The Ethics of Botox Essay
The Ethics of Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is short for Botulinum Type A Toxin, a protein complex produced by a bacterium called
Clostridium botulinum. Botox injection is one of the newest and among the most popular cosmetic
procedures for wrinkles. Botox works magically to smooth out facial lines by preventing the
muscles that cause frown lines from contracting. Only a tiny amount of this toxin is used in Botox
injection for beautification purposes. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery (ASAPS), more than 1.6 million people received injection in 2001, which is a 46 percent
increased from the previous year.[2]

The Freedom Of Freedom And The First Amendment Rights
Our founding fathers that is now long gone have fought for a future that they envisioned to be
free. The freedom to talk, freedom to express one self, freedom of religion and of the press and so
on. Drafted in their mind this beautiful picture that made America great, Freedom . Freedom does
not only mean one who has been set free from bondage or gained independence but the right of
many to freely express themselves peacefully without intervention of any authority. Having freedom
is like a bird having the ability to fly with the mindset that the founding fathers planted a seed that
was watered by the happiness of the people and as outlined in the 1st Amendment, Congress shall
make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble,
and to petition the government for a redress of grievances . First Amendment. LII/Legal
information institute, 5 Feb. 2010, www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendemnt. As the years
have gone by, the First Amendment rights has been questioned because many have different views
on how freedom of speech, expression, religion and the press should be protected. On Feb 24,
1968, Tinker Vs. Moines Independent community school district was a decision by the United
States Supreme Court that defined the constitutional rights of students in U.S. public schools. In

Analysis Of Jim Mccormick s Short Story Breaking Through...
The two stories Breaking through Uncertainty and Neighbours are both stories about how big the
benefits are when risks have been taken. The first short story is about how a skydiver must
overcome his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still
dramatic, just in a different tone; it s about a young woman, who must decide whether or not a
friendship is worth standing up for something that s right. The protagonists in both stories, have to
take risks, and they re both rewarded for taking those risks; one with his life, and the other with a
stronger friendship. Even though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in Neighbours had
more gut to do what she had to do, where is the skydiver just let second nature take over. Above all,
the protagonists both did experience serious risktaking moments, and they both benefited for the
greater good.
Breaking Through Uncertainty by Jim McCormick is about how a skydiver is plummeting to his
death, and he has got to figure out how to save himself. All the while the skydiver must deal with
his self doubt. In paragraph eight, we see actually how much danger the skydiver is in I looked
up to assess my canopy and saw something I don t often see; the horizon clearly visible ABOVE
the trailing edge of my canopy. The skydiver obviously now knows what the stakes are if he
messes up, which make his self doubt start to kick in. He starts to worry he s not going to do it, the

Rhetorical Analysis On La Perla
La Perla garnered negative press on Twitter after a picture was taken showing one of its
mannequins in the New York store with its ribs protruding. Twitter users were extremely frustrated
and angry with La Perla and created a hashtag implying that they were no longer going to buy La
Perla s products. After being alerted of the issue, La Perla quickly removed the mannequin from its
store and released a statement saying it would no longer use that mannequin. The article highlights
the issue of body shaming and the issue of fashion companies using stick thin mannequins to model
clothing. Many people feel that the use of these mannequins promotes an unhealthy lifestyle and an
unrealistic image for young girls, which can lead to eating disorders

Analysis Of The Grumbling Hive, By Bernard Mandeville
The renowned economist Milton Friedman once said, Innovation comes from self interest, not
government agencies. This idea, seen as controversial and offensive to many, is at the core of
Bernard Mandeville s argument in his poem, The Grumbling Hive: or, Knaves turn d Honest. The
poem compares the working of society to a busy hive. The hive is flourishing until suddenly the
bees become honest and righteous leading them to live simple lives without a thrive community.
Through this analogy, Mandeville argues that pursuit of private vices generates public
improvements and economic prosperity, meaning, individuals tendencies to pursue their own vices,
such as lust and greed to innovationfor society as a whole. This is demonstrated through the benefits
of marijuana legalization.
Mandeville addresses many aspects of degeneracy and selfishness within private life, highlighting
vice as an intrinsic and unavoidable part of . Vice, by Mandeville s standards, is an action that
fulfills the individual in some respect but is immoral, selfish, and unfair. The seven deadly sins
provide a framework for behavior that would be considered detrimental and self regarding.
Mandeville, in the poem, provides examples of such actions within all echelons of society.
Mandeville writes, Physicians valu d Fame and Wealth/ Above the dropping Patient s Health (71
72). As example of greed, medical professionals pursuit of capital gain and social stature are the
driving factor in treating patients rather than an altruistic desire to aid humanity. Again,
Mandeville displays occurrences of vice within society by demonstrating instances of individual s
pursuit of wealth at the expense of others, Their Kings were serv d, but Knavishly,/ Cheated by
their own Ministry;/ ...Robbing the very Crown they saved (113 117). The King s own advisors
and officials steal from him, greedily pursuing their own self interests over that of the Kingdom.
Mandaville is a realist in the sense that he acknowledges humanities inherent drive to serve oneself
before others and engage in immoral and corrupt behavior. He addresses greed and dishonesty in
private life without hesitation or resentment. It is this self pursuit that Mandeville argues actually

A Bar At Folies Bergere
In late 19th century Paris, cafГ©s concerts (best described as glorified beer halls (Clark 206))
were a very popular destination for the people of Paris. CafГ©s concerts became an integral part
of Parisian social life, as they were visited by hundreds of people each night, regardless of class. A
bar at the Folies BergГЁre became the topic of Edouard Manet s last painting, as Manet tried to
portray the new, modern Paris, and the introduction of mass production during this time. A Marxist
art historian, T.J. Clark finds this particular painting important because it revealed a lot about the
new, modern Paris, and Manet s intentions with the painting. Clark focuses more on the emergence
of the new social classduring this time, and how this affected the role of women in Paris. The
painting, A bar at Folies BergГЁre, has historical significance because of how it depicts modernity
in the context of the emergence of a new social class (the petite bourgeoisie), the introduction of
mass production, and the changing role of women.
Manet was well known for his paintings of modernity , which tried to capture Paris during the
late 1800 s, revolutionizing painting during this time. He wanted to capture modern life, and this
is why he chose to do a painting about the Folies BergГЁre. CafГ©s Concerts were considered
very modern for various reasons. They were described as being ordinary, yet successful. They
allowed for the mixing of classes to occur. There was no distinction in, who came

