Jeffrey Bauman s Heroism In The Film Stronger
IntroductionThe film Stronger (2015) based on the memoir of Jeffrey Bauman directed by
David Green, focuses on his life after losing his legs in the Boston Marathon bombings. In the
early scenes of Stronger, the movie shows Bauman s life of recovery and adaptation to living as
a disabled man. Bauman becomes a symbol of hope and inspiration to the people after the
bombing. Bauman comes home to his mother and sees tons of care packages and thank you
letters from people who believe he is an inspiring hero. The day of the Boston marathon, he was
waiting for his girlfriend to cross the finish line while standing a couple inches away from one of
the bombs. After the blast, he becomes one of the most recognizable survivors because of a photo
that went viral. The iconic image shows rescuers saving him thereby depicting him as incapable. He
becomes the disabled on screen characterwho inspires others. In one scene, he is honored to carry
the Boston Strong Flag at the Bruins Game because he became a figure of heroism to the people of
Boston. Green celebrates Bauman s triumph in the face of disability, depicts... Show more content

Here when Bauman opens his letters and care packages, his father states: Bauman kind of
becomes a symbol to a lot of people (36:15). The quote itself shows how the film portrays disability
in Bauman s life. His disability became a comfort and sympathy ploy to the non disabled movie
viewers. Director Green shows us the incapability of Bauman and how he needs to rely on others
while portraying him as the hero of disabled people. The film shows the pleasant side of the
protagonist Bauman s life after his injury while, showing the unwanted aspect of being disabled.
Director Green suggests the life of the inspiring hero isn t wanted. Although director Green depicts
a correlation between Bauman being disabled and his heroic status, is Bauman really a hero if no

How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness
In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and
assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by
Levi can be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest.
Although Levi is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully
grasp how Nietzschean philosophy could view these events.
First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . In chapter 5, Useless Violence ,
Levi concludes that the inhuman Nazi hierarchy spread its inhumanity from the top to all aspects of
its regime (Levi pg 112). Along these lines he acknowledges that this inhumanity spreads
downwards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to
their problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects
the public s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the
Lagers but through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst
the prisoners. Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners
ressentiment onto other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive
aspect of slave morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of
Nazis after the war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts
that the accused relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the
self deception in slave morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities
just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s
philosophy led to his morals becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him
to lose touch with reality (Levi pg 106, 107). He also reflects on the fact that Nietzsche never
desired the suffering of the

Examples Of Colonialism In A Passage To India
In A Passage to India, the colonialists are definitely the stronger race and have authority over the
locals. This authority gives them power which they use against the inferior race, the Indians
(Boehmer 1995: 10). The Indians are considered weak, outcast, and second rate. They are believed
to be different from Europeans, especially the English. Even though the British might have their
own different categories like social class and religions, they are united as opposed to the local
natives (Boehmer 1995: 67). There is very little social integration between the colonialists and the
Indians. Yet there are incidents in the novel that show that the Indians are more sophisticated than
the colonialists. Forster had spent a long time in Indiabefore... Show more content on

They are not to blame, they have not a dog s chance we should be like them if we settled here
(Forster 1979: 176). Mr Turton states that he has never known anything but disaster result when
English people and Indians attempt to be intimate socially (Forster 1979: 182). Contact, in his
opinion, would be allowed, as well as courtesy, but intimacy should not be allowed. Such intimacy
is only negative. Only mutual respect and esteem can enable them to socialize with each other.
The British feel that it vital for them to stick to the unwritten rules on how they behave towards the
locals. These unwritten rules, which the locals are bound to follow in their relations with the
colonialists, safeguard the interests of the British, making them the white superiors. Any
modification of these rules would risk the whole system

The Third Wish, By Joan Aiken
Many stories that have wishes have something about how the wish do not go very well. There are
stories such as The Third Wish by Joan Aiken that are almost based off of this. The story The
Third Wish, exemplifies the theme be careful what you wish for in almost every way.
In the story the main character, Mr. Peters has some run ins with some swans, and they show being
careful what you wish for. One run in with a swan is when he is driving along a road when he
comes across a swan stuck in a bush. He rescues the swan and gets three wishes. When he rescues
the swan the swan tells him, Well I have yet to hear of the human being who made any good use of
his three wishes they mostly end up worse off than they started. This tells us that many

Organizational Behavior And Organizational Behaviour
The above drawn figure shows about organisational behaviour. It highlights the bonding among
human behaviour in organizational settings, the individual organization interface, the organization,
the environment surrounding the organization. In an organization each and every individual brings
its own experience, managerial and effective skills.
Classical Organizational theory: Popovich (2010) said that in this theory, the concentration mainly
goes in how an organization can be structured in effective manner. These three are believed to be
major contributors of organization theory, Henri Fayol, Lyndall Urwick Max Weber. But they all
given same form of structure which was Bureaucratic. Organizational behaviour plays an integral
role in organization s progress, economic growth, and productive results .
Those people who work in organization, they are literally born in there educated in organizations.
They also learn and grab most of their material possessions from organizations and die as members
of organizations. Majority of our activities are regulated by organizations, called governments. Most
adults spend their better part of life working in organizations (Roberts, 2006).
Task no.1.1: Sum up the Leadership Theories: Definition of leadership leader , shows great
influence and bonding with its theories. It is an ability of leader how he influence a group
towards the achievement of a vision or set of goals. Leadership is also about coping with change.

Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut
Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Section I On October 23, 1983, a massive
explosion from a 19 ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241
servicemen (including 220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known
non nuclear explosion since World War II and was the bloodiest day since Iowa Jima, according
to Rick Hampson writing in USA Today. The Marines had been sent to Lebanon as peace keepers,
trying to bring some peace to a civil war that was ongoing in Lebanon. Military observers
subsequent to that horrific event have suggested that this terrorist assault was the beginning of the
reign of terror that radical Islamic would continue to perpetrate on Americans through the next
twenty years. Hampson explains that the bloody attack on American servicemen was ...a seminal
moment on a timeline that led to the 9/11 attacks, to the war the U.S. waged in Afghanistan
(Hampson, 2008). Moreover, Hampson notes that this attack drove the U.S. out of Lebanon but
more than that, if led people like Osama bin Laden to ...conclude that when America gets its nose
bloodied, it pulls back (Hampson, p. 1). Previous to this attack the Cold War era was a time when
the greatest enemy of the U.S. was Soviet communism; but following the attack, there were new
and extremely dangerous enemies such as al Qaeda, Hezbollah, the Taliban and Iran, Hampson
continues. This paper reviews the reasons for the U.S. presence in Beirut, the

Exploring Freshwater Streams: Cherry Creek and Bear Creek
Trisha McNiff BIOL 2081В005 Tucker 04/23/2013
Introduction
On April 6th 2013, our Biology II lab evaluated the health of two freshwater streams in the Denver
area. Both creeks flow to the South Platte River but are situated in different environments (urban
and suburban) which cause variance in biotic and abiotic indicators of stream health. The presence
or absence of bioindicators is dependent on the water chemistry. Through the study of stream health,
we can gain insight on the stress that humans cause to freshwater habitats. I think that Bear Creek is
healthier than Cherry Creek because it is in a less urban environment and is less affected by human
influences. If the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bioindicators of stream health include blackfly larvae, caddisflies, and algae. The presence of
blackfly larvae indicates sewage pollution. Caddisflies indicate higher O2 concentrations. The
presences of algae can indicate different things. If algae is absent, there may not be enough
nutrients to support its growth. Thick algae indicates eutrophication. Previous studies by the
Colorado Department of Health Water Quality Control Commission in 1981 show comparable
amounts of dissolved O2 as well as pH, nitrite, and nitrate levels in both Cherry and Bear creek.
The NH 3 levels were much higher in Cherry Creek at .10 mg/L compared to Bear creek where
the NH 3 levels were at .06 mg/L (Colorado 1981). In today s society, it is important to find a
balance between preserving the natural ecosystem and accommodating the wants, needs, and
desires of the humans who affect it. (Meyer 1997). Pollution is inevitable but should be considered
and kept as low as reasonably achievable.
Materials and Methods The following procedures were carried out carried out at both Cherry
Creek and Bear Creek 04/06/2013. The Colorado Department of Health Water Quality Control
Commission 1981 provide abiotic standards for both creeks will be used as control for the chemical

