When we were first assigned this paper, I was stumped. My interests span
throughout a broad variety of topics, and because of this, I did not really know
where to start. I have long been intrigued by the world of Japanese animation, and
recently, I happened upon a hard copy of my favorite film from when I was a child:
Howl s Moving Castle. All of the nostalgic memories I have of watching it when I
was a child flooded my mind, reminding me of how much I admire the artwork in
the movie. I began to brainstorm ideas related to this. In the end, I boiled it down to a
biography of Hayao Miyazaki (the director) and the strong themes in his movies.
Combining the two lead me to decide on addressing how his personal life influenced
the persuasive themes and symbols he conveys through his beautiful art.
My first step to approaching this challenge was to go to the library and research
sources that would be useful in completing this paper. After a few hours I had a
written list of dependable articles and websites that pertained to his movies.

Introduction Chordates are an animal phylum that is classified by four main

A problem in our world today involves the labels and generalizations that are used
to describe, often negatively, a large population of people or species. Some of the
more common ones that are present today include the idea that Muslims are terrorists,
Syrian refugees are dangerous and are looking to cause trouble here in the United
States, and so on and so forth. While these negatively impact our society in ways that
can cause unmistakable and unexplainable pain to these groups of people, it is ...

preconceived notions they are born with lead to their mistreatment and abuse.
Gladwell also touches on the idea of stable and unstable generalizations that not
only involve dogs, but also other groups of humans as well. For a while,
generalizations that D.E.A. agents made in attempting to identify and catch potential
terrorists and drug smugglers in airports were so flawed and based on unstable
assumptions (such as targeting all Arab and Pakistani passengers, as if they were the
only potential terrorists solely based on their ethnicity) that the D.E.A. almost always
profiled the wrong person, and missed out on capturing the true criminals. When the
act of generalizing... changes the basis of the generalization, it is necessary for those
patrolling to both adapt to these changes and to get rid of the generalizations they

Why did I choose George Etienne Cartier?
For my heritage fair I decided to research George Etienne Cartier, who if you haven
t heard about was a lawyer, rebel, politician and railway promoter whose
contributions to Confederation were on the same level as figures like John A.
Macdonald and George Brown(Sweeny). If you haven t heard of any of these
people, then don t worry I ll be going into length on all of them, but I ll make sure
to focus from the perspective of George Cartier. Furthermore, if you were
wondering why I chose this topic to research, I would truthfully tell you that the
only reason I chose George Etienne Cartier was because he was as good a topic as

George had 7 siblings and was the seventh child of his parents(Bonenfant), I didn t
research much about his siblings but I did find that one of George s brothers also
went into law and was a partner of Georges during the time he practiced
law(Bonenfant). As you can tell probably tell from the name, George Etienne Cartier
came from French background and lived in Lower Canada which was mainly French,
he came from a relatively wealthy family of grain exporters and millers(Sweeny).
Which possibly influenced his views towards Confederation after the repeal of the
Corn Laws, but that s a subject for later, when we understand more about George s
involvement with Confederation. Another thing that could have influenced George
about Confederation was that the fact that he was born around the same time as
the War of 1812, which again is a subject for later. As we know George came from
a wealthy family, which allowed him to live a relatively comfortable life, it also
allowed him to be able to access educational opportunities. He studied at the Sulpician
College of Montreal, afterwards he studied law and politics(Sweeny), he was also
able to learn more about law while working under Edouard Rodier, a Montreal
Lawyer who was involved with various rebel groups in Lower Canada(Bonenfant).