A Rose For Boland s Fond Memory
Eavan Boland s Fond Memory is a poem which is used to explore the poets past, acting as a
vehicle for returning to the days of her childhood. This poem is written with the intent to confront
a past memory and creates a relationship between Boland as a young girl and the woman she was
when she wrote this. Through the use of literary techniques we become a part of the journey that
Boland undertakes in order to go back to her childself and speak about her memories. This is a
very personal poem as Boland is sharing part of her life with us. The personal element to the poem
allows a relationship to be formed with the reader as she engages with our emotions. The
relationship between the poet and the reader creates a stronger image of the young lonely girl that
Boland is writing about.
The use of imagery in Fond memory is reflective of what it was like as a young Irish girl growing
up in London. The separation between Boland and the other children is represented through the
negative imagery that she uses to describe them, all the children wore darned worsted, reflecting
her dislike towards them. It is interesting that the same negative imagery isn t used when she
describes herself, I dressed in wool as well the descriptions are separate so the reader views them
as two separate identities, mirroring how Boland was viewed at the time. By emphasising the
hostility that she felt as a child, Boland is also revealing that as an adult she still harbours
resentment towards the

Does The Welfare System Work Essay
In 1935 president Roosevelt create the Welfare system as a result of the first depression, with
the main goal to decrease or end poverty in America. In the last fifty years the US poverty rate
has gone from 14.3% to 14.8 percent, these numbers prove that poverty in America has has
increased. The topic of my essay is: Does the Welfare System work? In my opinion,Welfare could
be effective, if it s rules are reinforced and a two year time limit is establish. Welfare affects the
United Statesbecause, causes national debt, dependency from its users and affects the middle class
financially.
First of all, Welfare plays one of the major factors why the United States still in debt, there are
one hundred and twenty six antipoverty programs in America today. The nationwide welfare
spending has risen from $107 billion to $688 billion dollars, which is an average of 640% with the
ultimate goal to decrease or end poverty in America. In 1966, the poverty rate was at 14.3%,

Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Medicaid and CHIP, Section 8 Rent, Utility
Bill Assistance, after all of these benefits, the total net income per year becomes a $31,630. Now a
person that makes $60,000 ,obviously does not qualify for any government assistance, after paying
for everything mentioned above to support their family, their net annual income becomes $34,366.
So, comparing both incomes, there is only a difference of $2,736 dollars between both
individuals. This is one of the main reasons why the middle class people are discourage and are

The Anglo-Saxon Period
The Anglo Saxon period is the oldest known period of time that had a complex culture with stable
government, art, and a fairly large amount of literature. Many people believe that the culture then
was extremely unsophisticated, but it was actually extremely advanced for the time. Despite the
many advancements, the period was almost always in a state of war. Despite this fact, the Anglo
Saxon period is a time filled with great advancements and discoveries in culture, society,
government, religion, literature, and art. The Angles were a Germanic tribe that occupied the
region which is now Scleswig Holstein, Germany. With their fellow ethnic groups, they formed the
people who came to be known as the English. The Saxons were a Germanic people... Show more

The Christian themes found in the epic, however, however are not integrated into the main part
of the essentially pagan tale (Hutchinson Book of the Arts, www.sirs.com). Works such as Deor,
The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and other poems follows the same basic theme as Beowulf. In
these works, a happy past is contrasted with a precarious and desolate present. This type of
heroic poetry celebrates great heroism even in the face of great danger and overwhelming odds
(Hutchinson Book of the Arts, www.sirs.com). Most of the Christian poetry is marked by the
belief of a simple, relatively unsophisticated Christianity. The names of only two authors are
known. Caedmon, whose story is told by the Venerable Bede, is the earliest known English poet.
Not much is known about him, and almost all of his work has been lost. The other known poet
is named Cynewulf. The only thing known about him is that he signed the poems Juliana, and
The Fates of the Apostles (The Columbia Encyclopedia). Poetry in the Anglo Saxon period is
very different from modern poetry. The verse form for old English poetry is a line of four
stressed syllables and an unfixed number of unstressed syllables that are broken by a caesura. The
lines are usually end stopped and unrhymed. Although writing poetry was very popular in the age,

The Art Of Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was an interesting woman that often portrayed her emotions, feelings, and thoughts
in to her works of art. Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in a town now known as Casa Azul.
In her childhood, Kahlo was faced with many complications that should have ended her life.
Being that she was diagnosed with polio when she was six, and being involved in a fatal bus
accident where most of the bones in her body were fractured including her pelvis, she had a very
hard childhood. In 1939, Frida Kahlocreated a painting that draws your attention as to why she
created this piece of art. Frida Kahlo is known for her surrealist ways since most of her works of
art are seen as bizarre and often graphic. From research, I am seeing that Kahlo had many
personal tragedies that lead to the creations of many emotional and raw paintings (The Art
Story). In 1946, Kahlo received a national prize for her painting Moses, (The Art Story). Kahlo,
only 47 at the time, passed away on July 13, 1954 in Casa Azul which is now referred to as the
Frida Kahlo Museum. This painting is an oil on canvas located in the Collection of the Museo de
Arte Moderno in MexicoCity. According to PBS.org, it is believed that the painting expresses
Kahlo s feelings since her divorce from her husband had just taken place. Kahlo was from two
totally different backgrounds being that her mother was Mexican with a Indian and Spanish