Paganism In Beowulf
В¬By definition, a Pagan is a person who has religious beliefs other than those of the main world
religion. The epic poem Beowulf was passed down verbally from generation to generation with
enlightening Pagan teachings and elements. Christian elements were not included in the poem until
a Christian monk added them when it was put as written text. However, the Christian aspects
collide with the Pagan elements found in the poem. Beowulfwas originally told with only Pagan
elements. In the article The Essential Pagan Elements in Beowulf , it explains Pagan elements
included in the story such as dragons and magic. We do not hear anything about saints, angels, or
any particular dogmatic points (Moorman). In the Pagan religionwhen a hero or important... Show

Things such as magic, unnatural creatures, and strange scenarios play a huge role in their faith.
However, Christians believe that things such as dragons, witches, magic and the dark arts are of
Satan. While the Pagans view the dragon as a fire breathing, greedy creature keeping treasure in
its lair, the Christians view it as the devil making the setting of hell. The equivalent of Beowulf
in the Christian faith would be Jesus Christ. He came into the world (lair) and freed us from sins
(hell). Pagans view Beowulf as having superhuman powers that let him overcome any trial he
may face. For example of Beowulf s strength, he lifted the giant s magical sword when nobody
else could. His strength is matched by Christian faith with the story of Jesus was resurrected and
came out from the tomb he was buried in. Beowulf fought for peace in the land of Geatland and
Danes. Christ made peace with everyone. They both share qualities of the desire for peace. The
biggest comparison between Beowulf and Jesus Christ is when they both died to save other
people. According to Christian belief, Christ was crucified to save everyone from death.
Beowulf was killed by the dragon in order to save someone else and to calm his soul from the
loss of his village. Christ also found his true followers when he was carrying the cross and they
came to help him. Just like in Beowulf how Wiglaf is Beowulf s companion because he fights by
his side through thick and thin.

Jim Heynen s What Happened During The Ice Storm
Janaya Prout
Quick and Calm
Jim Heynen describes, How beautiful! People said when things outside started to shine with ice.
But the freezing rain kept coming. The story, What Happened During the Ice Storm by Jim
Heynen, is about farm boys going to collect pheasants in the middle of a raging ice storm. Every
animal was safe except for the pheasants. They were frozen in place along the fence and could not
see anything through the ice. After a careful analysis of the story, the reader can understand the
theme, how people act in challenging situations, and human nature through imagery, diction, and
figurative language.
Heynen uses a lot of imagery throughout his story so people can visualize how the storm is
affecting the farm boys in the situation. The narrator explains, Things around them were shining
and dripping with icy rain (Heynen). The icy rain makes it more difficult to concentrate on how
to handle the situation. Upon their arrival to the fence, the boys can see how the storm has taken
a toll on the birds. The narrator states, Some of them lifted their heads and turned them from side
to side, but they were blindfolded with ice and didn t flush (Heynen). The birds could not see
anything due to ice covering their eyes. The pheasants were covered in a sheet of ice. As the reader
can see, the conditions of the ice storm affected not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The author could have easily used plain words to tell the story, but he did not. To describe the
storm, Heynen uses the word splintering. Most people know that splinters sometime hurt. This
gives the illusion that the ice was hitting them in little sharp pieces. Heynen also uses gelatin
whites. Gelatin means translucent so Heynen says that it is see through whites. Last, he uses
clinging to show how the ice is sticking to their skin and is not coming off. As a result, Heynen
uses interesting word choice to describe certain parts of the

How Did Artemis Influence Culture
Artemis: An Influence on Culture
You hear the night wind blowing and see the bright shine of the full moon. Walking carefully with
your bow and arrows in hand, you creep up with the rest of the hunters. Drawing your bow, the
wolves get ready to attack, waiting for your signal. Artemis is the goddess of the moon, prophecy,
hunters, virginity, and healing. She leads her pack of immortal hunters, known as the Hunters of
Artemis. The hunters would travel with Artemis through the woods, protecting wild life and
hunting. Through this they helped keep balance like hunters today do. Greek gods and goddesses
have greatly influenced our culture, especially Artemis.

Arthur M. Schlesinger says that Science and technology revolutionize our lives, but memory,
tradition, and myth frame our response. ( Mythology Quotes ) This quote is saying that we use
science and technology to make our lives better, but what we know effects how we accept us. I
think this is backing up the idea that mythology has a great influence on modern culture. We see
how Artemis especially influences culture through her history, allies, enemies, special abilities,
and ties to culture. So, let s go back to our story. You draw your bow, and, shoot. You make your
target, a huge monster. You keep loosing your arrows until it drops dead. You and your hunters
go to celebrate the victory. We see through the Greek myths that tension can be caused by
individual differences. This is not only true for the Greek myths, but it applies to modern life, to
our society that we live in. In the myths we saw that when the tension rose from the individual
differences they would fight, and the people with individual differences would become enemies.
These stories can be fun to read, but we need to take from them that we can t just fight people
when the tension rises from differences. We need to settle our differences, and not become
enemies with people. This doesn t mean we have to be best friends with these people, but they
should become our enemies, we need to love everyone, even if they are different from

The First Clinical Experience Of A Nurse Essay
The First Clinical Experience
On an early morning in April, my friends and I arrived 45 minutes early to our long term care
facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three of us anxiously awaited stepping foot into the care
facility as we had no idea what was to come. I began to wonder what the patients would be like
and how I would care for them. Consequently, I could feel my heart pounding as I was afraid of
hurting the residents and not promoting healing from their ailments. I didn t know what illnesses
or diseases would place individuals in the healthcare unit in the facility. That terrified me. I
wanted to know everything I could about the residents prior to stepping foot in the building, but
that knowledge wasn t attainable. While trying to process my fears, I was thinking of the quote
from Maya Angelou that says, As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul
and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will
never forget how you made them feel. This lack of knowledge scared me; however, I knew that
regardless of what placed the residents on the unit, I would care for them with respect and
compassion.
Eventually the time rolled around to walk in the front door, and I was shaking with nerves. My
learning community of ten students and our instructor walked into the building, through many
hallways, and onto the unit our first nursing unit. We quietly walked through the center room,
which intersected the four

Comparison Of And The Man He Killed
Both The Man I Killed and The Man He Killed deal with a touchy subject: the morals and ethics
of killing someone in war. The Man He Killed is set during WW1 and is told through the
perspective of an anonymous main character while The Man I Killed is set during the Vietnam
war and is told through the perspective of O Brien. The story may convey a similar message, but
three things that set the two works of literature apart are the setting, reaction, and the person. In
The Man He Killed , a soldier in WW1, presumably European, kills an enemy for his first time.
This soldier s war was a completely different beast than Nam. In WW1 the front line was obvious,
their army was on one side and the enemy was on the other, which made it clear

