Part 2:Outline of the Book
(150)Section 1: The Dig
In Chapter 1: The Saudi Arabia of Coal, Goodell (2006) defines the coal mining industry as a
foundation for the life cycle of coal mining and production in Gillette, Wyoming, the Saudi Arabia
of coal production in the United States, 40% of American coal is produced in Wyoming s Powder
River basin (p.4).
In Chapter 2: Coal Colonies, Goodell (2006) describes the poverty, corporate exploitation, and
other difficulties of mining life under the Massey Energy Corporation in West Virginia. These coal
mining colonies show the power of corporate dominance over miners, the local ecology, and coal
production.
In Chapter 3: Dogholes and Chapter 4: The Carbon Express, Goodall (2007) defines the dirty
methods of coal mining and the environmental danger that coal mining brings to the ecology. More
so, Goodell exposes the glamorous depiction of coal mining by corporate executives and politicians.
Section 2: The Burn
In Chapter 4: Infinite Needs, Goodell (2006) defines the historical rise of Thomas Edison s coal

Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman...
Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign
or otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency,
parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31).
In Roald Dahls Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against
violence as both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these
imperfect parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self.
The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling
misunderstood and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which
leaves Coraline struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl
4), Matilda is both blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave
knowledge, it is her intellect that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy
her parents and everyday walk to the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the
librarian, when she tells her of her mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my
father (10). With this statement Matilda shows how her parents have neglected to foster her
intellect. Matilda s eagerness to digest information, and the fact that the only book in the
Wormwood home is her mother s cookbook, elaborates how she differs from her parents.

The Life Of Superman Saves Seven Children
Thinking back to my admittedly privileged childhood, the most vivid memory I had wasn t of
my first dance recital, or my first lacrosse game, or even my first fist fight that I won against my
seventh grade bully. It wasn t even of the day when my father was brutally murdered in front of
my sister and I when we were thirteen. No, the most evocative memory I had was the day I
purchased the newspaper for my parents at age twelve and saw, sprawled across the cover, the
headline that changed my life forever.
SUPERMAN SAVES SEVEN CHILDREN; PRAISED AS HERO ONCE MORE.
That day, I took my alarmingly large amount of allowance, went down to the novelty store across
the road, and bought sixty seven dollars worth of Superman merchandise. I came home with six
comic books, three old newspapers, an action figure, a skimpy tank top that made its way to
college with me before being puked all over, and a notepad that would later fuel my journalistic
obsession to become as great as Lois Lane, Superman s girl of choice.
A month after acquiring that first newspaper for my parents, my father left the world with a bullet
hole placed cleanly in the center of both eyes.
Soon after my Superman obsession began to dwindle in my first year of college, the masked hero
Batman faced off with his archenemy and made headlines in Gotham, where I attended school. So I
traded in my Superman shorts for a Batman shirt and went searching for him on the streets at night,
desperate.
Late in my third year of

Building the Ultimate Team in Fifa 14 Essay
Building a good team on Ultimate team in Fifa 14 is something that many people don t know how

Chemistry is determined by a player s relationship with the players around him. This depends on
if the two players share the same nation, club, or league. Two players share a dead link, which
will be represented with a red link, it mean the two players have different nationalities, different
clubs, and different leagues giving them no chemistry together. A weak link, which will be
represented with a orange link, means the two players have the same nationality and different
leagues or if they are from the same league, but different clubs. A strong link, which is
represented by a green link, means the two players with the same nationality and league but
different clubs or if it s between two players from the same club. These links will form a individual
chemistry of a player, and the total chemistry is all of the players individual chemistry added up.
The best possible chemistry is 10 for each player which will add up to 100.

Introduction
Any business organization s goal is to improve its operational performance. Through the
employment of various types of performance measures, firms can assess the efficiency and
effectiveness of their business process objectives. Furthermore, performance measurement tools can
help businesses in evaluating their resource allocation processes in order to determine how

The BSC takes forethought. It is not a tool you can just think up one night to solve a problem.
Instead, it is recommended that you hold a meeting to plan out what goals you would like to see
your company reach in each of the four above areas. Once you have clearly stated objectives, you
can then begin to break down these objectives in what you will need, financially, to bring these
objectives to fruition. 2. While the BSC gives you an overall view of the four areas for concern in
business growth and development, these four areas do not paint the whole picture. The financial
information included on the scorecard is limited. Instead, to be successfully implemented, the
balanced scorecard must be part of a bigger strategy for company growth that includes meticulous
accounting methods. 3. Many companies use metrics that are not applicable to their own situation.
It is vitally important when using balanced scorecards to make the information being tracked
applicable to your needs. Otherwise, the metrics will be meaningless. 4.

Strategic management is a long process that is not limited to making good plans; most of today s
strategic management challenges stem from the areas of implementations; it s obvious from many
financial scandals, and company failures, leading to acquisitions and downsizing, that those firms

Closing Out False Flag Tickets
closing out false flag tickets. This allowed the team to focus its efforts back on its primary ticket
load, improving overall customer service as time to resolve tickets decreased. Analytical
Aspirations In October of 2015, ETS began an effort to extrapolate more meaning from the data.
The need for advanced analytics, and proactive solutions to problems became a central focus for
the organization. Over 150,000 tickets were analyzed for textual similarities. Alerts that
automatically generate tickets were a key finding, since each type of alert had similar ticket
descriptions. Tickets were then categorized and grouped by the type of alert the ticket was
representative of. As of 2016, ETS has successfully categorized over 200,000 incidents into over
80 distinct categories. ETS uses these categories to trend out tickets over time, and see what
common issues impact applications, servers, network devices, and databases. For example, in
January of 2016, it was identified that there was a sudden increase in alerts for low disk space
on the C drives of servers running the Windows 2008 operating system. We compiled the data
into a report, which was then presented to the leading manager of the Windows Server Support
team, who then had their team investigate the issue. It was then decided to increase the amount of
C drive space on the impacted servers. Their process was also updated to increase the amount of
memory allocated to the C drive on new server builds. The use of

Anabolic Steroids And Substance Steroids
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary anabolic steroids are any of a group of usually
synthetic hormones that are derivatives of testosterone, are used medically specially to promote
tissue growth, and are sometimes abused by athletes to increase the size and strength of their
muscles and improve endurance. The main purpose of anabolic steroids is to gain strength and
muscle very quickly and faster than any other drug enhancement. There are many types of
models that relate to anabolic steroids. One model is high school athletes who use anabolic
steroids and would mostly fall in the performance enhancer model category. Many may ask, what
exactly are performance enhancement drugs? Performance enhancement drugs are substances
used to improve any form of activity performance in humans. There are many experiments done
on the use of anabolic steroids within high schools. According to the Huffington Post as of
2011, 13 percent of boys who play football in high school take anabolic steroids and that is just
football players. All of these young athletes who take steroids use the drug to become stronger. An
average of 8.8 percent of female high school athletes have also tried or currently use anabolic
steroids. The crave to have a buffed body is a big trend for young adults. A study from the
University of Michigan showed that in 1992, 72 percent of high school seniors believed that those
using steroids risked harming themselves (Are Student Athletes Taking Steroids?). Just

The Second Sex By Beudie De Beauvoir Analysis
II.INTRODUCTION
Modern women are bringing down the standards and stereotypes that are put upon them by society;
but their success in breaking the stereotype and living freely in their human state is not something
that can be handed to them that easily. Women are born into a world which subordinate them to
men, making it as though their ultimate goal and destination should be marriage, which makes it
important to study their journey deliberately.
Women are given a standard and pre destined path for them to play in their lives. In the second
volume of The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir tries to describe how a woman is trained to accept
her position and what she has to go through as well as the escape mechanisms that are permitted to
her. We can then understand the problems women face and their keenness for a better tomorrow.
III.AUTHOR S PROFILE Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir, also known as

The Battle Of Elsenborn Ridge
Battle of Elsenborn Ridge
The winter in the Ardennes is very cold; American Soldiers beaten, bloodied and depleting in
numbers. Germany has massed their best Soldiers from the Twelfth SS Panzer Division fielding the
newest and deadliest Armored Fighting vehicles the world had ever seen. However, the Americans
have an ace in the hole, The United States Army Field Artillery has made some historic and very
deadly innovations. In order to defend the Northern shoulder from being overrun by the 1st SS
Panzer Corps and the 67th Corps, the 405th FA Battalion must utilize their fortified fighting
positions to capitalize on the advancing enemy, synchronize and mass their firing capability, and
utilize a newly developed secret weapon called the Proximity Fuze to prevent the German forces
from obtaining a supply through the Twin Villages.
For seven days, the Battle of Elsenborn Ridge was valorously held by the artillery forces and
Infantry forces of the United States Army. (Starmann R. , 2015). This battle was the greatest
crushing victory of the Ardennes valley and is the only part of the Battle of the Bulge line where
the Germans failed to advance. (Starmann R. , 2015). From this ridge, the United States forces
were extremely trenched in. They used the few days leading up to this battle to maneuver more
units to the ridge to help protect the Germans from securing the two villages. These villages were
critical to the Germans because without them they would not be able to resupply