Imagery In Devil In The White City
In the nonfiction novel The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson uses Imagery, dark tone, and
oxymorons to portray H. H. Holmes, whose point of view is half of the story, as the Devil
incarnate: evil and subhuman. Larson utilizes imagery to exemplify Holmes character and
actions to the audience. He describes Holmes reaction to a friend s sister s death to give the
reader an idea of the cold inhumanity he possesed. Even though Holmes told Ned how sorry he
was about her passing, yet in his eyes there was only a flat blue calm like that of a lake on a still
August morning (123). Larson presents this imagery to give the reader a clear view of Holmes
point of view on death. When he reacts with such a flat blue calm, the reader can clearly see that
he did not posses even the slightest bit of sincerity. This serves to help the reader see the surface,
and allude to what lies beneath. Larson further proves his inhumanity with the portrayal of
Holmes murder of his pregnant fiancГ©e, Julia. Holmes promised he would marry her, but with
the condition that she had to allow him to execute an abortion. He then held the cloth coated in
chloroform over her nose and mouth and within seconds her eyes fluttered and rolled upwards
followed by the inevitable, reflexive disturbance of muscles, like a dream of running (148). Larson
uses words like flutter and rolled to show the reader that her consciousness fled from her with no
objection from her being noted. This is to

Andreas Gursky s Dropping The Han Dynasty Urn
The ongoing process of mass production has caused a major shift in the relationship between the
consumer and the object. This is apparent through the growth of advertising and its effect on
human perception as well as major historical events which have tainted societies cultural identity.
Issues regarding mass production and mass consumption have been a key area of critique for
many post war artists, political activists and Popism artists. This can be demonstrated through
creative practitioners such as Ai Weiwei and his response to the Chinese Cultural Revolution in his
work Dropping the Han Dynasty Urn (1995), Andreas Gursky s exploration of globalization and
the dramatic increase in the availability of consumer goods in his work 99 Cent (2001)... Show

The History and Future of Wrestling

their opponents through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques (Fila Official ).
Takedowns are described as the action that occurs from the standing/neutral position when an
opponent is taken to the mat and controlled (Isport). Developed in Great Britain and the United
States under the name catch as catch can, Freestyle became the favorite attraction in fairs and
popular celebrations during the nineteenth century. The goal of this sport is to bring the opponents
shoulders to the ground and almost all holds are allowed. Over half a dozen United States
Presidents practiced it, including: George Washington, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses Grant, Andrew
Johnson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It has been in every Olympics since 1904,
except for 1908. For national and international events, singlets must be blue or red (Fila Official ).
Singlets must have your country s emblem on the chest, abbreviation of country s name and last
name in Latin letters. The coach of the wrestler must have a cloth handkerchief with him during the
entire match. (Rulebook)

There are times when it seems that Helga is unknowingly saying these thoughts out loud, which
only serves to add to her idiosyncrasies.
The relationships formed on their journey, however unconvincing or bizarre some may seem,
shape the novels and define the impressions on the reader. The Bell Jar is an unsettling account of
a young woman s descent into psychosis, where Plath focuses on the individual, whilst exploring
how Esther regards relationships and how they influence her search for her own identity. In a
similar fashion, Helga Crane is on a continuous search for a genuine sense of self, a place she feels
that she belongs. Although perhaps to a lesser extent than Plath, Larsen uses the superficial nature
of Helga s relationships with others as a way of expressing her distance from the rest of society.
There are several fundamental similarities between the two characters that are interesting to note:
they both feel isolated and misunderstood, they both wish to reject the prejudices of society

Yeast Concentration Lab Report
In the standard protocol with only glucose and yeast, Figure 1 indicates that Tube 3 with the most
yeast concentration has the greatest values, and tube 2 which has 1.4% yeast produces less CO2.
From the data collected it can be concluded glucose and yeast is necessary in the production of ,
which agrees with the equation for glycolysis since glucoseis the sugar that supplies the energy and
yeastis the substance that performs the cycle. The higher concentration of yeast will result in more

fructose decreased the tolerance for ethanol in yeast (Francisco Javier De la Torre Gonzalez Jose). It

conclusions found one step closer to being defined and completely explained since it is important to

The Is A Philosophical Theme Taught By Epicurus
Epicureanism is a philosophical theme taught by Epicurus, this theme that stresses the goal of a
joyful and a pleasurable life. In the Hellenistic Age, epicureanism was extremely influential.
Epicurus, the founder of Epicureanism, is best known for his different personality, unlike all the
other ancient philosophers, excluding Socrates (O Keefe). Epicurus accumulated a group of
disciples and taught them, after that he became known as the philosophy of the Garden. The
wisdom theory, epicureanism, is a form of the hedonismtheory that describes different types of
pleasure, different types of desires, the virtues, the importance of friendship, and death.
Epicureanism is a philosophical theory that is a form of hedonism. Epicurus once said, That the
only thing that is intrinsically valuable is one s own pleasure; anything else that has value is
valuable merely as a means to securing pleasure for oneself (O Keefe). This quote from Epicurus
shows that pleasure is important to the value of happinessin life. But how is Epicureanism a type of
hedonism? The answer is that, Epicureanism is a form of hedonism because they both believe that
pleasure is what leads to happiness. Since they both believe that pleasure leads to happiness, the
way to know the difference between the two is that hedonists believe that the people must find a
way to increase their own pleasures, whatever they might include and Epicureanism is the belief
that people must control their own pleasures based

Behavior Change Tests
Introduction In the figure below, Catania and colleagues have explained the process of
behavioural change and how each step impacts the overall approach of the individual. The figure
confirms all of the steps that have been aforementioned and illustrate how the success of each step
is important for not only its completion but also the appropriate initiation of the next step (Catania
et al, 1990). The labelling refers to the recognition of the problem; the commitment to the stage of
planning to resolve the problem; and, the enactment to the action taken. In this paper we will
mainly highlight how the different behaviour change tests will impact an individual when he
chooses to sustain a medium sized company. The paper will be divided across four sections: the
first will be the critical evaluation of the GET profile and test (attached) where the various personal
traits highlighted in the results will be discussed; the second section will include the supporting
evidence for assessments inclusive of universal examples; the third section will include the
antecedent influences that I had, primarily, in the form of advice from my family members, that
instigated the development of certain business traits in me; the fourth and final section will include
the implications of these tests on my business traits. The paper will then end with a conclusion of
further personal analysis on my business. Critical Evaluation GET profile Collaborative It could