Racial Inequality In The NFL
For many, speaking up for what you believe in can be difficult and risky, but ultimately worth the
risk. Colin Kaepernick took this risk, by kneeling during the national anthem to stand up against
police brutality and the inequality that people of color (NFL). With many unjust shootings and
police beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick s teammate Eric Reid couldn t stand the
violence anymore after the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La (Reid).
Reid joined Kaepernick in taking a knee during the national anthem, in doing this Kaepernick and
Reid inspired other players to raise awareness and help those in need. This decision caused huge
impacts on the nation, the NFL, and the youth who look up to the players of the NFL. Racial
inequality will always be a huge topic in the United Statesof America, and continues today to still
be a huge topic. With the NFL players raising awareness by kneelingand locking arms together
during the national anthem, the topic of racial inequality has gained more interest. After
Kaepernick in 2016 first kneeled many other athletes and stars joined the movement to talk about
the problems of racial inequality. People like Ellen DeGeneres, Zendaya, George Lopez, and
many others voice their support for the players (JustJared). This new NFL season has caused more

Essay on Absolutism
Absolutism During the pre Enlightenment period, France and England went through very
dramatic and very different government change. At the beginning of this time period, England
had achieved relative stability, due largely in part to Elizabeth I long and successful reign. On the
other hand, France had been subjected to numerous civil and religious wars, therefore leading to
instability. French absolutism was largely a result of these crises and tragedies, with the country
recognizing the need for a strong, powerful leader, which they found during the long and
successful reign of Louis XIV. In England however, many problems arose due to a series of short

In order to do this, he need to have control of three key elements: the military, tax collection, and
the judicial system, all of which had been controlled locally. In order to seize these powers,
Louis needed to create a bureaucratic system answerable only to the king. Essentially, Louis had
to seize power from the hands of the nobles. Louis succeeded in creating a national tax collection
process, where taxes were paid directly to the king rather then the nobles. This way, by the end
of his reign, Louis was collecting 80% of the taxes due to him whereas before, with the nobles
acting as middlemen, only 30% of the taxes due to the king were actually received. In order to
placate the nobles, he exempted them from taxes, thus appealing to their senses while stripping
them of their power. The nobles began to believe that the only way to achieve a stable and
prosperous state and secure their own interests was to support Louis monarchy. Louis used much
of this money to create a centralized military of professional soldiers and gradually took the
military power from the individual regions. Military allegiance was due only to the king, so the
danger of military rebellion was greatly reduced. He took away regional independence by dividing
the country into six generalitГ©s, each one governed by an appointed member of the upper class
rather then a noble. These governors were required to spend a large amount of time at

Optimism In Voltaire s Candide
FACT: What I found extremely fascinating in Voltaire s work is the idea that It is demonstrable
that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an end, all is
necessarily for the best end (83). This quote by the character Pangloss is one of extreme
optimism. He believes that they are living in the best world possible and everything that
happens is meant to be. This really resonates with me because I do have the belief that God has
an influence over our lives, so with that being said anything that happens good or bad God had a
reason for. The concept of faith is what plays a key role in this belief; we must have faith in God
and what path he paves for us whether we understand it or not. Sometimes he gives us obstacles
to overcome to make us stronger, while other times he may bring good fortune. It may be hard at
times to understand why God does what he does, but we must be able to take a step back and have
faith in God s plan.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pangloss states from the beginning that we live in the best of all possible worlds (81). Which is
seemingly the furthest thing from perfect as we continue to read. Everything that happens to
Candide after being banished from the castle is a series of events that would most likely lead
someone to believe that the world is a terrible place. Misfortune seems to follow Candide and his
optimistic view of the world. He wanders for a time to the point of starvation when he is found by
a group of men who bring him back to health, but only to place him into the hands of the Bulgar

This Assessment Is Based On Life After Death From A Roman
This assessment is based on life after death from a Roman Catholicism perspective. The Roman
Catholic Church is based on the teachings and life of Jesus Christ, his spreading of the word and
all the good he did. The belief of life after death is paramount to the church s faith as it based of the
resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic Churchs beliefs about life after death can be
outlined in 4 sections: judgement, heaven, hell and purgatory.
The Roman Catholic Church
Judgement
One of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church is that when we die we are judged by the
Lord, the Lord judges us on how we have lived our lives on earth; good or bad. It teaches us that

This belief that the Roman Catholics have occurs on the day they call Judgement Day which is
when we die.
Heaven
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Heaven is considered a state, a condition of existence,
rather than a particular place somewhere in the cosmos. Pope John Paul II declared: The heaven or
happiness in which we will find ourselves is neither an abstraction nor a physical place in the
clouds, but a living, personal relationship with the Holy Trinity. It is our meeting with the Father
which takes place in the risen Christ through the communion of the Holy Spirit. Christians who die
not purified must pass through a state of purification before entering into heaven.
This belief and teaching of Heaven is shown in the Roman Catholic Catechism #1023 Those
who die in God s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live forever with Christ. They are
like God for ever, for they see him as he is, face to face: This adds onto the idea that those who
enter heaven and die for God are perfectly purified. It enforces the idea that you must be pure
before you can enter.
This belief is further followed up in the sacred texts and scriptures of Roman Catholicism in
Matthew 18:3. Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter
the kingdom of heaven This emphasises that to enter the kingdom of heaven you must become like
a child, This supports the idea of being fully purified

Analysis Of The Film Selma
Equality and Justice false promises a nation was created to protect. The historical drama, Selma
(2014), directed by Ava DuVernay, depicts some of the struggles African Americans faced in the
pursuit of equality and justice during the mid 1950 s to 1960 s, and the role Martin Luther King Jr.
played in his attempt to overcome such inequalities. Even before its release, Selmareceived backlash
from critics who claimed it falsely depicted Lyndon B. Johnsonat odds with Martin Luther King Jr,
and alleged that the murder of the four girls at the Birmingham Church occurred in September
1963, rather than at the end of 1964, which the film suggests. Regardless of such claims, the film,
Selma, does depict a historical event set forth by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965. During this time
period, racial segregation was prominent, especially in the southern states. The government
justified such segregation based on the 14th Amendment s wording of separate but equal .
However, many African Americans were dissatisfied and demanded true equality. It was not until
the mid 1960 s, after Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, that racial
tension began to decline. Although Martin Luther King Jr. s role was invaluable in the Civil
Rights Movement and required great courage, Selma aims to portray a complex side of King,
mixing his bravery and determination with self doubts and internal conflicts in his pursuit of justice
and equality. To stand up for one s principles in

Impact Of Object Oriented On Software Development Process
ABSTRACT
Object oriented technology has gained popularity for designing applications on a large scale within
the last few years. The software developed by using this paradigm are of superior quality and have
low maintenance cost as compared to the software designed using other programming concepts.
This research paper analyze the benefits of object oriented approach in software development

object oriented languages. Encapsulation means data hiding that makes it feasible to reuse data and
inheritance are the basic mechanisms in the object oriented approach. This paper examines the
concept of reusability and how it can lower the production cost and improves the software quality.

EVOLUTION OF OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING
The complexity of new applications and need to cater different industries having different software
requirements led to the evolution of object oriented approach. Object oriented programming
originated as a value addition to previous developments in the software industry and old
programming languages that had little or no data abstraction. Data abstraction is needed to deal
with complex algorithms. The concept of objects which is the basic building block of object
oriented programming was introduced in Simula (Dahl and Nygaard, 1966), has

Total Recall, The Hunge
Dystopia is an imagined futuristic, place or state where everything is undesirable or dreadful,
typically under dictatorial control or an environmentally downtrodden one. Current norms, trends
or political systems in today s world are criticized in this type of literature. Social characteristics,
types of control, and the dystopian protagonist are three key elements in dystopian stories. In order
to acquire why an author would want to write a dystopian story, as readers, we must try to
understand, why writing a utopian story would be an unexceptional form of literature, to any
respected author, because just thinking about reading about a perfect world without any conflict
what so ever, would bore a daily reader to death. Furthermore, stories like Total Recall, The... Show

by them and by her voice.
Of course...a warrior lives to help beautiful ladies...what can I do for you this evening, madam...?

