wars with France and may have never become the incubator of Industrialization. His argument comes back to the numbers he presents projecting the gap between foreign indebtedness actual and counterfactual would increase from 1802 to 1815 by over ninety million British pound sterling. The significant increase in debt was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Esteban sets the value of his calculations by creating an average of pre existing calculations for the earliest time frame of 1772 1775 of net British debts. He relies mainly on figures derived from Walter Nash and Albert H. Imlah, both of which are Economic British Historians. The author then begins to advance each line according to their own specific histories. For instance he takes into account the raise of tariffs on certain products such as tobacco that would affect the quantity of illegal imports, thus affecting the real credit value. The author also goes into great detail to compensate for the stated inaccuracies of some numbers, by showing how numbers counter balance one another to give an accurate final account of net credits. In the appendix he goes into great depth to explain each category as well as giving a price evidence for numerous specific commodities traded between Britain and India during this time period. Esteban concludes with acknowledging the weaker values for some of the credits. He makes it clear the entire process of the time period moving from mercantilism to industrialization within the time frame and the wars with France created extremely complex range of scenarios to explain the balance of payments. He points out research in the areas of wealthy immigrants transfers and net incomes, as well as capital flow from the British West Indies remain particularly difficult to quantify. This gap in ... • 9. Darwin s Theory Of Descent Darwin s theory of descent with modification brought about a new revolution in scientific thought. He developed this theory independently after his around the world voyage aboard the Beagle observing the flora and fauna of various parts of the world (Bowler, 2009, p.149). Darwin could not have developed his theory without working on novel concepts derived from his own observation or, equally so, from learning of the concepts of other prominent scientists of his time. Before Darwin went on his voyage aboard the Beagle, he, like many others, was captivated by the accounts of Alexander Von Humboldt s journey to South America. Humboldt was a natural romantic who was captivated by the beauty and complexity of nature and the stories of his fantastical journey instilled those same beliefs into a young Charles Darwin (Bowler, 2009, p.120). It was Humboldt s tales that made Darwin want to go on his own journey to faraway lands and join Fitzroy on the Beagle (Bowler, 2009, p.149). On Darwin s exhibition, he brought with him Principles of Geography by Charles Lyell which discussed the idea of uniformitarianism (Bowler, 2009, p.150). This idea is in regards to how geography has been shaped relying on the concept of slow mechanisms of change. These mechanisms are the same mechanisms we see at work today and they have been working at a uniform rate throughout history. Metformin restores increased blood glucose to normal levels in alloxan induced rats without causing life threatening hypoglycemia. It reduces the blood glucose by inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis and increases insulin stimulated glucose uptake by skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. It inhibits alpha glucosidase and there by retards absorption of disaccharidases from the intestine by enhancing the activity of AMP activated protein kinase (Chaturvedi, 2010; Nkambo et al, 2013). In the present study, fenugreek was found to have a more potent action than that of metformin. The urea, uric acid and creatinine levels were significantly higher in the diabetic rats compared to those of control rats. This is because of the increased utilization of protein as a consequence of impaired carbohydrate metabolism due to hypoinsulinemia (Finco, 1984). The serum urea, uric acid and creatinine levels showed a decreasing trend in Wistar rats treated with 400 mg/kg of fenugreek. When treated with 800 mg/kg of fenugreek the above three parameters showed a marked decrease attaining a near to normal value when compared to that of the control rats (Khalid et al, 2010). This indicates the increased peripheral utilization of glucose preferential to protein with a high dose of fenugreek. When treated with metformin there was a reduction in the levels of serum urea, uric acid and creatinine in diabetic rats. These results are similar to that of a previous study in which ... In fact, some were doing great harm and, in the process, eroding the relationship between them and their government. By the thousands, they expressed their frustrations and sought out new, often radical, solutions to the many problems of the era. The leaders of Canada s two traditional federal parties, the Liberals and Conservatives, were unable to forestall the economic catastrophe, and, perhaps more significantly, failed to convince many Canadians that traditional policies would ultimately provide solutions. As a result, the government faced a growing sense of antipathy as their actions repeatedly demonstrated an inability to meet the real needs of those most affected. This mounting tension gave rise to new political parties across the country that presented voters with new ideas and attractive new solutions that so many had lost faith in the government to provide. Prostate