Gangs Of New York Book Vs Movie Analysis
Details of the Unknown. Snow covered cobbled streets, lined with lanterns and lamps of unique
design. Inside brewery, in an intersection called Five Points housed people of all different
diversities. Black, German, Irish even pure American, were huddled together in this dark and
dingy brewery where light barely reaches it except through the very windows it holds. This was
what the beginning scene would look like in a movie. A specific movie called Gangs of New York

The movie Gangs of New York seemed almost as if summarizing everything into one piece. The
books held facts, details, truths that the movie just couldn t cover in two entire hours. The
authors, Gilfoyle, Asbury, and Anbinder showed us just what exactly urban history is like which
was honest, not overdramatized, factual, and real. While admittedly a good movie, the Gangs of
New York is a great recommendation for fun, but if comparing it with history the movie is just
pure fiction. An overdramatized, thug life of a man in past New York seeking revenge for the
death of his father by the hands of Bill the Butcher. Understanding history, even if its urban history
is no great feat in itself. For example, at the end of the movie there was the grave of the father of
Amsterdam Vallen who was the leader of the Dead rabbits. The scene changed and fast forwards
through time where the graves began to be covered in grass and weeds till eventually the graves
were gone. That scene is just like history, until history is told, it will just sit and eventually be

Stonewall Uprisings
During the mid 1900 s, New York City s queer citizens were discriminated against and faced an
anti gay system. The Stonewall Uprisings were a set of raids and riots in the 1960 s that took

hundreds of years of discrimination and violence against gayand transgender people in America as
well as the influence of new thinkers like the writers of the Beat Generation who were trying to

Michael Jackson Overcoming Obstacles
Michael Jackson
Have you ever had to overcome obstacles? I know I have. Michael Joseph Jackson was born on
August 29,1958 in Gary, Indiana. He lived in a small house with eight other siblings(Pratt,16).
Growing up Michael s family learned music through watching and hearing their father, but many
things with their father took a big turn. As life continued, Joe Jackson took interest in his boys
musical talent and started a band called, The Jackson 5.
They began doing small gigs to opening acts for many big top artists. Soon they began to hit the
charts, becoming the big talk of the town and a big hit with and for Motown Records. As all things,

Joe Jackson was known for being too violent to his children. He was known for hitting the kids
regularly for disobeying(Pratt, 18). Growing up Michael and his siblings weren t allowed to

whooped his son for popping a string on his guitar and that was the night they became a musical

Israel And Peace Now
For hundreds of years the Jews and Muslims have fought tirelessly over territory in Israel. Since
the Zionists invaded palestine in the late 1800s, the conflict has been unceasing and ever growing.
There have been talks of peace and it has been almost achieved, however an agreement has never
been reached due to many circumstances. Peace Now is an organization devoted to bringing peace
and understanding to the region of Israeland Palestine. We believe that the military and civilian
control of the west bankand of over three million Palestinians is a true danger to the security and

These Palestinians have been working for decades to return to their homeland, but the Israeli
government does not recognize this as a legitimate legal right. We believe that it is possible and
essential to resolve this issue in a manner that would recognize the protests of the refugees, while
still keeping the character of the state of Israel intact. Israel has acknowledged these claims
during peace talkts, and has offered to allow a set number of Palestinians to return to Israel and
would be given some form of compensation for the loss of the refugees property. This solution is
not acceptable to palestine really, and more negotiation is crucial to finding a complete and lasting
peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. Peace Now believes in the Geneva Initiative s
solution for the refugee problem. This would entail providing financial compensation to the
Palestinian refugees and to the states that have been harboring them while they were exiled. There
are several options for the Palestinian refugees and where they can take their permanent place of
residence. Some of these are to create a future Palestinian state, they can remain in their current
state, or several third party countries, including Israel, can allow them to migrate there at their
choosing. The most fair and likely of these solutions for both sides would actually be a
combination of all of these options.

The Ancient Greek Culture In The Epic Of Ancient Greece
Every culture is defined by its values and traditions. The Ancient Greek culture served as a structure
for many aspects of Western Civilization. A remarkable civilization thrived in Greece. The period of
Greece was an incredible time for achievements and findings in literature, art, language, science, and
others. Its people created the first democratic government, the first Olympic Games, and they made
significant benefactions to architecture. FINISH
Indeed, Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, personifies the value of intelligence herself and
appreciates it very much in humans, like Odysseus and Telemachus. In the epic of The Odyssey,
Odysseus, a brilliant Greek warrior fighting in the Trojan War, has tried countless times to return
home, but because he offended Poseidon, the god of the sea, Odysseus has been held confined.
With Odysseus being held captive, many men have tried to take over his kingdom. It is then that
Athena decided to help recreate wisdom and trust among Odysseus son; she went to restore the
young man s confidence (The Odyssey, 2). For this reason, Athena is a goddess who is bright,
self assured, and realistic, all of which she finds in Odysseus son Telemachus. She goes on to say,
and assure you that he will not be away much longer; for he is a man of such resource that even
though he were in chains of iron he would find some means of getting home again (The Odyssey,
2). Reestablishing this confidence within Telemachus gave him a sure feeling

Analysis Of The Catcher In The Rye By J. D. Salinger
A lost sixteen year old boy deals with death and trying to find his place in the world. Despite
growing up in a privileged white household, Holden Caulfield is still crippled with feeling
invisible. In Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye, he makes Holden come to life by creating a
personality that is easily relatable to rebellious teenage boys. And though this work caused much