The Influence Of Dragons On East Asian Culture
Dragons are prevalent in myths all across the world. Eastern countries in particular hold dragons
in the highest regard in their cultures. The dragons of East Asian legend have sweeping powers.
They breathe clouds, move the seasons, and control the waters of rivers, lakes, and seas. They are
linked with yang, the masculine principle of heat, light, and action, and opposed to yin, the
feminine principle of coolness, darkness, and repose. Dragons have been part of East Asian culture
for more than 4,000 years. In the religious traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, they
have been honored as sources of power and bringers of rain. (amnh.org)
Dragons hold more significance in China than nearly anywhere else in the world. They are
usually depicted as brightly colored snakes with legs that, in legend, can be as small as a garden
snake or large enough to connect heaven and earth. These dragons are connected to divine and
auspicious powers that typically control disasters related to water, such as floods or hurricanes.
These powers make dragons a symbol of strength and power among the Chinese people, enough so

At the end of his life, Beowulf went to fight a dragon which he killed and then died from his

these dragons became a symbol of treachery, danger, and the unknown in Europe. Unlike in Asia
however, dragons were never as completely imbedded in the culture and minds of the people.
Tolkien s works, particularly the Hobbit, brought focus back onto a legend that was beginning to

Lord Of The Flies Allegory Examples
Allegorical Meanings of LOTF.
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is basically represented by three big allegories as a whole;
Political, Historical, and Religious. The allegorical meaning for the novel differs from each
category of allegory. For political, later in the book, there are two different clashing tribes
representing a different type of government. The Historical allegory compares the main characters
such as Simon, Piggy, or Ralph to famous or infamous historical people. Lastly, the meaning of
the religious allegory is that the island is the Garden of Eden and the boys are Adam and Eve. For
each category of the three different types of allegories, the meaning of the book, Lord of The
Flies, as a whole differs. The religious allegorical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing Ralph does when he gets to the island is take off his clothes and take a bath in the
lagoon. Ralph inspected the whole thirty yards carefully and then plunged in. The water was
warmer than his blood and he might have been swimming in a huge bath. (Golding, 12) This
gesture relates to the act of Baptism and the innocence of Adam and Eve. Later in the book, the
boys become more savage than civilised trying to find the beast, or snake thing when it is really
just hiding inside of them. This is just like how Adam and Eve were fooled by the satan that
disguised himself as a serpent. The Devil figure, or the Satan is another religious allegory hidden
in Lord of The Flies. It is actually hidden right in the title. Lord of the Flies in hebrew means
Beelzebub which is another name for Satan or Devil. This name is from the Canaanite Baal
which means Lord and so he is known for lord of the flies. To expand even more, the boys on the
island are described with fly like behaviors and actions. He s Buzzed off (Golding, 55) Different

Throughout My Field Experience This Semester, I Learned
Throughout my field experience this semester, I learned a lot about literacy learners and teaching
/learning. From my final tutoring session, I learned that literacy instruction that works for one
student may not necessarily work for another and that it is important to teach literacy instruction
using a variety of techniques and strategies (Serravallo, 2015). First, I learned how important it is to
cater literacy instruction to the individual student. I have learned about many great instructional
strategies for teaching literacy but not all strategies are going to work for every student. It is
important to select strategies that build on student strengths to support the student s literacy needs
(Serravallo, 2014). I also learned that a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

We selected 5 mutual funds that have 80% of more invested in stock equity securities in the mutual
fund. The 5 mutual funds all have different investment styles according to Morningstar. The
investment objective defines what each mutual fund s long term goals are. It includes things such
as required return, the risk tolerance, and investment time horizon. The investment style is the
different strategy used to set asset allocation of the mutual fund. It sets expectations for long term
portfolio performance. For example, VTICX focuses on large blend, where HASCX focuses on
small blend; meaning that they will target different portfolio asset allocations. Each fund will
allocate its funds differently and in different proportions. The investment strategy is a set of rules,
behaviors or procedures designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment portfolio. For
example, VTICX looks into stocks that pay lower dividends and are included in the Russell 1000

The Text Euthyphro By Plato
Jeanelle Moncrieffe
Dr. Cicura
Philosophy 2010
27 September 2017 The text Euthyphro by Plato is concisely a dialogue between Socrates and
Euthyphro. Socrates confronts Euthyphro when he argues The point which I should first wish
to understand is whether the pious or holy is blocked by the gods because it is holy, or because
it is blocked by the gods (cf. pg. 31); 10a. This refers back to the Devine Command Theory and
civil religion. Civil Religion is defined as a mixture between religion and cultural relativism. Civil
Religion is an alternative version of the Divine Command Theory that declares that God s
stipulations correspond to an individual culture. The Devine command theory is defined as an
action being morally right because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall, Plato is saying that the action being holy and the action being divinely approved does not
have to be equal, however if they are equivalent, then they don t have to acquire an equal meaning.
Therefore, Euthyphro cannot state that what is holy and was approved by the gods does not mean
the same thing. In like manner, his argument pushes the concept of morality. One might say that
what is good is good because God says it s good. This raises the question asked by many
philosophers does God love the good because it is good, or is it good because God loves it? The
simple answer is God loves goodness because he is good therefore he commands goodness. All
what is considered righteous to God may be found in the Bible. The word of the Bible reveals what
God expects from his people. It reveals what is good in his eyes and what is considered evil. The
words of the Bible portray the path of which should be followed. It shows the path of
righteousness where one may follow to be like God. Man was created in the image of God;
therefore, man was created to acquire his character. For those reasons, God loves what is good
because it is good and he is good. There are different standards for judging the morality of
something. An action is considered holy, moral or good because God loves it. Therefore, we can

Correlation Between Secondary And Secondary Students On...
Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine whether primary and secondary psychopaths had
deficiencies in empathy, and was conducted by applying Levenson s SRPS and ToM test to a non
institutionalized group. Studies show that psychopathic individuals have no deficiency with
empathy, and support the first hypothesis of a negative correlation between primary psychopathy
and empathy. The study doesn t support the second hypothesis of a negative correlation between
secondary psychopathy and empathy, with no evidence to support this.
The Association Between Primary Secondary Psychopathy and Cognitive Empathy
The term psychopathy is described as a disorder characterized by callousness (Richell et al, 2003)
and is more of a personality trait than a stereotype. Within the term psychopathy, there are
different subtypes that divide both a primary and secondary psychopath. A primary psychopath is
characterized by traits such as lack of remorse and manipulative. Secondary psychopaths are also
associated with social anxiety and low self esteem (Ali, 2010), known to be more emotional. Both
forms of psychopathy are deficient in cognitive empathy, the ability to understand and recognize
others emotions. Psyc121 is conducting this study to add to previous studies and fill in gaps from
previous literature, such as three readings used to support our studies. Levenson s main purpose
(Levenson, Kiehl, Fitzpatrick 1995) was to create a measurable

WOMEN IN HISTORY
AMELIA SHAHAN
CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY 1
COLUMBIA COLLEGE
In the late 19th and early 20th century it was found that women were not being found in historical
texts. During the 1950 s and 1960 s there was interest in women s suffering, but there would not be
a true movement until the late 1960 s with the Women s Liberation Movement Success. What
started out as a tea party of four female friends in 1848 turned into a movement.
The Women s Liberation Movement sought to change the lack of history of women and to keep
the promise of a better future for women. They first wrote the Declaration of Sentiments , using the
Declaration of Independence as a guide. In this were 18 grievances. The Women s Liberation

Even with the growth of research, women history was still seen as separate from main history. In
the 1990 s a call for a history based on gender so that a focus of both could be understood. A gender
centered history can be controversial to some feminists, the concern is that women experiences may
be lost. (Mary Menard, 1995)
Various groups have now formed to help expand women s history. The Women s History Network
was created for all those who are interested in Women History. We see Women history today in
modern curriculum. Professors who focus on Women s History has also increased. With
opportunists for women in higher education that is a trend that shall continue. Women s history is
constantly developing and change will continue with this third wave of activism.

White people did not allow black people at first in the sport activity. White people did not want to
have any contact with black community. Black people were only allowed to have their own
leagues. They were not allowed to be in the leagues that they had white athletes. The black people
could only compete with themselves. It was very hard for black peopleto even have any competition
with other races in that period of time. After a while when white peoplestarted noticing that black
people were actually very good at sports, at first they tried to not let them compete with white

black people were actually better than white people at specific sports.