The Causes Of Youth Sports
Nine out of Ten kids say the reason they play youth sports to have fun. On another note 80% of
children drop out of youth sports by the age of 12 (Reed). Some of the most common reasons
children drop out of youth sports can range from something as simple as not having fun anymore to
something as complex to feeling as if the parent/coach is being unfair to them, like constantly
getting judged after every game. Parents can avoid this all by supporting, not over bearing, Nays,
and making sure the child is having fun and happy. The overall outcome of youth sports should be
for the child to find something they enjoy and to have fun doing it. Most kids when they are
young try various sports and activities to see what they enjoy and parents comments or overbearing
should not be the reason why the child decides to not give the sporta shot or finish out the season.
Which is why parents involvement in youth sports is vital to a child s development and behavior.
One reason why parents are a vital part about Youth Sports is for there support.

Theme Of Death In Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath was a famous American poet; often described as a feminist poet. She was born in
Boston, October 27, 1932 and died on February 11, 1963. She had two children but left them at a
young age as she closed the rooms between herself and her children, left them some bread and milk
and trapped her head in the oven whilst the gas was turned on. She committed suicideat the age of
30. Sylvia used a wide variety of themes in her poems to express the thoughts that she constantly
felt, to express her feelings that she felt no other person could, to tell stories which she went
through and poured out all her emotions to let us know she could feel. I ll be discussing death/
depression as my first theme and victimization as my second: those being one of her main themes,
along with her poems.
Death plays a huge role in Sylvia Plath s poetry; she reveals it in different ways. The main
common theme is the emptiness gone by her father s death at the age of eight. She speaks about
his death and burial remembering that she is forever separated from the love of her father. As
Plath suffered most of her adult life from being depressed, It s said to be that Sylvia Plath s ... Show

many of her poems with a male dominated world is seen as reffering to any of the men that she
forces in her life.
Out of respect to her father, Plath realized that she could never escape his dreadful hold over her;
she stated her logic of victimhood in the poem The Colossus and Daddy, using a wide range of

Hedda Gabler’s Freedom and Repression as Understood...
This passage from the denouement Henrik Ibsen s play, Hedda Gabler, before Hedda s suicide,
is an illustration of the vulnerability and defeat of the impetuous and manipulative titular
character. Ibsen develops Hedda s character by uncovering details about the conflicts between
Hedda and the other characters, Judge Brack, Mrs Elvsted, and George Tesman which highlight
Hedda s transformation from an individualistic to despairing individual, conveying the theme of
freedom and repression in society. Ibsen uses the relationship and conflict between Hedda and
Brack to illustrate Hedda s struggle to assert her free will and power in a male dominated society.
The two characters are united as social equals who are members of the aristocracy as... Show more

Through this stage direction, Ibsen highlights the objectification of women. In many aspects,
George Tesman too does not see Hedda s full value as a person, and from the beginning of the
play, Ibsen makes this clear. Tesman adores rather than love his wife, proudly viewing her as an
object of adornment that makes several of his friends jealous. A scholar who is more devoted to
his work than his wife, Tesman spends more time with his books than his wife, even during their
honeymoon. In this passage, Ibsen further illustrates this objectification of women. Tesman turns
his head away from her because he believes there is nothing in the world (32) that Hedda can
help Tesman with; Hedda is merely an ornament and not of real use to Tesman. Ibsen s use of
stage direction that depicts Tesman turning his head after talking to Hedda both indicate Tesman
s rejection of Hedda as a valuable person and his obliviousness to Hedda and her desperate
situation. Tesman s imperceptiveness is further highlighted by Ibsen when Hedda imitates
Tesman s intonation (16). Also, Hedda s mimicking of Tesman, which is used earlier in the play
as a sign of her contempt, is also used here in this passage by Ibsen to portray Hedda s
desperation. That Hedda would turn to Tesman, a person she dislikes and views as beneath her, as
a means of escape, is a clear indication of her despondency and madness, which foreshadow her
ultimate act of despair suicide. Yet Tesman thoughtlessly

The Romantic Movement Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein

century, the Romantic movement, being as popular as ever, was clearly evident in Shelley s
writings. Shelley s mom, an active feminist, died during childbirth, leaving Mary to grow up with a
radical political philosopher and novelist, William Godwin, as her father. Victor Frankenstein
, the
main character, has a strong desire for the pursuit of knowledge, which he eventually learns is
more harmful than helpful. The creature of the story, who remains nameless, is Victor s creation
who although is seen to be evil by others, actually has a pure heart. Robert Walton is the narrator
of the book, telling Frankenstein s story, who also shares his dangerous desire for knowledge. If
Mary Shelley s 1818 novel, Frankenstein, has survived for nearly 200 years, it may be due to the
historical context of the romantic movement, the way that the story stems from the author s own
personal life, and the characters who portray the idea that knowledge may be treacherous.
Frankenstein was written in the 19th century, a time for new creative ideas. During this century, the

Miley Cyrus s Original Image Essay
As Miley Cyrus s audience matured she purposefully changed her image by creating a new star
text that was the polar opposite of her previous. A star text is considered to be everything that we
associate with a start, including their promotion and body of work. Her hit sitcom Hannah Montana
built her previous brand identity that connected with her audience of adolescent children. Miley s
original image was known for being a sweet and innocent teenage girl. Now her current start text
identifies with heartbreak, drugs, activism and nonconformity. The extreme change of start text
shocked and dismayed individuals. Many social media users and celebrity journalist wrote the
transformation off implying it as a lost girl in her twenties making mistakes she will eventually
regret. Despite the negative comments, Miley has embraced her star text using it for free publicity
and media attention. Despite Miley Cyruss claims that her controversial change was not for reward
or fame. Her old star text became mundane to mainstream media and her maturing audience,
compelling her to reinvent her star text in order to continue being famous and successful in the
music industry.
To illustrate, many still remember Miley Cyrus as the sweet pop star and down to earth character
from her role as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. At some point many fans believed that the
personality of Miley Cyrus corresponded to her role on Hannah Montana. In her honest interviews

Clothing Choices In Historical Films
When a film claims to faithfully portray historical events, it becomes open to a variety of
criticisms: are the clothing choices appropriate for the time? What about choices in dialogue? And
perhaps most importantly, how accurately are the aforementioned events depicted? Generally
speaking, historical dramas are judged more harshly than other genres; as when real people and
their documented actions are subject to interpretation by the viewer, it is easy for the nuances and
subtleties of society many years ago to appear foreign to modern eyes. However, when a film
acknowledges the archaic nature of its subject and seeks to make it more accessible to newer eyes,
it must be careful to still remain true to historical events.
The 2006 film Marie Antoinette (directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst in the titular
role) is one such film that sought to modernise its subject. A retelling of the life of France s most

My research interests lie in cell signaling, and more broadly, in sensory processing. My interest in
cell signaling has evolved from early studies I conducted on the human A1 adenosine receptor

determining those amino acidresidues within the fifth transmembrane spanning region of the
hA1AR that were accessible from the ligand binding crevice using the substituted cysteine

receptor by mutating single amino acids in the targeted GPCR region to cysteine. So altered

(GFP) expressing transgenic nematode. I cloned the par6 gene from an existing C. elegans cDNA
library and fused the product to GFP. I also performed in vitro pull down and in vitro kinase assays
to determine whether Par 6 protein complexes with proteins implicated in calcium signaling.
Most recently I performed research to identify key proteins involved in the termination of the

Parkinson s disease is a disease with a wide variety of disabilities recognizable as changes in
appearance, posture, walking, and balance. In 1817, the English physician James Parkinson
described these symptoms in his patients and has had his name become synonymous with the
disease. In 1893 the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia was identified as an area of disease for
Parkinson s. Examination with the naked eye reveals a lack of black pigment in this portion of the

Consequently, both the basal ganglia and the cerebellum are influenced by and return influence to
the descending motor pathways (pyramidal and extrapyramidal), which affect the activity of the