It s so phony (Salinger 115). Holden is different from most teenage boys, he is overwhelmed

like he is disappearing into the adult world. To guarantee his place in the it, Holden calls out to
Allie don t let me disappear. Please Allie (Salinger 213). His fear of conformity is another reason
why this book was so controversial. Parents felt threatened by Salinger s views on a non
conformist society and contradicted their beliefs (Weinstein 125). People did not want to listen
to Salinger s views on society, because he threatened the new, stable, 1950 s American society. In
the meantime, teenagers during this time were becoming more rebellious and defiant. Holden
exemplified the kid that parents did not want their child to turn into or the kid that they did not
want their child hanging with. He is described to be a troubled teen trying to work his way
through adolescence in a world peopled by phonies (Kahane). The phonies of the world are those
people who surrendered their individuality to conform to society s definition of normal. Holden s
rebellious nature is a result of defying the social norms and pressures of his time. He is thought to

Pemberton Company, which gave him a huge salary, did not run so smoothly. The reason why
Pemberton s business did not run very well was due to the period of prohibition during the year
1885. Since Atlanta prohibited the use of alcohol in 1885, Pemberton had to swap the French
Wine Coca formula by removing the word French Wine (Biography John S. Pemberton Inventor

Characteristics Of A Representative Democracy
I. Introduction
Though the modern academic may describe a political regime as a democracy , what they almost
always imply is that said political regime is a representative democracy. A representative
democracy obtains its legitimacy from the agency of the people; for a democracy to be
representative, officials are elected to represent the interests of their citizens and are thus
accountable to both the rules of political institutions and the needs of their constituents. The most
basic facets to a representative democracy such as free and fair elections and strong competition
between political parties are cornerstones to the structuring of a representative democracy, and yet
there are cases within the past century in which representative democracies with elections and
competitive political parties descend into authoritarian regimes. So though the election of
representatives is paramount to modern democracies, there are other factors that constitute what
Leonardo Morlino calls the qualities of democracy. Morlino subdivides the qualities of a democracy
into rule of law, electoral accountability, institutional accountability, competition, participation,
freedom and equality, and responsiveness.
There is no denial that all seven of these criteria Morlino are essential to the establishment and
maintenance of a representative democracy. However, I would like to argue that four of the most
important aspects to assessing the quality of a democracy are independent branches of

Medical errors are among the five most common causes of death in the United States, among them
cardiovascular, cancer, stroke and lung disease. According to scientists, the number of deaths of
Americans as a result of medical errors exceeds the number of deaths caused by breast cancer, car
accidents or AIDS. Checking the quality of care insurance company organized for the benefit of the
patient, and as a result hospitals financially punishes not only technical, but also for medical errors
(Ulene, 2008).
Implementation of the system to contain costs for voluntary health insurance does not mean that
reduce the amount of services provided to patients by insurance. Efforts are aimed at optimizing the
examination and treatment. For example, in our surgical hospital, through the use of advanced
surgical techniques, digital mobile X ray, the patient with a hip fracture can be discharged on day

Urgently needed is the harmonization of standards of examination and treatment. Indeed, insurance
companies fear that in the epoch of private medicine, clinics tend to provide the best possible
service and therefore resort to a system matching each service provided by the insurer. It should be
noted that at present all serious, major insurance companies

supernatural aspects and the form of diction to create a more sinister mood. Both these gothic
elements will be examined to determine in which way they caused pandemonium throughout the

When examining the supernatural aspects of both The Devil s Advocate and Doctor Faustus it is
imperative to come to terms with the fact that both have religious connections and that even
religion caused pandemonium in the lives of Faustus and Kevin Lomax. Faustus was a well

One of the most palpable diction aspects that we can examine is the use of foreshadowing. In both
Doctor Faustus and The Devil s Advocate there are similar warnings that may be seen as
foreshadowing. Mephastophilis says Think st thou that I, that saw the face of God, And tasted the
eternal joys of heaven, Am not tormented with ten thousand hells In being deprived of everlasting
bliss? (Act 1, scene 3, lines 75 78). Even though Mephastophilis is loyal to Lucifer it can be
assumed that he is not happy and that is why he warns Faustus. Lomax was also warned by his
devil that he should be taking care of his wife and to spend time with her but this was only a way
Milton/Satan used to subconsciously manipulate Lomax. Another warning that Lomax received
can be found in the words of Milton/Satan when they first met We kill you with kindness, that s
our secret . Both Faustus and Lomax suffered at the hands of their devils (they may not even have
been aware of this) and these examples of foreshadowing mentioned above are clear examples of
their inevitable fates. Both Faustus and Lomax s fates lead to damnation and at the end both tried

Analysis Of The Book Shiloh
Have you ever stopped to think if society and acceptance was a better life years ago? Would you
have liked to live under the strict rules and guidelines they did in the nineteenth century? The
short story, Shiloh, is written in the 1970 s and is a story about a couple going through changes
in their life and trying to cope after the death of the son, years ago. The settings is in western
Kentucky, and the lives of Norma Jean and Leroy, have been reunited after Leroy has been
disabled in a tractor trailer accident. For the last fifteen years Leroy has been on the road and
seldom is home. The story is told from Leroy s point of view and he quickly realizes he does not
know his wife any longer. Norma Jean, Leroy s wife, undergoes major life changes as she and
Leroy work to maintain a normal household. Gender roles, relationships, and communication are
important factors that must be addressed when any couple enter into an ongoing relationship. In the
story Shiloh, it is no different, but what is different is the acceptance of how these issues are
carried out. Gender roles were definitely reversed at a time when it was not as acceptable. The
relationship and communication became non existent. Shiloh begins with Norma Jean working on
her pectoral muscles. Leroy sees her as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is a strong, thin character
that Leroy can identify with. Their relationship suffers incredibly after the accident and Leroy is
forced to be home. Leroy loves his wife