The Last Years Of The Soviet Union
The Last Years of the Soviet Union The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or USSR was at one
time one of leading world powers, only rivaled by the United States. So that begs the questions,
how could a country that was at one time so dominant fall so far? In this essay I will examine the
circumstances that led up to the Soviet Union s eventual downfall by mainly focusing Mikhail
Gorbachev s term as leader of the Communist party of the Soviet Union and what changes he
brought about through glasnost and perestroika, democratization and the national independence
movements that began as a result of it, and lastly failed coup by conservative members of the
USSR against Gorbachev that ultimately became the last nail in the coffin for the... Show more

His solution was to launch a new campaign promoting reconstruction, or perestroika, to mainly to
decentralize the USSR s government. However Gorbachev soon realized that he could not
implement his new plan without first changing the perspective of the people within the USSR
itself and thus pushed forward his other campaign focusing on openness or glasnost. Gorbachev
s goal with glasnost was to gain the peoples trust. Before Gorbachev people within the Soviet
Union had little to no voice when it came to decisions within their own country, usually just
having to accept whatever choices that the leaders in Moscow had made. He tried to make the
Soviet government appear more trustworthy than it had ever seemed before by making the
government management of the country almost transparent. It was a policy of openness and
discussions of political and social issues would be open for discussion. This meant that every
action the government took would be public knowledge and open to debate. The results of
glasnost also caused a decline in censorship, which lead new found freedom of speech, which in
turn led to increased criticism of decisions that the Soviet Union had made prior. Media outlets now
were allowed to voice their own opinions and not worry about the ramifications in doing so because
glasnost was slowly loosening the stranglehold that the Communist party held over the media. The
media began to expose numerous social and economic problems that the

The Pros And Cons Of Industrial Animal Agriculture
What if I told you, what you choose to put on your plate has the ability to help save our home,
the earth, would you believe me? We assume we don t have the power to stop the terrible things
that seem to be happening in our world more and more lately, but the truth is that it is actually
all in our hands. It all depends on what we choose to do or do not do that make all the difference.
We are the problem, the ones who put the earth in the situation it is in now, however we could
also be the solution and fix it, if and only if we come together and understand the reality of the
problem we are in. So what does this have to do with what we choose to put on our plate you ask?

paper I am going to have you questioning whether we still live on a planet, because more and more
information we receive on the truths of industrial animal agriculture it seems as if instead we live
on a gigantic farm, occasionally broken up by cities, forests and oceans. Let s start with the basics,
what exactly is industrial animal agriculture; Industrial animal agriculture is a modern system of
intensive farming that uses intensive production lines and its goals are to produce the highest
output at the lowest cost, always at the animals expense, not understanding that although they are
paying a low cost to produce meat, they are paying a very very high cost in destruction of the
planet. The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more
money by packing as many animals as possible into small spaces, which results

The Unethical Behavior of Biegler and McCarthy in Anatomy...
After reviewing the two scenes from an Anatomy of a Murder and the Maryland Rules of
Professional Conduct, it s clear that Biegler and McCarthy behaved unethically; because he
disclosed client information without consent and he indirectly imposed what defense Lieutenant
Manion should plea. In the first scene, Biegler and McCarthy are discussing Biegler s first visit
with Mr. Manion and whether or not he was going to take the case; McCarthy also proposes
Biegler guide Mr.Manion into a defense. In the second scene, Biegler meets with Mr.Manion for
the second time and he indirectly guides him into a plea of insanity. In each of these scenes, several
Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct were violated such as: Maryland Rule 16 812 (1.6) (a),
Maryland Rule 16 812 (1.6) (5) (b), Maryland Rule 16 812 (8.4) (a), and Maryland Rule 16 812
(8.4) (c).
Based on Biegler s background as a lawyer, he should have known the rules about disclosing and
discussing information about a client s case. In the first scene between Biegler and McCarthy,
information about the representation of Lieutenant Manion was discussed and McCarthy
suggested that Biegler give Mr. Manion options for a defense. Biegler told McCarthy that he did
not coach Mr. Manion into a fake story and he gave his opinion of Mr.Manions character as being
insolent and hostile; hence the reason why he felt he was not fit to take the case. This discussion

at the courthouse, I had no expectations, since this trip was my first visit. However, I did notice
quite the crowd entering and exiting out of the courthouse. Nonetheless, I moved on ahead and
walked toward the entrance. Once inside, I observed two security guards, and a large metal detector.

Cyp27a1 Essay
Answer: Cytochrome P450 27A1 (CYP27A1) is an important cytochrome P450 enzyme which is
solely responsible for converting cholesterol to 27 hydroxoycholesterol. 27 hydroxycholesterol is
an oxysterol which can modulate estrogen and liver X receptors in a tissue specific manner.
Moreover, when 27 hydroxoycholesterol level is increased, estrogen and liver X receptors mediate
adverse effects of 27 hydroxoycholesterol in breast cancer. Therefore, regulation of CYP27A1 could
be potential target against breast cancer. The authors studied the regulation of CYP27A1 by 26
drugs from different therapeutic segment. During their study they showed some strengths as well as
some limitation. 2 pros and 2 cons of this study are elaborated below.
Pros

Drug binding assays: Spectrum of CYP27A1 changes due to the change between P450 heme iron
and a molecule in the sixth heme ligand. A water molecule is placed in that sixth heme ligand for
a resting state and substrate free P450 enzyme. Displacement of this water molecule or occupying
by another function group makes a spectrum difference for P450 enzyme. The authors used
spectral analysis for all 26 drugs to find out the CYP27A1 response to those drugs. In addition to
screening enzyme assay, spectral analysis of 26 drugs strengthens the paper.
Cons
1. Assessment of the CYP27A1 expression: The authors stated that CYP27A1 is the only enzyme
which converts cholesterol to 27 hydroxycholesterol in human. So they have measured the
concentrations of 27 hydroxycholesterol and cholesterol in mice. They interpreted CYP27A1
inhibition from those concentrations. However, they did not mention that CYP27A1 is the only
enzyme which converts cholesterol to 27 hydroxycholesterol in mice too. Therefore, we are not
sure that the only concentration of 27 hydroxycholesterol will make the authors conclusion valid.
The authors could use CYP27A1 knocked out mice to find the effect of the drugs on cholesterol
conversion without the CYP27A1 enzyme activity. In addition to that, they also could measure the
CYP27A1 mRNA expression for the drug treatments, to find the effect on CYP27A1 enzyme

Theme Of Holy Water By Joan Didion
Bella DeLeon
Instructor Westmoreland
ENGL 1321 16
September 8, 2017 Holy Water Water is important to people who do not have it, and the same is
true to control, (Didion). The article, Holy Water by Joan Didion draws parallelism to the
controlling or lack of control of water by metaphorically comparing water to life. Analyzing the
possibility of how people are taking water for granted, especially where rainfall is extremely
sparse, Didion touches on how supply and demand of a natural resource is solely dependent on its
availability and whether or not it is immediately needed. Didion s use of tone, appealing to
emotions, gathering the audience to develop a trust, and providing a direct insight into her purpose
allows the reader to recognize the importance water has within the planet.
Didion s slight infatuation with water seems to be based on her own experiences in which she
serves as testimonial evidence. As it happens my own reverence for water has always taken the
form of this constant meditation upon where the water is, of an obsessive interest not in the
politics of water but in the waterworks themselves, in the movement of water through aqueducts
and siphons and pumps and forebays and afterbays and weirs and drains, in plumbing on the grand
scale, (Didion). Therefore, her thesis remains strong and reliable, providing a further
understanding to the reason why water should have importance to the world and to the individual.
Additionally, drawing on the possible comparison that maybe water is a reference to the life of a
person can provide an idea that life is just as uncontrollable when it is not being managed. Her tone
exemplifies her certainty into how water gathers from the world and the neglectful actions can
cause hardship to society.
Water is not the same and the brilliance of water will never be from one direct location. The
comparison of water to the life of a person provides an idea that the uncontrollable nature of
water serves as a premise for life. According to the reference text in regard to premises, The
joining of two premises two statements taken to be true to produce a conclusion, a third statement,
is a syllogism (Barnet, Bedau and O Hara). Didion s use of a syllogism allows

Historical Cost and Fair Value
Abstract
This paper is written for the accounting theory course as a course project.
This paper discusses the differences between the historical cost accounting approach and the fair
value accounting approach. The discussion will focus on the debate on using which accounting
approach. We begin by stating the definitions of both concepts and discussing them thoroughly, then
we state the main advantages of the two approaches followed by comparison between them.
The last section of this paper discusses the disadvantages of each approach, including the main
criticism points against them.
In the end, we draw a conclusion on the best approach to be used in the Accounting profession
based on the previous discussion.
Introduction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When fair values are estimated using unadjusted or adjusted market prices, they are referred to
as mark to market values. If market prices for the same or similar positions are not available,
then firms must estimate fair values using valuation models. FAS 157 generally requires these
models to be applied using observable market inputs (such as interest rates and yield curves that
are observable at commonly quoted intervals) when they are available and unobservable firm
supplied inputs (such as expected cash flows developed using the firm s own data) otherwise.
When fair values are estimated using valuation models, they are referred to as mark to model values.
Advantages of Historical Cost
Supporters of Historical Cost Accounting argue that this method has several advantages that make
it popular. Some advantages are discussed below. * Historical cost is based on actual, not merely
possible, transactions. It is the acquisition price of the assets. The managers only have to record all
the assets and liabilities at their acquisition price. Hence they are measured and reported
objectively. Historical cost is therefore basically verifiable. Thus, this minimizes the risk of
manipulation of figures by the managers. * Historical cost has survived the test of time. Most users
of accounting data believe that accounting income is useful and that it constitutes a determinant of
the practices and thought patterns of decision makers. * Historical cost is an easier

