demand of rice. In the short run the price of rice will rise and the demand curve of

Hand washing is an easy and effective way to help prevent infection. Hand hygiene is
done frequently throughout the day at ChildServe. This paper will explore the non
compliance of performing hand hygiene to maximize its effectiveness of infection
prevention, and the proper ways to do so. It will also discuss how this practice is

This article explores the non compliance among practitioners and the negative
effects from it. Hand hygiene non compliance may increase patient mortality and
morbidity rates, and raise healthcare costs (Mortell, 2012, p. 1011). Multiple
infection prevention and control programs to improve hand hygiene among staff
have been utilized and yet these all appear to have failed to achieve the required
and desired compliance in hand hygiene (Mortell, 2012, p. 1011). Throughout the
whole article Mortell emphasizes that hand hygiene evidence and advice has been
continuously disregarded by clinicians. We have all seen educated and
knowledgeable clinicians fail to practice their organization s hand hygiene
recommendations. One possible explanation for this is that there is an ethical gap
(Mortell, 2012, p. 1012). This article discusses a study on hand hygiene
compliance for 2010 and 2011 in a cardiac surgical intensive care unit; which was
measured by observational surveillance and audited daily. During the first year of
the study, the nurses in that unit provided the doctors and other paramedical staff
with continual education of the WHO (2009) recommendations, training and
observational surveillance feedback. By doing so, hand hygiene compliance was
maintained at greater than 70% (Mortell, 2012, p. 1012). During the following
year, doctors were not receptive to nursing requests to comply with WHO
requirements, which made the nurses stop providing ongoing support to doctors as
they had in 2010. The outcome observed was that physician compliance fell to 60%
or less (Mortell, 2012, p. 1012). Only the nurses and paramedics kept up with
compliance of greater than 80% because of ongoing education, observation, feedback
and a genuine belief in the benefits of hand hygiene to patient safety (Mortell, 2012,

Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us
About the Art of Persuasion is a title written by the not so famous, (but extremely
well versed) Jay Heinrichs. Although the title is indeed a mouthful, it serves its
purpose in drawing the reader in. Also; the extremely long title is a little hint of what
Heinrichs entails in his book, an endless supply of information on how to correctly
and influentially utilize rhetoric, the art of persuasion.
The book is divided into five sections, each one being subdivided into different
strategies on how to use rhetoric to your advantage, in any given situation.

premise, or principle of the argument. The example given was Fan: The Cowboys

False Choice. False choice is the many questions fallacy, in which two or more

An open letter to friends and family:
A Brief Intro/Background
This letter will no doubt be hard for many of you to read, I empathize as it was also
hard to write. I beg your patience and hope you read through to the end. What I
would like to convey to you is my recent shift in world view. That is to say that I
recently came to realize that I am an atheist.
This is likely shocking to most of you. Let me be clear by what I intend to convey by
identifying as such. I do not mean to say I am opposed to religion, or claim there is
no God. I still identify very much with LDS culture and attend church regularly.
Rather, I identify as an atheist as a way to convey that I seem to have lost Faith
that there is a God. Over the last year I have studied and ponder in depth to
discover as best I could truth. Before I get there I want to be clear as to the
perspective in which I am coming from.
I was raised in a very active and loving family of the LDS Church. My family is
still very active, my father and my mother have served in leadership roles. They
are both full of faith and charity and am grateful for their love and support
throughout my life. I, myself have served in leadership roles in the church both as a
young man and as a missionary for the church. I served a 2 year mission in west
Texas spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ as I understood it. I was married in an LDS
temple to my wonderful wife. My in laws are also very devout members of the LDS
church.

The second installment of the video series Rx for Survival, concerned itself with
implications pertaining to bacteria that have become antibiotic resistant and was
titled Rise of the Superbugs. The video presented the cases of individuals who were
afflicted with maladies resulting from bacterial infections that were not being
impeded by the normative pharmaceutical care that we have used for many decades
and take for granted.

Further, it was relayed that multiple drug resistant tuberculosis is being seen in
impoverished areas, which are prime disease transmission vectors owing to people
living in close proximity, and this is complicated by the ease at which the bacteria
pass through the air (Rx for Survival, 2005). With this in mind, I think that our lives
would be significantly altered if most disease causing bacteria developed resistance to
drug treatments. It seems highly likely that initially, there would be a significant
mortality in the world s human populous due to our proximal living conditions and
travel proclivities. Aside from this, humanity would be forced to regard every
individual as a potential untreatable disease carrier, which by necessity, would
preclude unprotected contact with people whose health status is unknown.
This video provided a stark look at a serious problem that faces us on the disease
front, and it also lent a glimpse into a real possibility that looms over mankind:
being thrust back to the time when we were powerless to stop bacterial infections.
Scientific research may be our best hope to find new antibiotics capable of warding
off pathogenic bacteria for a number of decades, until once again, they become
