When I was about seven years old, about a week after school got out for the
summer, I burnt my entire stomach with boiling water solely because I was trying
to cook Kraft mac and cheese with the sun. If there s anything I learned from this

In 1976, I hiked a grueling 8 or so miles on the Appalachian Trail (AT) in the
mountains of North Carolina as a 13 year old boy. Almost 40 years later, I decided
to start section hiking the trail to seek solitude and a transformation of my mind,
body, and spirit. My current goal is to hike 200 miles a year on the AT. Currently, I
ve hiked 271 miles in the last 13 months. I have just over 1900 miles to go on this
2200 mile journey. I am in no rush to complete the trail and each hike teaches me
something different.
My latest hike just occurred on the weekend of the 1st of October 2016. This hike
began where I left off from my last hike, just outside the Great Smoky National Park,
as a sequentially move up the trail north toward Maine. The biggest difference on my
latest hike was that I was hiking with a friend and I typically hike alone. The weather
was perfect with highs in the low 70s and mid 40s at night with clear skies. The only
challenge was the lack of water on the trail due to drought conditions.
With proper physical and mental preparation, I was surprised when I picked my
friend up at the airport that he did not have a tent and was carrying a lot of survival