Analysis Of The Story Eveline By James Joyce
Eveline The story begins with a silver lining in a memory that deepens into a pit of depression
The narrator helps to describe her memories as Eveline, staring blankly out a window, wallows
in her conflicting feelings of adoration and isolation. Today in many places, what takes place in
Dublin during 1914 as common place family dynamics, can be recognized as a cyclical pattern
of abuse between a controlling and manipulative father, his demure and defenseless wife, and
their helpless and hopeful children. In the story Eveline written by James Joyce the main
character is suffering from symptoms of vicarious trauma and abuse, and although she
recognizes, and fantasizes about the option and possibility of a better life, ultimately she finds
herself a victim of circumstance, frozen in time, unable to make a decision, she is forced to
watch her opportunity fade from her grasp. Eveline exhibits the qualities of a young woman who
has spent her life exposed to traumatic, systematic abuse. As she looks out over the field of her
childhood, reaching into the past to pull forward the memories of friends and happiness, a foul
taste creeps in to her mind of Her father [who] used often to hunt them in out of the field with his
blackthorn stick; (Joyce) and the author gives the first indicator that Eveline s life has been little
more than tragic. An abusive parent is bad enough, but the real despair she must feel is driven home
when Eveline s thoughts reveal the unthinkable: her

Analysis Of An Inspector Calls By Mendoza Okara...
It is fair to say that, Mendoza utilises Onofre Bouvila as a character to be portrayed as a direct
parallel to the development and aspirations of Barcelona. This is expressed in the novel, since; it
is irrelevant how rich and powerful Onofre becomes, he will never be accepted by the social elite.
This is due to the fact that, he can never be on the top rung of the social ladder literally and
figuratively, due to his impoverished upbringing and working class background. corriГі hacia la

which was very common belief at that time. From the poetic devices used their attitudes are
different because in the first he shows his sensitive side and tries to put a bit of romance into it.
However the imagery in the second goes against him as he believes that she was his object and

In order to establish a group that censors televisions and movies, the Motion Picture Producers

which to view the film and whether or not a parent s accompaniment is necessary. The Motion
Picture Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG

More and more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. The man
behind the ratings, Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America(MPAA),

Berliner s article, however, is less compelling than these. In order to explain the blend of the artifact
and the natural settings in the Liubei Ting (жµЃжќЇдє), she gives an example of a Qianlong period
vase with different designs and glazes, asserting that Qianlong liked contrast and preferred to
amalgamate different design elements together. The evidence, yet, is not solid enough to support
this argument. First, the lecturer does not show her evidence objectively, because she only talks
about the feature of a specific vase, rather than a general type. The type of vase that shows sharp
contrast between glaze colors is the wucai (дє”еЅ©) ware, developing from the sancai (дё‰еЅ©)
technique in the Tang dynasty. Apart from the mixed color vases, there were a lot of other
categories of vases in the Qianlong period. One dominant type is the blue and white ware.
Porcelains with famille rose overglaze enamel decoration were also popular. This kind has the
harmonious combination of colors of green, yellow, black, and rose with blurry edges between
colors. Also, these types of porcelain often have auspicious themes. For instance, the Blue and
White Vase of Soft Paste Porcelain with a Lion and an Eagle (Fig. 2) depicts a theme of longevity
and happiness. Presenting unity in both the subject matters and the glaze colors, these vases do not
suggest contrast. Instead of rushing into the conclusion that most Qianlong period vases show
contrasts in design, the speaker should have taken other types of vases into account. Therefore, it
cannot persuasively support the argument against the emperor s propensity for implementing
different elements in design. Neither could it justify Qianlong s conscious choice of integrating the
abstract manmade water channel into the realistic natural landscape

A Summary Of Absolute Space
I.Absolute Space
O Connor complained that stories written by Southerners had been influenced by Television. She
stated that Southern identity is no clichГ©. The difference that French Marxist cultural critic,
Henri Lefebvre makes between absolute and abstract spatiality s is one that clarifies the
conflicts in A Good Man is Hard to Find . He said that these spaces are categorized by their
relationship (Link 125). One may say that through the eyes of Lefebvre, one can see the spaces of
A Good Man Is Hard to Find in a way that relinquishes, diminishing them to the basic constraint of
sanctified, regular spaces of beauty, from one viewpoint, and mischievous spaces of current capital
on the other. The capacity of this nonexistent structure to uncover the subtle elements of O Connor
s spatial talk, and to do as such with regards to the abstracting energy of capital, makes it a
profitable supplement to exchanges of her utilization of space. The short story stated that absolute
space is made up on Christian fragments of nature (Link 126) existing outside of capitalist relations.
Link stated that absolute space is ruled by natural methods such as traditional agrarianism and
cultural revealing frameworks grounded in religious acceptance. Link specified that Absolute space
isn t greater than abstract space.
II.Abstract Space
The article states that Theoretical space is the result of a homogenizing power that motive is to
make space see through and readable leaving no space for outside voices. The abstraction in the
story reduces landscape by separating it from grace. Lefebvre writes Excess, or the incommunicable
has no existence in totalizing abstract space (Link 126). Link stated that this residue which remains
opaque the transparency of abstract inscriptions of space, is represented by The Misfit, who could
be reduced neither to a sentimental good man nor to an obscene killer(Link 126). The story states
the misfit is in his correct place only when the abstract place means containment such as prison.
Stone mountain was the first landmark that the family passed on their trip. Stone monument was
known as a failed monument.

The short story explained that the Grandmother brought

Descriptive Essay On Fear
An unpleasant emotion or feeling caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous,
likely to cause pain, or a threat : Fear. Fear is a strong word, it can mean a variety of things and
lead to a variety of things depending on who you are. My fear caused me to shake and tremble as if
the world was coming to an end. It makes me feel safe around no one. I look back on my life and
ask myself, was it all worth it for this? It makes me shrink and fall the size of of a humming bird.
My stomach starts to feel like it never has before. My head is spinning in circles and my hands

The summer of 2016 was the year my parents wanted to do a family trip somewhere and I was so
excited because today was the day they were gonna tell us where we were going. I was hoping
somewhere warm like the beach or some sporting event like a Cavs game or something of that
relation. My parents voice then interrupted my thoughts and I heard the words Cedar Point and I
thought my heart stopped. For those of you who don t know Cedar Point is one of the biggest
roller coaster parks in the world or an other words for someone who is afraid of heights Cedar Point
equals death. When parents told me my heart skipped a beat, at first I didn t say anything and
my parents were confused I guess they expected me to be excited. But the thing was I never really
told my parents about this new recent fear I had because I knew that if I did I they would for sure
make fun of me. So I tried to play it off and act like I was a little excited. After explaining the
details of the trip to me and my sisters, my parents told me I could bring a few friends so I guess
that made the trip a little bit better. So I called up some of my friends and they said they would be

Roger Bushell s Life In The Concentration Camp
Roger Bushell was an Auxiliary Air Force pilot who organized and led the escape from the
infamous German prison camp Stalag Luft III. Roger was first made into a prisoner of war
(POW) when he arrived at Dulag Luft. He was made into a permanent part of the British staff
under senior British officer Wing Commander Harry Day. His job in the POW camp was to help
new air force captured soldiers get used to their own life as a POW. Roger was always thinking
about escape. He quickly became friends with Fleet Air Arm pilot Jimmy Buckley and Day. The
three of them soon formed a committee known for being responsible for all escape attempts. Roger
was transferred along with the 17 other most troubling prisoners to the new camp StalagLuft III after

In Rogers childhood he could swear fluently in English, Afrikaans, and Kaffir, and he could spit
an incredible distance. This led to him being disliked and beat by other boys. Other parents also
disliked Roger a great deal. During the war he was captured by the Germans and put in to a
concentration camp. This led to him being considered a Prisoner of Waror a (POW) for short. Life
in the concentration camp was terrible. The German security guards were armed with torches
and steel spikes just to torment the already dying prisoners. This made the prisoners very angry
and they wanted to escape, so they started digging tunnels. Though Eventually the Germans
caught on. They dug sound detectors into the ground around the barbed wire fences at the
border of the camp to pick up the tunnel digging sounds, and like clockwork they found tunnel
after tunnel. There were also odd escape ways that the Germans had no way of picking up on; only
a few people escaped this way. One prisoner dressed up as a ferret and crawled away to freedom,
and the Germans didn t suspect a thing. If you were caught doing something undesirable as a