Cancer and PSA Testing Essay Introduction Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer affecting men and the second leading cause of cancer death among American men (Qaseem, Denberg, Owens, Shekelle, 2013). Medical professionals have been using prostate specific antigen (PSA) screenings along with digital rectal exam (DRE) for many years to screen for prostate cancer. PSA was first identified in 1966 in semen, followed by the identification of PSA in blood in 1979. The PSA test has been approved for use since 1994 to detect early prostate cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF, 2012) now advises against PSA based screening tests for men of all ages of the risks of over diagnosis and treatment, which have resulted in many adverse effects, serious complications, and even death. However, the prostate arm of the Prostate Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial in the United States did not demonstrate a mortality reduction of men randomly screened by PSA testing (Moyer, 2012). According to a spokesman from Pinnacle, a Halliburton service company, In the more than 60 years following those first treatments, more than two million fracturing treatments have been pumped with not one documented case of any treatment polluting an aquifer not one. The beginnings of our modern day fracking process reside in a U.S. Patent No. 59,936, issued to a Col. Edward Roberts, in November of 1866, during the civil war. Although he did not invent the germ theory, he was able to further develop it by demonstrating that bacteria was responsible for souring wine, beer and milk. People in those days believed that germs just popped out of nowhere but Pasteur proved otherwise. Through his experiments he showed that bacteria did not just appear but it came from other living things. It was this that earned him the nickname Father of the Germ Theory. Using his knowledge of germs he went on to invent pasteurization. He found that boiling and then cooling liquid could remove bacteria. Not only will this kill all the bacteria making the beverages safer to drink, it also made them last longer. Pasteur kept learning about bacteria and he started to think that it had something to do with why humans get diseases. In 1865, Louis Pasteur helped save the silk industry. The Disney Studio s Notorious Strike Seventeen animation artists were ushered out of Disney Studios in Burbank, California on May 28th, 1941; they were then fired for being part of the Screen Cartoonist Guild.1 Once the news spread to the other eight hundred plus artists and four hundred plus Disney workers, many were outraged and further gathered together to make derisive posters and stir up compelling speeches to support of their fellow colleagues. On May 29th, 1941 three hundred employees went on strike.2 The few loyal to the Disney Corporation gathered with management in hopes to quickly put an end to the strike, however it was just the beginning. The Disney Studio Strike was acrimonious, lasting five weeks and ultimately shattering the benevolent image Disney Studios portrayed to the rest of the world.3 Many people associate the Disney Corporation with a lighthearted atmosphere and Walt Disneywith the image of an artistic mastermind; so what happened to cause his workers to deceive him and go on strike? This paper will identify and explore the tensions that led up to the notorious Disney Studio Strike of 1941 as well as specifically provide the causes and effects the strike had on Disney Studios and the animation industry. The ultimate question to be answered throughout this paper is how did this strike demonstrate different issues than what was typical of strikes during the 1930s and early 1940s? Going forward with answering this primary question several other, more specific questions surface. To ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Nursing Practice Implications Practice Implications As a student, it can often be challenging to apply research findings into practice, even more so at earlier levels of nursing programs. When involved in surgical care around appendicitis, among the many actions which can be done, the arguably most important intervention which can be applied is continual perioperative care (Lewis, 2014). Frequent patient assessment can prevent a variety of complications in appendectomy patients. After this gastrointestinal surgery with abdominal incisions, patients may have an increased risk of contracting paralytic ileus, or peristalsis cessation (Lewis, 2014). This can result in various other concerns arising, meaning that prevention and early intervention can greatly improve patient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Salminen et al. (2015) found that there was a sufficiently high success rate to warrant antibiotic treatment for appendicitis as an option presented to the patient. Nurses should advocate for their patients by raising awareness that antibiotic therapy has been shown to be a viable treatment for appendicitis. Thus, should surgery be contraindicated for any reason, alternative therapy is available to treat the condition. This includes lobbying institutions and agencies to culture the appendix, if possible. This way, as the patient is on general antibiotics for appendicitis, more specific medication can be available in order to administer more efficient and safe care to patients with ... Misch Business Administration Division Pepperdine University Malibu, California USA Carolyn A. Galantine Business Administration Division Pepperdine University Malibu, California USA ABSTRACT This paper describes