Introduction Individuals belong in a lot of different groups and settings in their lives and their
ability to function well within these settings it is important for their wellbeing but also for the
growth of the organisation itself. As potential therapists who are going to work with people
within organisations it is important to understand the unconscious meanings behind individuals
behaviours and the mechanisms that individuals and organisations use to deal with their
anxieties. As humans and organisations use similar ways to defend themselves from similar
anxieties, in this Essay I will describe some of these ways. I will first talk about what anxiety is
from a psychoanalytic perspective and then I will talk about the defensive mechanism of
projection as it is a mechanism that occur in the ways that individuals deal with anxiety but is
also a mechanism that groups use to deal with their anxieties in the organisations. To make
projection clearer I will give an example from own personal life. I will continue by describing
defences that occur in social systems and I will do that by using the Bion s social defences

Slaughterhouse Five. I am particularly interested in the effects different perspectives have
throughout my extract, as well as the effects of the narrative structure and if it conforms or diverges
from the typical models of narrativestructure. I am also going to be analysing the characterisation
of different figures in my extract and the impressions these give on the characters. I will also be

In doing so, this suggests that even though he is of a higher rank than them they don t see him this
way and see no need to pay attention to him. Bob would be therefore losing his higher status and is
trying to regain it by delivering an influential speech.
During the dialogue between Wild Bob and Billy it is important to note the act of turn taking. As
Billy withholds participation, Bob is forced to speak again, meaning that turn taking is not
fulfilled here. This gives the impression that Billy is a weak character who isn t really aware of the
situation and appears to have little knowledge about the topic. Billy couldn t remember the outfit he
was from (Vonnegut 1969: 55).
As Bob speaks for longer, and has a lot more turns in the conversation than Billy it shows that he in
charge of the soldiers and his status is evident through this conversation. He also controls the topic
of the conversation. Again, this displays that despite his physical and mental health he is still a
strong, sure and higher status soldier than Billy and it is evident that Billy recognises this.
Next I will discuss the characterisation throughout my extract. Firstly I will consider how thought is
represented. The main representation of thought that the narrator uses is indirect though. This can

The verbal and nonverbal cues of Steele further support the idea that leadership is the foundation for
an ethical command climate. The individual is one of three essential elements in building an ethical
leader. In turn the type of leadership an individual brings to bear on an organization depends totally
upon the morals and character of that person. Leadership establishes the standard upon which a
commanding officer establishes the sort of organization he or she will lead. In assuming command
of the Rakkasans, it is imperative to assess the state of the command for deciding what changes
should be implemented. Following with Kotters eight steps for change, the Rakkasans must have an
environment for change to instill an ethical command climate. As a combat unit, the Rakkasans will
maintain a combat mentality yet employ an emphasis on acting ethically. In order to affect change,
it is necessary to assemble subordinate leaders to provide them with clear, succinct command
guidance detailing expectations of the leadership, junior and senior alike, up and down the chain of
command. Responsibility of a commander is infinite and must constantly evaluate the climate of
the command to ensure the urgency is present, the team is composed of the right personnel, and
communicating the right vision. As previously mentioned, in communicating the correct vision for
the Rakkasans guidance must outline the expectations leadership requires of unit personnel.