The Religious Life Of Theological Students
Winsomely presented, B.B. Warfield is well known for his scholarship with no exception seen
here, In The Religious Life of Theological Students. Here as seminary students, we must chiefly
be Godly men, apt to teach with the added passion of devotion driven by our love of God. As a
result of our love for God, we are encouraged to have in our vocation a devotion with zeal and piety.
We are to be as Warfield puts it; God made, meaning a minister is called, shaped and developed
divinely by God s decree and power thereby being made worthy through the process of God s call
upon their life.
Warnings against pitfalls As religious men, we should avoid the peril of becoming so engrossed
in our theological studies that we neglect our personal devotion. Warfield s caveat to us is
Christian service or work alone cannot replace the depth of Christian affection to God. Work
does not equal prayer it is the combination of work and prayer that will develop as ministers. By
maintaining a strong devotion to God we are setting an example of holding fast to the confession
of our hope. We must frequently examine ourselves against God s Word to verify our hearts. It is
as Warfield says, we should have our hearts on fire brightly so that in our innermost being we are
men of God. The greatness of our calling as ministers should flow from the depth of our
understanding of the unsurpassed greatness of God. This understanding should motivate, empower,
equip and direct us in our

The Causes and Effects of Gender Imbalance in Asia
The Causes and Effects of Gender Imbalance in Asia
By Tom Farrer Throughout this paper I will focus on the phenomenon of the gender imbalance in
Asia. I will begin by assessing the current situation and researching the various causes which have
led to it. I shall then analyse the possible consequences to follow and conclude with an outlook to
the future.
According to the United Nations the recommended sex ratio at birth (SRB) for a country is 107,
meaning that for every 100 females born, 107 males are born . The average SRB for
industrialised countries lies between 104 and 106 , therefore looking at the figures for many Asian
countries, we can see that something is clearly wrong. With many countries where the SRB is well
above average, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of his more well known inventions is the ultra sound machine used for foetus scanning.
Coming into widespread use throughout Asia in the mid 1980s, this machine enabled families to
find out the sex of their unborn child and is therefore held responsible, to a considerable extent, for
the gender imbalance.
In order to combat the obvious effects of the ultra sound machine, the Chinese government has
since prohibited its use for non medical sex identification (see the second section of the table below
), as has the Indian government in the Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (1994). Nevertheless,
despite the prohibition of non medical sex identification and abortion in China, the floating and
rural population and corruption among medical practices has made enforcing these laws difficult.
The situation is similar in India, where illegal sex identification has become a lucrative business,
despite the three year jail sentence for those found out. As in China, this punishment is also very
difficult to enforce and, especially in rural areas, is often ignored by local police altogether.
Therefore, the Chinese government has introduced different initiatives to combat the gender
imbalance, one of which is the Care For Girls Campaign. Starting with a pilot scheme in Chaohu,
Anhui Province in 2000, the government established specialised organisations, offered

Research Paper On Cuban Embargo
It is said that President John F. Kennedy secured nearly 1,200 Cuban cigars just hours before
enacting the Cuban trade embargo in 1962. Many Americans probably wished they could have
done this before all trade between the United States and Cuba ceased as the United States now
marks the 55th year of an ongoing embargo against Cuba. On February 3, 1962 President Kennedy
signed Proclamation 3447 to declare an embargo against all trade between the United Statesand
Cuba. This embargo consists of trade, travel, and commerce restrictions for all people and
companies under United States jurisdiction. The United States cut off all ties with this neighboring
nation just ninety miles off the coast of Florida. This was Kennedy s defense against communism,...

What do these countries have to do with Cuba? While despite these countries records of human
rights violations and differing governments, the United States continues trade, travel and commerce
with all of these nations. Wayne Smith explains how former President George W. Bush lifted trade
sanctions on North Korea in 2008 even amidst concerns about the nations desire to develop nuclear
weapons (Smith, Wayne). Cuba has tried to meet the high standards of the United States with no
avail. After the CDA was passed in 1992, Havana initiated a number of reform measures in 1993,
permitting farmers markets and small private enterprises, including private restaurants and repair
shops, use of the U.S. dollar as legal daily tender, and more favorable terms for foreign investment.
Americans are allowed to travel to other communist countries, nations known for human rights
violations, and even places on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism but cannot travel to Cuba. The

The First Experiments Of Water Treatment
A plumber is an adventurer who traces leaky pipes to their source (Arthur Baer). We have all
heard the saying, The plumber protects the health of the nation , but what does that really mean?
Plumbing has been around since 6500 BC, maybe even longer. Ancient water wells were found in
the Jezreel Valley, which historians date to be thousands of years old. This was one of the first
signs of plumbingin the ancient world. The Ancient Greek civilizations evolved plumbing, being
the first ones to use underground clay pipes for water distribution and sanitation. They were also
one of the first ones to create and use flush toilets. The 54Roman Empire used indoor plumbing to
get water to individuals inside buildings and homes. Plumbing is responsible for bringing water to
people, because people cannot survive without water. as we got into the modern age, plumbing
started to evolve. The first experiments of water treatment were happening in the early modern age.
This would enable the supply of clean, potable water to everyone. Plumbers are now responsible for
the maintenance and sanitation of all water supplysystems and treatment plants. Plumbing is one of
the most important job in the world because plumbers are responsible for providing clean healthy
water needed to live, plumbers are responsible for providing water efficiency needed to avoid the
serious world water shortage and plumbers also help provide a safe non polluted environment.

Frozen With a beautiful combination of catchy songs, life like animations, and an incredibly
well developed plot, this Disney animated film leaves the world frozen in amazement. Released
in December 2013, the movie Frozen speaks on being different and of love. The main character,
Anna, and her older sister, Elsa were extremely close until Elsa s wintery powers of which she was
born with almost got Anna killed. While Anna held on to that relationship, Elsa had shut herself out
in fear of hurting someone. Things got worse as their parents, the king and the queen died in a

Frozen easily fills this requirement because who hasn t ever felt alone or different? Anyone who
is different, like Elsa, would be feared, mistreated, labeled, and honestly, who s the
same?Everyone is unique and different in their own way. In society, people who are different
are made fun of, excluded, judged, etc. Watching Elsa go from fearing herself and isolating
herself to accepting and loving herself showed us who cares what others think? Who never felt
shy or nervous like Anna did before the ball. Everyone should be able to relate to at least one of
the characters in this movies and therefore Frozen would be deemed realistic. In the eyes of
Franzen and Groen, the movie Frozen would be considered quality art as it contains realistic
characters, realistic scenarios as life is tragic , and realistic and relatable in general. Aside for that,
Frozen is a top rated movie that everyone, not only kids

Cosmos Beyond The Exoplanetary System
Introduction Over the last two decades, the study of exoplanetary systems has become a very
active field that will grow continuously in the coming years as technology has made it possible to
actually observe the Cosmos beyond the Solar System. The simple definition of an exoplanet, also
called extrasolar planet, is any planetary body that orbits a star outside of our solar system
(Encyclopedia Britannica). In a Scientific manner, an official definition of exoplanets may be at
this point unjustified since the situation is still evolving and that any definitive definition is likely
to be too rigid to adapt to new discoveries (Schnieder et al. 2011). Prior to the 1990 s, it was not
possible to detect planets with certainty beyond our Solar System due to lack of technology... Show

San Velazquez s Las Meninas
Kim 1
Diego VelГЎzquez s Las Meninas
Las Meninas by Diego VelГЎzquez is depicted as a group portrait of Spanish King Philip IV (8
April 1605 17 September 1665) at the Habsburg court. The painting well demonstrates VelГЎzquez
s painting techniques that can be recognized by dramatic mood, rich color and extreme contrast
between light and dark. It is absolutely extraordinary and implies influences VelГЎzquez has had,
especially Flemish Baroque realism. VelГЎzquez had a deeper ambition in his mind when creating
this masterpiece. He wanted to earn the title that can ensure him a high position in society. So,
VelГЎzquez had this desire for an aristocratic title better than any other single court positions he
could get.