My First Semester At Byu Idaho
I was desperately lost while studying theater during my first semester at Brigham Young

spend time with my family and one where I d be in a position to improve the lives of others. After
taking my first acting class I knew it wasn t what I wanted to do. Since then, I have considered
everything from psychology to accounting. Research and volunteer opportunities, advice from
trusted mentors, and my educationplayed roles in my decision process. I learned to manage my
time wisely in order to spend time with my family. Most importantly, I was able to decide on a
career in optometry, and have since planned out what I want to do after optometry school.
After my first semester at BYU Idaho, I took a two year break from school to serve as a missionary
for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Africa. I dedicated my time to serve the
people surrounding me. Usually the service was simple things: helping wash laundry by hand,
preparing meals, cleaning or even building a mud home. I enjoyed every bit of service I was
able to offer. My parents taught me the importance of hard work, and my upbringing is the reason
I find joy in serving others. This joy has guided me as I have chosen my career path.

and supplying of drugs became easer in the cite ghettos with the lack of police in the areas. And
with the drugs came crime. The situation was not helped when people could buy a news paper
just as easy as a gun. Death by drugs and crime in these areas were higher then any were else s in
America. In the 1970s 30 per cent of America crimes were reported by six cites in America that
only had 12 per cent of the total population of America. And these cites had large black ghettos and
populations.
Much of the crime in America was drug related. This had a ripple effect on the ghettos law and
order was not respect. People how became addicts began robbing to pay for there habits. To make
matters worse drug gangs started street battles over selling areas of the cites.
The governments tried tackle the issue by building urban house for the people of these ghettos.
They failed hugely. The high rise apartments became drug and crime ridden. The effects were seen
through out life some of them were isolation , marriage break ups .
Some governments did try tackling the issue people like J.F.K gave more money to education and

District 9
District 9 opens up as if it was a documentary, a mockumentary give or take. These first 15 minutes
of the film establish the world, fleshed out with interviews, news footage, corporation logs and
found footage of the alien ship hovering over Johannesburg. It is made clear that these aliens first
arrived during the 1980 s and have been living amongst humans ever since. Throughout the 15
minute opening, it is communicated that the extraterrestrials are an unwelcome threat to the people
of Johannesburgas the viewer is further informed through the film s narrative, their understanding of
this supposed threat evolves. In District 9, the mise en scene effectively sets the mood of the film
while driving the narrative and fleshing out the world... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The aliens are portrayed as being vulnerable and lost as they live captivated by the MSU. The mise
en scene of the camps captivates the viewer with images of destruction, barbed wire, and
dilapidated homes. Therefore, the film undoubtedly serves as an allusion to the apartheid in South
Africa. The mise en scene plays a huge role in this connection, as the camera roles by a chain of
signs saying, For Humans Only , No Non Human Loitering , No! Not Welcome . This portrays the
human population being against the alien presence, preferring to be segregated instead of united.
These images have direct connection to South Africa s past, while also being reminiscent of the
European refugee camps and the Jim Crow laws in

Game Of Fortune And The Role Of Virtu
Benjamin Thompkins

Game of Fortune the Role of Virtu Often times we watch many things in our life without
necessarily looking at the context of what we are observing, and taking note of the politics that
take play. Game of Thrones is a series on HBO adapted from the book by George R. R. Martin
that has a number of politically charged issues. The show takes precedence in a land called The
Seven Kingdoms composed of several territories most notable being Westeros. It takes place during
the War of 5 Kings where several opposing factions vie for rule of the Iron Throne (King of the
Seven Kingdoms ) located in Westeros. During this civil war there is a force in the North beyond
the walls that civilized men from The Seven Kingdoms built to hold an ominous (nightwalkers)
force outside their realm. In the show a number of actors points of view are followed. The viewer
watches alliances, trust, deception, fortune, and skill come into play. This spiral of conflict for
possession of the throne started when King Robert Baratheon became ill and died. However,
turmoil for the Iron Throne is nothing new for the land since it had not long ago been ruled by the
Mad King Targaryen whose lineage had ruled the throne for long reign. Conflicts arise among many
of the parties that had invested interest in the throne. Scandals and accusations put many in the
realm at junctions where they must form alliances. As these events transpire

The Industrial Revolution Of Philadelphia
INTRODUCTION: April 8, 2012 was the Sunday that Easter was celebrated that year. This date
will also be forever remembered as the day that Lieutenant Robert Neary and Firefighter Daniel
Sweeney lost their lives at the Thomas Buck Hosiery Factory fire in Philadelphia, PA. Since
William Penn first founded the city of Philadelphia in 1682, it has been an evolving and growing
city, from a 17th century colonial city to the capital of the United States during the American
Revolution. The industrial revolution of the 19th century transformed the green fields of lower
Kensington, a section of Philadelphia, to a mixture of homes and mills by 1875.... Show more

At 03:17 am, Engine 2 arrives on location and reports that he has heavy fire showing from the
first and second floors, and requests a full first alarm assignment. One minute later he reported
that he had fire all the way to the roof in a 6 story building, 60 x one city block. He then
requested a full second alarm assignment and notified the dispatch center to prepare for the
third alarm. Around 3:30 am, before most 2nd alarm companies arrived on the fireground. the
first of many collapses occurred. A large section of wall collapsed from the upper story on the
York Street side and crashed on to the street. By 4:01 am, this fire would grow to a five alarm
response. With the arrival of Engine 2 and other arriving companies, command was established,
and the fire scene was divided into four geographic divisions (A, B, C, D) to manage this defensive
fire. Command was passed from Engine 2 to the Battalion Commander, then to the Division
commander and lastly to the Deputy Commissioner. As the fire intensified, the command structure
grew to include an operations section, logistics, safety and an exposure group lead by a Battalion
Chief. For over two hours the approximately 45 apparatus and over 150 firefighters and paramedics
fought to contain the fire to the original complex and protect the surrounding neighborhood. The
weather that night brought 17 mph winds, with gusts over 30 mph. These winds, combined with
the heavy fire load