The substantia nigra is a subcortical nucleus that is closely related to basal ganglia. It is reciprocally
connected with the striatum and sends efferents to the ventral anterior and dorsomedial thalamic
nuclei and, to some extent, to the ventral lateral thalamic nuclei. The substantia nigra pars reticulata
also projects to the superior colliculus. Neurons that originate in the striatum and project to the
substantia nigra are inhibitory and utilize the neurotransmitters GABA and substance P. Fibers that
arise in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra use the neurotransmitter dopamine and synapse in
the striatum, while GABAminergic cells in the pars reticulata receive striatal input and project to
the thalamus.
Recordings from neurons in the basal ganglia of monkeys during various motor tasks reveal that the

Simplified Evolution Model Of The Genetic Landscape
Figure 10: Simplified evolution model of the genetic landscape in melanoma development and
progression30. In sequence, melanoma formation is initiated by activating mutation in BRAF from
the ERK MAPK pathway, which induces senescence forming a nevus. Mutation of TERT
promoter, which increases transcriptional activity, as well as disruption of cell cycle control that
abrogates cell cycle arrest (elevated levels observed in melanomain situ) are events that allows the
bypass of OIS mechanism proceeding towards melanoma transformation. Copy number alteration
(CNA) is observed exclusively in invasive malignant melanoma alongside mutations in p53 and
PTEN tumor suppressors suggesting that these alterations are important in the event of cancercell
invasion and dissemination. Mutation burden, specifically point mutations (indicative of UVR
damage) increases throughout progression. Frequency of the driver oncogenes remains constant
throughout tumor progression.

Surgical removal is the standard treatment for localized primary melanomas. Localized melanomas
are exceedingly curable when removed properly within the recommended excision margins

The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Analysis
Giovanni di Paolo s The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise is currently in the National
Gallery of Art in Washington DC, was finished in 1435 CE, and is made of tempera on panel. This
Sienese panel from the start of the Italian Renaissance is believed to be one of five from the lower
part of the altarpiece. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate
architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray
the importance of the religious context. His personal artistic stylization, the experimentation of the
Italian Renaissancebut still firmly painting with Medieval Pictorial Tradition, and the use of
symbolism can also demonstrate the religious meaning of the piece. Furthermore, in the context of
Giovanni di Paolo s The Annunciationand Expulsion from Paradise, the conversation between
monetary and cultural value and the controversy of art being exhibited in its country of origin will
be discussed.
Giovanni di Paolo gained distinction in the Sienese School of painting in the Gothic style.
Believed to use a style book for reference while painting, Giovanni di Paolo was extremely
influenced by Trecento and Quattrocento Italian artists. He started by mimicking other artists like
Gentile da Fabriano, but developed his own experimentation with religious pieces later on in his
life. Although he copied the concepts in his earlier works, like the Raising of Lazarus by Duccio,
his scenes were more lively, vivid, and realistically represented. Later in his life, Giovanni became
skilled in painting illuminated manuscripts, which are recognized today because the early
influences of the Italian Renaissance are present in his depiction of naturalism, like his experimental
linear perspective in The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise. Like all artists in the early
Italian Renaissance, Giovanni only painted religious narratives correlating to the Catholic
influences. Uniformed biblical narratives that most could understand were sought after, so schools
and monasteries taught artists and those artists were later commissioned by Catholic churches. The
lack of other means for patronage lead to strict representation of religious art as

Architecture Of The Colosseum
Once the Colosseum had been built, it seems to have become the model for many, if not most, of
those that followed (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 24). The Colosseum stands proudly upon the
villainous Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of
Imperial Roman Architecture. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed through purpose or
function. However, this does not do justice to the importance of architecture within Roman society
(Thornton and Thornton in Lyes 1999, 2). The functions, whether it be religious or otherwise, of the
Colosseumwere irrelevant to the ultimate design of the architecture, as the architectural features
contained within the Colosseum s ultimate design created an instant archetype, a marker of
Romanness across the empire (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 25). The clever use of the classical orders
and façades, and adaptation of existing Roman architecture of the period allowed the Colosseum
to become a model for many subsequent Roman amphitheatres, whilst showing the ingenuity of
Roman architecture of the period.
The architectural vocabulary of the Colosseum saw the clever use of existing Roman design
practices to create a final structure which became a precedent for all Amphitheatres which followed.
Thus, highlighting the overriding importance of the aesthetics the ultimate design displayed. The
importance of the appearance in the final design s architecture begins with the conventions which

Before fast spreading technology was introduced, politicians had limited ways of gathering
supporters for their political agenda. Today, technology is used to spread a lot of information to
many different people around the world. Online websites play a vital role in spreading political

Facebook, Twitter, and Rock the Vote, political agendas are beginning to spread through
demographics that were harder to target before the Internet became easily accessible. These
demographics include men and women eighteen years of age and older. Over 500 million people
are active on Facebook, a social networking site where anyone can voice their opinions and ideas....

Today, people always have access to the Internet on the go, and The beauty of Twitter is that it
can be portable, allowing you to tweet from your cell phone. So when critical news breaks, your
elected official can keep you apprised of the latest developments (Orr). Since statuses and
updates come directly from the politician or celebrity themselves, Twitter is a reliable source to
people and it is not lost in translation. Although more people are tweeting every day, older
generations that cannot keep up are lacking in publicizing themselves in a political format. The
negative aspect on Twitter is that the relative newness of social networks like Twitter, make
social media strategy a nebulous affair for campaigns who aren t blessed with an intuitive grasp
of these fast paced platforms (James). Because social media is such a new concept in today s
society, many political campaign managers are still figuring it out how to use it to their advantage
in a positive way. If the candidates for office who are not used to today s technology cannot get with
the fast paced changing times of today, why would citizens want them running their country? In an
effort to attract younger audiences, celebrities such as Madonna, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Janet
Jackson have been

Impact Of Internet On Modern Corporate Business World
Impact of internet on the modern corporate business world
Information Technology and Business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don t think anybody
can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other. Bill Gates
INTRODUCTION:
The development of Information System is an extraordinary advancement in the business sectors,
thus playing an important role in revolutionizing the modern corporate business world. A wide
range of people use internet for emailing, developing databases, to gather information on various
arenas. Hence incorporating the resources of internet in business environment help in forming
business solutions like system designing, email communication, developing software apps etc.
(Granger Schroeder, 1996, p. 85). IT is currently serving a major role in all kind of business
processes. Hence a relation between IT and business can likely be compared to nervous system
and good health. Business leaders having smart senses will definitely embrace this. (McCormack,
2006, p. 2) But there are some negative impacts as well. In this essay, the impacts of internet in the
business in the disguise of emerging technologies like Web 2.0and Web 3.0, their strategic
competitive advantages will be critically evaluated and analysed. Also the benefits and drawbacks
of the internet will be compared and contrasted here.

Joanne Duff DT545 Vis Com 1st Year
Non linear narrative structures have deeply influenced how subjects are presented in visual culture.
The first movie I looked at was IrrГ©versible, a French movie written, directed and produced by
Gasper NoГ©. NoГ© employs a non linear narrative to force the audience to think about the actions
taken by those seeking vengeance before the reasons behind these actions are known. The movie is
told in reverse order, beginning with the main character murdering the person he believed brutally
attacked his girlfriend. The intention of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NoГ© places these scenes in the first half of the movie, to give us a different perspective on the
characters and their lives. The film ends with scenes depicting Marcus and Alex happy together,
which the viewer must watch while knowing exactly how things will end for them. We also learn
that the man Marcus and Pierre murdered in the gay club wasn t the man they were looking for,
we realise that Le Tenia was standing beside this man, and stood transfixed as he watch them
viciously beat the man they believed to be him. Alex is attacked by Le Tenia
The attack in the club and the rape scene are so cruel and graphic that they are rendered almost
unwatchable, which is how NoГ© intended them to be. The violence is unglamorised and gritty;
the rape scene is completely non sexual and uncomfortably long. The non linear narrative of
IrrГ©versible is what makes the movie interesting, if the movie story was told in a linear way it
wouldn t create the same interest in the lives of the characters. We wouldn t feel the same about
happy characters whose lives are ruined as we would about something terrible happening to the
characters and then to watch them living happily oblivious to the events that will ruin their lives.
He presents us the events in an order which makes us think about the nature of these events in a
different way.