. VelГЎzquez used refined techniques and composition so effectively to create this masterpiece
describing the presence of the royal family. To create such a high class art, he emphasized his
techniques and ability by reflecting reality in the painting. A clear and description of the royal
court, Las Meninas is a masterpiece that demonstrates both VelГЎzquez s skill as a painter and the
complexities of human intellectualism. The figures are painted near life sized to show many
things; overwhelming realism, complexities, and symbolism.
The painting is oil on canvas completed in 1656. At first, the painting was called El Cuadro de la

Copper Statue Analysis
Mohamad Habehh Walking around The Metropolitan Museum of Art, there are many ancient
pieces of art and old artifacts on display. One of the art pieces that caught my eye was the Head
of a Ruler, from ancient Iranian or Mesopotamian times. I chose this figure because the person
depicted in the copper head looked like an important figure of the time. The man is well
groomed and has an emotionless face, but it also looks like he is portraying a little confidence
in his expressionless face. Considering this is a copper statue, I think it is safe to say it was not
completed in a short amount of time, leaving me to wonder if the man posed for the figure.
Whether he posed for it or not, it still gives off the vibe that he held a high title in society. There
was no indication on the display of who the man was or what his role was, only assumptions that
supported my ideas that the man was an important figure in that society, possibly a ruler or king.
This figure makes me curious in the sense that this man was obviously an important figure during
ancient times, but he cannot be identified in modern times. I also can t help but assume he might
not have made a great impact in society, whether he was a king, ruler, or even... Show more content

There are cracks throughout the figure due to age and possible mishandling. It is fairly simple
in terms of detail. While there is some extent of texture in the man s face and skin, it is hard to
tell whether it was intentional or due to average erosion. The features of the man s face are
extremely realistic, nonetheless. The eyes are hollow, which initially led me to believe the entire
figure is hollow. While the description does say that there were other supports inside the hollow
figure to hold the figure in place, there is no other physical indication that the figure is hollow. The
artist must have been extremely talented to be able to make a very realistic looking figurine of a
man using a hollow

Erika Riemann Research Paper
The story of Erika Riemann is a rather upsetting one to say the least. Erika Riemann was a
political prisoner of war. She was to be imprisoned for 10 years as a teenager, 18 months of
which was spent in Sachsenhausen. Riemann was only a young girl, 14 years old, when the
soviets believed her to be an anti communist and thus the majority of Riemann s life was spent in
concentration camps. Her crime? That she drew a bow on a picture of Josef Stalin s moustache.
When World War II ended, concentration camps that the Nazis had used for imprisonment of
many victims of the war and the Nazi regime, which had supposedly been abolished, were now
converted by the Soviet powers. They were used for active Nazis and those who opposed the
communism regime... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Riemann remembers being arrested and then taken to a dungeon in Ludwigslut. It was there that
Riemann was questioned and broken down until she was forced to confess to a crime she had
not committed or been a part of as a part of a Nazi movement (Molloy 2009). The secondary
source states that the main purpose of the prisons was for interrogating prisoners. They were to
confess to a crime they did not commit and these accusations were usually entirely false (Gulag:
Soviet Prison Camps and Their Legacy page 26), as was the case of Riemann. The atrocities that
Erika Riemann experienced and observed during her time in the camps can be evidenced
through the secondary sources that states that there was a surge of random arrests that were
made that came to a point where an internal review made by the Soviet authorities presented the
wrongful arrests of 35000 people as it was the case for Riemann. In 1948, most of the people who
were unjustly arrested were released. Thousands of others who were not released were passed on
to the East German powers for their sentences to be completed in similarly appalling conditions in

  • 4. Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman... Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign or otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency, parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31). In Roald Dahls Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against violence as both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these imperfect parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self. The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling misunderstood and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which leaves Coraline struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl 4), Matilda is both blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave knowledge, it is her intellect that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy her parents and everyday walk to the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, when she tells her of her mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my father (10). With this statement Matilda shows how her parents have neglected to foster her intellect. Matilda s eagerness to digest information, and the fact that the only book in the Wormwood home is her mother s cookbook, elaborates how she differs from her parents. ... • 5. The Life Of Superman Saves Seven Children Thinking back to my admittedly privileged childhood, the most vivid memory I had wasn t of my first dance recital, or my first lacrosse game, or even my first fist fight that I won against my seventh grade bully. It wasn t even of the day when my father was brutally murdered in front of my sister and I when we were thirteen. No, the most evocative memory I had was the day I purchased the newspaper for my parents at age twelve and saw, sprawled across the cover, the headline that changed my life forever. SUPERMAN SAVES SEVEN CHILDREN; PRAISED AS HERO ONCE MORE. That day, I took my alarmingly large amount of allowance, went down to the novelty store across the road, and bought sixty seven dollars worth of Superman merchandise. I came home with six comic books, three old newspapers, an action figure, a skimpy tank top that made its way to college with me before being puked all over, and a notepad that would later fuel my journalistic obsession to become as great as Lois Lane, Superman s girl of choice. A month after acquiring that first newspaper for my parents, my father left the world with a bullet hole placed cleanly in the center of both eyes. Soon after my Superman obsession began to dwindle in my first year of college, the masked hero Batman faced off with his archenemy and made headlines in Gotham, where I attended school. So I traded in my Superman shorts for a Batman shirt and went searching for him on the streets at night, desperate. Late in my third year of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The BSC takes forethought. It is not a tool you can just think up one night to solve a problem. Instead, it is recommended that you hold a meeting to plan out what goals you would like to see your company reach in each of the four above areas. Once you have clearly stated objectives, you can then begin to break down these objectives in what you will need, financially, to bring these objectives to fruition. 2. While the BSC gives you an overall view of the four areas for concern in business growth and development, these four areas do not paint the whole picture. The financial information included on the scorecard is limited. Instead, to be successfully implemented, the balanced scorecard must be part of a bigger strategy for company growth that includes meticulous accounting methods. 3. Many companies use metrics that are not applicable to their own situation. It is vitally important when using balanced scorecards to make the information being tracked applicable to your needs. Otherwise, the metrics will be meaningless. 4. Review Strategic management is a long process that is not limited to making good plans; most of today s strategic management challenges stem from the areas of implementations; it s obvious from many financial scandals, and company failures, leading to acquisitions and downsizing, that those firms didn t lack a well developed plans and strategies, but thy did lack the appropriate control strategies