a financial statement analysis project useful in both preparerbased and user based introductory courses in financial accounting. The project requires students to analyze trends in corporate performance, to evaluate corporate financial decisions, to discuss non financial statement issues that would be important to potential investors, to compare two companies within an industry,... As a first step, the professors organize students into groups of four to five people, balancing the groups based on both academic major and performance in the class to date (including performance on homework and the first exam), as well as to achieve diversity. The group format is used to encourage students to learn from each other, to motivate students to consider alternative viewpoints, to develop students understanding of group dynamics, and to limit the amount of time required of the project for both students and the faculty who must grade it. Each professor uses a different approach in selecting the industry and companies for analysis. One professor takes industry suggestions from the class (with the restriction that there be sufficient companies so that no more than two groups will have to analyze the same pair of companies), writes the suggestions on the board, and asks students to vote for their top two choices. Then, a second vote is taken from among the top two original suggestions, with a majority vote determining the industry to be analyzed. Finally, groups have one week to send the professor an email proposing two companies to analyze, with first responders being given preference, so that no more than two groups analyze the same pair. 85 Misch and Galantine 86 The other professor announces group assignments near the end of a class session, then allows groups ... • 47. The s Theory Of Scapegoating Currently, Black Lives Matter victims are struggling with the loss of children, relatives, and close friends due to an illogical order in society. The guilty are set free, while the innocent are accused of putting themselves in unfriendly situations, therefore making them a byproduct of their demise. In order to completely understand how innocent people are being killed and murderers are getting away free, I uncovered the truth behind scapegoating. This unfair societal issue is a problem, nonetheless, a careless standard of pledging guilt on the ones who are rightfully innocent. In my essay I argue, by utilizing Burke s theory of scapegoating in the Tamir Rice shooting, I understand how law and society constructs who receives guilt and who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A scapegoat must have two qualities. First, it must be anecdotal; meaning it must be representative of certain unwanted evils. Burke describes these unwanted evils as guilt from historical and cultural identifications. In my understanding, historical and cultural identifications can be seen in modern day situations such as Tamir s. These identifications are the negative associations which African American stereotypes have created throughout time. An article written by Kenneth W. Goings in February 1990, states the idea of these stereotypes, saying, These objects produced from the late 17th century to the present, have been almost universally derogatory, with exaggerated racial features that helped prove that African Americans were different and inferior. (Goings, Kenneth.) Historical and culturally, these stereotypes say things such as African Americans look suspicious based of apparel, facial expressions, or physical intimidation therefore making it reasonable for officers to become suspicious. These stereotypes and identification issues make the scapegoats guilt easily understood by society and law courts that decide cases such as Tamir Rice s. Burke s second point states that a scapegoat needs to be powerful because it must be at least equal to the burden of guilt, so that the sacrifice destroys a vessel strong enough to hold the transgression. Burke notes that the scapegoat must be worthy legalistically, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Bloody Mary Short Story Bloody Mary I was having some friends over on Friday night. Friday the thirteenth of october to be exact. Me and my four best friends. It was Erick, Jeff, Brady, and Trevor. We made food and watched movies and talked where we were going hunting tomorrow. By midnight, we d run out of things to do. We were so bored. Let s try that Bloody Mary thing, Trevor said. Erick, was sitting crossed legged on his sleeping bag, said, What s the Bloody Mary thing? Brady, who was laying on top of his own sleeping bag on the far side of the room, said: Come on, Erick. everyone knows the Bloody Mary thing! You stand in front of the bathroom mirrorwith a lighted candle and say the Mary s name three times. Then her ghost appears, looking just the way she did when she died; all horrible and bloody with scars all over her face! . She sounds gorgeous. Just why, exactly, do you think I would want to see the ghost of Bloody Mary? Erick asked. Why not? I said from my spot on the air mattress in the living room. I ve always wanted to see a ghost! It could be fun. Besides, I ve heard she can tell your future if you summon her correctly. And if you don t summon her correctly, or if she s in a bad mood, the ghost of Bloody Mary will rip your eyes out and leave your face horribly scarred, Jeff said dramatically. Or you will be found dead with claw marks all over your face and body. Or you could be trapped in the mirror with Bloody Mary for eternity, Trevor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