Examples Of Secrecy In Frankenstein
The well being of a family is often the result of absolute trust and absence of secrecy, in
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the reader can observe how secrecy between family members can
lead to catastrophic events where there is no way back. Victor Frankenstein keeps the monster, his
creation, a secret, making himself guilty of every occurrence involving him and driving himself to
a very complicated situation. When the Frankensteinfamily is betrayed by Victor it generates a
feelingof agony in Victor which will drive him to do everything he can to reconcile with himself
and his family.
At Justine s trial, Victor begins to feel the absence of hope because of the idea that by his own
actions he is going to be responsible for the death of two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When Victor hears this he feels terrible, saying During this conversation I had retired to a corner
of the prison room, where I could conceal the horrid anguish that possessed me. Despair!(...)I
gnashed my teeth and ground them together, uttering a groan that came from my inmost soul
(Shelley 72). Victor is in agony, the recent events have put him in a situation where he has no
feelings of hope for a positive ending. What Justine said had a very negative effect on him, he is in
complete mental suffering because he feels guilty for his family misfortune. When Justine died
Victor fell into a state of remorse and despair, he begins to sense feelings of resentmenttowards the
monster and also the need to go after him for redemption and reconciliation after the evil he has
created, Victor says When I reflected on his crimes and malice, my hatred and revenge burst all
bounds of moderation. I would have made a pilgrimage to the highest peak of the Andes, could I
when there have precipitated him to their base. I wished to see him again, that I might wreak the
utmost extent of abhorrence on his head and avenge the deaths of William and Justine (Shelley,
76). Certainly Victor is devastated by what has happened and he has felled into a state of misery
and torment due to the fact that he is just as guilty as the monster of the murderers, and likewise
that he is

My blankets have finally accepted me as one of their own and if I leave now I might lose their

Analysis Of Casey At The Bat
Casey at the bat The author of Casey at the Bat uses humor all throughout the poem. He does this
to discribe Caseys experience. There are multiple examples all throughout the poem. The first
example is in paragraph four when the author writes There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a
hugging third. This is an example because it uses a hyberbolie when he says Flynn a hugging
third. Flynn is not actually hugging third base. the author is simple trying to imply that there is
alot of pressure on Casey. the second example is in paragraph ten when the pitcher throws the ball
and Casey says That ain t mt style, this shows

The Hudson Super Six Analysis
The Hudson Super Six is the Joad Family and the Joad Family is the Hudson Super Six. The two
are one and without the other neither would run. Old fashioned, reliable and slightly worn, the
Hudson Super Six journeys across the country. Passing through uncaring towns and stopping among
equally unfortunate vehicles, the car preservers toward California. The Joad Family, much like the
car they travel in, encounters unsympathetic people across the country meanwhile associating with
fellow Okies. The Hudson and the Family brush with complications and fortune. Both fail and
succeed.
Previously in the novel, when the Hudson breaks down a considerable amount of work must be put
into fixing it. Likewise when Grampa and Granma die, the Family puts

La Vida Por PerГіn Research Paper
La Vida por PerГіn . The crowd of a million and a half shouted these words, not for one minute, but
for several (Fraser and Navarso, 152). La vida por PerГіn are among many of Eva PerГіn s last
words, before her death on July 26th, 1952, but not among the first words she has used to promote
Juan PerГіnand PerГіnism in Argentina. Juan PerГіn is arguably one of the most well known
presidents of Argentina and his movement, the PerГіnist movement, has played a very important
role in Argentina s political history over the late 1940s to the early 1960s, and has inspired many
current political parties in Argentina ( PerГіnist ). Many who identify themselves as PerГіnistas and

women should have rights and even while visiting Spain she spoke to its women and said, This
century will not go down in history as the Century of World Wars nor even as the century of
Atomic Disintegration but rather as the Century of Victorious Feminism! ( To Be Evita Part II ).
Although Evita was not fully correct in thinking that her century would only be known as the
Century of Victorious Feminism , it is evident that feminism was one of her passions, and in many
ways her promotion of feministic ideals would help PerГіn and his political party show that they
were more modern in their thinking and different from the parties that were elected before them.In
order to promote the benefits of female empowerment, Evita began speaking to the senate, leaders
of the PerГіnista bloc, and legislators about her goaland starting on Wednesday, January 27th,