This allowed the team to focus its efforts back on its primary ticket load, improving overall customer service as time to resolve tickets decreased. Analytical Aspirations In October of 2015, ETS began an effort to extrapolate more meaning from the data. The need for advanced analytics, and proactive solutions to problems became a central focus for the organization. Over 150,000 tickets were analyzed for textual similarities. Alerts that automatically generate tickets were a key finding, since each type of alert had similar ticket descriptions. Tickets were then categorized and grouped by the type of alert the ticket was representative of. As of 2016, ETS has successfully categorized over 200,000 incidents into over 80 distinct categories. ETS uses these categories to trend out tickets over time, and see what common issues impact applications, servers, network devices, and databases. For example, in January of 2016, it was identified that there was a sudden increase in alerts for low disk space on the C drives of servers running the Windows 2008 operating system. We compiled the data into a report, which was then presented to the leading manager of the Windows Server Support team, who then had their team investigate the issue. It was then decided to increase the amount of C drive space on the impacted servers. Their process was also updated to increase the amount of memory allocated to the C drive on new server builds. • 13. The Second Sex By Beudie De Beauvoir Analysis II.INTRODUCTION Modern women are bringing down the standards and stereotypes that are put upon them by society; but their success in breaking the stereotype and living freely in their human state is not something that can be handed to them that easily. Women are born into a world which subordinate them to men, making it as though their ultimate goal and destination should be marriage, which makes it important to study their journey deliberately. Women are given a standard and pre destined path for them to play in their lives. In the second volume of The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir tries to describe how a woman is trained to accept her position and what she has to go through as well as the escape mechanisms that are permitted to her. We can then understand the problems women face and their keenness for a better tomorrow. Germany has massed their best Soldiers from the Twelfth SS Panzer Division fielding the newest and deadliest Armored Fighting vehicles the world had ever seen. However, the Americans have an ace in the hole, The United States Army Field Artillery has made some historic and very deadly innovations. In order to defend the Northern shoulder from being overrun by the 1st SS Panzer Corps and the 67th Corps, the 405th FA Battalion must utilize their fortified fighting positions to capitalize on the advancing enemy, synchronize and mass their firing capability, and utilize a newly developed secret weapon called the Proximity Fuze to prevent the German forces from obtaining a supply through the Twin Villages. For seven days, the Battle of Elsenborn Ridge was valorously held by the artillery forces and Infantry forces of the United States Army. (Starmann R. , 2015). This battle was the greatest crushing victory of the Ardennes valley and is the only part of the Battle of the Bulge line where the Germans failed to advance. (Starmann R. , 2015). • 16. The Influence Of Dragons On East Asian Culture Dragons are prevalent in myths all across the world. Eastern countries in particular hold dragons in the highest regard in their cultures. The dragons of East Asian legend have sweeping powers. They breathe clouds, move the seasons, and control the waters of rivers, lakes, and seas. They are linked with yang, the masculine principle of heat, light, and action, and opposed to yin, the feminine principle of coolness, darkness, and repose. Dragons have been part of East Asian culture for more than 4,000 years. In the religious traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, they have been honored as sources of power and bringers of rain. (amnh.org) Dragons hold more significance in China than nearly anywhere else in the world. They are usually depicted as brightly colored snakes with legs that, in legend, can be as small as a garden snake or large enough to connect heaven and earth. Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is basically represented by three big allegories as a whole; Political, Historical, and Religious. The allegorical meaning for the novel differs from each category of allegory. For political, later in the book, there are two different clashing tribes representing a different type of government. The Historical allegory compares the main characters such as Simon, Piggy, or Ralph to famous or infamous historical people. The first thing Ralph does when he gets to the island is take off his clothes and take a bath in the lagoon. Ralph inspected the whole thirty yards carefully and then plunged in. The water was warmer than his blood and he might have been swimming in a huge bath. (Golding, 12) This gesture relates to the act of Baptism and the innocence of Adam and Eve. Later in the book, the boys become more savage than civilised trying to find the beast, or snake thing when it is really just hiding inside of them. This is just like how Adam and Eve were fooled by the satan that disguised himself as a serpent. The Devil figure, or the Satan is another religious allegory hidden in Lord of The Flies. It is actually hidden right in the title. Lord of the Flies in hebrew means Beelzebub which is another name for Satan or Devil. This name is from the Canaanite Baal which means Lord and so he is known for lord of the flies. To expand even more, the boys on the island are described with fly like behaviors and actions. First, I learned how important it is to cater literacy instruction to the individual student. I have learned about many great instructional strategies for teaching literacy but not all strategies are going to work for every student. It is important to select strategies that build on student strengths to support the student s literacy needs (Serravallo, 2014). I also learned that a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part 1: Descriptive Data and Summary Statistics of the Five Mutual Fund Table 1: We selected 5 mutual funds that have 80% of more invested in stock equity securities in the mutual fund. The 5 mutual funds all have different investment styles according to Morningstar. The investment objective defines what each mutual fund s long term goals are. It includes things such as required return, the risk tolerance, and investment time horizon. The investment style is the different strategy used to set asset allocation of the mutual fund. It sets expectations for long term portfolio performance. For example, VTICX focuses on large blend, where HASCX focuses on small blend; meaning that they will target different portfolio asset allocations. Each fund will allocate its funds differently and in different proportions. The investment strategy is a set of rules, behaviors or procedures designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment portfolio. For example, VTICX looks into stocks that pay lower dividends and are included in the Russell 1000 Index so they can provide a tax efficient investment return consisting of long term capital appreciation. Socrates confronts Euthyphro when he argues The point which I should first wish to understand is whether the pious or holy is blocked by the gods because it is holy, or because it is blocked by the gods (cf. pg. 31); 10a. This refers back to the Devine Command Theory and civil religion. Civil Religion is defined as a mixture between religion and cultural relativism. Overall, Plato is saying that the action being holy and the action being divinely approved does not have to be equal, however if they are equivalent, then they don t have to acquire an equal meaning. Therefore, Euthyphro cannot state that what is holy and was approved by the gods does not mean the same thing. In like manner, his argument pushes the concept of morality. One might say that what is good is good because God says it s good. This raises the question asked by many philosophers does God love the good because it is good, or is it good because God loves it? The simple answer is God loves goodness because he is good therefore he commands goodness. All what is considered righteous to God may be found in the Bible. The word of the Bible reveals what God expects from his people. It reveals what is good in his eyes and what is considered evil. The words of the Bible portray the path of which should be followed. It shows the path of righteousness where one may follow to be like God. Man was created in the image of God; therefore, man was created to acquire his character. For those reasons, God loves what is good because it is good and he is good. There are different standards for judging the morality of something. An action is considered holy, moral or good because God loves it. Therefore, we can assume that morality is dependent on God s will or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Correlation Between Secondary And Secondary Students On... Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine whether primary and secondary psychopaths had deficiencies in empathy, and was conducted by applying Levenson s SRPS and ToM test to a non institutionalized group. Studies show that psychopathic individuals have no deficiency with empathy, and support the first hypothesis of a negative correlation between primary psychopathy and empathy. The study doesn t support the second hypothesis of a negative correlation between secondary psychopathy and empathy, with no evidence to support this. The Association Between Primary Secondary Psychopathy and Cognitive Empathy The term psychopathy is described as a disorder characterized by callousness (Richell et al, 2003) and is more of a personality trait than a stereotype. Within the term psychopathy, there are different subtypes that divide both a primary and secondary psychopath. A primary psychopath is characterized by traits such as lack of remorse and manipulative. Secondary psychopaths are also associated with social anxiety and low self esteem (Ali, 2010), known to be more emotional. Both forms of psychopathy are deficient in cognitive empathy, the ability to understand and recognize others emotions. However Gorbachev soon realized that he could not implement his new plan without first changing the perspective of the people within the USSR itself and thus pushed forward his other campaign focusing on openness or glasnost. Gorbachev s goal with glasnost was to gain the peoples trust. Before Gorbachev people within the Soviet Union had little to no voice when it came to decisions within their own country, usually just having to accept whatever choices that the leaders in Moscow had made. He tried to make the Soviet government appear more trustworthy than it had ever seemed before by making the government management of the country almost transparent. It was a policy of openness and discussions of political and social issues would be open for discussion. This meant that every action the government took would be public knowledge and open to debate. The results of glasnost also caused a decline in censorship, which lead new found freedom of speech, which in turn led to increased criticism of decisions that the Soviet Union had made prior. Media outlets now were allowed to voice their own opinions and not worry about the ramifications in doing so because glasnost was slowly loosening the stranglehold that the Communist party held over the media. Cyp27a1 Essay Answer: Cytochrome P450 27A1 (CYP27A1) is an important cytochrome P450 enzyme which is solely responsible for converting cholesterol to 27 hydroxoycholesterol. 27 hydroxycholesterol is an oxysterol which can modulate estrogen and liver X receptors in a tissue specific manner. Moreover, when 27 hydroxoycholesterol level is increased, estrogen and liver X receptors mediate adverse effects of 27 hydroxoycholesterol in breast cancer. Therefore, regulation of CYP27A1 could be potential target against breast cancer. The authors studied the regulation of CYP27A1 by 26 drugs from different therapeutic segment. A water molecule is placed in that sixth heme ligand for a resting state and substrate free P450 enzyme. Displacement of this water molecule or occupying by another function group makes a spectrum difference for P450 enzyme. The authors used spectral analysis for all 26 drugs to find out the CYP27A1 response to those drugs. In addition to screening enzyme assay, spectral analysis of 26 drugs strengthens the paper. Cons 1. Assessment of the CYP27A1 expression: The authors stated that CYP27A1 is the only enzyme which converts cholesterol to 27 hydroxycholesterol in human. So they have measured the concentrations of 27 hydroxycholesterol and cholesterol in mice. They interpreted CYP27A1 inhibition from those concentrations. However, they did not mention that CYP27A1 is the only enzyme which converts cholesterol to 27 hydroxycholesterol in mice too. Therefore, we are not sure that the only concentration of 27 hydroxycholesterol will make the authors conclusion valid. • 32. Theme Of Holy Water By Joan Didion Bella DeLeon Instructor Westmoreland ENGL 1321 16 September 8, 2017 Holy Water Water is important to people who do not have it, and the same is true to control, (Didion). The article, Holy Water by Joan Didion draws parallelism to the controlling or lack of control of water by metaphorically comparing water to life. Analyzing the possibility of how people are taking water for granted, especially where rainfall is extremely sparse, Didion touches on how supply and demand of a natural resource is solely dependent on its availability and whether or not it is immediately needed. Didion s use of tone, appealing to emotions, gathering the audience to develop a trust, and providing a direct insight into her purpose allows the reader to recognize the importance water has within the planet. Didion s slight infatuation with water seems to be based on her own experiences in which she serves as testimonial evidence. As it happens my own reverence for water has always taken the form of this constant