Cosmopolitanism, Artificial Intelligence, And Factor X
The ideas of Cosmopolitanism, Artificial Intelligence, and Factor X are all exceptionally complex.
Each of them involves the advancement of society, and how people interact with each other and
technology. Kwame Anthony Appiah writes about the idea that we have obligations to
others...taking an interest in the practices and beliefs that lend them significance, (69) in Making
Conversation , the idea is Cosmopolitanism. Cosmopolitanism is seen as being able to understand
and accept the cultures and traditions of others. Despite how different other cultures may be,
cosmopolitanism allows for one to be able to accept the traditions of others without having to agree
on the principles. In Authenticating , Brian Christian writes about the ideas of... Show more content

The reality is that these intelligent machines can imitate a majority of human action and responses
and this proves to be true in the Turing Test. A Harvard graduate student, a judge of the Turing
test, said I really thought [PC Therapist] was human because it...was weird and funny, in a normal
sort of way, (Christian 98). Although there have been great advancements made in the
development of artificial intelligence they are not normally considered to be human, specifically
because they do not have a life history, emotions, and more importantly their remains the question
of human consciousness, (Fukuyama 197). As of right now AI do not have a sense of self or the
ability to differentiate between the emotions and feelings that humans have, but with further
research scientists are hopeful that there is progress being made in that area of the development
of AI. The issue here is that what morals and ethics would apply to artificial intelligence, now
while they do not have a conscious and in the future if they can possibly be programmed with a
conscious. There would also need to be morals and ethics in how artificially intelligent machines
are treated. In Fukuyama s essay he writes that There have been conferences and earnest
discussions devoted to the question of whether it would be moral to turn off such a machine if and
when this breakthrough occurs, (Fukuyama 197). Ethics would indeed have to evolve in order