  • 2. Jeffrey Bauman s Heroism In The Film Stronger IntroductionThe film Stronger (2015) based on the memoir of Jeffrey Bauman directed by David Green, focuses on his life after losing his legs in the Boston Marathon bombings. In the early scenes of Stronger, the movie shows Bauman s life of recovery and adaptation to living as a disabled man. Bauman becomes a symbol of hope and inspiration to the people after the bombing. Bauman comes home to his mother and sees tons of care packages and thank you letters from people who believe he is an inspiring hero. The day of the Boston marathon, he was waiting for his girlfriend to cross the finish line while standing a couple inches away from one of the bombs. After the blast, he becomes one of the most recognizable survivors because of a photo that went viral. The iconic image shows rescuers saving him thereby depicting him as incapable. Director Green shows us the incapability of Bauman and how he needs to rely on others while portraying him as the hero of disabled people. The film shows the pleasant side of the protagonist Bauman s life after his injury while, showing the unwanted aspect of being disabled. • 3. How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by Levi can be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest. Although Levi is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully grasp how Nietzschean philosophy could view these events. First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . In chapter 5, Useless Violence , Levi concludes that the inhuman Nazi hierarchy spread its inhumanity from the top to all aspects of its regime (Levi pg 112). Along these lines he acknowledges that this inhumanity spreads downwards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to their problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects the public s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the Lagers but through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst the prisoners. Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners ressentiment onto other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive aspect of slave morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of Nazis after the war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts that the accused relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the self deception in slave morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s philosophy led to his morals becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him to lose touch with reality (Levi pg 106, 107). He also reflects on the fact that Nietzsche never desired the suffering of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Examples Of Colonialism In A Passage To India In A Passage to India, the colonialists are definitely the stronger race and have authority over the locals. This authority gives them power which they use against the inferior race, the Indians (Boehmer 1995: 10). The Indians are considered weak, outcast, and second rate. They are believed to be different from Europeans, especially the English. Even though the British might have their own different categories like social class and religions, they are united as opposed to the local natives (Boehmer 1995: 67). There is very little social integration between the colonialists and the Indians. Yet there are incidents in the novel that show that the Indians are more sophisticated than the colonialists. Only mutual respect and esteem can enable them to socialize with each other. The British feel that it vital for them to stick to the unwritten rules on how they behave towards the locals. It highlights the bonding among human behaviour in organizational settings, the individual organization interface, the organization, the environment surrounding the organization. In an organization each and every individual brings its own experience, managerial and effective skills. Classical Organizational theory: Popovich (2010) said that in this theory, the concentration mainly goes in how an organization can be structured in effective manner. These three are believed to be major contributors of organization theory, Henri Fayol, Lyndall Urwick Max Weber. But they all given same form of structure which was Bureaucratic. Organizational behaviour plays an integral role in organization s progress, economic growth, and productive results . Those people who work in organization, they are literally born in there educated in organizations. They also learn and grab most of their material possessions from organizations and die as members of organizations. Majority of our activities are regulated by organizations, called governments. • 7. Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Section I On October 23, 1983, a massive explosion from a 19 ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241 servicemen (including 220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known non nuclear explosion since World War II and was the bloodiest day since Iowa Jima, according to Rick Hampson writing in USA Today. The Marines had been sent to Lebanon as peace keepers, trying to bring some peace to a civil war that was ongoing in Lebanon. Military observers subsequent to that horrific event have suggested that this terrorist assault was the beginning of the reign of terror that radical Islamic would continue to perpetrate on Americans through the next twenty years. Hampson explains that the bloody attack on American servicemen was ...a seminal moment on a timeline that led to the 9/11 attacks, to the war the U.S. waged in Afghanistan (Hampson, 2008). • 8. Creek Scientific Paper Exploring Freshwater Streams: Cherry Creek and Bear Creek Trisha McNiff BIOL 2081В005 Tucker 04/23/2013 Introduction On April 6th 2013, our Biology II lab evaluated the health of two freshwater streams in the Denver area. Both creeks flow to the South Platte River but are situated in different environments (urban and suburban) which cause variance in biotic and abiotic indicators of stream health. The presence or absence of bioindicators is dependent on the water chemistry. Through the study of stream health, we can gain insight on the stress that humans cause to freshwater habitats. I think that Bear Creek is healthier than Cherry Creek because it is in a less urban environment and is less affected by human influences. If the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bioindicators of stream health include blackfly larvae, caddisflies, and algae. The presence of blackfly larvae indicates sewage pollution. Caddisflies indicate higher O2 concentrations. The presences of algae can indicate different things. If algae is absent, there may not be enough nutrients to support its growth. Thick algae indicates eutrophication. Previous studies by the Colorado Department of Health Water Quality Control Commission in 1981 show comparable amounts of dissolved O2 as well as pH, nitrite, and nitrate levels in both Cherry and Bear creek. The NH 3 levels were much higher in Cherry Creek at .10 mg/L compared to Bear creek where the NH 3 levels were at .06 mg/L (Colorado 1981). In today s society, it is important to find a balance between preserving the natural ecosystem and accommodating the wants, needs, and desires of the humans who affect it. (Meyer 1997). Pollution is inevitable but should be considered and kept as low as reasonably achievable. Materials and Methods The following procedures were carried out carried out at both Cherry Creek and Bear Creek 04/06/2013. The epic poem Beowulf was passed down verbally from generation to generation with enlightening Pagan teachings and elements. Christian elements were not included in the poem until a Christian monk added them when it was put as written text. However, the Christian aspects collide with the Pagan elements found in the poem. Beowulfwas originally told with only Pagan elements. In the article The Essential Pagan Elements in Beowulf , it explains Pagan elements included in the story such as dragons and magic. Things such as magic, unnatural creatures, and strange scenarios play a huge role in their faith. However, Christians believe that things such as dragons, witches, magic and the dark arts are of Satan. While the Pagans view the dragon as a fire breathing, greedy creature keeping treasure in its lair, the Christians view it as the devil making the setting of hell. The equivalent of Beowulf in the Christian faith would be Jesus Christ. He came into the world (lair) and freed us from sins (hell). Pagans view Beowulf as having superhuman powers that let him overcome any trial he may face. For example of Beowulf s strength, he lifted the giant s magical sword when nobody else could. His strength is matched by Christian faith with the story of Jesus was resurrected and came out from the tomb he was buried in. Beowulf fought for peace in the land of Geatland and Danes. Christ made peace with everyone. They both share qualities of the desire for peace. The biggest comparison between Beowulf and Jesus Christ is when they both died to save other people. According to Christian belief, Christ was crucified to save everyone from death. Beowulf was killed by the dragon in order to save someone else and to calm his soul from the loss of his village. Christ also found his true followers when he was carrying the cross and they came to help him. But the freezing rain kept coming. The story, What Happened During the Ice Storm by Jim Heynen, is about farm boys going to collect pheasants in the middle of a raging ice storm. Every animal was safe except for the pheasants. They were frozen in place along the fence and could not see anything through the ice. After a careful analysis of the story, the reader can understand the theme, how people act in challenging situations, and human nature through imagery, diction, and figurative language. Heynen uses a lot of imagery throughout his story so people can visualize how the storm is affecting the farm boys in the situation. The narrator explains, Things around them were shining and dripping with icy rain (Heynen). The icy rain makes it more difficult to concentrate on how to handle the situation. Upon their arrival to the fence, the boys can see how the storm has taken a toll on the birds. The narrator states, Some of them lifted their heads and turned them from side to side, but they were blindfolded with ice and didn t flush (Heynen). The birds could not see anything due to ice covering their eyes. The pheasants were covered in a sheet of ice. As the reader can see, the conditions of the ice storm affected not only ... We see how Artemis especially influences culture through her history, allies, enemies, special abilities, and ties to culture. So, let s go back to our story. You draw your bow, and, shoot. You make your target, a huge monster. You keep loosing your arrows until it drops dead. You and your hunters go to celebrate the victory. In the myths we saw that when the tension rose from the individual differences they would fight, and the people with individual differences would become enemies. These stories can be fun to read, but we need to take from them that we can t just fight people when the tension rises from differences. The First Clinical Experience Of A Nurse Essay The First Clinical Experience On an early morning in April, my friends and I arrived 45 minutes early to our long term care facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three of us anxiously awaited stepping foot into the care facility as we had no idea what was to come. I began to wonder what the patients would be like and how I would care for them. Consequently, I could feel my heart pounding as I was afraid of hurting the residents and not promoting healing from their ailments. I didn t know what illnesses or diseases would place individuals in the healthcare unit in the facility. That terrified me. I wanted to know everything I could about the residents prior to stepping foot in the building, but that knowledge wasn t attainable. While trying to process my fears, I was thinking of the quote from Maya Angelou that says, As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel. This lack of knowledge scared me; however, I knew that regardless of what placed the residents on the unit, I would care for them with respect and compassion. At the beginning of this time period, England had achieved relative stability, due largely in part to Elizabeth I long and successful reign. French absolutism was largely a result of these crises and tragedies, with the country recognizing the need for a strong, powerful leader, which they found during the long and successful reign of Louis XIV. In order to seize these powers, Louis needed to create a