meditation upon where the water is, of an obsessive interest not in the politics of water but in the waterworks themselves, in the movement of water through aqueducts and siphons and pumps and forebays and afterbays and weirs and drains, in plumbing on the grand scale, (Didion). Therefore, her thesis remains strong and reliable, providing a further understanding to the reason why water should have importance to the world and to the individual. Additionally, drawing on the possible comparison that maybe water is a reference to the life of a person can provide an idea that life is just as uncontrollable when it is not being managed. Her tone exemplifies her certainty into how water gathers from the world and the neglectful actions can cause hardship to society. Water is not the same and the brilliance of water will never be from one direct location. The comparison of water to the life of a person provides an idea that the uncontrollable nature of water serves as a premise for life. According to the reference text in regard to premises, The joining of two premises two statements taken to be true to produce a conclusion, a third statement, is a syllogism (Barnet, Bedau and O Hara). When fair values are estimated using unadjusted or adjusted market prices, they are referred to as mark to market values. If market prices for the same or similar positions are not available, then firms must estimate fair values using valuation models. FAS 157 generally requires these models to be applied using observable market inputs (such as interest rates and yield curves that are observable at commonly quoted intervals) when they are available and unobservable firm supplied inputs (such as expected cash flows developed using the firm s own data) otherwise. When fair values are estimated using valuation models, they are referred to as mark to model values. Advantages of Historical Cost Supporters of Historical Cost Accounting argue that this method has several advantages that make it popular. Some advantages are discussed below. * Historical cost is based on actual, not merely possible, transactions. It is the acquisition price of the assets. The managers only have to record all the assets and liabilities at their acquisition price. Hence they are measured and reported objectively. Historical cost is therefore basically verifiable. Thus, this minimizes the risk of manipulation of figures by the managers. * Historical cost has survived the test of time. • 34. Analysis Of The Story Eveline By James Joyce Eveline The story begins with a silver lining in a memory that deepens into a pit of depression The narrator helps to describe her memories as Eveline, staring blankly out a window, wallows in her conflicting feelings of adoration and isolation. Today in many places, what takes place in Dublin during 1914 as common place family dynamics, can be recognized as a cyclical pattern of abuse between a controlling and manipulative father, his demure and defenseless wife, and their helpless and hopeful children. In the story Eveline written by James Joyce the main character is suffering from symptoms of vicarious trauma and abuse, and although she recognizes, and fantasizes about the option and possibility of a better life, ultimately she finds herself a victim of circumstance, frozen in time, unable to make a decision, she is forced to watch her opportunity fade from her grasp. Eveline exhibits the qualities of a young woman who has spent her life exposed to traumatic, systematic abuse. As she looks out over the field of her childhood, reaching into the past to pull forward the memories of friends and happiness, a foul taste creeps in to her mind of Her father [who] used often to hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick; (Joyce) and the author gives the first indicator that Eveline s life has been little more than tragic. Television and movie ratings have become more lenient against violence and indiscretion because these things are now seen as entertainment. Is this appropriate for our youth? Should children be exposed to these images so early on? How does censorship in the media affect adolescents? Children are the future of our society and need to have some understanding of real world occurrences. Ultimately, censorship can only be determined by the parents. The media cannot filter every bit of controversial images. What rights does the media have in this situation? How are their First Amendment rights applied here? As an aspiring political science... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some see this as the denial of an individual s freedom of speech. In order to establish a group that censors televisions and movies, the Motion Picture Producers Association (MPAA) was created. Each rating category has a description of the appropriate age at which to view the film and whether or not a parent s accompaniment is necessary. The Motion Picture Producers Association assesses a film and gives it a rating of G (general audiences), PG (parental guidance suggested), PG 13 (parents strongly cautioned), R (restricted), or NC 17 (no one under seventeen admitted). As the film industry has been changing over time, so have the ratings. More and more parents are having issues with the ratings that some films are issued. The man behind the ratings, Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America(MPAA), says the system works just fine. Parents use it and trust it, and that s why it s lasted for almost 35 years, Valenti says. It warns parents in advance about what s in a particular movie, but ultimately, parents are responsible for the behavior and conduct of their children not the ratings system (Hansen 273). The main issue in censorship today is responsibility. Who is essentially responsible for properly censoring and controlling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ting Mapping the Man behind the Qing period Garden The symposium, Artful Retreat: Garden Culture of the Qing Dynasty , jointly organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and Harvard University and held on 12 13 November 2010, reveals Qianlong s emotional relationships to the Qing gardens. Gathering scholars from Australia, China, Europe, and the United States, it provides an exceptional opportunity for ten scholars, such as Hui Zou (Professor of Architecture at the University of Florida) and Mark Elliott (Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University), to share their perspectives on the artistic, political, historical, and economic aspects of the Qing period garden culture.... In order to explain the blend of the artifact and the natural settings in the Liubei Ting (жµЃжќЇдє), she gives an example of a Qianlong period vase with different designs and glazes, asserting that Qianlong liked contrast and preferred to amalgamate different design elements together. The evidence, yet, is not solid enough to support this argument. First, the lecturer does not show her evidence objectively, because she only talks about the feature of a specific vase, rather than a general type. The type of vase that shows sharp contrast between glaze colors is the wucai (дє”еЅ©) ware, developing from the sancai (дё‰еЅ©) technique in the Tang dynasty. Apart from the mixed color vases, there were a lot of other categories of vases in the Qianlong period. One dominant type is the blue and white ware. Porcelains with famille rose overglaze enamel decoration were also popular. This kind has the harmonious combination of colors of green, yellow, black, and rose with blurry edges between colors. Also, these types of porcelain often have auspicious themes. For instance, the Blue and White Vase of Soft Paste Porcelain with a Lion and an Eagle (Fig. 2) depicts a theme of longevity and happiness. Presenting unity in both the subject matters and the glaze colors, these vases do not suggest contrast. Instead of rushing into the conclusion that most Qianlong period vases show contrasts in design, the speaker should have taken other types of vases into account. Therefore, it cannot persuasively support the argument against the emperor s propensity for implementing different elements in design. Neither could it justify Qianlong s conscious choice of integrating the abstract manmade water channel into the realistic natural landscape ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The difference that French Marxist cultural critic, Henri Lefebvre makes between absolute and abstract spatiality s is one that clarifies the conflicts in A Good Man is Hard to Find . He said that these spaces are categorized by their relationship (Link 125). One may say that through the eyes of Lefebvre, one can see the spaces of A Good Man Is Hard to Find in a way that relinquishes, diminishing them to the basic constraint of sanctified, regular spaces of beauty, from one viewpoint, and mischievous spaces of current capital on the other. The capacity of this nonexistent structure to uncover the subtle elements of O Connor s spatial talk, and to do as such with regards to the abstracting energy of capital, makes it a profitable supplement to exchanges of her utilization of space. The short story stated that absolute space is made up on Christian fragments of nature (Link 126) existing outside of capitalist relations. Link stated that absolute space is ruled by natural methods such as traditional agrarianism and cultural revealing frameworks grounded in religious acceptance. Link specified that Absolute space isn t greater than abstract space. II.Abstract Space The article states that Theoretical space is the result of a homogenizing power that motive is to make space see through and readable leaving no space for outside voices. The abstraction in the story reduces landscape by separating it from grace. Lefebvre writes Excess, or the incommunicable has no existence in totalizing abstract space (Link 126). Link stated that this residue which remains opaque the transparency of abstract inscriptions of space, is represented by The Misfit, who could be reduced neither to a sentimental good man nor to an obscene killer(Link 126). Here as seminary students, we must chiefly be Godly men, apt to teach with the added passion of devotion driven by our love of God. As a result of our love for God, we are encouraged to have in our vocation a devotion with zeal and piety. We are to be as Warfield puts it; God made, meaning a minister is called, shaped and developed divinely by God s decree and power thereby being made worthy through the process of God s call upon their life. Warnings against pitfalls As religious men, we should avoid the peril of becoming so engrossed in our theological studies that we neglect our personal devotion. Warfield s caveat to us is Christian service or work alone cannot replace the depth of Christian affection to God. Work does not equal prayer it is the combination of work and prayer that will develop as ministers. By maintaining a strong devotion to God we are setting an example of holding fast to the confession of our hope. We must frequently examine ourselves against God s Word to verify our hearts. It is as Warfield says, we should have our hearts on fire brightly so that in our innermost being we are men of God. The Causes and Effects of Gender Imbalance in Asia The Causes and Effects of Gender Imbalance in Asia By Tom Farrer Throughout this paper I will focus on the phenomenon of the gender imbalance in Asia. I will begin by assessing the current situation and researching the various causes which have led to it. I shall then analyse the possible consequences to follow and conclude with an outlook to the future. According to the United Nations the recommended sex ratio at birth (SRB) for a country is 107, meaning that for every 100 females born, 107 males are born . The average SRB for industrialised countries lies between 104 and 106 , therefore looking at the figures for many Asian countries, we can see that something is clearly wrong. With many countries where the SRB is well above average, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of his more well known inventions is the ultra sound machine used for foetus scanning. Coming into widespread use throughout Asia in the mid 1980s, this machine enabled families to find out the sex of their unborn child and is therefore held responsible, to a considerable extent, for the gender imbalance. In order to combat the obvious effects of the ultra sound machine, the Chinese government has since prohibited its use for non medical sex identification (see the second section of the table below ), as has the Indian government in the Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (1994). Nevertheless, despite the prohibition of non medical sex identification and abortion in China, the floating and rural population and corruption among medical practices has made enforcing these laws difficult. The situation is similar in India, where illegal sex identification has become a lucrative business, despite the three year jail sentence for those found out. As in China, this punishment is also very difficult to enforce and, especially in rural areas, is often ignored by local police altogether. Therefore, the Chinese government has introduced different initiatives to combat the gender imbalance, one of which is the Care For Girls Campaign. One of the art pieces that caught my eye was the Head of a Ruler, from ancient Iranian or Mesopotamian times. I chose this figure because the person depicted in the copper head looked like an important figure of the time. The man is well groomed and has an emotionless face, but it also looks like he is portraying a little confidence in his expressionless face. Considering this is a copper statue, I think it is safe to say it was not completed in a short amount of time, leaving me to wonder if the man posed for the figure. Whether he posed for it or not, it still gives off the vibe that he held a high title in society. There was no indication on the display of who the man was or what his role was, only assumptions that supported my ideas that the man was an important figure in that society, possibly a ruler or king. They were to confess to a crime they did not commit and these accusations were usually entirely false (Gulag: Soviet Prison Camps and Their Legacy page 26), as was the case of Riemann.