The freedom to talk, freedom to express one self, freedom of religion and of the press and so on. Drafted in their mind this beautiful picture that made America great, Freedom . Freedom does not only mean one who has been set free from bondage or gained independence but the right of many to freely express themselves peacefully without intervention of any authority. Having freedom is like a bird having the ability to fly with the mindset that the founding fathers planted a seed that was watered by the happiness of the people and as outlined in the 1st Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances . • 5. Analysis Of Jim Mccormick s Short Story Breaking Through... The two stories Breaking through Uncertainty and Neighbours are both stories about how big the benefits are when risks have been taken. The first short story is about how a skydiver must overcome his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still dramatic, just in a different tone; it s about a young woman, who must decide whether or not a friendship is worth standing up for something that s right. The protagonists in both stories, have to take risks, and they re both rewarded for taking those risks; one with his life, and the other with a stronger friendship. Even though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in Neighbours had more gut to do what she had to do, where is the skydiver just let second nature take over. Above all, the protagonists both did experience serious risktaking moments, and they both benefited for the greater good. Breaking Through Uncertainty by Jim McCormick is about how a skydiver is plummeting to his death, and he has got to figure out how to save himself. All the while the skydiver must deal with his self doubt. In paragraph eight, we see actually how much danger the skydiver is in I looked up to assess my canopy and saw something I don t often see; the horizon clearly visible ABOVE the trailing edge of my canopy. The skydiver obviously now knows what the stakes are if he messes up, which make his self doubt start to kick in. He starts to worry he s not going to do it, the only thing ... • 7. Analysis Of The Grumbling Hive, By Bernard Mandeville The renowned economist Milton Friedman once said, Innovation comes from self interest, not government agencies. This idea, seen as controversial and offensive to many, is at the core of Bernard Mandeville s argument in his poem, The Grumbling Hive: or, Knaves turn d Honest. The poem compares the working of society to a busy hive. The hive is flourishing until suddenly the bees become honest and righteous leading them to live simple lives without a thrive community. Through this analogy, Mandeville argues that pursuit of private vices generates public improvements and economic prosperity, meaning, individuals tendencies to pursue their own vices, such as lust and greed to innovationfor society as a whole. This is demonstrated through the benefits of marijuana legalization. Mandeville addresses many aspects of degeneracy and selfishness within private life, highlighting vice as an intrinsic and unavoidable part of . Vice, by Mandeville s standards, is an action that fulfills the individual in some respect but is immoral, selfish, and unfair. The seven deadly sins provide a framework for behavior that would be considered detrimental and self regarding. Mandeville, in the poem, provides examples of such actions within all echelons of society. Mandeville writes, Physicians valu d Fame and Wealth/ Above the dropping Patient s Health (71 72). As example of greed, medical professionals pursuit of capital gain and social stature are the driving factor in treating patients rather than an altruistic desire to aid humanity. Again, Mandeville displays occurrences of vice within society by demonstrating instances of individual s pursuit of wealth at the expense of others, Their Kings were serv d, but Knavishly,/ Cheated by their own Ministry;/ ...Robbing the very Crown they saved (113 117). The King s own advisors and officials steal from him, greedily pursuing their own self interests over that of the Kingdom. Mandaville is a realist in the sense that he acknowledges humanities inherent drive to serve oneself before others and engage in immoral and corrupt behavior. He addresses greed and dishonesty in private life without hesitation or resentment. It is this self pursuit that Mandeville argues actually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. A Bar At Folies Bergere In late 19th century Paris, cafГ©s concerts (best described as glorified beer halls (Clark 206)) were a very popular destination for the people of Paris. CafГ©s concerts became an integral part of Parisian social life, as they were visited by hundreds of people each night, regardless of class. A bar at the Folies BergГЁre became the topic of Edouard Manet s last painting, as Manet tried to portray the new, modern Paris, and the introduction of mass production during this time. A Marxist art historian, T.J. Clark finds this particular painting important because it revealed a lot about the new, modern Paris, and Manet s intentions with the painting. Clark focuses more on the emergence of the new social classduring this time, and how this affected the role of women in Paris. The painting, A bar at Folies BergГЁre, has historical significance because of how it depicts modernity in the context of the emergence of a new social class (the petite bourgeoisie), the introduction of mass production, and the changing role of women. Manet was well known for his paintings of modernity , which tried to capture Paris during the late 1800 s, revolutionizing painting during this time. He wanted to capture modern life, and this is why he chose to do a painting about the Folies BergГЁre. CafГ©s Concerts were considered very modern for various reasons. They were described as being ordinary, yet successful. They allowed for the mixing of classes to occur. There was no distinction in, who came ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. A Rose For Boland s Fond Memory Eavan Boland s Fond Memory is a poem which is used to explore the poets past, acting as a vehicle for returning to the days of her childhood. This poem is written with the intent to confront a past memory and creates a relationship between Boland as a young girl and the woman she was when she wrote this. Through the use of literary techniques we become a part of the journey that Boland undertakes in order to go back to her childself and speak about her memories. This is a very personal poem as Boland is sharing part of her life with us. The personal element to the poem allows a relationship to be formed with the reader as she engages with our emotions. The relationship between the poet and the reader creates a stronger image of the young lonely girl that Boland is writing about. The use of imagery in Fond memory is reflective of what it was like as a young Irish girl growing up in London. The separation between Boland and the other children is represented through the negative imagery that she uses to describe them, all the children wore darned worsted, reflecting her dislike towards them. It is interesting that the same negative imagery isn t used when she describes herself, I dressed in wool as well the descriptions are separate so the reader views them as two separate identities, mirroring how Boland was viewed at the time. By emphasising the hostility that she felt as a child, Boland is also revealing that as an adult she still harbours resentment towards the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Holmes, whose point of view is half of the story, as the Devil incarnate: evil and subhuman. Larson utilizes imagery to exemplify Holmes character and actions to the audience. He describes Holmes reaction to a friend s sister s death to give the reader an idea of the cold inhumanity he possesed. Even though Holmes told Ned how sorry he was about her passing, yet in his eyes there was only a flat blue calm like that of a lake on a still August morning (123). Larson presents this imagery to give the reader a clear view of Holmes point of view on death. When he reacts with such a flat blue calm, the reader can clearly see that he did not posses even the slightest bit of sincerity. This serves to help the reader see the surface, and allude to what lies beneath. Larson further proves his inhumanity with the portrayal of Holmes murder of his pregnant fiancГ©e, Julia. Holmes promised he would marry her, but with the condition that she had to allow him to execute an abortion. He then held the cloth coated in chloroform over her nose and mouth and within seconds her eyes fluttered and rolled upwards followed by the inevitable, reflexive disturbance of muscles, like a dream of running (148). The answer is that, Epicureanism is a form of hedonism because they both believe that pleasure is what leads to happiness. This solution is not acceptable to palestine really, and more negotiation is crucial to finding a complete and lasting peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. Peace Now believes in the Geneva Initiative s solution for the refugee problem. This would entail providing financial compensation to the Palestinian refugees and to the states that have been harboring them while they were exiled. There are several options for the Palestinian refugees and where they can take their permanent place of residence. Some of these are to create a future Palestinian state, they can remain in their current state, or several third party countries, including Israel, can allow them to migrate there at their choosing. The most fair and likely of these solutions for both sides would actually be a combination of all of these options. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. The Ancient Greek Culture In The Epic Of Ancient Greece Every culture is defined by its values and traditions. The Ancient Greek culture served as a structure for many aspects of Western Civilization. A remarkable civilization thrived in Greece. The period of Greece was an incredible time for achievements and findings in literature, art, language, science, and others. Its people created the first democratic government, the first Olympic Games, and they made significant benefactions to architecture. FINISH Indeed, Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, personifies the value of intelligence herself and appreciates it very much in humans, like Odysseus and Telemachus. In the epic of The Odyssey, Odysseus, a brilliant Greek warrior fighting in the Trojan War, has tried countless times to return home, but because he offended Poseidon, the god of the sea, Odysseus has been held confined. With Odysseus being held captive, many men have tried to take over his kingdom. It is then that Athena decided to help recreate wisdom and trust among Odysseus son; she went to restore the young man s confidence (The Odyssey, 2). For this reason, Athena is a goddess who is bright, self assured, and realistic, all of which she finds in Odysseus son Telemachus. She goes on to say, and assure you that he will not be away much longer; for he is a man of such resource that even though he were in chains of iron he would find some means of getting home again (The Odyssey, 2). Reestablishing this confidence within Telemachus gave him a sure feeling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At one point, Holden feels like he is disappearing into the adult world. To guarantee his place in the it, Holden calls out to Allie don t let me disappear. Please Allie (Salinger 213). His fear of conformity is another reason why this book was so controversial. Parents felt threatened by Salinger s views on a non conformist society and contradicted their beliefs (Weinstein 125). People did not want to listen to Salinger s views on society, because he threatened the new, stable, 1950 s American society. In the meantime, teenagers during this time were becoming more rebellious and defiant. Holden exemplified the kid that parents did not want their child to turn into or the kid that they did not want their child hanging with. He is described to be a troubled teen trying to work his way through adolescence in a world peopled by phonies (Kahane). The phonies of the world are those people who surrendered their individuality to conform to society s definition of normal. • 35. Characteristics Of A Representative Democracy I. Introduction Though the modern academic may describe a political regime as a democracy , what they almost always imply is that said political regime is a representative democracy. A representative democracy obtains its legitimacy from the agency of the people; for a democracy to be representative, officials are elected to represent the interests of their citizens and are thus accountable to both the rules of political institutions and the needs of their constituents. The most basic facets to a representative democracy such as free and fair elections and strong competition between political parties are cornerstones to the structuring of a representative democracy, and yet there are cases within the past century in which representative democracies with elections and competitive political parties descend into authoritarian regimes. So though the election of representatives is paramount to modern democracies, there are other factors that constitute what Leonardo Morlino calls the qualities of democracy. Morlino subdivides the qualities of a democracy into rule of law, electoral accountability, institutional accountability, competition, participation, freedom and equality, and responsiveness. There is no denial that all seven of these criteria Morlino are essential to the establishment and maintenance of a representative democracy. However, I would like to argue that four of the most important aspects to assessing the quality of a democracy are independent branches of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