bureaucratic system answerable only to the king. Essentially, Louis had to seize power from the hands of the nobles. Louis succeeded in creating a national tax collection process, where taxes were paid directly to the king rather then the nobles. This way, by the end of his reign, Louis was collecting 80% of the taxes due to him whereas before, with the nobles acting as middlemen, only 30% of the taxes due to the king were actually received. In order to placate the nobles, he exempted them from taxes, thus appealing to their senses while stripping them of their power. The nobles began to believe that the only way to achieve a stable and prosperous state and secure their own interests was to support Louis monarchy. Louis used much of this money to create a centralized military of professional soldiers and gradually took the military power from the individual regions. Military allegiance was due only to the king, so the danger of military rebellion was greatly reduced. Optimism In Voltaire s Candide FACT: What I found extremely fascinating in Voltaire s work is the idea that It is demonstrable that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an end, all is necessarily for the best end (83). This quote by the character Pangloss is one of extreme optimism. He believes that they are living in the best world possible and everything that happens is meant to be. This really resonates with me because I do have the belief that God has an influence over our lives, so with that being said anything that happens good or bad God had a reason for. The concept of faith is what plays a key role in this belief; we must have faith in God and what path he paves for us whether we understand it or not. This belief and teaching of Heaven is shown in the Roman Catholic Catechism #1023 Those who die in God s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live forever with Christ. They are like God for ever, for they see him as he is, face to face: This adds onto the idea that those who enter heaven and die for God are perfectly purified. It enforces the idea that you must be pure before you can enter. This belief is further followed up in the sacred texts and scriptures of Roman Catholicism in Matthew 18:3. Even before its release, Selmareceived backlash from critics who claimed it falsely depicted Lyndon B. Regardless of such claims, the film, Selma, does depict a historical event set forth by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965. During this time period, racial segregation was prominent, especially in the southern states. The government justified such segregation based on the 14th Amendment s wording of separate but equal . However, many African Americans were dissatisfied and demanded true equality. It was not until the mid 1960 s, after Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, that racial tension began to decline. Through this stage direction, Ibsen highlights the objectification of women. In many aspects, George Tesman too does not see Hedda s full value as a person, and from the beginning of the play, Ibsen makes this clear. Tesman adores rather than love his wife, proudly viewing her as an object of adornment that makes several of his friends jealous. A scholar who is more devoted to his work than his wife, Tesman spends more time with his books than his wife, even during their honeymoon. In this passage, Ibsen further illustrates this objectification of women. Tesman turns his head away from her because he believes there is nothing in the world (32) that Hedda can help Tesman with; Hedda is merely an ornament and not of real use to Tesman. Ibsen s use of stage direction that depicts Tesman turning his head after talking to Hedda both indicate Tesman s rejection of Hedda as a valuable person and his obliviousness to Hedda and her desperate situation. Tesman s imperceptiveness is further highlighted by Ibsen when Hedda imitates Tesman s intonation (16). Also, Hedda s mimicking of Tesman, which is used earlier in the play as a sign of her contempt, is also used here in this passage by Ibsen to portray Hedda s desperation. In April 1776 North Carolina s provincial congress met at Halifax and decided to send a message to the Continental Congress. These Halifax Resolves were the first official action by any colony calling for a united drive for independence. Now there was no turning back. • 29. The Romantic Movement Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay To mould me Man, did I solicit thee From darkness to promote me? (Important Quotes Explained). With Frankenstein being written in the early 19th century, the Romantic movement, being as popular as ever, was clearly evident in Shelley s writings. Shelley s mom, an active feminist, died during childbirth, leaving Mary to grow up with a radical political philosopher and novelist, William Godwin, as her father. Victor Frankenstein , the main character, has a strong desire for the pursuit of knowledge, which he eventually learns is more harmful than helpful. The creature of the story, who remains nameless, is Victor s creation who although is seen to be evil by others, actually has a pure heart. Robert Walton is the narrator of the book, telling Frankenstein s story, who also shares his dangerous desire for knowledge. If Mary Shelley s 1818 novel, Frankenstein, has survived for nearly 200 years, it may be due to the historical context of the romantic movement, the way that the story stems from the author s own personal life, and the characters who portray the idea that knowledge may be treacherous. Frankenstein was written in the 19th century, a time for new creative ideas. During this century, the Romantic movement become very prominent. What about choices in dialogue? And perhaps most importantly, how accurately are the aforementioned events depicted? Generally speaking, historical dramas are judged more harshly than other genres; as when real people and their documented actions are subject to interpretation by the viewer, it is easy for the nuances and subtleties of society many years ago to appear foreign to modern eyes. However, when a film acknowledges the archaic nature of its subject and seeks to make it more accessible to newer eyes, it must be careful to still remain true to historical events. My interest in cell signaling has evolved from early studies I conducted on the human A1 adenosine receptor (hA1AR). In this first exposure to G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling, I aided in determining those amino acidresidues within the fifth transmembrane spanning region of the hA1AR that were accessible from the ligand binding crevice using the substituted cysteine accessibility method (SCAM). Utilization of SCAM entailed modification of the native hA1AR receptor by mutating single amino acids in the targeted GPCR region to cysteine. Most recently I performed research to identify key proteins involved in the termination of the signaling pathway of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGCs). The distinctive photoreceptive properties exhibited by ipRGCs are due to the activity of the GPCR, melanopsin, which is expressed in these cells. Consequently, both the basal ganglia and the cerebellum are influenced by and return influence to the descending motor pathways (pyramidal and extrapyramidal), which affect the activity of the lower motoneurons. The substantia nigra is a subcortical nucleus that is closely related to basal ganglia. It is reciprocally connected with the striatum and sends efferents to the ventral anterior and dorsomedial thalamic nuclei and, to some extent, to the ventral lateral thalamic nuclei. The substantia nigra pars reticulata also projects to the superior colliculus. Neurons that originate in the striatum and project to the substantia nigra are inhibitory and utilize the neurotransmitters GABA and substance P. Fibers that arise in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra use the neurotransmitter dopamine and synapse in the striatum, while GABAminergic cells in the pars reticulata receive striatal input and project to the thalamus. Recordings from neurons in the basal ganglia of monkeys during various motor tasks reveal that the discharge of single cells in the neostriatum show a direct correlation with movements of the contralateral arm or leg, and that the discharge of substantial percentage of neurons precedes the onset of a movement. In sequence, melanoma formation is initiated by activating mutation in BRAF from the ERK MAPK pathway, which induces senescence forming a nevus. Mutation of TERT promoter, which increases transcriptional activity, as well as disruption of cell cycle control that abrogates cell cycle arrest (elevated levels observed in melanomain situ) are events that allows the bypass of OIS mechanism proceeding towards melanoma transformation. Copy number alteration (CNA) is observed exclusively in invasive malignant melanoma alongside mutations in p53 and PTEN tumor suppressors suggesting that these alterations are important in the event of cancercell invasion and dissemination. Mutation burden, specifically point mutations (indicative of UVR damage) increases throughout progression. Frequency of the driver oncogenes remains constant throughout tumor progression. 9. Localized melanomas are exceedingly curable when removed properly within the recommended excision margins (maximum 2cm according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines for melanoma). The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Analysis Giovanni di Paolo s The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, was finished in 1435 CE, and is made of tempera on panel. This Sienese panel from the start of the Italian Renaissance is believed to be one of five from the lower part of the altarpiece. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. His personal artistic stylization, the experimentation of the Italian Renaissancebut still firmly painting with Medieval Pictorial Tradition, and the use of symbolism can also demonstrate the religious meaning of the piece. Furthermore, in the context of Giovanni di Paolo s The Annunciationand Expulsion from Paradise, the conversation between monetary and cultural value and the controversy of art being exhibited in its country of origin will be discussed. Giovanni di Paolo gained distinction in the Sienese School of painting in the Gothic style. Believed to use a style book for reference while painting, Giovanni di Paolo was extremely influenced by Trecento and Quattrocento Italian artists. He started by mimicking other artists like Gentile da Fabriano, but developed his own experimentation with religious pieces later on in his life. Although he copied the concepts in his earlier works, like the Raising of Lazarus by Duccio, his scenes were more lively, vivid, and realistically represented. Later in his life, Giovanni became skilled in painting illuminated manuscripts, which are recognized today because the early influences of the Italian Renaissance are present in his depiction of naturalism, like his experimental linear perspective in The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise. Like all artists in the early Italian Renaissance, Giovanni only painted religious narratives correlating to the Catholic influences. Uniformed biblical narratives that most could understand were sought after, so schools and monasteries taught artists and those artists were later commissioned by Catholic churches. The lack of other means for patronage lead to strict representation of religious art as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Colosseum stands proudly upon the villainous Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of Imperial Roman Architecture. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed through purpose or function. However, this does not do justice to the importance of architecture within Roman society (Thornton and Thornton in Lyes 1999, 2). The functions, whether it be religious or otherwise, of the Colosseumwere irrelevant to the ultimate design of the architecture, as the architectural features contained within the Colosseum s ultimate design created an instant archetype, a marker of Romanness across the empire (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 25). The clever use of the classical orders and façades, and adaptation of existing Roman architecture of the period allowed the Colosseum to become a model for many subsequent Roman amphitheatres, whilst showing the ingenuity of Roman architecture of the period. The architectural vocabulary of the Colosseum saw the clever use of existing Roman design practices to create a final structure which became a precedent for all Amphitheatres which followed.
